A small fleet of earth-moving equipment arrived at CSC last week to prep the ground for phase one of the Rangeland Center’s construction.

Sampson Construction, general contractor for the project, called in Scottsbluff-based Sunshine Holdings LLC to perform the site’s dirt work, Dale Grant, vice president for administration and finance, said Tuesday.

Phase I includes construction of a $3.3 -million arena, extension of utilities and a roadway to the site.

The utility extension will occur after the site’s ground work is completed, due to a subcontractor request, Grant said.

“The group that is doing that [the utility extension] wants the dirt work done first,” Grant said.

CSC administrators predict the arena’s steel frame to be on site before the end of November, and estimate project completion by October 2013, he said.

Chuck Butterfield, professor and applied sciences department chair, said Tuesday that future rodeos wouldn’t be housed in the indoor arena, but that the space would allow the rodeo team’s members the ability to practice in the winter.

Senate dissatisfied with communication Sara Labor Lifestyles Editor Student Senate lost its effectiveness when it lost its membership quorum at Monday’s meeting.

Susan Schaeffer, faculty adviser, asked members of student senate if they knew anything else about the new logo designs that had been introduced a few weeks ago, although the topic was not present on the agenda. The majority of senators expressed that they had no idea that a new logo and website were even being designed before it had been reported in The Eagle. The same students also expressed that they were disappointed that students were not being consulted on these topics.

“I’m personally a little offended that we were not even made aware of the change,”

President James Bahensky said, after saying that CAB was the group that announced that students could vote on their favorite new design.

Other senators added that they had not known anything about the design change, and that they had not voted because they were not aware of the design change, or that they had not voted because they were upset that students didn’t have a bigger part in making such a big decision.

Since the voting, no one present had heard anything about the new design.

Aaron Prestwich, interim executive director of student life, said that he would be happy to bring these concerns back to an executive board.

During the logo discussion, several senators left the meeting, which prompted its abrupt end.

Because of the loss of quorum, Senate was unable to continue the meeting, including voting on amendments that had been previously brought to the table. After several moments of confusion, T.J. Thomson, vice president, dismissed the group.

In other business, Bahensky discussed the leadership conference that took place at Wayne College on Friday and Saturday. According to Bahensky, there is no wi-fi in the dorm rooms, Wayne does not have key fobs, and several dorm buildings do not have air conditioning. Bahensky said that Wayne does have good entry signs, each building advertises what departments are held in the building and each door also has an entry mat advertising the name of the building.

“In comparison, we’re doing really well for what we do. We should be proud of where we come from,” Bahensky said.

Homecoming was the main topic of discussion at this week’s CAB meeting.

Dani Buckley, CAB president, said royalty voting is currently going on until noon today. Some clubs didn’t submit a royalty nomination, according to Buckley, and can no longer submit a nomination.

Buckley also said that the bed sheets are hung and that everyone can vote on their favorite bed sheet in the Student Center.

The Spirit Rally takes place tonight at 6:30 p.m. in Armstrong. The coronation will take place at this time. Royalty nominees must attend, Buckley said.

The Homecoming parade will be Saturday. Judging for floats and cars begins at 9 a.m. The parade will end on the Deans Green where the “Carn’evil” will begin.

In other business, Kellie Aye, treasurer, said that free movie night saw 36 extra people. $216 dollars were allocated to cover the last 36 people. Aye said that CAB has $7,985 in unallocated funds.

IN BRIEF On Friday, CSC’s IT Department sent an email to all students stating that their EagleMail accounts would soon be upgraded with a new framework– Office 365.

“Office 365 is a set of powerful email, web, and collaboration tools that can help you work faster and gain skills for the workplace,” the email stated.

The IT Department also included a link to a page with more information stating the software allows people to create presentations, collaborate with classmates, and instant message.

Andrew Schmid, webmaster, said Wednesday that the IT Department would not release any additional information on Office 365. He said his department would release more information in the future, and that students would have to wait till then to learn more.

Butterfield said that CSC wouldn’t have the opportunity to host a rodeo at the college until phase three or four.

“Until we get to phase three or four, the primary use of that [the arena] would be classes such as our livestock production course,” Butterfield said.

“Eventually, we’re supposed to have an outdoor arena.”

The campus master plan calls for a greenhouse component to be housed adjacent the new Rangeland Center, although it won’t be constructed until after 2014, Grant said.

“We have got to get the lab building built first before we consider those,” Grant said.

Once completed, But- Butterfield terfield said the building would house a three-bay greenhouse. The first bay would be for teaching collections, such as the college’s plant ID and grass systematics courses.

“It would allow students to interact with live plants rather than viewing them pasted to a piece of paper,” Butterfield said.

The second component would house the greenhouse’s research bay, which would allow for a bug-free, controlled environment for plant experiments.

The third bay would be dedicated to horticulture and would allow increased opportunities for beautifying campus, Butterfield said.

“My goal is to make these improvements part of the regional community,” Butterfield said.

EDITORIAL — THE EAGLE’S VIEW

Homecoming ought to be more inclusive Homecoming is a special time of year. It is a time for blessed union between an institution’s current student body and the droves of alumni who return to celebrate their Alma mater.

Homecoming traditions date back to the early 20th century. Some of the earliest events included the prototypes for today’s homecoming standbys such as a formal dance, election of royalty, a parade through town, and pep rallies, all surrounding a central football game (especially one against a long standing rival).

Several schools came up with the various constituent homecoming components before the practice spread and became the norm around the country.

Over the years, homecoming traditions have adapted to changing times and climates.

Years ago, a Chadron State Homecoming celebration always featured a bonfire on C Hill.

Such a practice today would not be prudent, although the tradition lives on in a ceremonial—albeit flameless—lighting of C Hill.

This year’s celebration also offers Chadron State’s answer to the growing national obsession with zombie apocalypse scenarios.

Some institutions, whether lacking or disinterested in a football program, have adapted their homecoming to center around another sport. Some campus communities gather around soccer or ice hockey. Others center their events around more than one sport.

Despite living in the 21st century, our homecoming has changed little, while our institution has changed tremendously.

Chadron State has been lucky to have the consistency of a football game to cheer at and celebrate every year.

However, our campus is co-ed, and so too our exciting array of team sports.

Might we not also celebrate other sports for homecoming as a campus and community?

Our volleyball team is scheduled to be away during our homecoming festivities.

While volleyball may not be the center of our school’s homecoming celebration we would no doubt benefit from scheduling the team to be at home rather than away for homecoming.

If we can support—nay, promote!—a zombie homecoming, we can ensure the intrepid ladies of our volleyball team are home to chance being munched upon by the undead like the rest of us!

To my dismay, during the second presidential debate President Obama suggested restricting the rights of American’s by reinstating the Assault Weapons Ban. In 1994, Congress passed the Federal Assault Weapons Ban that outlawed the production on 18 models of firearms, based solely on their cosmetic appearance. This ban did not care about the function of a firearm, but sought only to remove firearms with “military” appearance.

Firearms, such as semi-automatic AK-47 rifles, were banned. Yet the same rifle with a civilian style stock and a non-military appearance was perfectly legal. The change in appearance did not have any impact on the function or capability of the weapon, but merely served to calm the fears of those scared by military-type firearms.

Since the ban expired in 2004, many may not remember it’s impacts. But I recall being banned for a decade from long range rifle competitions because I owned a banned rifle.

Imagine how upsetting it was when someone told me that I could no longer use a severalthousand-dollar, custom-built rifle in competition because of its appearance.

I don’t know about you, but my guess is that not many criminals invest in an expensive, match-grade rifle before going on crime sprees. This ban on the appearance of weapons is nothing short of prejudice on the level of racism. When someone talks about the

types of weapons to overthrow a government assault weapon ban, I think of Nazis holding color charts to the eyes of children to short that becomes unjust. The Assault Weapons Ban and all other firearm bans interfere with them into categories. this American right.

‘2016: Obama’s America’ good film, flawed logic Spike Jordan Reporter

I was reluctant to watch Dinesh D’Souza’s film “2016,: Obama’s America” but I saw the necessity to develop an informed opinion about it. If you haven’t seen it, it’s basically the conservative version of Michael Moore’s “Fahrenheit 9/11,” aimed not at swaying undecided voters, but reinforcing what conservatives already believe about the President. While the production value was really good, the content was questionable.

While some of the arguments were “facts”, the film draws my ire mostly because of a statement D’Souza made toward the beginning of the film.

“You’re comparing America to its own highest ideals, and in your eyes, America is falling short.

But don’t you realize that in criticizing America for falling short of that standard, you are actually kind of conceding America’s moral superiority?”

The quote above was from D’Souza’s discussion with Rev. Jesse Jackson about whether or not the American dream is “colorblind.” It’s a train-wreck in any context, however, and here’s the problem with using that logic: it leaves the door open for me to apply that same structure to D’Souza’s central thesis.

Lifestyles Editor Too often I have heard someone is voting for one of the candidates in this presidential race because of religious or moral views. In fact, when it comes to candidates like Mitt Romney, some people say they are hesitant to vote for him because he’s a Mormon.

Now, let’s get one thing straight. I don’t dislike Mitt Romney because he is a Mormon. I dislike Mitt Romney because, well, take out the second “m” in Mormon and you’ll know what I think about him. Too often people have let their judgment in a political race be swayed by moral values. Somehow, today’s voters seem fixated

on what a candidate’s stance is on gay marriage, abortion, and the death penalty.

I am socially liberal; I have a lot of gay friends who I think should be allowed to marry the person they love, and I don’t want the government telling me what to do with my body. But that is not why I support Barack Obama.

I am an Obama supporter because I go to school with hopes of bettering myself, while I work two jobs making minimum wage. My family makes minimum wage. No one in a position like this wants to vote for a man who wants to tax the living daylights out of her while giving tax breaks to the wealthy. And in a small town like Chadron, there are plenty of people in the same position.

As far as I know, there aren’t a whole lot of multi-millionaires in Chadron. So why is it that in small town America, so many people vote for the person who wants to give tax breaks to big businesses and millionaires, rather than low paid students, or teachers, or laborers trying to scrape a living?

The reason is many people vote based on their religious beliefs rather than looking at more se-

rious issues. In a small town like Chadron, one’s likely to find social conservatives, who believe that marriage is meant to be between a man and a woman and that abortion should be illegal. I still hear far too many people who want to vote based on religious affiliation. “The Bible says being gay is wrong, so I’m going to vote for Mitt Romney,” is a common mentality.

With our economy the way it is and with America quickly falling behind as the world superpower, this kind of thinking is only going to hold this country back. Rather than getting stuck on one issue such as gay rights, look at the other issues we are facing today. Maybe this won’t sway who you are voting for at all. Maybe it will.

People should not vote purely based on religion or moral standings. We must start thinking of what we want to see from our economy. Voters should start thinking about how much they value education in America, or clean roads, or new jobs, or clean energy. Stop thinking about gay marriage and abortion. Because when one votes based on religious beliefs, they’re not helping anyone.

ever, Ralston said in that moment “I’m gonna see this through to the end.”

Ralston said this is the first step everyone should take in every aspect of their lives: deciding not to quit.

Ralston used a camcorder over the next few days to say his goodbyes. According to Ralston, this was the boulder’s first gift. “It showed me what was really important.” Ralston said that he realized that none of his life mattered; it was the relationships in his life that really mattered.

“Our boulders show us what’s important to us,” Ralston said. “It’s not just what you do, Aron,” Ralston said to himself. “It’s who you are.”

Ralston said that the trailer for the movie “127 hours” ends with, “There is no source on Earth more powerful than the will to live.” However, Ralston said “I think a lot of us know that there is a force more powerful than that. There’s love.”

Ralston spent about six days in the canyon, surviving on a dehydrated burrito and eventually his own urine. “Gives you perspective on what a bad day is. Did you have to drink your own urine?” Ralston joked.

He tried once more to cut off his hand and found that he could not cut through the bone. On the fifth day, Ralston even carved his own gravestone on the wall.

On his fifth night, Ralston experienced an out of body experience, walked through the rock wall and found a living room with a little boy. “I did see daylight,” Ralston said. “And it’s because of him.”

The next morning, Ralston decided to try one more time to get out, because he was determined to see his family again, and to one day see that little boy.

Ralston used the boulder to break his own arm, then cut through the skin. When he had finally cut off the trapped hand, Ralston said he was euphoric. “I stepped out of my grave and into my life.” Ralston said.

Ralston hiked out of the canyon and even repelled down a rock wall until he found a family who gave him water and helped him signal a rescue helicopter.

Ralston’s mother had begun contacting people several days after Ralston went missing. His family helped send out a rescue team. “It wasn’t just the helicopter that saved me,” Ralston said. “It was my mom.”

Ralston continued on to speak about how important family became to him after that. From his mother and father, to his sister, to his close friends, he tried to do more things with his family and friends.

Ralston now has a son, Leo, who he and his wife named for the courageous little lion. “He gave me the hope and strength for the night I almost didn’t get through,” Ralston said. Ralston also said that if he had to do it over again for his son, he would. “There’s someone in your life you’d cut your arm off for too.”

Today, Ralston continues to hike, climb, and raft. He has also been part of search and rescue teams, and is a wilderness advocate.

Ralston’s message is not just a message of survival. It is his message of love and hope. Ralston encouraged the tearful audience to embrace their boulders.

“Without the boulders, we wouldn’t know what’s important.”

Eagles beat Cowboys, break into rankings Barrett Browne Reporter After defeating New Mexico Highlands University 36-33 on Saturday in Las Vegas, the Eagles have a serious chance to make a playoff push.

“As of now we just need to continue to take care of our business and focus on a new game for the next three weeks,” Head Football Coach Jay Long said.

The Cowboys set the pace in the first quarter of the game by scoring the first 10 points with a run on the inside and a 49-yard field goal.

Chadron’s first score came in the second quarter when quarterback Jonn McLain, senior of Chadron, found inside receiver Cody Roes, senior of Chadron, for a three-yard touchdown reception.

Eagles then tied the game when kicker Alex Ferdinand, sophomore of Rapid City, S.D., kicked a 40-yard field goal.

On the ensuing drive, Highlands completed a 53-yard pass, which lead to their second touchdown of the day. After a series of punts from both teams, Highlands kicked another field goal just before halftime to make the score 10-20.

Defensive end Keifer Burke, senior of Brady, led the Eagles defensively with eight total tackles, four sacks, and one forced fumble.

“Keifer had a huge impact on not only the game but also on our teams’ momentum,” coach Long said, “four sacks in one game is an incredible stat.”

Chadron State caught a break at the beginning of the third quarter after a holding penalty brought back Highlands’ 98-yard kickoff return.

Highlands would then go on to kick a field goal.

Chadron matched the field goal on their next drive, when McLain scored his second touchdown of the game with a pass to wide receiver Allan Schmaltz, senior of Rapid City, S.D. Within the first minute of the fourth quarter, Highlands kicked another field goal to make the score 20-26.

Chadron responded and took the lead after McLain found wide receiver Chapman Ham, junior of Rapid City, S.D., for a 25-yard touchdown pass.

McLain ended the game with 368 passing yards by completing 35 of 64 attempts.

forced a fumble that safety Phil Rivera, senior of Apple Valley, Calif., recovered to give the Eagles the ball at the CSC 47-yard line. Ferdinand would then kick his fourth and final field goal of the game, for 34 yards.

In the final minute of play, McLain of Chadron found Schmaltz for a 21-yard touchdown pass, and the lead. Following Chadron’s score, Highlands still had 36 seconds left on the clock for a chance to get in field goal range. But their hopes were denied when freshman safety Cole Montgomery of Casper, Wyo., came up with an interception to seal the win for the Eagles. This was Highlands first RMAC loss this season.

As of Tuesday, Chadron was ranked 24th in the nation and second in the RMAC. Chadron State’s record now stands at 6-2 overall and 5-1 in conference play.

This Saturday is Chadron’s homecoming and the team will be playing Western New Mexico.

Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m.

“Like I said earlier, we focus on a new game every week and the guys are very excited to play at home for homecoming this Saturday,” coach Long said.

Eagles lose home-game filled weekend Molly Wedan Sports Editor After traveling two weekends in a row, the Chadron State volleyball team hosted three games this past weekend.

However, the results weren’t what the team had in mind.

“We got caught playing down to teams rather than maintaining our level of play,” interim Head Coach Janel Baily said.

On Thursday, action started off slow, but in the second and third sets, the hitting percentages were .278 and increased to .351. The Eagles blocking increased as well.

Jessica Jester, junior middle hitter of Cheyenne, Wyo., and Mallory Irvine, junior middle hitter of Ravenna, both tallied eight blocks.

However, the Eagles couldn’t hold off a fifth set rally by the Thunderwolves.

Pueblo managed a .333 hitting percentage, led by Angela McAdams with 14 kills. Kristina Harter, senior libero of Colorado Springs, Colo., countered the Thunderwolves kills with 25 digs.

Coming off the loss, the Eagles played Western State College University on Friday. Western showed up when it was needed, and swept the Eagles 25-22, 25-21, and 25-23.

Makenna Christ led the Western Mountaineers with nine kills, and the teams hitting percentage was .147.

Molly Dolson, setter for the Mountaineers, had five kills, while assisting 32 times and contributing 20 digs.

Irvine hit 15 kills for the Eagles, and Erika Roybal,

sophomore of Denver, had six more. On defense, Harter had a match-high 25 digs.

On Saturday, the Eagles played Adams State Grizzlies and the story was much the same. The Grizzlies swept the Eagles 25-19, 25-20, 25-19.

Adams State dominated the first set, with a .333 hitting percentage. Chadron then responded with Irvine’s 11 kills, and the second set featured 11 ties. The Grizzlies three consecutive points gave them the win. In the third set, things heated up when there were 14 ties and five lead changes. With the score being 24-16, the Eagles made a three point run, but it wasn’t a match against Adams Deprece Washington’s final spike.

“The team and I would like to thank the crowds from last weekend, we appreciate the support,” Baily said.

The Eagles play Colorado School of Mines and Colorado Christian University this Friday and Saturday. Then they host Black Hills State on Tuesday and Halloween costumes are welcomed attire.

Cross country competes at RMAC Championship Molly Wedan Sports Editor Chadron State’s cross country team competed in their first RMAC Championship on Saturday in Colorado Springs at the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs. For it being their first season as a DII team, Head Coach Ryan Baily was quite impressed.

“They competed hard against the circumstances,” Baily said.

There were 14 women teams competing and Chadron came in eleventh. The men’s team came in twelfth out of thirteen.

The women had to run a 6K race while the men ran a 10K. For the women, Ashley Riesen, senior of Chadron, came in first for the team and 29th overall. Her time was 24:28.20, just a bit over a minute ahead of Jayme Nunes, freshman of Alliance. Nunes placed 55th overall with a time of 25:42.90.

Becca Volf, freshman of Wood River, came in 60th with a time of 25:56.10.

On the men’s side, Domingo Torres, freshman of Gering, finished first for the Eagles with a time of 28:18.20. Torres finished 57th out of 105 overall. Three male runners came in the eighties range. They were Alex Johnson, senior of Kearney, Evans Koech, freshman of Nairobi, Kenya, and Nathan Faulkner, junior of Morrill. All of them ran the course within 29 minutes.

The next race for the Eagles will be the South Central Region Championships on November 3 in Denver, hosted by Regis University. Only seven runners can compete in either genders events. The top five women teams and top six teams for the men from the South Central Region Championship race qualify for the national championship event.

“We need to get everyone healthy and I want them all to have their best race of the season. That’s our plan, our goal, to run well,” Baily said.

LAST MINUTE COSTUMES: Take a white T-shirt and write “Go Ceiling” on it. You’re a ceiling fan. Take a black T-shirt and put white strips of duct tape on it, then tape a fork to it. You’re a fork in the road. Carry around an empty picture frame and hold it in front of you. You’re a self portrait. Get creative, there’s always fun, last minute ideas.
