CAB allocated $3,530 for events including $1,500 for free bowling night, Saturday; $1,800 for free movie night, Sunday; and $230 for registration fees for the Intramural Flag-Football Championship Nov. 8-10, bringing CAB’s total to $15,390.40.

CAB Chair, Lane Swedberg, justified the allocation for the Intramural FlagFootball Championship saying CAB was only paying for the registration fees and no other traveling expenses, and under the same circumstances, other clubs could get the same kind of funding.

Lordino requested each club to email its constitutions to him in order to keep an updated copy.

“It is not to regulate you guys at all,” Lordino said.

Swedberg also said that CAB is looking into giving mass text notifications, available for all students, upcoming events.

Vice Chair of Programming, Dani Buckley, said that if clubs were still interested in participating in the “Moonlight Madness” downtown from 4-6 p.m., Friday, they need to call the Chamber of Commerce at 308-432-4401 for a set-up time and what each club will be doing.

Clubs have also been invited to participate in the KCSR “Parade of Lights” Friday, Dec. 6.

Senators heard two proposals, referring both guests elsewhere, and discussed the leadership conference in Peru.

Teri Albertazzi, applied sciences instructor, came to talk about fundraising opportunities. Albertazzi said that she has heard from her students that fundraising opportunities on campus are difficult to find. Albertazzi asked Senate if it would be possible to set up a booth between Armstrong and the football field that clubs could rent in order to fundraise during football games.

Aaron Prestwich, director of student affairs, said that Senate does not approve fundraising efforts, but that they could look into how to get Albertazzi’s effort approved.

dent Senate about the coming National Council of Teachers of English convention. Several Sigma Tau Delta members plan to attend as a part of their English Teaching Methods class.

Susan Schaeffer, associate professor of counseling, psychology, and social work, said that Student Senate was not the appropriate place to ask for money for their trip. She said that the trip is academic, and therefore, the students should be able to fill out an Intentional Initiative request. She said the Intentional Initiative request may be able to help them get money from the Dean’s office.

Finally, Jacob Rissler, president, and Nate Jones, vice president, said that the leadership conference held in Peru was a great experience. Rissler and Jones said that next week they will give a powerpoint presentation during their meeting about the conference.

New course to mark in CSC’s history Spike Jordan Managing Editor

With advising week around the corner, the history department is offering a new concept course for the spring semester, HIST 465: Process in the North American West.

Students who enroll in the course can expect to focus on the process of historic memory while collecting, cataloging, and archiving artifacts and stories from the surrounding area. The data collected will be used for The History Harvest project, directed by William G. Thomas and Patrick D. Jones at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

“The class is not just about recording, but interpreting stories to understand the past,” David Nesheim, assistant professor of history, said Monday.

Nesheim said he will be teaching the course and the class will be linked with History Harvests being conducted at University of Nebraska­at Kearney, and UNL. The groups will have weekly meetings via Skype to discuss their findings and address topics.

“These stories have value to the families that share them,” Nesheim said, “and chances are they will have value to historians as well.”

Students looking for more information about the History Harvest project can visit htt://historharvest.unl.edu, and speak to their advisor to find out how to enroll in the course.

Students are advised to sign up for spring classes before the end of fall semester.

Old Admin TVs purchased to promote events, programs Ashley Swanson News Editor

A flat screen television hangs at the end of the east hallway on the first floor of Old Admin, while students and faculty head to class after the lunch hour.

That describes the flat screen TV hanging at the east end of the first floor hallway in Old Admin.

“The purpose of the TV is to provide information to students about programs, events, and deadlines,” Donald King, department chair of education, said Wednesday.

Each day, the TV also plays footage of events from the past, including the 2012 zombie homecoming half-time entertainment. Interviews with various students and faculty on campus also play throughout the day, with them explaining why they think Chadron State College is the place to be; what courses are offered; and why they came to CSC. Joe Forstrum, dean of liberal arts, said Wednesday that the TVs were purchased from her general operation budget as per a faculty request during the remodeling of Old Admin.

Currently, the first floor TV, which was installed a week before the fall semester began, is not networked with other TVs around campus, King said. Once it is networked, events and programs from other areas on campus can play on the TV in Old Admin.

The Justice Studies department on the third floor of Old Admin also has a TV, which displays its studies abroad trips, courses available, and upcoming events. The Justice Studies maintains the third floor TV.

Advising week is set for Oct. 28— Nov. 1 for undergraduate students who are not registered for the spring semester.

Faculty Senate President Susan Schaeffer, associate professor of counseling, psychology, and social work, said Monday that she encourages students to participate. She also recommended that students meet with their advisers to discuss classes.

She also said students who do not have an adviser or who do not know their adviser, should visit the START Office.

A CSC press release states that online and graduate students are also encouraged to participate, however, they will have a different event called Sneak Peek, which began Wednesday and ends Friday.

EDITORIAL–THE EAGLE’S VIEW

Journalism serves a vital function Isaac Avilucea, reporter for the North Adams Transcript, in North Adams, Mass., wrote a feature story last week about Cheyanne Alcombright, a local school soccer player. Alcombright told Avilucea that she transferred to a different Massachusetts school; even though it had “somewhat inferior athletics and academics.” Her old school, Mount Greylock, was “like the movie mean girls.”

Avilucea was fired Friday after the Transcript’s Editor-in-Chief fielded calls from principals and angry parents. Avilucea’s story had portrayed the town in an unflattering manner. This story drew our attention.

We are concerned that some do not understand the role professional journalists play in our society.

The misconception is that a journalists’s job is to flatter the community they serve, from its government to its sports teams. The role of a newspaper is to inform community members about what is going on around them.

Reporters and newspapers are incredibly vital.

Readers are often busy and do not always have the time or the ability to attend newsworthy events or find information. Therefore, it’s a reporter’s job to research, record, condense, and recount events and information so that it can be read.

When a newspaper publishes reports, its readers then have a way to find out what they missed. The goal is to provide the reader with that information in an expedient and easy-to-read fashion. The intent is that the public will read the news and be informed.

What is considered a newsworthy event might not a be pleasant, and what is pleasant might not be news.

But it is a necessary function to keep the public informed regardless of whether those happenings are good or bad. It’s an editor’s job to determine the newsworthiness of an event and assign a reporter to cover it.

The reporter has an obligation to the reader to report a story in an unbiased, fair, and balanced fashion while still making it interesting. The editor has an obligation to make sure that the reporter is accurate.

While we make mistakes, we acknowledge them when they are brought to our attention, internally, and especially by our readers.

Editorials, such as this article and the pieces appearing on pages marked “opinion,” serve an important function as well. They provide an outlet for a newspaper’s editors, columnists, and readers (YES, EVEN YOU, —ESPECIALLY YOU) a place to have their opinions read by others. This allows people to take a public stance on issues of public importance, voice their concerns, and when necessary, advocate a specific course of action.

The ‘Garry’s Incident’ incident

I

f you aren’t familiar with the independent gaming scene, then it’s doubtful you have heard the recent controversy surrounding a game called “Day One: Garry’s Incident”.

I wasn’t aware that this game existed until a few days ago, when a thread on Reddit exploded with comments bashing the game developer, Wild Games Studio.

Naturally curious, I clicked the link, and it lead me to a video from a wellknown YouTube celebrity by the name of TotalBiscuit, otherwise known as John Bain.

Apparently, Wild Games had Bain’s review of the game taken down due to copyright issues.

However, Bain says that this is not the case. The incident started when he emailed Wild Games, asking for permission to do a review of it.

Wild Games mentioned that they were going to make ad revenue off of his review through YouTube and a bunch of other legal mumbo jumbo, and in the end, sent Bain a serial key for the game and said, “Go right ahead.”

When Bain made the review, it was overwhelmingly negative, and I could see why. The game was basically broken and unfinished in several different aspects.

If you want to find out for yourself, you can search for the game on YouTube and you will find “over 9000” horrible reviews.

Heck, you don’t even need to go to YouTube; right now on Metacritic.com, the game has received a piddly 40 posi-

tive reviews, while the negative reviews exceed 470. The consensus is that everyone hates this game.

As if that wasn’t already enough bad press, there’s a theory floating around that the developer has been making up reviews and posting them to Metacritic in order to increase the game’s score ( a tactic known as “sock-puppeting.”) I’m not sure whether or not the rumor is true, but there is a lot of evidence that suggests it’s the case.

Since Bain has a lot of followers on YouTube, his review became the most watched review of the game. Because of this, the developers filed a copyright claim against him.

The lead developer, Stephane Woods, said publicly, “We protected our copyright because Bain has no right to make advertising revenues with our license.”

If you don’t understand why this is crap, let me tell you. Wild Games gave Bain permission to review the game.

They even gave Bain a free copy of the game.

Woods has turned around because someone is saying bad things about his game. That is censorship, no other way to put it. You can’t just abuse the system to remove negative criticism, that is low, and it makes you look like a freaking idiot.

If anything, as an independent developer, Wild Games should be open to criticism! It’s probably the best tool they have at their disposal when they make your next game, and they can be certain

To be fair, there are a lot of people who just refuse to listen to criticism and go on to make a million dollars for an overhyped/rehashed concept (Call of Duty anyone?), but that is because they are a big company with CEOs. Smalltime indie developers should be willing to listen to their fans and make compromises.

This whole incident unfolded over the course of last week, and as of writing this, Wild Games has completely turned around again and withdrew their complaint on YouTube.

They also issued a statement apologizing for the whole ordeal, but that doesn’t do anything for me.

Wild Games Studio’s reputation has now been solidified as “that one game company that no one likes.”

The title is well deserved on their part.

Stop being cowards, own up to your opinions in public

I

hate the “CSC Confessions” page.

It draws my ire not because of the degrading image it paints of our institution (because college is such a dignified place to begin with), nor because of the half-cocked, logically questionable accusations leveled at The Eagle.

I hate it because anonymity is a horrible thing.

In an age where everyone’s phone is more intelligent than they are, anonymity has become synonymous with cowardice, cruelty, and, above all else, obnoxiousness.

The most sensible of people will quickly devolve into a blathering idiot as soon as they sit behind a keyboard or a microphone.

We’ve seen it before, whether it be teens allegedly driven to suicide thanks to online toughguys or the faculty at schools brilliantly posting inappropriate jokes about their students.

Why does this happen?

Some would argue that it is the fault of technology. After all, message boards and social networking sites the world over bear the work of would-be trolls (see also: unfunny, lonely wastes of flesh) who make it their business to upset people.

Others, like myself, would say that true human nature is revealed in a place like the Internet. Take away a person’s accountability, and you’ll see what kind of human being they really are.

I shudder to imagine the browser history most “respected” individuals leave behind each day. So much of our social interaction takes place from behind a screen that empathy becomes a thing of the past.

If you’re one of the people that thinks trolling is funny or people need to get over it, congratulations; you are making the development of verbal communication look like a giant waste of time.

Another issue with 24/7 Internet access is that no one stops to think before they spout their opinion.

Within seconds, a statement, factual or not, can be spouted out for millions to grab hold of. Once it is out, the genie is never going back in the bottle.

Any complaint about your job or moronic picture of your 19 year-old self with a beer is traceable back to you the very minute it goes up.

Decades ago, an outrageous news publication or television broadcast required a web of phone calls or carefully-worded letters sent in the mail. This required people to do something strange: namely, stop and think. Is this really so outrageous that it’s worth my time?

It’s easy to spout nonsense and halfcocked opinions off on a Facebook feed where your friends and family will virtually high-five you. It’s difficult to put your work in front of a hostile crowd and say “try me.” As I said, anonymity is for cowards.

So that’s what I’m doing here: throwing down the gauntlet. If you think The Eagle is a paper written by leftist, cardcarrying commies, I welcome you to throw your hat into the ring and do better. Alternative opinions have always been welcome.

The paper, so far, has had no takers.

Don’t like the headlines on the sports page? Do something about it: write a letter to the editor. Otherwise, save your breath and some oxygen for those around you.

Some may call this rant hypocritical, because after all, I’m simply spouting an opinion through a medium other than a blog.

But at least I put my name on it.

Fight Homesickness, think of CSC as home

Telling war stories is never easy

ake a lesson from the wise makers of clichés: the road to life success is always under construction.

We all face roadblocks. It was just two weeks ago many of us faced an almost universal roadblock among college students: feeling homesick.

Let’s rewind two weeks from today in order to refresh ourselves on what happened. Fall break was just about to begin and each of us was preparing for how we were going to spend it.

For those who prepared to go home, and whose home is close to Chadron, preparation likely meant packing a suitcase with a few pairs of clothes and a toothbrush.

For those whose home is a couple hundred miles from Chadron, preparation likely meant a suitcase plus a cup of coffee, along with a phone call to mom saying, “I’m coming home for the first time this semester, Mom! Get ready to feed me!” For others whose home is far away, preparation for fall break meant something different.

It meant calling home after stabilizing one’s emotions to say, “Hi Mom… actually I will not be able to make it home, I am sorry. Yes, the Caf and Grille are closed, but I can eat at McDonald’s. Yes Mom, my friends have left already… Dad wants to talk? Yes Mom, you can give the phone to Dad now. I love you, too.”

Those who fit in the last category are likely to have felt homesick, but even those who were fortunate enough to go home likely did too. If you went home during fall break, the moment you began struggling with homesickness might have been when you said your final goodbye to your mother.

It might have been halfway through your chatty drive back to Chadron when you noticed, rather than talking to your dad, you were talking to the moonlight spilled in the seat beside you.

Maybe it was when you got back to campus and, nearing your hall’s front desk where a night worker sat alone, you noticed the sign-in sheet. Your friends’ names were all on the sheet from the time they visited your room before fall break.

You would sure have loved to see them then, because you were feeling empty, but they all had places to be, and then you realized that is how your parents feel about you whenever they see reminders of you around the house.

No matter how close home may be, almost all of us were reminded of a struggle we face this fall break. That is the bad news.

The good news is that because almost all of us face this, we know what each other is, or will be, going through. I know of no greater forces than love and friendship when it comes to helping people through times of struggle.

Love is what binds family together through struggles, and friendship is what binds us through them.

So if, and when, you are dealing with homesickness, you can let us- your friends at college –make CSC your home away from home.

While it is true that the road to life success is always under construction, you can always make friends with someone who has a helicopter. Then you can fly right over the construction and life will be all like “what?”

It is tough to strike a balance between considering your listener (or in this case, reader), and saying what you really need to say. was invited to sit on a panel of Veterans last Thursday for an FYI class, “Virtue and the Warrior Spirit,” taught by English and Humanities Professors Kathleen Bahr and Brad Wilburn.

The panel consisted of Tim Donahue, Vietnam Vet and Professor of Marketing and Entrepreneurship; Franklin Annis, Iraq Vet with the Nebraska National Guard; John Noonan, Air Force Vet and CSC senior; and myself, Afghanistan Vet and former Marine.

I walked into the classroom expecting to lend some insight to the students, but I walked out questioning myself. The struggle I face when recounting my experience is to not come across as having a chip on my shoulder.

For me, the necessity to maintain a semblance of humility supersedes communicating what I feel needs to be said.

There’s a duality in that statement that cultivates a certain neurotic attitude, with the bulk of my cognitive dissonance stemming from two considerations.

The first consideration comes from a conversation I had with Ron Hull after he spoke to the media writing class my freshman year. Hull is one of the founding fathers of Nebraska Educational Television, and is a compelling story teller, so I had asked him for advice.

“You have to not waste a person’s time when you tell a story,” Hull said. “Time is the most valuable thing people have, it’s literally their life.”

The second consideration comes from author E. B. White. White revised William Strunk Jr.’s “Elements of Style,” and wrote several children’s books, including “Charlotte’s Web,” and “Stuart Little.”

White often said that a writer’s obligation is “to lift people up, not lower them down.”

My juxtaposition to that statement:

the iconic Marine recruiting poster with the tagline, “We don’t promise you a rose garden.”

That is certainly truth in advertising, and due to my experience as a Marine, it’s challenging to paint a chipper picture of my service. That’s probably the main reason why I switched from Public Relations to Journalism.

After living five years of bleak reality, I’ve become accustomed to dismissing the silver linings.

Having a positive outlook helps a person’s disposition, but the practice serves to avoid problems rather than solve them, and in a combat environment, problems are plentiful and require immediate attention.

If I try to write with a positive or promotional bias, it feels plastic, forced, and insincere. I don’t want to be a sycophantic cheerleader that makes people feel good about doing nothing. My message is the truth: the more brutal, the better.

But what holds me back in that regard is that I’ve witnessed my friends adopt a similar condescending attitude once they received their honorable discharge.

“While these 19-year-old punks were getting drunk and getting laid; I was in Afghanistan praying that I wouldn’t get my [genitals] blown off.”

That is a line I’ve read too many times, and while it’s honest, it’s hardly fair or uplifting.

Our society no longer maintains an understanding of war (and those who fight it), because the same freedom that allowed us to volunteer gives civilians the freedom to tune it out.

That problem is recursive in nature because those very freedoms have been afforded by the virtue of voluntary sacrifice, an experience for which a comprehensive and intimate understanding seems to be exclusive to the volunteer.

I used to think that suffering in silence allowed me to present myself as

Spike Jordan Managing Editor “well adjusted,” avoiding the stereotype of the disgruntled and jaded Veteran. I still can’t justify saddling even my closest friends or family with the stories I really want to tell.

It’s the day and age of choice; I chose, and they didn’t. I have to respect their choice, and I think it is expected that I ask for nothing in return.

While I feel I have earned some degree of consideration or at the very least, empathy; I’ll never be comfortable having to ask for it, because that very act makes me vulnerable to unwarranted criticism.

On a several occasions, I’ve had people imply that I’m a drain on the tax-payer and I’ve been summarily dismissed as a whiney and entitled Millenial.

I’m wise enough to know now that appealing to guilt trips to spark action or engage interest is a fruitless pursuit.

That tactic only wastes people’s time and makes a message prone to being ignored.

When that happens, it invalidates the reason why I’m here today.

I went to war as part of the Nintendo generation combating an ambiguous foe, rather than having engaged in “the good fight” against a defined enemy.

I feel guilty knowing that I came back in one piece while 6,774 of my comrades were not so lucky.

I have a hard time knowing that millions more are still living but are hardly alive; VA hospitals overflow with the wounded, our streets are filled with the homeless, and on a daily basis there is an average 22 Veterans that commit suicide.

Because I made it out alive, I owe those fallen and injured service members my talents to draw attention to these issues.

My life is a debt that I can never repay, and because of that debt I suffer from a crushing fear.

That I too will be ignored.

Cat Calls don’t impress, they come off as creepy When boys hit a certain age, it’s time to grow-up and act like gentlemen.

A

friend of mine works at the Best Western here in Chadron, and often sees characters of all sorts come through. Two weeks ago, she texted me about the football team that was staying in their hotel.

“I’ve been called baby, babe, honey, sweetie, and gotten winked at so many times tonight it’s ridiculous. The football players are nice with ‘ma’am’ and ‘miss’ and even… ‘Katie’... the coaches however...”

I was shocked. It seems that the idea that boys eventually mature and grow into men is a completely false one.

First off, I’m personally not even really a fan of pet names when I’m in a relationship with someone. I think the same could be said for a lot of women. So what in the world would make someone think that a woman would appreciate being called by a pet name when she doesn’t even know the guy.

I had the same experience when I worked at Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart has name tags with huge,

blocky, blue letters on them. They can be read from a good 5 aisles away. And yet, a thirtysome year old man standing directly in front of me kept calling me “sweetie” and “doll” when I was ringing him up.

As the rampant feminazi that 90 percent of this campus proclaims me to be (thank you, by the way), pet names irk me.

Read “A Doll’s House” if your humanities class hasn’t already forced you to, and you’ll see why. Pet names sound like something boys use to belittle women, make them seem smaller and more inconsequential than they really are.

Not only that, pet names from an older stranger are just creepy.

Aren’t these people supposed to be married?

I realize that not all women will agree with me, but it is fair to say that some women don’t appreciate pet names for these very reasons.

eyes. While walking through Omaha with the same friend, we walked past two gray-haired men sitting with their beers outside a pub.

Both of us clammed up when we noticed that the men were looking our exposed legs up and down. On Halloween last year, I was approached by a drunk man older than my father who flopped down beside me, and had a conversation with my cleavage.

A recent project done by Hannah Price, a photographer in Philadelphia, shows a series of photos of men who have catcalled her. She says that the point of her photos were to show men how it feels to be vulnerable, the way that a woman feels when she’s being catcalled.

Although I can’t speak for all women, I can say that myself and other people I’ve talked to often react to catcalls, pet names, whistles, and other awkward sexual advances negatively. It makes us feel vulnerable and uncomfortable.

So you’d think that grown men, having a few more years on this planet, would have learned to behave more like gentlemen than like boys.

Apparently not. Meanwhile, the football boys from CSU-Pueblo acted like perfect gentlemen. I had the same experience with them that my friend did. While I was waiting on them, the boys would respectfully say “thank you ma’am” or “excuse me, miss.” If they

Sara Labor Lifestyles Editor couldn’t see my name tag, they would address me, and other women working, with complete respect. And they were our age.

This is a pleasant surprise. At least some boys are learning how to act like men, even if some men are still acting like boys.

I would hope that more boys approach me, be it when I am working or even in a situation where they are trying to show attraction, with respect.

My point is, to all you boys out there, don’t end up like some meathead old man. No girl wants to feel creeped out by some random guy.

Don’t be that random guy.

‘TAP’ the night away Sara Labor

“TAP: The Show” lit up Memorial Hall’s main stage Thursday with a magical, colorful performance.

Everything about ‘Tap’ was on point. From the moment it started, to the moment it ended, I was drawn in by their energy.

The cast was made up of eight talented men and women that brought a history of tap dancing to life onstage.

Danny McHugh, was an excellent singer with a Bubbletype voice that went down like melted chocolate. His female counterpart, Maria Logan, could spin a tango better than a solo, but that’s not to say she wasn’t an equally excellent performer. Together, this dancing and singing duo brought pieces like “I Got Rhythm,” “I Won’t Dance,” and “The Good Ship Lollipop” to the stage. Each song was stunningly done.

The cast of dancers included Chris Large, Sebastian Goldberg, Carissa Gravelle, Sarah Mangold, and Michelle Fortner meanwhile, tapped their way through every song, accomplishing stunning feats.

The costuming was fantastic, and accompanied the show well. Every costume was brightly colored and bedazzled, making the stage a bright swirl of color and activity.

One of the best performances was “Singin’ in the Rain.” This breathtaking performance featured Gravelle, Fortner, and Mangold, decked in bright red rain jackets. At one point, they popped open their bedazzled umbrellas that looked like they were shimmering with actual rain.

The audience was stunned when the stage went completely dark.

The dancers were dressed entirely in black except for their glowing gloves, a bowtie and a hat, and a hair bow and skirt. This excellent skit made for laughs along with gasps for the audience when the hat was left floating in the middle of nowhere. The surprise toward the end of this glowing sketch was a giant pair of hands and feet.

When the lights came back up on the stage, the audience roared with applause.

The cast not only showed a history of tap, they also came out with different cultural styles. One stunning number had the cast dressed in tribal outfits and carrying sticks taller than them. This fast-paced number was one of the best. The dancers knocked their sticks together and hopped across the stage, creating their own music.

In Act Two, the audience was treated to a dance-off. Each member of the cast stepped forward in different styles of outfits to perform their own improved dance. Every member did an amazing job, however, Gravelle out danced the rest, aweing the audience with her quick feet, and encouraging applause.

One thing that can be easily said is that the main stage hasn’t seen such talent in a long time. Everything in “TAP: The Show” was well done. It was a fabulous performance, and I was glad to be part of the audience that stood to applaud them.

Eagles drop out of rankings but set records Jordyn Hulinsky Sports Editor Chadron State remains second in the RMAC football rankings following a loss to Colorado State University-Pueblo, 51-42, and a win against Black Hills State University, Spearfish, S.D., 43-13. The Eagles dropped out of the American Division II Coaches Poll and the D2Football.com Top 25 Poll following the loss to CSU-Pueblo.

Quarterback Jonn McLain, junior of Chadron, led the team to four new school records against CSU-Pueblo. The team set the record for the most total offense with 708 yards. McLain set three personal records by completing 49 of 74 passes for a total of 600 yards and four touchdowns. His completions, attempts, and yards were all records.

CSC set the record for the most rushing yards against BHSU with 495 yards.

“We have broken some offensive team records over the past few weeks,” Glen Clinton, senior of Cody, Wyo., said. “But it is important to continue studying our opponents in order to put more points on the board and avoid turnovers.”

He had 255 rushing yards on his own against BHSU. Clinton was named the RMAC Offensive Player of the Week, Nebraska Division II Offensive Player of the Week, and Beyond Sports Network Offensive Player of the Week.

Defensively, Shea Koch, senior of Custer, S.D., and Pierre Etchemendy, senior of Douglas, Wyo., led the team in tackles against CSU-Pueblo with 13 and 12 tackles, respectively.

Against the Yellow Jackets, the defense only allowed 346 yards.

“It was good to have held them to only that many yards,” Koch said. “But we need to play better as a whole, without having the let down on key downs in the game.”

Koch again led the team with eight tackles. Ryan Wood, redshirt freshman of Stockton, Calif., Lane Haller, junior of Gordon, and Trelan Taylor, senior of Spring Valley, Calif., were all credited with six tackles. Taylor also tallied an interception in his first game of the season following a suspension due to a credit shortage that happened two years ago.

The team captains said they still aren’t satisfied with their complete performance.

“We played a great game in Spearfish last weekend, especially in the second half,” Clinton said. “We are still striving to improve, especially with New Mexico Highlands coming to Chadron this week.”

Chadron State had five turnovers against CSU-Pueblo and three against BHSU. “We haven’t played a complete game yet as we have turned the ball over far too much,” McLain said.

Defensively, the Eagles aren’t satisfied either, Koch said.

“As a defensive unit we have given up too many big plays,” he said. “For a complete game to be played, we must dominant from start to finish.”

The Eagles play New Mexico Highlands University, Las Vegas, Saturday at noon, Elliott Field.

“Highlands is always very athletic,” McLain said. “We need to come out focused and ready to play.”

Following the Eagle’s win over Black Hills State University, Spearfish, S.D., Clinton was named the RMAC Offensive Player of the Week, the Nebraska Division II Offensive, and Beyond Sports Network Offensive Player of the Week.

He tallied 255 yards and three TDs against BHSU. This season he’s posted 964 rushing yards.

Volleyball team drops 4 at home, seeks win No. 4 on the road Nelle Kesterson Reporter After an upsetting four-game losing streak on the home court, the Eagle volleyball team will volley for a win as they travel to Colorado this week.

Their first match against the Colorado State University-Pueblo ThunderWolves is at 7 p.m. tonight.

The ThunderWolves have a 7-13 record to rival the Eagle’s 3-16 record.

After the Eagles contend with the ThunderWolves, they will travel to Gunnison, Colo., to try to edge the score in their favor and harness the Western State Colorado University Mountaineers at 7 p.m., Friday. The Mountaineers have a season record of 1-18.

As a third and final push for the weekend, the Eagles will travel to Alamosa, Colo. to claw at a win against the Adams State University Grizzlies at 7 p.m., Saturday.

The Grizzlies have a season record of 9-10.

However, the Eagles shot to come back won’t end in Alamosa. The Eagles will face the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology Hardrockers, Rapid City, at 6 p.m., Tuesday at Armstrong Gymnasium. The Eagles fell to the 6-17 Hardrockers two weeks ago in Rapid City, but this time the Eagles will have the home court advantage over the Hardrockers.

Fall is TV Season: What not to miss American Horror Story: Coven AHS's third season has been gathering hype since the middle of September with ambiguous 19 second advertisements. So does it live up to the hype that's been created?

"Coven" hit the nail on the head with its premiere. The season is set up already with excellent characters, a kick-butt cast, led by Jessica Lange and Kathy Bates, and plenty of creepy bits.

The Walking Dead AMC's popular series has come back in full force for its fourth season. The writers have said that this season, they plan to try and make the zombies scary again. And so far, they haven't dissappointed.

This season is bringing non-stop action and suspense. With a killer flu-bug running around, the rest of the season promises plenty of heart-stopping moments. Pray for your favorite character, boys and girls, because no one is safe.

Agents of SHIELD Joss Whedon makes his return to TV with a spin-off of the boxoffice hit "The Avengers." The series brings back the previously thought-to-be-dead Phil Coulson and several other agents of the secret government agency SHIELD, part of the Marvel Universe.

The series has a lot of promising qualities, from some excellent sexual tension, to a no nonsense female pilot, to a Tweedle-deedum-like comedic relief duo. And of course, who can resist something done by Whedon? Fingers crossed that it doesn't get canceled half-way through the season.

How I Met Your Mother We're actually meeting the mother this season. Need I say more?

The Big Bang Theory Even in its seventh season, "The Big Bang Theory" brings laughs with its gang of too-smart nerds.

Costume hunting can be haunting Justy Bullington

lright ladies, it’s that time of year again; the time of year when you decide just how disappointed you want to make your parents. That’s right, it’s Halloween season. Although we look forward to the holiday each year, we don’t look forward to the struggle that comes with it. Months and months of planning for a costume that won’t survive the night, the love/hate relationship that comes with a bowl of candy on the table and the weight room, and most of all, the moral struggle we face between funny, sexy, and comfort.

One of the biggest struggles of Halloween is with your wallet. “I’ll make my costume this year, it’ll be cheaper.” …. three hours later, we find ourselves knee deep in glitter, fabric, and our own tears, cutting feathers with the hot glue burned nubs once known as fingers. Cue the Amazon search now. We try to make the craft chaos more fun by making a group project out of it. More fun they say? Yeah, my idea of fun isn’t watching my friends turn into Project Runway designers while I’m sitting there struggling to open the glue.

After the costume is finished and/or delivered, we face the struggle of going out in the costume. Of course, we didn’t buy the costume that tennis shoes match. No. We bought the costume that requires six-inch knee-high boots with seven zippers, two buckles, and a passcode requiring the blood from our baby toe to wear. Halloween is the only night that society chooses to walk a marathon in the most uncomfortable shoes they own. And need I mention the struggle of duct tape costumes? You should never commit to a costume that doesn’t allow you to use the restroom without using scissors, and three friends.

Finally, could someone please explain to me why the holiday that suggests the least amount of clothing is also the holiday that hands out the most candy? We’re expected to dress as belly dancers when candy corn has moved to a major food group?

Since we’re on the candy topic, let’s reflect a moment on fun size candy bars. I’m just going to say there is nothing fun about a candy bar 1/3 the size of real candy bar. If I’m going to indulge, I don’t want to indulge halfway.

Halloween is a hassle. No if, ands, or buts about it. Why we continue to participate in the struggle, I have no clue. What I do know is the following: The walk of shame is a million times worse in a cop costume, just because you’re dressed up like something doesn’t mean you possess the magical abilities that the “real” character does, and there is something weirdly satisfying about reliving your childhood. Have a happy Halloween and best wishes on the costume search.

Taking a walk in someone else’s tap shoes Hannah Clark Reporter

“Stomp, shuffle, hop, flap, heel, toe.”

Aaron Parkhurst, ensemble dancer in “TAP: The Show,” stands before me. Actually, “stands” is incorrect. He is jumping around, peppering the air with sharp sounds and deftly performing a tap move. He shouts an onomatopoeic explanation, “stomp, flap, stomp, scuff!” I look down at my own black tap shoes, which refuse to behave like his. Around me, other dance students tap through the complicated move at one-eighth his tempo. I am attending a master class session, and I’m slowly realizing that dancing through life isn’t as easy as it sounds.

Last Thursday, “TAP: The Show” visited Chadron. Before the cast of TAP took the stage, they sat down on Memorial Hall’s main stage and met with members of CSC’s dance honor socioty, Nu Delta Alpha, and tap students from the local Consuming Fire School of Dance. I was among these eager ears, and I listened as the cast answered questions about dance, life, and marrying the two. Naturally, when the eight professional tappers offered to teach their moves, I slipped on my shoes and clattered on stage. While I climbed up the stairs, I felt quick and coordinated. After I saw Parkhurst lay out an pulse-stopping tap riff, I didn’t make that mistake again. Compared to the lithe tappers, my feet were molasses and my sounds bumbling hammers.

Their percussion was clear and precise, but their personalities impressed me even more.

The cast patiently taught every tapper, some of whom were less than 10 years old. The com-

show, which was a shorter performance for patrons of Hershey Park. Their camaraderie showed on stage and off, and even when they talked about the inconveniences of life on the road, they were thrilled to be touring. When, during their trip to Chadron, the on-board bus lights went out, the cast told ghost stories.

Chris Large, a tall, aptly-named dancer, loves Chinese food. On the road, he and Sebastian Goldberg invented Chinese pizza, which they described in delicious, General-Taos-detail.

Carissa Gravelle, the tallest female dancer, would attend culinary school if she couldn’t dance.

Along with their non-dance passions, the cast shared with me the improvised portions of the show. During every performance, the dancers have “a challenge”. Sarah Mangold, for instance, kicked out double wings, an impressive feat when you’re dressed like Shirley Temple.

Finally, I learned about every dancer’s intense passion. When I asked the cast about their greatest challenge, Maria Logan, the female vocalist, said, “It’s hard not to know if we’re going to have another show. We love it so much.”

From the “TAP” master class, I took away a few important lessons. In the preforming career, a dancer’s future is often stuck in the limbo of contracts and scheduling. A dancer should preform their piece like it’s the last time, because soon, it will be. Finally, it is a rare and special privilege to see a performer both as a person, and as an incredibly talented artist. If you ever meet a dancer, try taking a walk in their tap shoes. You might be surprised how they feel.

‘Face of social work program’ snags scholarship Tatum Renken Contributor

Of the 140,000 members of the National Association of Social Workers- which is divided into 56 geographical chapters -112 student members, two representing each chapter, are selected annually for the association’s scholarship. Last year, Chadron State College’s own Dani Grothe was the undergraduate recipient of the “Nebraska Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers” scholarship.

When asked about her achievement, Grothe attributed receiving the award to influences other than herself. “They (NASW) are based in Omaha, so they hear mostly from Omaha and Lincoln schools. I don’t think they hear from the western side of the state that much, and I think that might have caught their attention.” Grothe said.

Though Grothe was humble about her achievement, CSC social work professor Bruce Hoem was more than willing to speak about Grothe’s achievement. “[Dani] highly deserves this award. She is a very exceptional student. She is a model for what we want of our students.”

Grothe, a senior majoring in social work, enjoys giving her time to the field. “She volunteers for everything,” Hoem said.

“Sometimes I actually have to discourage her from doing so because she wants to take on everything.”

Echoing Hoem’s words about her being a model, Grothe has been told by others that she is sometimes seen as the face of the program because of her extensive participation in social work activities.

If Grothe is the face of CSC’s social work program, Hoem said he would like to see other students follow Grothe’s example. Hoem specifically would like other students reaching outside of Chadron and the western side of Nebraska, especially in regards to scholarships.

“It is absolutely important [for students to apply themselves outside of Chadron]. Things like this award are published statewide, and people pay attention to it.”

Hoem noted that it also helps CSC and its social program when students do so. “There’s a lot of social work students in Nebraska,” he said, further explaining that many are in the eastern side of the state and that, because of this, sometimes CSC can be overlooked. “People who did not know CSC has a social work program learn that we do, and a pretty good one at that.”

Grothe also believes other students should apply themselves outside of CSC. “I encourage all social work majors to apply for this scholarship… [and to] get involved with the eastern side of the state.”

Grothe went on to say that she hopes a CSC student can apply and win the scholarship next year. “Bring it back to Chadron,” she said, smiling.

Grothe plans to attend graduate school at the University of Nebraska-Omaha after she finishes her undergraduate schooling at CSC. She plans to be involved in counseling and mental health therapy.

In the more recent future, Grothe will take part in the professional social work program’s post-traumatic stress disorder conference on the 13th of November.
