SENATE UPDATES BUDGETS

After examining funds, the Chadron State Senate has vetoed a decision to allocate $10,000 to The Big Event.

Having previously agreed upon the $10,000 amount, research into the Senate budget revealed potential shortages which influenced the Senate’s

decision to veto. The veto, passed during Monday’s meeting, afforded the Senate additional time to update budget numbers, allowing a more informed decision regarding The Big Event.

CAB will also present potential solutions.

Senate vetoes $10,000 allocation for Big Event budget Eagle Staff After a request by AFB, Vice President Konery Klueber, junior of Rapid City, South Dakota, vetoed The Big Event’s budget and opened an extra two weeks for discussion on the topic.

The veto, typically performed by the Senate president, was instead made by Vice President Konery Klueber due to a conflict of interest on the part of President Lukas Klueber, junior of Rapid City. President Klueber is the Finance Coordinator for The Big Event.

According to Senate Chief Justice Sam Merrill, senior of Hot Springs, South Dakota, President Klueber’s inability to perform the duties of president per article III, section 2.1 of the Senate by-laws meant veto power fell to the vice president’s role per article VI, section 2.1 of those same by-laws.

Article III, section 2.1 of the by-laws states, “The President shall serve as the official representative of the student body at all meetings and convocations concerning it, and shall voice the position most favorable for the students.”

According to Article VI, section 2.1, “In the event of a vacancy in the office of President, the Vice President shall assume the office.”

In an e-mail to Eagle staff, President Klueber states he “had to abstain from voting on the veto.”

However, the vice president’s veto Monday evening might have been performed in error as The Eagle has found no indication an official transfer of powers from president to vice president was made. The language of senate by-laws does not indicate whether an official transfer is required given a conflict of interest on the part of the president. It is also unclear if Senate by-laws dictate that President Klueber’s abstaining from the presidential decision to veto creates a vacancy in the presidency.

In last week’s Senate meeting, The Big Event committee was allocated the full $10,000 they requested. AFB had initially recommended $4,700 for The Big Event’s budget, but after the additional $5,300 was granted, this left the Senate account short of the extra $5,000. If The Big Event is re-allocated the original $10,000, this will leave the Senate account

with $187.05 remaining for future projects in the remaining school year. Though Senate would continue to meet, the budget could restrict allocations for clubs and events in the spring semester.

“It doesn’t mean we will shut down,” Vice President Klueber said. “It just means that if clubs come to us, if events come with their stuff we feel passionate about funding, we just don’t have the funds. We have to say no.”

At this point, The Big Event does not have funding.

However, the veto can be overruled if two-thirds majority of senators vote to keep the allocation and grant The Big Event committee their requested $10,000. Senators also recommended possibilities such as allocating the full funds with restrictions and co-sponsorships with CAB clubs.

CAB Chair Kimberly Hernandez, senior of Scottsbluff, said she will bring the proposed sponsorships to CAB’s attention. Though the CAB account does not have the funds to help, clubs have only spent around $22,000 in allocated funds, which leaves the possibility for co-sponsorship open.

Senate agreed to table the decision for two weeks.

Only six CAB representatives and students attended the leadership training hosted by Senate on Saturday. Though another training session was held for Student Senate members, members of the CAB board addressed the importance of attending available trainings and passing the information off to other members in their clubs.

“Part of your commitment to CAB includes relaying the information we give you,” CAB Chair Kimberly Hernandez, senior of Scottsbluff, said.

Applications to apply for graduation are due Nov. 15. Graduating students can find the form on their myCSC page and fill out the form from the site. The application fee is $20.

Applications for the student trustee position in Senate are due Nov. 26. Current Student Trustee Dawson Brunswick, senior of McCook, encouraged non-graduating students to consider the position as an opportunity to represent and serve students at CSC. “You are the representative for all of the students at Chadron, it is an awesome job

and a great responsibility. You get to travel to all of the board meetings and meet lots of new people,” Brunswick said.

The Pit is hosting a doubles pool tournament from 9 p.m. - midnight on Thursday.

CAB is hosting free bowling night from 6-9 p.m. on Sunday with free pizza at Hilltop Lanes.

RLA will host the movie “Suicide: The Ripple Effect” from 6:30-8:30 p.m. on Monday in The Hub. RLA is hosting Thanksgiving Turkeys 11 – 1 p.m., Monday – Thursday at the Student Center.

Eagle Drumline looking for members for Spring 2019 Torri Brumbaugh Co-Editor CSC’s Eagle Drumline is looking for new members and invites interested students, even those not in the music department, to a informational meet and greet at 4 p.m., Friday, in Room 104, Memorial Hall.

Students can meet current drumline members and test different percussion instruments, during the meeting.

Richard Puzzo, Jr., assistant professor of music and percussion instructor, said the drumline class will begin in Spring 2019 and will meet from 3 - 4:30 p.m. on Fridays.

They are hoping for at least 17 members due to the 17 instruments they have:

six snare drums, three multi tenor drums, five bass drums and three crash cymbals.

The snare drums and multi tenor drums are best suited for non-music students who have previous experience, and the bass drums and crash cymbals are best suited for students without experience.

The group will continue to perform with the Eagle Band at athletic events, but will also play choreographed routines during halftime at football and basketball games. Puzzo not only wants to perform at sporting events, but events like meeting and conferences to “increase our visibility on campus and our musical service.”

“It’s a great opportunity to be a part of something bigger than the one person and one instrument you are,” Austin Pfeiffer, 19, sophomore of Alliance, said.

BRIEFS CSC RLOP students tour UNL College of Law

The students in the Rural Law Opportunity Program (RLOP) had the opportunity to tour the University of Nebraska’s College of Law in Lincoln on Oct. 23-25.

The program took 12 students and two faculty members.

While there, the students were able to watch six attorneys dispute cases in the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals Special Session, toured the law school and dined with UNL College of Law Dean Richard Moverly and Associate Professor Anthony Schutz.

“The tour showed me that law school does not have to be a scary place. Anyone can attend and succeed as long as they are willing to put in the time and effort that is required. There is such a range of personalities that can fit in well,” Chessa Parker, one of the students who was able to go on the trip said.

CSC cadets participate in Army 10 Miler

The Chadron State College ROTC cadets ranked 41st out of 96 teams in the Army’s 10 Miler race in Washington D.C. Oct. 5-8. The group was led by First Lt. Scot Mullis and assistant professor of Military Science “It’s an impressive finish for a small program competing against larger programs,” Mullis said.

They were also able to tour Arlington National Cemetery, the National Mall and participate in the Army USA conference.

HPER Club hosts Frozen Turkey Trot

The Chadron State College’s HPER Club presents “The Annual Frozen Turkey Trot 5K run/ walk” at 9 a.m. on Nov. 17 at the NPAC. The entry fee is $25 per person. Participants must register

by Nov. 13 by 2 p.m. to receive a race t-shirt. Check in on race day will begin at 8:15 a.m. There are also many prizes to be won by participants. Registration forms are available at the NPAC. For more information, contact Donna Ritzen at 308-432-6297.

Senate revises budget Eagle Staff In a meeting Tuesday with editors from The Eagle, members of Senate further clarified budget decisions that led to the Big Event budget veto.

Vice President Konery Klueber, junior of Rapid City, South Dakota; Vice President of Finance Lily Umeta, sophomore of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia; Student Trustee Dawson Brunswick, senior of McCook; and Student Activities Coordinator Megan Northrup broke down the numbers concerning budget allocations, cuts made and what this will mean for funding in the upcoming semester.

During this meeting, The Eagle requested documentation of Senate’s budget.

At around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday night, The Eagle received a modified version of documents presented to Senate during Monday night’s meeting when the Big Event budget was vetoed.

This modified document reflected a balance of $946.31 after all allocations were made to include $10,000 for the requested Big Event budget, which differed from the $187.05 balance presented during this week’s Senate meeting.

Upon finding this discrepancy, The Eagle staff then compared the AFB document provided to The Eagle with prior Eagle coverage of Senate allocations during the 201718 academic year.

At 10 a.m. Wednesday morning, Eagle staff again met with Umeta and Northrup to discuss found inconsistencies. During this meeting, The Eagle requested the official AFB spreadsheets breaking down Senate’s budget.

In response to earlier requests, Umeta sent The Eagle a revised document at around 1 p.m. Wednesday, showing a comparison of 2017-18 allocated funds versus AFB recommendations for 2018-19.

The Eagle staff met again with Umeta to clarify questions regarding the revised document at around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday evening.

Umeta, at this time, informed The Eagle staff that, between The Eagle’s Wednesday morning meeting with Umeta and Northrup and the meeting Wednesday evening, AFB had been working to update and correct the Senate budget which is shown on the right.

This document is up to date as of Nov. 7.

At the beginning of each school year, student activity fees are collected for up to 12 credit hours. Budgets are created from estimates based on enrollment, but according to Northrup these numbers can fluctuate depending on factors like students adding and dropping classes, especially in the first month of school.

“I could look at it [the budget] one day and have something, and look at it the next day and have a dif-

ferent number,” Northrup said.

For the past two years, the senate budget has been negative. When Northrup came into her position as Student Activities Coordinator last November, the budget was in a $60,000 deficit; this year, the budget is still negative by $20,000, but senate’s goal is to stay away from going negative in the remainder of the school year. $200,000 was the estimate Administration and Finance gave for the 2018-2019 year, and this is the budget AFB works with. $135,131.32 was given to CAB and allocated to clubs on campus. The remaining balance is then used by senate to allocate funds for additional events throughout the semester.

This is where events such as Spring Days, The Nearly Naked Mile and the Big Event come in. As of right now, Senate has $34,000 in unallocated funds, which is money up for grabs that would go toward these events.

This year, the Spring Days budget is $10,000, $16,450 under last year’s budget of $26,450. The

The veto of the Big Event budget comes after AFB re-evaluated their budget following the $10,000 approval last Monday.

Senate will table The Big Event budget for another two weeks to allow time for CAB, Senate and The Big Event to discuss possible co-sponsorships and senators to talk to their constituents.

When Senate does meet, they can either vote to retain the veto or can choose to re-allocate Big Event funding with a two-thirds majority vote. In this time, Northrup advises students to get in touch with their senators and voice their opinions on where student funds are allocated.

Vice Chair of Records Kristina McGann, senior of Broken Bow, said this would give enough time for CAB and clubs to decide on the best course of action.

“If we give it two weeks, then we can address CAB next week and have enough time for people to respond,” McGann said.

Adviser Markus Jones added that if Senate allocates the $5,000 and is left with $187.05, they would only have to turn down further requests without needing discussion.

“A budget is a budget. Once that money is spent, it’s gone. All you [Senate] would need to do is say no,” Jones said.

Health Professions Committee requested $2,096 for their professional development trip in Granby and Denver, Colorado. After AFB’s proposed $1,576.74, senators voted 13-1 in favor of the recommendation.

Revive requested $7,825 for their Cru Winter Conference in Denver December 29-Jan 2. Senators voted 12-2 in favor of AFB’s recommended $2,474.55 The Health and Well-Being Committee announced that CSC’s Health Line contract, which is the service that provides information on student health through Student Health 101, is up in December. The opportunity for a new contract comes through a Colorado University-designed program. If implemented, the service would be available to all students in the spring of 2019.

Shannon Schneider News Editor When soldiers returning from the Vietnam War stepped off plane stairs and onto American soil, there weren’t throngs of citizens with arms wide open shouting “welcome home!”

Instead, the picture looked like this: angry protesters stood where, normally, smiling faces would have been. They shouted obscenities, called the troops “baby killers” and even spat on them.

Some didn’t wear their medals for years for fear of public backlash.

Today, that narrative has changed.

We acknowledge and honor the 58,148 Americans killed in the Vietnam War as well as the 304,000 wounded veterans.

Additionally, we remember the 1.1 million Americans killed in all American wars and venerate the nearly 18.2 million veterans alive today. In their honor we have created Veterans Day, a day we set aside to observe the sacrifices veterans have made yesterday, today and tomorrow.

Though this is considered a national holiday, not all feel the need to pay respects to our veterans. For some, it’s a

form of protesting the actions of the government, as was the case with the Vietnam war. Others paint troops as killing machines with no regard for human life.

Once again, refer to the Vietnam example.

I don’t think those who disrespect our veterans are looking at the whole picture.

To shed some light, here are a few statistics about American vets: -According to the National Coalition for Homeless Veterans, 11 percent of the adult homeless population are veterans.

However, about 1.4 million vets are at risk of homelessness due to poverty, lack of support networks and substandard housing.

-The median income for veterans was $30,096, well below the U.S. Census Bureau’s median American income of $59,039.

-About 3.8 million veterans suffer from a service-related disability, which includes both physical and mental injuries.

Though these are dismal facts, there are more that speak to our veterans’ contributions: -14.7 million veterans voted in the 2012 presidential election. 70 percent cast a ballot in the election compared to the

we asked:

60.9 percent of non-veterans who voted according to the 2015 Veteran’s Day press release from the U.S. Census Bureau.

-According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, higher numbers of veterans attain some college education and associates degrees than non-veterans, with 22.8 percent attending some college compared to 18.6 percent of non-vets and 12.5 percent earning an associates contrasted with 9.4 percent of non-vets.

-Veterans contribute $1.2 trillion in sales receipts and make up $5.79 million of America’s employees according to Entrepreneur.com These numbers don’t lie, and the story they tell about veterans is a compelling one. Not only have they put their lives in jeopardy and pay hefty prices for it, but they also make up an informed, educated and successful American demographic.

Though you have the right to not observe Veterans Day, I encourage you to seriously think about your reasoning.

Looking at the few facts here, veterans have earned respect tenfold, and to take one day to thank them seems reasonable.

Remember November 11 and 12 to thank a veteran, but consider extending those thanks to every day of the year, not just on the national holiday.

Take time to focus on your self Bright Side Rachel Mitchell Columnist We have two months left of this year. That is not a lot of time for all the things that need to happen in that time.

Between holidays, studying, finals, work and all the other things that go on in our life, there is a lot going on. During this extremely busy time of year, we might lose sight of what we really want and need to do for ourselves.

I know that I get caught up in all the things I have to do that I forget about the things I need to do to take care of myself. Before the holiday season and crazy end of school schedule kicks in I have a challenge for you. No matter who you are or where you are in life, take 15 minutes out of your

day to write down the things that are important to you.

This list doesn’t need to be super long, and there’s no real requirements to how many you should have. But take time to right down what you don’t want to forget to do to help yourself.

For some, your list may include taking time to go to the gym, writing, spending 30 minutes to simply unwind or watching a new movie every week. Others may want to take

time to play with their dog, do a girls or guys night, play pool or make sure to call home every other day.

Maybe add something to the list you’d like to start doing.

Maybe you want to read a book a month or start going to the gym. Include that in the list too! Just don’t add too many new things into your list or it might be hard to stay on top of all the things you need to remind yourself of.

Whatever you want to remind yourself not to lose sight of during this very busy season take time to write it down and put it somewhere where you can see it everyday. The last thing you want to do is wake up one day after the new year and feel absolutely run down. Take time for yourself and to do what you love. Try and encourage your friends and family to do the same.

Athletes and non-athletes should hang sometime Isioma Akwanamnye Guest Columnist Since my arrival here on campus, I’ve heard several people complain about how athletes here seem to have a “god complex.”

I have always wondered why this is so, and that’s the rationale behind this letter. It is imperative for students to be informed about how a couple of people on campus feel about this. A couple of personal experiences with some of the athletes on campus have made me share the same beliefs about athletes who have a huge dose of ego and have also made me question those same beliefs too.

Being an athlete isn’t the easiest job.

Between 6:00 a.m. practice, classes, homework, evening practices, away games and trying to catch-up with school work while away; it is sometimes easy to get self-absorbed and narcissistic without even knowing. In Daniel Gallan’s article titled “Arrogance or Confidence: The Role of Egos in Elite Sport,” he argues that athletes require certain qualities, skills and, sometimes, ego to be the best at what they do, but explains

that the line between confidence and arrogance is as fine as the line between success and failure.

I understand that confidence is a very important quality in the sporting world because it helps to boost your performance as athletes. Sometimes it seems athletes mistake ego for self-confidence, especially when relating to non-athletic students.

This creates stereotypical misconceptions about athletes being snobs, cocky or that they feel superior to other regular students.

Often misconceptions arise due to lack of proper communication between athletes and regular students. This, I feel, is a blame shared by both parties. It’s easier for athletes to socialize with people they already know and are familiar with as compared to meeting new people on campus they don’t know. It is also easy for regular students to stereotype athletes as being “self-absorbed and privileged jocks.”

“Athletes are unconsciously segregated people on campus who are always in their shells and are either by themselves or with their team-mates,” student Chinaza Nwosa, said.

Stereotypical misconceptions like this arise as a result of cracks in communication between athletes and non-athletic students.

While some athletes may be egotistical, not all athletes are. Athletes put in an average of 9-12 hours every day between practices, weights, drills and other activities to enhance their performances, so there isn’t enough time for them to socialize with students who are non-athletes. Their schedules are tight, and this leaves little room for social interactions most of the time.

Football player Matt Vargas said, “It’s easy for people to make generalized comments about us being snobs because we’re always with fellow athletes or teammates more than regular students who are non-athletes.”

Students overlook a very important point about how stereotyping people, in this case, athletes, leads us into passing biased judgments and affecting how we relate to them. Having a preconceived notion that they are egotistical makes it even harder to want to get to know them as individuals and not as the person behind the jersey.

Both students and athletes must make conscious efforts to get to know each other. Little things such as saying hello, exchanging pleasantries or even a simple smile would probably go a long way in trying to fix the relationship between athletes and regular students. Not all athletes have a god complex, and we shouldn’t generalize based on those few who do.

Moving forward, creating a conducive environment for athletes and non-athletic students to get to know each other would be a step in the right direction. Personally, I recommend that the school organizes a “meet and greet” for regular students to get to meet the athletes on campus. I understand that some sports like the basketball, wrestling and volleyball teams do this but the same can also be done for the football team, also. I know there are many students on the football team and this could pose a problem for the college, but I hope that the appropriate bodies take this suggestion into consideration. Getting to know the athletes behind the jerseys would go a long way in ensuring good communication and rapport athletes and non-athletes.

Karst takes second at Cowboy Open Brandon Davenport Sports Editor The Chadron State wrestling team saw its first action, and Eagle wrestler Chance Karst, sophomore of Powell, Wyoming, earned a second-place finish, Saturday, at the Cowboy Open, in Laramie, Wyoming.

“I thought as a whole we did a pretty good job,” Chadron Head Coach Brett Hunter said.

“We have a lot to fix, but we have time and we knew going in that we weren’t 100% ready.”

Karst earned second place in the Elite bracket at the open, following a 16-4 major decision in favor of University of Wyoming’s Sam Turner, of Colorado Springs, Colorado, in the final bout of the 141-pound class.

Northeastern Junior College’s Sam Eckhart, of Parma, Idaho, at 1:10 to advance to the semi-final bout. Leading 7-2 in that match, Karst then moved to the final bout following a medical forfeit of Air Force’s Garrett O’Shea, of Butler, New Jersey.

The performance earned Karst RMAC Wrestler of the Week.

Wrestling above his usual weight class, CSC’s Wade French, junior of Heriman, Utah, took fourth-place in the Elite bracket, earning three wins and taking two losses. According to Hunter, French’s weight descent plan doesn’t allow him to hit his planned 197-pounds until November 17.

“He gave up a lot of weight and still wrestled well,” Hunter said.

Wrestling in the 285-pound class, French was just one bout away from an appearance in the

finals, but lost an 11-7 decision to semi-finals opponent Brian Andrews, of Grapevine, Texas.

In the Amateur bracket of the open, Kodiak French, senior of Wright, Wyoming, was pinned

by Colorado State University-Pueblo’s Aaron Benton, Yuba City, California, in the round of 16. Kodiak, who finished with a 3-2 record at the open, then pinned two opponents, before himself being pinned second consolation of eight round.

Teammate Steven Lahnert, sohomore of Cheyenne, Wyoming also made it to the consolation of eight round.

Chadron’s next action comes at their own Black/Cardinal Classic, Thursday.

The Classic could serve to determine final roster decisions for the team before they face a tough opponent in St. Cloud State University, November 15.

Eagles drop Exhibition Nicole Lartey Reporter The Chadron State men’s basketball team lost 76-59, Thursday, in an exhibition game with Weber State University in Ogden, Utah.

The Wildcats of Weber State, a NCAA Division I team, took advantage of a slow start by Chadron, jumping out to a 13-2 lead before the Eagles began to respond by closing the gap to 15-9 with about eight minutes remaining in the half. Weber, would go into halftime with a 30-21 lead.

About midway through the second half, Chadron’s Michael Sparks, junior of Denver, sank a 3-pointer, and assisted on a layup to Diontae Champion, senior of Pearl, Mississippi, to make it 44-38 in favor of Weber. The Eagles were unable to stop a steady stream of points by the Wildcats, falling behind by as much as 20 points throughout the remainder of the game.

According to the Weber State Athletic Communications, the heavily favored Wildcats entered the 2018 season coming off a 20-11 record in 2017 with their third-consecutive 20-win season, and have

been selected to finish second in the Big Sky Conference in pre-season polls.

The Wildcats were led by 6-foot-1-inch guard Jerrick Harding, junior of Wichita, Kansas, who hit six of 15 field goals, and tallied one 3-pointer. Weber state hit 51.1 percent of their field goals and sank 26 of 34 attempts from the free-throw line.

Champion led the Eagles by scoring with 14 points from four of eight attempted field goals. Teammate Charles Gavin, a senior of Denver, contributed 10 points to the Chadron effort, hitting four of seven field goals. Gavin was a perfect 2-2 from the line.

Jeremy Ruffin, senior of Chicago, who came to Chadron State via Western Nebraska Community College, in Scottsbluff, led the team with eight rebounds. Champion was the Eagles’ next best in the category with seven defensive rebounds.

The Eagles’ regular season begins this Friday when the team hosts Texas A&M International, at the Chicoine Center. Saturday, the Texas theme continues as the Eagles face Texas A&M – Kingsville, also at the Chicoine Center. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. for both Friday and Saturday's games.

The CSC women were 13th of 15, and the men 15th of 16, Saturday, at the RMAC Championships in Denver.

Chadron was without top runner Sheldon Curley, who Head Cross Country Coach Scott Foley says developed shin issues following the Roadrunner Invite. According to Foley, though Curley could have run, the decision was made to favor Curley’s long-term health.

“It was a good opportunity for our young team to get experience,” Foley said, “but it definitely exposed our lack of depth.”

Given the men’s youth, Foley said his team lacked the depth to have runners step up to fill top roles when faced with injuries.

Of the three freshman leading the Eagles men, none were faster than Michael Jaso, of Yuma, Arizona, who took 73rd with a time of 27 minutes 24.4 seconds. Teammate Jesse Jaramillo, of Scottsbluff, was the next-best finisher at 104th with a time of 28 minutes, 28.9 seconds. Zen Petrosius, of Seward, Arkansas, took 119th, completing the race in 30 minutes, 5.7 seconds.

Rounding out the Eagles’ top-five were sophomores Trevor Link, of Fort Morgan, Colorado, in 123rd with a time of 31 minutes, 6.1 seconds and Tristen Old Horse, of

Hot Springs, South Dakota, in 126th finishing in 32 minutes, 50.2 seconds.

Senior Alyse Henry, junior of Rock Springs, Wyoming, was the Eagles top finisher, completing the race in 24 minutes 16.7 seconds to take 59th place in a field of 128 runners. Savannah Silbaugh, junior of Upton, Wyoming, was the Eagles’ next-best finisher at 67th place with a time of 24 minutes, 37.4 seconds.

The Chadron State women’s top-five finishers is filled by sophomores Madison Watson, of Mitchell, Emma Willadsen, of Eaton, Colorado, and Catherine Orban, of Osage, Wyoming. Watson, 76th, completed the race in 24 minutes, 47.1 seconds; Willadsen, 94th, had a time of 25 minutes, 43.2 seconds; and Orban, 104th, finished in 26 minutes, 2.4 seconds.

The CSC season has already felt the effects of the NCAA Division II’s festival year, an event that comes around every four years and combines the championships of all minor fall sports in one location at one time.

The festival works to create a sort of Olympic atmosphere, but can cause headaches for Cross Country teams because meets are pushed farther into the calendar year than is typical.

The team travels next to the NCAA South Central Region Championships, Nov. 17, in Denver, where they'll attempt to qualify for NCAA Championships in December.

Eagles end season with losses to Metro State Ashley Jackson Reporter The Chadron State Eagles volleyball team brought its season to a close this past weekend in two matches against Metropolitan State University of Denver.

The Roadrunners swept both matches, defeating Chadron 25-21, 25-18, 25-18, Friday, and 25-14, 25-21, 25-16, Thursday.

Chadron’s hopes of avenging their Thursday night loss waned as they fell behind 10-2 early in the first set, but the Eagles battled back to tie the set at 16-16 on the back of a four-point streak.

The Eagles were able to keep things close through the tail end of the match. Having pulled ahead 21-20, the Roadrunners scored three-straight, eventually winning the set 25-21. The set was the closest the Eagles came to a win in the match.

Brooke Gardner, junior of Princeville, Illinois, led the team with eight kills and Aracely Hernandez, freshman of Greeley, Colorado, earned seven. The Eagles

had a total of 29 kills and hit just .099 in the match.

Thursday, during the second of three sets, the Eagles, behind one set already, were again able to keep things close, tying the match six times. With the score 19-19, Metro State would pull ahead for the final time, ending the set with a three-point streak to 25-21.

Hernandez led the Eagles with nine kills in the match while Gardner had eight. The Eagles ended the night with 25 kills while hitting .058.

Madison Webb, senior of Loveland, Colorado, had 23 assists.

The Eagles finish their season 8-19 overall record and 6-12 in conference.

Seniors Dominika Senkerikova, of Uhersky Brod, Czech Republic; Madison Webb, of Loveland, Colorado; Mickey Trimble, of Platte City, Missouri; and Megan Chintala, of Fleming, Colorado, graduate from the team this season.

Wednesday, Ashton Burditt, junior of Spearfish, received Second Team All-Conference honors. Webb received All-Conference Honorable Mention, finishing as CSC's most prolific setter.

Banquet brings hunger issues to light Chase Vialpando Reporter The CA 239 Event Planning and Leadership class hosted the fourth annual CSC Oxfam Hunger banquet, Thursday, in the Ballroom.

This student-organized event brings awareness to poverty issues on the global, regional and local scales. Upon arrival, guests lined up to turn in non-perishable food items for the food pantry at the Immanuel Lutheran Church.

Individuals were then prompted to draw a slip of paper at random. On these slips were imaginary financial scenarios complete with names, outlining if a guest would be dining in the lower, middle or high-income section.

Libby Uhing, principal of Chadron Primary School, spoke specifically about local and regional poverty issues. She discussed the disadvantage poverty-stricken children have and the efforts her school has in place to help feed children.

Jake Geil, 22, a criminal justice major from Casper, Wyoming, helped organize the event.

“It really opens your eyes to not only hunger around the world, but here locally,” Geil said.

CSC Memorial Hall hosts high school students for Art Day Sharaya Toof Reporter Chadron State College’s annual Art Day was held in Memorial Hall, Monday.

Art Day is held for high school students in the surrounding area who have an interest in art. It gives them the chance to take classes from CSC students and staff.

Students attend a total of three courses throughout the day, with courses being offered in graphic design, drawing, ceramics, printmaking, photography, crafts, mixed me-

dia and pictograph scramble.

About 150 students were in attendance from 17 different high schools in the surrounding area.

“It’s probably one of our biggest recruiting tools,” Mary Donahue, CSC Art Professor, said. “They got to get to see what it’s like to be in college, with the art studios, and some of the things they might be doing, and to get them interested in different mediums of art."

When the students first arrive, they receive a name tag with a certain color on it that determines which courses they will be

attending depending on which color group they are placed in.

Many high school students find out about Art Day through their art teachers at their schools.

“I want to major in graphic design when I go to college so, I thought it would be good to come here.” Margaret Hoff, a junior of Alliance High School said.

“I want to get a bachelor’s degree in Digital Art Animation so, I thought it would be a good idea to come here," Reese Megli, a junior from Alliance High School, said. "The

The prizes included a dummy table set that allows a person to rope on a table, a small kid’s dummy set that allows you to rope inside, hats, coffee cups and chocolate.

Shantelle Roy, 21, senior of Scotia, hosted the event.

About 39 students signed into the event, but according to Roy, roughly 45-50 came.

The event started at 7 p.m. for teams and individuals to practice roping. Students who had never roped before were able to participate and learn before the competition began.

During this time, snacks consisting of puppy chow, cookies and drinks were offered to those who attended.

The budget for the event was around $430, but Roy only spent about $300.

“If I can do it, anyone can,” Tin Huynh, 20, sophomore of Los Angeles, said. “I’m just here to have fun.”

The roping competition started at 8 p.m..

Each team consisted of two members, with one member acting as the header and the other as a heeler. The header ropes the head and the heeler ropes the feet.

The competition consisted of competitors roping a dummy that was in the shape of a bull. The header would rope first, spin the bull around causing the legs to kick back, and the heeler would rope the hind legs.

To make this even more difficult, the dummy was on wheels and pushed across the basketball court.

“I wanted to make a difference for this college. I didn’t think there was enough [agriculture] opportunities for students to be a part of, so this is one of the events that I thought of to get some more of our community spirit in,” Roy said.

“Art day is a great team effort by our art faculty, Laura Bentz, Trudy Denham and I, and our office assistant Jessica Humphrey and all of our art students,” Donahue said.

Students play Wheel of Fortune Chessa Parker Reporter Three students won big prizes at the RLA Wheel of Fortune Event at 8 p.m., Friday, in the Hub. Kelsey Crock, freshman of Cheyenne, Wyoming, won a mini Christmas tree.

Chris Wright, junior of Alliance, won a coffee maker. Travis Millikan, junior of Norfolk, won a heated blanket.

Multiple students won smaller prizes, which included a bluetooth speaker, a DVD, a pots and pans set and more, throughout the night when their names were called from a sign-in sheet.

Channing Jons, assistant director of residence life, was the one who had the idea for the event.

According to Jons, 21 students attended the event.

The game night was based off the popular television show Wheel of Fortune.

The students played much like the show except first, second and third place received tickets as a reward. The tickets could be placed in different baskets depending on which large prize the winners were hoping they could win.

At the end of the night, names were drawn and the larger prizes were handed out. Along with prizes, students were offered a platter of crackers, cheeses and different types of meat with a variety of pop to snack on.

Jons created 80 individual puzzles for students to solve, made the wheel with all the dollar amounts and picked out the prizes to be won.

“I was trying to think of games that students would be interested in, and then, I remembered that, when I was in high school, me and my mom would watch [Wheel of Fortune] after school, and so, I thought maybe other people did, too,” Jons said.

According to Jons, the typical budget for assistant directors is about $500, but he used a little under half of that, which mainly came from the prizes.

Concert series concludes with solo and duet performances Donica Enevoldsen Reporter Pianists performed the two final concerts of the Debussy Project, this past weekend in the Memorial Hall Auditorium, in celebration of the centennial of Claude Debussy's death.

Brooks Hafey, assistant professor of music, performed the solo piano work of Debussy in a fifth and final solo concert, Friday.

Bobby Pace, CSC accompanist, and guest artist Nicole L. Johnson of Deltona, Florida performed Debussy’s works written for four-hands, Saturday.

Both concerts were part of a seven-concert project celebrating the life and work of

Claude Debussy. Debussy was a prominent musician during the late 19th and early 20th century and is considered one of the most important composers of the Impressionist era.

Many of the pieces Hafey has performed throughout the Debussy Project weren’t new to him, he said much of the music he has been playing since he was a young boy.

His years of experience showed in his performance as his hands skillfully moved across the ivory keys creating sounds bursting with musical artistry.

Friday night’s program closed with Debussy’s Etudes which are among the most pianistically and musically challenging the composer wrote.

final piece, was the most challenging because it was at the end of a long program and requires a lot of energy because of the strenuous physical requirement of the piece.

In Saturday’s performance, Pace and Johnson worked together in harmony, sharing a wordless communication to create a balanced and united sound.

Pace and Johnson met about 11 years ago while studying music at Stetson University and have been good friends ever since.

Johnson currently maintains a teaching studio in Deltona and is an Adjunct Professor of Music at Stetson University.

The pair had performed piano duets together while in college, including Debussy’s

Petite Suit, which they performed Saturday.

Preparing for a duo concert can be challenging when your duet partner lives on the other side of the country, but Pace said working on the duets involved lots of independent practice.

The duo only had a few days to practice the duets together before their concert Saturday, but the two pianists showed their talent by creating unified sound and music.

This weekend, the music department will perform two concerts.

Wind Symphony & Community Band will be performing tomorrow, at 7 p.m. in the Memorial Hall Auditorium, and Concert Choir and Community Chorus will be performing Sunday, at 3 p.m. in the Chadron Arts Center.

The Pre-Vet Club, RLA, NOCS, the Collegiate Farm Bureau, Ag Club and Wildlife Club all came together to host Boot Scootin’ in the Barnyard, Sunday, in the Student Center Ballroom.

“Every Sunday night we host a dance at the Arts Center from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m." Quinton Shaw, junior of Bassett and vice president of Night of Country Swing (NOCS),

said. "It’s open to anyone who wants to come and the nice thing about it is, we don’t care what level you are, we’ll teach you from nothing.”

There were more than 70 students in attendance.

“We decided to do this event to get our name out there a little bit,” he said.

Sarah Stangle, junior of Gordon, said, “This is such an accepting environment and you’ll go away knowing that you made some lifelong friends.”

Stangle also said that, because

it is an accepting environment, it makes it easier for inexperienced dancers to learn.

This is the second on-campus event that NOCS has co-hosted.

Josh Harnish, senior of Scottsbluff, said that he liked having this event on-campus rather than off-campus because it was easier for him to get to an on-campus event rather than when they usually host it at the Arts Center.

Shaw said that NOCS would like to bring this event back to campus again.
