The CSC Athletic Department will host an open house for the Chicoine Events Center from 5:30-7 p.m., Monday. This will give fans and students a chance to check out the new arena. There will also be a dunk contest, 3-point men's and women's basketball, and intersquad scrimmages. Students will also be able to try making a half-court shot. One male and female will be able to win second semester books.

Great Plains Communication will be taking the cable television down at about 8:30 a.m., today until the end of the day.

An Election Watch Party, hosted by the College Republicans Club, was open to the public Tuesday in the Student Center lobby, giving students a chance to observe the election results despite their political affiliation, Jacob Rissler, Republicans Club president, said.

An abundance of food—wings, mini sandwiches, and a fruit and cheese platter—and drinks were available for participants.

Prizes were given out every hour through a drawing to students present at the event.

Some of the prizes included a 39-inch television; two seven-inch tablets; aviators with the American flag printed on the front of them; T-shirts; and a few American flag iPhone cases.

A poll taken at the watch party asking the question, “Who do you want elected into office as Nebraska’s governor: Pete Ricketts or Chuck Hassebrook?” tallied 19 votes for Ricketts and four for Hassebrook.

Results for the Dawes County Election were tallied by 12:30 a.m., Wednesday detailing elected officials for city council slots, sheriff positions, Crawford’s mayor, pool issues, and minimum wage increases.

Two of the three candidates elected for Chadron’s city council were write-in candidates John Coates and Miles Bannan. As write-in candidates, voters would have to write the candidates name on the ballot instead of checking a box like other candidates.

With write-in candidates there is always that thought if the voters understand the write-in process, but obviously they did, Coates said.

“People of Chadron clearly voted

for a change in direction of the city council,” he said. “I’m pleased with the results and look forward to serving on the city council.

Bannan was not surprised with the results.

“We worked really hard,” he said.

He and Coates focused on campaigning, having meetings throughout town discussing their goals, and went door-to-door, Bannan said. He also thanked their supporters who helped with their campaigning and posting “Team Chadron” signs in their yards.

He also said he was grateful for the CSC students for voting no matter who they voted for.

“I’m so grateful for the voters who took the time to write in their [Bannan and Coates] names,” Bannan said.

Voters also approved the half-cent

sales tax increase to help fund the pool project with 916 “yes,” and 512 “no,” votes. John Parton, citizen advocate for pool enhancement said he was “more than happy with Chadron’s vote to enact the sales tax in order to pay for enhancing the pool. The margin shows a strong wish on the part of the community to invest in its own growth.”

This year, 5,984 people were registered to vote in Dawes County and 2,744 ballots were counted, meaning there was a 46 percent turnout—a large number compared to previous years where elections only had 24-26 percent turnouts.

“I also take the pool vote as a recognition of the value citizens place on the awe-inspiring work of the S.P.E.E.D.O. Committee."

Senate allocates $4,400 for student health magazine Ashley Swanson Managing Editor Senate unanimously approved $4,400 for the Student Health 101 Magazine, which is made available to students through their emails, and gives them information on different types of health issues.

Pat Beu, senior director of student affairs, said the magazine could give students information on drug abuse, mental illnesses, learning disabilities, suicidal behaviors, sexual abuse, and alcohol abuse.

Many of the senators said they supported the magazine and suggested CSC try the magazine for a year, and see how many students use it. If there is a high number of students using it, then CSC should continue using it, but if there isn’t, then CSC doesn’t have to move forward with another year.

Other senators questioned subscribing to the online magazine

because students said they would not read it. Senate Adviser Susan Schaffer said Senate doesn’t know if students are not going to read the magazine. Although they say they won’t now, there’s nothing saying they won’t change their mind later; however, they can’t read something that is not available.

“Everyone in the room could probably think of someone who could benefit from this information presented to them,” Beu said.

Senate also unanimously approved to submit a letter of support to Wayne State College’s proposal of a policy change to Nebraska State College System’s Board policies 2700 and 5000.

The policies state “the Nebraska State Colleges are equal opportunity institutions and do not discriminate against any student, employee or applicant on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, disability, religion, or age in employment and education opportunities…”

Wayne State’s proposal is to add “sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression to…” the policies.

Senator of Andrews Marci Luton said there have been issues of clothing theft in Andrews laundry rooms. Security cameras are going to be looked at, she said.

Michael Hall, senator of High Rise, said students have been having issues with connecting the computers to the printers in High Rise. It was suggested to take the issue to the IT Department, so that they are aware of the problem.

CAB Chair Kelsey Empfield said CAB representatives voted to approve a change to the bylaws where it states the executive positions.

Senate approved of the change.

Student Trustee Jacob Rissler said there is a Nebraska State College’s Board Meeting today and tomorrow, and if students have anything they want him to bring up to the board to let him know.

Empfield announced that since Senate approved the changes to their bylaws, there was another position open for interested CAB representatives.

Four representatives were nominated for the Vice Chair of Relations, a position which will deal mainly with the social media aspects of CAB and will maintain relations between clubs, the college, and the community. Voting will take place at Tuesday’s meeting.

Free bowling night will be Nov. 15, and free movie night will be Nov. 16, Vice Chair of Programming Andy Martin said.

Vice Chair of Finances Kelley McNabb said three CAB representatives need to be chosen for next year’s Activity Fee Board Committee.

The committee meets with clubs each spring for the annual budget hearings, which is a time when clubs may submit a budget packet are detailing funding they need for the up-

coming academic year.

Those interested may contact McNabb. Along with three CAB representatives, there will also be three Senate members, and three at-large students from the student body chosen to be a part of the committee.

McNabb said there is $6,530 in unallocated funds.

Vice Chair of Records Stephanie Steele said if anyone is interested in being a part of the Hunger Games or Quidditch Committees to talk to her.

CAB Adviser Laure Sinn said November is Native American Month and Don Renlow, former CSC art professor, will have a display in Memorial Hall and in the Student Center. There will also be a pipe making speaker demonstrating how a peace pipe is made and what they are used for.

Blue Key will be doing a canned food drive during the first men’s basketball game Nov. 14.

Child welfare conference comes to Chadron State Teri Robinson Photo Editor

Social Work 435 class hosted the Child Welfare Conference yesterday in the Student Center to fulfill their capstone requirement.

The class started planning in January for the project and had help from the court system and others to make contact with speakers, according to Felicia Cummings, 22, senior of Casper, Wyoming.

The conference hosted 13 speakers on topics such as child advocacy and forensic interview, Internet sex crimes against children, and mental health of children, to name a few.

Beginning at 8 a.m., Wednesday, the program lasted until 4:30 p.m. There were four breakout sessions

throughout the day, breaks and vendors, lunch, a panel of speakers, and a closing.

Speakers included Judge Susan Bazis of Omaha, Judge James Worden of Scottsbluff, Shannon Black of Lincoln, Julie Hamberger, Box Butte County probation officer of Alliance, and Caroline Winchester, Chadron Public Schools superintendent, and others.

Chadron State students, faculty, community members, and members of the surrounding area filled the Student Center to listen to speakers. Vendors were available in the hallway outside of the cafeteria during breaks.

Every year the class puts on a different capstone project; last year was a Post traumatic Stress Disorder capstone. Each capstone is worked on for two semesters to plan and arrange for speakers.

A SCAM we can all get behind Spike Jordan Opinion Editor No-shave November is finally upon us, so it’s the perfect time for me to introduce the newest campus organization: the Society of Collegiate and Academic Mustaches, or SCAM for short. The aim of the SCAM is to give the student body the leadership skills that they will need to succeed outside of college.

Now, I’m sure many students and administrators will be hesitant to let a SCAM operate on campus, but let me assuage your fears; this is a SCAM that we can all get behind.

First off, the SCAM is Title IX compliant; you don’t have to be a man to take part in our SCAM. Our membership is open to the entire student body, and even if you can’t grow facial hair, you can still benefit from all that SCAM has to offer.

Secondly, SCAM provides students the opportunity to develop and demonstrate their leadership abilities through debate and problem solving at hour-long meetings every Monday evening. SCAM discussions center on real world subjects, like T-shirt purchases and how to silence nosy newspaper reporters.

SCAM also endorses the most innovative and cost-effective trends in higher education, like Open Education Resources, or OER. Our SCAM OER has been designed to fit into an awardwinning system known as the Proprietary Information Platform for Education Development, Research Excellence, and Academic Merit (PIPEDREAM.) For a negligible institutional licensing fee, the OER PIPEDREAM gives educators at CSC the opportunity to share their time, talents, and tireless work in a royalty-free environment.

We actively encourage faculty to contribute to this program because, at SCAM, we firmly believe that you can’t put a price on your work. Despite our lack of accreditation, students will have free access to the OER PIPEDREAM’s massive library of mustache and facial-hair related openonline coursework. The future is now!

The next step for the SCAM will be gaining access to student activity fees. We intend to appeal for these funds in order to send our executive board and a faculty adviser to the OER PIPEDREAM seminar in Park City, Utah. This year’s conference will be presented by the Bureau of Universities for Lifelong Learning’s Society for Holistic Integration of Technology, or BULL-SHIT. The BULL-SHIT conference will cost approximately $18,500, but after glancing at the pamphlet they mailed

to us and 15-minutes of extra research, we’re convinced that it’s a small price to pay for the esteemed BULL-SHIT accreditation. We feel this will benefit the entire student body.

We have heard complaints that the SCAM’s executive board is a privileged group who feel that they are somehow entitled to go on this trip, but we simply want to say that this is untrue. They deserve it.

While it is true that two of our executives already attended this conference last year, they didn’t learn anything so we need to send them again. Never mind that one is a graduate student and the other is a senior who will be graduating in May; you simply can’t quantify or qualify the benefits of providing them another opportunity to develop their leadership and network on the student dime.

Now it’s reasonable that some students and faculty might object to money going toward an OER PIPEDREAM or a BULL-SHIT conference, but any and all nay-sayers should be silenced and reminded of the benefits. We won’t tell you what those benefits actually are, but we will remind you: The SCAM will benefit all students, and spending your money on BULL-SHIT will make this campus better.

I read an article in The Eagle last week that suggested senate wanted to spend some $4500 on an email subscription to a health magazine in an effort to curb alcohol abuse.

Are you kidding me??? This reminds me of the DARE program we went through in sixth grade, which I would say worked. The only problem here is we aren’t in sixth grade anymore. A magazine full of facts and statistics about why drinking is bad is certainly not going to stop college students from drinking.

I think one of the biggest problems for college students is that in extreme cases of alcohol intoxication, students are afraid to go to the hospital because as soon as they do they get slapped with an MIP. Maybe rather than trying to scare underage students from drinking or overload us with information the school should focus on making it a safer environment.

A designated driving service where kids aren’t going to be given an MIP for utilizing would also be nice, because let’s be honest, nobody is going to call the police for a ride home from a party.

I really would encourage Jon Lordino and student senate to spend their money elsewhere because this is not going to work.

Head to Head: Dying with dignity Teri Robinson

If you haven’t heard about the Death with Dignity Act in Oregon, you may have heard about Brittany Maynard; a 29-year-old who was diagnosed with stage four glioblastoma brain cancer, and was told she had six months to live. Maynard dealt with seizures, headaches, loss of balance and even became forgetful of her husband’s name, so she decided to end her life with as much health as she could keep.

Maynard did not plan on ending her life after she found out about her prognosis.

Instead she made sure to keep her family, friends, and loved ones close and tell them how much they meant to her; she fulfilled experiences she wanted to check off her bucket list before she died. It wasn’t until after a severe seizure that Maynard decided it was time for her to use the Death with Dignity Act in Oregon. She took a lethal dose of doctor-prescribed sedatives and respiratory-system depressants that ended her suffering Saturday.

Supporters have said they are glad she is no longer suffering and free of the pain from the disease, and others who believe she should not have been allowed to take her own life and believe that the doctor involved helped “murder” her. However, the Death with Dignity Act in Oregon states that terminally-ill Oregonians can “end their lives through the voluntary self-administration of lethal medications, expressly prescribed by a physician for that purpose.”

Whether you believe it is right or wrong is your own opinion and you are entitled to that. For me, however, having had a distant cousin, an uncle, and a very close family friend diagnosed with this same type of brain cancer, I know the different ways a person can suffer from it. I was young when my cousin was diagnosed and unfortunately, he did not win the fight against brain cancer. Before he died, he became moody, often angry, and forgetful. Our family friend was diagnosed in summer of 2013 and lost her battle with brain cancer in May. Two weeks after she was diagnosed with brain cancer, so was my uncle, the exact same type of cancer. I followed their progress and stayed in touch with member of their close family to check how they were doing. As my uncle underwent surgery and chemo treatments, my family saw that he was going to fight it with everything he had and he would not give up.

Our family friend, though she did not just give up, eventually accepted that she was going to die and began to make arrangements for after she died.

You might not agree with what I have to say but I need to have my side of this discussion out there. Brittany Maynard killed herself on Saturday. Plain and simple. She killed herself. Don’t gloss that over by saying that she used the Death with Dignity Act or that she peacefully ended her life; she committed suicide. I understand that Maynard was going to suffer through the rest of her life and that it was going to be a difficult situation for both her and her family. But, in my opinion, that is not reason enough to kill yourself.

Furthermore, I am having a hard time accepting this Death with Dignity Act. Maynard killed herself; she committed suicide, and she is being praised for it.

People are calling her brave, courageous, and dignified. I do not and will never believe that killing yourself is a dignified way to go.

In my short 19 years on this earth I have experienced more deaths than I would have liked. And those that I think died with the most dignity were my grandpas.

My paternal grandpa died when I was 9 years old. I do not remember a lot about his disease because I was pretty young, but I do remember that he usually lived 20 miles away from me and I was not able to spend a lot of time with him, but after his disease progressed, I was able to go see him everyday after school at the hospital. Towards the end, and for most of what I remember, my grandpa was not able to communicate with us. His motor skills were limited, and he needed to be taken care of constantly. But he was still here; he was still fighting; you could tell he still wanted to live, and he wanted to make sure his family knew he loved us.

It was obvious just by looking in his eyes that he loved seeing us coming to visit him. We watched him struggle everyday, and I won’t say it was easy when he passed away, but I still would not change things.

I was glad I got to spend the time with my grandpa I did, even if it was only in a hospital room with limited discussions.

The next year after my paternal grandpa died, my maternal grandpa was diagnosis with acute lymphoma cancer. The doctors told him he did not have very long to live, maybe a year. That was in 2005, I was in fifth grade. I can tell you I was able to do a report, interview, and take pictures of my grandpa about his disease for my eighth grade research project. The time that my grandpa was sick was very hard on not only him, but the rest of our family too. He struggled; he lost his mind a couple times; and it was scary. But all those bad times did not even compare to the good times

ease. I worked with her the summer she was diagnosed and have known her since I was a child. I noticed changes such as memory loss, loss of balance, and she would often space out and forget what she was doing.

It also took longer for her diagnosis since the doctors were not sure what to look for at first, as her symptoms could have been many different diagnoses. My uncle was diagnosed shortly after losing his balance and being taken to the hospital. He had surgery and has undergone chemotherapy treatment and medicine to keep the tumors for coming back or growing into cancerous tumors again. So far he has been able to fight it off and all has been well on his check-ups.

After watching first-hand, two very dear people to my heart fight the same battle and only one was able to keep fighting, I can agree with Maynard’s decision to end her suffering. She did not simply roll over and quit one day. She accepted that she was going to eventually die, but wanted to end losing her memory, having seizures, and suffering every day. Maynard was quoted by NBC News; “Not everybody has to agree that it’s the right thing, because they don’t have to do it. And it’s an option that for me has provided a lot of relief, because the way that my brain cancer would take me organically is very terrible.”

People will argue that her decision was wrong and she should have fought through it. I agree with Maynard and fully support her decision to die and remember her loved ones and end the pain before it consumed her completely and she died slowly and painfully. The Death with Dignity Act is only for terminally-ill patients who are not going to survive their illness and is only prescribed when the patient asks for it. This is not an easy decision for anyone and, not being in her shoes, no one can say that she made the wrong or right decision. Brain cancer of any stage is a very malicious disease. Maynard made her decision on the act after living out her dreams she wanted to accomplish before dying. Sometimes people can fight through diseases and win the battle, other times they cannot. This act is in place to help the pain and suffering of terminally-ill patients who have accepted they are going to die and wish to die as much themselves before the disease takes over their body.

we had with my grandpa. My grandpa passed away five years after his diagnosis.

His death, in my opinion, was dignified because he fought, he battled, and he had little wins in the war with cancer.

When writing this article, I thought about a boy from my hometown. His name is Gage, and he has microcephalic osteodysplastic primordial dwarfism type II (MOPD type II), scoliosis, no kneecaps, no elbows, and a gastrostomy button (Gbutton). MOPD is a condition that causes short stature with other skeletal abnormalities and an unusually small head size.

These problems show up before birth, and people with this condition will grow at a slow rate for their entire lives. Scoliosis is having a curved spine. And a G-button is a tube that people can be fed through.

When Gage was born, doctors said he would not live past the age of 5. On Dec. 19, Gage will turn 13-years-old, and is living a life of dignity. I will not say that his life, and the lives of his family are easy, but I can tell you their lives are all better because Gage is a part of it. He has a hard time talking and he does not walk on his own, but I am sure no one in his family would say he is a burden to take care of.

Some people are going to agree with what Maynard did when she killed herself to “save her and her family suffering,” but death is never easy and neither is living.

Life is a struggle and you are supposed to have struggles to make all the good things better. Maybe Maynard did not want her family to have to take care of her, but if she were my family I would think it was more of a lifelong burden on me that she killed herself for me. Even worse than Maynard killing herself, though, is the fact that people are calling her brave, courageous, or dignified. Death is death and when you voluntarily give up without fighting that is not dignified. You may still be yourself and you may have been yourself until the end, but when you call that dignified, it puts those who did fight and who maybe did lose part of themselves, undignified.

And I will always respect and honor those who fought through their struggles and battles more than those who decide to kill themselves. Fighting for life is dignified.

Ashley Swanson Managing Editor Mirrored images of the evening’s players cast across the reflective surface of the yellow floor. The familiar pounding of a ball bouncing against the wood echoes throughout the room.

People crowd into their seats on the bleachers, talking loudly to others they know who are sitting farther down the bench.

Tension is thick in the air; focused faces, with silent lips and furrowed brows check their laces; many players practice moving the ball in their hands; others talk with their coaches or other teammates.

Each team looking one another over as they go through the pre-game motions. The buzzer sounds, players, coaches, and referees take their places with the ball in hand; the whistle breaks the through the air—the game begins.

An image familiar to thousands of students and community members, Armstrong—a two-story, red brick building—is no stranger to hundreds of sports events and graduation ceremonies.

Placed on the southeast outskirts of campus, it is one of many main walkthroughs for students, mainly athletes and coaches, who use the gymnasium and weight room for practice. The building was named after Ross Armstrong, former CSC coach and administrator, and opened in 1964 and cost $600,000.

The volleyball team’s season ender also ended the last game in Armstrong Saturday evening.

Construction on the Chicoine Events Center broke ground in October 2012. Governor Dave Heineman approved the $6.7 million for the center in early April 2012.

Two years later, the new Chicoine Events Center, although not complete, will host the men’s basketball team’s first home game Nov. 14 on its new home court.

The court consists of a bowl-like shape, surrounding the gym floor by rows and rows of bleachers—all accessible from the upper level.

Volleyball team closes out home season William McLaughlin Melanie Nelson Reporters The sixth ranked Colorado School of Mines Orediggers totaled 53 kills with three players scoring in double figures to sweep CSC Friday at Armstrong Gym, 2522, 25-15, 25-19. The Orediggers won their 10th straight while the Eagles dropped their 12th straight.

Middle Blockers Alanna Winfield, sophomore of Houston, Texas, and Megan Peterson, redshirt sophomore of St. Louis, Missouri, led the Orediggers scoring 12.5 points each. Not far behind, Outside Hitter Sarah Pekarek, senior of Plymouth, Minnesota, tailled 12 points. Peterson, the RMAC attack percentage leader going into the weekend, increased her average with a .458 attack percentage Friday to lead the Orediggers. She tallied 12 kills to tie a team lead with Winfield.

The Eagles and Orediggers battled through the end of the first set. There were 16 ties and four lead changes. The biggest lead of the first set was three points. The Orediggers took the set 25-22 and carried

that momentum into the second set.

The Eagles struggled in the second set allowing the Orediggers to score four straight points to start the set before getting on the scoreboard. The Eagles would get within two points early, but a 7-1 Oredigger run would put them up 11-3. The Orediggers were never threatened after that point taking the set 25-15. Defensively, CSC allowed Colorado School of Mines to hit over .200 in all three sets.

Defensive Specialist Alyssa Bauer, senior of Rapid City, South Dakota, led all competitors with 21 digs. Hitting-wise CSC totaled 31 kills, but committed 18 total errors to Mines 14. Outside Hitter Erika Roybal, senior of Denver, led the Eagles with 10 kills; Middle Hitter Lelalelei Nomura, junior of Pago Pago, American Samoa, added seven.

The final set would be similar to the first; there were five lead changes and four ties.

The Eagles lead early 4-3, but the Orediggers would score six straight to go up 9-4 before the Eagles scored again. CSC would only lead one more time at 13-12 before Colorado School of Mines outscored them 13-6 to complete the sweep 25-19.

The Eagles record falls to 3-21 overall

and 2-12 in conference play.

Saturday was the final home volleyball game of the season, and CSC fell to Metro State University of Denver.

Saturday’s match featured Metro State sweeping CSC in three, widening the scoring spread each set.

Chadron clung tight in the first set, even outhitting Metro State .241 to .235, but fell short 27-25.

Metro took an early lead in the second set. However, CSC’s Outside Hitter Alexis Farris, freshman of Blair, almost brought the Eagles back with a five point serving streak, including one ace. Farris also contributed five kills overall. The second set ended 25-17 Metro.

CSC couldn’t seem to find their groove in the third set and were defeated quickly 25-14.

Metro’s Outside Hitter Lauren Quijano, senior of Wildomar, California, marked a match-high 14 kills. Roybal tallied a teamhigh 10 kills. Nomura added eight more.

Football team climbs over Highlands Jordyn Hulinsky Sports Editor The Eagles improve their record to 6-3 overall and 5-2 in the RMAC after winning against New Mexico Highlands Saturday, 52-38. Fiftytwo is the most points CSC has scored in a single game so far this season.

Quarterback Jonn McLain, senior of Chadron, set the school’s all-time record in regular season passing yards with 9,463 yards. He completed 17 of 30 passes for 221 yards and two touchdowns.

Redshirt freshman Derek Jackson, tailback of Pueblo West, Colorado, found his way into the endzone for the first time in his career. He led the Eagle rushers with four touchdowns and 105 yards.

Inside Receiver Zac Bargen, junior of Chadron, also scored the first touchdown of his career this weekend.

The Eagles rushed for 251 yards as a team.

Tailbacks Cody Paul, sophomore of Seal Beach, California, and Michael Madkins, senior of Sacramento, California, rushed for 81 and 78 yards, respectively.

Kyle Vinich, junior wide receiver of Casper, Wyoming, caught six passes for 99 yards, leading the Eagles in receptions. Receivers Danny O’Boyle, junior of Gering, snagged three for 44

yards, and Ethan Bauer, senior of Morse Bluff, grabbed three for 33 yards.

Defensively, Isaac Holscher, senior of Scottsbluff, knocked down 13 tackles. Dylan Furrier, junior of Tucson, Arizona, and Jojo Phillips, senior of San Diego, each tallied 10 tackles.

“Highlands was a good team,” Furrier said.

“And we were happy to get out of Las Vegas with a win.”

The Eagles finish their home season this Saturday against Western New Mexico University, Silver City.

“It’s going to be a memorable game,” Center Sam Parker, senior of Harrison, said. “I’m very thankful that I’ve been able to finish out my career with great teammates and our coaching staff. I’m sure the game will be emotional, but I just want to give it my best like every week.”

Kickoff at Elliott Field is at noon, Saturday.

The game can be heard on the radio at 97.5 and 105.9.

“This is the last game for this great group of seniors,” Furrier said. “And it’s important to them and the rest of the team that we play really well to make it a memorable last home game. This group of seniors really means a lot to the rest of the team and the coaching staff.

We’re excited to play a great game and send the seniors out with a big win at home. It’s the least we could do for all they’ve sacrificed for the program.”

“Metro is one of the best teams in the conference,” Roybal said. “But we kept up with them.”

Being the Eagles last home game, it was senior night. The coaches honored the seniors before the match started, giving them flowers and picture frames.

“It’s sad that that’s the last game I’ll ever play in Armstrong,” Roybal said. “Looking

from page 10 back, I wouldn’t have chosen to go down any path other than Chadron, because this team is like family.”

There are two games left this season, sending the Eagles to Colorado this weekend to take on the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs at 7 p.m., Friday, and Denver to play Regis University at 5 p.m., Saturday.

Basketball team dribbles into new season Ashley Swanson Managing Editor The men’s basketball team will begin a new season Friday against the University of Northern Colorado at Greely. Nine new players will join the team this year, including six freshmen.

“We’re more athletic than we were last year, and I think this group has a chance to be awfully good,” Head Coach Brent Bargen said.

Besides making it to the conference tournament, Bargen also said a major goal for the team is to “maximize our potential individually and as a group.”

Point Guard Josiah Lee, senior of Colo-

rado Springs, Colorado, also commented on the upcoming season.

“I’m just really excited to play my last year and put Chadron on the map for basketball, and I’m happy to do it with the brothers I have with me on this team,” Lee said. “All the extra hours spent in the gym and hard work we’ve done together will hopefully pay off.”

This year, the Eagles have a new home court in the completed Chicoine Events Center adjacent to Armstrong.

“The new court is amazing,” Lee said.

“I can’t wait to see all the fans in the gym cheering us on while we play hard for them.”

“It’s phenomenal,” Bargen said. “It’s second to none. The place fits us perfectly and we are all excited for the new place.”

Wrestlers open season in South Dakota Janelle Kesterson Lifestyles Editor Saturday the Eagle wrestling team will compete at the Wyoming Cowboy Open, Laramie. The tournament begins at 9 a.m.

“We will continue to work hard in the practice room,” Head Coach Brett Hunter said. “We are getting geared up for the Cowboy Open this weekend.”

Sunday the Eagle wrestlers traveled to Brookings, South Dakota, to compete in the Daktronics Open. This tournament was the opener for all 14 teams that wrestled. Many teams competing were Division I. In the 141-pound weight class, Terrance McKinney, sophomore of Spokane, Washington, wrestled five matches, finishing 3-2. He won two matches by decision, and pinned his fourth opponent in 2 minutes and 34 seconds in the first period. He said there are still things he will work on to improve this weekend.

“For the Cowboy Open, I’m working on staying on my opponents for seven minutes and giving them no time to breathe,” McKinney said. “I made a few mistakes that I will

learn from. I’d like to become more focused and be in better control of my weight. “ At 149-pounds, Jacob Anderson, sophomore of Central City, wrestled four matches, going 2-2. He pinned his second opponent, Joe Umlauf, redshirt freshman of Wausau, Wisconsin, from North Dakota State University, Fargo, 47 seconds into the second period.

“I was not pleased with how I wrestled at Daktronics,” Anderson said. “I can approach it differently by being smarter about my weight and focusing on learning during practice.”

Other CSC wrestlers to gain points were Jake Brown, redshirt freshman of Central City, 165-pounds, and Devon Fors, senior of Roseburg, Oregon, 197-pounds.

Brown pinned his Iowa Central Community College opponent 1:27 into the second period.

Fors gained a 3-0 decision over Lane Lettau, redshirt freshman of Pierre, South Dakota, from Augustana College, Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

“I thought our effort and fight was there last weekend at the Daktronics Open and that’s great to see,” said Hunter.

Final fall Graves Lecture pays tribute to Metheny Maria Evtodieva Reporter

That was how audience members described the final fall Grave Lecture, “A Tribute to Pat Metheny,” by CSC music instructor Charles Carey 7 p.m., Tuesday in Memorial Hall, Room 126.

The audience applauded and smiled.

Many participants showed their gratitude to the organizer after the short tribute.

Musicians demonstrated their professional skills and created a friendly and hilarious atmosphere.

The lecture included two parts. The first focused on Metheny’s life; the second was Carey’s and other musicians’ performance of Metheny’s work. The performance group contained Guitarist Carey; Bass Guitarist David Kramer; Drummer Jamin Hübner; Xylophonist Sandy Schaefer; and Pianist James Margetts. They played five of Metheny’s jazz releases, “April Joy,” “Third Wind,” “Follow me,” “Question and Answer,” and “To the End of the World.”

“He is my hero,” Carey said.

Carey met Metheny a couple of times, but they never had dinner together, which Carey said he lamented.

However, Carey recorded an album with

Metheny’s former drummer.

“He is the only jazz man who made more money than Michael Jackson probably,” Carey said.

Metheny was born in Lee’s Summit, Missouri, a suburb of Kansas City in 1954.

He chose a guitar at age 12, and since that moment, success had followed him. At the age 14, he was a member of “Union Sing,” in Kansas City. He was the youngest teacher at the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida, at age 18. He earned 20 Grammy awards, including best contemporary jazz performance, best rock instrumental performance and, best jazz fusion performance. Only he and Jazz Pianist Chick Corea attended this prestige in all of jazz musical history. Many describe Metheny’s music as relaxing. It includes traditional jazz, rock, folk and Brazilian motives. In 1979, Metheny created a “rockfish” sound from a traditional jazz guitar. As a leader, he has recorded 42 albums; but as backup performer, he has recorded into the hundreds.

“I don’t worry too much about the fundamentalist principles that are in almost any discussion about jazz,” Metheny said. “Jazz is a verb. It’s more like a process than it is a thing.”

Metheny’s fans say he does not follow common jazz rules, and that is what makes him famous.

Annual Haunted House gathers students, actors, volunteers Uyen Han Reporter Thursday night seemed more exciting than usual with students in Halloween costumes coming to the Student Center to attend the Haunted House and Halloween Dance.

The Pit hosted the annual event, attracting about 450 students to join the fun.

“I feel that the event went really well,” Christopher Green, student affairs coordinator, said. “The Haunted House seemed to be perceived well and the students enjoyed the dance.”

The fun started with a ghost in a lab coat sitting in front of the Haunted House, ready to entertain students with spider and scorpion specimens on the table. The ghost appeared to be Mathew Brust, physical and life sciences associate professor, with the specimens made by himself.

“I thought spider would be a dangerous topic for Halloween,” he said, after excitedly explaining about different types of spiders.

He provided useful information and kept students from getting bored while waiting to get in the Haunted House.

The Haunted House’s theme this year was Fear Fest. The house was divided into four sections: jungle, zombie, dolls, and the mental asylum. RLA, CAB, and the International Club helped The Pit host the event. Theatre students helped apply makeup.

The event gathered many students to act in the Haunted House, making it more thrilling. Students changed into zombies, mummies, animals, witches, doctors, and patients, making the scenes lively as they kept moving around, laughing, talking, and interacting with visitors.

If there was an award for the most patient ghost, it would have been given to the student lying on the floor.

Many students did not know whether it was a prop or a person, so they

tried to kick and see if there was a reaction.

The student endured and acted like a prop, then surprised people when they tried to walk by him.

“I stepped on the guy,” Cheyenne Cook, 18, freshman of Ainsworth, admitted.

The Haunted House was breathtaking and full of surprises. A mummy popped up from the left, a witch suddenly started laughing, a zombie appeared in front or a hand came out from behind, and many more. The Pit gave a lot of effort in building the Haunted House, and with the help of many students acting, the Haunted House was an exciting and enjoyable

experience for the participants.

“It was pretty creepy. I got my ankle grabbed,” Teesha Prichard, junior of Eaton, said while catching her breath after getting out of the Haunted House.

When the thrill of terror from the Haunted House was gone, students blended into the beat in the Halloween Dance.

James De la Cerna, 23, senior of San Diego, was the DJ for the dance. He played a variety of music, including hip-hop, pop, old-school, etc. At first, the music was not loud enough to attract students, but some even went back after going to the Haunted House.

Reporter A crowd of community members and students gathered 3 p.m., Sunday at the Chadron Arts Center to hear CSC’s Choral Ensembles, presented by the Chadron State College Department of Music.

The afternoon kicked-off with the Men’s Ensemble. The men sang a variety of compositions including “Hark, I Hear the Harps Eternal,” “Musica,” “Pie Jesu,” “Flanders Fields,” “Ave Maria,” “I’m Gonna Sing ‘Til the Spirit Moves in My Heart,” and “Glory, Glory, Hallelujah!”

Soloists included Zachary Henderson, 21, senior of Douglas, Wyoming, during “Pie Jesu,” and Jacob Wirth, 22, senior of Sidney, during “Glory, Glory, Hallelujah!”

Joel Schreuder, professor of music, directs The Men’s Ensemble. Thirteen male CSC students make up the ensemble.

The group started in 2003 and is made up of tenors and basses from the CSC Concert Choir.

The Chadron State College Women’s Choir, Arioso, took the stage after the men. The women sang a variety of songs including “Bring Me a Little Water, Sylive,” “Lauliku lapsepol,” ”Suite” de Lorca,” and “Dubula”.

The women put on a more vibrant performance compared to the men’s somber and solemn performance. Dance moves and hand gestures by the women helped to energize the crowd. The pieces ranged from traditional folk songs from America, Africa, and Europe to modern music.

Una Taylor, associate professor of music, directs Arioso. The choir is made up of 22 female CSC students.

Taylor talked about how the women are fundraising to take a trip to Ireland. The women’s choir was founded in 2006.

“I’m very proud of my women’s ensemble,” Taylor said.

The performance was free and open to the public.

The Chadron High School’s Student Council and FBLA, Future Business Leaders of America, organized the event’s penny carnival, ugly pickup contest, and costume contest. There were over 30 businesses giving trickor-treaters candy.

“It’s a way for the community to come in and enjoy Halloween,” said Chadron Chamber of Commerce Office Manager Karyn Snook.

It offers a way to familiarize yourself with Chadron’s downtown businesses, Snook said, and allows kids safe trick-or-treating options.

Pickups were smashed, spray-painted, and cobweb covered for the Ugly Pickup Contest. The Ugly Pickup Contest had three categories: just plain ugly, beauty among the beasts, and ugly ranch. Each category winner earned $100 cash.

The Costume contest had four age divisions: 0-3, 4-8, 9-14, and 15 and up. Each division winner earned a gift certificate.

“More people adds to the atmosphere”, Snook said.

Eleven CSC clubs and groups volunteered or sponsored this year’s Moonlight Madness. The International Club has volunteered face painting at Moonlight Madness for multiple years. This was Project Strive’s first year at Moonlight Madness, so they teamed up with FBLA. Project Strive Academic Advisor Kris Koza said Project Strive will probably participate again next year.

The Rodeo Club set up a pumpkin-roping booth. Rodeo Club members taught kids how to lasso a steer made out of a hay bale, a pumpkin, and two squash for horns.

“It’s a way to give back to the community because the community gives so much,” Rodeo Club member, Amanda Brader, 20, senior of Glenvil said.

Brader said the booth is something to show off what the Rodeo Club does.

Other CSC clubs used Moonlight Madness as a fundraising opportunity. The Men’s and Women’s Ensembles had a large pumpkin that people could guess the weight of for $1. They hope to raise money for a choir trip to Ireland. The NAFME, National Association for Music Educators, sold caramel apples, “boo” suckers, and apple cider to fund a Lincoln conference trip.

Moonlight Madness is annually on the Friday before or the Friday during Halloween.

Artis sculpture returns to campus after repairs Cheyenne Deering Reporter

After more than two years, two trips to Omaha, and more than $5,000 in repairs, a damaged sculpture has returned home to Chadron State College.

The piece, a bust created by nationally and internationally renowned sculptor and former CSC instructor William Artis, was accidently knocked from its pedestal in Memorial Hall back in 2012, according to Sarah Polak, director of the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center.

The value of the piece was so great, Professor of Visual and Performing Arts Richard Bird got down on his hands and knees and piece-by-piece saved every shard for restoration.

Polak initiated the repair, but securing funding extended the process. A specific repair fund was used for the project, not student fees, Polak said.

Omaha’s Gerald R. Ford Conservation Center repaired the shattered bust. The center, one of only five places in the U.S. with lab repair capabilities, was selected for its proximity and quality of previous repairs.

“First of all, it’s in Nebraska, even though it’s on the other side of

the state, it’s the closest conservation center to us,” Polak said. “We like, if possible, to spend Nebraska state tax dollars in Nebraska. I was familiar with their work that they have done on other pieces and knew that their work would be spectacular.”

Polak drove the piece to Omaha herself, and then picked up the repaired piece, making sure it was not damaged again.

This bust was the first of many damaged art pieces repaired due to Artis’ importance not only to CSC, but also as a sculptor. Artis, who died in 1977, taught ceramics and sculpture at CSC from 1954-1966.

The time he spent at CSC made a significant impact on the future of the art department.

“He was here at a time when we had art, but art was not a major,” Bird said. “He was instrumental in the birth of the art major.”

Artis’ inspiration extended beyond his CSC classrooms. Artis, originally from New York, is becoming recognized as an influential African-American artist involved with the Harlem Renaissance. After leaving CSC, Artis taught at Mankato State College, now Minnesota State University-Mankato, where he was selected multiple times as an outstanding teacher, according to Bird. The high price of Artis’ pieces at auction reflects his skill and status as a sculptor.

“We knew this was an impor-

tant piece to repair financially,” Polak said. “It is a pretty high visibility piece.”

This piece is one of about 10 Artis busts on campus, for which Artis used student models. Polak believes CSC’s art collection maintains about 28 total pieces of his work.

“To our knowledge, it’s one of the largest collections of his work in the nation,” Polak said.

“We are very fortunate to have the pieces we have,” Bird said.

“There are many colleges and collectors wanting his work.”

Polak hopes this repair will inspire more repairs of damaged artwork on campus. She said CSC’s artwork has not been neglected, but it has not always been cared for “in the best way.”

“We have a lot of artwork on our campus that needs new frames, that needs to be cleaned, that needs to be repaired,” Polak said. “We want to take care of all of our artwork.”

However, many repairs require a large expense, most of them needing close to $5,000.

Although most permanent CSC art collections are on display, the storage space for art awaiting repair is running out. The CSC student increase has put a demand on space for computer labs, music labs, science labs and other student spaces.

“We’ve chosen to create great spaces for students to learn and to live, which is great,” Polak said.

“Things like art are not a priority on

campus for storage, unfortunately.”

Polak hopes the repair of the Artis sculpture will encourage everyone at CSC to appreciate the art collections everywhere on campus, not just in Memorial Hall.

Art is not, “just some picture students walk by everyday. We have great art,” Polak said. “We have amazing collections, not just of art, but of botany and geology and all kinds of stuff all over campus that people don’t really take the time to notice. Hopefully bringing awareness to this piece getting repaired will help people pay a little more attention.”

Art impacts student education at CSC. Campus art is placed specifically for student benefit. It should be appreciated, cared for, and treated with respect.
