A sense of anticipation and excitement rustled through the crowd as they

A brisk morning greeted students and a few faculty members as they made their way to the Student Center for the “Bioterrorism Talks” presentation Friday.

An FBI Intelligence Analyst gave three presentations throughout the morning, all of them focusing on different areas of diseases, biological terrorism, and how the FBI finds terrorists.

His first presentation, “Category ‘A:’ Biological Agent,” focused on Ebola, anthrax, and plague, and how they affect humans and how they work.

Ebola, a Viral Hemorrhagic Fever, was brought up frequently due to the current outbreak, along with statistical figures about the disease. Ebola’s lethality, death rate, is usually 20 percent, but with this outbreak the lethality has been unusually high with 60-80 percent, he said.

The way Ebola works is that it

infects the white blood cells in the body, which usually fight infections. In order to stop the infection from spreading, the antibodies kick in, but cannot overcome the disease, so they are killed by Ebola also; these are usually known as the second defense from infections.

From there, the infected person develops a high fever, and their blood moves rapidly throughout the body, which makes the person bleed from most orifices. This is often seen in the eyes, mouth, nose, and ears. Eventually, that person’s organs start to shut down because of the loss of blood, leading to death. In the beginning stages when a person becomes sick with Ebola it looks likes tonsillitis, flu, or strep because it comes with a fever and a sore throat.

He then spoke about plagues.

Plagues come from fleas who find their way to human skin, bite them, ingesting the human’s blood, but also transferring their own infected blood and saliva into the human.

Along with plagues, he talked about bacillus anthracis, or anthrax. Farmers and ranchers generally deal with anthrax because cows catch it by kicking up soil and

breathing it in. Anthrax is in all parts of the soil everywhere.

In theory, anthrax isn’t necessarily bad for a person. It’s not the substance itself that is harmful, but instead the plasma in it that makes a person sick. Anthrax acts like a protective antigen for the plasma; the plasma cannot hurt anyone by itself so it uses anthrax like a host.

There are three ways a person can ingest anthrax. The first and most common method is through cutaneous, when anthrax spores go into the skin through a cut. It cannot be absorbed through the skin.

According to the Center for Disease Control website, this is the least dangerous of the three because it usually takes one-seven days to develop and if properly treated, most patients survive the infection.

The second is inhalational, which is just breathing in anthrax spores. This affects the lungs and causes breathing problems, but also spreads throughout the rest of the body. This takes about a week to develop, and untreated will result in death.

The third way is gastrointestinal, when a person ingests raw or

undercooked meat from an animal infected with anthrax.

This is the rarest of the three, but also the most dangerous with the highest mortality rate. This affects the digestive tract and takes anywhere from one-17 days to develop. A positive side to anthrax is that is cannot be transferred from one person to another.

In his second session, “Lasting Effects of a Weaponized Biological Agent,” the FBI Investigative Analyst talked about how people use these diseases and toxins to infect other people. There are three elements terrorists usually follow when planning an attack, he said.

They are opportunity, intent, and capabilities/knowledge. What are they going to use?

Most often, people who design these attacks are politically motivated to enforce a violent attack on civilians, and want to be known.

When a person does plan an attack, they must account for numerous items including the weather; what kind of virus they want to use; if they want people to just get sick, or if they want them to die; and if they want people to die, do they want their death to occur slowly or

quickly. This is also where the capabilities and knowledge come in, because if the people wanting to attack have no to little knowledge about viruses or diseases, then they are not necessarily a threat. For instance, he said bombs are not a good use for a viral attack because viruses and bacteria cannot survive in hot temperatures; therefore, a bomb, which emits heat, would not do any good.

He also talked about biological weapons, and how the military chooses not to use them. Biological weapons cannot be controlled, so there is always that chance of hurting others besides the enemy.

It makes no sense for the military to use them, he said.

“Ebola as a biological Weapon” was the final topic discussed.

He focused mainly on the outbreaks of Ebola, spanning back to 1967, to current outbreaks, and how the FBI can predict how a terrorist could use the disease as a weapon—and how they could stop someone from bringing an outbreak to America.

Senate discusses recycling, ice machines, leadership trip Ashley Swanson Managing Editor Finding issues with substance to bring to Senate was a heavily discussed topic during Monday’s meeting.

Senior Director of Student Affairs Pat Beu, reiterated what Adviser Deena Kennell has said in the past, that Senate needs to focus on issues of substance.

He suggested the senators talk to their constituents and ask them what is most important to students.

Senator of E.S.P.C.H.P.W. Karson Langley then brought up the lack of recycling bins oncampus. She said it was inconvenient to go to Walmart or Safeway to recycle items. She

also said the two maroon recycling bins that were on-campus were removed.

Senator of Edna Hall Taylor Osmotherly, said Senate could talk to the Solid Waste Agency of Northwest Nebraska about obtaining recycling bins.

Vice President Taylor Strong said she would talk to Shellie Johns and see if there was any way they could buy some for the Student Center.

Osmotherly brought up wanting at least one ice machine on-campus, or adding them to the dormitories. For RLA events it’s a nuisance to have to buy ice at a store when they could get some from an ice machine on-campus, he said.

Chief Justice Jon Lordino suggested going to the athletic department for ice, as they

have machines.

Adviser Susan Schaffer said Osmotherly would need to talk to CSC’s Vice Chair of Finances Dale Grant for new ice machines.

Grant was a part of the discussion for ice machines a few years ago, so he is aware of what needs to be done, Schaffer said.

Senator of Liberal Arts Mikayla Gallagher said she had had a number of students ask her if Senate would be going to Disney World while they were in Florida. Lordino said, although the conference is in Florida. He said they may have free time at night when they can tour the area, or even go to Disney World, but the money to do so would come out of the individuals pocket.

Senate is not paying for those expenses, only travel and meals.

CAB chairwoman to resign Jordyn Hulinsky Sports Editor At the next meeting, Kelsey Empfield, CAB Chair, will be stepping down from her position on the executive board. The Vice Chair of Programming Andy Martin will move into the Chair position and nominations for Vice Chair of Programming are now open.

There will be no CAB meeting Tuesday, so nominations for Vice Chair of Programming will be open until Dec. 2.

There was only one nomination at the meeting; Sara Donnelly nominated herself. Members can send nominees via email to the executive board.

The responsibilities of the Vice Chair include setting the dates for free bowling and movie nights, which Martin has already done for the next semester; adding slides to the slideshow in the Student Center, with the help of Shellie Johns; and have to attend executive meetings at 5:30 p.m., every Tuesday.

Martin reported that 178 students attended free bowling night and 292 attended free movie night. Xi Delta Zeta said they collected 90 canned food items from free movie

night. The final free movie night of the semester is Dec. 7.

Stephanie Steele, vice chair of records, asked clubs to complete their updated club packets. She asked that if there are any major changes to club’s constitutions that they mark them with a sticky note. She reminded members that the packets are due by the end of the semester.

Kelley McNabb, vice chair of finance, opened nominations for the Activity Fees Board. Two students were nominated at the meeting: Molly O’Connell and Annie Johnson.

Nominees for AFB can also be emailed to the executive board. She also reported $3,030 in unallocated funds.

Vice Chair of Relations Mikayla Gallagher said if members aren’t already, they should follow CAB on twitter and, add them on Facebook and Instagram. She also said if clubs want anything shared on social media to let her know.

CAB Adviser Laure Sinn had members look at the Board of Trustees Policy 3300. She also made sure members knew that Senate passed the Health Magazine 101.

Steele mentioned that there is a Madrigal Dinner on Dec. 6 and 7. Tickets for the event are $35 a piece, and it includes a three-course meal and a capella entertainment from various singing groups on campus.

Those going on the trip left yesterday and will return in time for the next Senate meeting, weather permitted.

Vice Chair of Finances said there is $121,933.85 in total unallocated funds. Senate allocated $940.60 for the lunch and dinner during the State Leadership Conference with Wayne and Peru State’s.

Discussion on ice removal on-campus also ensued. Many of the senators agreed that a new ice removal system needs to be thought of.

Schaffer suggestion inviting Grant to a Senate meeting where this issue, the recycling bins, and ice machines could be talked about with him; however, Schaffer suggested not inviting him until Senate’s first meeting in January.

BRIEFS

Swag decorating slated for Saturday Led by Lucinda Mays, there will be a group of students, and others that will be making greenery swags to decorate for the holidays 9 a.m., Saturday in the Mari Sandoz Center.

These will be used to decorate the Main Gates, the Student Center and several service organizations around

town.

Each participant will create a fresh greenery swag to take home.

The greenery will be provided but, participants are asked to bring their own pruning tools and ribbons. Everyone is welcome to help create and decorate.

Senior art show reception set for Friday The 2014 Senior Art show reception will take place 4-6 p.m., Friday in the main gallery of Memorial Hall.

The art show is titled, “What is Enough?’ and highlights five senior artists.

Arielle Boone of Buffalo, Wyoming; Mattie Churchill of Hemingford; Krystal Gaar of Grant; Kevin Kubo of Chad-

ron; and Ashley Young of Gordon, will be featured.

They have complied a show filled with paintings, photographs, sculptures, pottery, and many other mediums to show their personal artistic styles.

Gallery hours are 9 a.m. 4:30 p.m., in the main gallery of Memorial Hall.

ANALYST Currently there are six known strains of Ebola-Reston, Sudan, Zaire, Tai Forest, Bundibugyo, and Marburg.

All of these strains come from the area where the outbreak occurred. The worst outbreak is the Zaire outbreak, which is the current West Africa outbreak people have heard about in the news. It is at 14,000 victims for the outbreak, with a mortality rate of no more than 90 percent. However, the first outbreak of this strand came in 1976.

One issue with the strains is that they can mix and turn into a more lethal strain.

in the West Africa area. Animals are more likely to carry the strains and spread them to humans, according to the FBI Intelligence Analyst. If pigs were to be exposed to two different Ebola strains and they mixed inside the pig, a new strain could be produced.

There is no way of knowing when this would happen, and if the outcome would be lethal, but it is an option the FBI look into in case it does happen.

The FBI use discussions to figure out how someone could access Ebola, store it, and even multiply it to use as a weapon.

Jon Hansen speaks about changes to board policy Sarah Townsend News Editor In an all campus meeting Thursday, Jon Hansen, vice president of enrollment management, marketing and student services briefed the attendees on the approved revisions to NSCS Board Policy 3020 which provides the policies and procedures involving sexual violence or sexual harassment reporting. These revisions were approved by the Board of Trustees at the board meeting Nov. 7.

“Society must hold men accountable, and men need to hold other men accountable,” Hansen said.

He went on to say that it was worth the time to look at the changes in the board policy because there has been a shift in approach regarding these issues.

Hansen brought to the audiences’ attention the changes made in the definitions of dating violence, domestic violence, sexual assault, sexual contact, sexual penetration, sex harassment, sexual violence, and consent.

These changes were made because the Department of Education required a clarification in the definitions.

Hansen said that the college has the responsibility to investigate issues, even if there is no police involvement.

“Students need to be aware,” Hansen said.

Hansen stressed the importance of reporting incidents to Shelley Dunbar, title nine coordinator, or the three newly appointed deputy investigators; Dawn Brammer, HPER assistant professor, Ricci Sanders, housing and residence life project coordinator, and Melissa Burke, athletics compliance coordinator.

Hansen explained the disciplinary process and consequences in these cases. He said that the college may decide to take action prior to a formal charge is filed.

“Our number one priority is to get to the victim or survivor at earliest opportunity and provide support,” Hansen said.

To end his presentation, Hansen announced CSC’s plan to reduce/eliminate sex assault and harassment and domestic violence. The plan included five objectives; 1) Crack down on offenders, 2) Increase support for survivors, 3) Improve prevention and education, 4) Improve communication, and 5) Listen and report back: 100 percent.

Jenny Kingsley reminded the audience that they could donate gifts and other items to underprivileged children at places around campus.

Laure Sinn reminded everyone that it is Native American history month and that there are many events around campus happening in conjunction.

EBOLA: FAST FACTS There are six known strains of The strain that is affecting West Africa currently, was first discovered in Zaire in 1976.

‘The Reston Strain,’ found in Reston, Viginia, 1989, was the first strian found in the United States. No fatalities occured.

It’s time to declaw student gov. fat-cats

E

ight members of your student government, and one lucky member of the student body at-large, will attend a conference this weekend at a Walt Disney World resort in Orlando, Florida. Students are footing the bill.

The weather forecast looks pleasant; roughly 70-80 degrees the whole weekend. We sincerely hope that the delegates will remember us poor souls freezing in Nebraska while they blow $18,500 of your student activity fees.

But while the fat-cats are away, perhaps the mice should play.

Action is the quickest means to bring about political change, so let’s examine some of the actions outlined in the Chadron State College Student Association Constitution [http://tinyurl. com/ldgs6dp].

Article VII, Section 1 states; “Any representative of the Student Association may be subject to removal from office.

Any student may initiate removal by submitting a petition to the Chief Justice bearing the signatures of ten (10) percent of the current student enrollment.”

Based on the Fall 2013 student enrollment information, [http://www.csc.edu/ir/enrollment.csc], total enrollment was 3,056 students. About 306 students would need to sign a written petition to remove a lame-duck Senator from office.

Section 1 goes on to state; “A Senator may initiate removal by submitting a petition to the Chief Justice bearing the signatures of five (5) Senators. The Court shall conduct a hearing at which time a defense shall be heard from the Senator. “ So what happens next? Section 3 states; “Petitions must be considered and ruled upon within one (1) week following the hearing. Upon certification, the petition shall be submitted to the Senate. A two-thirds majority vote of its members shall be sufficient for removal from office.”

Let’s point out how ludicrous the laws governing our government are. Even if an extremely motivated student were to draft 15 petitions (one for each Senator), and garner the required 306 signatures for each petition, Senators could still defend their ineffectiveness to a court of their peers. They could then vote on whether they keep their offices or not.

The last Senate election results were released in Spring 2012; roughly 200 students voted. Given this demonstrated student apathy, it’s hard to imagine our hypothetical student acquiring the needed-306 signatures.

But another avenue is available that could declaw the fat-cats and force the student leadership to become fiscally responsible.

Students should petition and lobby for a constitutional amendment that prohibits the Senate from engaging in this sort of wasteful, self-aggrandizing spending.

Through action, we just might be able to put a stop to this Mickey-Mouse business, once and for all.

Inside ‘honesty syndrome’ Spike Jordan Opinion Editor

I

suffer from something I like to call “honesty syndrome.”

One of the traits of the disorder is that I force the illusion of humility.

When I do something that I perceive to be good or noble, I then feel the immediate need to undercut whatever positive impacts there might be, regardless of whether those impacts are intentional or merely consequential. However, honesty syndrome only allows me to forestall bragging, rather than admitting that I am actually a narcissistic piece of shit.

To my discredit, I hide behind my work, which is usually garbage. I openly illustrate my gross incompetence to the campus every week; presenting ideas which are boring, terrible, and/or unfunny. I know I’m stating the obvious, but please indulge my self-deprecating rant for a little bit longer. It won’t be worth it, and you can rest assured that this article is only going to get worse.

I’ve been writing for four years, and I still have no clue what I’m doing. I should have learned something by now, but I’m far too dense to get the point. Not only am I stupid; I’m powerfully stupid.

I’m obligated to point out that there are far better writers on this campus, but for some reason they won’t climb out from the woodwork and be published.

So I guess I can count, “recruiting readable-columnists,” among my laundry list of failures. Hold your applause; I assure you that this is still a continuing tragedy.

It takes courage to get up in front of people and sing, recite poetry, or perform in any way. I applaud people who do that, whether it was just once or on a regular basis. I go to events and actually enjoy their performances. What I do not enjoy, however, is hearing a drunk college student on the other side of the Student Center Ballroom sing off-key to a song that the performer is singing to.

Unfortunately that was the case Thursday during CSC’s second competition of “The Voice.” I was covering the event and noticed a group of people being obnoxious and saw that they were attempting to contain one of their very intoxicated friends from drawing more attention.

After two more performers, they instead began encouraging their friend and even started taking photos and videos of how their friend was acting.

I have no problem with the audience quietly singing while a performer is singing, so long as they are not drawing attention away from the performer. I was disgusted with how this group of people conducted themselves, and I know I was not the only person distracted by their behavior. Multiple times I saw people in the front row turn around and stare at the group in the back of the room, as they were being loud and laughing.

If you do not plan on paying attention to the event and wish to be drunk, stay home. There are other people who actually want to enjoy an event, even if all they do is watch a performance.

Along those lines, people need to learn how to conduct themselves at sporting events. Yes, at games you can hoot and holler all you want to cheer on your team, and I’m all for that. However, Friday night the exact same group from Thursday showed up to the game, and a handful

Despite the freezing temperatures Thursday, students flocked to the Student Center in mass groups. The ballroom is set up with rows of chairs; a small stage is placed at the front of them. A sound system sits next to the stage. Students find a seat near their friends, the lights dim, and a voice comes through the speakers—the event has started. I am talking about the popular, second annual CSC’s “The Voice” competition.

I was the sidekick photographer with our photo editor, and besides going to the event to take photos, do you know what else I went there for? You didn’t guess it.

I went to listen to the crowd talk. Yep, I didn’t face the cold to listen to 10 students brave standing on stage to be stared at by hundreds of eyes and share their voices with the campus.

Nope, I definitely went to listen to audience members talk and sing along with the soloists because that’s the best part of any event with a performer. I especially loved the moment when I couldn’t hear the performer anymore because the group standing behind me was singing so loudly, and let me tell you what, I absolutely loved hearing them mess up some of the words and sing out of tune.

Now, I know not all events involve an audience listening to a performer; some actually allow conversation to commence, such as a crafty event—with those I actually go for the crafts and not the conversations. I also enjoy participating in other events such as carving pumpkins or Trickor-Treating around the dorms.

However, when it comes to events such as “The Voice” competition or open mic nights, my favorite part is when everyone claps for the next person heading for the stage, and then once that person opens their mouth, everyone in the crowd starts

were drunk. Want to know how I could tell? They couldn’t get into the stands by themselves and had friends help, and they were falling all over and being obnoxious, not cheering, but just being loud. I have a problem with people acting a fool in front of the player’s families and community members. Those people represent not only the college, but any club or organization they are a part of.

When people see someone drunk and making a fool of him or herself, it puts the college and organization they are associated with in a bad light. This is not the first time I have noticed intoxicated students at games, and unfortunately, it probably won’t be the last. You are there to watch the event, not center the attention on yourself. If you want the attention, get involved in something where you can be the center of attention and show off there. Otherwise, be respectful and show support.

The group that showed up and distracted me both nights have lost all respect from me, and unfortunately they are members of a well-known group on campus.

If you are going to attend an event on campus where you are not participating, be respectful and conduct yourself in a way that you wish people to remember you. If I see you at an event acting like a hot mess, when I see you any other time I will see you in the same light.

Do you know what makes these situations even better? When those people are drunk, and can barely stay in one place for two seconds, let alone keep their mouths shut. I really didn’t want to listen to that girl play the piano and sing a song, nor did I want to hear that poem being read with such emotion—those things don’t matter.

I just go to events to get out of my dorm room, and since I find the performers boring, I just tune in to other people’s conversations, which isn’t difficult to do, considering people in Eagle Ridge can hear them. Alright, maybe they weren’t that loud, but I’m sure the performers could hear them.

Now, for those of you who can’t read the underlying sarcasm, I’m going to spell it out for you. I hate, with a passion, when people talk during a performance. Maybe not all of the students who perform have stage fright, but it takes a lot of nerve and guts to stand in front of people.

At “The Voice” I was OK with people singing along with the performers; I was doing it myself, but with a quiet voice. If you wanted to sing that loudly, why didn’t you audition yourself?

Be respectful to the people performing—I don’t care what they are performing whether it be a song, poem, or acting; sit down, shut up, and give them your full attention. It really isn’t that difficult to do; I promise.

magine someone telling you that you have stage four cancer. Now, take that information, combine it with eight cycles of chemotherapy treatment, and then have someone tell you that you only have two hours to live. Two hours to think back on your life and the regrets you may have. Two hours more of pain and suffering. Two hours; that’s it.

CSC’s Theatre Department’s next play, “Wit,” written

by Margaret Edson, focuses on just that—a 50-year-old woman named Vivian Bearing, trying to deal with the fact that she has stage four ovarian cancer.

With a captivating plot, Bearing, played by Hannah Clark, senior of Littleton, Colorado, tells of her life through a series of flashbacks in the small time frame she’s been given.

Bearing, a 17th-century poetry professor, is strongwilled, has a brilliant mind, and does well at distracting herself from the underlying issue that is her health.

Clarks’ Bearing begins the play by introducing herself to the audience and pulling a drip bag beside her. She explains to the audience how she has terminal cancer and the day she was told she had cancer. As Bearing says a few times throughout the play, she is “learning to suffer.”

Clark’s portrayal of Bearing is spot on as she vocally and physically expresses Bearing’s brilliant mind and love for words, but also the immense, heartbreaking struggle taking her mind and body over.

Her primary doctor, Harvey Kelekian, played by Wacey Gallegos, junior of Ainsworth, tells her they are going to try an eight-cycle treatment that will hopefully reduce the size of the tumor. Without asking further questions, Bearing agrees, and is thrown into a research project as the main subject.

Her second doctor, Jason Posner, played by Nathan Wojciechowski, junior of Gering, is a newbie doctor, who is ultimately smart, but lacks the intelligence to know when to be compassionate, and when to be a researcher. Posner is one of those people you can easily hate because he’s disrespectful and arrogant, which Wojciechowski does well as portraying. Another uncomfortable scene brings in gnettes and flashback sequences. I was tempted to use the cliché of “breaking the fourth Dr. Kelekian’s research fellow, a young doctor wall,” but there aren’t walls. The whole play is named Jason Posner, played by junior Nathan Wojciechowski of Gering. Posner is tasked to give Bearing a pelvic exam, prior to which he divulges that he is a former student of hers.

Posner, like Bearing, is consumed by his research and lacks a compassionate clinical touch, which seems to add another dimension to her suffering.

Monahan seems to be the only person who is interested in Bearing’s wellbeing and final wishes, discussing the heaviest decision she has to make: a do-not-resuscitate order.

person, which he proceeds to do throughout the play.

While in the hospital, Bearing has one visitor who is not a nurse or doctor—her name is E. M. Ashford, Bearing’s former college professor. Ashford, played by Asia Carr, sophomore of Lusk, Wyoming, appeared strict and unbreakable in Bearing’s flashback of her, but as an older woman, Ashford appears fragile, but keeps her composure while visiting Bearing.

The exceptional acting portrayed by every actor helps pull the story together, because without the strong emotional influences each actor adds to the play, “Wit” wouldn’t be what it is now.

This play is enjoyable because it’s not just a normal tale of a person dying from cancer lying in a hospital bed.

The number of flashbacks and intense moments gives this story the meat it needed to be the great masterpiece Edson has created.

The play takes place in Memorial Hall’s Black Box, which I thought was the best place for a play such as this.

In the Black Box, the audience can capture the play from all angles instead of just one like they would have to in the auditorium.

I don’t think there would be such a strong emotional effect if the play were performed in the auditorium, because the space is more personal and the audience is sitting right there in the action.

Here are some things to remember when going to see “Wit.” First: This isn’t a happy play with singing and laughter scattered about the dialogue and actions. It’s a somber play with some dark, blunt humor tossed into the mix of embarrassing moments, painful-to-watch scenes, and depressing ending.

Second: If you don’t already know the feeling, it’s incredibly difficult to watch a person crumble from a disease, and Clark does a wonderful job at conveying her character’s struggle to the audience.

Finally: It’s OK to cry. No one will judge you if you let a few [or a lot of ] tears escape.

This play will tug at your heart strings and, as many people say, make you feel the feels. I highly recommend “Wit” to anyone and everyone.

For the team’s 100th season, the Eagles ended 8-3 overall and 7-2 RMAC. CSC flew over the Fort Lewis Skyhawks 1816 Saturday.

Jonn McLain, senior quarterback of Chadron, now holds every school passing record.

Saturday he completed 24 of 32 for 300 yards and three touchdowns. For his career, McLain completed 934 of 1,456 passes for 10,115 yards, and 94 touchdowns.

Rushing for 91 yards and a touchdown, tailback Michael Madkins, senior of Sacramento, California, led the Eagle rushers. Tailbacks Derek Jackson, redshirt freshman of Pueblo West, Colorado, marked 12 yards on the ground and sophomore Cody Paul, of Seal Beach, California, tallied six.

Leading the receivers, Kyle Vinich, junior of Casper, Wyoming, snagged eight for 133 yards and two TDs. Receiver Danny O’Boyle, junior of Gering, grabbed four for 85 yards and a TD, and Ethan Bauer, senior of Morse Bluff, gained 42 yards on five receptions.

All together the Eagle’s defense counted 100 tackles. Five

Dylan Furrier, junior of Tucson, Arizona, led the Eagle tacklers with 14; Isaac Holscher, senior of Scottsbluff, marked 12; and Cole Montgomery, junior of Casper, Wyoming, took down 11. Montgomery also intercepted the Skyhawks once and broke up three other passes.

“I’m glad to finish the season on a high note,” Center Sam Parker, senior of Harrison, said.

Fifteen players were named to RMAC All-Conference teams.

Mike Lorenzo, senior offensive linesman of Oak Park, California; Parker; Ryan Wood, sophomore defensive back of Stockton, California; and Paul were named to the First Team.

Madkins; Zach Sandstrom, senior defensive lineman of Chadron; Furrier; and Lane Haller, senior safety of Gordon; were named to the Second Team.

Honorable mentions include McLain; Vinich; O’Boyle; Bauer; Holscher; Montgomery; and Randy Wentz, sophomore kicker of Scottsbluff.

Coaches from the conference schools vote for first and second team players at each position. They are not allowed to vote for their own players.

To earn an honorable mention, players are required to receive at least one First Team or two Second Team votes.

Women lose first home game, 78-52 Angela Cruz Melanie Nelson Reporters The CSC women’s basketball team lost its season-opener against Augustana College Friday in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, 85-59.

“Our team did really well for our first game together with so many new players,” freshman forward Maka Daysh, of Tauranga, New Zealand, said. “A few players definitely connected and will have awesome chemistry by the end of the season.”

Daysh led the Chadron team making all five of her field goal attempts and five of her six free throw shots for 15 points. Guard Havannah Newens, sophomore of Mitchell, made four of six attempts from behind the 3-point line and one 2-pointer, earning a career-high of 14 points.

“We showed bright spots on offense and defense,” Newens said.

“I think using our athleticism and depth will help us improve going forward. We have many talented players and it will be important for us to utilize that depth.”

Sophomore forward Maddie Metzger, of Georgetown, Texas, canned three of five field goals and grabbed a total of seven rebounds.

“I think that, overall, it was a good learning experience,” Metzger said.

“We definitely had our ‘first game jitters.’ We had moments where we really came together as a team and looked solid. We have so much talent and I can’t wait to see what we’ll look like once we really come together as a team.”

The Eagles averaged 39.6 percent of their field goals; 38.5 percent of their 3-pointers; and 80 percent of their free throws.

“Our team is really focusing on boxing out and our rebounding game. The other team was very big and long but our guards did well to keep them off the boards,” Daysh

said. “Our team is just planning on improving our overall communication as that’s the key to winning games. We have a very talented team and once we can put them all together, it will be exciting for Eagle fans.”

The CSC women’s basketball team fell to Montana State University—Billings in the women’s home season opener Tuesday in the new Chicoine Events Center.

The Eagles played competitively, but were slipping to MSU after each possession. At the end of the first half, they were trailing 20-39. CSC was unable to catch the Yellowjackets and lost the game 78-52.

MSU’s Quinn Peoples, senior of Butte, Montana, and Alisha Breen, sophomore of Choteau, Montana, both forwards, were the Yellowjackets’ lead scorers. Peoples marked a double-double of 19 points and 10 rebounds, while Breen snagged 19 points, nine rebounds, three steals and two blocks. Forward Kayleen Goggins, senior of Shepherd, Montana, added 18 points and three steals. All together MSU hit 43.3 percent from the field, 64.5 percent from the foul line, and out-rebounded the Eagles 48 to 33.

CSC’s Kate Simonton, senior guard of Bakersfield, California, hit five of nine shots, including two 3-pointers, to lead the Eagles with 12 points and three assists. Hattie Guzman of Scottsbluff, and Stephanie Knowles of Colorado Springs, Colorado, both junior guards, nailed seven points each, as well as Kayla Mathews, freshman point guard of Adelaide, South Australia. Knowles added six rebounds and three blocks for the Eagles. Chadron State shot 36.4 percent from the field and made 40 percent of free throws.

“We have a lot of new faces this year and a lot of talent,” Newens said.

“We are extremely athletic and I feel like we can outrun other teams.”

Men win first game in Chicoine Ashley Swanson Managing Editor With a difference of 12 points, the men’s basketball team won its first home game against Presentation College Friday, 71-59.

Forward Kendrick Holliman, senior of Spanish Fort, Alabama, made the first three points for CSC, followed by a 2-pointer by guard Chris Smith, senior of Pasadena, California. Holliman added 19 points to the scoreboard, eight of which were made in the first half; Smith added 22 points. Presentation did not make any points until four minutes into the game.

“I think we did pretty well,” Smith said. “We did good on defense, now we just need to carry it over to the next game.”

In the first half, CSC made 43.33 percent of its 2-pointers; 25 percent of its 3-pointers; and 40 percent of its free throws. CSC stayed ahead of Presentation for the entire first half, ending 34-20.

In the second half, CSC continued to lead, making 44.44 percent of their 2-pointers; 55.56 percent of their 3-pointers; and 57.14 percent of their free throws.

The men will be back at the Chicoine Events Center at 7 p.m., Friday against University of Nebraska-Kearney.

Track teams to host intersquad dual Christopher Smith Reporter Chadron State men’s and women’s track teams are hosting a cops-and-robbers themed intersquad dual Friday.

The track and field team routinely hosts an intersquad dual a few weeks before the season kicks into gear to test athletes in a fun, live competition.

“It’s a good time for fans to come see who is competing for the track and field team,” Brian Medigovich, assistant track coach, said.

This dual also decides some runner’s fate as A team runners and B team runners, so it should be a competitive night for all runners and fans.

Coaches are working for the men’s and women’s teams to compete at a national level, hoping this season they can compete as one of the top three teams for the conference, but understand that goals will smooth out as the season plays out. Coaching staff also said they hope for multiple men and women to

compete in National Meets this year.

“We have quite a few players to look out for this season,” Medigovich said.

Coaches said they are expecting senior Hunter Dittbenner, of Mitchell, and sophomore Chris Cutcher, of Colorado Springs, Colorado, to lead the way for the men’s team.

Dittbenner was a RMAC hepthathlon champion last season, and Cutcher was one of the top hurdlers.

The Eagle’s women have a few weapons of their own that they plan to put to the test.

Sophomore Kelsey Wood, of Hemingford, and junior Shelby Bozner, of Rock Springs, Wyoming, are returning after strong showings last year.

Coaches are also preparing for the cross country team to compete in the South Regional Championships this weekend. Medigovich will travel with the cross country team, and later coach Brad Gamble will meet up with the team, but he will stay back and help coordinate the cops and robbers event.

The Intersquad dual will be hosted at the Nelson Physical Activity Center at 2 p.m., Friday.

Saturday, the Eagle wrestling team did not compete in the Dakota Wesleyan Open Tournament, in Mitchell, South Dakota.

They did not travel because the roads were too bad and there were several wrestlers who were hurt and sick, Head Wrestling Coach Brett Hunter said.

This coming Saturday the Eagles will travel to Kearney to compete in the Nebraska-Kearney Holiday Inn Open.

According to Hunter, Chadron State is taking 24 guys to the tournament, and University of Nebraska-Kearney is hosting 32 teams at the tournament. Hunter also stated that this will be a very tough tournament.

Students gather to support The Voice contestants Brittany Province Reporter Last semester’s runner up for The Voice came out on top Thursday when he won over the judges with his voice and charisma on the stage.

The judging panel consisted of TRIO Specialist Lisa Curtis; CSC student Frederick Culp, winner of last semester’s The Voice; HPER assistant professor Dawn Brammer; and Assistant Music Professor Sidney Shuler.

The room was filled with about 300 students who came to show support for all the contestants. The audience even joined in and helped one of the contestants sing “Don’t Stop Believing.” The crowd also had the chance to join in on the competition.

While the judges were deliberating, the host chose three audience members to go onto the stage and lip sing “Holla Back Girl” by Gwen Stefani.

Each contestant had 90 seconds to sing his/her song selection to the judges, who at first had to be facing the crowd; this is a blind audition and is based solely on the sound of the contestant’s voice.

Zachary Henderson, 21, senior of Doug-

FIRST CLASS

las, Wyoming, won The Voice competition that was hosted by The Pit, and won a bid to try out for the TV show “The Voice.” Henderson competed against 10 other people in the first round of the competition and made it to the top four, which was the last round to impress the judges.

Henderson had his first vocal solo when he was only three years old. He sang frequently in church, and majors in music education.

“I’ve done a few singing competitions in my life,” Henderson said. “ I competed in The Voice last year, and got second, and I’ve done all sorts of random talent shows over the years.”

When asked how he chose his song selections for the night, Henderson responded with: “I periodically scroll through my Spotify playlist and sing along, if I find that my voice fits a certain song, then I download a backing track and try it out. Most of the time, I have to sing songs that are sung by women just to get it in a range that I can sing, but for The Voice I wanted to do songs by males too, but my choices were limited.”

Henderson’s audition won’t be until February, when he will travel to Chicago for an untelevised audition.

“Maybe she just needs prescription eyes? .... I mean, glasses.”

Students experience eating a sense short Uyen Han Reporter Walking in a room with all the lights off, windows and doors covered in black, the guests were required to take an eye mask, sit down at a table, put the eye mask on, and the journey to Dining in the Dark began.

Sponsored by RLA, Dining in the Dark took place in the Gold Room from 8-10 p.m., Wednesday. The students were served with salad, ravioli, and cookies, without being able

to use sight. Then they had to guess the soda they were served.

“It’s fun, different, yum, and hilarious,” Chelsea Lukasiewicz, 19, sophomore of Fort Calhoun, said.

The main purpose of Dining in the Dark is to use other senses while enjoying the meal.

This was the first time RLA held this kind of event on campus, and the students were excited to try the new experience. But without using sight, they struggled more than they thought.

“I lost my fork like five times,” a student

said while eating.

“Yeah, the struggle is real,” another said.

Without using sight, other senses became more sensitive, and everything except sight became more significant. The flavor of the dressing became stronger. People could feel the texture of the salad, smell the ravioli from far away, and feel the bread skin with their fingers. It was hard to eat at the beginning, but the students got used to it and said they enjoyed the dining experience.

Without the eyes, our ears became the dominant sense. People could hear the sound

of someone coming, the sound of someone writing on a paper, or the conversation from the other side of the room. The Gold Room became a dining room where tables were not the boundaries between the groups.

People from different tables talked to each other as they shared the same experience, the same struggle, and the same enjoyment—a sight that we don’t usually see in the Dining Hall. The social event was a success as all the students responded positively and hoped that RLA events could be advertised more so more students could participate.

Husker viewing party attracts students, fans Kyle Tarbutton Reporter

Twenty-one people attended the Husker viewing party Saturday in Edna Hall. The Huskers faced off against Wisconsin in a Big Ten western division match-up. The half foot of snow in Chadron limited the number of participants considerably, so it was mainly students from Edna Hall that participated.

“I was really pleased the party was in Edna,” sophomore Bethany Bergstrom, 20, of Axtell, said. “I don’t have a T.V. in my room so I wouldn’t have seen the game without this event.”

Nebraska started off the first drive of the game with a field goal. After a close call because of a near fumble, the Huskers rebounded on their second drive with a touchdown. The Wisconsin Badger’s next possession, they broke free for two plays of 20 or more yards which culminated in a field goal.

A fumble recovery a few possessions later swung momentum back in the Huskers favor, much to the delight of the crowd in Edna. A hard fought drive by the Huskers resulted in a scamper in the end zone by quarterback Tommy Armstrong.

“For my money, Tommy Armstrong deserves the Heisman,” sophomore Ian

Ahrens, 20, of Palmer, Alaska, said. “His throwing arm is second to none and his ability to run the football makes him an impressive dual threat.”

Wisconsin responded quickly with a touchdown of their own just a couple minutes later, and wound up scoring the final 49 points of the game. The final score of the game was 59-24. The star was senior running back Melvin Gordon of Wisconsin, who broke the collegiate record for running yards in a game. The last player who broke the record for rushing yards in a game was LaDainian Tomlinson, who was a pro bowl selection six times in his 11 year NFL career. According to Tomlinson’s personal website, he holds the NFL records for most seasons with 17+ rushing touchdowns and he rushed for 15,000 yards in fewer games than any other player in history, along with a plethora of other accolades. So while the result of the game was disappointing, at least the Huskers fell to a worthy opponent.

“I thought that it (the Husker viewing party) was put together really well and there were more people there than I thought there would be,” sophomore Garret Dockweiler, 20, of Oconto, said.

“I liked how there was homemade food because that is how my family usually watches the games. Unfortunately, the game was really bad and put a damper on a well-done football party.”

Roc your Mocs provides insight into Native American culture for CSC students Maria Evtodieva Reporter CSC students crafted moccasins by Native American art on the Roc Your Mocs event Friday in the Gold Room.

RLA and the Diversity Committee organized the program where students could show their handmade skills.

In a homely atmosphere with the movie “The Incredibles” on TV, students created their moccasins while snacking on chips, croutons and drinking soda. Tendy Leather Company provided supplies for the event.

Students learned a three-step process Native Americans use to fashion moccasins. They traced their feet on the brown paper and cut the contour out. The second step is to put the trace

on the leather, to draw the contour on it, and cut it out. The third step, they used needles to connect all pieces together with thick threads.

Organizers helped the participants and paid attention to them during the entire process.

Students said it looked easier than it was.

“I think I can count it as a project for my class,” Que’Nita Greene, 20, senior of Corning, New York, said.

Among the tools, participants used hammers and nails when they made holes to pass threads through the leather. The process of moccasins’ producing looked serious not easy entertainment. It was the first experience for students.

“We are experimenting with them, working with flow,” Lane Swedberg, 21, senior of North Platte, said.

Swedberg made a research about the conse-

cution of the manufacture.

“I wanted to make it informational and make it fun,” Swedberg said. “Diversity Community had extra money, they thought it would be cool.”

Swedberg told students a history of moccasins and that moccasins can be spelled different ways and have two forms, soft and hard.

Jennifer Schaer, representative of the Diversity Committee and director of Project Strive/ Trio, came up with the idea in the spring. The Diversity Committee was assigned by the president to provide programs to promote student and teacher awareness of different cultures.

“I used to work on the reservation at Crazy Horse School in Wanblee and at Red Cloud Indian School,” Schaer said. “They are both located on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota.

‘Lone Survivor’ inspires perseverance Preston Goehring Distribution Manager

If you are anything like me, you might think that releasing a movie on Christmas isn’t the smartest thing you can do. I’ve never thought about going to the movies with a group of friends on Christmas day. However, if the movie is anything like “Lone Survivor,” I’ll do it over and over again. Peter Berg, the director, doesn’t disappoint in this action-packed, dramatic story of perseverance.

Released Dec. 25, 2013, “Lone Survivor” quickly became a must see. Based on a true story, the film follows four Navy SEALs. The team of elite warriors goes on a mission to capture and eliminate a Taliban leader. They find themselves in extreme terrain with little to no communication with their superiors.

Just as they settle in on a ridge above a small village hosting the enemy, a group of sheep herders stumble upon them. The team is faced with a decision, eliminate the compromise, or let them go, knowing that they are going to tell the enemy where they are. Live with the fact that they murdered unarmed people, or risk their own lives by letting them go. After making the morally correct decision, they find themselves quickly outgunned and outmanned.

As you are watching, you start to think there is no way any man could ever make it out alive. The SEALs keep repeating the same phrase, “You are never out of the fight.” After being shot at by hundreds of Taliban soldiers, ran off a cliff, and at the top of unfamiliar terrain, the thought of giving up is never raised. With only one way to call for support, Lieutenant Michael Murphy, played by Taylor Kitsch, does one of the most courageous, selfless things anyone has

ever seen. Completely exposed, he climbs to the top of a peak to radio in air support. Shot several times, Murphy died on that peak. With only one survivor left, Marcus Luttrell, played by Mark Wahlberg, has to find a way to get out.

Saved by a friendly Afghan, he finds himself in another gun fight, in a village of untrained men.

Whether it was fate, a miracle, or a little of both, Luttrell reseives help.

Why? Because he was never out of the fight. The film shows how mentally tough our military members are and what they are willing to do to save this country. Just like other movies from the director, it does its job of making grown men want to cry. As a man who rarely sheds a tear, especially at a movie, I found myself an emotional wreck.

Although these men went through tremendous things that can’t be compared to anything, the message the film sends can be applied to multiple situations. As

college students, we find ourselves constantly stressed about homework, tests, and the awkward moments with a secret crush. With finals week quickly approaching, remember one thing: You are never out of the fight. Never give up, and if you put your mind to something, it is possible.

Jazz Band entertains small crowd Brittany Province Reporter

The soulful music of the CSC Jazz Band flowed through the Student Center at 7:30 p.m., Friday. Dr. Michael Stephens, director, and music associate professor, told the audience how happy he was to see how many people came to the event. Three semesters prior to that he mentioned there was only a presence of five people, and that night the Jazz Band played for 60 people.

Hearing the music almost made you think of those old black and white movies filmed in New York City, in the little bars, where everyone was

dressed to the nines. Their musical selections were picked from the classics of the swing era ranging from Frank Foster, “Shiny Stockings,” to Alfred James Ellis, “The Chicken.”

Drew Kasch, 21, junior of Highlands Ranch, Colorado, has been a part of the Jazz Band for three years playing the alto sax, and also has been in the “Jazz Birds” for two and half years playing the tenor.

“I have liked jazz music since I was a little kid and have been playing it since middle school,” Kasch said. “Throughout my school years, jazz band has been the one constant and I wanted to continue at CSC.” The next upcoming event for the music department will be at 7:30 p.m.,Tuesday, Dec. 2 in Memorial Hall Auditorium.

Flute recital whistles through Sandoz Center Angela Cruz Reporter

A flute’s light and airy sound floated through the Sandoz Center Chicoine Atrium 3 p.m., Saturday, during a recital performed by CSC adjunct instructor Lauren Stephens and the CSC Flute Ensemble, presented by the Chadron State College Department of Music.

Stephens led the recital with four songs that alternated between light and twittering, and slow and drawn out. She executed two songs in duet with pianist Brooks Hafey, one song solo, and one song with guitarist Ryan Head.

Stephens said she had picked three of her songs over the summer. They were songs that she learned a long time ago and was itching to play again, she said. However, she was convinced to play the song “Histoire Du Tango” by Head.

She said the song was “one of my favorites” and described it as “dancing in your seat” fun.

Head got the audience’s attention when he started the song by slapping his guitar like a drum.

Stephens wasn’t the only one to take

the stage that afternoon. Sophia Zhang, 20, sophomore of Taiyuan, China, performed a duet with Hafey before intermission.

“We grew,” Stephens said, after intermission when she was joined by the CSC Flute Ensemble. “My dad said the more flutes the better and I agree.”

The ensemble included Zhang; Molly O’Connell, 19, sophomore of St. Onge, South Dakota; Megan Anderson, 19, freshman of Hill City, South Dakota; and Elspeth Moon, 19, freshman of Gordon.

They performed four songs together including “Giga,” “Sheep May Safely Graze,” “Menuetto,” and “Mississippi Rag.” Stephens said they chose those songs because of their ability to reach out to the audience without being too long.

Lauren Stephens has been playing the flute since age 10, a time when she was trying to imitate her older sister who has since given up the instrument. She has spent seven years at CSC as an adjunct instructor, teaching flute. She also has taught music at middle and high school levels in Nebraska and Ohio. Stephens keeps an active concert schedule and frequently performs as a guest with a multiple CSC groups.

The recital was free and open to the public.

Comedian Rex Havens, as part of the Galaxy Series Thursday, tells jokes to an audience in Memorial Hall.

Rex Havens humors audience Uyen Han Reporter

The fourth and last Galaxy Series installment of this semester ended on a high note with the performance of comedian Rex Havens in Memorial Hall Auditorium Thursday, attracting many people from the community and CSC students.

For more than 20 years, Havens has entertained and educated audiences around the world (50 states, 15 countries and counting) with his astute observations about the hilarious miscommunications that populate our personal lives. Titled “Everything I Needed to Know, I Learned from My Wife,” the show dealt with women, men, marriage and situations we encounter in daily life.

Based on the only two truths Havens has learned about men and women—“I’m a man… and I’m sorry,” his comedy routine was a fresh approach to the ageless subject. He applied his own gentle combination of logic and insanity, and offered it back to his audience in a way that was engaging, thoughtful, and hilarious. With his smart and sarcastic interpretation, every thing that seems trivial could become uproarious.

“I always believe that laughter is the best defense

against the confusing and challenging world,” he said.

In a relaxed atmosphere, Havens brought laughter to the audience from the first moment he took the stage until the very last moment of the show. The show was not only for entertainment, but also for reminding us that family is one of the most important things in our lives.

“The key to a successful marriage is communication. The experts say it so often it has become trite, but it’s nonetheless true,” he said, “and remember ladies and gentlemen, love doesn’t last forever, so treasure the person that might share the love with you ‘till the end of your life.”

The talk about Havens could not be completed without mentioning his uncommon turn from a lawyer and college professor to a comedian more than 20 years ago. He was a lawyer for 14 years and a professor for 12 years while doing part-time comedy at night for seven years, before becoming a full-time comedian. It was not an easy decision, but with the support from his wife and family, he was able to accomplish his dream.

“I think whenever people change their career for any reason, they will see that the world is a lot bigger than they might have thought. They would be able to get out of their circle, and see that there are many more circles outside their comfort zone,” he said during the dinner before the show.

CSC students catch the Native Spirit Melanie Nelson Reporter CSC students got in the spirit of Native American Heritage month by making dream catchers 6-8 p.m., Thursday in the Gold Room.

George H. W. Bush officially made November Native American Heritage month in 1990, to recognize the first Americans and their contributions.

Andrews RA Brittnie Wedel, 20, junior of Omaha, used a $130 RLA budget to buy craft supplies and Indian pudding ingredients, which she made herself to serve as

a refreshment. Wedel hosted the event to share her knowledge on Native American culture with fellow students. Wedel said she likes learning about other cultures, and used Pinterest to find dream catcher directions.

“Dream catchers are a part of popular culture, so I researched them so I could teach others where they come from,” Wedel said.

Twenty-five students signed in to try their hand at the craft.

Jade Capezzuto, 20, junior of Colorado Springs, Colorado, said, “I think this was a really fun idea to tie in with Native American Heritage month.”
