Senate allocates $5,500 to Chi Alpha, Revive for Christian concert Senate approves measure on heels of public forum Justine Stone News Editor

Chi Alpha and Revive have been allocated $5,500 for the Small Town American Tour concert they are hosting Wednesday, Oct. 14 with only three senators abstaining from the vote and the rest voting yes.

The four bands that will be performing at CSC are Fireflight, Seventh Day Slumber, Shonlock, and Scarlet White.

The total amount needed for this concert is $9,000. Chi Alpha and Revive are providing $3,500 of the costs and the rest has now been allocated to them to cover the remaining costs.

Chi Alpha and Revive began working on this during the summer and could not directly bring the information to Student Senate and CAB, but it was noted that they could have emailed the presidents of Senate and CAB or they could have begun planning earlier. Although there were some concerns with Chi Alpha and Revive putting the concert on the calendar before having the money for it, senators discussed how they could make a decision for this situation then set a policy in place for similar situations in the future. This policy will not have to be identical to what Senate decided for this concert.

Senator Curtis Stevens explained that it was in the best interest of the students to support the concert. He explained that in the music industry, if we sign the bands for a gig and then cancel on them, they might not want to come back in the future. The cancelation could also affect whether or not other bands will want to sign a gig with the college.

Senator Mauro Ovando and Senator Syerra Wycoff-Bagshaw both said that their constituents have informed them that they are looking forward to attending the concert.

Senator Chelsea Evans mentioned that the community does a lot for our institution and students so this concert, which is free to the students and the community, would be a great way to give back to them. It is not often that the community has the chance to attend a free event or activity on campus.

After $1,300 was allocated for the laser tag event and $2,000 for free movie night, there is $124,642.61 in unallocated funds before the night’s allocations.

Five senators were petitioned onto Student Senate. The new senators and positions are: Lara Portillo—at large; Tate Jensen—at large; Tierra Snyder—at large; Katie Tobin—E.H.P.C.P.S.W.; Kali Ritterbush— E.H.P.C.P.S.W. Michael Hall petitioned to be the High Rise senator but was not approved.

Senator Mayer explained that he was not happy with Hall and didn’t think he should be a senator because of his track record of missing multiple meetings last year. Senator WycoffBagshaw also explained how she believed that

Hall did not accurately represent his constituents during his time as the High Rise senator last year. The High Rise senator position is the last open position on Student Senate.

Two new justices, BriAnn Straub and Draper Sullivan, were approved to be on the court.

There was no discussion between the senators before the voting.

The “Out of the Darkness” suicide awareness walk will be Saturday. Registration begins at 8 a.m. and the three mile walk around town will begin at 9 a.m. Senate allocated $300 for food towards this event. For more information on the walk, you can visit www.AFSP.org.

Senate was allocated $175 for daily Homecoming prizes. The prize will be for the bestdressed student each day during the week of Homecoming. First place each day will receive a $25 gift card from Walmart and second place each day will receive a $10 gift card from Walmart. There will be a selfie contest with a certain hash tag and a judge under the Clock Tower from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. each day.

Stevens brought an issue concerning parking in Memorial Hall to the meeting. Students have gone to him asking if there is anything Senate can do to help create more room for parking. It was brought to everyone’s attention that the dirt area where the West Court Apartments were knocked down has been labeled as commuter parking.

CAB will be going to Senate next week to ask for an allocation of no more than $1,500 for Free Bowling Night.

A budget for the leadership conference that

will be coming to CSC will be brought up at next week’s meeting.

The Wayne State Conference is a conference that a few senators from CSC will attend along with senators from our sister schools, Peru State and Wayne State, to discuss what is happening on each campus. Only two senators have submitted applications to attend but the deadline for them has been extended so the newly appointed senators have a chance to apply.

There will be a fall career fair on Oct. 28.

The companies attending this fair will be seeking interns so it is a great opportunity for students to make connections. Deena Kennell will be asking for a small allocation for this fair.

RLA will be asking for an allocation of no more than $3,000 for a leadership speaker, Marc Mero, to present to students at CSC oat 7 p.m., Oct. 11. He will also being doing a closed leadership presentation at 11 a.m. on Oct. 12.

Mero, a professional wrestler, will speak on various subjects including anti-bullying and establishing healthier relationships. For more information on Mero visit the RLA Facebook page.

The Student Senate advisers emphasized how important it is for students to meet and visit with their academic advisers because they want to help the students. The academic advisers know people in the fields the students are entering and they will help you in the long run.

money in the account that hasn’t yet been spent is $124,475.99. There is $521.96 left in CAB’s account.

CAB approved the allocation of no more than $1,500 for Free Bowl-

ing Night on Nov. 14 and no more than $2,000 for Free Movie Night on Nov. 15.

Homecoming royalty nominee pictures started yesterday and are

Senate hosts short-notice forum

A public forum on Monday, called on short notice and designed to garner student input on whether to fund a Christian concert sponsored by two Christianbased clubs, saw only a few students questioning the concert, nine members of one of the clubs defending it, and some student senators feeling as if they had no choice but to approve the request.

The forum addressed a request of $5,500 from Chi Alpha and Revive, after the two groups teamed up and signed a contract this summer with four Christian bands to appear on campus on Oct. 14.

Students were notified of the 3 p.m., Monday forum via email, time-stamped at 10:12 a.m., Monday, sent from Student Senate President Katrina Hurley.

The two clubs’ request was first presented to the Senate at its Sept. 21 meeting where a vote on the proposal was postponed until its 5 p.m. meeting Monday, just two hours after the forum.

About three hours after the forum, Senate approved the allocation, 16-0, as its last order of business during its regular 5 p.m., Monday meeting. The vote also recorded three abstentions and one senator absent.

However, during the forum there were still questions, particularly the issue of the clubs’ signing the contract in summer, a move that proved unsettling to some senators.

“You put Senate in a position where we almost feel like we have to allocate the money,” Student Senate Vice President of Finance Nathaniel Jones said.

“Otherwise you guys aren’t going to operate the rest of the year. Essentially you haven’t really given us the opportunity to make a fair, well-thought-out decision, and put us in a tough spot where we feel forced to allocate money.”

With Student Senate adviser Susan Schaeffer looking on, one of the five lay students along with the three Senate executive board members, questioned Chi Alpha officers and members about the process of bringing the concert to campus. The only voting senator present was Nathaniel Brown, who also serves as Chi Alpha’s CAB representative.

The main question was why the contract with the bands was signed before Chi Alpha and Revive requested funding from Senate.

Chi Alpha representatives said they consulted CSC’s Conferencing Coordinator Shellie Johns about booking the musicians because she possesses the appropriate knowledge and experience. They said they signed the contract early because they wanted to ensure the bands would be booked here for fall. They said if they had waited, they might have lost the bands until spring, which would then force them to schedule around Galaxy Series performers.

Michael Hall, senior of Broadwater, asked how much the concert cost. Chi Alpha members said the total was $9,000, and that their club and Revive pooled together $3,500 as a deposit.

Following spring’s annual budget hearings, Student Senate approved $8,400 for Chi Alpha and $3,800 for Revive. The two clubs, like most clubs on campus, made requests for annual funding from the Campus Activity Fee Board, which in turn made recommendations to the Senate.

Of the $3,500 deposit, Chi Alpha put up $2,500, Revive, $1,000. After the deposit, and if neither group has spent any more of their respective allocations, Chi Alpha has an estimated $5,900 remaining in its account, Revive $2,800. It was unclear by deadline Wednesday the exact amount remaining in the clubs’ accounts.

The Chadron State College Student Association Constitution bylaws state, “Affiliated student organizations that have exhausted previously allocated funds may submit additional event-funding requests to CAB.” Coy Clark, chief justice, said he would not review Senate’s action unless someone or some group files a valid petition questioning the allocation. To be valid, Senate’s website states, a petition must be signed by three senators or 10 members of the student body.

Chi Alpha members said at the forum that they expect about 700 people­—students and the general public—will attend the concert, which is free.

On Monday, Chi Alpha’s Brown said Johns advised the group that it would be more of a headache to charge the public but not students. Brown added, also on Monday, that fundraising was not allowed. However, at CAB’s Tuesday meeting, Jon Hansen, vice president of enrollment management, marketing and student services, said the two groups could raise funds, but would have to follow all state and federal tax codes.

On the heels of that information, Brown said Wednesday afternoon, the two groups will ask for free-will donations at the door and sell water during the concert.

“Any money made off the event will be put back into the Student Senate Activity Fee,” he said.

Representatives also said they are using the concert to recruit potential students to CSC. They also said that there have been big name country singers on campus and other big concerts, and this concert will appeal to a different demographic.

BRIEFS Study abroad opportunity, May 2016 There will be a justice studies study abroad program to London, Paris, and the Hague, available to students of all majors, on campus and online students, in May 2016. An informational meeting is scheduled for 11 a.m., next Thursday in Old Admin 331. The program can be taken as either three or six credit hours, and three hours can fill the Human Diversity credit of the Essential Studies program. ‘Out of the Darkness’ walk set for Saturday Western Community Health Resources with help from Ann Dockweiler and her intern Jakob Sokol, are organizing an Out of the Darkness Walk in Chadron, Saturday. Registration for the walk begins at 8 a.m., and the walk is set to begin at 9 a.m.

The three-mile walk will begin and end at Wilson Park.

Walkers are welcome to fundraise if they wish but it is free to participate in the walk. Funds raised will be donated to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

From 11 a.m. – 1:30 p.m., today, there will be a table set up in the Student Center for anyone who has questions or who would like to register before the event.

Materials to make posters will be available for those to carry in memory of someone who has been lost to suicide.

Participants are encouraged to walk in teams. Teams are welcome to wear T-shirts, uniforms, etc., to show their support.

Retired Army vet to present at CSC Students in the FYI 169X: Survival Skills 101 course will host Kyle Roberson, supervisor of education at a federal camp at Yankton, South Dakota, who is coming to CSC to present three free sessions for students.

He will tell his story and about his career path. Roberson is retired from the army after 21 years of active and reserve duty. He had assignments as a military firefighter, member of the military police and took several tours as a reserve drill sergeant. Roberson will be presenting at 9:30 – 10:45 a.m., 12:20 – 1:45 p.m., and 7 – 8:30 p.m., today, all in the Student Center Bordeaux and Lakota rooms.

In celebration of hard work, dedication, and un-yielding faith, faculty, current students, alumni, and family all came out to show support and gratitude at the dedication of the Chicoine Events Center on Saturday, in front of the Chicoine Center.

Before the football game a multitude of people showed up to all commend and show appreciation to all who took part in making the Chicoine Center, which at one point was nothing more than a dream, become a reality. Not only was there a ribbon cutting ceremony to go along with the speech, but people were also permitted to walk around the Chicoine Center looking at the locker rooms, training room, and new offices that were just completed this year.

With multiple speakers, including CSC President Randy Rhine and NSCS Chancellor Stan Carpenter, the story was told about how the idea of the Chicoine Center actually became a reality.

Former CSC President Janie Park actually made the dream into a reality by starting funding for the center back in 2011, and once she retired and Rhine stepped in, he picked up where she left off at eventually raising over eight million dollars for the funding. Although, Park did the majority of the funding.

When talking to some of the older people in the crowd, he said that some of them might have coached or even played in Armstrong and said they collectively decided “it was time for a change.”

He then gave some information on the Chicoine Center, things such as with the horseshoe design and two levels it can seat up to 1800 people at any given moment. The Chicoine Center was officially opened to the public on Nov. 5, 2014, and was met with a great reaction by everyone considering the big upgrade from the Armstrong facility, which is now exclusively being used as a strength and conditioning building.

Amid praises, CSC dedicates Rangeland Complex Tayler Saunders Reporter

This weekend’s dedication of the new Rangeland Complex had a large turnout which included students, parents, faculty, staff, and alumni including former track athlete John Sides who is a part of a three generation CSC legacy and members of the Coffee family who financially supported a large amount of the complex.

The Coffee Agricultural Pavilion houses an arena that upon entering Senator Al Davis said “was a pretty different classroom with dirt, animals, and whatever comes out of animals.” There is also a small herd of cattle housed in the complex that are just another one of the many educational

opportunities provided by the new complex.

The other building is a classroom and laboratory facility that will begin hosting classes in the fall 2016. There are two unique labs in the building that allow students to learn more about animals, soils, and grass. There are also plans to move the Cabela’s Taxidermy collection that is currently housed in Burkhiser to the new facility.

CSC President Randy Rhine said it was, “A founding achievement, and there was not a better location for the project.” Because the complex is located “in the middle of a living lab.” He was one of a few people who remarked at the geographical support due to the three different types of ranges located in this part of the state. He also called the complex a “landmark to the college.”

“This is a very unique opportunity,” Board of Trustee member John Chaney said. “I toured the facility when it was halfway finished and although this is not my area of expertise I know there is nothing like it anywhere. It is going to help the state progress.” He was also “impressed with how everyone came together including the state and the donors.”

Student Trustee Mikayla Gallagher commented on the complex’s ability to “attract people from all over to Chadron to have an opportunity to use the unique facility.”

All of the speakers noted that the facilities will provide a unique and advanced learning opportunity for students.

The lab and classroom facility is not yet completely finished but Physical Facilities Project Coordinator Blair Brennan said, “All that is left are small details.”

Bust out your camouflage, Eagles, because we’re going on a bear hunt! Next Monday, Oct. 5 kicks off the start of Chadron State’s Homecoming week. This year’s Homecoming is jam packed with a plethora of activities. Some important dates to remember before Homecoming week officially starts are quickly approaching.

A well-received welcome As editors of The Eagle, we occasionally get invitations to special dinners that are happening on campus. Almost every time the Board of Trustees comes to campus, an invitation to a dinner arrives in the newsroom, and every time we get one, we are excited to go.

We appreciate the opportunity to eat the great food provided. However, sometimes we feel a little out of our element because we have few acquittances that are in attendance.

At every meal there is an hour reception before the meal and normally at these receptions, the two people invited from The Eagle are less involved with the other guests and sometimes it leaves us feeling awkward and unwanted.

Regardless, both parties are at fault. We may not be taking the initiative to mingle with the other guests, and they have plenty of people to interact with and do not always recognize our presence.

At most of these events, we stick with the other students who are invited, which usually means Student Senate members and CAB members.

This last Friday was a different story though.

Shortly after arriving at the reception in the Chicoine Event Center, we realized we were the only students that had taken up the invitation. Worried that we were going to feel more out of place than at other dinners, we hit the appetizers table to keep ourselves

busy. After getting something to snack on, we were approached by an older couple, who wanted nothing more than to just talk.

They asked who we were, where we were from, and general questions about the college and The Eagle.

After the couple left, we took a tour of the facility and as we were walking around with other dinner guests, we were met with smiles and direct eye contact.

We were approached yet again by another friendly alum who continued to talk to us and ask questions until it was time to find a seat for the dinner.

While deciding where to sit, we were concerned we would be sitting by ourselves for the night, realizing we didn’t know many other people attending the dinner.

After finding an empty table and sitting for a short two minutes, we were approached by three wonderful ladies who asked if they could join us for the meal.

Our table was then filled when Head Men’s Basketball Coach Brett Bargen and his wife joined our table.

During the meal, we were encouraged to be a part of the table conversation and felt welcomed in every way.

The dinner hosted by the CSC Foundation for alumni and trustees was the most welcoming dinner members of The Eagle have attended in a while, and we are sincerely thankful for the invitation and the enjoyable evening.

Letter to the Editor Dear Editor, As a student senator at large, I try to represent the student body to my greatest capacity. In the most recent decision made by Student Senate, regarding Chi Alpha’s concert that was granted allocation, I’ve heard a lot of positive opinions from the student body as a whole.

However, in this opinion, I wanted to address the negative backlash this decision has been receiving. Specifically, one of the main critiques of this decision is that the bands being brought in are that of religious affiliation, and that by allocating funds

towards this event Senate has set a precedent of preference. I would like to stress that this is entirely not the case; while the bands are religiously affiliated, I would like to point out that the club the event is being sponsored through is, by nature, religious.

Regardless, I’ve spoken to numerous students that were excited for the concert even without being of the same religious denomination; after all, it is not often that such high profile bands are brought into Chadron State College.

Furthermore, had Student Senate voted against the concert simply for the reason of the bands being reli-

giously affiliated, the decision would set an even more dangerous precedent of being prejudiced towards a certain religion.

If we, as senators, had voted for, or against, the concert in accordance to religious preference, that would be entirely wrong. I can speak in full confidence that our decision was not derived out of any religious background, but rather from listening to our constituents and sharing in their excitement for an event on campus.

SENATESPEAKS A word from the Student Senate President This week in Senate we swore in five new members: Lara Portillo, Tate Jensen, and Tierra Snyder as senators at large; and Katie Tobin and Kali Ritterbush as E.H.P.C.P.S.W. senators. Senate also swore in two Associate Justices for the Constitutional Court: BriAnn Straub and Draper Sullivan.

Senate only has one open position: senator of High Rise.

At our meeting we allocated funds to have first and second place prizes for best dressed each day of homecoming week. I encourage all students to participate to show their school spirit!

Senate also allocated funds for Chi Alpha to host a large concert on campus. This issue was brought to Senate last week. Chi Alpha needed more funds due to the band they actually wanted to host being on tour. Since the band was on tour, they could not sign them without adding the others to the concert as well.

Senate this year has initiated a policy where if there are any requests for funds $5,000 and over we will host an open forum for students and staff to come and voice their questions and concerns. The forum was Monday and had a decent turnout.

During Senate, the senators had a lengthy discussion about this matter. They did end up voting to allocate the full amount to Chi Alpha. Senators then went into discussion about making a policy so that if an issue like this comes up during the summer months and a club cannot bring it directly to Senate, there will be a way to still communicate with the executive board and advisers on the matter. I will keep you all updated on any changes to Senate policies.

Senate then ended the meeting with allocating no more than $300 for the Suicide Awareness Walk this weekend for granola bars and snacks.

Volleyball Standings

For the first time in Jay Long’s coaching career at CSC, the Eagles lost their home opener at Elliott Field, Saturday, to the Colorado Mesa University Mavericks, 23-13.

The Eagles, 1-3, once again failed to produce a solid offensive performance in their second straight conference loss. The ground game wasn’t able to break through like in previous games, only rushing for 109 yards off 33 attempts. The rushing attack was led by Derek Jackson, sophomore of Pueblo West, Colorado. CSC also had four fumbles in the game, losing three of them.

Redshirt freshman TD Stein, of Chadron, completed nine of 27 passes for 163 yards and an interception. The longest play of the game was a 63 yard completion to Marcus Brown, junior of Colorado Springs, Colorado. Stein is averaging 162 yards per game through the air, with one touchdown pass and seven interceptions. Alex Ferdinand, senior kicker of Rapid City, South Dakota, put the only offensive points on the board for CSC. He capped off a 73-yard drive with a 29-yard field goal, and a 53-yard drive with a 35yard field goal.

The defense for the Eagles kept the game interesting, with the only touchdown coming from Conor Casey, senior of Rapid City, South Dakota, who scooped up a blocked punt from Collin Eisenman, sophomore of Sheridan, Wyoming, and returned it for a touchdown. All around, the defense proved to be a powerhouse, holding the Mavs to 262 total yards of offense, only 69 of them through the air.

“We had a great game plan going in,” Cole Montgomery, senior of Casper, Wyoming, said.

“The coaches broke down game after game and were able to give us some really good tendencies. We knew exactly what route combos they were going to run and everyone played pretty disciplined.”

Novak’s efforts during last week’s rodeo at Sheridan College helped the men’s team earn first place. He won all-around cowboy honors with 165 points. He also earned second place in tie down roping. In his sophomore season, Novak is proving to be a top competitor in the region.

Chrisman helped the Eagles take down the Westminster Griffins with 10 kills. Defensively, she stacked up six blocks, which led the team.

During the loss against Colorado Mesa, Chrisman tallied three blocks. As a true freshman, KENZIE CHRISMAN Chrisman will be a key player this season.

The Chadron State College Rodeo team had an outstanding performance at Sheridan College last weekend. The men won the team title with a total of 615 points and the women landing fourth with 210 points.

Some of those outstanding performances included Prestyn Novak, sophomore of Newell, South Dakota, who placed first for men all-around with 165 points and took second in tie down roping with times of 11.4 seconds and 11.6; Rolly Fortune, senior of Interior, South Dakota, who took third in tie down roping with a time that was only five tenths of a second slower than Novak’s.

“This is the best start our team has ever had,” Nate McFadden, senior of Dunning, said. “We all believe we can be taking a men’s and women’s team to the college finals at the end of the season. We just have to keep working hard and trusting in our abilities.”

The Eagles intercepted Mesa quarterback Sean Rubalcaba, junior of Grand Junction, Colorado, twice, one from senior linebacker Clay Cundall, of Greybull, Wyoming, and the other from Brian Wood, junior of Stockton, California. Penalties once again hurt the Eagles, accumulating 12 flags for 110 yards. CSC now has 43 penalties on the year for a total of 384 yards.

Western State is currently ranked last in the RMAC with an overall record of 0-4, 0-2 in conference.

Western quarterback Brett Arrivey, junior of Woodinville, Washington, threw for 238 yards and three touchdowns against Adams State University. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.

Eagles soar over Griffins Jay Feltson Reporter Last weekend the Eagles’ volleyball team traveled to Grand Junction, Colorado, and Salt Lake City, to take on the Colorado Mesa University Mavericks and the Westminster College Griffins, respectively.

Against the Mavericks, the Eagles were led offensively by Rudy Leasau, junior of LaMesa, California, who had a total of 14 kills in the three set match-up.

Alexis Farris, sophomore of Blair, also came through with a big play when she served up an ace to keep the Eagles alive offensively. Madison Webb, a true freshman of Loveland, Colorado, was also a key contributor on offensive chipping in for a team high 27 assists that night.

On the defensive side, the Eagles saw Chloe Guillen, sophomore of San Antonio, give her all by tallying up 13 digs in an effort to keep the Eagles sound on defense. The Eagles saw another freshman make a statement that night, Kenzie Chrisman, true freshman of Sterling, Colorado, who gave the Eagles a much needed lift on defense with a total of three blocks. In the end, the Mavericks were just too much for the Eagles who ended up losing in three straight sets, all by less than three points.

On Saturday, trying to rebound from a loss, the Eagles traveled to Salt Lake City, to face off against the Westminster Griffins. The Eagles came out in full at-

tack against the Griffins and never looked back, winning almost every offensive column. The Eagles once again saw good play out of Chrisman, this time collecting a total of 10 kills, and she tied with Gabby Varela, sophomore of Dorado, Puerto Rico, for the most kills this game. Sierra Winkle, freshman of Tucson, Arizona, collected an impressive two aces during the three-set match.

Defensively, Varela played a key role collecting a total of 16 digs, Chrisman again played above the net by collecting a team-high six blocks. Both Chrisman and Varela played major parts in the effort to make sure the Eagles pulled out a victory and salvage the weekend. The Eagles were more efficient than the Griffins on both sides of the ball and this showed when they pulled off an impressive weekend winning the match, 3-0.

“It felt good to get the win on Saturday,” Farris said. “We aren’t content with being 2-2 in conference, but it does keep us in the top eight of the RMAC, which was team goal going into the season.

“We wanted to make sure we came out of the first conference showdown against them (Westminster) with a win,” Farris said.

The Eagles are set to face the Colorado State University-Pueblo ThunderWolves, Friday, and the Western State Colorado University Mountaineers, Saturday, at home in the Chioine Center at 7 p.m. both days.

Rational behind the deer snort It’s that all too familiar sound that whitetail hunters will hear more than a handful of times in their life. The sound of a deer snort directed right at you. The good news is that you probably got to see a deer. The bad news is that deer is now running in the other direction with a white flag waving in the air. It does not matter how advanced of a hunter you are, it will happen at some point.

For those that have never heard a deer “snort” it can be hard to explain. Some call it snorting or refer to it as a deer blowing. In the past decade I have spent equal time hunting white-tailed deer and mule deer, white-tailed deer seem to use this vocalization frequently since they are a highly vocalized species. The problem with this noise is that you do not want it to happen. These noises are considered alarm or distress calls. A well put together vocalization guide by Whitetails Unlimited outlines three reasons white-tailed deer use these sounds. First, the noise warns all deer that something is radically wrong. Second, the sneeze cleans the nasal passages, and helps the deer sniff the air for what seems to be wrong. Third, they will use it in hopes of startling a predator into revealing its location or leaving the area. They say blows are drawnout whooshes repeated several times. Snorts are single, very short, explosive sounds given as the deer turns to run.

For me it happened just the other week. I walked about a mile to my favorite hunting spot behind a small beat up cedar tree. I was well hidden with tall weeds at my back. Normally I will sit down to work on homework while I wait for dusk when the deer are most active. I usually stand up every ten minutes to check for deer in the area. A few seconds after I stood up I heard that hope shattering noise toward my back. I look over to see two doe running away in a hurry. They had snuck in behind my back and saw the sudden movement when I stood up. It caught them off guard which alerted them to danger. It wasn’t the first and won’t be the last time it happens to me.

To combat this happening to you just go back to the basics of hunting. Be quiet, move slowly, and pay attention at all times. Before you start daydreaming of that big buck, don’t forget it begins with the little things.

try’ column we incorrectly stated that CSC President Randy Rhine was a participant in the Pine Ridge Turkey Hunt. We apologize for our errors.

This weekend, the CSC cross country teams will travel to Fayetteville, Arkansas, to compete in the Chile Pepper Cross Country Festival.

As one of the largest invitationals in the nation, the festival’s roots sit close to home to a recognizable member of CSC’s administration—CSC President Randy Rhine.

In 1988, Rhine, and his best friend Joe Fennel, the “founding fathers” came up with the idea of putting together a cross country festival after running a marathon in Duluth, Minnesota.

“The whole town gets behind it,” Rhine said. “It’s a huge festival atmosphere, with a carnival, and a marathon. Volunteers are on a wait list for years to be able to work in the race.”

On the way back from the festival, Rhine and Fennel started talking about setting up a cross country

race. Then one day while training with Kelly O’Meara, a local cross country coach, they found out that at the time, his team’s budget was $100. That’s when they got the idea to make it a fundraiser.

“We all had a role in fundraising and marketing,” Rhine said. “After probably three or four years we incorporated as a non-profit, for business reasons and insurance reasons.”

Rhine said that there were a few challenges when setting up the race, including weather.

“We actually ran it in May to begin with,” Rhine said. “It’s pretty rainy down there. The weather made everything else a challenge as well, with logistics, crowd management, and traffic.”

Rhine also said that the first year there were only about 250 participants, the year after that it doubled.

“We outgrew our parking pretty quickly,” Rhine said. “Once we added the collegiate and high school events

it really mushroomed. Coping with the growth was a pretty big challenge.”

The Chile Pepper Cross Country Festival fundraises for local high school cross country teams. Rhine said that on the registration form there would be a box of what school they wanted to support and after all the bills were paid off, they would distribute the money according to percentages on the forms. Over $400,000 has been donated to high schools in the northwest Arkansas region. Last year alone, $46,000 was donated.

Rhine also said that he is excited to see CSC participate in the invite, even though the coaches knew about the race well before he got to Chadron.

“I think it’s great that we brought our cross country team back,” Rhine said. “I’m excited that they want to go down there and compete. It’s a really good meet for them to get a gauge of how they stack up against national competition.”

Alumni return for light-hearted competition Tayler Saunders Reporter Last Saturday’s Alumni Softball game wrapped up in a 3-3 tie. The event took place following the football game and served as a fundraiser for breast cancer. The current softball team played against former CSC softball players in a scrimmage. The current team was thrown fast-pitched balls from former pitcher Kylee Polsley. The Alumni team was served slow pitch balls by current outfielder Shea Graham, senior of Colorado Springs, Colorado.

The mood was very casual and fun. Head Coach Rob Stack was the official for the game and was caught making some questionable calls to help the Alumni team. The girls who are currently on the team picked out walk up songs specifically for each of the alumni as well as the songs being played between the innings. Most of those songs had a theme of aging to play off the alumni status of the opposing team. Coach Stack thanked fans and alumni at the end of the event. He also invited people to come out and support the team during the spring season, which kicks off at home in March.

A HEALTHY Perspective Columnist

When you are trying to become a healthier person, setting specific goals can be helpful.

In preparation for my ultimate goal of participating in a half marathon next summer, last weekend I joined in the Walking Deadwood Zombie 5k – my very first official 5k.

My training process was fairly simple: I started running. I used an app on my phone to measure out blocks of time for walking and running and gradually increased the time I spent running over the time I spent walking.

Last weekend, race day finally arrived, and we loaded up the van with our passel of crazy competitors and head-

ed to Deadwood.

Since this was a Zombie 5K, at the start of the race we were given belts with three flags attached with Velcro. The zombies try to steal your flags as you run or walk the 5k.

If you make it to the finish line with at least one still attached then you are considered a survivor.

Otherwise you are considered dead.

When you are trying to get involved with fitness activities it is helpful to incorporate your participation into the things you do with your friends.

I was lucky enough to fight off the hordes of the undead with an awesome groups of friends.

While none of us “survived” the race with flags intact (I lost my two of my flags to a zombiefied Thor and the last to a very stubborn young zombie girl) I can’t say I’ve ever had more fun dying.

While my initial plan of running the 3.1 mile distance was impeded by a burgeoning cold, I did run the last 500 yards to the finish line.

Crossing the finish line was great, I can’t wait to run my next 5k and then to complete a half marathon!

This race taught me a number of things. Things don’t go as planned, but that doesn’t mean you quit. Avoid zombie Thor, no matter how cute he was when he was alive. Finally, be fit with your friends.

On Monday, the seniors from the social work department teamed up with the Residence Life Association to put on an event about consent and sexual assault in the Gold Room. The event focused on sexual assault throughout the nation, what to do if you see it, and how to prevent it from happening to you.

This event started at 7 p.m. and lasted about 45 minutes. About 12 people stayed from start to finish, but more flowed in as the time went on. Brittany

Senecal, resident director of High Rise, was the leader of this event. Students and faculty played a family feud type game to test their knowledge on sexual assault and consent.

At the end of the event prizes were given to the winning team, and people were allowed to stick around and hang out afterwards.

“I really enjoyed this program because it was fun competing with friends, but I also learned a lot about sexual assault, different ways to handle it, and how to prevent it from happening,” Kris Boardman, of Gordon, said.

Grammy Award winning singer and two-time VMA Vocalist of the Year Kathy Mattea and her longtime collaborator Bill Cooley graced the audience with an impressive, and sometimes humorous, performance at the first Galaxy Series event of the semester last week in Memorial Hall.

It’s very obvious that Mattea and Cooley are very talented guitarists that love what they do.

One observer commented on their performance saying, “It was fantastic, inspiring, and sad at the same time. That’s how you know it’s good music.”

Mattea started the show by telling the audience about her travels to the panhandle and how she loved the sunset. She then

described with hand gestures how West Virginia, where she’s from, also has a panhandle, and proceeded to flip the audience off, all in good humor of course as everyone thought it was funny.

A genuine storyteller, Mattea kept up the routine of talking to the audience after every song and had everyone laughing and involved in her performance, and worked through technical difficulties with polite humor and grace.

Some of the material performed included songs from Mattea’s album “Calling Me Home” along with compositions from Jean Ritchie, Hazel Dickens and her partner Bill Cooley.

The next Galaxy Series event is at 7 p.m., Oct. 22 in Memorial Hall, and will welcome Jean-Michel Cousteau to speak about how his agricultural education aided him in his experience as an oceanographer.

Ping pong tournament fosters competition Ali Munk Reporter The Pit held a ping-pong tournament Thursday night. Forty-eight students entered the competition and many more gathered around the tables to cheer on their favorite player. Competitors were ready to show off their skills demonstrating they are the best player on campus.

Students packed around five tables and filled the stairs. The first round of the tournament began with a game to 21 and then rounds two and three were played best two out of three. Round after round players were eliminated only to reveal the best of the best.

Players looked eye-to-eye as they agreed on a pong toss to see who started with the serve. Game faces were on all night, as everyone knew the competition would be fierce.

“Everyone in the quarter finals was skilled,” Neil Lin, junior of Tai-

chung, Taiwan, said.

Lin embraced his background as he fought for the championship title against sophomore Evan Smith, of Gillette, Wyoming. It was a close game as both players had their adrenaline rushing and were dripping in sweat from the intensity.

It was Lin, who took the first game, then Smith took the second game and Lin won the third and final game to secure first place earning a $50 gift card to Walmart.

Not only did Lin win this year’s ping-pong tournament, but he has also brought home the championship title three times before that. Lots of practice, five years of experience and a power nap is all Lin needed to prepare for this tournament.

In a tremendous show of good sportsmanship, this tournament concluded with a group photo of the quarterfinalists. Congratulations were shared by each on a tournament well played.

The power of print trumps movie magic Teri Robinson Photo Editor

It is becoming a trend in today’s culture to make bestselling books into movies, and while true fans of those books normally rejoice when their favorite book comes to life, some are left empty when the movie doesn’t live up to the expectations the reader had envisioned the story.

When it comes to the book “Insurgent,” the second book in the Divergent series, I was unimpressed with how the movie portrayed the book.

Those who have not read the book or seen the movie, and wish to, there may be spoilers coming. I like to think I have an imaginative mind and when I read a book, whatever it may be, the characters, location, and even my senses are enhanced in my mind as I read.

In the first book, “Divergent,” the main character Tris comes from one of five factions-Abnegation, or the selfless ones.

The city has been divided into factions to keep order and give each person a purpose in the community. Once the children in the city reach a certain age they are each given a test to help them decide what faction to permanently be a part of; the one they were born into or a new one.

The factions include Dauntless, Amity, Erudite, Abnegation, and Candor. Tris’ test comes back inconclusive and she decides to choose Dauntless as her new home. As she goes through training and eventually becomes a permanent member of Dauntless, Tris discovers why her test did not give her one faction-she was Divergent.

Divergent were feared and killed in the city and only one other person that Tris knew was Divergent was Four.

“Insurgent” begins with Tris, Four, Peter, Caleb-Tris’ brother, and Marcus-Four’s father, on the train to the fence that closes the city off from the outside world.

Both are excellent productions in their own way, but the reproduction of the books into movies falls short.

Traveling exhibit shows censorship displays Anastasia Zbarazhskaya Reporter

An examination of censorship worldwide from the 13th century to present is the heart of a traveling exhibit from The Humanities Texas, an affiliate of the National endowment for the Humanities, which opened Aug. 24 and runs through Oct. 16 at the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center showcase.

Titled, “The Bonfire of Liberties: Censorship of the Humanities,” the exhibit features display panels with quotes, images, and informative passages about the period of censorship each exhibit displays. One example on display of censorship in the Americas was a statement from Tlacaele, adviser to Aztec Emperor Montezuma, who said, “It is not fitting that all people should know these stories. Those who are subject, the people, will be spoiled and the land will be twisted.”

According to a press release posted on a CSC website, “‘The Bonfire of Liberties’ also examines the struggle between those who want to censor difficult, controversial and

revolutionary material from sensitive viewers and those who want to protect the freedoms of all people to read, view, and think for themselves.”

The press release also states that topics covered by the exhibit include forms of censorship, public demands for censorship, freedom to read, religious censorship, of philosophy, drama and theatre, as well as literature, children’s books, art and art history, world; and American history and the history of women and minorities. The exhibit also shows censorship of the Bible, Shakespeare and Huckleberry Finn.

The exhibit explains that censors justified their acts of censorship to protect childhood innocence and common decency.

That reasoning is used today, even in the United States, by those who wish to silence artists, musicians or publishers who produce materials that potential censors oppose. In some cases, books and articles published in 20th century America were censored because of religious heresy or political thoughts “which could leave believers into error and eternal damnation,” one exhibit passage states.

One example, also according to the exhibit, involved high school students in Wasco, California, who were not allowed to read John Gardner’s novel “Grendel” in their Eng-

lish class without a letter of permission from their parents.
