Senate swears in silent senator Justine Stone News Editor

Senate is now full after swearing in a High Rise senator who cannot vote.

Dusty Runner was sworn in as the High Rise senator. Runner is a freshman so he cannot vote until he has 12 credit hours but he can sit in as a senator now. He has already brought issues to Senate including getting an ice machine in High Rise. The vote was unanimous with two senators absent.

Senate had $114,768.61 in unallocated funds at the beginning of the meeting.

Senate allocated no more than $14,300 for a Leadership Summit in November. This amount includes costs for hotel, food, and travel for three speakers. The summit was brought up to Student Senate three weeks ago.

The speakers will include JoAnne Owens-Nauslar, Brian Banks, and Nick Scott.

Senator Evans said that students would attend the speakers because they each target a different audience.

Owens-Nauslar will focus on health and leadership at 7 p.m., Nov. 18 and will also hold break out sessions all day. Banks will be speaking about sexual assault awareness and false accusations at 7 p.m., either Nov. 19 or Nov. 20. Scott will present about overcoming huge obstacles in your life at 7 p.m., Nov. 21. These events are open to the community.

The vote was unanimous with Senator Portillo abstaining and two senators absent. Senator Portillo declined to discuss the reasons why she abstained to vote.

Senate allocated no more than $2,000 for Free Movie Night on Nov. 22.

The Health 101 email that is sent to all students will cost $3,774 to renew. Senators will vote on renewing next week.

An orientation for the senators will be hosted in a few weeks so their obligations can be discussed.

Senate will watch a demo at next week’s meeting about Uber cars.

Student clubs keep campus busy Justine Stone News Editor

The treasurer’s report was missing at this week’s CAB meeting due to Chris Green’s absence.

CAB representatives were encouraged to communicate their opinions on the Health 101 email with the student senators because Senate is deciding whether or not to renew the subscription.

The company that brought Bongo Ball to CSC contacted CAB and offered a two for one deal. The offer included bringing Zorb Racing and Bubble Ball to campus for $2,000.

CAB will discuss dates and more information about the event in future weeks.

The Social Work Club is hosting Trick or Treat So Someone Can Eat from 5-7 p.m., Saturday. Members will be walking around the community asking for canned food items.

A men’s and women’s ensemble will be hosted at the Art Center at 3 p.m., Sunday.

Social Science Club will host a debate over the death penalty at 3:30 p.m., Wednesday.

CSC Diversity Committee, CSC Native American Club, and Chadron Native American Center will be hosting a Pow Wow in the Student Center from 2 p.m. - 5 p.m., Nov. 21.

Admission is free and prizes will be given for the top three places of each dance style: rabbit dance, men’s traditional dance, and women’s shawl dance. For more information contact David Nesheim at dnesheim@csc.edu.

Free Movie Night was moved to Nov. 22.

Wayne State College offers free taxi services to students from 10 p.m. – 2 a.m., Thursday through Saturday nights. Senate might decide to make the services free to students. Students can download the phone app to use the service. Senate wants to use this service to prevent drunk driving.

Nine senators attended the Wayne State Conference. Peru State and Wayne State College Senates were also there.

One subject that was discussed at the conference was creating a board policy to have a smoke-free campus on the Chadron, Peru, and Wayne State Colleges. A survey will be sent out to students regarding this topic.

Another survey will be sent out asking student’s opinions about getting iPads or laptops for each student.

Peru State discussed drug issues on their campus and Wayne State brought forward their student participation and sexual assault awareness on campus.

A general assembly will be hosted for Senate to meet with all the subsidiary clubs on campus to discuss topics to improve on campus.

BRIEFS Oxfam Hunger Banquet Students in Shaunda French’s CA 239 Event Planning and Leadership class are hosting CSC’s Oxfam Hunger Banquet Nov. 16. Anyone wishing to attend should contact students in one of the two sections of the class or French at sfrench@csc. edu or 308-432-6302.

Each person is asked to bring three canned food items to donate to the food pantry. The pantry asked specifically for jars of peanut butter, chicken broth, canned meat, dry milk, canned fruit, canned veggies, canned spaghetti sauce, mac n’ cheese, canned beans, boxes of non-sweet cereal and/or standard pasta.

There will be two sections of the event in the Student Center Ballroom, one at 5 p.m. and one at 7 p.m.

The guest speaker for both sections will be Pastor Ann Sundberg of Immanuel Lutheran Church.

French participated in an Oxfam Hunger Banquet at the University of Central Missouri while working on her masters program.

“I think it’s important for the community to be aware of the poverty issues that are prominent in the local, regional, national, and global levels,” French said.

Professor shares dissertation at Graves Lecture Anh Le Reporter

Work spouse relationships are based on many common themes, and they have both positive and negative effects on a person’s life. Shaunda French, assistant professor of the Social and Communication Arts department, talked about this relationship in her presentation, 7-8 p.m., Tuesday in room 111 of the Rita E. King library. It’s the third lecture of the Fall 2015 Grave Lecture Series.

The title of the lecture was “My Confidant, My Coworker: The Interpersonal Relationship of Work Spouses.” It focused and discussed work spouse relationships and the influence they have on an individual, both at work and at home.

tionships. To start off, she developed a prequalifying survey. The participants would be qualified if they answered six of eight question correctly. The result was fewer than 50 percent of people who took the survey qualified for interview.

To continue the experiment, she started in-depth interviews with 30 participants.

There were 24 females and six males, from rural Nebraska to New Orleans. They have numerous jobs. However, French said she was surprised that there were more same sex work couples than expected.

There was a discussion at the end of the lecture to ask questions about the problems or opinions in minds which could be developed into future research.

Peggy Hinman, a motivational speaker, will wrap up the Fall 2015 Grave Lecture Series on Nov. 10 with a presentation based on the book “8 to Great.” The lecture is free and open to public.

EDITORIAL–THE EAGLE’S VIEW

Senate advisers need to reevaluate obligations In our Oct. 8 edition of The Eagle, our editorial called for Senate advisers to take a larger role in Student Senate activities. We asked advisers to provide more advice and to help guide Student Senate.

At the Oct. 12 Senate meeting, advisers spoke on the editorial, asking senators if they had a complaint about the advisers and what they were doing. The conclusion that senators and advisers drew was that they believe advisers are doing their jobs correctly and don’t have any concerns.

At The Eagle, we disagree.

“We are here to support you,” Susan Schaeffer, Senate adviser, said Oct. 12 at the Senate meeting. “We are not here to tell you how to run Student Senate…You are adults and we are not going to treat you like any less than adults.”

Good. We would appreciate this statement, if it was true.

Adults and professionals have to be willing to admit they make mistakes, something Senate seems unable to do. If Senate acted like adults they would be grateful for any advice given to them from those who have more experience.

Even the President of the United States has advisers he turns to in time of need.

We never asked advisers to run or dictate Student Senate.

In our Oct. 8 editorial, we stated, “We do not expect Senate advisers to run Senate meetings or to control everything about Senate.” We merely asked that advisers give more advice.

Advisers and senators need to understand the responsibilities and the point of an adviser. They are there to guide, to offer advice, to help teach students, not to control everything. There is a difference and we don’t think advisers are seeing the difference.

By not offering advice in any way, advisers are making a decision and giving advice. By not guiding, advisers are saying they don’t see a problem with anything Senate is doing, and they agree with everything Senate is doing.

Mathew Brust, another Senate adviser, asked senators if they would like it if advisers made statements like: “We do not feel that one week is enough to meet with your constituents, and we strongly recommend you take two weeks.”

As adults, senators should ask for this kind of advice, advisers should willingly give this advice, as unwelcome as it might be, and senators should consider the advice.

Senators have a duty to listen to not only their advisers, but also their constituents and take advice from them. Senators should seek out and listen to their constituents’ advice, and they should also seek out and listen to the advice of the advisers. That’s why advisers are there.

Column Congrats Eagles for making through the first half of the semester! Now it means the second half is going to fly by.

Seeing that time will be passing quickly, remember to write down the date for November’s Free Movie Night on Nov. 22. “Mockingjay Part 2” will be playing that night, so we are excited to see this new release.

Movie night is not the only events you will be seeing on campus in the near future. A Pow Wow hosted by the Native American Club, a debate about the death penalty hosted by the Social Science club, and a movie night hosted by the Landsurfers club will all be on campus. See flyers around campus for more details.

Looking for a way to give back to the community join the Social Work club for their Treat or Treat so Someone Can Eat program. From 5-7 p.m., Saturday, the Social Work club will be going from door to door in the community asking for canned goods for the food pantry. If you’re interested please contact the Social Work club.

Syerra At Large Syerra Wycoff Bagshaw Contributor Senators moral duty and obligation is to vote in policies that their constituents want; in the recent Senate meeting Student Senate deliberated upon the reinstatement of the Health 101 service provided on campus. A large amount of student fees goes towards this service and it provides helpful tips and reminders on how to stay healthy, manage course loads, sexual assault awareness on campus, etc.

My concern as a student senator at-large is that the service is not being utilized to its full capacity, and as such is not worth the money being allocated towards it. Upon re-

SENATESPEAKS A word from the Student Senate President This week Senate is pleased to announce that we have a full Senate! We swore in Dusty Runner as our High Rise representative Monday at our meeting.

Before fall break Senate hosted an open forum to discuss the possibility of hosting a leadership conference for all of campus to attend. Senate voted to approve three speakers to come to campus for the first ever Student Senate Leadership Summit.

Brian Banks, a former player for the NFL Falcons, will be coming to campus to discuss the issues of sexual assault awareness and overcoming great difficulties.

JoAnne Nausler, a CSC alum, will be coming to campus to speak on fitness, well being, and business leadership for the students.

Nick Scott is also coming to talk of overcoming great odds and becoming a leader. Scott is a nationally recognized powerlifter and has started organizations to raise awareness for chair-bound people.

Be looking around campus for the posters that will specify when and where these speakers will be. Have a great week!

Take time to thank cross country supporters Sarah Townsend Lifestyles Editor Last weekend my team and I traveled to the RMAC Cross Country Championships in Alamosa, Colorado. The meet was hosted by Adams State University, which is one of the top distance running schools in our conference and in D-II on a national level.

The trip to Alamosa takes roughly eight hours, without stops. It’s not uncommon for our team to go to meets and have only our other team members there to cheer us on from outside the course boundaries.

Cross country is a lot different than other sporting events; other sports are actually fun for most people to watch, while during cross country we literally just run.

That’s why when people from our school or our families can make it to a meet, it is

a really big deal and we appreciate having them take the time and make the effort to come and support our team.

Last weekend we were surprised and very excited to have our school’s president, Randy Rhine, and Athletic Director Joel Smith in the crowds cheering us on.

I feel like I can speak for my team when I say how much we truly appreciate the support we receive not only from Rhine

and Smith, but also from the school as a whole, our boosters and our parents.

I would like to focus more on the support that the athletes get from our school. Our administrators really care about our teams. I have seen this first hand with the traveling Rhine has done to watch us run (ex. He traveled all the way to Fayetteville, Arkansas, to watch the Chile Pepper meet!).

While that is impressive, we also have to remember everyone else that helps us be able to do what we do for our sports.

For the most part, our professors and instructors try to work with us and help us succeed in the classroom so we can succeed in our specific sports.

Our coaches and the assistants for every team want the best for us and sacrifice countless hours of their days trying to make something happen for us athletes.

Our friends and families do not get to see

us as much as they would probably like to because we spend the majority of our days and weekends at practice or in competitions. We think that we sacrifice a lot, but all of these people sacrifice a lot for us too.

As my time as a student athlete is coming to an end, I have realized just how much I appreciate every experience I have had at Chadron State, and as an Eagle athlete. My professors, coaches, parents, teammates and friends all deserve many more thanks and appreciation than I give them.

Most of the time, I am “too busy” to thank these people and tell them how much their support means to me, and I bet a lot of athletes feel the same way I do. Athletes, I challenge you to tell your support system how much you appreciate them and I will do the same. Because they all deserve to know their efforts are not going unnoticed.

Benghazi hearing raises many questions

One of the largest spectacles happening in the United States, especially in light of the ongoing debates and vying for the upcoming presidential seat, is the House committee hearing regarding the attacks that happened in Benghazi. For those who are unaware of either the hearing or the attacks themselves, Hillary Clinton is currently under investigation for what she and her team could have possibly done to prevent those attacks.

The attacks themselves happened on the anniversary of an already painful event for the United States, the anniversary of the fall of the World Trade Centers. In Benghazi, Libya, four U.S. officials were killed; one of these officials was a U.S. Ambassador, the first killed in the line of duty since 1979.

Where the controversy comes in with this event, is the question as to who should be taking the blame for these attacks. The U.S. Secretary of Defense and current presidential candidate Clinton is under fire for having had knowledge of the threat of attack beforehand, and not acting until after the fact. She had even gone as far as to attempt to conceal emails that would have supported her knowledge of the attacks and the nature of these attacks.

Initially after the attacks, they were not categorized as terrorist attacks by any group, but Clinton’s testimony seemed to suggest otherwise. Not long into to her testimony, Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, noted one of Clinton’s emails sent to her daughter the same night of the Benghazi attacks regarding to the deaths of U.S. officers and the fact that they were killed by an “Al-Qaeda-like group”. It could just be me, but a reference such

as that sounds like a terrorist attack.

One of the larger concerns in my eyes is that this is one of our presidential candidates and a popular candidate at that. I find that when it comes to politics, which is a touchy subject for all, avoidance of the discussion of our decisions to vote for certain candidates is a norm, and that is completely acceptable.

The only concern is that for people, especially the people who are our own age, we must consider if we are looking into all factors when making decisions to vote. Are we watching all of the debates and keeping up on current events, or simply voting for the person who has the most fame? That is not to say that Clinton would not still be a good candidate, she does have a good amount of previous political work under her belt, but with this current scandal and questions of fault, there is a lot to be considered.

There are many questions that can be asked: Could she have prevented the Benghazi attacks? Was her response to these attacks the proper one? Was there a lack of honesty in the presentation of these attacks to the public? Was all of this played down in an effort to better her chances during the upcoming election? As the trial continues and more details unfold, I would simply urge others to keep informed, you never know what you are going to learn next.

Banzhaf competed against 124 women in the 6K, where she stopped the clock in 22 minutes, 34.8 seconds. That time marks the second best time in CSC history at the 6K and a career best for Banzhaf. Stacy Girard set the best time at 21:59 in 2013. Banzhaf was the lone Eagle runner to make All-RMAC First Team.

“The whole race, I was able to keep my focus grounded on God, and I was able to truly push myself,” Banzaf said.

The women’s cross country team jumped up five places from last year’s finish to place sixth out of 14.

“The women picked up five spots from last year just because they are a better team than last year,” Head Coach Brian Medigovich said. “We didn’t graduate anyone over this past year, and with good summer training, we’re a lot better as a team overall.”

Adams State won the meet with 20 points, followed by Western State, 48; Colorado Mines, 96; Fort Lewis, 143; University of Colorado-Colorado Springs, 163; and CSC, 204. Rounding out the top 10 schools were Colorado Christian in 7th with 207 points; CSU-Pueblo, 8th, 215; Metro State, 9th, 224; and South Dakota School of Mines, 10th, 271.

The second Eagle to cross the line was senior Rebecca Wolf, of Wood River, who finished 41st in 23:44.5. Jayme Nunes, senior of Alliance, was next in 56th in 24:01.4.

Not far behind Nunes, Margaret Vinton, junior of North Platte, crossed in 59th with a time of 24:06.7. Running the course in 24:17.4, junior Sandra Palayo, of Cozad, finished 61st.

Coming in 67th was Alyse Henry, freshman of Rock Springs, Wyoming, in 24:23.8. Running 95th, in 25:27.2, was senior Sarah Townsend, of Douglas, Wyoming. Taylor Allison, sophomore of Gordon, rounded out the Eagles finishers in 104st in 26:08.3.

“I was incredibly proud of our team,” Banzhaf said. “We moved up five places from last conference.”

Adams State’s Noel Prandoin, sophmore of Santa Fe, New Mexico, won the race in 20:43.7.

In the men’s division, there were 122 competitors. The men’s team finished ninth out of 14 teams with 225 points in the 8K race. Adam’s State won the men’s RMAC title earning 36 points followed by Colorado Mines, 37; Western State, 74; University of Colorado-Colorado Spring, 154; Black Hills State, 167; CSU-Pueblo, 189; Metro State, 203; New Mexico Highlands, 209; CSC; and in 10th place, Fort Lewis, 256.

Evans Koech, senior of Nairobi, Kenya, placed 25th in 25:55.8, while junior Dylan Stansbury, of Crawford, finished 34th in 26:08.6.

“I felt pretty good. I was able to survive the elevation, and I am now used to running at elevation competitively,” Stansbury said.

Levi Avila, sophomore of Mitchell, finished 60th in 27:01.7, and sophomore Eric Yager, of Hot Springs, South Dakota, came in 69th in 27:21.2. Phill Duncan, sophomore of Chadron, finished 76th in 27:35.9, while junior Kyle Dietsch, of Sheridan, Wyoming, was 78th in 27:37.1. CSC’s sixth men’s runner, Hank Jackson, junior of Lingle, Wyoming, finished 82th in a time of 27:46.9.

Taylor Dick, freshman of Douglas, Wyoming, was the final finisher for the Eagles in 117th place in a time of 32:31.6.

Colorado Mines’ Dan Mahoney, junior of Westminister, Colorado, won the men’s race in 24:26.

Both teams will compete Nov. 7 in the NCAA South Central Regional Championships in Canyon, Texas, with top four teams qualifying for NCAA Championships.

Medigovich said that all the teams from the RMAC, Lone Star Conference and Heartland Conference qualify for regionals.

“I’m really looking forward to what we can do at Regionals,” Banzaf said.

“I’m proud of what both teams did at Alamosa,” Medigovich said. “And we have been looking forward to Regionals all year. Regionals is back to sea level, which will really level the playing field.”

CSC to induct 10 former athletes to HOF

CASEY BERAN Sport: Football Position: D-line, Fullback Years: 1995-1999

JAKE HOLSCHER Sport: Wrestling Weight: 158-184 Years: 1995-2000

During his time in Chadron, Beran held the record for the most sacks as well as becoming the first Chadron State Football player to get both AllAmerican and Academic All-American Honors. He was also named RMAC all-conference first team three times. He was inducted into the RMAC Hall of Fame in 2013 and was a member of the Chadron State AllCentury Team in 2014. Beran graduated from CSC Magna Cum Laude with a degree in Human Biology and is now an Orthopedic Surgeon.

Holscher was a three-time NCAA D-II National Wrestling Tournament Qualifier: 1996, 1998, and 2000. He also earned All-American honors in 1998. Holscher’s record was 92-58 while at CSC. He also earned national academic honors two times as well as being voted the Eagles’ most dedicated wrestler three times. Holscher is currently a project manager for a concrete shoring company in Colorado. He also competed in the Race Across America powered by Trane, a race to promote tissue and organ donations, that started in California and finished in Maryland.

Clarke holds the third place record for career receptions and the second place record for career yardage at CSC. He was given AllRMAC, All-Nebraska, and All-West Region honors following his senior season. Clarke was also on the Daktronics First Team and a Football Gazette All-American. He was also a member of the 2014 Chadron State All-Century Team. He currently lives in Alliance where he is an accountant and helps coach the high school football team.

Long was the starting center for the CSC Football team from 19971999 and the heavy weight wrestler for his first three years and he lettered four years in each sport. He was named second team all-conference his junior and senior year. As a wrestler, he was named to the RMAC all-star team in 1998 and went to wrestle in Bulgaria. Coach Bill O’Boyle once said that Long was the most intense player he had worked with. He also received the Don Beebe Most Inspirational Player Award following his senior season. Long is currently in his fourth year of being the head football coach for Chadron State.

MIKE FACKRELL Sport: Football Position: Tailback Years: 1996-1999

STEVE NELSON Sport: Football Position: Tight End Punter Sport: Track and Field Events: Discus, Javelin Years: 1972-1974

Fackrell started at tailback as a true freshman in 1996. He became the first underclassmen to rush for 1,000 yards. He was the RMAC Freshman of the Year as well as first team all-conference. Despite two serious injuries during the following three years he still received second team All-RMAC two times. He now teaches Industrial education at the middle school in his hometown of Evanston, Wyoming.

He is also the head freshman football coach as well as the throwing coach for the track team.

Nelson was a dual-sport athlete for CSC in the early 1970s. He played tight end and punter on the football team, as well as a thrower for the track and field team. Nelson holds the record for best punting in one game, averaging 51.4 yards against Colorado School Mines in 1973.

While throwing for the track and field team, he placed in several meets.

Soon after graduating in 1974, he began teaching and coaching at Alliance High School. In 1999, he began commuting to Chadron to help coach pole vaulters. He continued doing so through the 2015 season.

CSC officials keeping silent about volleyball coach Preston Goehring & Jordyn Hulinsky Sports Editor & Managing Editor College officials are still remaining quiet about the status of Head Volleyball Coach Chris Wells, who was missing from three games last week and who did not make a road trip to New Mexico this weekend.

Sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that Wells is under investigation, but the type of investigation and the reasons for it remain unclear.

“At the moment, his (Wells’) status is still undetermined,” a source close to the situation, but who asked not to be identified, said last week. “There should be a report by the end of next week regarding his status. He is

under investigation, but the reasoning why hasn’t even been released to us.”

An email to Wells, sent Wednesday for comment, went unanswered.

Meanwhile, college officials aren’t talking about whether there is an investigation, or about Wells’ status, including whether he’s been suspended.

An email exchange with Athletic Director Joel Smith produced no information.

“I would refer you to Alex Helmbrecht,” Smith wrote Oct. 21, deferring questions to Helmbrecht, CSC’s director of college relations. As of Tuesday, Smith repeated his prior statements.

“I am not at liberty to discuss personnel matters. Personnel matters are confidential,”

Helmbrecht wrote in an email Oct. 21, in response to questions about Wells’ status. He also declined to comment in an email Tuesday afternoon.

One of two home games Wells missed was the Oct. 16 match-up against Colorado School of Mines, Golden. In his absence, Coaching Assistant Whitney Roth was listed on the game programs as “Acting Head Coach.” However, as of Friday, CSC’s athletic website still lists Wells as head coach and Roth as coaching assistant.

Interviewed on Oct. 21, Roth, too, declined to comment.

Another source, who also spoke on condition of anonymity, said CSC officials asked the volleyball team to keep information

about Wells to themselves.

Wells was hired as the interim head coach in summer 2014, after former Head Coach Janel Baily resigned when her husband, former Track and Field Head Coach Ryan Baily, accepted a job at Colorado State University, Fort Collins.

Despite a dismal 3-24 record in 2014, the college hired Wells as permanent head coach at season’s end in December.

Before coming to CSC, Wells served as assistant head coach at New Mexico Highlands University, Las Vegas, in the 2013-2014 season, according to Jim Deisler, Co-Interim Athletic Director at NMHU. Deisler added that Wells was not fired, but instead left NMHU to accept the interim head coaching position at CSC.

JIM RHODES Sport: Basketball Position: Forward Years: 1966-1967

Rhodes helped lead the team to a 22-6 record in the 1966-67 season basketball. In that season, the Eagles won the Nebraska College Conference and the NAIA District 11 Championships. CSC also won a game at the National Tournament against Millersville of Pennsylvania, 83-66. Rhodes held a 24.2 points per game average through that season, he averaged 24.4 throughout his entire career, which leads CSC’s record book. Rhodes holds the record for most points in a single season with 676.

Rhodes and his wife have lived around Indianapolis for almost 50 years managing a fabric company. He volunteers as a youth basketball coach.

Aside from the second half of his red-shirt freshman season Schulz was the starting right offensive tackle from 1996-1999. As a junior, Schulz was first team all-conference, all-Nebraska selection, and second team Rest Region. He was named second team all-conference his senior season which was also followed by an invitation to play in the Snow Bowl, the D-II All-Star game. Schulz was only the fourth player in CSC history in the AllStar game. While he was at CSC, the Eagles won BRAD SCHULZ or shared three RMAC Championships. He now Sport: Football Position: Offensive Tackle lives in Durango, Colorado, where he is a manager at SoundTraxx, an electronic manufacturer.

Years: 1996-1999

ANN SMITH Sport: Track and Field Position: Coach Years: 1980-87

Smith, a graduate in 1970, is credited with organizing and coaching Bridgeport High School first volleyball and track teams. The next year, the track team earned second place at the state meet, and they won in 1974. After receiving her master’s in 1977 from CSC, she returned three years later to coach the cross country team and track and field team. She led eight NAIA District 11 track and field championship teams. Smith has been the recipient of several awards including the Pathfinder Award from the National Association for Girls and Women in Sports and the CSC’s Distinguished Alumni Award. Smith passed away Oct. 29, 2014.

Watt, who began athletic training before he graduated in 1980, quickly became the primary trainer for the Eagles. He earned his master’s degree in 1981 from Central Missouri State. After earning his master’s, he went back to CSC for a training internship, in order to become a certified trainer. Watt was hired

by CSC in 1994 after serving one year at the University of Arkansas-Monticello. Watt is currently the head trainer, supervises about 12 student trainers, and also teaches safety, first aid, and injury prevention courses. He has been a full professor since 2008.

CSC football team wins a close one at BHSU Preston Goehring Sports Editor Quarterback Matt Vinson, sophomore of Box Elder, South Dakota, led a two-touchdown fourth quarter comeback against Black Hills State University, winning 39-38. The Eagles improved to a 4-4 record, 3-3 in the RMAC. BSHU fell to 0-8, 0-6 RMAC. The Eagles, who scored the first 22 points of the game were led by Vinson, who completed 18 of 35 passes for 181 yards and three touchdowns. The first was a five-yard toss to Kyle Hooper, junior of Alliance, early in the second quarter.

Zac Bargen, senior of Chadron, caught the first of the fourth quarter touchdowns, with under five minutes to play. Bargen also caught a 36-yard pass on a fourth and nine to keep the next offensive drive alive.

“It was an obvious pass situation,” Bargen said. “I was just focused on trying to find an opening in the defense. The line gave great

time and Matt did a great job of finding me and making a great throw. I was able to gain some extra yard on a great downfield block by Andrew Rios. With Danny and Kyle out, being an older receiver, I want the ball in those situations. Being a receiver you just have to focus on the route and make plays if the opportunity presents itself.”

The game tying touchdown was a 20-yard pass to redshirt freshman Matt Reader, of Appleton, Wisconsin. Alex Ferdinand, senior kicker of Rapid City, South Dakota, hit the game winning extra point with less than two minutes left in the game. This was Reader’s first career touchdown.

“I was pretty excited,” Reader said. “It was cool that my first career touchdown helped us take the lead late in a close game. This wasn’t our best game overall but to be able to pull it together in the fourth quarter and come out with a win is always a confidence builder and gives us momentum going forward.”

Derek Jackson, sophomore of Pueblo

West, Colorado, led the ground game for the Eagles. He scored the first two touchdowns of the game, finishing with 94 yards on 20 carries. Cody Paul, junior of Seal Beach California, ran for 54 yards, while Kevin Coy, redshirt freshman of Davenport, Florida, gained 70.

Bargen led the Eagle receivers in yards with 73 off five receptions. Redshirt freshman Max Gray, of Arlington, Washington, caught nine passes for 68 yards.

The defense also shined late in the fourth, thanks to a late interception from Dylan Furrier, senior linebacker of Tucson, Arizona, that sealed the victory for CSC. Furrier also caught a pass from senior Cole Montgomery, of Casper, Wyoming, for a two-point conversion following Jackson’s first rushing touchdown.

Brian Wood, junior of Stockton, California, also intercepted a pass, while recording seven tackles. His twin brother Ryan Wood recorded nine tackles, eight of which were unassisted.

Furrier led the Eagles in tackles with 11.

Yellow Jacket quarterback Ryan Hommel,

freshman of Highlands Ranch, Colorado, threw for 307 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions. He also ran for 99 yards and a touchdown.

Although the Yellow Jackets had nearly 100 more yards of total offense, 532-434, the Eagles forced three turnovers to keep them in the game.

The Eagles will face New Mexico Highlands University noon, Saturday, at Elliott Field.

“We are looking to come out and put together a solid game,” Bargen said. “On the offensive side of the ball, I feel that our line will be able to get a good push up front and allow our outstanding backs to have a solid game.”

The Cowboys are currently ranked last in the RMAC with a record of 0-8, 0-6 in conference play.

“Our biggest challenge all year has been being consistent,” Reader said. “If we can avoid the roller-coaster ups and downs of the game on Saturday and bring a consistent effort we should play well.”

Eagles win 1 in New Mexico Jay Feltson Reporter Last weekend Acting Head Coach Whitney Roth and the Eagles volleyball team traveled to New Mexico to play against New Mexico Highlands University and Western New Mexico University.

In the first game against Western New Mexico Rudy Leasau, junior of LaMesa, California, and Gaby Varela, sophomore of Dorado, Puerto Rico, tied for the most kills in the three set match. Both Leasau and Varela had 10 kills a piece giving them 20 out of the team’s 35 kills. Varela also led the team in aces with two. Sina Mauga, senior of Ewa Beach, Hawaii, also contributed one ace giving the Eagles three aces on the night. Madison Webb, freshman of Loveland, Colorado, played a major role offensively by giving the Eagles 25 assists out of the team’s 32 total assists.

Sierra Winkle, freshman of Tucson, Arizona, had a good game defensively giving the Eagles a lift with 11 digs, Leasau also contributed nine total kills and Webb had four kills together the trio had 24 kills out of the

team’s 38 digs.

Even though the Eagles fought hard and showed improvement from various players, it wasn’t enough to pull out the win against the Mustangs, eventually losing 3-0.

In the second game of the weekend, the Eagles dominated just about every statistical category on the box score against the Highlanders. Offensively, Lelalelei Nomura, senior of Pago Pago, American Samoa, led the Eagles with 11 kills in the three-set match.

Also giving a much needed boost offensively was Webb, who had a total of three aces. Nomura and Varela also had aces giving the trio five out of the teams seven. Webb again led in the assist category with 34 out of the team’s total 40 assists of that evening.

Defensively, Chrisman led all players with seven blocks. Nomura contributed with five blocks and Mauga had four. Winkle and Nomura tied for the digs with 14 a piece to not only lead the Eagles in digs that night.

The Eagles came out aggressive and it showed by the way they dominated the game from start to finish, the Eagles were too much for the Highlanders, eventually winning the match 3-0.

Friday, the TV game show “The Price is Right” came to CSC when Curtis Stevens, senior from Ogallala, hosted the game from 9-11 p.m., Friday in the Gold Room. Close to 50 people showed up and joined the game.

Michael Hall, senior of Broadwater, said he, “watched the game show when he was small. It’s fun to take part in.”

The rules of the game are like the TV version.

Students competed to win prizes by guessing the price of certain items.

Contestants were randomly decided by picking from a bucket full of name tags. The prizes included a coffee maker, movies, a lamp, an iHome wireless, a Bluetooth speaker, and more.

Students competed in small games such as the pricing game, in which participant had to choose two items having the same price.

Another was the race game, in which contestants had 45 seconds to pair the price with the products.

At the end, there was a raffle giving away prizes for those whose names were not called for the big show.

“I like the game,” Daniel Espinosa, sophomore from Rapid City, South Dakota, said. “The way they did it can help college students get the most bang for the bucks.”

CSC students learn money skills Cousteau tells tales of adventure at CSC Ahn Le

The Resident Life Association hosted a session called “Bankrolling College Style” from 7-8 p.m., Monday in the Gold Room in CSC’s dormitory complex. The event focused on providing tips to save money and making smart choices financially.

About 30 people attended the events.

There was a raffle at the end of the session which gave away many prizes that related to the topics they talked about, including books from Dave Ramsey, an American financial author.

Jacob Rissler, Eagles Ridge RD, of Gillette, Wyoming, was the speaker of the session. The event helped students to make correct financial choices

and informed them about credit score.

The first thing that he talked about during the presentation was Dave Ramsey’s “7 Baby Steps for Money.” It helped students to pay the debts after colleges and to plan on saving and retirement funds in the future.

He spoke about budgeting your money to not over-spend. He also talked about credit score and how it affects your purchases. There was a discussion at the end of the presentation for students to ask their remaining question about finance.

“I learned how to budget my money, the good and bad of credit score,” Connor Besse, sophomore of Denver, said. “But the most important, I know today is Dave Ramsey’s ‘7 Baby Steps of Finance,’ it will help me a lot after college.”

The Residence Life Associate, organized Just Dance-a-Thon at 7 p.m., Saturday in the Student Center Ballroom.

Becca Barger, 19, sophomore of Atkinson, and Cody Cooper, 21, junior of Gothenburg, were the organizers of this dance.

“A lot of people asked about this program because it represents different dances and songs from other cultures,” Cooper said.

Students could wear their casual clothes because

there was no dress code. Last year, Just Dancea-Thon was successful, but this time the number of people who visited was low with only about 20 people.

“A lot of people left for football game,” Barger said.

The game was in Rapid City the same day against Black Hills State University. Several students said that they didn’t know about this dance, but they would have come if their friends told them.

In spite of everything, organizers from RLA didn’t get lost, they were dancing, and had fun spending Saturday evening with friends.

Oktoberfest comes to CSC Anastasia Zbarazhskaya Reporter

The Residence Life Association tried to create an Oktoberfest festival for CSC students at 6 p.m., Tuesday in the Gold Room.

Oktoberfest is an old festival which is annually held in Munich, Germany. This festival has a long history. The first mention of Oktoberfest was on Oct. 12, 1810. Oktoberfest is the largest festival of its kind in the world. About six million people take part in Munich festival to try the most famous beer in the world.

The last Oktoberfest in CSC was approximately four years ago, so this event is not new, but still unusual because it is difficult to imagine Oktoberfest without drinking beer, which is not allowed on CSC’s campus.

But the RLA staff overcame this problem without difficulties–organizers replaced real beer with apple juice or sparkling water. Glass bottles looked like real beer in glass bottles, which helped make

this Oktoberfest seem more real.

Generally, this festival was fun and interesting.

Besides drinks and food, there were different games available.

“Oktoberfest helps to explain a few games from different cultures which help to educate our students,” Lane Swedberg, 22, senior of North Platte, said.

Students could play games like water pong, compete in pretzel eating contests, and another game involved the German flag while blindfolded. Winning these games resulted in symbolic prizes.

“I like this event, moreover I’m half German, and I was at the real festival one time, visiting my relatives,” Olga Grushina, 21, junior, Syktyvkar, Russia. “I really like this drink. This event reminds me about home.”

Many people came to Oktoberfest which shows that it aroused students’ interests. According to questionnaire, students would love to have the same event later because it’s fun, and helps them learn something new.

Oceanographist Jean-Michel Cousteau spoke at Memorial Hall Auditorium 7 p.m., Thursday.

Jean-Michel Cousteau, a French native, came to share his stories about his adventurous life and to represent his society, Ocean Futures Society, to communicate to the people his love and concern of marine life.

Cousteau gave a hour and half speech, while sharing videos and answering questions.

“Protect the ocean and you protect yourself,” Cousteau said.

He explained that from the creation of new technology and appropriate equipment, people are now able to film in slow motion and focus on all kind of creature behavior which can not be seen with the naked eye.

Those equipment allowed the public to watched a video made by the Ocean Future Society, called “Secret Ocean.”

The water system needs to be taken care of because we all drink

from the ocean, Cousteau explained this is why he educates the general public how our own lives are affected by the actions toward the ocean.

“I hope the world will make the right decisions to work with the oceans as we work a business, that the human creativity will allow us to create fish farms which will make a lot less CO2 emissions, no transports, for example to bring fresh fish to places like here because the fish would have grown in a place much closer, there wouldn’t be any frozen fish anymore,” Cousteau said.

He shared how his father Jacques-Yves Cousteau created the scuba also called the aqualung, which changed everything in learning the oceans better than ever.

“Follow your dreams do what you want and even if right now you do not know, one day you will wake up and tell yourself that is want I want to do,” Cousteau advised.

Cousteau’s presentation was well received by attendees.

Childhood obesity is a growing epidemic in the United States. According to the CDC this has affected 30 percent of children, making it the most common childhood disease. Obesity has more than doubled in children and quadrupled in adolescents in the past 40 years. Mayo Clinic defines obesity as having an excess of body fat. Obesity is not just a cosmetic concern.

Being obese increases risk of diseases and other health problems, such as heart disease, diabetes, and high blood pressure.

Children who become obese are just as likely to have these health problems as their parents. Children are having to take the same medication as their parents to manage their blood pressure and cholesterol.

Not only are their physical problems as-

sociated with childhood obesity but there are emotional problems that can occur as well. A recent report in the British Journal of Developmental Psychology says that girls as young as five years old are beginning to have issues with body image and girls as young as eight are being diagnosed with eating disorders. At the ages of five to eight the last thing these kids should be thinking about is their body size.

Today’s environment plays a major role in shaping habits of children and adolescents. Children are constantly surrounded by environmental influences that demote the importance of physical activity.

Such as TV commercials that are promoting unhealthy food and eating habits.

According to Obesity Action Coalition, approximately 40 to 50 percent of every dollar is spent on food outside the home. The bad part about that is the food is unhealthy and

portion sizes have increased so people are consuming more calories than they would just eating at home.

Children in today’s society have shown a decrease in physical activity. With computers, video games, and TV becoming more and more popular they tend to spend more time on those things rather than playing outside. Lack of daily physical education in schools plays a role in obesity as well.

According to Obesity Action Coalition only eight percent of elementary school and less than seven percent of middle schools and high schools have daily physical education classes. In the past, physical education was required on a daily basis.

Schools play a major role in childhood obesity because that is where the spend most of their time for most of the year. Treating childhood obesity is not as easy as treating adults because they don’t quite understand

the risks of what can happen to them if they stay on the same path. It is recommended by the CDC that parents take their child to a nutritionist who specializes in children’s needs.

Schools and parents need to start teaching children at a young age the importance of healthy eating and physical activity.

Parents need to be encouraging their children to be outside playing instead of staying inside playing video games for hours on end. Another thing we as a society we can do to help people who are obese is be supportive and understanding. It is sad that young kids are developing eating disorders because they feel they aren’t good enough for our society.

Childhood obesity is treatable and something that people need to start paying attention to because it is life changing to everyone involved.

Christensen’s art brings abstract ideas to campus Jessica Thiele Reporter

Elephant cutouts, old book covers, and random scribbling are just a few of the sights that will meet your eye when you look at the Todd Christensen art display in the main gallery of Memorial Hall on display from now until Nov. 13.

Christensen’s work embodies abstract ideas portrayed in a playful, yet intellectual, way. Sprinkled throughout the display are elephants, sketches of people in varying shapes and sizes, and old book covers and clippings.

The works are arranged in such a way as to draw the eye all the way around the display. One section is completely red book covers, while another is all blue. On some pieces he has drawn, Christensen scribbles his thoughts with the picture as if he is journaling.

In the sketch of an armchair, for example, he writes, “she sat there, she really did, please believe me.”

Another reads, “Do I draw a flow-

er for the same reason I draw a large body? Yes. What then, is that reason?

Observation. I draw that which I observe, that which I experience.”

Indeed, Christensen’s work does appear to center on what he has observed and experienced. From the bodies of all shapes and sizes to the cover of, “Language for Daily Use, Grade 3,” the entire three-dimensional display allows the observer to take on a light-hearted attitude and remember one’s childhood.

“I try to capture the sense of being overwhelmed with external forces, images, and ideas,” Christensen stated in a press release. “I find it important to break up theses ideas with images of small, ordinary or even random objects: a drawing of a pronghorn antelope, a paper bag, an abandoned shoe, a telephone.”

A South Dakota native, Christensen has been a fine-art painter as well as a location scout and manager for television shows and films.

Christensen has worked with the 2008 Oscar-winning, “There Will Be Blood,” and the 2007 Tommy Lee Jones film, “In the Valley of Elah.”

Zach Fischer, 18, freshman of Hartington, recites a song while reading the lyrics last Thursday during Late Night Open Mic Night.

Students performed poems, songs and other acts at 7 p.m., Tuesday at the Open Mic Night held by The Pit. This is an event held a few times a year at Chadron State College. All students had an opportunity to show their talents, from singing, to reciting their own poetry.

For instance, they could sing, dance, or tell jokes. Nine people

took part in it, but there was no prize for the winner this time.

Compared to the last year, only 72 people showed up to this event despite all of the efforts of The Pit’s staff.

“I was expecting that more people would come on this event, and took part in it, because last year Open Mic Night was really successful,” Maria Evtodieva, 22, senior of Syktyvkar, Russia, said.

According to opinions of some attendees, they enjoyed their time at the Open Mic Night, and they would like to have it again.
