Senate discuss NCSL Leadership trip, CAB talks homecoming Jordyn Hulinsky Ashley Swanson Sports Editor Managing Editor President Dillon Spies talked about the $18,500 budget for the NCSL Leadership Conference in November, which will be in Orlando, Florida, this year.

Along with the executive board, one female and one male from Senate will be chosen to attend the conference. Those interested must submit a hard copy letter to Spies or Chief Justice Jon Lordino detailing why they think they should be allowed to go on the trip, and why they think they would be a good selection. Once all the letters have been submitted, those nameless letters will be given to the Senate advisers, who will choose the male and female.

The $18,500 will go toward flights, registration, hotel rooms, food, and other expenses including gas to drive to Denver and possible emergencies. Lordino estimated about $1,400

per person on all items listed.

Dormitory elections have been tallied and the elected dorm representative for Edna Hall is Taylor Osmotherly; Marci Luton was elected as the dorm representative for Andrews; and Michael Hall was elected as the dorm representative for High Rise, Lordino said.

Vice President of Finance Kirby Krogman said there is $148,085.04 in unallocated funds.

Student Trustee Jacob Rissler expressed that he would like to have a tab under the Senate page so that he can write a synopsis of what happens at each Nebraska State College System board meeting. Senate approved of the idea.

Senior Director of Student Affairs, Enrollment Management, Marketing, and Student Services Pat Beu said he wanted Senate to think about a possible electronic health magazine that would be made available to all students. Senate will go more in depth on the idea at the next meeting.

CAB announced that they have $11,350 in unallocated funds.

“Welcome to the Jungle! Its homecoming week and I’m excited,” CAB Chair Kelsey Empfield said to start her report.

She then went through the week and the homecoming schedule. Wednesday night, CAB representatives decorated campus. At 7 p.m., Thursday coronation will be at Armstrong Gym. Bed sheet winners will also be announced at the coronation. After the coronation The Pit will have a jungle-themed dance.

Friday there will be a pep rally, the lighting of C-Hill, a volleyball game, and a bonfire.

Saturday, the parade will start at 9:30 a.m.; clubs that want to participate should meet at 9 a.m. Clubs are not allowed to throw candy— they have to hand candy to kids.

There is also a football and volleyball game and the Star Party that evening. A formal homecoming dance will be hosted that night in the ballroom.

The entire homecoming schedule is online.

Laure Sinn, CAB adviser, talked more about the homecoming schedule and gave a little more description of each event. The Star Party will begin at 8 p.m., and there will be Milky Way Bars and Starburst for students. Sinn will also be driving the campus golf cart for those wanting a ride from the Star Party to the formal dance.

The star party will be in the parking lot by Math/ Science building. Natural Sciences club said that the star party will also have prizes to give away.

There will be three telescopes set up that students will look through and will have to guess what they are looking at.

Rissler told CAB members that they should get on board with the pool proposal.

Sports Medicine club said they are selling homecoming T-shirts for $12. They will be handed out Friday and Saturday. Talk to Madison Malzahn for information.

Molly O’Connell of the Phi Beta Lambda club said they are selling raffle tickets for a Husker football game.

They will be selling tickets from 10 a.m.–6 p.m., today in the Student Center. Tickets are $1 a piece or $5 for six tickets.

Pool project ready for Nov. 4 referendum Ashley Swanson Managing Editor RN Western Community Health Resources Director Sandy Roes, and John Parton, member of the advocacy group, spoke to Senate Monday about details on the pool project.

For two years, the city council, community members, and CSC administration have been working toward the goal of a new pool.

It has taken two years to come across a project that is affordable and sustainable, Roes said.

Roes is part of the Swimming Pool Enclosure Enhancement and Development Option Committee, which has been a major part of this project.

A pool once stood in the Armstrong Gymnasium, but was filled, covered, and now stands as the weight room for athletes. Roes said the

existing structure of the city pool will be used in replacement of Armstrong’s pool.

The new pool will be converted into an indoor pool, and will cost about $6 million, which was reduced from the original price of $12 million. In order to pay for the pool, the project is relying on grants and a half-cent tax increase on all sales tax except for food. That’s $1 for every $200 a person spends.

The tax increase will only last until the $4 million in loans are paid off, and will stop after that goal is reached, which could take about 12 years, Roes said.

The new pool, which is set to be complete in December 2016, will feature a walking track that will run on the outskirts of the pool, but will still be enclosed to keep participants from the weather.

the hospital will have access to do easy exercise without exerting too much strain.

On the west side there will be a multipurpose room, which can be used for meetings, birthday parties, student events, and will feature a kitchen. Along with a dressing area, the locker rooms will be enhanced to give participants more locker, shower, and bathroom space.

The biggest changes to the actual pool itself will be the construction of a zero entry walk-in will be constructed for easier access, and there will be a splash pad and two slides installed.

As the pool is 25 years old there will need to be some infrastructure updates, Roes said.

Students and community members will be able to use the pool year-round, and students will have access using their student IDs. Roes also talked about the possibility for work study or internship positions for students, and classes can also take place there.

As CSC cannot participate in the capital

construction because the building is not a part of campus, it can help with the on-going function of the pool.

Partners in the project include the Chadron Hospital, CSC, the school district, and Pine Ridge Job Corps.

“This [pool] sounds like a good idea but won’t happen if the referendum doesn’t pass,” Parton said.

The Nov. 4 election will include the half-cent tax increase in order to pay the $4 million loans back.

Parton urged Senators to persuade other students to vote in the election. Students may register to vote in Chadron even if they are not from the area.

If they have the intention to live in Chadron, as most students do, then all they have to do is go through the steps required to register.

“The student body could make this happen,” he said.

Gamergate and the Quinnspiracy Richard Heule III

Join CSC’s wild jungle party Homecoming: a time of the year when everyone on-campus can use their creative minds and have some fun. Usually at this time of the semester, people can view club’s bedsheets in the Student Center, and hear conversations about ideas for their float. It’s exciting, busy, chaotic, and overall, the best time for students to be a part of the rising Eagle spirit.

Homecoming activities are not just for the many clubs on campus, but also for individuals.

It’s easy to pull a group of people together and create a float for the parade, just as it is easy to dress up for The Pit’s “Welcome to the Jungle” dance, and attend the spirit rally.

Don’t hide away in your dorm while others are taking advantage of the many events happening; go out and do something. Ask a club if you can help them pass out candy to parade watchers; participate in the lighting of C-Hill; or cheer on the Eagles as they go head-to-head against Regis, UCCS, and Western State.

In college there are more possibilities for fun and activities that are included in homecoming than there are in high school, and that in itself is reason enough to participate. If you have never attended a football or volleyball game before, this week is a perfect reason for you to break out of your bubble and watch at least one game of each sport. All of the activities going on are also good ways to meet new people. More students take part in the different festivities that are tied with homecoming.

Come out of your room and show your spirit and be proud to be a student at CSC and an Eagle. There are students, faculty, and staff that are very proud of the school and the many achievements across all aspects this campus has to offer.

If you are not a part of a club, grab some friends and participate in the spirit rally, bonfire, games, and other activities meant to bring the campus together as a whole.

Homecoming may be more fun if you are participating instead of just watching from the sidelines. Just remember, even the smallest acts of kindness go a long way, and that goes for helping with any or all of the events during this homecoming weekend.

he independent games community has been in uproar lately over a giant conspiracy, known as Gamergate. The conspiracy began when the ex-boyfriend of independent game developer Zoe Quinn leaked information online of how she was allegedly able to sleep her way to the top of the independent video game world; ranging from video game journalists, to other video game developers. After this “information” was brought to light, everything imploded, and the effect is rippling through the internet.

After the leak, the indie community was blowing up. Nearly everybody who was somebody within the community was making a comment about the debacle that would soon become known as the “Quinnspiracy.” It all came to a head after Zoe Quinn’s personal information was published online. Phil Fish, the creator of the game FEZ, took to Twitter to defend her, and had all of his companies personal information leaked on the internet, including social security numbers, development notes, and information regarding the people working at Polytron, his game company. After this, Fish announced his exit from the gaming industry. And that isn’t even the worst of it.

At the heart of this Quinnspiracy

was the website 4chan. Discussions on the site sparked a movement to donate money to a campaign that Zoe Quinn didn’t support, as most users on 4chan believed that Zoe Quinn was a horrible person. As a result, a crowdfunding campaign ran by The Fine Young Capitalists raised about $5,000, garnering a lot of backlash from hipsters with cultural studies degrees, such as Anita Sarkeesian. Don’t get me started on her.

The Fine Young Capitalists appreciated the support from 4chan, and even let the site create a character to be included in the project, known as Vivian James. However, somebody on Zoe Quinn’s side didn’t like this at all, and as a result, The Fine Young Capitalist’s information was leaked online, and the project was shut down by more internet vigilantes.

The debate still rages on, even though the majority of this happened over a month ago. Right now there is still discussion, as many of the video

game journalism outlets are refusing to cover the story at all, leading Quinnspiracy theorists to believe that the allegations of Zoe Quinn sleeping her way to the top were true, as the online source told everyone that some of the people involved worked at outlets such as Gawker Media. There is even speculation that the website 4chan is under new moderation, as any topics regarding the Quinnspiracy and Gamergate as a whole are being deleted, and users are being banned.

Now, what is my opinion on this?

I think everybody involved with this is on crack. It blows my mind that these people take video games this seriously! I’m not picking sides here.

If Zoe Quinn did sleep her way to the top, who gives a crap?! That’s nobody’s business! And it doesn’t help anyone when people like Zoe Quinn and Phil Fish are being sent death threats. That doesn’t help your cause! It makes people not like you! If you want to have a civil discussion about this, then do it, but you can’t just run around the internet talking smack about people you don’t even know.

Also, why the hell are people blowing this out of proportion? Gaming journalism is in second-to-last place on the chart of reliable journalism, just barely beating out the tabloids.

If you like video games, just play video games! Quit being some pathetic keyboard warrior and get on with your life!

’m not usually one for political bickering, especially not in a public medium, but something needs to be said to those who aren’t supporters or fans of our president.

It is late 2014. President Barrack Obama has two years left in office. Get over it.

It always baffles me that people genuinely believe that a change in president will make much of a difference in the way our country operates. Much like leveling accusations at people (or at a newspaper) without any proof is an excellent way to make yourself seem like an ignorant fool, so too is being outraged by absolutely nothing.

Last week, the internet, Fox News, and those with nothing better to do the world over universally cried out against a great injustice. What had shaken the nation to its core and instilled a deep-seated mistrust in our Commander-in-Chief? The fact that our president saluted two Marines with a coffee cup in his hand.

Wait, really? You can’t be serious. Okay, okay, let’s cut right through it and get to the facts. The president has never been required to salute the troops. Dozens of presidents prior to Obama never did the salute. It was popularized, but not introduced, by actor-turned-president Ronald Reagan. George W. Bush did the salute numerous times with a dog under his arm, but for some reason, that’s different. From a practical standpoint, what exactly is the man supposed to do? Put his coffee cup on the ground with a theatrical flourish and salute the Marines?

I’d say he’s a bit busy dealing with the slightly-more-important issues in Syria and Iraq. In truth, I don’t think there was anything Obama could have done differently that wouldn’t have been just as needlessly scrutinized. Congratulations to everyone who figured out from this incident that Obama hates America, wants ISIS to win, and is the worst president in the history of ever. Your ability to pull information that supports your viewpoints out of trivialities is remarkable.

In all seriousness, an issue of respect may be there, but it’s not nearly as serious an issue as people are making it. The real issue with the whole ordeal is less the salute and more the complete and total eradication of logic when politics, religion,

or anything mildly hot-button is brought up. I watch perfectly rational people turn into raving knuckle-draggers at the mention of Obama, “in God we trust,” or welfare. I have bad news for everyone: you are not entitled to your opinion. Sorry to spoil the fun, but entitlement is defined by Dictionary.com as “the fact of having a right to something.” Considering that it’s from opinions that wonderful traits like racism, sexism, and zealotry are birthed, I’d say it’s about time we revise this idea.

You are entitled to a well-informed opinion. Sound fair? You have infinite information at your fingertips at nearly all times.

Most people are constantly plugged into a phone or computer anyway. For the more old-fashioned, you have access to a mysterious relic known as a library. There is literally zero excuse in the year 2014 to be fighting and defending an opinion that has no factual ground. Nothing in your birth, bloodline, or “God-given” grace gives you the right to be offended when someone with facts disagrees with you on matters you know nothing about. Don’t use the word “entitled” when speaking about your opinion.

For that matter, if you’re going to be outraged by something, be consistent about it. Fox News correspondent Eric Bolling reamed the president for not having respect for troops, and then barely an hour later, asked if the first female pilot in Syria would be considered “boobs on the ground.” Ignorance is one thing. Hypocrisy is an entirely different ball game.

I’m sure this article will get accusations leveled my way about being a socialist communist card-carrying lefty. That’s fine.

I’m not looking for world peace, nor am I here to impress. I’m here to beg for a little common sense and consistency in conversation. If that isn’t alright, then we have bigger problems than a president’s need for caffeine.

’ve said this before: I grew up on a cattle ranch in rural Nebraska, I’ve sacrificed seven years of my life in service to this country, and I have a sticker on my desk in the newsroom that reads, “Coal, Guns, Freedom.” Call me a filthy liberal; I dare you.

So it probably comes at no surprise that I was one of the many fine patriots outraged

by Obama’s cavalier coffee cup salute. Considering that coffee is about the only sacred thing left in this country, for Obama to disrespect a drink like that is so egregious, I feel we need to bring this issue to the forefront of public discussion… …Just kidding, I honestly don’t care about the President’s sloppy salute. We have bigger problems to worry about here.

I wrote an article last fall about how the media gushed when they learned the reason Obama quit smoking; he was afraid of the first lady. The angle I used was that our news media has been failing its obligation to keep our society informed; by focusing on the minutia, they continue to feed our ignorant and disgusting obsession with the political personality cult. In my eyes the upset is distracting drivel; let’s pause for a second and queue a round of applause for my fellow talking heads; we continue to be functionally useless.

Around this time last year the conflagration in Syria was raging, but the news media mostly ignored that story because videos of headless U.S. journalists weren’t popping up on social media.

It’s now a year later, Syria is still burning, and we’re still stuck discussing some stupid, insignificant thing the President did.

If this is what liberals consider “progress,” you can count me out.

I am certain that criticism will always be one of the throes of public office; if you doubt the validity of that statement, just ask any member of last year’s Student Senate. Regardless of whether you love or hate the President, he still commands the world’s most powerful military. It’s because he has power that the news media maintains its professional obligation to publicize, scrutinize, and when necessary, critique his every action, ad nauseam.

But instead of critiquing something petty like the President’s saluting skills, let’s first discuss where that video actually came

from: the official White House Instagram account. This story is of note because the very office whose job is to manage the public’s perception of the President has painted him to out be an idiot. No comment.

To be fair, I can almost imagine being the underpaid press intern assigned to shoot the video of the President climbing down from the helicopter. I can also imagine how easy it would have been to upload the video, not realizing how Obama’s coffee cup salute would spark volumes of criticism from the crybabies at Fox & Friends.

I can also picture myself as an equally underpaid intern working at Fox News.

I’d spend hours scouring White House press releases; hunting for something the morning show anchors could rant about, but that video would be my godsend. I’d hand off the footage to the show’s producers, then wait on my Pulitzer for harrowing and tireless investigative reporting.

Perhaps that was a little too hyperbolic, but I think what makes this story interesting is not that the President gave a jackedup salute, but that we are even talking about it amidst all of the other things that are wrong with our government.

There are numerous points that we can use to criticize the President, like the fact that the bulk of our digital communications are still being intercepted, analyzed, and stored using illegal means. Or how about we discuss the mountains of dead civilians, which can be attributed to the administration’s secret drone strike program? It might be nice to hear legitimate criticism directed against the President for a change, but the investigative work required is both time intensive and quite expensive.

Conservative commentators won’t bother climbing that tree, especially when they can just grab at whatever the White House leaves hanging on the lower branches.

Despite having written reviews for the past three years, I still don’t know anything about theatre. Please bear with me.

I felt a considerable amount of anxiety when I walked to M-Hall Tuesday night for the CSC Theatre Department and Galaxy Series presentation of “Big River: The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.”

I hate musicals; a long-standing aversion that stems from some deeply repressed childhood memory. Burning on my psyche were vague impressions; a blizzard stranding my family at a relative’s house in the country, where I was repeatedly forced to watch a fuzzy VHS copy of “Annie.”

However, rather than triggering a similar traumatic episode, “Big River” broke from the fundamental aspect I loathe about musicals: pausing the action for the sake of cheesy musical numbers.

Chadron State College Theatre Department and the Galaxy Series presents the vividly told story of “Big River.” The play covers Mark Twain’s classic story “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn,” told by the infamous Huck himself.

In this story, the audience can go back to a time when humans were property and children ran amuck, hardly keeping notice of what the adults said.

Huck, played by Derek Phelps, senior of Sidney, is a wild boy who is being “raised right” by Widow Douglas, played by Hannah Clark, senior of Littleton, Colorado, and Miss Watson, played by Rebecca Lashmett, senior of Lusk, Wyoming; they took him in after his mother died and his drunk father disappeared.

Unfortunately, Huck runs into his no-good Pap, played by Douglas Valade, junior of Gering, who takes Huck from his temporary family to a cabin hidden deep in the woods. Valade portrays the face of a drunk; even in the song he sings his movements and slurred speech keep him connected to Pap’s character.

Duke and King are two escaped convicts who swindle their way from town-to-town on Huck and Jim’s raft, creating unscrupulous ways of taking people’s money.

Henderson and Steinhour work so well together, it’s easy to love and hate them. Duke, a dramatic fiend who tends to overdo every acting moment he does, has a not-so-small love for Shakespeare. King is not so dramatic as he is cunning. He preaches like a pastor but sins like a robber as he acts out fake lives along with Duke, making sure not to get caught by the law.

To add to the comedy is Tom’s group made up of six boys who follow Tom’s footsteps as if they were ducklings and he were the mama duck.

They fight but have a strong bond that’s never threatened by outside troubles.

Each actor played his or her character with a vivid context of what Tom’s crew actually would have acted like. There were the tough ones, the ones who quivered and became sick just at the sight of blood, and there were those who always picked the fights, even on something small.

Although a few cuss words are thrown into the comedic, hectic mix this play is an excellent way for families, students, and Chadronites to spend an evening. You’ll laugh, you’ll worry, and you’ll tap along to the beat of the songs. The cast and crew of “Big River” sure knows how to keep a person entertained. I recommend this as a must-see for those who enjoy a timeless classic.

Volleyball team earns 1 win at home Evan Brooks Reporter The Chadron State College volleyball team took on Western New Mexico University, New Mexico Highlands University, and Colorado State University-Pueblo in a three-game home stand this weekend.

Thursday, the Eagles took the floor against WNMU in CSC’s home opener. Entering the match, Chadron had never before defeated the Mustangs, who owned a 9-0 record against the Eagles prior to Thursday.

This time the outcome was different, with CSC earning their first-ever victory over WNMU by scores of 25-18, 14-25, 25-18, 28-26.

The Eagles hit .216 as a team en route to their four-set win.

“We basically had nothing to lose and everything to gain,” Middle Hitter Lelalelei Nomura, junior of Pago Pago, American Samoa, said.

“We went into the game with great energy. We knew it wasn’t going to be easy, but we played like there was no tomorrow.”

CSC and WNMU traded leads in the final set until Middle Hitter Alia Brennan, sophomore of Chadron, powered a hit between two Mustangs defenders to put an end to the match.

The Eagles finished their three-day weekend against CSU-Pueblo. The ThunderWolves defeated the Eagles in four sets 25-21, 21-25, 25-20, 25-19.

Chadron State (3-11, 2-4 RMAC) had trouble with the front line of CSU-Pueblo. Nomura and Brennan each contributed nine kills, Flaming had eight, and Roybal added seven. This was overshadowed, however, by Chadron hitting .055 and committing seven service errors as a team.

“We made a lot of unforced errors,” Nomura said. “The other teams didn’t beat us because they’re better. We beat ourselves, which is what we need to work on as a team.”

Gardner had 34 assists for the match, and Brennan and Nomura each finished with two blocks.

Bauer led the Eagles defensively with 26 digs. Outside Hitter Alexis Farris, freshman of Blair, and Outside Hitter Ashlyn Hanson, freshman of Seward, each added 12 digs. Nomura and Oddo had 10 apiece.

“Although the outcomes of Friday and Saturday were disappointing, there were times when we saw what this team has the potential to do,” Hanson said.

CSC will compete against Regis University Friday and the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs Saturday. Both matches begin at 6 p.m.

The Eagles had nine blocks collectively, led by Middle Hitter Ana Kasljevic, senior of Banja Luka, Bosnia, with six. Nomura assisted on five blocks.

The match was balanced for both teams. Setter Shelby Gardner, redshirt freshman of Colby, Kansas, dished out 40 set assists for the Eagles.

Friday, NMHU also displayed balance against the Eagles, as the Cowgirls came out 25-22, 25-17, 25-22 in the win over CSC. The Eagles played NMHU close in all three sets, but the errors throughout the game led to a quick defeat. CSC finished the game with 23 hitting errors, while allowing the Cowgirls to serve seven aces. The Cowgirls also had nine blocks.

Flaming finished with 11 kills and hit .318.

Roybal had a team high 13 kills, and Nomura added five.

Football team wins battle against weather, CMU Jordyn Hulinsky Sports Editor Despite uncooperative weather, the Eagle’s football team still came out on top of Colorado Mesa University, 24-13.

“The weather definitely changed throughout the game from being warm to cooler and rainy but that didn’t affect us as a team,” Linebacker Dylan Furrier, junior of Tucson, Arizona, said. “We were focused on finishing and winning the game just like any other. Our coaches talk about responding to adversity and not making excuses and we did that well against CMU.” CSC never trailed in the game against the Mavericks, even after a 37 minute lightning delay in the fourth quarter.

Quarterback Jonn McLain, senior of Chadron, completed 13 of 33 passes for 123 yards, including one touchdown.

Tailback Cody Paul, sophomore of Seal Beach, California, led the team in rushing yards with 133. He also tallied a touchdown. As a team, CSC put up 235 yards in the rushing game. Tailback Michael Madkins, senior of Sacramento, California, contributed on the ground with 74 yards. Inside Receiver Zac Bargen, junior of Chadron, caught three passes for 38 yards and led the team with receiving yards.

Wide Receiver Kyle Vinich, junior of Casper, Wyoming, caught two passes for 19 yards and one touchdown.

The special team blocked a Mavericks’ punt in the first quarter. This marked the fifth block for the Eagle’s special teams this season.

Defensive Back Ryan Wood, sophomore of Stockton, California, led the Eagles with nine tackles and one interception. Safety Lane Haller, senior of Gordon, tallied eight tackles, and Linebacker Courtland Joshua, junior of Donaldsonville, Louisiana, marked seven and a sack.

Going into the game, the Eagles were coming off a two game losing streak.

“Last week, we prepared the same as we always do for a game, but we were extremely excited and ready to get on the right track and start winning again,” Furrier said. “Losing games is never easy but everyone last week was ready to play to win, and we weren’t going to accept anything less.”

This week the team prepares for the homecoming game at 1 p.m. on Saturday against Western State University.

“This week is homecoming, but, like I said before, we are going to prepare to win like any other week,” Furrier said. “It’s a home game which is always excited especially with the large crowd we will get. We’re very excited to play at home and show everyone how we’ve progressed so far. We always put an emphasis on playing well at home and this is another opportunity to win in front of the alumni and protect the tradition that these former Eagle players created for us.”

Golf team finishes 14th at RMAC tourney Preston Goehring Reporter The Eagles traveled to Grand Junction, Colorado, for the RMAC tournament hosted by Colorado Mesa University. With a final two-round score of 714, the Eagles finished 14th out of 17 teams. Dixie State College won with a team total of 629.

Emma Harris, junior of Wahoo, and Kelli Haynes, freshman of Whitney, marked the best scores for Chadron, carding a 172 and 174, respectively. Schuyler Wetzel, junior of Hot Springs, South Dakota, and Danielle Brennan, sophomore of Ellsworth, both finished on Tuesday

with 184. Mikayla Gallagher, redshirt freshman of Lead, South Dakota, carded a two-day total of 194.

Karson Langley, freshman of Sidney, finished with a 199.

“Last week we struggled managing the course in Hot Springs. We focused a lot on our short game this week and it paid off. We saved a lot of strokes and made a good recovery from last week,” Brennan said. “We are still going to focus on our short game, we can always lose strokes there. I think we are going to also focus on approach shots to help eliminate our number of putts.”

The Eagles will finish the fall season at the West Texas A&M Crossover, Canyon, Texas, Monday.

Parker 1 of 167 semifinalists Jordyn Hulinsky Sports Editor The National Football Foundation (NFF) and the College Hall of Fame selected CSC’s Center Sam Parker, senior of Harrison, as one of 167 semifinalists for the 2014 William V. Campbell Trophy.

“It’s an honor to be nominated,” Parker said. “There are several guys on our team who fit the criteria to be nominated and all are well deserving of the recognition. I think that shows how much our team values education.”

The Campbell Trophy is awarded to a scholar-athlete who is in his final year of eligibility, has a GPA of at least 3.2, performs at an outstanding football ability, and demonstrates strong leadership and citizenship. Each school is allowed to nominate only one individual.

Sixteen finalists will be awarded a scholarship and will be announced on Oct. 30. As a finalist, students are awarded an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship.

The winner of the trophy will be named at the NFF Annual Awards Dinner on Dec. 9. The finalists will also be rec-

ognized at the dinner. In addition to the trophy, a scholarship increase to $25,000 will be awarded to the winner. The NFF Awards Committee chooses the finalists. This year’s sponsor is Fidelity Investments.

Parker maintains a 3.849 GPA in communication arts. He has been selected as a CoSIDA Capital One Academic All American in 2013, to the Omaha World-Herald’s All-Nebraska team twice, and the All-Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference first team in 2013. He was also selected three-times to the RMAC All-Academic team.

Having served as the event director for The Big Event, Parker volunteers on and off campus. Some of his volunteering experiences include speaking to high school students for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, mentoring for TeamMates, and reading to elementary students. Parker is also an ambassador for CSC. “I’ve got to thank Alex Helmbrecht, our sports information director, for going through the process of nominating me,” Parker said. “If it weren’t for God in my life, I wouldn’t have the drive to succeed both on and off the field. All credit goes to him at the end of the day.”

New York Times best selling mystery writer Margaret Coel speaks to an audience Thursday in the Student Center Ballroom about her book “Wind River.”

New York Times best-selling author Margaret Coel gave a lecture Thursday evening in the Student Center Ballroom as part of the Pilster Great Plains Lecture Series. The lecture was the opener for the Marie Sandoz Heritage Society’s 2014 conference.

A Colorado native, Coel spoke about her start as a journalist writing on the American West, and how research for a magazine article sparked her interest in the history of the Arapahos in her home state.

She began investigating the mystery of an Arapaho leader named Chief Left Hand. In her pursuit to track down where Left Hand learned to speak English, Coel discovered that she had enough information gathered to write her first non-fiction book, “Chief Left Hand,” which was published by the University of Oklahoma Press. She claims bragging rights to the fact that the book has never gone out of print.

Coel spoke at length about the struggles Arapahos faced after being displaced by white settlers migrating west in search of gold. She also mentioned how the mysteries she investigated in her non-fiction work inspired her to craft fiction.

The 18-book Wind River Mystery series is set on the Wind River Reservation in central Wyoming. The novels center on Coel’s main characters Father John Aloysius O’Malley, a Jesuit missionary; and Vicky Holden, an Arapaho attorney; as they seek to uncover a number of real mysteries, ranging from contemporary crimes and injustices to stories that have a deeprooted place in Arapaho Folk lore.

Coel discussed the process of interviewing Arapahos on the reservation, and the cultural barriers she encountered, and answered questions from the audience about her research-intensive writing process.

Minute games test students’ skills Jessica Thiele Reporter More than 70 students had 60 seconds to prove themselves Friday night at the Residence Life Association event, Minute to Win It, in the Gold Room.

RLA hosts Minute to Win It every year with a great turnout, and Friday was no exception.

There were 14 levels of games.

Chris Race, 20, sophomore of Omaha, said, “Spoon Frog was probably the most challenging game.”

What made it so tough?

“Getting the spoon to stay in place,” Race said.

Each game had a different amount of money students could receive. If students could complete the game successfully in a minute, they received money to exchange at the $25, $50, or $100 tables.

Some of the prizes included plugin scent oil warmers, card games, bean bag chairs, and giant boxes of pop tarts. The best prizes were worth the most money.

Ice cream with sundae toppings was provided along with pop, bottled water, and Gatorade.

Little Mix pushes anit-feminist message with ‘Salute’ Teri Robinson Photo Editor British artists have been making a name for themselves in the past, and recently a group has caught my attention, an all-female group consisting of four early 20 year-olds. Little Mix made a name for themselves after winning The X Factor in December 2011.

Since then they have released two albums.

Their most recent album is titled Salute and it became available to the U.S. in February. It intrigued me then; I enjoy every song, note, and lyric on this album. The order in which the songs are placed entices the listener to keep listening, and deters the listeners urge to skip songs. Jesy Nelson, Perrie Edwards, Leigh-Anne Pinnock, and Jade Thirlwall each bring their own unique style and sound to the group, and each individual strength benefits the overall composition of the songs and, ultimately, the album.
