RLA is hosting the annual Pumpkin Carving event from 8-9 p.m., Monday in the Gold Room. Pumpkins and tools will available for students to carve or paint a pumpkin.

Senate, CAB gear up for pink-out game Ashley Swanson Jordyn Hulinsky Managing Editor Sports Editor

Chief Justice Jon Lordino swore in Edna Hall Senator Taylor Osmotherly; Andrews Hall Senator Marci Luton; and Senator of E.S.P.C.H.P.W. Karson Langley at Monday’s meeting.

Osmotherly and Luton were voted in at the last Senate meeting, but were not able to be sworn in until this week. Langley turned in a petition to Lordino a while ago, but also was not able to be voted or sworn in until Monday.

Vice President of Finances Kirby Krogman said there is $129,505.04 in unallocated funds.

Senate Vice President Taylor Strong said there is new furniture in the Student Center lobby. She also said as there are not tall tables to

match the tall chairs, so Senate may have to allocate money to order new tables.

Senate President Dillon Spies said the student leadership conference with Peru and Wayne State Colleges will be Thursday-Sunday. He asked that as many senators as possible attend the conference.

Ten letters were submitted for the leadership conference in Orlando, Florida., Spies said.

Next Monday Senate will announce “who won” to go on the trip.

Student Activities Coordinator Laure Sinn said she was going to go the City Council in hopes of proclaiming November as Native American Month.

Luton and Sinn said shirts were designed for the pink out football game Saturday. Spies will be using the T-shirt gun to shoot T-shirts into the crowd at the game.

Student Trustee Jacob Rissler said there is a tab up on the Senate page on the CSC website where he will post a synopsis of what happened at the

Nebraska State College System board meetings.

CAB’s treasurer’s report announced $7,030 in unallocated funds.

CAB then allocated $500 for the Haunted House.

There were two speakers at the CAB meeting. Karen Snook, member of the Chadron Chamber of Commerce, spoke about the Moonlight Madness event coming up on Halloween. Moonlight Madness is a block party for kids to come trick-ortreat. They also have a penny carnival.

She was asking for volunteers to help with the penny carnival from 4-5:30 p.m., Oct. 31. She said it’s good to dress up because there will be a costume contest for all ages. She also said it’s a good thing to put on a resume.

Snook’s contact number is 308-4324401; Sinn also has Snook’s email address. Snook needs to know by next week if clubs would be willing to help and if they want to set up a table or game for the event. The Chamber of Commerce will provide the candy if clubs come up with a game.

Cutting hair for a cause Uyen Han Reporter CSC students donated money and 74 inches of hair to children during the Cut-A-Thon event Monday.

The donated hair will be sent to Locks of Love where it will be made into wigs for children under 21-years-old who are suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis.

“When I cut it off, it was a little bit frightening. But donating makes me feel really cool that I can give something that was mine to someone who needs it,” Katherine Pulliam, freshman of Atchison, Kansas, said.

CSC Resident Life Association organized the event for the first time with the help of April Blanford, hairdresser at Total Looks Center salon. Students who donated hair or money will receive a free haircut from Total Looks.

Without experience and promotion, the event did not attract many donators compared to other charity events on campus, and because cutting 10 inches of hair was not an easy decision.

However, many students expressed the wish to participate next time.

With students’ participation, RLA also showed the desire to continue the event next year and the coming spring semester. They hope for even more student participation in future events.

The second speaker was Leslie Bargen, development officer from the Chadron State foundation office, spoke about clubs’ fundraising. She said that because the foundation office runs two fundraisers in the community, she asked that clubs don’t request for straight cash when they are doing fundraisers. The only exception is if businesses get advertising for their cash. Bargen also asked that clubs fill out a fundraising form when they are planning a fundraiser. Forms can be obtained in her office, on the second floor of Sparks.

CAB’s Vice Chair of Programming Andy Martin said there was 278 students who showed up to free movie night Sunday, and they had to turn people away because some movies were full.

Stephanie Steele, vice chair of records, said there are still bed sheets that have not been claimed. She said clubs need to get them from the CAB office if they want them or they will be disposed of after next week.

Sinn talked about the pink-out

games. Tuesday night was the pink out volleyball game. Pink bracelets were handed out at the game. Saturday will be the pink out football game. She said the field will be painted and there will be tattoos and shirts handed out. Kickoff is at 1 p.m.

CAB Adviser Deena Kennell talked about the importance of being familiar with the entire Nov. 4 ballot when students go to vote on the pool project. She said students should be aware of what they are voting for so they don’t accidentally contradict themselves with their votes. She also reminded CAB members that Friday is the fall career fair and encouraged students to take advantage of the seasonal job and internship opportunities that will be presented. She said students do not have to dress up but should get out of their “dorm lounge wear.” The fair will be from 10 a.m.–2 p.m. in the Student Center lobby.

“This is the only time in your life that the job comes to you. Any other time, you have to go find the job,” Kennell said.

CSCEA scholarship available to students Applications will be due Nov. 21 to the START office

The 2015 CSCEA Scholarship application is now available to CSC students and due Nov. 21.

The scholarship will award $500 to two students who meet these criteria: 30 plus hours completed at time of application; must be a full time undergraduate student during Spring 2015 semester; working on their first undergraduate degree; and may have not previously received CSCEA scholarship.

Students applying must also submit a completed application, unofficial transcripts, a letter of reference from a faculty member in their major, and a personal essay.

“The EA in the application stands for Education Association. We wanted to keep the application simple for students so they did not think this was just an academic or needs based scholarship,” Tracy Nobling, professor of Justice Studies said.

CSC student Timothy C. Jungquist, 19, was released from Dawes County Jail Oct. 15 after posting a 10 percent of $50,000 bond, following a bond hearing that same day. His original bond was set at 10 percent of $150,000. As of Wednesday, there were no further proceedings in the case.

Jungquist was arrested by Chadron Police Oct. 8 in connection with an alleged first-degree sexual assault in Andrews Hall that reportedly occurred Sunday, Oct. 5, Chadron Police Department and Dawes County Sheriff ’s officials said.

He was arrested after the alleged victim, a female, reported the assault Oct. 7, police stated in a press release. The Eagle does not publish the names of victims or alleged victims of sexual assault.

The Fall 2013 campus directory lists Jungquist as a freshman of Pegram, Tennessee, majoring in Physical Education and Health (K-12). In April, he was sworn in as a Senator-at-Large to the CSC Student Senate. As of Wednesday, Senate Chief Justice Jon Lordino said, “At this moment, I don’t want to comment on it, because we’re still looking into the situation.”

Lordino also said Senate wants to cover all of its bases before making a formal statement to the public.

Jon Hansen, vice president of enrollment management, marketing, and student services, said Wednesday that Jungquist is, “no longer a student at Chadron State College.”

Hansen was unable to comment on the status of Jungquist’s enrollment at CSC under the Family Education Rights Protection Act, or if Jungquist withdrew himself from class or if he was administratively withdrawn.

On Oct. 9, Hansen reaffirmed the college’s position about sexual assault reports.

“The college takes sexual assault and relationship violence very seriously,” Hansen said. “As a community we will continue to educate and be vigilant to prevent these occurrences and promote the reporting of occurrences when they happen. The college will continue to develop education programs that are proactive in this arena.”

Via Alex Helmbrecht, director of college relations, Hansen notified the campus community about the alleged assault by email at 5:57 p.m., Oct. 8.

CSC will continue to cooperate with the Chadron Police Department throughout this investigation.

Eagle Ridge, a $6.2 million building project, is available for tours, and there are still rooms open for students to move into.

The building, landscaping, and pavement are included in that amount. Currently, landscaping and the paving of sidewalks and the parking lot are still in process, but the buildings are complete, according to Dale Grant, vice president of finance.

“The parking lot will not be completely concrete,” Grant said.

Once the sidewalk north of Burkhiser is finished the parking lot will be paved.

A section of the parking lot for the Eagle Ridge buildings will stay dirt and will be located east of Burkhiser off of 12th street, he said.

With the landscaping, swales are being implemented to collect water and used for plants that will be farther from the buildings. Swales are used by farmers and ranchers to collect rain

and snow to save on the cost of watering plants.

The swales are a “low-tech, cutting edge water conservation,” Lucinda Mays, grounds supervisor, said.

Due to the drought this part of the state goes through, swales save on cost and plants.

“We have drought so often, when we were working on the site we looked for ways to collect water that didn’t require machinery,” Mays said.

Engineers helped move land so the swales could be made around Eagle Ridge, and are also being implemented around the Rangeland building.

The plants used for the landscaping are “well adapted to our climate and soil,” according to Mays, and “came from a nursery in Fort Collins, [Colorado].”

Trees, shrubs, and perennials are being planted closer to the buildings while other trees will be planted farther away and serve as wind and snow breakers.

“I’m so impressed with the plants that have come in,” she said.

A local landscaping company is doing the

planting.

“The plants really are well adapted for where we live, and it won’t be long until it fills up,” she said.

Although landscaping and paving is still in progress, rooms are available for students interested to move in.

Rooms are single and cost $2,273 per semester, the same amount as a single in Edna Dormitory.

There are 23 rooms in each of the three buildings with six units per building. Each unit has four rooms except the handicap accessible unit, which has three and is the unit the resident adviser stays in, according to Sherri Simons, housing director.

Issues at the beginning of the semester were with wireless routers and students not being able to connect or stay connected in their rooms, according to Simons.

There are still minor issues IT and Simons are working on.

Heating and cooling units at the start of the semester were also being tweaked since they were new units, but problems have been re-

solved.

Eagle Ridge is more similar to West Court than the dormitories because there is no designated custodian.

Residents have been informed to clean up after themselves and take their trash directly to the dumpsters to help keep Eagle Ridge clean.

“I really appreciate the patience of students who live there,” Simons said.

Once landscaping is done and plants have filled in the area, picnic tables will be brought in for the areas outside between the buildings, according to Simons.

Each building is equipped with a commons area that has a television, seating, sink and counters, and toaster oven; six units, and laundry rooms in the basement.

Outside balconies attached to the top floor of each building can also be used to store bikes or relax.

There are still 26 rooms available for students to move into and those interested may contact Billie Knifong, housing and resident life manager, to set up a tour. Each building has rooms available.

was closed while new carpet was laid.

CSC contracted Morford’s to put in the new carpet, which was chosen by a committee of Student Center directors, according to Shellie Johns, coordinator of conferencing and Student Center building manager.

The upgrade was originally planned for last summer, which is when the carpet in the cafeteria was

replaced, but the carpet for the area around The Pit was on backorder.

The total cost for both carpeting jobs was $54,330, according to Dale Grant, vice president of finance.

Senate should weigh benefits, provide proof to constituents

E

ducators are consistently pressured by the institutions they serve to provide assessments for the work they do. These assessments have two key benefits: the measurements provide evidence that a program works, and the results of these assessments help faculty members argue for their programs’ budgets.

Assessments can also provide administrators with the necessary proof that a community will gain competent graduates in the workforce and that the college will have a return on investment by offering that program.

For example, you can measure the benefit of continuing, let’s say, an all-online business academy by assessing its graduation rate and then examining the programs cost versus the revenue it generates.

However, this cost/benefit logic is not as readily applied when observing the benefits of the difficult-to-assess creative studies such as humanities, art, and music.

This assumption illustrates that assessment is not strictly limited to academic merit, but that assessment also helps administrators at public institutions gage whether a course of study is worth subsidizing with tax-dollars.

With this in mind, we need to conduct a cost/benefit analysis of the Student Senate’s leadership trip.

The for-profit National Council on Student Leadership’s website states its conference sessions are based on the “Social Change Model of Leadership,” developed in 1996 by the Higher Education Research Institute at UCLA.

The model focuses on the seven “C’s” of leadership; consciousness of self, congruence, commitment, collaboration, common purpose, controversy with civility, and citizenship, with the inclusion of an eighth C, “change.”

These eight values can be measured using a statistically valid assessment tool known as the Socially Responsible Leadership Scale, which is distributed at no cost by the National Clearinghouse for Leadership Programs (http://nclp.umd.edu/srls.aspx).

To our knowledge, an assessment of the Senate Executive Board’s leadership proficiency has not been conducted. However, cost-effective online leadership training is available and an assessment tool already exists at no cost. For $3,450, Senate could offer 50 students the opportunity to complete The National Center for Student Leadership Certified Student Leader: Group Fundamentals online course, which is offered through the NCSL website.

That would be more than enough slots to cover the entire Senate and a majority of the Campus Activity Board representatives. This would be an obvious course of action for responsible leaders to take.

However, the Student Senate has argued that spending $18,500 from your student activity fees to send nine lucky students to Orlando, Florida, will somehow be more beneficial to the student body. We request that the Student Senate provide some proof as to what these supposed benefits actually are.

If your hometown is Chadron, register to vote at the County Clerk’s office by 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 24. If you live in Nebraska and intend to make Chadron your hometown, or feel more passionate about issues here than in your hometown; register to vote here.

Once you’ve registered, make sure you vote on Tuesday, Nov. 4.

Here’s why: the outcome of the election will have direct impacts on your life. As a member of the CSC community you can make the difference in the outcome of this election.

College students historically do not turn out for midterm elections, but when they do, they have an outsize impact.

This election includes candidates for Governor, the U.S. Senate, U.S. House of Representatives. A statewide initiative to raise the minimum wage, Chadron City Council seats and a sales tax proposition, are also among the items on the ballot this year.

The U.S. Senate majority is at stake, and the differences between the Nebraska candidates are clear. Many of you work for minimum wage and this base determines all the wages above it.

The Chadron City Council determines issues related to transportation, law enforcement, housing, and the implementation of the pool expansion if the sales tax proposition passes, among many other issues.

CSC students have the opportunity to get a year-round pool in two or three years, or longer, and will pay for the use of the pool via student activity fees. You’ll either get a 4-lane lap pool on campus with few other amenities, or a City 6-lane pool across 10th street with a therapy pool, slides, meeting/party room, walking track, sun deck and other features.

The second option will only happen if the sales tax proposition passes. When you graduate and live here, your access to an oncampus pool will be severely limited, whereas the city pool will be much more accessible to all area residents.

Does your vote matter? Yes, in many ways. You can determine the outcomes of the local election and influence the outcomes of the statewide elections. You as an individual, perhaps for the first time, can exercise the most fundamental right and responsibility of a citizen – to inform yourself and participate in electing your representatives and passing important initiatives.

You become enfranchised, something many of your compatriots have fought and died for. Some of you are, or will be, among that number – thank you. Voting means you become invested in your community in a way that is not possible in any other fashion.

The right to vote means nothing if you don’t exercise it. So vote.

S

napchat is a cell phone app that allows users to take a photo, attach text, place a timer on the message, and then send it to a friend. After the message is opened, the timer counts down and once it’s expired, the message supposedly disappears forever.

But did you hear that Snapchat got hacked?

Two weeks ago, hackers leaked an archive containing over 200,000 images. While most news reports indicate that this hack was limited to users of a European-based third-party application that allowed users to save Snapchat messages, Snapchat has issued statements assuring its users that they can continue using the app without fear of their privacy being violated.

But that doesn’t mean you’re out of the woods. After the timer has run out on a snap, your phone still shows the sender’s user name and when the message was sent. That’s a lasting record, and almost everything you do online leaves behind a similar trail of breadcrumbs. It’s hard telling what other information might be saved elsewhere.

Recently, The Guardian published a story about Whisper, another popular cell phone app that allows users to anonymously post a short message. By keeping your identity a secret, Whisper gives you the power to share things publicly that you might not feel comfortable posting on other social media websites.

How this app is used depends on

the end user; it could be something as mundane as naming your crush, to something serious, like whistle-blowing on government corruption.

However, The Guardian reporters found that Whisper has been collecting these messages and storing them in a searchable database along with data about the user’s location. Users could opt out by disabling the location settings attached to their messages, however, it wasn’t expressly stated that Whisper wouldn’t track your location through other means.

Whisper has been tracking the location of users who share potentially newsworthy secrets, and The Guardian was at one point discussing a partnership with the company to develop reporting on a number of issues garnered from Whisper posts. However, The Guardian backed out of the deal once it learned that Whisper was not being fully transparent with its users regarding what information it collects.

Good on The Guardian, and shame on Whisper for misleading the public, intentionally or not.

But here’s the watch-word: Transparency. It’s a delicate balance between providing someone a service for free

and bringing in revenue to keep your company in operation.

By now we should all be aware that Facebook, Google, and Twitter collect information about what we post online and then sell that data to advertisers.

By using a complicated series of algorithms, social media websites deliver you related stories, trending topics, and targeted advertisements based on what you post, like, and share. You aren’t so much a user, but a product passed on and sold to marketers.

The issue is that the algorithms these sites use constantly change, and no one outside of social media companies knows exactly how they work. The word, again, is transparency.

Facebook to be specific has made numerous changes to its algorithm; when you click on a story someone has shared, you might notice how related stories pop up underneath it. Facebook has tweaked that algorithm multiple times in an attempt to filter out spam, memes, and click-bait UpWorthy articles. It changed again in the aftermath of the Ferguson, Missouri, protests after receiving negative criticism; users’ newsfeeds were cascaded with viral ice-bucket challenge videos, while news that begged for our attention went largely ignored and unnoticed.

Over the summer, news broke that Facebook conducted behavioral modification research in 2012 on some 700,000 users without their consent.

The story raised ethical concerns and lawsuits have been filed against the company in the U.K. for potentially violating British laws.

Again, the watch-word is transparency. While applications and websites

provide us wonderful new ways to communicate and share our experiences, the downside of this technology comes from the lack of accountability and full-disclosure on the part of the service provider.

So who is to blame for all of these transparency issues? Who is to blame for our privacy being violated? Who do we hold accountable for our trust being broken?

While companies certainly need to ensure they secure their customer’s information, I’d argue that it’s your responsibility to protect your information. By using this technology, you are complicit in how companies use your information. Your usage means you submit to sacrificing privacy while faceless corporate entities reap outlandish commercial profits.

So while we can all complain about getting hacked or having our privacy violated, no one is holding us at gunpoint. You weren’t forced to tweet that picture of your lunch, nor were you forced to snap that naked picture of yourself. The inherent risk of putting anything online is that the person viewing that information might not always be your intended recipient, and it’s almost to the point where the concept of privacy has become a novelty.

Activists and law-makers can continue to push companies to be more responsible, secure, and transparent about their motives, but the easiest and surest way to protect yourself and maintain your right to privacy is simple: limit your use of these technologies and avoid sending anything you wouldn’t be comfortable seeing on the front page of a newspaper.

Shine bright like ‘T Brittany Province Reporter “The Diamonds,” a classic rock and roll group with a twist of today’s attitude and humor graced CSC as the third Galaxy Series installment. “The Diamonds” performed at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Memorial Hall with help from Sandy Schaefer, music professor, on the drums, and William Mullins, music instructor, on the piano. The musical selection ranged from the classic rock bands

of the 50s and 60s; they began the night with a mash up starting with a Chuck Berry classic “Roll Over Beethoven,” and The Four Seasons; “Sherry.”

“The Diamonds” musical group started back in 1954 in Toronto, Canada and is currently located in Reno, Nevada, where they do 120 shows a year. The group travels all over the place throughout the year and some of the bigger places they have performed at are Chicago, Austin, and New Brunswick, Canada.

The musical groups longest lasting member, of 40 years Gary Owens of Rhino, Nevada; sings baritone for

the group. Owens joined the group in 1973 while earning his undergraduate degree in music at California State University when he ran into a guy who was trying to put the band back together.

Jerry Siggins, the lead singer and the second longest lasting member of 23 years, joined “The Diamonds” in 1991. Before joining the group, Siggins was working at Disney Land for “The Dapper Dans” when he got a call about an opening spot for “The Diamonds” and decided to pursue.

Wide Receiver Kyle Hooper, sophomore of Alliance, caught six passes for 78 yards, and Wide Receiver Kyle Vinich, junior of Casper, Wyoming, grabbed five for 50. Tailback Michael Madkins, senior of Sacramento, California, snagged eight passes for 47 yards. Madkins was the only Eagle to score a touchdown in the game on a three-yard run.

Tailback Cody Paul, sophomore of Seal Beach, California, led all the running backs from both teams with 55 yards. Tailback Derek Jackson, redshirt freshman of Pueblo West, Colorado, tallied 51 rushing yards and Madkins marked 30.

He rushed for 217 yards, including a touchdown. He completed a pass to Wide Receiver Danny O’Boyle, junior of Gering, for a 74-yard touchdown. Madkins averaged 7.2 yards on 30 carries.

McLain completed 14 of 23 passes for 169 yards. After completing four TD passes, he is the all-time leader in school history with 83 touchdown passes.

The team marked a seasonhigh of 575 offensive yards.

Vinich caught five passes for 83 yards, and Inside Receiver Austen Stephens, senior of Lincoln, snagged three for 20.

Wood and Linebacker Isaac Holscher, senior of Scottsbluff, marked six tackles each, leading the defense. Holscher, Furrier and Linebacker Collin Eisenman, redshirt freshman of Sheridan, Wyoming, tallied sacks, and Safety Cole Montogomery, junior of Casper, Wyoming, caught an interception.

Saturday, the team plays against Black Hills State University. The teams have been rivals since 1912. The teams quit playing each other when CSC made the change to RMAC, but, in 2012, BHSU joined the RMAC and the rivalry was renewed.

Both coaches, CSC Head Coach Jay Long and BHSU’s John Reiners, are alumni of CSC. Long was head coach for BHSU before he came to Chadron. RMAC names AllAcademic selections Jordyn Hulinsky Sports Editor Twenty-eight CSC athletes were named to RMAC All-Academic Teams, including seven volleyball players and 21 football players. Six football players were selected for the All-Academic First Team.

For both sports, to receive honors student-athletes must maintain a 3.30 GPA and be a contributing factor to the team.

Sports information directors from RMAC schools vote for the selections.

Behind only Colorado State University-Pueblo’s 24 athletes, CSC’s 23 was the second largest group of football players selected. Colorado Mines was tied with CSC for the most First Team selections.

Offensive First Team selections include Wide Receiver Danny O’Boyle, junior of Gering; Inside Receiver Ethan Bauer, senior of Morse Bluff; and Center Sam Parker, senior of Harrison.

Defensive Lineman Zach Sandstrom, senior of Chadron, and Linebacker Isaac Holscher, senior of Scottsbluff, are part of

the defensive First Team.

Randy Wentz, sophomore of Scottsbluff, was named as the First Team kicker.

This is the third year in a row that Sandstrom has been named on the RMAC First Team. Parker was named to the First Team last season.

Last year, Sandstrom and Parker were named Academic All-Americans. Bauer and Holscher were on the All-Academic Honor Roll last year.

CSC’s volleyball was also second in number of studentathletes with honors. Colorado Mesa University honored eight.

Volleyball team’s losing streak continues Evan Brooks Preston Goehring Cheyenne Deering William McLaughlin Reporters The CSC volleyball team hit the road for match-ups against Metro State UniversityDenver, Oct. 10, and Colorado School of Mines, Oct. 11, suffering losses to both teams.

Friday’s match-up with Metro State ended in three sets with scores of 25-21, 25-13, and 25-15.

The first set was the closest of the three, with CSC playing solid defense throughout as they held the Roadrunners to a .100 hitting percentage. The Eagles also received the help of the Roadrunners, who committed 12 errors in the set. Nonetheless, Metro still came out on top.

Metro State woke up after the first set, pouring on the points quickly from that point on. Four players finished with at least six kills for the Roadrunners.

Metro was not willing to give up much defensively, holding the Eagles to a hitting percentage below .100 and finished with five total team blocks.

Outside Hitter Erika Roybal, senior of Denver, ran the show for the Eagles, finishing with a team-high nine kills. Setter Shelby Gardner, redshirt freshman of Colby, Kansas, did well in distributing the ball, as she finished with 18 assists.

On the defensive side of the net, Outside Hitter Hanna Flaming, senior of Benton, Kansas, and Middle Hitter Alia Brennan, sophomore of Chadron, had three and two blocks, respectively. Defensive Specialist Alyssa Bauer, senior of Rapid City, South Dakota, helped with 11 digs.

The Eagles looked to rebound in Saturday’s match-up against Colorado School of Mines, but fell short again.

Mines swept Chadron State in convincing fashion, winning by scores of 25-16, 25-13, and 25-17.

Despite the loss, the Eagles showed a bit of life early in the final set. They kept things close, tying the score six times and leading twice, but Mines would go on an 8-1 run to close out the match.

Both teams did well in their play behind the net on their way to seven team blocks

each. Brennan and Outside Hitter Alexis Farris, freshman of Blair, had four blocks apiece.

The ball was distributed well in this game as well, with six players from each team getting on the board for kills. Gardner dished out 25 for Chadron.

For the Eagles, Brennan had a teamhigh six kills. Flaming and Farris added five apiece, and Roybal and Outside Hitter Lelalelei Nomura, junior of Pago Pago, American Samoa, each finished with four.

The Eagles volleyball team traveled to Spearfish, South Dakota, Oct. 14 to take on Black Hills State University. The Yellow Jackets cruised to a three set victory with scores of 25-20, 25-19, 25-20. The Eagles had to face a defense that put up 14 blocks during the match. Helped by the performance of Roybal, the Eagles were able to keep each set close. Roybal recorded 12 kills and hit .250. Nomura finished the game with eight kills and five blocks.

Gardner did her part for the team by adding 23 set assists. Spreading the ball around, five teammates had at least four kills. Farris added nine kills for CSC. Flaming helped the Eagles defense with four blocks.

Solid defense helped the Yellow Jackets keep the Eagles to a .120 hitting average.

Six Yellow Jacket players recorded at least one block.

CSC failed to soar over Colorado Christian University Friday night, losing in three sets, 25-16, 25-19, and 25-20.

The Eagles played competitively against CCU in the first set. The Eagles won a long rally at a 15-15 tie thanks to one of three blocks from Roybal. CSC errors assisted the Cougar’s first set win 25-16.

The Eagles struggled to pass the Cougars in the second set. CSC errors led to a 12-17 lead by CCU. Roybal’s kills helped the Eagles gain points, only to be brought down by a kill from CCU’s Outside Hitter Kaylee Pierce, junior of Centennial, Colorado, who had 15 kills overall. CCU pulled away to win 25-19.

CCU came out strong in the third set, sending over a tip that rattled the Eagles.

Wrestling team gears up for season CSC wrestlers hosted a public practice and prepare for intrasquad scrimmage.

Janelle Kesterson Lifestyles Editor The CSC wrestling team will host their annual intrasquad match, The Black and Cardinal Classic, at 6 p.m., Friday in the NPAC. Saturday, the Eagle wrestlers had their public practice in the NPAC, where they gave students and community members an opportunity to see a wrestling practice.

The Eagle wrestlers’ will launch their competitive season with the Darktronics Open Tournament at South Dakota State University in Brooking Nov. 2.

The Eagles maintained a competitive game against CCU, tying the game 24 times. Setter Justine Ackie, junior of Phoenix, Arizona, set up a strong front row with 29 assists and zero errors. Roybal led the team with 11 kills with Brennan right behind with 10. The Eagles finished the game with 36 kills.

Farris and Bauer kept the Eagles in the game with 14 digs each; however, the effort was not enough to return CCU’s 44 overall kills and .268 hitting percentage.

The Eagle’s 23 errors to CCU’s 14 hurt the team significantly.

Blacks Hills State University totaled 53 kills to Chadron State’s 51 Tuesday evening in route to a 4-1 victory.

Middle Hitter Holly Hamlin, senior of Palm Desert, California, led Black Hills State with 15 kills with four-set win 26-24, 25-16, 1725, 25-20. The Eagles record now falls to 3-18 overall and 2-11 in conference play.

The Eagles held a 24-22 lead in the first and led by as much as six points, but could not close out as the Yellow Jackets came back to win 26-24.

“It’s tough losing a set like that especially when we played well up to that point,” Eagles Head Coach Chris Wells said.

Roybal led CSC with 15 kills and Nomura added nine. The Eagles hit .104 as a team, but the Yellow Jackets edged them out hitting .161 as a team.

The Eagles had a balanced defense, Bauer chipped in 24 digs to lead at players and Farris added 15.

The Eagles will travel to Lakewood, Colorado, Saturday to take on Colorado Christian University.

They will play South Dakota Mines in Rapid City Tuesday.

Monday night the library was buzzing with excited voices as the Nerd Triathlon challenged students and their minds.

The first challenge was a book scavenger hunt. Each participant was given a clue, and from there they had to follow three other clues until they found a marked book, which they had to checkout in order to win.

The second challenge focused on balancing books on top of their heads. They started with one book and walked from one book to another.

Once they reached another book on the floor they were given a book to balance on their head. After reaching the end, they had to turn around and return to the beginning, all the while trying to balance four or more books.

The last challenge was a game of Book Jeopardy.

Slessor speaks on differences between UK and US Maria Evtodieva Reporter

Former BBC documentary film director, Tim Slessor, spoke about differences between United States and the United Kingdom at this week’s Grave Lecture Series Tuesday evening in the King Library Room 111.

Slessor showed students and professors geographical, historical, and social differences between U.S. and U.K. His presentation, titled “Perceptions–Them and Us–U.K. and U.S.,” focused on the distinction of English language’s pronunciation, spelling, meaning, and modern features.

Slessor discussed the common terms and phrases that are said around the world, known as Americanisms. Examples included “okay” and “no comment.”

Also, he presented the different analogies. For instance, Great Britain does not use terms “what’s up” and “go figure.”

A London native and long-time BBC

documentary films director, Slessor, visited CSC the first time 49 years ago.

“I sent the request to the president of your college and got a very enthusiastic letter,” he said.

Slessor worked more than 30 years making BBC Nature documentary films.

He has written several books about a variety of topics including his travels across the U.S. and Europe, historical editions, and government’s secrets of 20th century.

His book, “First Overland,” focused on the expedition from English Channel to Singapore.

Another publication, “More than Cowboys,” exposed the American West features and history.

A third, “Lying in State,” centered on how and why government hid facts during a world crisis and wars.

Slessor said he loves Chadron people because they “are friendly.” He also said he noticed a difference between CSC students in the 1960s and now.

Slessor will present his final lecture about his residency in Chadron, Wednesday, Nov. 19, in the CSC Sandoz Center.

Book fair taking place in Burkheiser Angela Cruz Contributor The CSC Child Development Center Laboratory is hosting a Scholastic Book Fair in Burkheiser Room 212 today, which ends 5 p.m., Friday.

“The Book Fair is an annual event,” CDC Director Lona Downs, said.

This year’s event started Oct. 20 and ends Oct. 24.

All sales will become Scholastic Dollars and used toward book purchases.

Downs said their current library is outdated, but “we don’t like to throw books away.”

The old books will be fixed, so the public can take them once the new books arrive.

The Book Fair is open 7 a.m.-5 p.m. and is accepting donations. The public and campus communities are invited.

Turnout low for biannual pool tourney Angela Cruz Reporter

The Late Night at The Pit Pool Tournament gathered competitive players Thursday night.

The single player tournament started at 9 p.m., and had 24 players participating. The tournament applied 8-ball rules. The rules covered how a rack must be set, what would happen after player scratches, and what should happen when a player double hits the cue ball. The rules also specified that players must keep “at least one foot on the floor at all times that a player is shooting” and there would be “no ball-in-hand scratches.” The Pit workers refereed the tables.

The tournament winner was Eddie Puga, 20, freshman of Los Angeles, who competed against Brandon Swanson, 23, senior of Arthur, during the final round. Puga earned a CSC Nike sweatshirt. Second place winner, Swanson, got a CSC Dri Fit T-shirt.

Isaiah Castellaw, 20, junior of Scottsbluff, placed third and left with a CSC tank top.

Despite winning, Puga commented about the tables.

“They need to get these tables fixed,” he

said afterward.

Players, and several audience members, moaned and groaned when players missed their targets due to the poor conditions of the tables. During Puga’s first game, his cue ball bounced up after hitting one of the slumped walls on his table and landed in a corner pocket.

All five pool tables were used in the tournament, including one that had been closed weeks prior. A college staff member fixed it before the event started.

“Hopefully, we will end up with funds at the end of the semester to fix them up,” said The Pit Manager Jennie Robbins, 21, senior of Mitchell.

Despite the jokes and laughter that filled The Pit, students noticed poor turnout compared to past tournaments.

“We usually have a lot bigger turnout,” Robbins said, adding that some events draw larger crowds than others, and she expects more people will attend the next tournament.

Pit desk worker Elysha Stahla, 20, junior of Moorcroft, Wyoming, put a positive spin on poor attendance.

“It’s smaller than last year, but running smoother than last year too,” Stahla said.

The Pit hosts a pool tournament at least once a semester, Robbins said.

‘Maze Runner’ full of twists, turns Arielle Boone Advertising Director

On Oct. 11, I decided to attend the movie “Maze Runner” with a friend at the Chadron theater. We arrived semi-early, but assumed it would be slow because it was the matinee on a Sunday.

Our theory was proved incorrect; I think everyone in Chadron attempted to see a movie that day. This movie in particular must have been a popular choice, because almost every seat in the upstairs theater was occupied.

Even with our less-than-perfect situation, the movie itself was really good and could be considered one of the best to premiere this year. It was no wonder everyone else also

wanted to see it.

I knew it was based off a book series that had high rankings, and I expected it to be good, but without prior knowledge of the plot I had no idea what would take place.

It had a Hunger Games feel to it: full of suspense, action, and twists that kept you on your toes. Throughout the movie, I was on the edge of my seat, anxiety washing over me, waiting to see what would happen next.

The movie opens with a boy named Thomas emerging in a foreign world. He is scared and confused without any memory of his past or how he got there. Like the others stuck in this place, barricaded inside a maze, he has to learn to work together with the others to maintain the lifestyle those before him had created.

Thomas however is not content with fol-

lowing the rules of the tribe and his curiosity overcomes him about why all these boys are still trapped and doing nothing about it. His memory also slowly returns, and unlike the others he begins to realize why they are there and begins to plan their escape.

This does not come without animosity from others in the group when they begin realizing the terrors of the maze are increasing as Thomas keeps pressing for answers.

Also many become concerned with his actions when they realize there is only one final recruit placed in the maze, and that it is a woman.

Through trial and error and the ability to remain confident in his plan, he leads the others; those willing to follow, out of the maze.

This movie has hidden meanings relatable to real life situations. Many of us continue to

go through the motions, wanting to just finish school or follow what everyone else chooses to do. But like Thomas, some of the greatest rewards come from the risks we take.

It is too easy following the leader instead of becoming one. I think we miss out on many opportunities presented our way because we do not want to break out of the mould and go for those things. I think that is why I related so well with this movie. I should not let others choose the path I take, and I do not want to only follow the easy road.

Even with all I have told you about this movie, there are many key details I intentionally left out so that you can attend this film and create your own opinions of it. Trust me when I say this: if you did not read the books, you will not be able to predict the outcome, and I think that is the best part.
