The town of Chadron filled up rapidly last weekend with supporters for embattled CSC coach Bill O’Boyle. A approximately 100 football players, their parents and local well-wishers gathered Saturday morning before Chadron’s final 2011 home game at Feik’s 120 Bar and Restaurant, then headed to the Elliot Field parking lot to tailgate.

The group certainly made an impact on attendance. Chadron’s penultimate home game, against Fort Lewis College, had 1,492 attendees. Saturday’s attendance shot up by more than 700 to 2,200 total.

The crowd’s maroon and white was interspersed with bright green T-shirts, bearing the white letters “O’B.” The shirts were ordered by a group of CSC football alumni including Mike Brownfield of Omaha and Cody Beguin, also of Omaha. The group also ordered similarly marked green wristbands that were worn by much of the team and several members of the coaching staff, including Defensive Coordinator Todd Auer and Offensive Line Coach Chris Smock.

According to Brownfield, the T-shirts were distributed in exchange for donations from supporters. Brownfield would not provide an estimate of how much was donated, but said that the money would be given to the O’Boyle family.

STUDENT SENATE

Cadre of administrators and staff attend senate, discuss library Molly Wedan Reporter Senate members brought their ideas on the library renovations to a group of faculty and staff dealing with the plans for renovations at Monday’s meeting.

Members and faculty discussed the two main aspects of the renovation: coffee shop and tutoring center.

The coffee shop would be more used if bonus bucks or alternative forms of payment, such as debit cards, were used according to a majority student senator consensus. However, Tracy Shuck, senior director of dining services, said the coffee shop must increase revenue in order for bonus bucks to be accepted. The coffee shop would be another part of food services; therefore, the money he is allocated would have to include the coffee shop. An option to increase revenue is to accept debit cards at the new coffee shop.

“Dining services would like to add a successful coffee shop,” Shuck said.

Student senate asked Aaron Prest-

wich, director of TRiO, and Frances Gonzalez, coordinator of tutoring services, about their feelings on the practicality of the move of the tutoring center. Gonzalez said, as mandated by Human Resources, tutors must be supervised when working with students.

Senate members asked if library staff could fulfill that role. No one present knew the answer and said they would look into it.

Prestwich said, “If we, or the tutoring center is asked to move, they’ll move.” Ultimately, the decision isn’t up to any of the staff employed at the Learning Center, but to the college administration.

In addition to the aforementioned attendees of the meeting, all three academic deans were in attendance, as well as the Vice President for Academic & Student Affairs.

Treasurer T.J. Thomson said there is $12,805 in un-allocated funds. Thomson also gave a report on the Finance Committee as President of the Finance Committee.

Thomson told members that the main item of business for the Finance

Committee is finding an online application where clubs and committees can regularly check their balances.

The mission statement for the committee is currently being written.

Jamie Wada, faculty adviser to Student Senate, and Cressey Yeutter, senator of E.H.P.C.P.S.W, talked about the survey Student Senate developed to gauge students’ thoughts about online classes. They said that the administration of the survey had been transferred to the Academic Review Committee, a sub-committee of the Faculty Senate.

Wada apologized that the reasons for the transfer were not announced sooner.

Deena Kennell, director of internships and career services, is leaving Friday for the Advocacy Action workshop in Lincoln. Anyone interested in attending can contact her in Crites 115. There is no cost for the workshop, but some meals will be at the expense of the student.

There will be no meeting next week due to Thanksgiving break.

The next meeting is scheduled for 5 p.m., Nov. 28.

Student government meetings cancelled Both the Student Senate and the Campus Activities Board cancelled their next weekly meetings due to concerns over lack of attendance.

The next Student Senate meeting is scheduled for 5 p.m., Nov. 28, and the next CAB meeting is slated for 6 p.m., Nov. 29.

Art guild hosts annual sale The CSC Art Guild is hosting their annual Christmas Sale beginning 9 a.m. Dec. 8 in the Ponderosa Room of the Student Center.

Local artists are welcome to sell their work, but the art guild receives a 20% commission.

International Education week declared The U.S. Departments of State and Education have jointly declared Nov. 14-18 as the 2011 “International Education Week.” In support of highlighting diversity and furthering cultural exchange, a number of events are taking place on the CSC campus during this week. At 5:30 p.m. tonight the International Club is hosting the “Foods of Many Cultures” event in the breezeway of the complex, and 5 p.m. Friday is an International Soccer Tournament at the NPAC. Pipeline rerouted, taxpayers to pay for impact survey T.J. Thomson Executive Editor TransCanada agreed Monday to alter the Keystone XL Pipeline’s route to avoid the Sand Hills region. The originally proposed route would stretch from Canada to Texas over Nebraska and the Ogallala Aquifer.

The announcement was conveyed

by Speaker of the Nebraska Legislature Mike Flood, of Norfolk, who delivered the news Monday in a special session of the Nebraska Legislature.

“They [TransCanada] have agreed to voluntarily move the route out of the Sandhills,” Flood said from the floor of the Nebraska Legislature according to the official news service of the legislature.

Gov. Dave Heineman called the legislature’s special session on Oct. 25, citing a need to enact legislation relating to oil pipelines.

Flood testified before the Nebraska Natural Resources Committee Tuesday afternoon in support of a com-

mittee amendment (AM37) that would place siting authority with the Public Service Commission rather than the governor.

“This is a win-win compromise,” Flood said in a telephone interview Tuesday about the rerouting of the pipeline.

In response to some Nebraskans

expressing concerns over TransCanada paying for the environmental impact statement, Flood’s amendment calls for the state portion of EIS to be administered at taxpayer expense.

Flood prefaced his rationale by saying, “We want to be judicious with taxpayer money.”

He continued, “This is a Nebraska issue, impacting our water, land, and people. If it is such a significant issue, it [the survey] should be funded by Nebraskans so as to ensure that it is free from bias or conflicts of interest.”

Normally, a fee for a survey or analysis is billed to the applicant; however, in this case, if approved, AM37 mandates that taxpayers, rather than the applicant, pay for the survey.

The fiscal note that was submitted along with the amendment specifically relating to the TransCanada EIS dictated that no more than $2 million be spent on the survey.

Sen. Tony Folton, of Lincoln, said Wednesday morning during day 11 of the special session of the 102nd Legislature that he thought $2 million was a bit high, but that the cost was worth the expense in order to protect the natural resources of Nebraska Amendment AM37, according to the Legislature Daily Journal, “was adopted with 45 ayes, zero nays, two present and not voting, and two excused and not voting.”

Commercialism is crashing Christmas and cashing in on it In the small town of Waynesville, N.C., there is a shop called “Christmas Is… Everyday,” which as the name implies sells Christmas products all year, seven days a week, 365. To the outsider it may either seem a little creepy or quaint. Creepy because it looks like an obsession, quaint because it is so unique.

Yet such a store is not far off from reality.

Here in Chadron the big box stores have already had their Christmas decorations and products up since the day after Halloween.

At Walmart, for example, the day before Halloween the store took down most of its haunted themes and costumes just to get ready for the next moneymaking season.

Even now Christmas music is already playing in some stores, and of course commercials advertising the best deals for the holidays have been on TV for weeks.

So eager are corporations to make a quick buck that Black Friday (the day after Thanksgiving where stores open early and have special deals) this year won’t happen – instead stores will be opening on Thanksgiving Day itself to peddle their Photo by rdesai wares. So much for time off for people to spend time with their families.

It’s bad enough that Christmas, whether viewed from a religious or non-religious view, has essentially become a corporate festival of silver and gold, but to drag this season of commercialized junk even further really burns out everyone and reduces Dec. 25 to an even greater disappointment and out-of-gas celebration.

Some apologists will say that all of the glitter and eye-candy is for the children, to fill them with wonder. But if that’s true then that means that we aren’t teaching our children to respect Christmas for the values of tradition or family, but to view it as an annual super elaborate birthday (not for the Galilean Carpenter) with flashy trees, tons of overpriced and cheaply made gifts, and hypes of Saint Nicholas and his magic-powered sleigh.

We need to stop falling for all of this commercial garbage and learn to appreciate our holidays for what they really stand for.

Before taking the title as Pope, Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger was Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, which oversees the cases of child molestation by priests worldwide. Ratzinger sent a letter to every Catholic bishop in the world that all cases of child abuse were to be kept silent and dealt with exclusively by the Congregation, and that all priests were to be “restrained by perpetual silence.

This is exactly what America saw with the pedophile cover-ups by Penn State University. Top coach Joe Paterno and PSU stood by for almost two decades as eight boys were allegedly raped and tortured by subordinate coach Jerry Sandusky. The descriptions of the filthy acts are enough to make one sick, but apparently not enough to do actively something about it, and PSU and Paterno (who was de-facto leader) allowed Sandusky to roam free for years.

The way the college system works, if a school’s name (or rather “brand”) is tarnished, then they could risk losing athletic funding. It makes me dizzy just thinking about how much our educational system is largely dependent on athletic and corporate associations just to retain students and

Flag desecration is a right, but it is wrong

In the past few weeks, there have been a handful of occasions where I have witnessed or have been told about people disrespecting the American flag. While incidents of disrespect are growing more common in modern society, it is none the less disheartening. If everyone could see the flag as our soldiers do, as a symbol of greatness and not just a piece of cloth, maybe these incidents would be far less common.

I have seen soldiers display remarkable care of the American Flag. I recall a soldier picking up a Velcro American Flag that had fallen off another soldier’s uniform during training. He carefully picked it up, brushed off the dirt, and placed it in his breast pocket for safekeeping.

To a soldier, our flag is more than simply a collection of colorful cloth. It is a constant reminder of our service to our country and the reasons why we chose to serve in the first place.

I remember being issued a flag of foliage green and black to wear in the deserts of Iraq. I was saddened that I could not wear the beautiful colors of our flag while opposing the enemies of the United States. But never the less, I still held this camouflaged flag in high regards and proudly wore it with honor.

The flag stands as a symbol of the greatest accomplishments and aspirations of America.

It is a rallying flag for those that support the concepts of liberty and Annis’ Flag Patch justice. It’s a flag that has been carried by countless individuals who fought injustice abroad and at home. It is a flag that millions have died protecting. The flag is a display of America’s continued dedication to the values that have made this country great.

The US Code Title 4, Chapter 1, §8 (J) clearly states, “The flag represents a living country and is itself considered a living thing.” How many of us would consider it acceptable to burn a living person or animal in protest? Very few.

So why would someone want to burn or spit on these colors? It would be far better to protest by proudly displaying a flag and the values

it stands for than to disgrace one. Our flag has always been a symbol of freedom and liberty.

Won’t burning such a symbol indicate that one stand s against these basic principles? Regardless of political view, I believe that all Americans can embrace the concept of honoring our flag.

Let it be known that if one burns our flag (in defiance of the basic tenants of America), I have no choice but to personally consider them as plainly un-American. Military personnel that have sworn to defend this country against all enemies both foreign and domestic, and millions of citizens, also do not think highly of such acts.

Yes, I will still continue to defend the right (and it really is a right) for others to burn the American flag. But I will also continue to be filled with sorrow and pity for those that have no concept of how their acts of vandalism are against one of the finest symbols in history.

If one truly seeks to make America better, no matter the cause, do not burn her colors but raise them high to rally fellow citizens back to the principles that have made this country what it is today.

A glimpse into the past . . .

Reta King included in Who’s Who book – Nov. 17, 1967 – Head librarian, Miss Reta King, was written into the fifth edition of “Who’s Who of American Women.” The book is a bibliographical dictionary of notable living women of the United States and other countries. King has been the secretary and past chairman of the Teacher’s College section of the Association of College and Research Libraries, and the present division treasurer of the American Association for University Women. King also served as a member of the American Library Association and the National Education Association.

RLA event contradicts its own fitness theme Ashley Swanson Columnist

With the cold weather settling on the campus grounds and winter right around the corner, it’s no surprise that events hosted for students would take place indoor.

Throughout the past weeks, there have been many different fun events, such as

the Galaxy Series programs, Peanut Butter Lovers’ month, and the All Hallows Ball, among others. Now, I’m usually up for all of these events; they’re fun, get students active, and keep them from staying cooped up in their rooms.

However, this Friday, Nov. 18, RLA is sponsoring a “Couch Potato” night.

I first found out about this event because of the 3D posters sitting on the front desks in some of the halls. The posters are well put together, don’t get me wrong, but I didn’t think I would see an event like this on campus. Empty soda cans and Frito bags are plastered to the front of the poster dis-

play and advertise lazinessw.

According to Housing and Residence Life Assistant Director, Shelby Huish, RLA is trying to promote a healthy lifestyle this year. This event does nothing to help students stay healthy especially if all they will be doing is sitting around, munching on junk food, and watching a movie.

As far as I knew, CSC was also trying to get people to be healthy by promoting healthy eating in both the Grille and cafeteria, and having so many fitness machines available in the NPAC. Even students in presentational speaking classes are doing persuasive speeches

on why people should eat healthy, or what will happen if a person doesn’t try to have a healthy lifestyle.

I’m not bashing RLA for hosting this event; it’s up to the students if they go to the NPAC or not, and it’s up to the students to determine how much they consume when they go to the cafeteria or the Grille.

However, I think the event goes against RLA’s promotion of having and keeping a healthy lifestyle. Students can be lazy and sit around doing nothing on their own time; they don’t need an event to help them with that. After all, the rest of America already seems to enjoy similar events all year long.

The green shirts gathered by the east endzone during the game’s nail-biting conclusion where, along with redshirted football players and an assortment of other fans, they became stupendously loud in support of the Eagles.

Several Eagle players expressed their gratitude for the emphatic support.

“It was great,” Jan Karlos Medina, junior defensive tackle of San Juan, Puerto Rico, said, “Seeing all the old faces and all the support.”

Jeremy Sondrup, inside receiver of Pleasant Grove, Utah, said the support had a “huge effect” on the team’s play.

“It was awesome,” Sondrup said. “It was great to have a loud crowd and have people getting into the game.”

And as the game wrapped up, the Eagles marched off to offer some support of their own.

The team and coaching staff, followed by football alumni and curious fans, set off north across campus. As they neared the corner of Former Head Football Coach Bill O’Boyle hugs Trey 10th and Bordeaux streets, their intent begame against Colorado Mesa University on O’Boyle came clear. “I’m always with you guys, regardless of what happens,” he said.

His mother, Joan O’Boyle, also spoke.

The march to O’Boyle’s house was the brainstorm of the Eagles’ senior football players.

“We thought it would be great to honor O’Boyle,” Tim Hiett, senior offensive guard of Arvada, Colo., said. “Everybody on the football team loves O’Boyle to death. We know he would do anything for us and we’ll do the same for him.”

In addition to the game ball, the team presented O’Boyle with a number 74 jersey (O’Boyle’s number as a player at West Illinois University, Macomb, was 74.), signed by the offensive linemen, and the sledgehammer that is carried onto the field by the team at the beginning of every game, signed by the senior players.

Brad Smith, who was assigned the head coach position after O’Boyle’s suspension, did not accompany the team to O’Boyle’s house Saturday.

“They [the players] were going down there to thank O’Boyle. I didn’t feel it was my place to go down there with them,” Smith said. “I didn’t go because I’m in the middle of an investigation.

All I ask is that people wait until the dust settles before laying blame.”

The Eagle attempted to contact CSC President Janie Park Monday via email but did not receive a response by press time Wednesday. According to Park’s secretary, the president has been offcampus all week and will return today.

What is your motivation for returning to Chadron State for the final 2011 season game?

“Hopefully people make a statement that we can come together as a family, because there are a lot of guys we don’t know but we are still here together.”

Early on it seemed as though the season would end on a sour note.

Penalties and turnovers plagued the Eagles in the first half and the found themselves trailing by 7 at the break.

Colorado Mesa opened up the second half by recovering a surprise onside kick. At this point it looked like the bad luck would continue for the Eagles, but after a quick three

and out, the offense got their chance when Chapman Ham, sophomore of Rapid City, S.D., tied the game for the Eagles with a 15-yard touchdown catch. After a pair of field goals, the final quarter would start with both teams tied at 10. Early in the fourth quarter, it looked as if the Mavericks would take the lead with a 29-yard field goal, but offensive tackle Garrett Gilkey, junior, of Sandwich, Ill., broke through the line and blocked the kick. This gave the Eagles plenty of momentum heading into the ensuing possession.

With the tides appearing to swing their way, quarterback Brandon Gorsuch, junior of Rapid City, S.D., and the offense marched 80-yards downfield in just over five minutes, and scored the go ahead touchdown. Wide receiver Allan Schmaltz, junior, of Rapid City, S.D., was able to jump over the line and into the end zone to polish off the impressive nine-play drive.

After a good kick return and a penalty, Colorado Mesa was set up in great position to quickly tie the game. On their second play, Mesa quarterback, Robert Felberg, junior from Aurora, Colo., connected with sophomore receiver, Nathan Neville, of Littleton, Colo., for 35-yards and a touchdown. With less then nine minutes left in the game the score was tied 17-17.

After an eight-play drive ended in a punt, the Eagles would have to play solid defense to keep the Mavericks out of the endzone and give themselves one last chance at the win. CSC’s defense man-

aged to force a punt, giving the offensive squad just under two minutes to score with 75 yards of green space between them and the end zone. After running six plays, the offense was unable to get into position for a score. The fourth quarter would end in a tie, sending the game into overtime.

After winning the coin toss, Colorado Mesa elected to play defense and gave the Eagles the first opportunity in overtime. After two nice runs by sophomore Glen Clinton, of Cody, Wyo., and a personal foul penalty by Mesa, the Eagles found themselves with a first and goal situation from the five yard line. After an incomplete pass, quarterback Gorsuch hit Alcorn, who was able to stretch the ball over the goal line for the touchdown. After the extra point, CSC was up 24-17 Now it was the Eagles turn to play defense. On the first play of the drive, junior, Keifer Burke, of Brady, got into the backfield and tackled the ball carrier for a three-yard loss. The Eagles defense would break up passes on second and third down, forcing the Mavericks into a fourth and long situation that would decide the game. After a timeout, the Mavericks threw for the first down, but the pass fell incomplete, giving the Eagles a 24-17 victory.

With the win, the Eagles finished the season with a 6-5 record. The Eagles placed fourth in the RMAC with a 6-3 in-conference record.

CSC Theatre’s latest play leaves audiences in ‘Doubt’ Kevin Oleksy Web Editor From the moment the first spotlight illumines a lone figure—a priest in a pulpit—John Patrick Shanley’s “Doubt” sets its audience on a path of uncertainty.

Chadron State Theatre’s production is wellplayed all around. The cast members’ memorable performances leave the audience in the perfect state of disarray the playwright intended.

Mason Quinn, senior of Cheyenne, Wyo., plays the priest, Father Brendan Flynn, a new addition to St. Nicholas Catholic Church and School. Flynn’s sermon concerning doubt sets up the major conflict of the play. Flynn admonishes the audience—his putative parishioners—that they are not alone in doubting themselves or others.

“Doubt can be a bond as powerful and sustaining as certainty,” Flynn says.

Quinn’s Flynn is clearly a beloved and progressive parish priest, but these qualities are only established in contrast to his foil. Shalee Jones, senior of Crawford, plays the matriarchal Sister Aloysius, principal of the school and arbiter of taste for the students and sisters she oversees.

Aloysius is not a progressive woman. She hates ballpoint pens because they cause students to bear down on the page and write sloppily.

And she derides Sister James, played by Amber Nightingale, senior of Morrill, for being too interested in her students, and too excited about teaching history.

Even when Aloysius confiscates a transistor radio from a student, and we later see her listening to it in her office—a glimmer of levity perhaps?

But no, her listening turns out to be utilitarian.

She only listens to the news, because she detests music.

Shanley hammers home a one-dimensionality in Aloysius. She has no doubts about who she is, the job she does, and how she must teach the others around her to be. Jones delivers her voluble lines quickly and with conviction.

Early on she tells James, “Wits must be cold.

Children should be uncomfortable around you.”

At the close of this conversation, Aloysius asks James, “Is something the matter?”

James replies, “I don’t think so.”

Aloysius concludes, “nothing is the matter.”

Despite the outward show of certainty, a small crack begins to appear in Aloysius tough exterior. After saying nothing is the matter, she warns James to be alert about Father Flynn. Aloysius is wary because Flynn has befriended Donald Muller, a boy new to the school, and its only black student.

Despite being set in 1964, the play is incredibly timely owing to the rash of scandals relating to priests sexually abusing boys that have come to light in the last decade. However, living up to its title, Shanley’s play never gives a concrete answer as to whether Flynn has crossed the line.

Quinn has shown his skill playing many tor-

mented characters, and even an outright sexual predator, in previous Black Box productions. But with this portrayal, Quinn shows nothing to indicate that Father Flynn is a monster. Quinn plays the priest with an overwhelmingly believable innocence.

However, in the early conversations Aloysius has with James, it becomes clear that she has been brewing a deep dislike for Flynn virtually from the moment he set foot at St. Nicholas. At one point, Flynn enters her office and commences to write notes for his next sermon with a ballpoint pen, two scenes after Aloysius delivers her diatribe against them.

Jones goes to great lengths to make her Aloysius brim with outrage, while maintaining a calm outward demeanor. Her outbursts are few and often over a small detail. When Flynn asks for three lumps of sugar in his tea, she blusters “Three?!” and then is quiet again.

Though the primary characters are Flynn and Aloysius, the conflict of the play flows from the masterful incompetence of Nightingale’s Sister James. Another veteran of CSC Theatre productions, Nightingale brings to life a sister struggling with tremendous self-doubt. At first, her James is putty in Aloysius’ hands, clinging to all the harshness and suspicion the more experienced sister teaches her. It is out of Sister James’ recently cultivated alertness that Aloysius’ distaste for Flynn grows into the “certainty” that he abused Donald Muller.

However, when Aloysius remains certain despite Flynn’s convincing claims to the contrary and his winning over of James’ trust, she moves to find another cohort to support her condemnation. Enter Le’Chere Campbell, freshman of Bellevue, as Donald’s mother, Mrs. Muller.

Though Campbell is a new face for CSC Theatre, she brings a subtle but powerful performance as Mrs. Muller. Campbell brings to life the difficulties that many blacks endured in the 1960s. Her response to the allegations is shocking, but has its own logic.

The story unravels quickly after Aloysius doesn’t get the support she hoped for from Mrs. Muller or the monsignor of St. Nicholas.

The audience is left to make its own judgements, and the question remains: was Aloysius right about Flynn? As the lights fade to blackness, Aloysius clings to Sister James and through tears, she mutters, “I have doubts. I have such doubts.”

“Doubt” opens at 7 p.m. with shows today, Friday, Saturday, and a 2 p.m. matinee on Sunday.

Kelsey Amos Lifestyles Reporter Without a doubt, the CSC Theatre Department has a reputation for producing dark, thoughtprovoking plays in the Black Box Theatre. Their production of “Doubt” is no exception. This play addresses serious issues yet leaves the audience to draw its own conclusions. The small cast and stage make this production intimate and gripping.

“Doubt,” which is billed as a parable, exposes a scandal at a Catholic school when Sister Aloysius Beauvier, the stern principal, accuses Father Brendan Flynn of inappropriate relations with the only African-American student at the school, Donald Muller.

Sister Aloysius rules with an iron fist and a starched habit. She tries to preserve a traditional system of education and religion. Sister James, a young innocent teacher, wants to avoid conflict yet becomes drawn into the middle of it. Father Flynn is a priest who thinks that the school and church should be friendlier and open to new ideas. He coaches boys’ basketball and watches out for Donald Muller. When Aloysius accuses Flynn of pedophilia, conflict brews as Flynn vehemently insists that he is innocent.

Sister James waivers back and forth as to whether she thinks Flynn is guilty. This production places audience members in the same dilemma; just when the evidence against Flynn seems conclusive, doubts arise about the validity of Aloysius’ accusations. The actors play their roles in a way that make both conclusions seem equally plausible.

Shalee Jones, senior of Crawford, plays Sister Aloysius. She initially seemed to be recreating her previous role as the stern aunt from last year’s production of “The Importance of Being Earnest.” However, as the play progresses, Jones develops Aloysius into a complex character in-

stead of what originally seems like a one-sided character. While Aloysius possesses concrete convictions, her expression of doubt at the end of the play gives her character real depth.

Mason Quinn, senior of Cheyenne, Wyo., balances the role of Father Flynn in a way that convinces the audience that he is innocent, and then guilty, within the same scene. Flynn is a charismatic priest who cares about the boys yet harbors personal doubt that hints at another side of his personality. Quinn makes it seem plausible that Flynn could be innocent or guilty.

Amber Nightingale, senior of Morrill, plays Sister James as a young, innocent nun who acts as a foil to the skeptical Aloysius. Because Sister James does not have a backbone, the few occasions when she expresses her opinion are satisfying. While Sister James is an emotional, impressionable character, her hysterics occasionally seem overly theatric Le’Chere Campbell, freshman of Bellevue, plays the mother of Donald Muller, a troubled boy. She creates a contrast in perspective between Mrs. Muller and Aloysius, who judges from behind the unyielding walls of the parish church. Campbell provides a realistic, yet disturbing reaction to the possible abuse of Mrs. Muller’s son.

While the acting is strong, the beginning of the play rushes quickly into the conflict. Father Flynn is barely introduced before Aloysius decides that he is guilty. There is not enough time to establish Flynn’s character before accusations are thrown at him, although this may be a consequence of the play’s shorter duration.

The Black Box’s intimate setting puts the audience uncomfortably close to the conflict.

“Doubt” incorporates the sensitive issues of child abuse in the Catholic church, homosexuality, and racial discrimination. Although these issues can often be dodged in life, the audience cannot distance themselves from the issues within this production. “Doubt” is not a reassuring play with a neat resolution. Instead, the characters’ consternation will leave audience members with doubts of their own.

‘I guess I’m retired’ Kevin Oleksy Web Editor (This is the final in a four-part series on the life and “Ornery Times” of Chadron resident Don Holst.)

Don Holst, 81, of Chadron, was born during the Great Depression and grew up during World War II. Of his birth and upbringing, Holst said, “I was conceived the day the stock market fell. So I was off to a good start. When I got a little older, we had a world war. It was ornery times.”

Holst has been memorialized for his unorthodox coaching methods in a story

by Con Marshall for pulling runners on a rope behind an old Chevy to improve their speed.

Holst also recalled that since the track program had a very small budget, he would have his athletes run up the stairs in High Rise. However, to avoid the detrimental effect of running back down the stairs, coach and athletes would take the elevator back down. This seemed a great idea until some students in the hall complained the elevators had a bad smell.

After nine years at CSC, Holst sought to expand his horizons. He moved on to teach and coach at McKendree University in Lebanon, Ill. Holst spent about 16 years at McKendree, during which time he served as a coach, professor, head of secondary education, and interim dean.

In the 1980s, Holst also spent an abundance of time as coach for blind athletes.

And in 1983 he coached at the International Games for the Blind in New York.

Holst said, “The experience was really great. They were some of the best athletes I have been honored to coach.”

Holst became interested in the Olympic

Oak trees during the 1980s.

The trees were a group of 130 saplings presented by Adolf Hitler to gold-medal winners at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin.

Of approximately 24 saplings brought home by athletes from the U.S., many died or disappeared. Holst heard from one athlete that his sapling was confiscated by customs in New York City, to be checked for bugs, and then never seen again. (Read more about Holst’s Olympic Oaks below.)

Holst retired in 1991 and a few years later, returned to Chadron where he built a cabin a few miles south of town.

Since then he has kept up a steady pace of projects including painting, writing poetry, authoring two books about athletes, and donating Olympic Oak saplings.

When I asked Holst about being so busy as a retiree, he said, “I guess I’m retired.”

His books “American Men of Olympic Track and Field: Interviews with Athletes and Coaches,” co-authored with Marcia S. Popp, and “Famous Football Players in Their 4th Quarter,” have been generally well received.

Among his letters, Holst has one from Warren Buffet, chairman of Berkshier Hathaway, Inc., saying he enjoyed the book.

Buffet also states, “Believe it or not, I was a water boy for two Redskin games in which Sammy Baugh started.” Baugh’s picture is the cover of Holst’s book.

Holst remains fairly active these days, and is well-known around Chadron. I walked around Walmart with him recently, and nearly every person greeted him by name.

One man brought a quick smile to Holst’s lips when he yelled “hey coach!”

In summation of his life’s deeds and accomplishments, Holst said, “Whatever happens to an individual is because of the goodness of somebody else. All the fun and games I’ve had are directly or indirectly because of someone else.”

In the 1980s, Holst took an avid interest in the “Olympic Oaks.”

The Guardian, a British newspaper, called the Oaks, “possibly the oddest sporting prizes ever awarded.”

Gold medal winners in the 1936 Berlin Olympics were each presented with an oak sapling by Adolf Hitler. Many of the 130 oaks disappeared, but others were planted in the athletes’ home towns.

After a significant amount of research and letter-writing, Holst began cultivating and donating saplings from the acorns of

surviving oaks he was able to locate.

Holst has gathered acorns from the tree presented to 1936 800-meter run gold medalist John Woodruff. The tree continues to grow in Connellsville, Pa. Holst has donated saplings to sites in Colorado, Indiana, Kansas, and Missouri.

He also gave one to Chadron State College in 1989.

Two weeks ago, Holst was contacted by McPherson College in McPherson, Kan. The 1936 Olympic Basketball team was from McPherson.

Holst stands with Chadron State discus-thrower Benny Francis prior to a National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics conference in 1967, at which Francis was a top contender. He broke the CSC record for discus at 174-5 in 1967 until his record was broken in 1998 by Dough Lytle with a throw of 175-5.

Holst was on the track and football teams at Emporia State University, Emporia, Kan., from 1949 to 1953.

Holst’s family, wife Beverly, daughter LeAnn, and son Chris outside their home in Columbia, Mo., in 1956.

Holst said times were hard on his family while he was in the Marine Corps, stationed in Vieques, Puerto Rico. Holst was unable to be present at either child’s birth.

Ruth lived to be 15 1/2 years old.

Paintings Since his retirement in 1991, Holst has taken an active interest in painting.

His home is decorated with many wildlife water colors as well as oils and acrylics he has worked on over the years.

Last year Holst donated several of his paintings to Chadron State College in memory of his friend Ron Weedon, late professor of physical and life sciences.

The Importance of Pets Holst’s current pets, Demi the cat, and Moshi his golden retriever lay down together outside his home.

Holst calls them “two good friends.”

Holst is a life-long animal lover who has always had pets. For the last 40 years he has kept golden retrievers.

Holst said “As a youngster I was always dragging home some puppy or cat—once even a baby raccoon that purred like a cat.”

Holst also had a pet chicken that would sit on the handlebars of his bike while he rode around town. People in Marysville often doubted the chicken was so amiable and accused the young Holst of having its
