The women's basketball teams first home game will be at 6 p.m., tonight in the Armstrong Gymnasium.

A CSC student posted a $1,000 bail and was freed Friday from the Dawes County Jail, less than 24 hours after his arrest Thursday night on drug charges following a police search of two Kent Hall dormitory rooms, city and county authorities said.

Austin L. Waterman, 19, freshman of Greeley, Colo., posted 10 percent of a $10,000 bond, after Chadron Police arrested and charged him Thursday with possession of a controlled substance, testosterone, without a medical order, county and city authorities said. The charge is a class four felony, a Chadron Police press release states.

Waterman was a member of the college’s track and field team. Head Coach Ryan Baily said Wednesday, that Waterman is no longer associated with the team or the athletic department.

“His actions were completely out of our control,” Baily said. “His actions do not represent our athletic department or track team.”

During Thursday’s raid, Chadron Police also cited two other students, Aloysius M. Zelney, 19, freshman of Elbert, Colo., and Weston M. Salyards, 19, freshman of Huxton, Colo., for being under the influence of cannabis, a city police press release states. The charges against both are misdemeanors, the release states.

Waterman resided in room 111, Zelney and Salyards are roommates residing in room 109. All three students were ordered to appear in Dawes County Court on Dec. 4. see DRUG BUST, Page 2

Sherri Simons, director of housing and residence life, did not respond before press time Wednesday whether or not the three still resided in the dormitory. However, Salyards said Wednesday afternoon that he and Zelney remained dorm residents, but that Waterman left Tuesday and "does not live here anymore."

In addition to the dorm rooms, police also searched Zelney's and Waterman’s vehicles.

In their search of the rooms and vehicles, police confiscated four cell phones, a marijuana pipe, a drug concealment container, drug packaging material, a safe, less than one ounce of marijuana, numerous vials of suspected testosterone, and syringes, the press release states.

The release also states that police acted on a tip from Kacy L. Gardner, 18, of Sterling, Colo., whom police described as Waterman’s girlfriend. The release states that state police stopped Gardner for speeding on Highway 385 last Thursday, and arrested her on drug chargers after a search of her vehicle produced “less than an ounce of marijuana, hashish, varies prescription pills without a prescription, and heroin.”

In a police interview following her arrest, Gardner, who is not a CSC student, told police she came to Chadron frequently to smoke

marijuana with Waterman, Zelney, and Salyards, the release states. She told police that she sold marijuana to Zelney near the Kent Hall parking lot on Wednesday.

The release also states that prior to serving the warrants, police contacted Simons and informed her of their intent “to search room 109 for drugs.” The release also states that Simons has also been with CSC for 34 years and possesses “vast experience handling drug and alcohol violations” at the college. It also states she “has received training on the recognition and safe handling of illegal drugs.”

The release states that Simons conducted a “health and safety sweep” on Waterman’s room, No. 111, “in accordance with college policy.” That search produced “hypodermic syringes, vials labeled 'testosterone,' a white granular powder, a silver in color box style safe with a digital lock, and half of an unknown pill.”

Simons also questioned Waterman about the items in his room. She told police that Waterman claimed ownership to some of the items, but refused to open a safe in his room. The Eagle, began discussions by saying the terms of service described would not promote change. She said, “You can just keep putting in the same people over and over, and that can be unfair to the rest of the student body.”

Lane Swedberg, CAB chair, expressed mixed agreement and said, “If we put term limits, we can limit an asset, but we can also stop a problem.”

Rissler said the only reason he would caution a term limit would be the limitations put on representatives that are, or could be beneficial members. Spike Jordan, also not speaking on behalf of The Eagle, added to the discussion, saying, “Put a two-year time limit and then stagger the positions of

the individuals who could be serving, that way you have a body of people that are experienced enough but fresh blood coming in and learning the ropes as they’re going along.”

Josh Keating, senator for liberal arts, replied to this suggestion, saying that senate can avoid corruption by bringing in new people but still keeping experience among the group.

Taylor Strong, senator of Andrews, said “having no term limit is a good idea.” Jon Lordino, chief justice, supports a term limit.

Teri Robinson, senator-at-large, suggested the idea of having no freshman on the board, saying, “I think because they don’t have experience, they don’t know what is

going on, and I just think it would benefit the student body as a whole to not even let freshman apply for it since they have three years left.”

Swedberg supported this idea, but said they could be closing the door to a good asset. Strong suggested a termination factor.

Asia Carr, senator for Brooks Hall, said, “Maybe have no more than three freshmen.

It would keep control but keep the door open.” Rissler disagreed saying, “freshmen here are of higher caliber, so it would be safe to assume they would do well.”

After about 20 minutes of discussion about the senate Christmas banquet, senators decided to table discussion and make an allocation for it next week.

Veteran’s Day is the day to remember and recognize those who have served and are currently serving our country, and to offer gratitude for what those individuals have experienced.

Retired Lieutenant Colonel Jon Hansen, interim vice president for enrollment management and marketing, spoke during the Veteran’s Day ceremony in the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center Monday morning. He began by recognizing members in the audience who have served or are currently serving. Hansen then read two poems, one of a soldier’s poem, the second of a service man found sleeping on his floor where he lived alone,

Along with the Veteran’s Day ceremony Monday, the Professional SW435 Social Work class presented the Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder: Veteran’s Invisible Wounds conference, yesterday. A panel that consisted of Gary May, professor of social work at Southern Indiana, Dr. Nicholle Peralta, psychiatrist from the Cheyenne VA, Colonel Tom Brewer, Willem H. Fahrenbruck, and Dr. Sally Weyer, Black Hills VA clinical psychologist answered questions from the audience before lunch.

Hansen and Nebraska Senator Al Davis also spoke before breakout sessions and lunch. There were four breakout sessions individuals could sit in on where different speakers presented throughout the day. CSC President Randy Rhine and many other noted individuals also took turns speaking throughout the day during the conference.

Pay attention to your government

B

aby-boomers accuse our generation of being lazy, apathetic, and entitled narcissists. We could not agree more.

If you need proof of this claim, just look back to the fruitless uproar a few weeks ago.

The Student Senate allocated $16,000 of your money to fund a trip for themselves.

Your money, Millennials. YOUR MONEY. We reported it, and plenty of students voiced complaints. One student was even brave enough to write a letter to the editor.

But for all the rabble-rousing, no one from the student body has shown the initiative to actually confront the senate and hold them accountable.

Just like Occupy, Kony 2012, and other brands of “slacktivism” engaged in by Generation Y, this too was confined to the narrow spaces of a Facebook confessions page.

In the weeks following the allocation, senate has quietly entertained an audience of themselves.

They are no longer to blame.

We are all here to get a degree, go out into the “real world,” get a job, pay taxes, etc., but what is your tax money worth if it’s not being spent to benefit you directly? Your money is being spent to benefit your “leaders,” a self-entitled body that are only following the shining example of self-service set by the U.S. Congress.

True leaders are not supposed to serve themselves; they are elected to represent their people.

Our leaders ought to be servants to their followers, to their constituents, and to the student body at-large.

The student government is not a secret society, and they are not making the decisions to spend your money in private. They hold public meetings, and we report on these meetings so that you can read The Eagle and be informed.

But what are you supposed to do with this information? They need your feedback to effectively govern, so schedule time to contact your representative or better yet, attend the meeting in person.

Next week, at 5 p.m. in the Scottsbluff room of the Student Center, the senate will discuss the proposed by-laws that will determine how student activities, clubs, and campus organizations receive their yearly budgets from student activity fees.

Democracy only works if you participate, and these by-laws establish precedents for all future allocations from student activity fees. We urge you to attend the senate meeting and discuss this matter in an open forum, or if you are too busy, contact your student senator to find out more details.

Video game music is an art

A

s an avid video game fan, I think that people take video game soundtracks for granted.

As I am writing this column, I have my favorite media player open with about 100 or more video game related songs.

Whenever I tell people that I regularly listen to video game soundtracks, they usually look at me like I’m completely insane. To those people: nay I say, I’m not insane (trust me, I was tested).

I like to think that video game music is the equivalent to listening to a movie soundtrack.

Game tunes will stay with you for a long time, and for any game you play, you’ll find that you build some sort of lasting emotional connection to the soundtrack.

One of my favorite soundtracks is the score to an independent game called Fez. Written and composed by Rich Vreeland, better known by his online alias, “Disasterpeace,” the Fez soundtrack is an aural experience. If you aren’t familiar with Disasterpeace, you should probably put down this paper and take a listen.

The Fez soundtrack resonates with me in a way that I thought was never possible. It’s like if progressive rock was written for the Nintendo Entertainment System. It’s simply amazing!

What really gets me about the Fez

soundtrack is that it’s one of the rare instances I’ve found where I felt at home after the first listen. I can almost guarantee you have had similar feelings toward video game soundtracks, whether you are aware of it or not.

If you doubt me, think about it yourself. Have you ever caught yourself whistling the theme song to Super Mario Brothers? What about The Legend of Zelda theme? Of course you have, and you’ve probably done it more than once.

That said, I understand that there are people who still think that video game scores aren’t real music, but don’t sell them short just yet.

There are entire professional orchestras dedicated to playing video game music, such as the C64 Orchestra, which is dedicated to playing music from Commodore 64 games in live concerts.

Another example of orchestral arrangements of video game scores is The Distant Worlds concert series, which passed through Omaha last March.

For those who aren’t aware, Distant Worlds is dedicated to playing music from the Final Fantasy series, headed

by Nobuo Uematsu (a.k.a. the creator of every single good song in the history of Final Fantasy ever).

If you can acquire the time and means, I highly suggest that you take time and go see them perform live. It’s an opportunity

Video game soundtracks have inspired me personally, I have been experimenting with making my own video game music for almost four years now, and I can’t begin to stress how difficult it is to get everything just right to fit a certain situation. But can you imagine playing without music? Would the journey still feel as epic? I think not.

Video game composers devote a lot of time and energy to their arts, despite video game soundtracks being highly underrated. Thankfully, their work is not in vain.

As long as there are video games soundtracks, there will be fans that truly appreciate them.

KNOW YOUR SENATOR

Jacob Rissler Senate President 20, junior of Gilette, Wyo. jacob.rissler@eagles.csc.edu Greetings CSC Students, I wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving. Your Senate this year has been working hard on many issues; from gun storage to the development of the new Activity Fee Board we have been diligently working for you.

One of the items we are working on this year is the new Activity Fee Board by-laws, they are part of the constitutional consolidation that Senate has been working on for two years. The Campus Activities Board and the Activity Fee Board will now find their operat-

ing procedures in the Student Association By-Laws. This was implemented to make it easier for Senate to change the operating procedures for the two permanent subcommittees, if necessary.

You can find these documents in the resources tab of our Sakai page which is accessible to all students, just search ‘Student Association’ in public courses and projects at csc.rsmart.com. (You can find approved minutes and agendas here as well.)

The Activity Fee Board by-laws have been accepted for review in Senate and are currently in the approval process. At the November 11th meeting we had to table discussion due to the loss of a quorum; however, we will continue working on the bylaws at the November 18th meeting.

In addition, we have been working on our Senate marketing and branding.

At the beginning of this year we started a Facebook page, feel free to give us a ‘Like’ (Chadron State College Student Senate) to find more information on our current projects, and view pictures of your representatives. We also have implemented ‘Senate in a Minute’, a short, less than a minute video re-capping the events of each Monday’s Senate meeting. You can find all of these videos on our YouTube page (Chadron State College Student Senate.)

In September Senate invited Campus

Activities Board members to join us in a leadership development trip to the ropes course in Scottsbluff. The trip was a huge success, generating more cohesiveness between Senate and CAB. In October we enjoyed the opportunity to attending the State Colleges Conference in Peru, Nebraska. This trip allowed us to meet with the Peru State College Student Senate leadership and gave us the opportunity to discuss issues affecting students with our sister college. Lastly, the Senate Executive board is attending the National Center for Student Leadership conference November 20th-24th to enhance your study body leadership. I believe that in every great leader there is always room for improvement, we look forward to bringing some national trends back to our campus.

Finally, always remember that our meetings are Mondays at 5:00 pm in the Scottsbluff room of the student center.

They are always open to the public. I would encourage you to find out who your Senate representatives are. LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Dear editor: How depressing is it that when the student senate or the college administration announces a change in policy or that a certain activity will be carried out, it gets railroaded unopposed? What does it say about our community when you can ask nearly anyone on the street, student or not, and they will voice strong opposition to the political goings-on of this institution, but that these activities we oppose still keep happening right before our eyes?

What does it say about how useful each of us is to society, when The Eagle needs to publish an editorial telling readers to actually BE the change they are looking for within student government? Is the Gen Y ‘slactivism’ mentioned in last week’s editorial that strong among us? Are we so jaded by national-level politics that we assume we can’t change anything on the local level?

We are all adults here. The fact that our school newspaper needs to tell us how to conduct politics appears to be a sign for me: we all need to grow up. We have democracy drummed into us from the earliest parts of our education. If we make it through high school and still don’t know how to voice an opinion through the proper channels, how to run for positions in senate to create the change we and our fellow students are

looking for, what will it be like when our generation is the voting majority in national politics?

Chadron has a population of less than ten thousand.

The CSC student body is a third of that. This is not the arena of hundreds of millions that makes up a presidential election.

One person absolutely can make an impression on a significant percentage of the people in this community. I admit, I’m probably doing my part in the aforementioned slactivism by shouting angry words at my computer screen instead of at student senate meetings. Let me try to redeem myself...

If you are reading this letter and you are angry about something (or everything) the student senate has done, don’t just say nasty things and move on. Find someone who agrees with you. Track down a senator and let them know that you’re pissed off and let them know why. Go to the meetings and voice your objections to policy changes you disagree with.

They have no problem ignoring what you think if you only moan to your friends, who moan to their friends. They can’t ignore it if a dozen students show up one day and actually voice opposition.

What is wrong with this country is not pigheaded politicians. It is apathetic voters. We are what is wrong. Let’s change that together.

Leadership should be based in selfless service.

H

unter S. Thompson once said that politics will turn you into a cynical misanthrope. The farther I get in life, the more I find myself having to agree with him.

I served on Student Senate last year, and while the majority of this year’s senators assumed their offices by petitioning the senate itself, I did it the old fashioned way. I sought election. I petitioned to be on the ballot as a senator at large at the end of my freshman year, Spring 2012.

I collected signatures from friends: communication arts majors, ROTC cadets, and my fellow Veterans. Those were students that I thought I could best represent, but I made sure that they were not my exclusive constituents. Once I collected the signatures, I turned my petition in to the chief justice, and I was placed on the ballot.

The election came, and The Eagle reported on April 26, 2012, that only 179 students voted. Twenty-two of those ballots were filled out incorrectly and were cast out. It was apparent to me that I was elected by a handful of students who had more-than likely stumbled into the voting booth and checked my name on accident. But hey, at least I was elected.

Once I was sworn into office, I volunteered to sit on the academic review committee, an assembly of faculty, students, and administrators that approve and deny the courses that CSC offers.

Because I was only a sophomore, my eligibility to sit on that committee was called into question, but I referred to my credentials as a Veteran, and my appointment was approved. I felt by volunteering my insight, I could make things better for students.

I admit that I wasn’t very knowledgeable about education or the accreditation process, but I found my niche on the committee. I flagged policies that I saw as potentially detrimental to students, and when I saw things that hindered the ability of students to access education, I felt the obligation to let people know about it.

A prime example was a mistake the committee made when it approved the requirements for FYI courses. If you failed an FYI course, the policy was that you couldn’t take another FYI course to replace that failing grade.

had said that was the student’s fault, and that that was not their problem. I strongly disagreed.

Since most FYI courses are six credit hours, if you failed, you would then have a six-credit hour F on your record. That F would hurt your eligibility for financial aid, and since the courses were on a two-year rotation and are required for freshman, you would be left out in the cold until your junior year before you could re-take that course.

I felt that policy was inherently unfair and that it would be potentially devastating to struggling students. The following week, I voiced my concern to the senate body and heated discussion ensued. The next week when I reported back to the committee, they heard the student concerns, and agreed to change the policy. That’s no longer news, but it’s a back-story to give credence to what I’m about to say.

My motives have never been intentionally belligerent or self-aggrandizing. I saw it necessary for me to be a servant because I was accountable to the people I served. After all, where would a college be without students?

The GI Bill paid my rent, and I earned the luxury of not having to find a full-time job. Rather than resting on that luxury, I felt obligated to devote my time and talents to my fellow students. I received no compensation and I reaped no material benefits, but I still felt satisfaction in knowing that I made a difference.

You can only learn service through being a servant.

Leadership conferences will never teach you that virtue; being a servant is often a –Spike thankless job, and despite the sense of accomplishment that I gained from my time on senate, I have a military-bred tendency to take service too far.

By March, my grades were slipping, I was stressed out, and I had to cut back on my obligations. I resigned from the Senate after spring break and focused on my education. I thought

Spike Jordan Managing Editor once I resigned, I could turn my back on politics and finally return to being a normal college student. I was wrong.

When Aaron Prestwich dissolved the Senate Finance Committee last year, I was working as the opinion editor for The Eagle. I found myself thrust back into the fray, and I couldn’t simply ignore politics. It’s the mafia cliché, “Just when I thought I was out, they keep pulling me back in.”

I now attend senate meetings on a fairly regular basis, so that I can observe and be informed. From what I’ve seen, the new crop of senators has volunteered because they were asked to be involved in student government.

However, the act of that involvement alone does not entail the act of service.

From the last few meetings, I’ve heard senators from dorms and academic schools give “no reports.” I’ve heard senators express more interest in banquets and professional attire than actually doing work. And the most ironic statement of all: I have heard the president and vicepresident relay inaccurate information that they learned at a leadership conference.

Those who seek public Jordan office should have the desire to be a servant to his or her constituents. True servants demonstrate their leadership through service and refrain from helping themselves to the perks of their position.

If you think your service puts you above those you serve, you are wrong, and anyone advising you otherwise has clearly given you bad advice.

ere’s irony for you: I’ve got a confession.

I worry, a lot. I worry about practical things like upcoming papers, finding time to practice, and making deadlines. I worry about philosophical things, like my friends leaving me behind, what I will do with my life when I leave this place, and being wanted.

I’ve been told by many that I worry too much, and this is probably true. I often let myself get carried away. I’ve always been this way, though. According to my parents, I was worried about the threat of militarized invasions of the United States at the ripe old age of five.

It’s a wonder I don’t have ulcers.

After spending four years of middle school and two of high school being the scary-looking “Gothic” kid (a label handed to me by others), I decided to try something different.

I had originally adopted an angry exterior to protect myself from the ridicule and judgment of a sports-oriented school system. I didn’t discover until my junior year that people might actually like me for me; hence the incredibly handsome, quickwitted loudmouth persona you all have the good fortune of seeing today.

I’m not fishing for sympathy, mind you. Everyone had it rough in their adolescence, that comes with the territory. If there’s one thing that I’ve learned during my maturation, though, it’s something that Jeff Morgan put best in his written adieu to CSC: “Do what you love.”

If I could put my own spin on Morgan’s claim, I would say, simply, do what makes you happy. A great deal of my stress comes from over-thinking. Another good portion of it comes from constantly worrying about everyone else’s happiness. I’m the kind of guy, believe it or not, that wants everyone to get along and everyone to live their dreams.

Unfortunately, reality often comes along to jack this ideal right in the jaw. If you spend all your time worrying about everyone but yourself, I guarantee you, you will not be any happier for it. Sure, everyone around you might be, but at the expense of your own emotional and mental health? Screw that.

Believe it or not, there is a time to be self-centered. Don’t let anyone else make decisions for you, because it’s a tough habit to break out of.

Don’t let your image depend on other people, because if those people leave you, you will be left with nothing. If your definition of a happy life is living at home and pursuing creativity while working a tolerable job at a gas station or Walmart, do that.

If your definition of happiness is climbing the ladder of a career, do that. People are quick to tell you to want more, to not be satisfied with what you do, but isn’t the entire point of living to find something that makes us happy? Satisfaction does not equal settling for less.

A lot of people walk around believing that everyone else has everything figured out. Always take solace in the fact that none of us have any clue what we’re doing. If you enjoy what you do, however, I would say that you’re on the right track.

International Education Week kicked off Monday with a wide variety of cultural performances.

The International Club put on a three-day array of events, which were open to all students and the public.

Day one hosted the cultural performances which featured dancing, instrumental pieces, traditional Japanese tea pouring, and calligraphy lessons.

Analise Garland, 19, freshman of Wall, S.D., performed the tea pouring. Dressed in traditional Japanese dress wear, delicately moving through the stages, she made tea for two students.

Nitsuh Edea, 18, freshman of Ethiopia; Mercy Gagnon, 21, senior of Togo, Africa; and Anna Dembele, 19, freshman of Bamako, Mali, performed several dance pieces, one of which was a traditional belly dance routine.

Tuesday evening brought presentations from Vietnam, China, and Japan, with each speaker focusing on different parts of the country.

Uyen Han, 18, freshman of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, began the night with a PowerPoint on Vietnam. She spoke on the school system, which is much different from those in the U.S. For instance, in order to get into college, students must take a college entrance exam. Although that doesn’t seem too different from some places in the U.S., if the student taking the exam doesn’t pass it, they cannot go to college and must wait an entire year to take the exam again.

Although in college some students start their day at 7 a.m., classes in Han’s city start at 6:40 a.m. and go until 5:40 p.m.

After regular classes end, Han takes extra classes to fill her time, which usually don’t end until 9 p.m.

lture Being accepted into a college is a big thing because of all the pressure students receive from their families. If the students do not get into a college or university they are compared to others and looked down on.

Garland presented Japan and focused on the shopping areas, temples, and towers. A major shopping street Garland started on is Harajuku, which is a very diverse area to visit, because of both the stores and the people who covered the streets. Although Harajuku sits on Takeshitadori Street, the street is actually un-drivable because of the thousands of people who fill the sidewalks and streets.

The next place she described was Shibuya, which is a mall more than four stories tall.

Garland also spoke about numerous temples, which included the Meji Jingo, which sits between Shibuya and Harajuku. Garland said the temple is a spot for many travellers, and takes about an hour to go completely around without stopping to take photos.

Zojo-ji Temple has a children cemetery in it where people come and offer prayers for the children.

Switching to towers, she first talked about Tokyo Tower, which is taller than the Eiffel Tower, and is used for broadcasting.

The Tokyo Skytree, which opened on May 22, 2012, and was built in a place where tradition and future meets, is also a broadcasting tower.

Doris Liang, junior of Baoji, China, introduced Chinese Opera.

In Chinese Opera, female’s make-up is very delicate and elegant. Their outfits are vibrant with bright colors.

Beijing Opera is a popular type, where women wear lots of jewelry and large gaudy hats.

Male’s facial make-up often stands for something specific. For example, Liang said white stands for the “villain” of the show, while red stands for loyalty.

The men also wear long, fake beards and large boots that are often hidden under their costumes.

The final opera she discussed was Si Chuan Opera. In this opera, the performers use masks, which they switch during their routine, reducing the usual heavy make-up performers use.

Eagles prepare for final regular season game Jordyn Hulinsky Sports Editor The Eagle’s football team will finish its regular season game this Saturday at noon in Golden, Colo., against Colorado School of Mines.

Chadron is ranked eighth in the Super Region Four rankings following their 34-10 win against Fort Lewis, Durango, Colo. The top six teams in the Super Region Four rankings move on to playoffs.

Chadron’s record is now 8-2 overall and 7-1 in conference. They remain ranked second in the RMAC standings, behind Colorado State-Pueblo.

Third on the list is Colorado Mines. CSM’s overall record is 7-3 and 6-2 conference.

After this weekend, the teams will know if they made it to playoffs or not.

Tailback, Glen Clinton, senior of Cody, Wyo., talked about the plan for this weekend’s game and the upcoming playoffs.

“Our goal is to win. In order to make playoffs, we have to win,” he said.

“All of the other factors are, unfortunately, out of our control, so that means that we have to just go out and beat Mines. We have been and will continue to approach every game like a playoff game.”

Clinton rushed for 61 yards Saturday. He’s posted 1424 yards on the season. This is his third season reaching over 1000 yards in a season. He’s also caught 100 passes for 889 yards in his career.

Quarterback, Jonn McLain, junior of Chadron, agreed with fellow team captain Clinton.

“My goal for this game is to win. Simple as that,” he said. “I hope we play as well as we possibly can and end up on top. We just need to win Saturday, and then see what happens. Everything else is out of our hands.” see FOOTBALL , Page 11

STACY GIRARD Sport: Cross Country Class rank: Senior Hometown: Alliance Finishing 14 among 152 competitors, Girard was six seconds away from making it to nationals in cross country at the NCAA South Central Region Championships, Saturday, in Canyon, Texas. Girard posted a time of 21:59. She was also named an All-Region honoree

by United States Track and Field and Cross Country Association.

This is the first time a runner in CSC’s cross country history earned all-region honors.

Volleyball team will close out season in Denver this weekend Janelle Kesterson Reporter This weekend the Eagle volleyball team travels to Denver to round out their season with two RMAC matches. Friday night’s game matches the Eagles against the Regis University Rangers.

Saturday, the Metropolitan State University Roadrunners take on CSC. The Rangers are currently 15-11 overall and 11-6 in the RMAC, while the Roadrunners are 15-10 and 11-6 in the RMAC. On Friday, the Eagles traveled to Colorado Springs to compete against the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs Mountain Lions. The Eagles defeated the Mountain Lions in five

FOOTBALL McLain received the honor of being named the Nebraska Division II Offensive Player of the Week following the win against Fort Lewis. McLain threw 20 completions for 292 yards, including two TDs, Saturday. He also ran in a 30-yard touchdown.

Middle hitter, Jessica Jester, senior of Cheyenne, Wyo., tallied 14 kills and five blocks. She’s posted 208 kills this season and she’s put a hand in 76 blocks.

As a whole, the Eagles marked up 63 kills and hit with an overall percentage of .217.

In the first set of the match the Eagles won with a lead of five points, and lost the second match to the Mountain Lions 25-23. The Eagles rallied and came back to win the third set. The Mountain Lions took the fourth match, 25-21. Inside linebacker, Shea Koch, senior of Custer, S.D., posted nine tackles Saturday, making his season total 113. Koch also spoke about the game against CSM and the playoffs.

“Well, my goal is to end the season with a W,” he said. “We all know that some things are out of our control as far as playoffs, but we can control our play and getting a win against Mines is what we aim to do!”

Wrestling starts season off with 18-17 loss to Bears Janelle Kesterson Reporter Tomorrow the Chadron State Eagle wrestling team will compete in the Augustana Duals in Sioux Falls, S.D. First, the Eagles will dual Air Force Academy Falcons, Colorado Springs. The second duel for the Eagles will be against Augustana College Vikings, Sioux Falls, S.D. The Eagles final duel this weekend will be against Morningside College Mustangs, Sioux City, Iowa.

This past week the Eagles wrestled against the University of Northern Colorado, Greeley.

The Bears won the dual 18-17 over the Eagles.

The Eagles lost the first match in a decision.

Dustin Stodola, senior of Clarkson City, won his match in a major decision, and put the Eagles in the lead.

The Eagles held onto that lead, only losing one match out of the next six. The Eagles lost their grip on the lead when the Bears won the last three matches of the dual.

Second-year head coach Brett Hunter said he was impressed with his team’s performance.

“I’m happy with how hard we competed,” Hunter said. “We really controlled the pace and I’m proud of them.”

The Eagles also competed in the Northwest College Open Wrestling Tournament in Powell, Wyo. The Eagle wrestlers competed against the University of Wyoming, Laramie, and Montana State University, Bozeman. They also faced the University of Great Falls, Great Falls, Mont.; North Idaho College, Coeur d’Alene; University of Montana-Western, Dillon; the Air Force Academy Prep, Colorado Springs; and the host Northwest College Trappers.

Taylor Summers, freshman of Plymouth, 125-pound, lost his first match to the champion to-be, but came back to win his next four matches and finish third in his weight class.

Jacob Anderson, freshman of Central City, 149-pound, went 4-2 in the tournament. Anderson won all his matches by decisions.

Dustin Stodola, senior of Clarkson, 133-pound, won all four of his matches, and won his weight class. Stodola pinned Clinton Garvin of University of Great Falls in 4:09.

Saturday, the CSC Men and Women’s Cross Country teams competed in the NCAA South Central Region Championships in Canyon, Texas.

The men snagged 18 out of 21 with a total time of 169.43 minutes with an average of 33:57 minutes.

Evan Koechs, sophomore of Nairobi, Kenya, crossed first for the CSC men.

The women came out with 11 out of 22 with a total time of 115:36 minutes with an average of 23:08 minutes.

Stacy Girard, senior of Alliance, lead the CSC women.

According to Brian Medigovich, assistant coach, Girard came in 14 out of 152 competitors and finished only six seconds away from going to the NCAA D-II National Championship held Saturday, Nov. 23 in Spokane, Wash.

“This year was kind of a rare year. Every other year the top 20 go (on to nationals),” he

said. “There was only 16 seconds between (sixth place) and us (11th place) for the women.”

The results were as predicted though, Medigovich said. He said he was satisfied although the teams did not qualify for nationals. He said going to nationals would help set up a tradition and he did not know how many second-year programs even get to consider nationals.

Girard was recognized as an All-Region honoree by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association following regionals. In order to earn all-region, a runner must individually finish in the top 25.

Woman’s basketball loses 59-38 against Missouri Western Mouhamed Diop Reporter CSC women’s basketball team lost their season opener 59-38 Saturday against the Missouri Western State University Griffons of St. Joseph.

Missouri Western took the lead at the beginning with a 10-0 advantage at the 13-minute mark. The Eagles’ cold shooting stood out during the game, but they only gave up 59 points to the opponent.

The Eagles made three of 25 field goal attempts, and they only made 20 percent of their free throws in the first half. The Eagles performed better the second half, but they still shot under 50 percent from the floor. They only connected on nine of 14 from the free throw line in the second half.

“We played a very good defense this weekend, but we need to work on our offense,” Dallas Shaw, junior guard of Buffalo, Wyo., said. “We are fine-tuning it this week, and we are hoping to come out on both sides of the court this week (against Wayne State College and Montana State University Billing).”

Kayli Rageth, senior transfer of Kimball, led the Eagles in scoring and rebounding with 16 points and 10 rebounds, and she shot seven of 11 for free throws. This is the second straight

weekend that Rageth led the way in scoring.

No other Eagle scored more than five points against the Griffons.

Tiara Hall, a 6-foot-1 transfer, led Missouri Western with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Two other Griffons, Quensiha Lockett and Ariana Novak scored eight points. Thirteen players scored for Missouri Western in this contest.

The Griffons were 10-32 from the field in the first half. The Griffons shot 23 of 57 from the field for 40.4 percent in the game. Missouri Western out-rebounded the Eagles 48-38.

The Griffons dominated in the paint, scoring 40 points inside the key and 18 other second chance points on 17 offensive rebounds.

The Eagles tallied 18 turnovers against Missouri Western.

The Eagles will play their first home game at 6 p.m. today against Wayne State College, and will travel to play Montana State University Billings, at 7 p.m. Saturday.

The Wayne State women are 1-0 after winning 105-41 against Peru State.

The Yellowjackets of Montana State are 1-2 this season having won 77-73 against California State University East Bay, Anaheim, Calif., and losing 77-71 against Pittsburg State University, Anaheim, Calif., and 87-45 to the University of Indianapolis, Anaheim, Calif.

Men’s basketball starts season off with 89-76 win Ashley Swanson News Editor The men’s basketball team kicked off the season with an 89-76 win against Dickinson State University, Dickinson, N.D. Racking up points on the scoreboard, guard, Grand Stone, senior of Canton, Mich., led the team in scoring 20 points, including five 3-pointers. Alongside him, guard, Evan Brooks, junior of Ontario, Calif., shot three 3-pointers.

Forward, Zac Bargen, senior of Chadron scored 15 points, while guard, Christopher Smith, junior of Pasadena, Calif., added 14 points.

Forward, Kendrick Holliman, junior of Spanish Fort, Ala., and guard, Chris Taylor, senior of Amman, Jordan, each contributed six points.

Taylor posted 12 rebounds, eight defensive.

“The team played how I expected,” Stone said. “We played together as a team and everyone was unselfish and happy for each other.”

In full, Eagle players made 53.6 percent of their shots during the game.

“I feel that we played pretty good but we still have a long ways to go if we want to accomplish our goals this season,” Stone said.

The Eagles will square off against Grace University in Omaha, at 7 p.m. CST, tonight. The Royals are 1-5 this season. They have won against Trinity Bible College, Ellendale, N.D., 82-58. They have been handed losses from Ottawa University, Ottawa, Kan., 74-67; Hillsdale Free Will Baptist College, Moore, Okla., 81-80; Dordt College, Sioux Center, Iowa, 122-89; Presentation College, Aberdeen, S.D., 85-80; and Concordia University, Seward, 87-72.

Audience treated to hilarious and heartfelt concert Una Taylor, associate professor of music, conducts Arioso in “El Vito,” Sunday afternoon at the Chadron Arts Center.

Last Sunday, CSC’s Men’s Ensemble and Arioso, the women’s ensemble, named after an Italian opera term, performed at the Chadron Arts Center, and they brought a few surprises. Specifically, the two conductors Joel Schreuder and Una Taylor included African drums, dancing, Raga, and underwear in the evening’s performance.

Show patrons anticipated beautiful, solemn pieces, with centuries-old pomp to match the Arts Center’s stainedglass sanctuary. The two ensembles satisfied this expectation with graceful tones, and they performed their wistful songs with trademark elegance. For instance, the Men’s Ensemble started their set with “Innisfree,” composed by Bradley Ellingboe and based on W.B. Yeats’ famous poem.

Featuring a solo by Scott Reffert, baccalaureate of Omaha, the song flowed through harmonies smoother than the waters of that idyllic isle, Innisfree.

The ensemble followed this with a Barnum composition, also based on a famous poem, this time by Robert Burns.

But after these two refined pieces, the shenanigans began, with Kimberly Murphy manning the piano. The Men’s Ensemble sang “Pirate Song” by Tim Y. Jones, which included such lines as “my pirate isn’t snooty, my pirate shakes his booty.”

The men sang their ridiculous nautical lyrics so seriously; they left the audience in a sea of laughter. Of course, the men ended this song in the only way fitting. They struck Captain Morgan poses, and as the last piano strains faded away, they all whispered “arrrrrr.”

Turning on a dime, the men then sang a calm Latin invocation, which asked God for peace. The audience responded to this order, quieting themselves, only to burst out laughing once more at the next piece. Schreuder introduced Joelle Keith, sophomore of Sterling, Colo., who strutted out in a large polka-dot dress, and called her Patsy Cline. The men formed an arc behind her, and as Keith belted Hank Cochran’s “She’s Got You,” the ensemble swayed and sang
