NSCS Board convenes at CSC for fall meeting Jordyn Hulinsky Managing Editor

Chadron State College is hosting the Nebraska State College System Board of Trustees this week for their fall meeting.

The trustees arrived for the first meetings yesterday. Meeting in the Student Center, the Council of Business Officers and the Council of Academic Officers, who are the respective vice presidents from all the colleges and their counterparts from the System Office, met yesterday. Korinne Tande, vice chancellor for student affairs, marketing, enrollment, and public information, stated in an email Tuesday that these officers usually meet to review

This week Senate did not meet due to the Labor Day weekend. Instead, Senate took an online vote

board materials and discuss future board meetings.

In an executive session today, the trustees are expected to discuss personnel, litigation, and liability issues. Tande stated in an email Wednesday morning, the information discussed at executive sessions is confidential, but the discussion is limited to personnel, litigation, and liability issues.

Dan Worth and the Bahr Vermeer Haecker Architects will give a presentation of the CSC Athletic Facility Program Statement at 1 p.m., today in the Student Center Lakota Room.

The Academic & Personnel Committee; Fiscal, Facilities & Audit Committee; and Student Affairs,

Marketing & Enrollment Committees will have their meetings in various locations in the Student Center at 2 p.m.

The trustees will then be given tours of various buildings on campus. A dinner and reception, where James Wada, associate professor of justice studies, who was named the 2015 NSCS Teaching Excellence Award winner, will be honored.

Tomorrow, the fall business meeting will be at 8 a.m., in the Sandoz Center.

Members are scheduled to discuss the accepting and approving of the Program Statement for the Football Stadium and Track Projects at Chadron State College, according to the agenda for the meeting.

and Eagle Ridge. Those positions can be filled through Katrina Hurley, Senate president.

VP presents about quality education Vice President of Academic Affairs Charles Snare will be giving presentations in the Lakota Room in the Student Center throughout September and October. Three main topics will be discussed in the presentations: The Master Academic Plan (MAP) Progress, the HLC Reaffirmation Process, and the State of Higher Education.

The MAP presentations are on Monday, Sept. 14 and Thursday, Sept. 24. The HCL Reaffirmation presentations are on

Monday, Sept. 21, and Thursday, Oct. 1. The State of Higher Education presentations are on Monday, Oct. 5. and Thursday, Oct. 8. Each presentation is from 3:15 – 4:15 p.m. The presentations will be about CSC’s reaffirmation process through the Higher Learning Commission. CSC’s MAP was established in fall of 2013 and has six main priorities that will help to create a quality and costeffective learning experience at Chadron State College.

LARP Society club voted into CAB Justine Stone News Editor

The total amount allocated to the clubs in CAB as of now is $150,764.90. The clubs have spent $9,123.01 so far this year.

CAB approved three nominees—Stephanie Alfred, Tori Stepp, and Trista Schell—to take positions on the Activity Fee Board. AFB will be looking for at-large members to join the board in a few weeks. Schell requested to be voted in as an atlarge member of CAB and the representatives approved.

The LARP Society club was voted into CAB. The voting of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation into CAB was tabled until they could give a brief explanation of what their club would do

on campus at a future meeting.

The club adviser meeting is in the Ballroom at 11 a.m., Sept. 17.

If an adviser is unable to attend, he or she will need to meet with CAB to get the information that will be discussed at the meeting.

Updated club packets are due Sept. 22. If they are not returned by this date, the club’s account will be frozen.

CAB is looking to work with a club to host an event on Oct. 24.

Tentative dates for Free Movie Night are Sept. 27 and Nov. 15. The tentative date for Free Bowling Night is Dec. 5. These dates are not set in stone but will be known for sure next week.

Flag football registration ends today and volleyball registration ends tomorrow.

Homecoming week events

have been updated. A location is being found for the coronation and bed sheet winners on Tuesday, Oct. 6. The lighting of C-Hill will also be on Tuesday. Laser Tag will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 7.

Chris Green will be at Walmart from 10 – 11 a.m., every Thursday, to pay for supplies for club activities. If this time does not work for the club members, they need to talk to Green and set up another time to meet.

The Nebraska State College System Board is coming to CSC today and tomorrow for meetings.

There will be an Eagle Pride Night for the volleyball game on Sept. 18. There is a possibility that the first 50 students to attend and stay at the game will receive an iTunes gift card.

Turmoil in Baltimore continues

A

fter days of violent rioting in a city formerly known as Charm City, Baltimore State Attorney Marilyn Mosby announced charges against six officers in the death of 25-year-old Freddie Gray. She declared to the city and to the rioters that “I heard your call for ‘no justice, no peace.’”

The announcement of this statement raises questions as to whether the right of the six officers to a due process of law was compromised.

While the long-term implications of Mosby’s announcement are still unclear as the trail progresses, the short-term benefits were evident and constructive. Upon Mosby’s announcement to stop nothing short of justice, the violent rioting and protests turned into jubilant celebration.

The repercussions of Mosby’s words have invited motions on behalf of the defendants for not only a change of venue, but also for the appointment of an independent prosecutor.

If the case were to stay in Baltimore, the members of the jury would have strong motivations not to acquit the officers in fear that their city would go up in flames once again. This would be letting the demonstrators decided something that should be left in the hands of the law.

America has a history of justice by mob rule, primarily in the south, where the threats of lynching and violent demonstrations influenced the outcomes of trials. In the past, it has been largely African Americans that were the victims of mob injustice; however, it is no less serious when the demonstrators are chiefly African American. The denial of due process is still injustice when the demonstrators are demanding equal treatment from the police, as is the case in Baltimore.

Only Mosby knows for what motivated her to charge six officers with crimes ranging from second-degree murder to manslaughter to assault.

It is not yet clear what evidence she has to justify these serious charges, considering there is no actual video footage or eyewitness accounts of the death of Freddie Gray. However, the crowd’s influence on Mosby flows from her ill-chosen words, and her call for justice in lieu of the cries from the demonstrators is ridden with injustice for the officers that still have to face the justice system.

Davis leaves jail, now she needs to leave office Janelle Kesterson Opinion Editor A defiant Rowan County, Kentucky Clerk, Kim Davis, was jailed for contempt last Thursday after she repeatedly refused to issue marriage licenses to gay couples, even after she was ordered to do so by a federal judge.

This came in the wake of the recent Supreme Court ruling that state governments can no longer keep same-sex couples from marrying and must recognize their unions.

Davis’ case emphasizes the tension between a person’s right to express their religious freedom and the protections that gay couples now have against discrimination.

Davis has made it clear that she will continue to violate the judge’s order and that imposing fines on her will not be sufficient to force her to comply. The court is taking the case against Davis seriously because by letting it slide, it would be setting a dangerous precedent that would allow other elected officials to think they can choose to honor their religious beliefs over their oath of office.

While jailed, Davis turned down an offer by U.S. District Judge David Bunning of the Eastern District of Kentucky to

avoid being held in contempt on the condition that she agree to allow her deputies to grant licenses to same-sex couples.

She was released after five of her six deputies, the single holdout being her son, began issuing licenses to same-sex couples.

Davis was warned by Bunning not to interfere with the duties of her deputy clerks.

Kentucky law states Davis cannot be fired because she is an elected official. To be removed she must be impeached by the state legislature or convicted of a crime.

It is important to note that Davis was not put in jail for possessing or even expressing her religious beliefs. She was jailed because she broke the law, imposed her beliefs on others while performing her official public duties, and continued to do both when she was ordered by the court to cease.

tion grants religious freedom to U.S. citizens, including Davis. It also gives citizens the right to exercise freedom of speech.

Consequently, Davis has every right to disagree with same-sex marriage, and she has the right to do so publicly. But, she does not have the right to impose her beliefs on others while performing the duties of her publicly held office.

When she did that, she failed to separate church and state.

She is a government official, and therefore, must keep her religion out of her job. The uproar that has followed her jailing and release is out of proportion.

If Davis were an atheist who was refusing to issue marriage licenses to Christian couples because the union of Christians was against her lack of religion, then Christians would react the same way the courts and the homosexual community supporters are now reacting to Davis.

Kim Davis does not have the authority to decide who has the right to be married and who does not. In fact, if carrying out the duties of office is so morally conflicting for Davis, she should step down from office, and leave the position to someone who can fulfill the obligations they were elected to perform.

Make your impact positive You have a chance to change the world, and that starts now.

Jordyn Hulinsky Managing Editor This summer, I spent my time teaching a church camp called Totus Tuus. At Totus Tuus, four college students travel around as a team teaching at different churches. We would spend one week at each church before moving on to a new church. We did this for eight weeks.

My team was called “Team Scooby” and our team was asked at training to come up with a bible verse or a motto to help us guide the summer. A verse I came in contact with about a year ago that we decided was perfect for this summer was 1 Timothy 4:12 which reads, “Let no one have contempt for your youth, but set an example for those who believe in speech, conduct, love, faith, and purity.”

My interpretation says, even though I am young, there’s no reason I can’t do great things. It says even though I am only a young kid, I can still do amazing things in this world.

The first week of classes, one of my professors asked us a few questions to journal about. One of the questions was, “Do you believe you can make a difference in the world?”

This is a big question to ask of college students at a school clear out in the middle of nowhere Nebraska that almost no one has heard of.

But, I believe we can. I believe each and every one of us at this school can change

the world either for the better or for the worse, and it’s up to us to decide which.

Pope Benedict once said, “The world offers you comfort, but you were not made for comfort. You were made for greatness.”

This summer I traveled around the state teaching kids in grades first through 12th about God and how to be the best versions of themselves. I watched the kids change and grow as the weeks went on, and I saw differences in every kid from the beginning of the week to the end of the week. I watched as every week four college-age-students changed the world, one church at a time.

If you find something you are passionate about, something you care about, something you love, and you follow that passion and spread that passion to other people, you will make a difference in the world. Now, you just need to make sure your passion is something beneficial.

At our age, we have the opportunity to be role models to all kinds of people.

Those younger than us, especially those in high school, admire college students. College is a magical place that

high schoolers haven’t had the opportunity to experience yet, and it intrigues them that we come from this magical place. We have power. We can take that power and use it for the good and be great role models, or we can abuse that power and harm those looking up to us.

But more than just high schoolers look at us for role models. Even those older than us are looking at our generation and watching what we do. They are judging us, and they want to see what we do because they also know we have power. They know we are some day going to be in charge of this country, and they don’t think we can do it.

Many of those older than us are expecting us to mess up, to fail, to use our power for bad, but when we use the power we have for good, they are amazed, and they change their views.

We have the power to influence the way people older than us act and think, simply by the way we act.

At our age, we are young, but that shouldn’t stop us from wanting to change the world. Changing the world doesn’t have to be something drastic.

Changing the world for the better could be as simple as smiling more, scowling less; helping more, harming less; or singing more, and whining less. Even as young people, let’s be an example of the good in the world for all those around us in the things we say, in the ways we act, and in the love we show to others.

Change the world.

Alternative diet options For some it is carnivorous, for some it is vegetarian, the choices are purely personal.

What is a vegan diet? Basically, it is a more restricted version of vegetarianism. In addition to the removal of meat from your diet, you would also remove all food items produced using animal products. Milk, cheese, eggs—these are all out. Veganism is frequently touted as one of the healthiest forms of eating. But can such a severe elimination of a food group ever truly be healthy?

This is not to advocate eating steak and eggs for breakfast every morning. Instead, I would contest that while the over consumption of animal products is dangerous for our health, so too is their complete eradication from our diets.

How many of us have access to a nutritional consultant who can make sure that our diet isn’t leaving us with nutrient deficiencies?

That would rarely be affordable, and veganism comes with a high risk for these nutrient deficiencies. Calcium, zinc, iron, vitamin B12 and Omega-3 fatty acids are just a few of the important nutrients that run the risk of being negatively affected by a vegan diet.

This becomes an even higher risk for those vegans who become dependent on prepackaged, highly processed foods. Did you know that Oreos are marketed as a vegan food? The word “vegan” is not synonymous with the word “healthy.”

One extremely processed food that is common place in a vegan diet is soy. In his article The Health Dangers of Soy, published by the Huffington Post, Joseph Mercola states that, “Thousands of studies link soy to malnutrition, digestive distress, immune system breakdown, thyroid dysfunction, cognitive decline, reproductive disorders and infertility—even cancer and heart disease.” In its raw form soy is extremely toxic to humans. In addition to this natural toxicity, soy is heavily treated with pesticides which then make their way into soy food products, like soy milk. Obviously, this is not something you want to include in your diet.

One argument in favor of veganism that we must consider is that pertaining to the current treatment of animals raised in factory farms. The cruelty of these institutions cannot be ignored. When numerous animals are raised on top of one another it is unsafe, unsanitary and unkind. In addition, these animals are given hormones and antibiotics to increase the production

I love steak. It’s a delicious, protein-packed food that’s raised right here in Nebraska. I’m also a vegetarian. I haven’t eaten meat in three years because even though bacon is probably the tastiest thing on earth, being an omnivore comes with substantial unwanted baggage.

The first, and most expected, pro-veg argument I have is pretty subjective. Personally, I don’t want to eat the living flesh of another creature. You might. If animal death were the only issue that meat-eating raised, I’d have no argument. Animals will die either way, so we might as well use them for energy. That’s why I’m a vegetarian that supports hunting. As long as the animal lives well and dies humanely, I don’t care if you eat it. Unfortunately, this isn’t the only problem on the table.

Eating meat causes many repercussions, on people and the environment, which make it an unsavory habit. Raising, packaging, and distributing meat is a multi-billion dollar industry. This also makes it a huge strain on the people and the environment.

Every year, more and more of the Brazilian Rainforest is being cleared for grazing cattle, at an alarming rate of 55 acres per hamburger, to feed the American hunger for meat. Raising meat also wastes water (so much water!), destroys important native plants, and throws unbelievable greenhouse gases into the air. When we tear down trees to raise millions of carbonfarting animals, we create 18 percent of global greenhouse gases. I’ll be the first to admit, the agricultural industry also wastes and destroys at an alarming rate, but if I can at least cut one of these devils out of my life, I will.

Meat is also a secondary consumer. This means that about 10 pounds of plant protein is used to produce one pound of animal protein. Yes, animal protein can pack more nutrients per ounce, but that inexpensively produced grain could also go to ending world hunger. A recent Cornell study found that the grain used to feed U.S. livestock alone could feed 800 million people.

Yes, purely grass-fed meat is an option. We, here in Nebraska’s beef-basket, have access to a wealth of local producers who can butcher their own, self-controlled product without sending it to fatten at the feedlot. But we are not buying direct from our ranching neighbors. Unless we are fortunate, we are buying ground beef from Walmart. I know that

As an example, cows are given hormones to increase milk production. Because of the excess milk they are producing, their udders can become infected and to fight these infections they are given preventative antibiotics.

These hormones and antibiotics are later passed along to humans when they drink the milk produced by these cows.

However, the fear of consuming antibiotics and hormones should not be seen as a good reason to start a vegan diet. Instead, I would view it as a call toward living closer to the earth. Don’t support factory farms with your money. Instead, spend a little more for grass fed meat and eat less of it. The allocation of your funds toward purchasing “ethically raised” meat and animal products not only benefits your body, it benefits the animals that are raised to produce these food products. If you care about animals, demonstrate that care by giving your money to farmers who treat animals well.

Although strict veganism is not nutritionally beneficial, having vegan days or meals can be, if done correctly. If you cook vegan or vegetarian meals from scratch you can control the nutritional quality of your foods. If you are trying to reduce the amount of meat and animal products in your diet than choose one or two days a week, or one meal a day to eat only vegetarian or vegan meals. By doing this, you can learn to better integrate fruits and vegetables into your diet. You can also learn about vegan substitutions in baking that can benefit your health. You can substitute black beans or apple sauce for butter in your brownies – this is a great way to make what is technically a junk food a little more nutritionally dense.

In so many aspects of nutrition, balance is best. The consumption of meat is just one area of nutrition where that idea is demonstrated. So don’t eradicate meat from your diet. Eat meat. But do so intelligently.

I can’t solve world hunger by just skipping hamburgers, but given the complete nutrition I can receive from a vegetarian diet, it’s the least I can do.

The pro-meat crowd may mention, at this point, that vegetarians (and especially vegans) can lack many key nutrients, like B-12, which they don’t get from veggies.

This is true. It takes a little more effort to get important, fat-soluble vitamins like D and K from vegetables, but they still exist in meatless sources like kale and fermented soy. If those sound gross, remember that we live in an advanced society, with thousands of inexpensive supplements that actually gave me more vitamins than my old carnivorous diet.

There’s also statistically less risk for obesity, heart attack, kidney stones, and diabetes in veggie-world, including a far superior supplier of iron and a likelihood of living three and half years longer. If you feel brow-beaten by all this preaching, I apologize. I know throwing facts around is not an effective way to bring people to your side, but the facts still remain. We are endangering ourselves, and killing our planet, all for a bacon cheeseburger. But honestly, none of the anti-meat arguments I have presented are meat’s fault. By consuming local and natural sources of meat, you can be a very environmentally friendly meat eater.

By eating reasonable and chemical-free portions, you can neutralize the health concerns. By avoiding mass farms and feedlots, and equally irresponsible agricultural providers, you can help world hunger and the earth while still enjoying bacon. But this is easier said than done. It’s easier, for me, to just not eat meat than to support such an irresponsible and corrupt industry with my money. I don’t want suffering, waste, and death to be my legacy. I’d rather just have a guilt-free burrito, because I love steak, but not the plate it comes on.

Chattering from friends and a dim Student Center Ballroom set the mood for Steven Stone, comedian and hypnotist Sept. 2 as he proceeded to hypnotize several student volunteers.

Stone began the evening by welcoming the audience and providing feedback for those who wanted to go on stage and be hypnotized. Overall, students had to be willing to be hypnotized and have a wild imagination.

After students jumped up and down, cheered, and waved their arms to be called on stage, Stone filled all his seats and quickly began explaining the process of hypnosis and its positive effects to the volunteers and audience. Calming the volunteers by having them close their eyes and slowing their breathing, Stone soothed each individual into a hypnotic trance. Unfortunately, some individuals awoke throughout the experience and had to leave the stage, but those who remained in a hypnotic state provided the audience members, and even Stone, with entertainment.

Beginning with simple commands, volunteers awoke—still hypnotized—and reacted to a freezing room where their teeth clattered from shivering and they wrapped their arms around their bodies to keep warm. Some even curled into balls on their chairs and stuck their knees inside T-shirts or hoodies to stay warm. With one command Stone changed the scenario where the participants were in a warm room with no air conditioning, and with each sentence or tap to the forehead the individual got hotter and hotter. Participants were wiping their forehead with the backs of their hands or the sleeve of T-shirts; some were even fanning themselves to keep cool.

A short phrase from Stone and each person slid back into his or her chair to enjoy the refreshing breeze of cold air that came over them once the “air conditioner” was turned on them to cool off. Smiles and sounds of relief came from most of the participants as they enjoyed the coolness, right before going “back to sleep,” what Stone would do before giving the individuals a different scenario or task.

While the volunteers “slept,” Stone said they would all forget their name and how to spell it when asked. One individual, Justin Mohr, 19, freshman of Kimball, was also told that when someone forget his or her name, Mohr would yell at that individual and get angry about that person not

knowing. Mohr was also the last person Stone asked for a name from, when Mohr forget his name, the rest of the participants on stage turned on him for yelling at them, when he didn’t remember his own name.

As the evening went on Stone assigned each individual with various tasks, such as being a super star singer and singing happy birthday to an audience member, being guard to Stone’s balloons—but instead hiding the balloons in his shirt—and even some participants who mooed after a specific statement. Before Stone released the participants from their trance, he had them follow the dance of a sock monkey that Stone moved to the beat of a song.

He made sure all participants were seated in their chair and “sleeping” again, before counting down and releasing them from their hypnotic state. However, they would not be able to remember what happened until they looked in a mirror, and the first three people they shook hands with, each participant had to say “Git R Done” a saying made famous

by Larry the Cable Guy. As audience members and friends of the contestants wanted to test this last command, they approached their friend and shook his or her hand only to be met with a “Git R Done” reply.

One of the participants, Michaela Weverka, 19, sophomore of Callaway, did not intend to be on stage, but enjoyed the experience and even felt rested after.

“I actually went to the event to go get my friends so we could do some homework together,” Weverka said.

“Then they talked me into staying.”

Justin Schwartzkopf, 19, sophomore of Gering, attended the event but didn’t plan to go on stage until Stone mentioned that an hour of being hypnotized was equivalent to eight hours of sleep. Even though he enjoyed the experience, Schwartzkopf would rather watch from the audience the next time.

“I would try it probably but I think sitting in the crowd watching everyone would be more entertaining,” Schwartzkopf said.

Audience members were well entertained for the evening and participants got to experience a rare opportunity.

Eagles’ Paul, Jackson ground and pound Miners Eagles notch 40-27 win over Missouri S&T in on-road season opener Jordyn Hulinsky Managing Editor For the past three football season openers, CSC’s football team defeated Missouri Science & Technology. Winning 40-27 last Thursday, the Eagles held the Miners of Rolla, Missouri, to only 100 yards in the first half and shut out the Miners 17-0 going into halftime.

Redshirt freshman TD Stein, quarterback of Chadron, completed 17 of 26 passes for 206 yards, including one touchdown, in the competition. He also rushed for 27 yards on five carries.

“TD Stein played really well in his first collegiate start,” team captain and wide receiver Danny O’Boyle, senior of Gering, said.

Derek Jackson, sophomore tailback of Pueblo West, Colorado, scored three touchdowns on 12 carries for 44 yards. But Cody Paul, junior tailback of Seal Beach, California, led CSC with 132 rushing yards on 19 carries.

Paul also crossed into the end zone once in the fourth quarter.

Team captain and wide receiver Kyle Vinich, senior of Casper, Wyoming, caught a pass in the second quarter to add six to the scoreboard. Vinich marked 70 yards on four receptions.

place that I wanted to stay forever,” Reynolds said. “It was a stepping stone school that people go to for three or four years and then move on to bigger D-II or D-I schools.”

Reynolds said that he has no ambition of moving on to a large D-I university and that he likes the small school atmosphere.

“Chadron is a big fish in a little pond, and I like being a part of that,” Reynolds said.

4 runners, top 4 finishers, net women 1st place Jordyn Hulinsky Managing Editor Stealing the top four places at the first meet of the season, the women of the Eagle’s cross country team won the South Dakota School of Mines Hardrockers Open Meet Saturday by 30 points.

Beating her time from last year’s meet by 23 seconds, Rebecca Volf, senior of Wood River, completed the three-mile long course in 18 minutes, 37 seconds. Volf also won this meet last year.

Alyse Henry, freshman of Rock Springs, Wyoming, was the second Eagle to cross the finish line in a time of 18:44. Close behind her and finishing the race nine seconds ahead of her time last year, Jayme Nunes, senior of Alliance, finished in 18:58. Finishing out the top four places was junior of Chadron, Nicky Banzhaf, who crossed at the 19:04 mark, which was 15 seconds better than last season.

“Our team did so well because we had a strong pack,” Banzhaf said. “If we can keep practicing to motivate each other, and if we continue to encourage each other in races, we can keep

In 13th place, as the fifth Eagle to cross the line, Maggie Vinton, junior of North Platte, finished in 20:07. Two other Eagles finished in the top 20 runners—Sarah Townsend, senior of Douglas, Wyoming, in 15th place with a time of 20:21, and Sandra Palayo, junior of Cozad, in 17th place with a time of 20:31.

The CSC women took the meet with 23 points. The second place team, the host, the Hardrockers, were 30 points behind with 53.

Gillette College, with 70 points, was third, and Black Hills State University finished in fourth place with 79 points.

The men’s team didn’t finish as high up on the charts as the women. CSC men finished the

meet with 78 points in fourth place. Black Hills State University took the men’s race with 32 points, followed by Gillette College, 74 points, and South Dakota School of Mines, also with 74 points.

Dylan Stansbury, junior of Crawford, was the first Eagle to finish the five-mile race in fourth place with a time of 26:30. Stansbury beat his previous time at this race from last year by 50 seconds.

Phil Duncan, sophomore of Chadron, and Kyle Dietsch, junior of Sheridan, Wyoming, were the other two Eagles to finish in the top 20, with times of 27:40 and 28:06, respectively. Duncan crossed in 12th place, while Dietsch was in 17th.

The cross country team will hit the home turf

this weekend with its annual home meet beginning at 9 a.m., Saturday. The race will start at the practice football field.

“Since this week’s race isn’t one of our top priority races, we’re kind of training through it,” Volf said. “So I’m just trying to focus on putting the effort into every practice. Holding back in practice in fear of being sore for the race is only going to hurt us later in the season. We put in 75 miles a week and practice everyday twice a day, so it’s really important to stay positive and keep each other motivated; not just in practice but with classes and our personal lives as well.”

“This weekend I hope to stay closer to Becca and Alyse,” Nunes said. “We run strong when we run together. I hope we can push each other throughout the entire race. We have been training hard as team all week and we hold each other accountable. We can’t expect our teammates to give their best if we don’t do the same.”

Volf shared Nunes sentiments.

“I’m very blessed to have been able to call such an inspiring group of girls family for the past five years,” Volf said. “I can’t wait to see all of our hard work pay off this year and in the years to come.”

Last weekend the Eagles’ volleyball team played in a tournament in St. Angelo, Texas, for its season opener. They played four good teams, and although they did not get the outcome they wanted, they still managed to get some solid play from a few players that made the travel roster.

The first game was against Tarelton State, who went 24-8 last year and made a second round appearance in the NCAA regional tournament. The Eagles were led by Rudy Leasau, junior of LaMesa, California, who had a total of 16 kills against the Texanns and a total of 38 attempts. Lelalelei Nomura, senior of Pago Pago, American Samoa, and Madison Webb, freshman of Loveland, Colorado, had good defensive showings for the Eagles, racking up a combined total 24 digs out of the teams 54.

In the end, the young Eagles’ team was outmatched by the Texanns who overall had the more experienced team losing, 3-1.

In the second game of the day, the Eagles faced off against Angelo State University, who was the host team of the tournament. Senior Justine Ackie, of Phoenix, led the offensive attack with a total of 10 kills and 37 total attempts. Even though the Eagles fought hard, their efforts weren’t enough eventually losing to the Rams, 3-0.

The next day they faced off against Newman University, another non-conference opponent.

The Eagles again saw a good showing from Leasau who led the Eagles with 13 kills and 47 total attempts and senior Jamie McLain, of Chadron, who had a total of 18 digs. The Eagles just couldn’t pull of the win, losing 3-1.

The Eagles ended the weekend on a good note, pulling off a hard fought win again the University of Texas Permian Basin. Leasau again led the Eagles in kills with 10 and she had 22 total attempts. After a bumpy weekend, the Eagles showed some signs of life by pulling off an impressive 3-0 win.

They are set to play this Friday and Saturday at the University of Nebraska Kearney fall classic.

10 former Eagles inducted to CSC Hall of Fame Tayler Saunders Reporter On Sept. 2, it was released that there would be 10 new inductions to the Chadron State College Athletic Hall of Fame. The induction ceremony is set to follow the Oct. 31 football game against New Mexico Highlands. The inductees include five football players, one basketball star, a wrestler, and three individuals being recognized for their services at CSC. Don Watt is being recognized for years of service as an athletic trainer for the Eagles.

Watt was a student trainer at CSC while working on his bachelor’s degree and is now the head athletic trainer. After an injury that ended his athletic career he needed to stay in-

volved and “fell in love with training.”

“Chadron is home, it’s a great community filled with great people,” Watt said. That’s what has kept him here for so long. The late Ann Smith was not only a Chadron State professor and a coach for 25 years but was also a graduate of CSC. Smith was deeply involved in many aspects of the Physical Education department continuing after she resigned from coaching.

Steve Nelson was on both the track and football team in the 70s and was a volunteer pole vaulting coach for 17 years.

The five football stars all played in the late 1990s and include Casey Beran, of Sargent; Jess Clarke, of Alliance; Mike Fackrell, of Kemmerer, Wyoming; Jay Long, of Red Owl, South Dakota; and Brad Schulz, of Billings, Montana.

Beran was the Nebraska State College Athlete of the Year in 2000, and was also the first Eagle to get All-American and All-American Academic Honors. He is the CSC sack leader and has also been named to the RMAC Hall of Fame. Clarke has received many honors and his yardage totals are second on CSC’s alltime list. Despite two serious injuries, Fackrell was named first or second All-Conference three times. Jay Long is currently coaching his fourth season at Chadron State College and was a starter for three years and also wrestled.

Schulz also earned many awards starting at offensive tackle for four years including getting to play in a D-II All-Star game.

“When I first got the letter informing me that I was going to be in the Hall of Fame I was

overwhelmed with emotion,” Long said. “Everyone wants to leave a mark and this was a special moment for me and I am glad to share this with my former teammates and I have to thank my team, my coaches, and my family.”

He also said one of his greatest achievements was when former Coach Bill O’Boyle said he was the most intense player he has worked with.

Wrestler Jake Holscher qualified for the national tournament three times and has since rode his bike from California to Maryland to support tissue and organ donations.

The last inductee is Jim Rhodes, who averaged 24.2 points per game in 1966 and continues to hold the school’s record for most points in a season.

The Eagles will be competing at the RMAC Tournament No. 1 Monday and Tuesday in Longmont, Colorado.

Sports Editor Replacing John Axtell as the voice of the Eagles is no easy task, one that Dave Collins does not take lightly.

“Being the voice of a program for as many years as Mr. Axtell speaks to the dedication of his work covering CSC,” Collins said. “It’s an honor to be the new ‘Voice of the Eagles,’ and I’m looking forward to carving out a long career bringing Chadron State fans compelling game broadcasts and additional coverage through our coaches shows and on-air sports reports.”

Collins graduated from the University of Colorado, Boulder with a degree in journalism and a minor is history. He started work for KSID in Sidney in October 2004.

While at KSID, Collins covered over 900 athletic events.

“When I graduated, I looked all over the country for a job,” Collins said. “When I found the job in Sidney, that was how I got started and have been in western Nebraska ever since.”

“I’m looking forward to calling CSC athletics,” Collins said. “I want to get very involved with the athletic programs. Working with the coaches and players to provide the best broadcast I can for all the wonderful fans.”

Furrier, a team captain last season and this season, was named to the RMAC All-Conference Second Team and the Omaha World Herald All-Star Team last season. He led the team with 118 tackles and has a total of 231 career tackles, which is only 68 tackles away from being in the top-10 leading tacklers for CSC. This season, Furrier was named to the RMAC Preseason All-Conference Team. Two other Eagles were named to the same team: Paul, and Daniel Sotelo, senior offensive lineman of Grand Island.

Senior Cole Montgomery, team captain and safety of Casper, Wyoming; and senior cornerback KamRon Tomlinson, of Grandview, Missouri, each snagged an interception in the game.

“It was a lot of guys’ first college game and we I don’t think our O- saw a lot of good things line gets enough credit from the younger guys of how dominant they that played a lot for us,” can be either.

Montgomery said. “And the veterans looked like — Cole Montgomery, senior veterans. They all played of Casper, Wyoming crisp and everyone was having fun.”

Randy Wentz, junior kicker of Scottsbluff, made two field goals—33 yarder in first quarter and 34 yarder in fourth quarter—and four PATs. Wentz completed 12 of his 13 field goal attempts last season.

“We had some moments where we let off the gas a little (against S&T), which we never want to do,” Montgomery said. “But it was the first game and everyone learned some good things overall that we can clean up and be even better. I thought TD Stein had a good game overall and made the throws he needed to. Our run game was solid, as always. Cody and DJ were great and Kevin Coy made his mark. I don’t think our O-line gets enough credit of how dominant they can be either.

“Defensively, we had a lot of guys making plays. It’s nice getting Brian Wood back into the mix in the secondary and up front the D-line and linebackers had a pretty solid game wire to wire,” Montgomery said.

For the first time in history, the Eagles are on the road to play against Division I Missouri State University of Springfield, Missouri.

In the season opener, Paul led the Eagles in rushing yards in their win against Missouri Science and Technology. The Eagles won 40-27 last Thursday in Rolla, Missouri. Paul marked 132 rushing yards on 19 carries in the competition. He found his way into the end zone once in the fourth quarter.

Volf led the women’s cross country team to a first place finish Friday at the South Dakota Mines Hardrockers Open Meet. Volf crossed the finish line in first place with a time of 18 minutes 37 seconds. The team won the meet REBECCA VOLF with a score of 23 points.

So often the foods we eat and the activities we participate in are influenced by the marketing strategies of the companies who sell the food we buy.

If a food is advertised as fun and colorful, are we more likely to want to spend our money on it? If something is advertised as healthy, is it actually healthy or are we being manipulated as consumers? The best way to determine whether or not something is good for us is to be informed.

A simple way of pursuing awareness of nutritional information is to read the labels on the food we buy.

Often, when marketing a product, a manufacturer will boldly proclaim that the food item they are trying to sell is only X amount of calories per serving. However, without reading the nutrition label, you might not know that what appears to be a single serving of a food item is actually equal to two or three servings.

So if you purchase a coffee drink that is 220 calories per serving, but the bottle contains two servings that

single coffee is equal to 440 calories.

For many people that is nearly a quarter of a healthy calorie allowance!

When we do read nutrition labels, we might come across overwhelmingly long lists of ingredients. In most cases it is best to avoid these products as, in most cases, the more ingredients there are in a food product, the more processed it is.

This is particularly true when the nutrition label contains more chemicals than recognizable foods. Often it is highly processed food items that are advertised as low-fat and lowcarbohydrate. Ironically, these selfproclaimed diet foods often contain higher levels of sugar and chemicals than other, non-diet, foods.

Rather than being swayed by deceptive packaging avoid the frozen section and go back to a common sense diet: cook your food from scratch. Purchase fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, healthy oils, and lean meats.

By doing this, you are the one who controls the nutrient levels of the foods you eat.

If you are the one preparing your food, then you know exactly what ingredients are in the food you are consuming.

BRIEF CSC to celebrate Constitution Day

CHICKEN TINGA WEEK You heard right! Come in and get your Chicken Tinga fix this week. If you have not tried Tinga before, now is your chance!!!!

Next Thursday, in the Student Center Bordeaux and Lakota rooms, faculty members will present a panel to discuss the Oct. 2014 – June 2015 term of the Supreme Court in honor of Constitution Day. Constitution Day is celebrated every Sept. 17 by a Federal mandate.

The panel will last from 11 a.m.

– 12:30 p.m. Five faculty members—Michael Bogner, Nathaniel Gallegos, Robert Knight, Lisette Leesch, and Tracy Nobiling—will each present two cases from the Supreme Court and will take questions from the audience.

The audience members in attendance will be eligible for a drawing for an iPad Air 2, but they must be present to win.

CSC Miss Rodeo Pageant postponed The CSC Miss Rodeo pageant originally schedule for Saturday will be postponed until the spring semester.

Laure Sinn, student activities and

rangeland facility coordinator, said they only had one contestant sign up so the pageant will be postponed until the spring semester.

“What is your passion?”

“For academics, I’m into international politics or relationships, because I would like to see a peaceful future in the world. I can’t wait to work for the United Nations after school.

They have an intern program but I have to wait until before my senior year, so I still can’t do it yet.

“There are different interns, though, in the political affairs or the legal affairs department. I can’t tell you why exactly, but international politics are so interesting.

“Relationships are all interesting.

In Asia you are restricted by laws; you can’t do this or can’t do that. The

states are different. And in the United States there are no real international laws that restrict us from declaring war against any country.

“My goal is to address the need to be individual in the international society. It’s hard because every country has their own authority and they don’t want to give up their authority to the United Nations or give up their powers.

“It’s hard to build international laws, so we need peaceful international relationships to keep a more peaceful world.

“So, I guess that’s why.”
