In an email to Chadron State employees Tuesday, the Nebraska State College System named its two finalists, one of whom might take the helm as the college’s 11th president.

The NSCS named Randy Rhine, Chadron State’s current interim president, and Guy Mills, president of Northwest Kansas Technical College, Goodland, as the position’s contenders.

Next week both candidates will undergo on-campus meetings and interviews with constituent groups. Candidate evaluation forms will be available at each meeting for attendees to provide feedback, the email states.

The NSCS appointed Rhine to serve as CSC’s interim president after former president Janie Park retired May 11. The System Office advertised the vacancy nationwide in late August. see PRESIDENT,, Page g 3

CAB urges students to question candidates Molly Wedan Sports Editor The Campus Activities Board talked about the importance of attending the CSC presidential candidate meetings coming up next week. Morgan Nelson, student trustee, brought the idea to the floor, and stressed that the students have a huge impact on the candidates.

“The Board has the final say, but they depend a lot on what we say too,” Nelson said.

Guy Mills, one candidate, will be in the Sandhills Room from 1:15-2 p.m. on Monday. Current interim president Randy Rhine will be meeting with students in the same room on from 9:15-10 a.m. Tuesday.

CAB President Dani Buckley, thanked everyone for participating in homecoming and called the events a huge success.

She also told each club that if they had questions about the new, off-campus accounts to talk to Aaron Prestwich, interim executive director of student affairs.

CAB Vice President Lane Swedberg asked for input on what type of act the students would like to see on campus. Some ideas were Eric Church, Brantley Gilbert, and Jeff Dunham, but nothing was decided. Buckley also informed everyone about a possible installation of a rock wall, trying to see how much interest there would be. The possible wall would be built outside the Nelson Physical Activity Center, and much interest was shown.

tend the last, regular season home football game at noon this Saturday.

She also said there would be a Native American presentation at half time to support Native American Month.

“Show support and get everyone there.

We have a really good chance of going to the play-offs and they need your support,” Sinn said.

Darren Burrows, student activities coordinator, said the next free movie night will be Sunday, Nov. 18.

Kelly Aye reported that CAB has $7,769 in unallocated funds.

Sinn left the clubs with the idea of each club decorating an ornament for a tree that will be placed at the courthouse downtown. This will help each club be represented to the public for awareness.

Social work class to host disabilities-focused campus conference A desire to “give back” drove CSC student Samantha Kerner, senior of Baldwin, Iowa, to choose social work as her major, and is, along with class credit, the reason that students from SW435 are hosting the “Dis-Abilities No More–Together We Will Explore” conference from 8 a.m.-4 p.m., Wednesday in the Student Center’s Ballroom.

Kerner and her colleagues are organizing the conference around education, opportunities, and employment for the disabled. Kerner said the conference consists of two keynote speeches and numerous breakout sessions Wednesday morning and afternoon.

Mike Floyd, with the National Federation of the Blind, will deliver the morning keynote address, while Gary May, an author, educator, and Vietnam veteran, will present the afternoon speech.

The event, which includes a complimentary lunch, is free and open to the public.

STUDENT SENATE

Senate addresses old, new campus projects Sara Labor Lifestyles Editor Senators and advisers gave updates on old business at this week’s Student Senate meeting.

T.J. Thomson, vice president, said that he and James Bahensky, president, spoke to Dale Grant, vice president for administration and finance, about putting an ice machine in Edna. The ice machine was requested a few months ago.

Thomson said that the funds for an ice machine in Edna are available, students would just have to find a suitable location.

Molly Wedan, senator of High Rise, reported on the new exercise equipment and renovations in the basement of High Rise. Wedan spoke to Tami Fosher, manager of Residence Life, who said that new televisions have been installed in the High Rise basement. Fosher also said that they are putting in a resistance band station, and will be building a plastic cage

to hold workout balls. Finally, they will be adding a cabinet for workout tapes.

According to Wedan, Fosher also said that treadmills have been bought for Brooks and Edna.

Aaron Prestwich, interim executive director of student affairs, said last week the proposal to let veterans go to college in Nebraska for in-state tuition was brought up. The proposal, Prestwich said, will probably be submitted to the Board of Trustees in the spring. The Board sets the fees for Nebraska colleges in spring. Prestwich said that Randy Rhine, interim president, is in favor of the proposal. In order for students to show support, Prestwich said, they can email Rhine.

Prestwich also brought up the new Chadron State College logo, which was in question a few weeks ago. The three logos which were brought forward will not be used. Three more mock-up logos will be made, and students will be able to voice their opinion once more.

Finally, Jocelyn Utecht said that she and Jacob Rissler

looked into intramural sport fees, which were questioned last week. Utecht said she spoke to Chris Green, NPAC coordinator. Green said that the fees are being used to buy equipment so the intramural teams can compete on a higher level.

Green said that he is still using some money from operations fund, but with the bad economy, needed a little extra help.

Green also said that the fee amount would depend on what sport students were participating in. In a sport with more people, the fee will be $25, but in a sport with less players, the fee may only be $10-15.

In other business, Bahensky said that the presidential candidates for Chadron State will be on campus next week.

Susan Schaeffer, adviser, said that social work is putting on a conference regarding disabilities. She said that if anyone is interested in attending it will be in the ballroom, 8 a.m.

Educational standards should not be sacrificed Chadron State College boasts the lowest advertised rate for the 2011-12 academic year at $4,330, according to a survey of tuition and fee rates among 36 four-year colleges and universities in the Midwest.

The report, prepared by the University of Wyoming in November of 2011, includes eight states neighboring Nebraska and bases its calculations on a 24-credit academic year for graduate students at resident rates.

Wayne State and the University of Nebraska-Kearney rank as the second and third lowest rates at $5,316 and $5,987 respectively.

Chadron State comes in fifth in room and board charges, however, behind three institutions in North Dakota and one in Utah, the survey states. This time, 41 institutions in the surrounding region were examined and compared.

The survey stated that, for the 2011-12 academic year, CSC charges $5,310 for a double-occupancy room and on-campus meal plan (assuming an 18-21 meal per week plan is purchased).

The least expensive option compared for room and board is Utah’s Weber State University at $4,202.

Thus, from the data collected, Chadron State ranks quite well in tuition and fee charges, and only slightly less so in room and board fees.

The question, then, is whether CSC skimps on quality to deliver such an economically-affordable higher education experience to students.

Hopefully, Chadron State does not sacrifice quality for affordability. Some students of Chadron may be equally as qualified for an education as those at Harvard. However, these students may have more limited resources.

Students may have chosen CSC for its affordability, but that does not mean that they aren’t interested in getting just as good of an education as any other school. College is not meant for going through the motions of four years in order to get a degree. College is about learning and expanding, and choosing an affordable school should not mean sacrificing that.

‘Reproduction’ is no reason to ban gay marriage Franklin Annis Columnist

When I was a much younger man I remember having a conversation with several of my friends that wanted to become Roman Catholic priests. They told me that one of the requirements to become a priest was that they had to be fully functional males; Men that where incapable of fathering children were prohibited from joining the seminary. It didn’t matter what caused their reproducing problems, birth defects or physical trauma to their reproductive organs could bar them from this profession.

The theory behind this was that only a man that was fully capable of reproductivity was able to make the complete sacrifices when taking the vows of celibacy. The early Catholic primary intent behind marriage was for reproductive purposes. Therefore one man and one woman would wed in order to create a family.

If either of these two individuals were known to be sterile for any reason, then they could be denied the privilege of marriage because they could not meet the reproductive purpose of the union. Since entering the priesthood was similar to marriage, it was understandable in this context that sterile men could not enter into this type of union.

While I understand the intent behind this belief I could not imagine denying individuals a chance to marry or enter into the priesthood because of a birth defect, trauma or old age.

Nor could I ever imagine having to provide the capability to be fertile to get married.

Ever since that conversation I have always felt strongly against limiting individuals based on their reproductive ability. I could not view a man less than a man or a woman less than a woman just because they couldn’t bare children.

While we claim to be a nation which separates church and state I find it perplexing that we continue to limit marriage based on religious principles. It is apparent that not allowing homosexuals to get married will not impact the practice of homosexuality within our culture. If we try to claim that marriage should be restricted for those intending to start and raise a family than we need to adjust the way we grant marriage licenses. If this were truly the purpose of marriage, then we should have those getting married sign contracts stating he or she will attempt to have children and each party should be tested for fertility.

If we deny homosexuals the right to marry based on the fertility issue we also have to tell all those that have become sterile due to birth defects, trauma, or advanced age that they are also no longer entitled the right to marry. I doubt we would ever go that far and I would certainly not want to see our country sink to such a level.

While I am heterosexual, but I am not willing to deny any person, regardless of sexual orientation, rights that I would claim for myself. We might as well give them the chance to get married. Would it really make that much of a social impact? If homosexual couples are living years together in committed relationships now, do they truly need a paper from the state saying they are married if they already live a married life? Having or not having a piece of paper will not change current social

practices. So we might as well stop treating them as less than equal.

While allowing homosexuals to marry would have significant impact of entitlements normally associated with marriage such as access to health insurance, I do not believe that these factors alone can be used as legitimate reasons to prevent this community from being allow to be married. It is true that the impact of homosexual marriages would impact several industries. We need to be aware of these impacts before we can move forward, but we should not allow fear of change to lock us into the position America largely holds to.

If we truly want to be a country that separates church and state, maybe it is time to let go of some specific Christian principles that are not universally found in the hundreds of other religions or Christian denominations practiced in America. If we are not willing to prevent sterile heterosexual individuals from marrying than we have no grounds to prevent homosexual marriages on the grounds of fertility.

Once we remove the issue of fertility, we are left with only the argument of gender. I believe this country has already made strives in realizing that both genders are capable and that prejudice on gender alone is not an effective means of determining an individuals capabilities. I think it is time that we stop denying individuals rights based on reproductive limitations we are only willing to apply to the homosexual community.

With recent referendums in states like Maryland, Washington, and Maine showing public support for same-sex marriage, opposition to equal rights is losing more and more arguments. People need to stop kidding themselves and learn to accept others for who they are, and allow them to freely make their own marital and familial decisions.

On election night it was no surprise President Obama was re-elected. However, one surprise that night was the number of Democrats who gained seats in the Senate, and quite a few pundits attributed that gain to the ultraconservative Tea Party candidates in several states. Such extremism turned off voters and gave votes to their Democratic opponents. And yet, for me, a big disappointment was the fact that former senator Bob Kerrey lost the Nebraska’s U.S. Senate race to Sarah Palin-endorsed Deb Fischer, allowing the Tea Party to once again throw out moderate, rational individuals for far-right demagogues.

I’ve always had hope for Nebraska to choose level-headed people for Senate, from both sides of the aisle. I was especially proud to have Republican Chuck Hagel as our senator, as well as Democrat Ben Nelson – two fine senators who proved to be real mavericks in their parties. Yet, since the arrival of the Tea Party and its ilk, Nebraska has fallen into the hyper-conservative and anti-intellectual ditch. A state I once could count on as having an “Eisenhower Republican” populous (fiscally conservative, good, but also a “mind your own business” attitude to social issues”) has evolved into a more sinister, frightened, and uncompromising creature.

With Bob Kerrey we had a man of experience as a Vietnam veteran, a Nebraska governor, a wellliked U.S. Senator, a businessman, and someone who managed and revitalized a major college (whose overwhelmingly irrational liberal student body twice tried to force him to resign). But who needs a person of experience when the state can have a nobody jump from a state senator to Con-

America keeps Obama but Nebraska loses sanity gress? People will tell me President Obama started out as a state senator and that’s true. But while I may defend Obama from irrational criticisms (I have my fair share) I’m not in the Obama tank; I didn’t even vote for him this year (my vote went to Gary Johnson). Bob Kerrey, Mike Johanns, and Ben Nelson have all been Nebraska governors; they garnered the experience and respect to serve the state in Congress more than Fischer and others have.

One of the attacks on Kerrey from the right was that he hadn’t been in Nebraska for years.

So what? Virtually every young person I know doesn’t want to live here, and yet we don’t disown him or her from our families. But worse than being out of the state, Kerrey lived in New York City.

Good God! So, Kerrey was living in a part of the country where one can find great diversity, culture, the arts, ample intellectuals, and people who read books other than the one where the main character is a 2,000 year-old Palestinian Jew (or Twilight)? What a traitor.

Still, I find it rather hypocritical that one can besmirch and denigrate people from big cities, but if one rightly reciprocates and calls out rural America for being less educated, less cultured, more religiously superstitious, and even antiintellectual they’re called “arrogant.” Personally, I think rural America should be criticized and be pressured to catch up to the modern world more often – though I am content knowing Nebraska is at least further ahead than most of the South.

Now I don’t mean to say that Deb Fischer doesn’t have some well-meaning and good ideas, but her policies are too vague and don’t have any kind of originality. For example, her website says she supports the Federal Marriage Amendment (i.e., marriage between one man and one women). I wasn’t aware that this was a major issue of the day, but it doesn’t surprise me since many can’t accept the fact that homosexuality is natural, regardless of what an immoral 2,000 year-old work of fiction says. It’s interesting that she wants the government to impose public “morality” on everyone, since when same-sex marriage is legalized via a state legislature that conservatives say

it’s being “shoved down our throats” and “unconstitutional.” At the same time they want Congress to define marriage only as heterosexual. I love it.

I’m not surprised that she doesn’t accept climate change as a reality. (I say “accept” as opposed to “believe”; scientific facts like climate change, evolution, and others are facts, and facts are either accepted or denied in favor of superstition.) Perhaps it was Bob Kerrey’s acceptance of climate change that made him lose votes, even though he worries about how it can affect Nebraskan agriculture (surely the public hasn’t already forgotten the heat wave this summer). He wasn’t an Al Gore radical though, as he thought that programs such as Cap and Trade wouldn’t solve anything (something Fischer would even agree with).

Yet, his acceptance of man-influenced climate change is all that the irrational needed to hear. As long as certain people deny the science, they can still claim that they don’t have to sacrifice or cut their luxuries, and of course they can’t possibly live without their truck. Remember the Tea Party mentality: a nice house, big cars, unlimited access to firearms, and a high standard of living are not privileges, they are rights. In Nebraska too, the hypocrisy runs deep; conservatives are anti-government, but they will throw a fit if the government ceases socialistically subsidizing agriculture (an action I would support, as truly principled fiscal conservative).

Nevertheless. I have to accept the results of the election and the wishes of the majority of the state. I have little hope of Deb Fischer being a compromising type, but if she’s anything like Minnesota’s Michelle Bachmann or Palin then this state should be ashamed of itself. I’m always up for surprises, but I have no faith in our senator-elect. But hey, our elected officials really are a reflection of the people who voted for them. If you have a population that thinks that Palin is a profound thinker (or that she even can think), then one need only hold up a mirror.

As the late great Christopher Hitchens said about the Tea Party electorate, “All politics is yokel.” So very true, Hitch.

Official army and navy hats were placed alongside other veteran pictures and memoirs.

The seductive notes of a jazz riff wafted through the Student Center’s ballroom Friday evening as about 100 people gathered to support the region’s military through the second-annual “Helping a Hero” veterans ball.

The event, “Helping a Hero,” is in its second year and is once again sponsored by two of Chadron State’s student organizations–the Public Relations and War Eagles clubs.

During the event, participants raised $1,282 for the Womens’ Auxiliary and American Legion organizations.

'The CSC Birds" music ensemble provided intermittent accompaniment for a series of dances that occurred throughout the evening. These dances were interspersed among three speeches delivered by veterans and a date or work auction from a pool of 20 ROTC cadets.

“With us being one of the nation’s most military-friendly schools, it [the event] gives us an opportunity to give back,” Shaunda French, Public Relations Club sponsor, said Tuesday.

Public Relations Club President Tiffany Valandra,29, sophomore of Hardin, Mont., said Wednesday that the club decided to donate event proceeds to charity as a way to physically help, rather than simply show their support.

"We wanted to be able to support veterans in addition to appreciating them," Valandra said.

By land and air, Eagles feast on Skyhawks, 45-20 Barrett Browne Reporter At the homecoming game, “Get up Eaglenation” t-shirts were for sale to encourage school spirit. The shirts must have worked as the Eagles improved to 8-2 overall with a 45-20 win over Fort Lewis. Action started off slow, but the CSC defense forced four turnovers on Saturday, all of which were converted into points in order to capture the victory.

Chadron State is now 7-1 in the RMAC with one more game remaining. A win next week would seal the Eagles a spot in the Division II playoffs.

“I like to look at this upcoming game as an actual playoff game,” Head Football coach Jay Long said. “If we win, we’re in the playoffs, if we lose, I’ll be proud of our guys.”

Fort Lewis struck first with a 32-yard field goal. But wide receiver Nathan Ross, junior of San Diego, Calif., returned the next kickoff 42 yards. Two plays later, Ross would haul in a 48yard pass for a touchdown to give the Eagles the lead.

On the next Fort Lewis drive, safety Trelan Taylor, junior of La Mesa,Calif., recorded his first of two interceptions. Chadron would then drive down to the opponent’s fouryard line before quarterback Jonn McLain, sophomore of Chadron, scampered into the end-zone to add to the Eagles lead.

Fort Lewis then scored 10 unanswered points to tighten up the score 14-13.

“Each week we have a new game plan, and this week we wanted to be sure that we started off strong,” coach Long said.

Midway through the second quarter, CSC scooped up a fumble. Two plays later, running back Glen Clinton, junior of Cody, Wyo., broke free for 23 yards and a touchdown.

At the start of Fort Lewis’ next drive, safety Phil Rivera, senior of Apple Valley, Calif., forced a fumble which Taylor recovered. Kicker Alex Ferdinand, sophomore of Rapid City, S.D., then added three more points to the scoreboard on a 36-yard field goal attempt.

After a three and out by Fort Lewis, McLain found Ross down the sideline for 43 yards and a touchdown to make the score 31-13 just before half time.

Ross finished the day with six catches for 130 total yards and two touchdowns. He also received CSC Athlete of the Week honors.

Brandon Gorsuch, senior of Rapid City, S.D., took over the quarterback duties for the Eagles during the third quarter. On their first drive of the half, Chadron handed the ball off to Clinton seven straight times before he finally bulldozed four yards into the end-zone.

Defensively Keifer Burker, senior of Brady, recorded two sacks and now leads the team with 15 total on the season.

“We stopped the pass well, and made plays,” Long said. “ We came up with four big turnovers.”

Patrick O’Boyle, sophomore of Gering, then got a chance at quarterback in the fourth quarter and completed his first pass to his younger brother Danny O’Boyle, freshman of Gering, for 25 yards and a first down. Tailback Michael Madkins, sophomore of Elk Grove, Calif., scored later in the drive on a three-yard run.

Fort Lewis concluded the scoring with a nine-play, 72 yard drive.

McLain completed 11 of 15 passes for 241 yards. The Eagles finished the game with 419 total yards of offense.

This Saturday is Senior Day for the Eagles, as well as the last regular season game. Mines is currently 6-4 overall, and leads the conference in scoring offense with an average of 41.8 points per game. Kick-off is set for noon on Saturday at Elliot Field.

Women’s basketball falls in opening exhibition games Molly Wedan Sports Editor Chadron State’s women’s basketball team has played two exhibition games to start of the 2012-13 season. The first was against Bringham Young University, played last Thursday, when the Eagles lost 89-51. After that loss, the Lady Eagles traveled to Colorado Springs to take on the Air Force Falcons.

The story was much the same when they were beat 83-57. Injuries took a toll on CSC in both games.

“Injuries are an unfortunate part of the sport, but fortunately we have capable players that can step up when these injuries occur,” Head Coach Tim Connealy said.

In the game against BYU, Chadron had trouble scoring, and had only one player end the game with double figures.

Dallas Shaw, sophomore guard of Buffalo, Wyo., scored 17 points, most of which were free throws.

Top scorer for BYU was Ashley Garfield who also scored 17 points.

BYU shot 48.1 percent, compared to CSC’s 24.6 percent. Another contributor was Hattie Guzman, redshirt freshman guard of Scottsbluff, who scored nine points.

For CSC, Jazmin Lopez, freshman guard of Indio, Calif., led in steals with four to help

the Eagles defense. However, the Eagles only tallied 10 total steals, while the Cougars completed the game with 24.

In the game against the Air Force Falcons, the competition was pretty even in the first half when the Eagles only trailed by nine points after the first 20 minutes. de However, turnovers proved to be the deciding factor in the game. The Falcons scored 35 points off of 33 CSC turnovers.

Overall, CSC improved their shooting percentage from the BYU game to 36 from the field, while Air Force ladies shot 43 percent.

Leading scorer for CSC was Jazmin Lopez. She scored 14 points and had nine rebounds. Two more guards,

junior of Rapid City, S.D., Kattie Ranta and Hattie Guzman both score 12 points. Ranta also had nine boards and Guzman contributed eight.

“Our goal this season is to improve every day. We have been working on improving all areas of our game but our focus has been man to man defensive rotations” Connealy said. “We put them through a hard preseason redgimine which I feel brought them closer together as a team.”

The Lady Eagles host Montana State University-BIllings at 3 p.m. on Sunday in Armstrong.

Dancing Hordes of students piled into the Student Center lobby October 31 for the Haunted Dance. In lieu of Halloween, students were decked out head-to-toe, in many different types of costumes. Some costumes included cheerleading outfits, hippies, nerds, cowboys and cowgirls, and of course, a few zombies stumbling around. Multiple genres of music brought students to their feet to dance along side their friends and peers. Line dances, such as the Cupid Shuffle, were a big hit and had students moving to the music, filling the lobby floor. Along with music, different types of drinks were served, all named after some sort of Halloween horror.

The second production of this year’s Chadron State College’s theatre season is rapidly approaching. “God of Carnage,” opens just a week from today.

“God of Carnage” is a drama about two sets of parents who meet to discuss their sons.

discuss how Alan and Annette’s son has attacked theirs. Though the meeting starts in a civilized manner, it quickly dissolves into irrational arguments about misogyny, racial prejudice, and homophobia.

“God of Carnage,” originally a French production by Yasmina Reza, has been successful in both its original French as well as English. In 2011, it was adapted into a movie “Carnage” directed by Roman Polanski.
