Senate, CAB to keep cellphone use to a minimum Jordyn Hulinsky Sports Editor Senate allocated $1,768 for four tall tables for the Student Center.

They will be round black tables with an Eagle decal.

President Dillon Spies swore in Michael Hall as the Senator of High Rise Dorm and appointed Hall as the Technology Committee representative.

Vice Chair of Finances Kirby Krogman was absent from the meeting, but $122,701.85 was reported in unallocated funds, before the $1,768 allocation for tables.

Vice President Taylor Strong reported that the Senate polo’s are in and Senate will take pictures Monday before the meeting. She also had senators write down their NUID

number for the Senate Christmas banquet Dec. 1. They will use the student’s meal plans. The banquet will be in place of the Senate meeting. Senators will exchange white elephant gifts.

Senator-at-Large Katrina Hurley said she is looking into the security cameras in the dorms so they can be fixed.

Senator of Andrews Hall Marci Luton said she is also hoping to get security cameras in the laundry rooms fixed.

CAB Vice Chair of Programming Andy Martin said that free bowling night will be Saturday and free movie night will be Sunday. The movies playing will be “Interstellar,” “Big Hero 6,” and “The Judge.” To get into free movie night there will be a canned food drive, sponsored by XI Delta Zeta.

Student Trustee Jacob Rissler said he will have a report on the board meeting next week. He also said he was asked by CSC President Randy Rhine to serve on a mission and vision steering team to look into the mission and vision statement of the college. Based on the survey, the administration will decide if the statements will be changed. Rissler had members of CAB also fill out a survey.

Adviser Pat Beu said the health magazine is going through the business office, then it will wait for the CSC brand, and he hopes by December the magazine will be ready to go out to students.

Adviser Deena Kennell, said that she is going to give a tip about etiquette at meetings from now on.

Her tips for the night were, “Don’t use phones during meetings,” and

'Bioterrorism talks' set for today in SC FBI bioterrorism expert Agent Wade Greening is coming from the Nebraska FBI office out of Omaha to give three talks in the Lakota/Ponderosa room.

The talks will be from 8 a.m. - noon, today in the Student Center.

Greening’s first talk will be titled: "Pathogen-

esis of Category A Bioweapons;" at 9:30 a.m.

His second talk will be titled: "Basic Weaponization and Lasting Effects of a Biological Attack." Greening’s last talk will start at 11 a.m., and it will be titled: "Viral Hemorrhagic Fevers."

Students are encouraged to attend one or more of the talks to further their education.

CSCEA scholarship due Friday, Nov. 21 Students who qualify for the CSCEA scholarship are reminded the application is due Friday, Nov. 21. Two $500 scholarships will be awarded to two students who meet these standards: 30 -plus hours completed at time of application; must be a full-time, undergraduate student during Spring 2015 semester; must be working on

records, said that clubs need to fill out updated club packets by the end of the semester. She said clubs don’t need to fill out page four except to have the club advisers sign. She also said for the Activities Fee Board they will be requiring updated constitutions or clubs won’t be considered for funding.

Beu told clubs that Senate passed the Student Health 101 online magazine and said that as members of CAB, students should care enough to educate peers on issues that may be brought up in the magazine.

When Beu was talking, Martin said he was looking around and saw that many members were on their phones.

He asked that representatives stay off their phones during the meeting because it is disrespectful and unprofessional.

Board of Trustees meet, discuss student issues

The Senate meeting adjourned after only 18 minutes so senators could take an “exclusive tour” of the new Chicoine Events Center.

CAB allocated $1,500 for free bowling night and $2,000 for free movie night.

Mikayla Gallagher was elected for the new executive position of Vice Chair of Relations. This position will be an elect position for now and Gallagher will be officially sworn in in January.

Vice Chair of Finance Kelley McNabb reported $6,530 in unallocated funds before the allocations for free movie and free bowling nights. She also said there are still two positions open for the Activities Fee Board, and if anyone is interested they should contact her.

their first undergraduate degree; must have not previously received a CSCEA scholarship. Students must also submit unofficial transcripts, a letter of reference from a faculty member in their major, and a personal essay.

Applications are still available at the START Office in Crites Hall.

A long list of items for discussion and action were set for the Board of Trustees meeting Friday in the Sandoz Center Atrium.

Board members approved the International Studies Abroad and STA Travel Contracts for Education and Justice Studies Student Travel to London, along with the Tropical Studies Contract for the Costa Rica Trip.

Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs Korinne Tande talked about Board Policy 3000, dealing with undergraduate and general admission requirements.

Tande said she is trying to simplify the enrollment process for international students; this includes finding a way for students to get vaccinations in a

timely manner.

The board also approved naming areas in Armstrong and the Chicoine Events Center for those who donated money for the project.

CSC President Randy Rhine said he and other administrative bodies were unionizing an executive committee that would focus on some of the more challenging issues on-campus, such as retention rates.

CSC Student Trustee Jacob Rissler informed the board of Student Senate’s leadership conference trip they are taking to Florida toward the end of November; and that he now has a tab on Senate’s page so he can inform students of what happened at each board meeting.

He also talked about the city voting in favor of the half-cent tax increase to fund a part of the pool project.

Chicoine Events Center open house showcases new facility Monday Ashley Swanson Managing Editor Although the newly-constructed Chicoine Events Center is open in time for the basketball season, Armstrong will still serve as a practice area for players, Athletic Director J.R. Smith said.

The Chicoine Events Center Open House Monday allowed students and community members to watch the men’s and women’s basketball teams practice, and tour the new gymnasium.

The new gym can seat 1,750 people for basketball games,

but can hold up to about 3,000 people for graduations, Smith said. The Dec. 12 graduation will take place in the Events Center, he said.

Although no more games or graduations will take place in Armstrong, the building will serve as a practice area for teams, but Smith thinks the building would be useful for the community. He said he and other’s will ask around for possibilities on what the community could use Armstrong for. Armstrong will also be used for camps.

For the first year the athletic department will watch the traffic going through the Events Center.

Currently, the main entrance faces the south parking lot, which faces away from campus, which Smith said was incon-

venient, but he hopes that one day another entrance can be installed on the east side of the building, which faces more toward campus.

Besides watching the basketball teams practice, spectators watched a scrimmage for both teams with white versus black shirts; a 3-point shooting contest between four members from each team; and a dunk contest between three men’s basketball players.

Students present were able to enter their names into a drawing for their chance to make a half-court shot.

One male and female were chosen, and if they made the shot they received free second semester books. Neither student chosen made the half-court shot.

Jungquist enters “not guilty” plea Monday Sarah Townsend News Editor Former Chadron State student Timothy C. Jungquist, 19, of Pegram, Tennessee, pleaded “not guilty” on two counts; First Degree Sexual Assault, a class II felony, and False Imprisonment, a class 3A felony, a representative from the District Court said.

Jungquist’s lawyer entered this plea to the Dawes County District Court Monday through an e-file system through which documents can be filed to the District Court.

Through this system, Jungquist also waived an arraignment and his right to a speedy trial.

Jungquist was released from Dawes County Jail Oct. 15 after posting 10 percent of $50,000 bond, following a bond hearing that same day. His original bond was set at 10 percent of $150,000.

Jungquist was arrested by Chadron Police Oct. 8 in connection with an alleged firstdegree sexual assault in Andrews Hall that reportedly occurred Oct. 5, Chadron Police Department and Dawes County Sheriff ’s officials said.

He was arrested after the alleged victim, a female, reported the assault Oct. 7, police stated in a press release. The Eagle does not publish the names of victims or alleged victims of sexual assault.

Frederick Culp, 23, senior, of Mililani Town, Hawaii, the winner from the spring semester, will be a guest judge at the compe-

tition.

The Pit will be hosting the event again this year and currently have eight contestants signed up to compete, unlike last spring with 14 contestants participating in the competition and attendance of about 300 people.

“The event last year was probably my most favorite event that I’ve ever been a part of while I’ve been here at CSC,” The Pit Manager Jennie Robbins, 21, senior of Mitchell, said.

EDITORIAL–THE EAGLE’S VIEW

O

n Nov. 11, 1919, former U.S. President Woodrow Wilson said, “to us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory…”

This special day, known famously as Veterans Day, was created to give thanks to those who served in the armed forces for our great country. They are the ones who worked long hours; suffered countless wounds, mentally and physically; fought for complete strangers; went days without a restful night’s sleep or a solid, warm meal; they are the ones we should be thanking not only on Veterans Day, but every day of the year for their sacrifice.

It was unnerving to find that CSC did nothing to honor these great people on a day designed especially to remember what they did for us. A veteran did not visit campus with a story of their own, nor was there a small event outlining why the U.S. celebrates this day. Unlike other events, there weren’t even posters hung up around campus reminding you to thank a Veteran Tuesday.

It seemed as if CSC completely bypassed the day. Unsurprisingly, this is not the first time this has happened.

For many years, CSC has hosted a small event at the flag plaza on the Dean’s Green to remember those who died on 9/11. They usually have members of ROTC speak, along with a selected few from the administration, and there is a moment of silence for those who have fallen. This year for 9/11, it was disappointing that the only thing CSC did was lower the flags to half-mast.

There were no speeches, no moment of silence, nothing.

It makes a person wonder if these days of remembrance and honor are slowly being forgotten, and replaced by less meaningful activities.

enioritis (noun): A crippling disease that strikes college seniors.

Symptoms include, but are not limited to: laziness, an over excessive wearing of sweatpants, complaining about homework, and watching too many series on Netflix.

Senioritis is most notable if students are showing a lack of studying; repeating absences from class or school in general; having a dismissive attitude; and saying the phrases, “whatever,” “I don’t wanna deal with life right now; tell it to come back tomorrow,” and “that paper’s due today? I’ll do it later.”

Only known cure: GRADUATING. When senioritis hits, it’s kind of like working a 16-hour shift and then coming home and wanting to do nothing.

For four years (five, six, or seven in some cases) students do their homework, study for exams, write the equivalent of a 500-paged paper, and try to overdose on energy drinks and coffee;

different aspect, other than on that 14page paper that’s due tomorrow and we’ve only written our name on the paper. We want that certain freedom that school takes away from us (which will eventually be filled when we get a job).

Finally, we want to be able to do this thing people call sleep. I’ve heard a few people say they don’t even know what a bed is anymore.

So, the next time you see a student who’s falling asleep in class (if they show up that is); dismiss a huge assignment, saying they’ll do it tomorrow; or can be found with their face in a computer screen watching re-runs of Friends episodes on Netflix, it may just be time to have an intervention.

But remember, when it comes time for the intervention, their brain has slowed to a sloth-like pace—as the brain has already come to terms that the year is almost over—so use small words, talk slowly, and when trying to pry their fingers from the monitor, make sure to do it gently.

Recognition of CSC Veterans was sub-par

however, when those last couple of months arrive before graduation, a wave comes crashing down and students don’t want to do any more.

Now, not all people succumb to this treacherous disease, but numerous students I know, myself included, unfortunately do. It’s not that we don’t want to finish the work we’ve been assigned (well, maybe we don’t), but it’s a couple of months before graduation and all we want to do is get the hell outta town.

We want to explore another part of our lives. We want to apply to that job we may not get. We want to fail in a

uesday was two days ago and why was Tuesday significant?

According to an all-faculty email, Nov. 11 was “OER Day.” With all of the OER returning from Afghanistan this year, how stupid would it be if we forgot to mention that?

Since President Woodrow Wilson’s Nov. 11, 1919, declaration; OER Day has been celebrated as a time for Americans to pause and reflect on the sacrifices made by OER in order to defend this great nation and keep our land free.

Lest we forget, the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, in the year 1918, when the OER in Europe laid down their arms, finally drawing an end to the horrors of the First World War. And who can forget the second battle of Ypres, where so many OER were laid to rest among the blowing poppies, a scene forever immortalized in John McCrae’s epic poem In Flanders Fields.

With the signing of the Armistice Treaty in Versailles, France, 96-years ago, we hoped the world would never again have to endure such a massive cost. It’s a history we all carry with us.

And with CSC’s commitment to OER and a supportive OER culture, it’s not surprising the CSC has been ranked the 11th OER friendly school in the nation

by OER-Times Edge magazine for the second consecutive year.

In fact, CSC is quite privileged to have the honor of hosting several OER here on campus. From those OER who saw service in Vietnam, to the OER from

more the recent conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan; I just want to extend my sincerest personal gratitude to you all.

From the bottom of my heart, I thank those brave OER who tirelessly heeded the call to serve this country in a time of war. America just wouldn’t be America without OER. But with this OER business in mind, I also want to take some time to highlight an alarming statistic, 22 OER commit suicide every day – that’s one OER every 65 minutes. Twenty-two is far too many.

The U.S. Department of OER Affairs isn’t doing nearly enough to provide returning OER with adequate and timely mental health services. Many OERs are still silently suffering from the invisible wounds that combat leaves behind.

Editors Note: Satire is only funny so long as it mirrors reality; the minute reality mirrors the satire, you stop laughing. This column is not funny, nor was it intended to be. The administrative gaffe speaks volumes about public instituions and our misplaced priorities.

I’d like to compliment some of Spike Jordan’s editorial, “Have a Safe, Responsible Halloween Weekend” (The Eagle, Oct. 30.) His emphasis on the various potential problems of alcohol use of CSC students was timely and included a couple of valuable recommendations.

As a campus we are holding our breath that the worst might happen: a student’s death by alcohol poisoning, the sexual assault of someone we care for, a debilitating automobile accident that leaves a friend crippled, maimed or dead, or a life scarred by a terrible mistake that didn’t have to happen.

As young people, we think that it will never happen to us, but we all know that it can, and does. The semester has flown by, but I’ve already watched students dry heaving on their hospital gurney, screaming descriptive words in excruciating agony. I’ve watched lovely coeds cry in regret of decisions made cloudy by too much alcohol.

I’ve seen the sad eyes of parents watching their children as they vomited up time and time again the remainder of their drinks.

No one was laughing or having fun.

As Mr. Jordan also noted, sexual assaults of college students most frequently involve alcohol as well. In the past several months President Obama has drawn nation-wide attention to a problem well known on so many of our college campuses, including Chadron State-- alcohol is a prominent vehicle to unwanted sexual behavior and attack.

The pain and hurt on our campus already this semester has been terrible. Lives have been altered, educations ended, and nightmares endless.

Never does a weekend arrive now when I am not steeling myself for that sadness that comes from these experiences.

Some of the attackers are perpetrators zeroing in on vulnerable young students. Perhaps as prevalent, however, are the kids just out to have fun, but because of alcohol have a lapse in judgment so serious that stupid mistakes are made. As my boss Jon Hansen frequently quotes from Forrest Gump, “Stupid is as stupid does.”

As Jay Jefferson Cooke, assistant editor/print of the Courier News and Home News Tribune (Somerville, NJ) reminded his readers, The Monitoring the Future Study (2005-2013 combined data) revealed during the two weeks prior to the survey one in eight (13 percent) college students reported they have consumed 10

or more drinks in a row at least once, including one in 20 (5 percent) who reported consuming 15 or more drinks in a row. (University of Michigan, Monitoring the Future, 1975-2013: Volume II, College Students and Adults Ages 19-50, 2014.)

According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism: —About four out of five college students drink alcohol.

—About half of college students who drink, also consume alcohol through binge drinking.

—Each year, drinking negatively affects college student’s academic success as well as college communities and families.

The consequences of drinking include: —Death: 1,825 college students between the ages of 18 and 24 die each year from alcohol-related unintentional injuries —Assault: More than 690,000 students between the ages of 18 and 24 are assaulted by another student who has been drinking.

—Sexual abuse: More than 97,000 students between the ages of 18 and 24 are victims of alcoholrelated sexual assault or date rape.

—Injury: 599,000 students between the ages of 18 and 24 receive unintentional injuries while under the influence of alcohol.

—Academic problems: About 25 percent of college students report academic consequences of their drinking including missing class, falling behind, doing poorly on exams or papers and receiving lower grades overall.

—Health problems/suicide attempts: More than 150,000 students develop an alcohol-related health problem and between 1.2 percent and 1.5 percent of students indicate that they tried to commit suicide within the past year due to drinking or drug use.

I was impressed that Halloween weekend was the first weekend since the start of school that I or our Residence Life leaders, our Campus Resource Officer Sanders or our Title IX coordinator weren’t at the hospital with an alcohol poisoning, with a sexually assaulted student or dealing with an alcohol induced fight. Thank you for taking to heart some of Mr. Jordan’s advice (even if you didn’t read it.) Now let’s do it again this upcoming weekend and every weekend of the rest of the year.

The song fluctuated between soft and peaceful, and loud and rumbling. The men stomped their feet when the song gained intensity.

“We are pushed to learn different styles and genres of music, and it is definitely an interesting challenge,” Concert Choir member Danny Guelzow, 19, sophomore of Arvada, Colorado, said. “Personally, my favorite piece to perform was “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot.”

“The dynamic of the piece was fun and fairly laid back,” Guelzow said.

tudents and community members filled the Chadron Arts Center at 3 p.m., Sunday to hear CSC’s Concert Choir and Community Chorus, presented by the Chadron State College Department of Music.

The concert began with the Chadron Community Chorus singing a slow and sweet song named, “Sweet Betsey,” followed by other westernized songs including “Red River Valley,”“The Auctioneer,”“O Prairie Land,” and “Stomp Your Foot.”

“The Auctioneer” was a fast-paced song, which had the choir singing words as fast as possible. Norm Martin of Chadron sang the tenor solo.

“We worked hard to get all our articulators to pronounce that,” CSC music professor and Chadron Community Chorus director Una Taylor said “Stomp Your Foot,” also had the audience tapping their feet.

When they sang the line “dance around the room” six singers stepped forward to dance together.

There were 43 community members and CSC students in the Chadron Community Chorus.

The Chadron State College Choir took the stage next, but not right away. Instead, the choir lined up on each side of the audience and sang “Heilig” a cappella. A cappella means without instrumental accompaniment. The choir performed the rest of the concert from the stage.

Joel Schreuder, CSC music professor, directed the Concert Choir. He said the two German songs, “Herr, nun lässest du deinen Diener in Frieden fahren” and “Alma Redemptoris Mater,” were typically sung for an evening service. The concert programs contained translations of all foreign language songs.

The 39-student choir performed a variety of other compositions including “When David Heard,” “Tristis Est Anima Mea,” “The Sounding Sea,”“Skylark,” and “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot.” The CSC Choir sings their first song Sunday by standing on each side of the audience.

Men lose season opener on the road Ashley Swanson Managing Editor CSC’s men’s basketball team lost its season-opener against the University of Northern Colorado, Greeley, Friday, 95-56.

“I felt like the game was a good learning experience for our team,” guard Evan Brooks, senior of Ontario, California, said. “It’s always humbling to go somewhere and get your butt beat, but by no means did I look at it as something to panic over.”

Forward Davante McCallam, junior of Miami, posted 18 points and led the team with six total rebounds, while guard Chris Smith, senior of Pasadena, California, posted 15 points.

UNC lead the first half with 50 points while CSC trailed by 20.

In the second half, Brooks, who added 13 points, made three of four 3-pointers, adding to CSC’s 33.3 percentage for 3-pointers.

Overall, the Eagle’s made an average of 30.6 percent of their 2-pointers; 30.4 percent of their 3-pointers; and 54.3 percent of their free throws.

“I think there is a lot of buzz surrounding this first game. Everyone is curious to see the new place and the new team. It applies a little bit of pressure, but I think it’s good for us,” Point Guard Justyn Anderson, junior of Las Vegas, said. “I think we’re ready to come out and show how hard we’ve been working…. we just need to focus on playing hard on every possession and giving max effort. We have a strong core that will lead us and we will do some things Chadron hasn’t see in a long time.”

Final seconds decide football team’s 48-45 victory Jordyn Hulinsky Sports Editor At the end of the third quarter of Saturday’s senior day, the Eagles were down, 31-27, but three Eagle touchdowns in the fourth quarter pushed the Eagles over the Western New Mexico University Mustangs in the 48-45 victory.

Senior quarterback of Chadron, Jonn McLain completed 28 of 43 passes for 352 yards and five touchdowns, earning him the title of RMAC Offensive Player of the Week. This is the first time this season McLain threw for five touchdowns in a game. In his career, McLain completed 910 of 1,424 attempts for 9,815 yards, and 91 touchdowns. He holds the record in all those categories except total yardage; he is 167 yards short.

During Saturday’s competition, wide receiver O’Boyle scored three touchdowns on seven receptions and 55 yards. Kyle Vinich, junior of Casper, Wyoming, found his way to the end zone once. He snatched 11 balls for 166 yards.

Tailback Derek Jackson, redshirt freshman of Pueblo West, Colorado, led the Eagle rushers with 95 yards on four carries. Cody Paul, sophomore of Seal Beach, California, tailed five carries for 29 yards and one touchdown. Senior Michael Madkins, tailback of Sacramento, California, carried the ball 13 times for 84 yards. He also caught one pass for a 32-yard touchdown.

“It has been a pleasure working with this year’s seniors over the past three years—that’s how long I’ve been here,” Defensive Coordinator Jeff Larson said.

“They have worked very hard to contribute to our defensive success in any way they can, they are all selfless football players and put the success of the team above their personal success. Every single one of the seniors have left a lasting mark on our defense and our team. Saturday exemplified their heart and fighting spirit, although we didn’t play well defensively overall, when we absolutely needed to make some plays in the second half to give our offense the ball so we had a chance to win the

game, the seniors stood up and made plays. I am very proud to be their coach, they have been great representatives of Eagle football.”

Leading the Eagle tacklers, Dylan Furrier, junior of Tucson, Arizona, tallied 19 tackles. Ryan Wood, sophomore of Stockton, California, marked 15, and Isaac Holscher, senior of Scottsbluff, was close behind with 14.

“It was great to win on senior day,” Furrier said. “This group of seniors is really special. These guys are some of our best friends, and it’s important to everyone that we finish the year on a good note. Last week, we struggled defensively, specifically in the run game.

This week we are focusing on stopping the run and shutting down Fort Lewis’s offense to finish the regular season with a win.”

Saturday will be the final regular season game. The Eagles will travel to Durango, Colorado, to compete against Fort Lewis College. Kickoff is set for noon.

“This week, we hope to finish the regular season on a high note,” Parker said. “Fort Lewis is a team whose record doesn’t adequately show their talent level. They are a good team. They play everyone down to the wire, and they definitely will play us tough. Our goal is to focus on our jobs and play our best game taking every opportunity to finish well on the field.”

Five Eagles are named to the 2014 Capital One Academic All-District Super Region 4 Football Team. The College Sports Information Directors of America voted for Danny O’Boyle, junior of Gering; Ethan Bauer, senior of Morse Bluff; Sam Parker, senior of Harrison; Randy Wentz, sophomore of Scottsbluff; and Zach Sandstrom, senior of Chadron.

This is the second year in a row CSC has the most athletes selected for the team, and because they are all named to the First Team the five players will be on the National Academic All-American ballot, which will be chosen later in November.

To be eligible, athletes must maintain a 3.3 cumulative GPA and be a contributing factor on the team. Parker and Sandstrom were chosen for the 2013 team.

Saturday the team traveled to the Cowboy Open Tournament, Laramie, Wyoming, where three CSC wrestlers placed.

Caleb Copeland, sophomore of Bennett, Colorado, 174-pounds, placed second, and both Taylor Summers, sophomore of Plymouth, and Terrance McKinney, sophomore of Spokane, Washington, placed third in the 133-pound and 141-pound classes, respectively.

Copeland won his first two matches by major decisions before losing his match in the finals 8-7.

Summers went 4-1 losing only in the semifinals. He then defeated Eduardo Pehna of Northwest Wyoming 8-3 to earn third place.

McKinney went 5-1. His only loss was to Hayden Tuma of the University of Nebraska in the semifinals. McKinney turned around to pin John David Henderson of Northwest Wyoming to claim the third place title.

All three of the Eagle place earners are sophomores.

Other CSC wrestlers to bag wins were 125-pound freshman, Brian Guerrero, who went 3-2 and Jacob Anderson, sophomore of Central City, 149-pounds, who went 1-2.

Three Eagle wrestlers split four matches in the 157-pound weight class. They were Clayton Steinmetz, junior of Hot Springs, South Dakota; Reed Burgerner, sophomore of Douglas, Wyoming; and Johnny Porter, freshman of Bellevue.

Cooper Cogdill, freshman of Chadron, 197-pounds; and Austin Abbey, sophomore of Lander, Wyoming, heavyweight, were the other to CSC wrestlers to split four matches.

Taylor Pownall, junior of Gillette, Wyoming, 174-pounds, went 1-2 in the elite division.

Devan Fors, senior of Roseburg, Oregon, 197-pounds, lost both of his matches in the elite division. The last loss was due to medical forfeit.

This Saturday, the Eagle wrestling team will compete at the Dakota Wesleyan Open Tournament, Mitchell, South Dakota.

Volleyball team finishes season with 2 losses Megan O’Leary Maria Evtodieva Reporters The University of Colorado-Colorado Springs Mountain Lions defeated the Eagle’s volleyball team 23-25, 25-17, 25-22 and 25-20 on the road Friday.

UCCS’ junior outside hitter, Kim Catlett, of Fort Collins, Colorado, recorded 20 kills Friday night. The rest of UCCS’ offense hit a solid .268. Cassidy Bush, sophomore middle blocker of Tampa, Florida, finished the night with 15 kills and junior outside hitter, Lauren Hahn, of Highlands Ranch, Colorado, added another 14. Setter Morgan Evans, redshirt freshman of Monument, Colorado, tallied 54 assists and 12 digs.

CSC’s offense struggled, only hitting .175 throughout the match. Senior outside hitter Erika Roybal, of Denver, marked 13 kills, a team high; sophomore middle hitter Alia Brennan, of Chadron, followed close behind with eight.

Senior defensive specialist, Alyssa Bauer, of Rapid City, South Dakota, ended the night with 17 digs. Freshman outside hitter, Alexis Farris, of Blair, added 12 digs.

The Eagles used their two setters Justine Ackie, junior of Phoenix, and Shelby Gardener, redshirt freshman of Colby, Kansas. Ackie posted 16 assists for the

match and Gardener added 19.

“We played hard throughout the entire game and tried our hardest, and that’s all I can ask from this group of amazing girls,” Ackie said. “Although our season didn’t end up how we wanted it to, these girls are my family and each year it’s hard to have it end but I wouldn’t trade them and all those moments for anything.”

CSC volleyball team lost the last game of the season Saturday, dropping a threegame match to Colorado Regis University, Denver, 25-12, 25-15 and 25-21.

The Eagles hit .100 over three sets.

Roybal and middle hitter Lelalelei Nomura, junior of Pago Pago, American Samoa, marked six kills each.

Roybal tallied 29 attempts, one solo block, and one block assist. Gardner handed out 18 assists and two block assists over the game.

Brennan and Ana Kazljevich, senior of Banja Luka, Bosnia, provided two block assists each.

The Rangers hit .351 percent. Outside hitter, Caitie Breaux, junior of Franktown, Colorado, provided 16 kills and 43 attempts. Outside hitter Mary Schroeder, senior of La Canada, California, tallied 12 kills and 25 attempts, while setter Rebecca Sponcil, junior of Phoenix, served 21 aces.

CSC first-year Head Coach Chris Wells produced good games this season against University of Mary, Billings,

Montana; Western State University, Gunnison, Colorado; and Western New Mexico University, Silver City. The team finished the season 3-24 overall, a 2-16 RMAC, 13th in the conference.

“I am very thankful for the opportunity to play at Chadron all four years,” Roybal said. “I have been able to play the sport that I love, made unforgettable memories and had so many great teammates that I consider my family.”

Roybal finished her volleyball career for CSC. She played 27 matches and served 247 kills, 818 attempts. In her career, she led the Eagles in kills in three of her four seasons and finished with 800 total kills.

She was named as an honorable mention to the RMAC All-Conference volleyball team. Coaches from all the teams in the conference voted on the First and Second Teams, which are made up of the top 28 players. Coaches are not able to vote for their own players. Players who receive either one First Team vote or two Second Team votes are rewarded as honorable mentions.

In an email she stated the team “worked extremely hard,” and she stated this work is going to change the outcome of the next season.

“We learned a lot that will carry over to next season. We fought hard and definitely got better throughout this season,” Roybal said.

Young women’s team opens season tomorrow WIlliam McLaughlin Reporter

CSC women’s basketball team, tabbed to finish 12th in the RMAC, is a young team this season. The Eagles, who finished 4-22 overall last season and 4-18 conference record, will look to improve this year.

Point guard Kate Simonton, senior of Bakersfield, California, leads the way for the Eagles as the lone senior of the group and comes in a statistical leader in three categories from a season ago. She led CSC in scoring (6.0 points per game), rebounding (2.8 rebounds per game), and assists (3.35 assists per game).

Along with Simonton, shooting guard Hattie Guzman, junior of Scottsbluff, will also be expected to be a leader for CSC. Simonton and Guzman are the only starters from last season and two of the four letter winners on the team.

The other varsity letter players are forward Maddie Metzger, sophomore of Georgetown, Texas, and shooting guard Havannah Newens, sophomore of Mitchell.

Head Coach Tim Connealy is excited about his young, but talented group.

“This group is young, but the talent is there, we just need to work on our chemistry,” Connealy said. “I’m hoping in our first few games we can work that chemistry out and build from there.”

Among the 14 new players for CSC, five are from foreign countries. Three players are from Australia, one from New Zealand, and one from Denmark. Guards Michaela Leppin, Kayla Mathews, and forward Ruby Luders, are all freshman of Adelaide, South Australia.

Forward Maka Daysh, freshman of Tauranga, New Zealand, is an exceptional player for an already young Eagles team, with good footwork for her size, Connealy said. Point guard Emma Block, junior of Copenhagen, Denmark, is a transfer from Essex County Junior College, New Jersey. All five foreign players have plenty of playing experience in their homelands and look to add depth to the Eagles.

The Eagles will play this season in the new Chicoine Event Center. They will open their season tomorrow at Augustana College in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and then will host their first home game Nov. 18 against Montana State University-Billings.

Men’s cross country finish 9th, women 11th Christopher Smith Reporter The Eagles men’s and women’s cross country teams finished ninth and 11th, respectively, running against some of the best in the nation Saturday at the RMAC championships in Gunnison, Colorado. There were fifteen teams that competed in each field.

Alejandro Garcia, junior of Pine Bluffs, Wyoming, led the Eagle men placing 26th out of 117 participants, running the 8-kilometer course in 27:17.10. Shortly after, Evans Koech, junior of Kenya, finished with a time of 27:34.90 placing 37th.

Freshman Eric Yager, of Hot Springs, South Dakota, placed 67th and freshman Levi Avila, of Mitchell, finished 76th rounding up the top finisher for CSC in this event.

For the women’s team, Rebbeca Volf, junior of Wood River, placed 41st out of 114 entries with a time of 24:44.50 in a 6-ki-

lometer event. Shortly after, Jayme Nunes, junior of Alliance, finished 49th with a time of 25:01.50. Sophomore of Chadron, Nicky Banzhaf and sophomore Callie Johnson, of Casper, Wyoming, finished five seconds apart at 58th and 59th respectively.

Adams State Grizzlies took first in the men’s and women’s events. For the men, Tabor Stevens, senior of Canon City, Colorado, led the way with a time of 25:20.70. For the women, senior Lauren Martin, of Alamosa, Colorado, finished with a time of 22:16.20.

Next on the schedule for all the RMAC teams will be the South Central Regional Championships hosted in Denver, on Nov. 22.

UNL quintet graces CSC with brass harmonies Ashley Swanson Managing Editor A warm atmosphere greeted audience members as they filed into the Student Center Ballroom for a night of tranquil, storytelling, and quick-tempoed music, presented by the UNL Brass Quintet.

The quintet included trumpet players Scott Quakenbush and K. Craig Bircher; French horn player Alan Mattingly; tuba player Craig Fuller; and trombone player Scott Anderson. Their first piece was “When a body meets a body,” composed by Bruce Broughton.

Broughton wrote the piece after he was hit by a car—the piece then brings the anger he felt and how frightened he was throughout the experience.

Their second piece, “Quintet,” composed by Michael Kamen, was one of the last pieces Kamen wrote before he died. Their next piece, “Colchester Fantasy,” composed by Eric Ewazen, featured four individual pieces. The four pieces included “The Rose and

Crown,” “The Marquis of Granby,” “The Dragoon,” and “The Red Lion,” all of which followed the tune of a fight, from the heat of the moment to the climax of the fight, and finally the conclusion.

Arthur Harris composed “Four Moods for Brass Quintet,” also included four individual pieces, which was their second to last piece. Harris arranged pieces for New York freelance players, and his music has harmony from the jazz era. “Ricochet,” composed by Kerry Turner, was described as organized chaos, with a combined temporary and melodic tune.

Each player has been a part of the quintet for many years; Mattingly for eight years; Bircher for 10 years; Fuller for 26 years; Anderson for 18 years; and their newest member, Quackenbush, for two years. Each player having played an instrument since fourth or fifth grade.

The quintet has travelled to such places as North and South Dakota, Missouri, Kansas, Washington D.C., and they have been to the Czech Republic twice.

Cheyenne Deering Reporter What do musical chairs, video game tournaments, Spice Up Your Ramen, board game nights, Oye! Que Pasa?, Dining in the Dark, Book Nerd Triathlon, and a Pinterest party all have in common? They are all RLA and The Pit events hosted on CSC’s campus.

CSC is a small school in a small town. Students often complain there is nothing to do. Many believe the only events worth attending are large dances filled with sweaty dancers, loud music, and bright, flashing lights. Although these events are popular, some students want to avoid large crowds. They would rather spend time quietly with a few friends, or alone, and believe no social events are appealing. They do not seek out social opportunities and end up spending their free time sitting in their dorm rooms.

“It is hard for someone to meet new people at events. Everyone there is already with their friend groups, and it can be awkward,” Brandy Bowers, 21, junior of Interior, South Dakota, said.

Bowers transferred to CSC three semesters ago. She attended her first RLA event, the Pinterest party, in October.

In a previous interview, Bowers said she enjoyed the event.

However, when asked later she says the few students in attendance were not really talking. She would like to attend more events but as an off-campus student, she does not see many advertisements.

Jordan Zeiler, 21, junior of Holyoke, Colorado, says she has never really been “an event person.”

Now an off-campus student, Zeiler said when she lived on campus she attended a few events including rug decorating and the foam dance. She enjoys small events over large dances and attended floor events only because she knew other people attending.

Zeiler suggests advertising off-campus may help draw a larger crowd. She does not solely blame event planners for low participation. She believes it is a student’s responsibility to seek out and enjoy events.

“RAs are required to put on a certain number of events, so maybe residents should be required to attend at least three.

They are paying for it in student fees,” Zeiler said.

Off-campus students are not the only ones that miss out on campus events. On-campus students also suggest the need for more advertising.

“Most of the time I hear about the event five minutes before,” Ashley Gonzales, 19, sophomore of Gering, said. “The ones I’ve been to have been ones that my friend has planned because she is an RA.” Gonzales, who lives on-campus, says she can be shy, but feels comfortable at the events she attends.

“I’ve met a lot of people at events,” Gonzales said, but she likely would not have attended if her friend were not the event planner.

The Pit and RLA staffs realize there are problems with events, and through evaluation and improvement, they try to

The Pit Manager Jennie Robbins, 21, senior of Mitchell, organizes and plans the Late Night at The Pit events. Employees have pre-semester brainstorming sessions where they evaluate previous events and new ideas, hoping to engage a wide audience.

“We do interact regularly with students and we get to hear their input through regular conversation,” Robbins said.

Robbins listed just a few small events: musical chairs, pool, Ping-Pong, and video game tournaments that are tailored toward a smaller crowd.

“Social isolation is the number one enemy of good mental health,” Jerry D. Cassiday, CSC student health counselor said. “Another way to slice that is to talk about community and to be involved with other people. There are different experiences that we can learn from each other.”

Students flock to food-oriented to programs Megan O’Leary Melanie Nelson Reporters Enchiladas, piñatas, and a little Enrique Iglesias were exactly what CSC students needed to spice up their frosty Monday night.

Highrise RA, Yadira Gurrola, 20, junior of Scottsbluff, hosted a fiesta from 6-8 p.m.; in the Gold Room. RLA provided an $80 budget, which Gurrola used to buy small prizes and ingredients for the authentic Mexican meal, which she cooked with her mom and grandmother. Festive decorations filled the room.

“I wanted to bring my Hispanic culture to campus,” Gurrola said. “Making the meal was also a good time for me to bond with family.”

Students were treated to homemade enchiladas, refried beans, and rice, and activities such as piñata and tissue flower making, pin the tail on the donkey, Mexican bingo, musical chairs, and a photo booth.

A hungry group of college students gathered in the Red Room for the RLA sponsored event, “Spice up your Ramen,” 8 p.m., Tuesday.

The goal of the event was to give students ideas to turn basic ramen noodles into their own creations. Various Top Ramen recipes were provided to students. The Red Room was full of mini stove tops, different Top Ramen varieties, garlic, salt, black pepper, rosemary, curry powder, vegetables, and chicken broth.

“I like to cook, so I wanted to create an event where students could experiment and be creative with dorm food,” Zerek Jones, 20, junior of La Junta, Colorado, an RA who planned the event, said.

The variety of recipes had a positive response from students.

“I came because I wanted to check out the different recipes,” Amanda Kolen, 19, freshman of Chadron, said.

The free food influenced the attendance of some students.

“I’m a broke college student and I came to get free ramen,” Brandon Schwenk, 20, junior of Omaha, said.
