CAB sets Homecoming deadlines, incentives for participation Melanie Nelson News Editor The CAB meeting Tuesday night focused on club Homecoming activities.

Each club is required to decorate a bed sheet, which can now be picked up in the Senate/CAB office. They are due at noon Sept. 30.

There is $50 in each club account for decorating supplies, but each club must contact Alyssa Bauer at abauer@csc.edu to make a Wal-Mart run. She is available at 10 a.m.

Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Clubs may nominate one candidate for Homecoming king and queen. Candidates must be a junior or senior and a member of the

club. Nominations are due by 4 p.m. Sept. 26.

Nominations for the CAB Homecoming representative are now open and will close next Tuesday.

All clubs are encouraged to enter a float in the Homecoming parade. The parade theme is still Mardi Gras, although the football game theme was changed to whiteout at last week’s meeting.

CAB Chair Molly O’Connell has a list of contacts that may loan a pickup or trailer for clubs to use in the parade.

CAB will have a drawing for a $300 and $200 prize. Clubs that participate in multiple Homecoming activities will get more entries in the drawing.

NSCS Trustees approve rural law recruitment program Jordyn Hulinsky Managing Editor The beginning steps for a proposed program called RLOP were approved at the Nebraska State College System’s Board of Trustees meeting Friday.

The Rural Law Opportunities Program will follow the pre-existing Rural Health Opportunities Program (RHOP).

This program will be for a selected number of Chadron State College and Wayne State College students. It will give provisional admittance to those students into the University of Nebraska—Lincoln College of Law. The program will recruit students from rural counties in Nebraska and the

The Board approved the use of $6,205,766 from the Deferred Maintenance Bonds 2016 funds to be used for the CSC Stadium Renovation/Replacement project.

There was also a policy change to allow international students to be considered for the non-resident tuition after completing one semester in the State College System.

CSC already had a similar policy in place, but this change will make it available for all the state colleges—Chadron State, Peru State, and Wayne State.

The Board’s next meeting is scheduled for Nov. 10-11.

In other CAB news: -O’Connell swore in Aaron Eagle, former representative of rugby, as Vice Chair of Records.

-Vice Chair of Programming Morgan Carrico announced that “Sully,” “Lights Out,” and “Now You See Me 2,” will play Sunday at Free Movie Night.

-Vice Chair Of Finance Gavan Archibald reported the total spent by clubs this year as $9,163.21 and the total remaining is $195,341.02. He also said the Activity Fee Board is still looking for CAB members to join.

Senate swears in new officials Chief justice and secretary positions are filled, and dorm hall senators are sworn in Jordyn Hulinsky Managing Editor Former Student Senate Secretary Sam Merrill stepped down from her position to accept the Senate President Katrina Hurley’s appointment to chief justice. Hurley said that Merrill was the only applicant for the chief justice position.

“I’m very excited to move from secretary to chief justice,” Merrill said. “Secretary was a great opportunity; however, because of my major and my legal way of thinking I think I will better serve Chadron as the chief justice.”

Olivia Vester, who was approved as a senator at the Aug. 29 meeting, was nominated to the secretary position. The only other nomination for secretary was Michael Steube,

who declined the nomination.

Dorm hall senators were sworn in: Steube, Andrews; Hershel Fosters, High Rise; and Teryn Blessin, Edna. Ashley Goad was also sworn in as an at large senator.

Hurley said there is still one at large senator, three dorm hall senators (Kent, Brooks, Eagle Ridge), and one justice of the court position open. She said there is also two openings on the constitutional committee.

Senate Vice President of Finance Curtis Stevens reported $114,376.10 in unallocated funds.

CAB presented its budget for the semester. They are asking for a total of $16,428. The breakdown is for four Free Movie Nights, $8,928; 10 Friday night activities, $1,000; club co-sponsored events, $2,000; Homecoming activities, $500; and one or two large events, $4,000. The vote will be next week after an open forum at 7 p.m. today in the Lakota/ Bordeaux Rooms. The first Free Movie Night is this Sunday so the senators will vote on the allocation for that event in an online vote Friday.

Senate approved the CSC strength club as an official CAB member.

Student Trustee Coy Clark reported that the Board of Trustees met Thursday and Friday. The Board approved the beginning process of starting the RLOP (rural law opportunity program). This program will be similar to the RHOP (rural health opportunity program) but for the law programs. The hope is to have the program implemented next year.

Nominations for the Board of Trustees Teaching Excellence award are due Oct. 3.

Pat Beu, senior director of student affairs, said that there are 200 students that are unable to use Sakai or their meal plans as of Monday because they have a bill of more than $500. Beu suggested senators pay attention to issues, like this, that are affecting a large number of their constituents.

Senators wishing to go to the Peru State Conference on Oct. 27-28 need to submit an application to Hurley by 10 p.m. Sept. 30.

Josh Mayer, representing ROTC (Reserve Officers’ Training Corps), brought the beginning stages of a 5k obstacle course that will be organized in memory of Sgt. Cory Mracek.

BRIEFS CSC hosts suicide prevention walk Chadron Out of the Darkness Walk, an event to raise suicide awareness, will be conducted on Sept. 24. Registration for the walk will begin at 9:30 a.m. on CSC’s campus.

Trump, Clinton: Both in the alt-wrong Donald Trump has dedicated a significant portion of his campaign to discussing immigration, despite the fact that only about 8 percent of Americans rank it as the most important problem facing this country. However, hidden within the immigration front is an ulterior agenda that Hillary Clinton was recently so kind as to point out.

Trump’s agenda is appealing to the Alternative Right or alt-right, which, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center, is a set of far-right ideologies, groups and individuals whose core belief is that white identity is under attack by multicultural forces using political correctness and social justice to undermine white people and their civilization.

Although Trump has never come out to publicly declare that he supports, or is even affiliated with, the altright, he has given them a platform. A group that was previously hidden in secluded corners of the Internet has now gained national attention.

While Hillary Clinton did her best

to wash her hands of anything to do with the alt-right she simultaneously gave her best shot at tying Trump to the community of activists. In doing so, she has done just as much, or more, damage than Trump.

On Thursday, Aug. 25, Clinton gave a speech in Reno, Nevada, that condemned Trump for building his campaign on “prejudice and paranoia,” and for “taking hate groups mainstream and helping a radical fringe take over the Republican Party.” She went on to say that Trump has let the alt-right effectively take over the Republican Party by hiring on Stephen Bannon, the head of a right-wing website called breitbart.com, as campaign CEO. There is no doubt that there were better options for the Trump Campaign CEO than Bannon, but the Trump campaign has simply become a natural landing place for the altright. Trump has made his campaign a comfortable place for these activists to hide by suggesting and supporting anti-immigration policies, proposing a

Muslim ban, and generating authoritarian rhetoric, among other things.

Where Clinton went wrong was when she acknowledged the alt-right.

When members of the alt-right heard that the Democratic presidential nominee had mentioned their group, it gave them validation that they are credible and have real power. Not only that, but it gave them a valuable opportunity to fundraise and recruit.

Some members of the alt-right took to Twitter to express their feelings about the publicity they received from Clinton. One of which was @ bunkerwsmith who tweeted “Did you ever imagine that in August of the Current Year we’d be tweeting about #HillarysAltRightSpeech? How far we’ve come!”

It is easy to slap all of the blame for the rise of the alt-right on Trump for creating a haven for the group. But when both candidates are validating such evil, and giving activists the public attention they thrive on, then both have blood on their hands.

Use 9/11 as inspiration to do good Don’t use the memory of 9/11 to spread more pain and hatred Johnathan Cross Contributor With the 15th anniversary of one of the most horrific tragedies in American history, it is only appropriate that we all take a moment to reflect its aftermath, both bad and good. Our country has changed exponentially since that disheartening morning and those “102 minutes that changed America.”

Looking with the naked eye, one could come to the conclusion that we’ve gone nowhere but downhill since in the past 15 years. Whereas others, in a rather ghoulish light, view the happenings of that day as the gateway of national revitalization. Before 9/11, it’s agreeable that we were slowly distancing ourselves as an entity. And through the misery of terrorism, our country stopped everything that preoccupied us from one another, and stood together as one.

Americans—men and women, young and old, black, white and polka dot­—all felt the same indescribable feelings in the pits of our stomachs. We knew that through our tenacity and patriotism, our nation would live on. What was highly undetermined, however, were the ramifications and nature of livelihood thereafter.

tacks, that day-to-day operations were forever impacted. This left the public in a state of unnerving paranoia.

Since then, metal detectors and x-ray scanners have made their way into airports and civic centers across the country; backpacks and coolers aren’t allowed into a baseball games without hassle. We’ve become distrusting as a species, which evolved into a political animal in of itself.

Our fear gave birth to phenomena like helicopter parenting and put our ever-growing bloodlust toward islamophobia into overdrive.

For thousands, their loved ones died and their occupations were demolished. In other respects, the aforementioned American pride was wearing paper thin. As local news broadcasts streamed live from New York and pundits began philosophizing the weeks and years to come; not too many people stopped to ask themselves the real underlying question: What exactly was the meaning behind initial incentives and where did the national mourning end, and thoughts of warfare begin?

It’s time for our mindsets to change.

Think to yourself, the upsides of our new era in the USA. In recent years, we’ve accomplished equality for the homosexual community as well

as continuously strove for gender equality. On a national scale, we’ve opened our hearts and minds to the acceptance of multiculturalism; watching as the etched bigotry of previous generations increasingly ebb away.

Of course we still have racial conflict in this country, as heartbreaking as it is to say. We still experience episodes of terror around the world and the media does nothing but constantly pump that darkness into our airwaves and television screens. It’s up to us to make that change.

Another outlier in all of this was our sudden sense of gratitude. Sometimes it takes tragedy to bring us all together. But, our graciousness seems to fall short when facing matters headon. The blessings and homage is only paid temporarily, and with a pinch, we’re right back to the drawing board.

Let’s put our energy toward creating a bright future nationwide, rather than continue to fight and dwell on the horrors of our past. Leave the vendettas and conspiracies at the door and just remember that more than 3,000 people lost their lives in a barbaric action. The reality is burdensome enough; we don’t need added commentary.

Allow 9/11 to stand as a memorial for the innocent men and women in those towers; not our bickering. Please, don’t re-blog memes depicting the towers crumbling with the caption, “Who’s still pissed? I am!” because actions like this only promote more hatred which in return, only bring on more opportunity for vulnerability.

Unneeded vengefulness and the inability of squashing grudges will serve as our deathblow if we keep it up. Enough time has been wasted spreading negative energy. Beyond the domestic and international conflicts that are occupy-

Do everything in your power to eliminate hatefulness on your campus, in your household, in your communities and at your workplace. Take the fire burning inside of you and transform it into strengthening fellowships, educating the ignorant as well as developing our own tolerances and understandings for other walks of life as well. What religion you practice or the region of heritage has zero impact on you personally.

We have clubs and interest groups on campus with mission statements that ensure each individual member is not discriminated against due to their race, sexual orientation or gender.

Remember that our towers were struck because of turmoil, not because of peace.

Day in and day out there’s spokespeople telling us what our country needs. I hear about it constantly as we approach the presidential election. Well, this is my two cents.

Release your preconceived notions and tiresome feuds for the productivity of civilization.

Be that shining light piercing through the darkness; open your eyes to the goodness in the world that’s out there desperately waiting to be spotlighted in a time of such forecasted evil. Instead of littering the streets and vandalizing our communities in outcry; represent the bravery of those who died while in rescue. Uphold the definition of the lyrics in our national anthem to the same level they did. Be uplifting in this new era of our world. If America truly is the land of the free and the home of the brave, then it’s about time we start demonstrating those values. Bravery is not measured in angst or uproar; but by how far you’re willing to go in spite of that.

On Thursday and Friday, the Board of Trustees of the Nebraska State College System met at the College Center in South Sioux City, to showcase the partnership between Wayne State College and Northeastern Community College. On Thursday afternoon, I, along with the student trustees from Wayne and Peru, attended a luncheon, followed by a meeting of the Student Affairs, Marketing and Enrollment Committee.

The meeting began with Dean Jacobs of Wayne giving a presentation and an overview of a study-abroad trip, during which he led Wayne State students into the Amazon Rain Forest to study the culture of an indigenous tribe for two weeks.

The Board considered an agreement between the University of Nebraska—Lincoln College of Law and Wayne State and Chadron State Colleges to create the Rural Law Opportunities Program (RLOP). This program will be modeled off the RHOP program. The exact details of the program have yet to be worked out, but we are hopeful

the program will be up and running by this time next year.

The Board made an alteration to multiple policies during the meeting. These policy changes allowed international students to be considered for the non-resident tuition after one semester in the State College System.

This change, primarily affects Wayne, as Chadron and Peru already have similar policies in place at the college level. Also, there was an alteration in the graduation requirements regarding duplicated and unduplicated credit hours for each major.

Peru State College also received an allocation for a renovation of their theater. During the project, the inside of the current theatre will be remodeled and an appendage will be added to the building as a lobby area.

Other votes and allocations included granting Chancellor Stan Carpenter the ability to sign a contract, launching an advertisement campaign for the State College System. Hopefully the campaign will allow more parents and prospective students to hear about the system and, in turn, will boost our enrollment. Also, the Board made a one-time allocation from cash reserves to make up a deficit that was created by a recent Department of Labor regulation. That regulation extended overtime protection for employees.

A word from the Student Senate President This week in Student Senate we swore in a new Chief Justice: Samantha Merrill. Chief Justice Merrill is a sophomore majoring in legal studies. She will be a great addition to our court system.

We also swore in four new senators: Herschel Foster, the High Rise senator; Mike Steube, the Andrews senator; Teryn Blessin, the Edna senator; and Ashley Goad, the senator at large.

We have positions open at large, E.H.P.C.P.S.W., and Liberal Arts. Please apply as soon as possible. We would like to fill the seats of Senate as soon as possible so that the Senators can attend the Senate Training Sept. 24. Syerra’s Current legal system underplays rape cases Square Syerra Wycoff Bagshaw Columnist Before I begin my narrative, I want to stress that the behavior from officers that I am condemning is not behavior exhibited by all officers, nor are all officers incompetent at their job. Most, in fact, are attentive and do their job the way they should; however, statistically speaking, the amount of police officers that shirk their responsibilities have cataclysmic effects.

There have been numerous reports and documentation that demonstrate police departments’ inadequacy at investigating rape cases. In fact, a good percentage of them go “unfounded;” this legal term meaning that the cases are baseless or false. In Scottsdale, Arizona 46 percent of rape cases were declared unfounded; in Oxnard, California,

over half. The statistic evidence of how many rape cases that are declared unfounded are staggering, and a great number of the offenders involved have previous sexual offenses or go on to commit more. In Baltimore County, a study investigated 42 rape case files and an analysis reported the following patterns: • Police officers did little-to-no investigation outside of the initial interview with the victim,

• Detectives specializing in sex crimes often dismissed the allegation after reading the officer’s report without ever contacting the victim, • Officers were dismissing cases on the basis that the victim didn’t fight back enough to establish force by the offender.

The police officers in question indicate that a victim must exhibit some sort of fight in order to convict his or her offender; however, if a victim honestly and reasonably believes that he or she may come to harm if he or she resists, how can the police officers then hold the victim responsible for his or her rape?

Rape, Abuse, and Incest National Network reports that out of every 1,000 rape incidents 334 are reported; 63 of these 334 reports lead to arrest; 13 out of the 63 arrests get referred to prosecution; seven out of the 13 prosecuted offenders get felony

convictions; and six of these seven convicted offenders get incarcerated. In short, out of every 1,000 rapes, 994 rapists walk free.

These numbers are positively horrifying.

It is our job as a society to educate ourselves, to promote consent and respect in the hopes that victims report these incidents; however, it is the civil duty and responsibility for our officers to act in such a way that protects victims, validates their reports, and ensures a conviction for their offenders.

When I worked at a Public Defender’s office I witnessed firsthand the hostility and bias of officers toward victims. It is no wonder why victims are afraid to come forward when the entire legal system is against them.

Every eight seconds, a sexual assault occurs in the United States, it’s an epidemic that can only be put to a halt if we all make ourselves aware of our shortcomings and improve the criminal justice system.

Alejandro Garcia, graduate student of Pine Bluffs, Wyoming, led the Chadron State cross country team to its second victory of the year at CSC’s annual home meet. Eight of the top ten 10 to cross the finish line at Saturday’s race were Eagles.

Garcia completed the hilly 8-km course in 25 minutes, 26 seconds, which was a nine second improvement from his time last week on a flat course.

Dylan Stansbury, senior of Crawford, earned second place overall with a time of 26:39 followed by juniors Phillip Duncan, of Chadron, and Eric Yager, of Hot Springs, South Dakota, in fourth and fifth places, respectively.

Other Eagles in the top 10 were Kyle Dietsch, senior of Sheridan, Wyoming; Riley Howard, freshman of Anchorage, Alaska; Joseph Gertner, senior of Fort Morgan, Colorado; and Taylor Dick, sophomore of Douglas, Wyoming, in seventh, eighth, ninth, and 10th places.

CSC men dominated the team scores with 19 points followed by South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, Rapid City, with 46, and Central Wyoming College, Riverton, with 103 points.

On the women’s side, Margaret Vinton, senior of North Platte, led the Eagle to second place as a team,

just one point behind South Dakota School of Mines, Rapid City. Vinton ran the 5-km course in 19:59 for second place overall behind SDSMT’s Adeline Straatmeyer.

Chadron State freshmen Kiya Passero, of Chadron; Dominique Oden, of Anaheim, California; Savannah Silbaugh, of Upton, Wyoming; and, earned sixth, seventh, and eighth places, respectively.

Taylor Allison, junior of Gordon, placed 10th “I’m happy with where the ladies are running this season for being such a young team,” Head Cross Country Coach Brian Medigovich said.

SDSMT won the women’s side with 32 points, CSC brought in 33 points, and Central Wyoming College earned 85.

The Eagles will travel to the Roy Griak Invitational Meet in Flacon Heights, Minnesota, on Sept. 24.

According to Medigovich, there will be Divison I, Divison II, and Divison III races as well as high school races at the Roy Griak Invitational. The Eagle runners will compete against about 400 runners, about 40 teams, in the Divison II race.

Medigovich said he expected the men to run well this year with so many upperclassmen on the team and, so far, they are doing just that. He expects the men to earn a spot in the top five at their next meet.

Mesa jumps Chadron, climbs in national poll Preston Goehring Sports Editor Colorado Mesa University, Grand Junction, on the back of quarterback Sean Rubalcaba, senior of Grand Junction, Colorado, racked up 513 total yards, Saturday, enough to hand the Eagles their first loss of the season, 47-33.

Rubalcaba threw for nearly 400 yards, good for two touchdowns against the Eagles’ secondary. Both scores went to Virnel Moon, junior of El Cajon, California, who caught five passes for 161 yards.

Before battling CSC, Mesa was ranked No. 25 in the American Football Coaches Association poll. The Mavericks have since jumped up to the No. 23 spot.

Two Mavs were selected as RMAC Players of the Week. Dustin Rivas, junior of Thornton, Colorado, earned Defensive Player of the Week, grabbing three interceptions, returning one for a score. Rivas was a preseason All-RMAC selection.

Mesa’s kicker Ryan Sheehan, junior of Chandler, Arizona, earned the Special Teams Player of the Week. He hit four field goals in as many attempts, 37 yards being the longest.

Courtland Joshua, senior of Donaldsonville, Louisiana, led the Eagles in tackles with nine, while safeties Ryan Wood, senior of Stockton, California, and Kirk Durtsche, redshirt sophomore of Casper, Wyoming, combined for 15.

The special teams unit came up with another blocked punt that resulted in a touchdown. Jack

Dobyns, junior of Tucson, Arizona, blocked the punt, and Zecharie James, junior of Hampton, Virginia, grabbed it, and returned it 25 yards for the score.

Offensively, CSC gained 446 yards through the air but struggled on the ground, only gaining 99 yards. Kevin Coy, redshirt sophomore of Davenport, Florida, led all Eagles with 49 rushing yards.

Quarterback TD Stein, redshirt sophomore of Chadron, completed 13 passes for 175 yards, a touchdown and one of the interceptions. Stein’s touchdown pass went to Marcus Brown, senior of Colorado Springs, Colorado, for 76 yards, early in the second quarter.

After Stein exited the game early in the second half, junior Matt Vinson, of Box Elder, South Dakota, threw for 172 yards on 12 completions, one score, and two interceptions.

Vinson’s scoring pass went 69 yards to redshirt freshman Brandon Fullerton, of Riverton, Wyoming. Max Gray, redshirt sophomore of Arlington, Washington, led the receivers in total yards, with 104, on 12 grabs.

According to Head Coach Jay Long, the starting quarterback for Saturday’s game against Western State Colorado University, Gunnison, will be a game time decision.

The Mountaineers are currently 1-1 overall and in the RMAC. Leading Western’s offensive attack is runningback Austin Ekeler, senior of Eaton, Colorado, who ran for 123 yards and three touchdowns last week.

Kickoff is set for noon Saturday at Elliott Field.

Golfers struggle at RMAC tournament Justine Stone Lifestyles Editor The CSC women’s golf team finished just five strokes from the bottom spot in the RMAC Tournament No. 1 in Denver Tuesday. The Eagles finished 13th out of 14 teams.

Sam Rahmig, sophomore of Gering, shot 89 strokes on the first day and 91 on the second for a total of 180 to put her as the Eagle’s top finisher in 52nd place overall out of 75 golfers. Rahmig

has led the Eagles both meets this season.

Following Rahmig was Sydney Owen, freshman of Rapid City, South Dakota with a two-round total of 186.

She shot a 91 on the first day and a 95 on the secRahmig ond, tying for 58th place.

The Cameco Mountain Bike race is a 1315 mile trail race through the Nebraska Pine Ridge National Forest starting at 8:45 a.m.

Running events including a half marathon, 10k, and a 5k run/walk. The half marathon starts at 9 a.m. and costs $45. All running events will be on Sunday.

CSC’s accompanist dazzles M. Hall crowd A single light illuminates the ebony grand piano. It’s on the otherwise dark stage in Memorial Hall’s auditorium. Black curtains and the cool temperature contrast the hot, sunny weather outside.

When solo pianist Bobby Pace, enters, his bright blue shirt matches the clear Sunday sky. Pace, born in St. Petersburg, Florida, is an alumni of Stetson University in Deland, Florida, as well as a graduate of Florida State University of Tallahassee.

He has accomplished much in his career as a pianist, playing in several different locations across the country and internationally in places like Vipeteno, Italy. He is the cur-

rent accompanist at Chadron State College.

From start to finish, Pace illustrated his skill with quick, energetic pieces such as: “Piano Sonata in G Major” by Franz Joseph Haydn, “Excursions” by Samuel Barber, “Abegg Variations” by Robert Schumann, “Nocturne No. 6 in D-flat Major” by Gabriel Faurè, and “Berceuse in D-flat Major” by Frèdèric Chopin. By the sound, his fingers appeared to flawlessly strike their mark on the keys.

Although the audience to witness this performance was roughly 50 senior citizens spread sparsely around the 700-seat auditorium, they were intent on the notes of Pace’s solo. A single whistle and the enthusiastic applause of the crowd expressed their approval.

When creating your profile, it is important to be honest. For example, if you’re not fond of working with extremely young children make sure to specify that. Being honest with your comfortable levels helps to ensure finding your perfect fit. Before you Skype with the family compose a list of question such as what the living accommodations will be and what your expected tasks will be. This will give you a better sense of the situation thus lessening pre-adventure jitters.

One of the most exciting feelings is when you first meet your family at the airport. Seeing the girls I au paired for in Spain eagerly waiting holding signs with my name on them was an experience I will not forget. Make sure to have all of your travel plans lined up and verified with the family before you leave the United States. A working phone or access to Wi-Fi might not be available when you first land.

A major benefit to being an au pair is free room and board plus you’re getting paid to live in a new part of the world. It is important to make yourself go out and meet new people to feel more a part of the community as well as battle potential homesickness. Taking weekend excursions enables you to explore more of the world. Spending time with your host family is also paramount to fully experiencing your new epic journey.

The key to becoming an au pair is being willing to try new adventures. It is quite common for people staying abroad to become nationalistic toward their home country. Face the new experience head on because you’ll never know what can be waiting around the corner.

Robilotta inspires laughter to grow Melanie Nelson & Preston Goehring News Editor & Sports Editor Student Senate sponsored speaker James Robilotta to give a leadership development seminar to CSC students Tuesday in the Student Center Ballroom.

The seminar had two sessions, “More Action, Less Title: Empowering Student Leaders To Do More” at 4 p.m., and “Will They Make Fun of My Sheets?” at 7 p.m.

Robilotta, a native New Yorker, is a professional speaker, personal coach, and author.

In the leadership session, he used his own college experiences as a new student, and an RA, to help relate his information to the audience. He focused on three things that a leader should do: challenge, motivate, and appreciate.

He explained how important a leader can be in an individual’s life, and good tips to make a strong first impression, and have a working positive relationship.

At the later session, Robilotta opened with an anecdote about dislocating his knee at his senior prom.

“I encourage you to laugh with me, or at me,” Robilotta said.

traits through stories and jokes, Robilotta asked the audience to share some of their own.

“I think we as humans bond over our weird quirks,” he said.

Robilotta said that college is the time for us to figure out why we are who we are. Yet he said college was miserable for him at first.

He was homesick and lonely, until the day he received an invite to the hall student government meeting.

He had found his place in college and everything turned around.

He encouraged the students to try something new. He said college is the perfect time to start.

“We have to always be working at writing our story,” he said.

Robilotta told students instead of being quick to judge, we should listen to people’s stories and start appreciating each other more to support our campus community.

He warned the audience not to get stuck in our daily patterns and live a safe life. Instead, find something that keeps you moving.

“Talking about passion is cheesy, but I fricken love cheese y’all,” Robilotta joked.

On a serious note, he ended by saying that living with purpose is what pushes us through the hard times. Without it, we’re stuck.

‘Pete’s Dragon’ provides audience sense of family Erika Geary Reporter “Pete’s Dragon” starts with a scene of a couple traveling through the mountains. They have their young son, Pete, with them. Pete is reading his parents a book about a dog named Elliot. As he is reading a deer comes into the road, causing his father to swerve.

Both of Pete’s parents die in the rollover. Being the brave boy his mother told him he was, he picks up his book and heads into the forest.

A pack of wolves that surround him gets scared off. Pete turns around and sees a dragon.

Pete asks the dragon if it is going to eat him, then Pete touches the dragon after it calmly approaches him and the fur turns a bright green color.

Jump ahead six years.

Grace Meacham is a forest ranger who is serious about her work in the woods. She has a passion for nature and wants to protect it. She lives in the small town of Millhaven with her father.

Mr. Meacham is a wood carver who is known for his stories about a mysterious dragon that ‘lives’ in the forest which Grace is working to protect. The local children come by their home to listen to Mr. Meacham, and Grace listens in disbelief before heading to work.

Grace is in the forest with a coworker and hears a noise. This noise leads her to an owl in a tree. Grace sets her things down and marks the tree with blue spray paint to protect it from the lumberjacks who are working in the area.

As Grace is following the owl Pete follows quietly behind. While Grace is marking the tree he grabs the com-

The next day the lumber crew and Gavin, their leader, are out cutting away. Gavin’s brother, Jack, and niece, Natalie, show up. Shortly after they arrive so does Grace. Jack and Grace are engaged to each other. While they try to talk to Gavin about how many trees he is cutting down Natalie makes her way into the woods.

Pete is in the area and Natalie finds him. She attempts to climb the tree he is in and slips, screaming. Grace, Jack, and Gavin come running and Pete tries to run. Gavin catches him, but Pete falls and hits his head.

hospital room. Instantly terrified, he opens the window and escapes.

While this is going on, Gavin and his men seek out Pete’s hiding spot, armed with guns. Elliot ends up revealing himself, but survives by knocking their guns away.

Now knowing that the dragon from the Millhaven Fables does exist, Gavin gets greedy and tries to find Elliot once again. Gavin succeeds. However, his efforts to become rich and famous are opposed

by Grace, Natalie, Jack, Pete, and Mr. Meacham.

In the end, Elliot escapes and Pete gets adopted by the newlyweds. After his recent adventures, Mr. Meacham,

refuses to tell another tale about the dragon of the Millhaven Forest.

The closing scene shows Pete with his new family, as they watch Elliot fly away with his.

Large and furry, “Pete’s Dragon,” will leave you with a warm feeling of protection and sense of family. This movie is well written and has a great story line. I enjoyed watching it in a theater filled with young families.

Each scene captivates the attention of the audience. The bond between each character is clear and easy to understand. I appreciated the entire plot and enjoyed a few laughs as well. I strongly recommend watching this film.
