SOCIAL WORK WORKSHOP OPEN TO ALL

CSC STUDENT RELEASED FROM JAIL

The Social Work Senior 435 Class will be hosting a workshop from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Wednesday in the Student Center Ballroom. The workshop is focused on educating CSC students and community about sexual assault and how to report an assault.

A CSC student left Dawes County Jail Tuesday after posting his bond, 10 percent of $10,000. Police arrested the CSC student early Monday morning on several charges, including a terroristic threat felony, authorities said.

Student, accused of felony, released after posting bond Jordyn Hulinsky Managing Editor

A CSC student left the Dawes County Jail Tuesday after posting a $1,000 bond following his arrest early Monday morning on several charges, including a terroristicthreats felony, authorities said.

Chadron police arrested Kyle Mousseau,

18, freshman of Rushville, at about 1:45 a.m., Monday after responding to reports of a student allegedly threatening staff and other students in CSC’s Kent Hall dormitory, police stated in a press release.

Mousseau is scheduled to appear in Dawes County Court at 2 p.m. Oct. 28.

After encountering Mousseau on the second floor of Kent Hall, and following an investigation, police arrested Mousseau,

accusing him of making “felony terroristic threats,” and of “misdemeanor third-degree assault, disturbing the peace, and MIP (minor in possession),” the release states.

The felony-related allegation stems from things Mousseau said to students and staff, not to police, Chadron Police Chief Tim Lordino said Wednesday.

A spokeswoman from the Dawes County Clerk of Courts office said Wednesday

afternoon that formal charges have not yet been filed by Dawes County Attorney Vance Haug.

“This incident was reported immediately to the Chadron Police Department and Chadron State College and its staff cooperated fully,” Lordino stated in the release.

Police also stated in the release that Mousseau appeared “intoxicated and at time was very uncooperative with officers.”

Senate president vetoes $5,500 allocation for Christian concert Jordyn Hulinsky Managing Editor

Senate President Katrina Hurley vetoed the $5,500 allocated to help fund a Christian concert sponsored by Chi Alpha and Revive.

The veto came Monday, a week after Senate approved the allocation at its Sept. 28 meeting.

Chi Alpha and Revive asked Senate to allocate $5,500 to help

bring four Christian bands to campus. The contract for the bands was signed in summer to book the banks, club representatives told Senate in a public forum Sept. 28.

“I believe that this legislation, if passed would show no consequence to clubs if they did not follow their budgets,” Hurley said Monday.

Student Association Constitution and Bylaws state, “Affiliated student organizations that have exhausted previously allocated funds may submit additional event-funding requests to the CAB.”

Hurley said Monday that she did not what to stop the concert, set for Oct. 14, so she suggested Senate approve a 25 percent penalty of the allocation. The result is that Chi Alpha and Revive will receive $4,125 for the concert. Senate approved Hurley’s proposal, 16 votes to 3 votes, with 1 senator abstaining.

Hurley suggested a committee be formed to set up a policy to prevent occurrences like this from happening. She said a policy should be in place for clubs who are working on contracts for events over the summer months.

Senate reduces concert allocation 25 percent on heels of veto Justine Stone News Editor

Student Senate President Katrina Hurley, vetoed Monday an allocation of $5,500 for a concert sponsored by Chi Alpha and Revive.

“I, Katrina Hurley, acting as Senate President am vetoing the act of legislation put forth by Senate Monday, Sept. 28, for $5,500 for Chi Alpha’s concert,” Hurley said at Senate’s weekly meeting. “I believe that this legislation, if passed would show no consequence to clubs if they did not follow their budgets. We need clubs that will accurately manage their funds. I propose that we do not completely defund the concert but, give a 25 percent penalty to the club; it would give a precedent that Senate does not condone mismanagement of funds.”

After Hurley’s veto, senators had the option to override it, let the allocation die, support the veto, or reduce a percentage of the original allocation.

Senator Syerra Wycoff-Bagshaw weighed in on the discussion.

“I don’t think that we should enact the veto because we want clubs to come to us, we want them to ask us for support, and we want Senate to get their name out there,” Wycoff-Bagshaw said. “It doesn’t make sense that when a club is like, ‘hey, we’re reaching out to Senate for support,’ that we’re going to slap them in the face. I understand that it was last minute, but, I mean, so was the Free Movie Night thing. We had to vote for it by Sunday so we had to do an online vote and I almost got in trouble because I was at

work when we were supposed to be voting. So to me it doesn’t make sense to go, ‘it’s nice that you asked for this money, but since you didn’t do this we’re going to slap you.’

“I mean why not just say, ‘Hey, put Senate’s name on the concert, too,’ and get our name out and promote ourselves, too.”

The senators approved Hurley’s veto, 16 votes to 3 votes, with 1 abstention.

Hurley said that she did not want to cancel the concert, but she believed there should be a significant consequence, which is why she proposed reducing the original allocation by 25 percent.

Student Association Constitution and Bylaws, state, “Affiliated student organizations that have exhausted previously allocated funds may submit additional event-funding request to the CAB.”

There is no policy for a standard sanction Senate may take against clubs that go over budget.

But Senate is creating a policy-review committee that may solicit suggestions for establishing such a standard. Any policy changes will go through that committee and be voted on by Senate.

In other business, Senate reported it had $118,842.61 in unallocated funds.

In CAB business, it reported that clubs have spent $31,980.40 this year. There are $121,784.50 in unallocated funds and $521.96 in CAB’s account.

Senate approved an allocation of no more than $3,000 for RLA to host leadership speaker, Marc Mero. He will have a closed presentation at 4 p.m. and a public presentation at 7 p.m., Sunday.

Project Strive implements recycling program on campus Justine Stone News Editor

Project Strive has implemented a recycling program on campus starting Oct. 1 and ending March 31, 2016. “Be Fantastic! Recycle Your Plastic!” is a recycling program through a program called Terracycle. Project Strive is encouraging students to donate if possible.

Boxes will be placed around campus to donate items in or students can contact anyone in Project Strive and they will bring the objects to the Project Strive Office.

The items are worth a different amount of points depending on what they are. Once Project Strive receives the items, they will send them in to Terracycle and will then receive the points. These points can be used to provide resources to help people in need, to help protect our environment, to help end poverty, and to provide education.

Items that will be accepted are split up into the following brigades: writing instruments, energy bar wrappers, personal care and beauty, snack bag, Tom’s of Maine Natural Care, Cereal Bag, Plastic Cup, and E-Waste.

The Writing Instrument Brigade shipment must weight over five pounds and two points will be given for each unit of waste. Items accepted in this group include pens and pen caps, mechanical pencils, markers and caps, permanent markers and caps, and highlighters and caps.

The Energy Bar Wrapper Brigade shipment must weight over five pounds and one point will be given for each unit of waste. Items accepted in this group include foil-lined energy bar or granola bar wrappers, foil-lined meal replacement bar wrappers, foil-lined protein bar wrappers, foil-lined diet bar wrappers, pouches from Clif Organic Energy Food, any wrappers from Clif Bars, Luna Bars, MOJO, Builders, Crunch, Shot Bloks, Shot Gels, and Shot Drinks.

The Personal Care and Beauty Brigade shipment must weight over 10 pounds and each unit of waste is worth two points. Items that will be accepted for this group include hair care packaging (plastic only), skin care packaging (no cans), and cosmetic packaging.

The Snack Bag Brigade points will depend on the size of the shipment. If the shipment is between 14 pounds and 40 pounds, one point will be given for each bag. If the shipment is over 40 pounds, two points will be given for each bag. Items

that will be accepted into this group include family-size snack bags, individual size snack bags, and multi-pack snack bags.

Items that will be accepted into Tom’s of Maine Natural Care Brigade include mouthwash bottles and caps, deodorant containers and caps, toothpaste tubes and caps, soap packaging, floss containers, and toothbrushes.

The Cereal Bag Brigade shipment must weight over 15 pounds. Two points will be given for each unit of waste. Items accepted into this group include plastic cereal bags and plastic cereal bag liners.

The Plastic Cup Brigade shipment must weight over five pounds and the only items accepted are #6 Rigid plastic cups.

There must be at least 20 individual items in the E-Waste Brigade. Items that will be accepted into this group include standard cell phones, smart phones, iPhones, digital cameras, camcorders, graphing calculators, select toner cartridges, inkjet cartridges, iPod devices, laptops, notebooks, netbooks, ereaders, tablets, and iPads. Each item in this section is worth a different amount of points varying from 25 points to 7,500 points.

Study abroad opportunity, May 2016 There will be a justice studies study abroad program to London, Paris, and the Hague, available to students of all majors, on campus and online students, in May 2016.

Retired wrestling champion will present to students

Marc Mero, retired wrestling champion, will be presenting at CSC at 7 p.m., Sunday in the ballroom. Mero will discuss his life during his wrestling career, his path to becoming a champion, the abuse of steroids, how he lost more than 30 friends and family members because of his negative lifestyle choices and behaviors, and how he dealt with this. He shares his story to encourage others to make positive life choices. Mero will also be doing a closed session for leaders on campus at 4 p.m., Sunday.

EDITORIAL–THE EAGLE’S VIEW

Student Senate needs guidance Last week, Senate allocated $5,500 to Chi Alpha and Revive in order to help the clubs fund a group of Christian artist to come to campus for a free concert. The allocation was made after Senate hosted a public forum to hear students’ opinions.

An email from Senate President Katrina Hurley, time-stamped at 10:12 a.m., Monday, Sept. 28, encouraged students to bring questions and concerns forward for Senate to consider before making its decision.

The forum was scheduled that same day for 3 p.m., just two hour’s before Senate’s regular meeting where the allocation was brought to a vote.

The reasoning behind the forum was appropriate and appreciated; however, the execution of the forum was questionable.

We understand that the senators are still students and are still learning their role as responsible stewards of the public trust. However, they are in need of guidance.

Students live busy lives, and scheduling a last minute forum is a surefire way to ensure that participation will not be optimal. At The Eagle, we had difficulty finding a reporter who had time available to cover the forum, which highlighted the fact that the student body needs adequate time and ample warning in order to make arrangements in order to attend forums like this.

According to Hurley, of the 15 senators at the time, only five voting senators were present at the forum, and one of the senators was representing one of the clubs asking for money.

Later during the scheduled meeting, five senators successfully petitioned onto Senate, and then voted on the issue.

Based on the hasty nature of this expenditure, and actions during past Senate sessions, a question has been passed around the newsroom: Where are the Senate advisers, and what are they doing to help the Senate leaders?

According to Merriam-Webster Dictionary, the definition of adviser is “to give (someone) a recommendation about what should be done.”

We do not expect Senate advisers to run Senate meetings or to control everything about Senate, but we do expect advisers to give advice and to help the students. We are starting to question if the Senate advisers are participating at all.

When we are in college, we like to think we have everything figured out; we like to think we don’t make mistakes anymore. However, this mentality is what leads us to failure. We fail to realize we need help, especially from people more experienced than us. That’s why NSCS Board Policy 3300, (the charter that gives Student Senate its mandate), requires clubs and student led organizations have advisers.

We want to know where the advisers were in this situation. Why didn’t they flag this decision? Did it occur to them to point out the fact that students and senators would be busy and wouldn’t be able to attend the forum? Did they think senators could use more time to speak to their constituents, rather than vote on the funding a few hours after the forum?

We humbly ask that Senate’s advisers start taking a more active role in the Senate’s decision making process and do what their title implies; give advice.

We would like to thank everyone who attended the kick off bonfire including the Chadron Fire Department, CSC Pep Band, CSC sports teams, and especially all of the students who made it a successful bonfire.

So far we’ve had spirit-filled events on campus but the Eagle pride doesn’t end there!

Friday, you can show your Eagle pride by wearing CSC colors.

For all of those who are still waiting on their letter from Hogwarts and your owl got lost, you can still participate in Quidditch Friday afternoon.

Saturday will be a huge day for Eagle pride packed with activities. The day starts off with the Eagle Run at 8 a.m. followed by the Homecoming parade down Main St. starting at 9:30 a.m.

Don’t forget to attend the football game at 1 p.m. to cheer on your Eagle football team! To wrap up our Homecoming week the formal dance will take place in the ballroom in the Student Center at 9 p.m.

Do not limit yourself to a college degree Janelle Kesterson Opinion Editor Although I am not a seasoned veteran at college yet (I will save that title for the super seniors and those who feel they have mastered it, because I have NOT), I have survived four semesters of college, and I am working on making it through this one.

If there is one thing that college has taught me it is that when you think you have hit rock bottom, it can get lower; and the lower you get, the darker it gets.

College is hard. Don’t let anybody tell you differently. It may not be the class work that is hard, but learning to manage your school work, social life, and finances on your own is something that takes practice, and it is not an easy thing to begin the journey into adulthood.

College is not only stressful, but it is

This is not true. Although everybody can benefit from the life skills and knowledge that you can acquire in college, it does not mean that college is necessary. College costs a lot of money, and that can be a setback. It can create a chasm of debt that is hard to crawl out of

Maybe you have found out that college is not the right place for you. If this is the case, I urge you to follow your convictions, and do what is best for you. I am not suggesting that you drop out to only end up a bum on the streets. Just know that there are career paths that do not require a college education.

If a college education is something that you determine you do not want to pursue any longer, come up with a plan and goals that will sustain you. You can use the real world to find mentors and learn practical skills. You can travel, volunteer, intern, and apprentice.

There is a wealth of opportunities that you can take advantage of. Maybe a college education is one of them, but don’t limit your education to having your name on a piece of paper hanging in a dusty frame.

SENATESPEAKS A word from the Student Senate President This week is Homecoming!

In Senate, the senators allocated funds to co-sponsor the Social Work Sexual Awareness Conference.

I vetoed the allocation for $5,500 for Chi Alpha’s concert.

I chose to do so because I would like to hold clubs accountable to their budgets they have proposed. Senate needs to make sure clubs will accurately manage their funds. If there is an issue during the summer, it needs to be brought to Senate’s attention within the first week of school.

I sought for a motion to allocate the funds asked, but with a 25 percent reduction for penalty. The motion passed for no more than $4,125.

This week Senate is hosting the spirit days and will be giving out prizes for first and second place. Come out and get your outfit judged and take a picture with our Polaroid cut outs. Have a great week!

Continuing tragedies highlight a need for change Sarah Townsend Lifestyles Editor In the wake of another tragedy, our nation’s president had nothing new to say.

During his response to the Umpqua Community College shooting on Thursday of last week, President Obama seemed to be venting to the public. He was sad, somber, and seemed distressed, as I feel most of us were as we heard about the events that unfolded at the tiny college, in the seemingly quaint community of Roseburg, Oregon.

He spoke about the potential all of these young victims had—he spoke about their families, and their heartache and grief. The families of these victims never get to see them smile again. They never get to see them graduate from college.

They never get to see them get married, get a great new job, or travel the world.

The victims never get to experience life as they should have. And this is all because a mentally unstable person with access to numerous firearms ripped their lives and futures from them.

I think that our President feels even

more helpless than he did before this tragedy, because he has tried and tried again to convince Congress to pass new firearm control laws, to no avail. He has had to give speech after speech following each different massacre, with no change coming from his efforts.

Obama said Thursday, “Our thoughts and prayers are not enough…” And I think he is right. What good do we actually do just by feeling bad for these people? If we really want to help the families of these victims and prevent further incidents, we have to take action. Our thoughts and prayers won’t stop the next mentally ill individual from walking into a supermarket with an

AK-47 and shooting 20 people because he or she is having a mental breakdown.

These shootings should not be routine.

There should not just be a feeling of “oh crap another school shooting, maybe we should do something.” We should actually try to figure out what sort of solution will actually help our country prevent these disasters.

“Somehow this has become routine; the reporting is routine. My response here at this podium ends up being routine, the conversation in the aftermath…we have become numb to this,” Obama said Thursday.

He should not be able to say that. As a country, we owe ourselves more than letting a mass shooting become routine. This “routine” only ends in more people senselessly dying.

We have to break the routine and the only way to do this is to fix the restrictions we have in place for buying firearms. We need to revise the laws that are obviously not working and solve this problem like many other first world countries have already.

It isn’t the responsible law-abiding gun owners that are the problem, it’s not the people who want no guns out there that are the problem; it’s the screening process be-

fore people acquire a firearm that is really the problem. So, next time you vote “no” on stricter gun laws, think about a person walking into your loved one’s place of work, or their school, or their favorite hangout and shooting randomly with the intent to kill as many people as possible.

Like I stated, it’s not the law-abiding gun owners that I have a problem with, it’s the people who can pass the process to get a firearm who should not be allowed to have them that I am scared of.

I am a supporter of guns and I am also a supporter of people who own guns. I just believe that we are not doing enough to keep guns out of the hands of those who intend to do harm with the deadly objects.

I do not want gun rights to be revoked in America, because I support the second amendment. However, in order to keep tragedy after tragedy from happening, something must be done.

In an effort to preserve the integrity of the second amendment, I believe that something as simple as a more rigorous screening process is a step in the right direction to stop the massacres from snowballing even further.

Talent should come before family name in sports Teri Robinson Photo Editor Growing up around sports and participating in them at different levels has exposed me to one common theme that angers me. It is a main reason I quit playing some sports. The theme is the Name Game.

If you have no idea what I’m talking about, the quick version of the Name Game is if you have a “famous” last name for your town or school, you are picked to play first over other athletes.

Before an uproar breaks out, I want to explain myself a bit more. I have played basketball, volleyball, softball, bowling, ran track, and I’ve been around baseball and football my entire life. Following all these sports from middle school through my college career I have noticed, especially in small towns or small communities, that coaches focus on the athletes whose families are well known within the community.

This may not seem like a big deal to some, but I have seen coaches start athletes with the “name,” over athletes who are actually athletically perfect for a particular position.

Unfortunately, in our society it is becoming more socially accepted, and sometimes even encouraged, to start someone based on his or her family name. I have watched as records disappeared, teams go from being the top ranked to no longer ranked, and qualified athletes become frustrated and quit be-

cause they never saw playing time.

I come from a small town where this situation is common, and it is the main reason I quit softball in high school.

When coaches choose to play the Name Game they are doing two things. One, they are feeding the athlete’s ego. This normally this occurs when the athlete isn’t qualified to start over another. Two, they ruin the hopes and intentions of the players who are being overlooked.

Coaches have a huge impact on their players, and if a player who is athletic and qualified to start sees no playing time, that athlete is more tempted to stop trying as hard or maybe even quit altogether.

Athletes work hard to prove their worth on the team.

When they are overlooked because, say, John Doe’s family members were starters, even though John Doe is not as athletic as one of his teammates, the overlooked players notice that.

This situation has been noticed and pointed out at middle school, high school, and even collegiate levels in athletics, and it’s disheartening. No athlete should be judged based on his or her family name. They should be placed appropriately on the roster based on his or her ability to perform.

I’ve watched talented athletes be overlooked and miss opportunities from scouts because the coach doesn’t want to upset a powerful family. When did our society become so concerned about pleasing those of higher power, and stop focusing on ability and talent? Why should certain individuals who work hard and prove themselves be overlooked simply because someone else’s family member stood out in the community?

Children do not necessarily share in their parents’ athleticism. I come from a relatively athletic family who stood out both in high school, and even at this college. However, I am not nearly as athletic as they are. My brother is very talented and athletic, and he was noticed for this. He now plays collegiality. Even though we come from the same family, we are separate individuals and obviously one is more athletic than the other.

Just because someone has an athletic family, or even a prominent family in the community, it should not give that athlete an advantage over his or her teammates. Coaches in every sport, at every level, need to learn to watch ability and performance instead of worry about what the athlete’s last name is.

Firefighters ignited the bonfire with gasoline to get the flames roaring. The cheerleaders and dance team grooved to the music as students gathered outside behind the resident halls to be introduced to the Fall 2015 sports teams Monday night.

The students cheered as the cross country, golf, rodeo, volleyball and football teams were each recognized at the annual pep rally. Each team had members say a few words to thank the student body for the support given to athletics at each sporting event.

Football members joined together to “bring juice,” something they do before every game as they beat on their chest and hum in sync.

The fire was raging as students crowded around the heat. From three feet back you could feel the temperature rise, any closer and you would get too toasty. Firefighters stayed near to ensure safety. Students grabbed hot dogs and hot chocolate as they waited for the flames to simmer down in order to roast marshmallows for a s’more.

A brave soul began the marshmallow roasting as they stood close to the fire possibly singeing the baby hairs off their skin. It didn’t take long for the marshmallows to become warm and gooey as the flames and hot coals made it golden perfection.

What is the key to proper nutrition? That is the first question people ask when they are looking to lose weight, lead a healthy lifestyle or just have overall better health.

Proper nutrition is defined as getting the calories we need for energy and nutrients we need for proper growth according to the National Food Service Management Institute.

As first year students, most college kids are coming from a stable, balanced place where their diet has basically been the same for 18 years of their lives.

Suddenly they are thrown into a situation where they have much more freedom, not only in their social lives, but with their diets as well.

That being said, the percentage of people who gain weight because of this change in their lives is pretty surprising. According to Health Magazine, roughly 70 percent of students gain weight by graduation.

This includes the infamous “Freshman 15.” The average weight gain for students, according to a study done at Auburn University in Alabama, is 12 pounds but up to 37 pounds.

To avoid the weight gain problems that stem from this sudden change in lifestyle, there are certain things that students can do help themselves be healthier.

One tip for college students is to avoid processed foods as much as possible. As easy as it is to go to McDonald’s and grab a Big Mac, the detrimental effects of eating too much fast food will stick with the consumer for more than most realize.

Students should try to limit the number of times they intake fast food each week and try to buy whole foods instead and make their own food.

Another tip is that students should try to avoid drinking their calories; not just in the form of alcoholic beverages either. For example, in only one Mountain Dew there is 350 calories according to myfitnesspal.com.

If a student drinks three of those a day, they are taking in half of their daily calories. Drinking sugary drinks and binging on alcoholic drinks is detrimental to students trying to keep a healthy weight. It is really all about moderation.

A third idea that students can use to their advantage when trying to be healthier is to understand that portion control is very important.

The average calorie intake per day for college students is 2,000-2,200 for women, and 2,600-2,800 for men.

Most health resources recommend that when dealing with portion sizes, students should try to only get one plate instead of twothree when in the cafeteria and they should remember that colored vegetables have the highest amount of micro-nutrients or vitamins and minerals and that filling up on these is much healthier than filling up with fatty foods.

Not only should students worry about their food intake, another part of staying healthy and avoiding unhealthy weight gain is to stay active.

Most students also change their lifestyles in this way and do not work out as much in college because their schedules change and they find it hard to find the time.

With dedication, however, students can overcome this as well.

There are millions of tips out there that can help students be healthier, but ultimately it comes down to the individual and their level of motivation to become healthy.

PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE

P

icture your typical elementary school spelling bee. Creaky bleachers, stale gymnasium air, proud parents filling the stands, and nervous students, trying their best to stay calm.

Now, erase all that from your mind and add in a deranged word pronouncer, a nostalgic ex-spelling bee champion, several dysfunctional families, a magic foot, and one crazy afternoon in Putnam County, and you have an idea of what is in store for if you choose to take in CSC’s most recent theatrical production, “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.” In a whirlwind of hilarity, song, dance and spelling, the cast takes the audience along the journey of six anxious and unique spelling bee participants. The play was originally presented as C-R-E-P-U-S-C-U-L-E and conceived by The Farm, which is an improvisational group in New York City. It later changed names and was revamped into the crazy, pandemonium-filled production that is gracing the stage at CSC. It begins with Rona Lisa Peretti, played

Each speller has his or her own individual story of how they arrived at the spelling bee and his or her own way of deciding how each word is spelled. Olive Ostrovsky, played

by Molly Thornton, senior of Riverton, Wyoming, has arrived at the bee alone and without an entrance fee because her mother is off searching for her soul in India, and father is taking his frustrations with his wife out on his daughter. Her spelling technique is to talk into her hand and say the letter to herself before she says them out loud to the judges.

Logainne Schwartzandgrubenierre, played by Asia Carr, junior of Chadron, is the adopted daughter of two men, one of which is putting pressure on his daughter where she feels she is obligated to win because she doesn’t want to let her dads down. Her special technique for spelling is writing her words out on her arm before speaking them because she needs to visualize the word before saying the letters.

Leaf Coneybear, played by Derek Phelps, senior of Sidney, is the strange, yet endearing child of parents who think he is not that smart. Phelps does a phenomenal job of capturing the essence of a misunderstood goofball who knows he is smart deep-down but has trouble portraying it to others. His technique for spelling is interesting, and comes across as he almost is put into a trance or being possessed, and it is not really him spelling the words.

‘Dropsy’ appeals to variety of gamers Eli Smith Reporter

When we think of modern games, we think of soldiers getting into epic gunfights, warriors holding mighty swords, and heroes that stand the test of time to thwart evil. We don’t think of scary clowns running around hugging random people. We then see a game like “Dropsy” and wonder, “Who does this appeal to?”

“Dropsy” is a game where you play the part of an overweight clown with an interesting past. Immediately starting with a tragic scene, the game starts with a lit cigar igniting a fire that burns the clown’s circus tent to the ground. The tragedy comes when it is found that his mother did not survive the event, creating a tragic opening for what ends up being a sad, heartwarming experience.

With that in mind, this is a “point-and-click” adventure game. People who don’t find this game style appealing will not find this game enjoyable. But for people who can get im-

mersed in a world where you run around solving puzzle, this game has a lot to offer for a $10 price tag. Dropsy the clown tries his best to improve the lives of those around him by doing them favors.

He replants a crying girls flower, feeds the hungry, helps a rock band reach its concert location, and does a number of different things to help the townsfolk. In order to do this, you have to solve puzzles that allow you to get the items that these individuals need. Some of those puzzles involve animal companions that you acquire as you advance through the game.

Before drawing childlike pictures of the individuals on the back wall, Dropsy is rewarded by giving hugs after solving the puzzles. This wall serves as your achievement list in the game, allowing you to keep track of everything you have done as you progress.

You can even hug random objects along the way to get the rewards for those, giving the literal definition of a “tree hugger” in one instance. With that in mind, the puzzle solving in this game is pretty simplistic. It isn’t overly satisfying to get

another drawing on the wall when you can reach that award by simply doing stuff in the game.

Going back to the story, Dropsy sets the scene in another way through the dreams that you experience in the game. I say “experience” because the dreams put you in a strange, distorted world where you walk along a preset path until a face in the floor eventually eats you.

The dreams make you wonder what Dropsy is truly going on as he faces these mental battles throughout the game.

They are a strange combination of interesting and weird and add to the strangeness of the game in a charming way.

“Dropsy” appeals to those who love the “point-and-click” style adventure games that have died out after games like “Monkey Island.” People who play “Dropsy” will get that feeling of nostalgia to some affect, but not to a great deal. It lacks the incredible world-building that comes with a game like “Monkey Island,” but it still manages to be a charming experience that is well worth the price. If you are looking for something a little weird and charming, “Dropsy” might be the game.

The Kent Hall Kegger is a reminder that you can have fun without alcohol. This statement comes from senior Residential Adviser Katrina Hurley who stood at the door in front of the Gold Room during the party heavy atmosphere last Saturday night. The Kegger went on from 9 - 11 p.m. and hosted a water pong tournament, glow sticks made into necklaces and sunglasses, a DJ, and a bartender mixing margaritas with no alcohol. Prizes were also given to the winners of the water pong tournament and those who participated in the festivities. Water pong was set up so teams of two would have an opportunity to win 50 dollars for each member in first place, 25 in second place, and 10 in third.

Residential Hall Director Jazz Bozner organized the event and wanted to emphasize a real atmo-

sphere to reflect what people should come to expect at a party where alcohol is involved. People were given plastic cups and had them marked (or “roofied”) if they were left unattended. This was to remind people that it is unsafe to leave your drinks sitting around at parties, as they could end up “roofied” by the end of the night.

According to the Drug Free Foundation (http://www.drugfreeworld. org/), Rophynall (or a “roofie”) is a pill that causes people to experience a loss of muscle control, confusion, and memory loss. Rophynall is often used as a “date-rape” drug for these reasons.

The party stood as a way to remind people of the dangers of alcohol abuse and being careful at parties. To further emphasize this, a bodybag was set on a sofa just outside of the door to remind people of the dangers of alcohol abuse and leaving your drink unattended.

It was a cold and foggy morning as members from the community, students, faculty, and loved ones affected by suicide joined together Saturday. They participated in the “Out of Darkness” walk beginning in Wilson Park to help raise funds for vital research and gain awareness about suicide prevention.

Among the participants were suicide survivors, supportive family members, and friends. Many students were interested in bringing awareness to our community.

This event brought out Amy Lewansowski and her family from Callaway, as she remembered her nephew, a suicide victim. “It’s great and we’re excited to be here,” Lewansowski said.

Western Community Health Resources organized this walk to bring people affected by suicide

together and to provide support to one another.

This walk touched close to home with workers of WCHR as some have been affected by suicide on a personal level. Two Chadron residents and workers of WCHR held their heads high as they walked in remembrance of family members lost to suicide as well as being suicide survivors themselves.

“Out of Darkness” walks are nationwide, reaching out not only to communities, but college campuses everywhere. Suicide takes many lives every day and the numbers keep increasing. Every donation makes a difference in furthering research and raising awareness to hundreds of thousands of people across the country.

The money raised from these walks supports continued research surrounding depression and other mental disorders. Saturday’s walkers took each step in honor of those lost to suicide in hope to save lives.

Federal prison camp educator presents about inmates’ release Ahn Le Reporter

Kyle Roberson, supervisor of education for a federal prison camp in Yankton, South Dakota, presents over “Planned Happenstance” and careers last Thursday.

Thursday, CSC sponsored guest speaker Kyle Roberson hosted a seminar at the Student Center.

Roberson shared his planned happenstance story and his career path. His story also opened to many career opportunities that would impact not only your but also others’ futures.

The seminar had three different sessions and each lasted for an hour and a half. About 40 people stayed until the end of the first seminar.

Roberson’s seminar, title “Coming Soon to a Neighborhood Near You” focused on education in prison and what program he had in prison in order to improve inmates. He explained the name of the seminar was because the U.S. released approximately 45,000 inmates a year; therefore, there were people who just got out of prisons in surrounding areas.

He mentioned the Road to Reentry for the inmates. They had to improve nine skills: character, academic, leisure time, cognitive, daily living, career, wellness, mental health, and interpersonal communication. His prison also had a Drug Program which provided drug education to inmates. There were

teachers for inmates to earn their high school diplomas by taking the GED course.

He said the most important thing to do was to keep the inmates busy; therefore, more programs are created. Inmates who join the Federal Prison Industries Program can make things out of wood, which is provided by people who lived nearby. Inmates could also earn associated degrees by entering College Education Programs. Roberson said his favorite program was the Horticulture Program in which inmates did the gardening both in and out of prison.

He showed a few pictures of their work, and photos of them working with others.

His programs also create a lot of jobs opportunities for inmates when they’re released to society.

“I have been doing this for the last two years to change people’s perspective about prison,” Roberson said after the seminar. “The seminar went well and students engaged at the discussion.”

“What I took away from the seminar is how important it is to build life skills in prisons so that inmates who are close to release can go out to the society and be productive to contribute to society,” Daniel Espinosa, sophomore of Rapid City, South Dakota, said.

Homecoming laser tag proves huge hit for students Anastasia Zbarazhskaya Reporter

Andy Martin, senior of Mobile, Alabama, organized the Laser Tag game “Going on a Bear Hunt” from 6-11 p.m., Tuesday in the NPAC Arena.

“I thought that it could be very good to go with a theme to Homecoming ‘Going on a Bear Hunt,’” Martin said. He said that he wanted to give something for campus. Also, he noticed that CSC had never had events like this before.

Entering the NPAC, students could see a fenced area with 15 bunkers and bear figures around the perimeter.

The rules of the game are simple. Martin said that 16 players can play a 10-minute

game. Each player has five lives. The guns have lasers, which control the amount of shots, so when the player is shot for the fifth time, it means that the game is over for this player.

All students who came to the NPAC Tuesday night were enjoying their evening.

Zach West, senior of Ordway, Colorado, said he would love to play again. After the game all students were excited. The players said that it was terrific, but they said they wanted to have more hiding places. Despite the lack of obstacles the event was well organized, and many visitors didn’t want to leave, waiting in line for another battle.

Around 240 students came to the Laser Tag game “Going on a Bear Hunt.” The questionnaire showed students like the event and they want to repeat it in the future.

The men’s team took 10th and the women’s team finished eighth Saturday, at the Chile Pepper Cross Country Festival hosted by the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville. The invite included D-I, D-II, and NAIA schools.

The Chile Pepper Festival was co-founded by CSC President Randy Rhine in 1988.

“As a team we certainly did better than the past years,” Phill Duncan, sophomore of Chadron, said. “Both the boys’ and the girls’ teams made top 10 in our divisions, and we beat some D-I teams.”

The men’s 8K started at approximately 9:45 a.m. Four hundred sixty-six athletes combined to run the race. Colorado School of Mines blew away the competition finishing with 44 points. Pittsburg State University earned second place with 125 points.

Junior Dylan Stansbury, of Crawford, led the CSC men’s 332-point finish in a time of 24:55.99, in 19th place. Evans Koech, senior of Nairobi, Kenya, placed 30th in 25:21.75. Sophomore Levi Avila, of Mitchell, finished in 26:19.27, putting him in 77th. Duncan, placed 92nd in 26:43.61, followed by sophomore Eric Yager of Hot Springs, South Dakota, in 114th with a time of 27:07.80.

Kyle Dietsch, junior of Sheridan, Wyoming, placed 120th in a time of 27:12.06, and Taylor Dick, freshman of Douglas, Wyoming, complete the race in 134th with his time of 27:28.67.

Furrier racked up 17 tackles, 11 assisted, and six solo. Furrier currently leads the team in tackles with 54, 25 of which are solo tackles. He has an assisted sack for a loss of three yards. Furrier is ranked second in the RMAC for most tackles. He also has the third most forced fumbles.

Webb, a true freshman, set up 61 assists in the game against Colorado State University-Pueblo. She had 35 in the match against Western State. She is leading the Eagles in assists with 449, and serve aces with 10 in 50 sets. Webb MADISON WEBB also has 119 digs on the season.

Going on a bear hunt This weekend we will welcome the Adams State Grizzlies to our campus. Wait a second, bears in Nebraska? That’s right, the Grizzlies will be making a return that dates back to their historical range. That is in terms of the animal species. The unique theme for Homecoming is “Going on a Bear Hunt.” This is not the song your elementary teacher made you sing. However, if you want to relive your childhood the song can be found in a few seconds on the internet. There’s even a children’s book based on it.

We could do some exploring and find this is not the first time the phrase “going on a bear hunt” has been used. Some of the first written encounters were recorded in Lewis and Clark’s expedition. A “most tremendous looking animal, and extremely hard to kill,” wrote Lewis in his journal on May 5, 1805. A “very large and a terrible looking animal,” Clark described. It was the largest bear they’d ever seen, weighing an estimated 600 pounds. Many Native American tribes told them they would only attack these bears if there were six to 10 people in their hunting party, still resulting in the possible death of members. Lewis wrote in his journal that the bears were no match for a skilled rifleman. He would soon change his mind after a grizzly unexpectedly came running towards him after he shot a buffalo. He was able to escape the mighty grizzly, but made sure that nobody went out alone after that.

You won’t find grizzly bears roaming the plains of Nebraska anymore. According to published studies, they were extirpated from most western states throughout the 20th century. Distribution maps of the contiguous United States show that they primarily inhabit Montana, with small centralized populations in Wyoming and Idaho. Their primary range is throughout Alaska and western Canada.

As Homecoming draws to a close let’s rally the Eagles to finish the bear hunt. Good luck to our football team against the Adams State Grizzlies. Go to the game, support the team, and make a solid effort to tame the Grizzlies.

Cowboys continue success in Lamar, Colo.

Shae Brennan Reporter Success continued for the Chadron State College rodeo team, with the help of Colby Anders, junior of Bayard, earned All-Around Cowboy at Lamar Community College last weekend. Overall, the men finished third and the women placed fifth.

Thanks to some key performances, the CSC men’s team is still ranked first in the region. Anders placed first in steer wrestling with a time of 9.5 seconds and second in tie down roping with a time of

10.6. Other CSC cowboys, Samuel Boldon, junior of Oglala, South Dakota, placed first in tie down roping with a time of 10.9 and Clayton Van Aken, graduate student of Laramie, Wyoming, shared first place in team roping with a time of 6.2, to help the team. Two more CSC cowboys earned second in their events, Nate McFadden, senior of Dunning, in bareback riding, and Chasen Cole, sophomore of Hermosa, South Dakota, in bull riding.

Shelby Winchell, graduate student of Scottsbluff, has shown her value to the team by accumulating 550 points during the past four rode-

os this fall. Last weekend, she placed second in goat tying with a time of 8.2. Another CSC cowgirl Kelsy Knust, junior of Verdigre, placed sixth in team roping.

Coach Dustin Luper is looking forward to seeing his team go into the last rodeo of the fall with some momentum. The rodeo will be held Friday through Sunday at Laramie County Community College.

The rodeo season will continue in the Spring. If the team keeps up the good work, we should expect to see some of our own cowboys or cowgirls compete in the College National Finals Rodeo in June.

CROSS COUNTRY Around 10:20 a.m. the women’s race shot off. Four hundred thirty-six women took off the starting line, and University of Arkansas’ Dominque Scott, redshirt senior of Capetown, South Africa, finished first, with a time of 16:07.18. The second place finisher, also of the University of Arkansas, Devin Clark, freshman of Spring Branch, Texas, crossed the line in 16:28.56.

The University of Montevallo, Alabama, won the women’s division, with 92 points. Second place went to Colorado School of Mines, with 119 points.

The CSC women’s team finished eighth out of 33 small school teams, scoring 230 points. Senior Rebecca Volf, of Wood River, led the team with her 18:07.35 finish in 19th place. Junior Nicky Banzhaf, of Chadron, was right on Volf’s heels in 20th with a six-hundredths of a second time difference in 18:07.41.

Alyse Henry, freshman of Rock Springs, Wyoming, was 47th in 18:36.55.

The Eagles will run at the RMAC Championships Oct. 24 at Adams State in Alamosa, Colorado.

According to the RMAC website, six men’s teams in the RMAC are ranked in the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Coaches Poll. Colorado School of Mines is currently ranked third in the nation with 187 points; Adams State University is fourth with 177; with 134 points, Western State Colorado University is in 10th place; New Mexico Highlands University holds the 11th spot; Black Hills State University earned the 20th spot with 51 points.

The Adams State women’s team is ranked second in the nation with 194 points; Western is sixth with 152, Colorado Mines is 18th and UCCA is 22nd with 59 points and 26, respectively.

Golf team earns 4th at Augustana Evan Clark Advertising Account Executive The Chadron State golf team began the tournament in the Augustana Fall Invitational at Prairie Green Golf Course in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, with a shaky start due to unfavorable weather conditions. The team improved by 28 strokes Sunday, to tie the University of Sioux Falls for fourth place out of eight teams.

Host Augustana College, Sioux Falls, South Dakota, won the two-day invitational. The team shot identical rounds of 299. The scores stood as the lowest team scores of the weekend, cinching the win for the Vikings.

CSC had two golfers in the top 20 with Emma Harris, senior of Wahoo, with 85-82167 to tie for 17th at the tournament and Sam Rahmig, freshman of Gering, with 88-

81-167 to tie for 20th.

“I felt like I played pretty well, but could’ve done better at the same time,” Harris said. “My short game got me into trouble at times, especially from the sand.

Our team didn’t do the best the first day, me included, but we came back the second day knowing that we all had to make up strokes, and we did that pretty successfully. I think the course and the weather had an effect on our game. Day one was super windy and probably the coldest weather we’ve ever played in, which makes it tough to shoot low. Day two was a little warmer and I think we were more comfortable with the course which allowed us to get some low scores.”

Schuler Wetzel, senior of Hot Springs, South Dakota, and Kelli Haynes, sophomore of Whitney, also had huge drops in strokes on the second day of the tournament. Wetzel went 90 the first day and 81 in the sec-

ond round, equaling a 171 tournament total.

Haynes went 91 and 82 to finish with 173. Mikayla Gallagher, sophomore of Hot Springs, South Dakota, shared the same sentiments as Harris concerning the dramatic improvement the team saw from the first to the second round.

“The first day was super cold and windy and we didn’t play the best,” Gallagher said.

‘But the next day the conditions were still a bit chilly but warmed up throughout the day and we all improved so that was a plus. I don’t think we’ve ever all improved the second day at a tournament. Also, we got pretty close to our school record for 18 hole team score so that was pretty neat.”

The Eagles will conclude their fall season Monday-Tuesday at the RMAC tournament #2, at the University of New Mexico Championship Golf Course in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

BRIEFS Women’s Rugby team to play 2 games Saturday The CSC women’s rugby team will play at 10 a.m., Saturday. For now only the women’s team will play; however, the men’s team might have a scrimmage.

The women’s team will play two separate matches against the University of South Dakota, a 7’s match and a 15’s match (one match will have seven players per team, the other will have 15).

By land and air, Eagles bombard Mountaineers, 31-24 Preston Goehring Sports Editor The CSC Eagle football team earned its second victory of the season, beating Western State Colorado University, Gunnison, 31-24. The Eagles improved to 2-3 on the season, 1-2 in RMAC play. Western State is now 0-5 overall, 0-3 RMAC. Offensively, the Eagles racked up over 500 yards, 241 of which were on the ground. Derek Jackson, sophomore of Pueblo West, Colorado, led the attack with 130 yards off 24 attempts. Junior Cody Paul, of Seal Beach, California, was not far behind with 101 yards off 13 attempts.

Matt Vinson, sophomore of Box Elder, South Dakota, who made his first start, completed 25 passes out of 39 for a total of 266 yards. Redshirt freshman, TD Stein, of Chadron, did not play against Western due to an injured left hand. Vinson also threw a five-yard touchdown to Danny O’Boyle, senior of Gering, early in the opening quarter.

“It’s always nice when you can get a win on the road,” Vinson said. “Especially since Western has a really good team. A win like that is definitely a confidence boost. The team really took the pressure off of me since it was my first start. The O-line did a great job all game. And our running backs and receivers made a ton of plays.”

Vinson wasn’t the only player to throw a touchdown pass. Justyn Curtis, sophomore of Richmond, Indiana, tossed a five yard score in the third quarter to Zac Bargen, senior of Chadron.

Vinson said that it makes a huge difference having a lot of playmakers on the field.

“Our running backs have the ability to score every time they touch the ball,” he said. “The offensive line does such a great job of opening running lanes for them. And the receivers have done a really good job this year helping out TD and I. It seems like they catch every ball thrown their way.

Knowing that you’re out there with all those playmakers really takes away a lot of the pressure.”

Defensively, the Eagles kept the Mountaineers under control thanks to senior linebacker Dylan Furrier, of Tucson, Arizona, who earned 17 tackles. The twin safeties, Ryan and Brian Wood, juniors of Stockton, California, racked up 19 tackles between the two of them.

The Eagles next game is against the Grizzlies of Adams State, for the 2015 Homecoming game. The Grizzlies are ranked No. 7 in the RMAC with a 1-4 record overall.

“When Saturday rolls around, we will be ready for them,” Vinson said.

I’m definitely excited to be starting at home for the first time. There is always a great environment at home and we have great fans.”

Adams State also has the fourth best passing offense in the conference, averaging over 260 yards per game. With a solid defense, the Grizzlies are going to be tough opponent.

“They have a good defense and we expect it to be a really tough game,” Vinson said. “I think it’s going to come down to how well we can execute.

We did some good things last week and are looking to improve off of those things this week.”

Kickoff is set for 1 p.m., Saturday.

CSC rise above CSU-Pueblo, fall to Mountaineer attack Jay Feltson Reporter

Last weekend the Eagles’ volleyball team split two tough home games against the Colorado State University-Pueblo ThunderWolves and the Western State Colorado University Mountaineers.

In the first game against the ThunderWolves, the Eagles came out aggressively on offense and played smart defensively. Offensively, the Eagles were led by Gabby Varela, sophomore of Dorado, Puerto Rico, who collected 22 kills in the four-set match. The Eagles also had four aces, two of which came from Sina Mauga, senior of Ewa Beach, Hawaii, who has been a key contributor for the Eagles this season. Madison Webb, freshman of Loveland, Colorado, helped the Eagles out by having a total of 61 assists.

The Eagles’ defense played a big part in winning the match, as a team they collected a total of 80 digs. Chloe Guillen, sophomore of San Antonio set the tone on defense with 19 digs. Kenzie Chrisman, freshman of Sterling, Colorado, and Mauga tied for the most blocks of the evening with seven each. The Eagles took off with the match from the beginning and never looked back, eventually winning the match 3-1. Guillen was pleased with the team’s effort.

“It was honestly one of the best and most complete games that we’ve played as a team this season,” Guillen said.

On Saturday, trying to keep the momentum from the previous win, the Eagles faced off against the Mountaineers of Western State.

Mauga showed her defensive abilities, totaling five blocks, making it hard for the Mountaineers to hit anything her way in the four-set match. Jamie McLain, senior of Chadron, came in and gave hard effort and collected a total of 10 digs. While the Eagles fought hard and kept every set close, holding leads in all of them, they were eventually outmatched by the Mountaineers

losing 3-1, in close matches.

“We didn’t come out as strong as we were capable of doing against Western which eventually led to the loss,” Guillen said.

“We are going to learn from both games and practice what we need, to get better at in order to beat these next upcoming teams”.

This weekend, the Eagles will be on the road playing against Black Hills State University in Spearfish, South Dakota, Friday and then traveling to Rapid City, South Dakota, to play South Dakota School of Mines & Technology, Saturday. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m., Friday, and 3 p.m., Saturday.
