Social Work Club will host ‘Not Asking For It’ sexual assault workshop Evan Clark Advertising Account Executive

Students, faculty and staff will have the opportunity to learn more about sexual assault at the Principle Players meeting hosted by the Social Work Club.

The conference will focus on “Not Asking For It: A Workshop On Sexual Assault” with Brian Van Brunt as the keynote speaker.

Van Brunt has three sections throughout the day focusing on consent, bystander intervention and survivor presentation. Van Brunt will go more into detail answering questions and talking about what it means to have consent, what consent is, ways to prevent sexual assault, how sexual assault happens, what to do if you see it, and the best way to respond to a friend telling you they have been assaulted.

Van Brunt joined the NCHERM Group as Senior Vice President in January 2013. He has a doctoral degree in counseling supervision and

education from the University of Sarasota/Argosy and a master’s degree in counseling and psychological services from Salem State University.

Van Brunt is a regular speaker for academic conferences around the world, along with presenting dozens of workshops with the American College Counseling Association (ACCA), National Association of Forensic Counselors (NAFC), American College Personal Association (ACPA), Association of University College Counseling Center Directors (AUCCCD), Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education (NASPA), and the European Congress on Violence in Clinical Psychiatry (OUD).

Along with giving presentations, Van Brunt has presented hundreds of online training seminars and classes. Well over 150,000 individuals, staff and faculty at universities and colleges across the country have utilized his trainings. He has developed training modules on violence, mental health, and suicide preven-

The workshop on Wednesday, Oct. 14 will begin with registration from 8-8:30 a.m. At 8:30 a.m., Jon Hansen, vice president of enrollment management, marketing and student services, will start the introductions, present the colors, and give a general overview of the day. The theatre department will begin its first play from 9-9:15 a.m., which will be followed by a discussion and crowd interaction. The first presentation by Van Brunt about consent will begin at 9:30 a.m. Following Van Brunt at 10 a.m., Sonja Dressel will talk about social media, and how it can be used for sexual assault. She is also talking about apps that can be used on campus to prevent sexual assault.

At 1:45-2:15 p.m., police will be coming to talk about the law enforcement side of sexual assault. The theatre department will be performing its final play with the crowd discussion at 2:15-2:30 p.m. Van Brunt will be giving his final presentation about survivors of sexual assault at 2:30-4 p.m. After the survivor presentation Hansen and the senior class will be closing the ceremony by thanking everyone and retiring the colors.

Senate currently has $127, 942.61 in unallocated funds.

There will be a suicide prevention walk coming up soon. The coordinator will present about this walk to Student Senate at next week’s meeting.

Clayton Hinman was petitioned into Student Senate as the Liberal Studies senator. There are five open positions on Student Senate: two at large, one High Rise dorm, and two School of E.H.P.C.P.S.W. It was emphasized at the meeting that the school expects positive attitudes from the senators at all times. They are expected to always conduct themselves in a professional manner. They should also not talk negatively about Senate.

If there are issues, the senators should bring them to a Student Senate meeting.

A leadership conference will come to campus on Nov. 12. The potential speakers are Brian Banks, a formal NFL player; John Dau, a Sudan Genocide Escapee; and Sandra Fluke, an empowerment speaker. These speakers will mainly be presenting on different aspects of leadership.

CAB asked Senate to approve the LARP Society and Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation clubs as clubs.

CAB also requested no more than $2,000 to go towards Free Movie Nights, which starts this Sunday. There will be an online vote that could approve this request. Two of the movies playing are “Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials” and “Hotel Transylvania 2.”

The concert being hosted by Chi Alpha and Revive that was approved by CAB has now been presented to Senate.

They are asking no more than $5,500 to be allocated for the concert. Students will have the opportunity to voice their

opinions at next week’s Student Senate meeting.

There will be an outdoor movie night using the inflatable movie screen approved by CAB and Senate tonight behind Kent Hall and High Rise.

Senate stressed that the NSCS board meetings, such as the ones that were hosted by CSC, are open to the public, but the committee meetings are not open to the public.

Senate approved the allocation of no more than $1,300 for the Homecoming laser tag event. The coordinators of the laser tag event may ask if ROTC would allow them to borrow some of their bunkers and camouflage to add to the other bunkers that have already been arranged for the event.

There will be a formal dedication of the new Rangeland Complex at 9 a.m., Saturday. The formal dedication of the Chicoine Center will be at 10:30 a.m., Saturday.

First Galaxy Series today Grammy Award winning singer Kathy Mattea is the first installment of the Galaxy Series, which begins at 7 p.m., today.

BRIEFS Chicoine, Rangeland dedication Saturday As part of Family Day this weekend, the Rangeland Complex/Coffee Agriculture Pavilion and the Chicoine Center opening will be celebrated.

The dedication of the Rangeland building will be from 9 – 9:30 a.m., Saturday. The Chicoine dedication will be from 10:30 – 11 a.m., Saturday.

Supervisor of Education at federal prison camp to present at CSC Students in the FYI 196X: Survival Skills 101 course are hosting Kyle Roberson, supervisor of Education at a federal prison camp in Yankton, South Dakota, on Oct. 1. Roberson will give three free presentations in the Lakota and Ponderosa rooms in the Student Center at 9:30 – 10:45 a.m., 12:20 – 1:45 p.m., and 7 – 8:30 p.m. Space for these presentations is limited.

CAB sets homecoming week schedule Justine Stone News Editor

The clubs in CAB have spent $12,742.81 and have $141,022.09 remaining in the account.

There will be an open forum at next week’s Senate meeting for discussion over the $5,500 that Chi Alpha and Revive are asking to be allocated for the concert. If students have an opinion on the subject, they should go to the meeting to voice their opinion.

The Family Fun Day and color run are this Saturday. Registration for the color run is at 8:30 a.m. and the run is at 9 a.m at the Clock Tower.

Homecoming royalty nominations are due Monday. To nominate someone for royalty, go to the CSC website, search royalty nominations and there will be a link. The nominees for Homecoming are required to have at least 60 credit hours.

The nominees for CAB are Ty Grasz and Analise Garland.

From 10 – 11 a.m., Tuesday, there will be a Walmart run for clubs to get supplies for floats and bed sheets. All clubs are required to participate in Homecoming by doing a bed sheet, float, or both.

Pictures of the Homecoming royalty nominees will be on Sept. 30 and Oct. 1.

Bed sheets are due on Oct. 2 in the CAB office and are currently available for clubs to pick up in the CAB office. It has not yet

been determined when royalty voting will open because it depends on IT, CAB Chair Stephanie Steele said. Voting for Homecoming royalty closes and bed sheet voting opens at noon, Oct. 5. Bed sheet voting closes at noon, Oct. 7.

The Homecoming events are as follows: Oct. 5 – bonfire; Oct. 6 – neon day and laser tag in the NPAC; Oct. 7 – pink out day, coronation, bed sheet winners, lighting of C-Hill; Oct. 8 – camo day, Late Night at The Pit camo dance; Oct. 9 – school spirit day, quidditch at 4 p.m. hosted by RLA; Oct. 10 – 5K walk/run at 8 a.m., parade at 9:30 a.m., football game at 1 p.m., formal dance. No time has been set for the dance yet.

CAB asked for no more than $2,000 to be allocated for Free Movie Night. Free Movie Night is at 7 p.m., Sunday. The first 300 students to arrive get in free, after that they will have to pay.

Free Bowling Night is scheduled for Nov. 14.

CAB is co-sponsoring a movie night Oct. 30 with RLA. There will be an Out of the Darkness Community Walk on Oct. 3. The coordinators for this event are in the Student Center from 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m., today to give student information about registering for this walk. The walk is three miles around town and raises awareness for suicide prevention. For more information on the walk, you can visit AFSB.org.

Family Day Weekend will be celebrated this Saturday and Sunday. A pancake breakfast will be served at Memorial Hall Lobby from 7:30 - 10 a.m., Saturday. The Chadron State College band members sponsor the breakfast and there will be a charge to be paid at the door.

Registration for the “Powder to the People” 5k run will begin at 8:30 a.m. The

race will begin at 9 a.m. The first 25 runners that register the day of the race will receive a free T-shirt.

The formal dedication of the Rangeland Complex/Coffee Agricultural Pavilion will be at 9 a.m. and the dedication of the Chicoine Center will be at 10:30 a.m.

Those who want to rent the jersey of a CSC player can pick up the jersey from 9:30 – 11:30 a.m., Saturday in the Student Center lobby. Payment for renting the jersey must be in the form of cash or a check made out to “Chadron State College.”

There will be a pre-game tailgate BBQ from 10 a.m. – noon at the Chicoine Center Plaza. Reserved BBQ and/or tickets can be picked up in the lobby of the Student Center from 8 a.m. – noon. The payment for tickets must be in the form of cash or a check. Checks can be made out to “Chadron State College.” At the same time, games will be available in The Pit. At 11:40 a.m., the CSC football players and their parents will be introduced at Elliott Field. The CSC football game against Colorado Mesa University will kick off

at noon. During halftime of the game, the cheer team members and their parents will be introduced. At 3:30 p.m., the Eagle Booster Club will host a post-game reception at The Country Kitchen. The reception is open to any parents, alumni, fans, and/or friends of CSC. At 4 p.m., Saturday, there will be an alumni softball game at the softball fields.

Sunday parents are encouraged to enjoy lunch with their students from 11 a.m. – 1:30 p.m., at the Student Center cafeteria.

Expansion spurs CSC’s future

I

f you have been around campus lately it is likely that you have seen the multitude of construction that has been underway.

There is a new housing structure, a new gym, and a new rangeland facility and arena. Along with the construction, demolition is occurring at West Court to make room for more projects and construction on campus.

That being said, CSC has undergone a tremendous amount of growth in the last 12 months. Not only has the college finished a few projects, but there are more projects in the books.

A proposal statement for a new stadium and track has been approved. This is only the first step, but it is a step in the right direction.

Another project, although not located on campus, is the renovations planned for the city pool. A tax to fund the renovations and expansion of the pool was approved in the November 2014 elections. This construction is not directly related to CSC, but the facilities will be used by the college once they are functioning.

The growth here at CSC represents something greater than community support alone. It represents potential for the college. If CSC were declining, renovations would not be made. Buildings would be left until they decayed and teachers would be slowly laid off. However, the opposite is happening at CSC. Each semester new faculty members are being added, and department sizes are growing.

CSC has potential, and this potential is being recognized and capitalized on.

The new facilities that have been added to campus will undoubtedly contribute to increased interest in CSC for prospective students, and this modern infrastructure will open doors for CSC to increase revenue.

For the third time in history, a Roman Catholic Pope is visiting America.

Pope Francis arrived to Joint Base Andrews at 4 p.m., Tuesday, and was personally greeted by President Barack Obama, Vice President Joe Biden, and their families.

This personal welcome on the president’s behalf was a sign of utmost respect to Francis because presidents rarely greet foreign visitors at Andrews.

However, when Pope Benedict XVI arrived in 2008, President George W. Bush made an exception and received the pope at the airport. President Obama followed suit, and met Francis with open arms.

Not only did the president and vice president greet the pope, but top cardinals and bishops from the U.S. Catholic Church, including the archbishop of Washington, Cardinal Donald Wuerl, and the archbishop of Galveston-Huston, Cardinal Daniel DiNardo were present when Francis landed.

Francis has a vigorous schedule ahead of him during his time in America.

“During my visit I will have the honor of addressing Congress, where

I hope, as a brother of this country, to offer words of encouragement to those called to guide the nation’s political future in fidelity to its founding principles,” Francis said. “I will also travel to Philadelphia for the Eighth World Meeting of Families, to celebrate and support the institutions of marriage and the family at this, a critical moment in the history of our civilization.”

During his time in the United States, Francis will also visit New York City to address the U.N. General Assembly.

Francis has stated that while giving his speech to the members of Congress, he will address the issue of climate change. Considering the progressive and liberal viewpoints that the pope has voiced since he was chosen as the pope in 2013, the address to Congress may spark some thoughtful conversations in

The pope has a Masters of Science in chemistry, so his views about climate change are vetted in science, but laced with an obligation to follow the church and his doctrine on all issues.

As a global religious figure, the pope should distance himself from the realm of politics. He should be a figure that Catholics of all backgrounds can stand behind and look up to.

Francis is proving to be quite the diplomat, his hand in the relationship between the United Stated and Cuba being a prime example. However, it is not his place to form political opinions.

Furthermore, his attempt to sway Congress toward a verdict on the perceived global climate issue is overstepping a bound that may push some Catholic followers away from the unified stance that they should have.

The first amendment separates church and state, and there is good reason for that. Although the pope is not governed by the constitution, he should respect the provisions that our founding fathers have laid out.

When in Rome, do as Rome does, but when in the United States, do as we do; and separate church from state.

Feminism does not equal man-hating Angie Webb Advertising Director Feminism is an extremely important part of today’s political agenda. Yes, I know some of you reading this recoiled at the sight of the word, thinking I’m some man-hating social justice warrior that believes women are the superior gender in every way. But you’re wrong.

Feminism simply means that females deserve rights equal to those that men enjoy. That’s it; there’s nothing more or less to it.

I know some of you are reading this now and thinking, “Why can’t we just call it ‘egalitarianism?’ Isn’t that the same?” It’s not the same thing. Yes, the premise and definition are similar, but taking the contextual “female” out of the word means not acknowledging the unique struggles that women still face today from government rules and regulations, work place discrimination, and harassment.

Perhaps the most important issue that women today still face is access to birth control, which includes access to abortions. A hot button issue in politics right now is the potential government de-funding of Planned Parenthood, a critical resource for women to get breast exams, birth control pills, HIV tests, and, yes, abortions. However, Planned Parenthood does not use federal dollars to fund abortion access, which is only a small percentage of what it provides to

the public and especially underprivileged and poor women.

There are also many attempts and successes to ban abortion access in a large number of states; the recent case where Hobby Lobby won the right to not provide insurance that covers certain forms of birth control due to religious beliefs is another example of a struggle women have to face today. We need feminism to uphold the decision of “Roe v. Wade,” the Supreme Court case that legalized abortions. Feminism in this case prevents abortions by providing free or cheap access to birth control pills, shots, and even Plan B to underprivileged women and families who cannot afford to bring children into the world. Feminism keeps abortions legal, which in turn, decriminalizes women who need the procedure and saves women’s lives by providing a safe medical procedure rather than limiting their options to dangerous, illegal methods as a last resort.

And yes, I know some will argue that these women should just refrain from sex instead of relying on access to birth

Women struggle with “slut shaming,” a form of harassment that shames women for being sexual beings, or too sexual in the eyes of society. This includes women having more than one partner, wearing revealing clothes, or any other behaviors that society deems unacceptable for women but fine for men. We’ve all heard quips about these sexual women being unfit for marriage because of their sexual escapades and complaints about “hook-up culture” and how women these days don’t want to settle down into a relationship, essentially, how chivalry and old-fashioned mindsets are gone. We need feminism so women are no longer shamed and bullied for acting human.

Keep in mind that I am not advocating misandry. I do not agree with what I would call “Tumblr feminism,” where men are treated as inferior and accused of oppressing women with everything they do. I do not hate men. I do think that culturally, there are issues that men face that are unique to them, and there are issues that feminism can cure for men too. However, I do not think that we need to dismiss feminism and feminists by calling them misandrists just because of the label they use. We need to recognize that culturally and in government, there are still issues unique to women that cannot be dismissed. Women still have battles to fight, and feminists will fight these battles until they are won.

Rockies dream turns real Jordyn Hulinsky

Managing Editor In three years of working at the newspaper, I have experienced some amazing things. I started working for the paper the first week I was on campus as a freshman; by the second week of classes, I was named the sports editor. A month into my first semester on campus, the paper shipped me away to Texas to cover a football game. I rode down with the band and sat in the press box at AT&T Stadium, also known as Cowboys Stadium. I was in awe the entire time I was there.

The second semester of my sophomore year, I took on the position of managing editor, after our previous managing editor graduated. Last spring, I traveled to Pueblo, Colorado, to take pictures at the RMAC Super Region 4 Wrestling Tournament, which was a little less exciting compared to AT&T Stadium, but still thrilling, none-the-less.

This weekend, I had the best experience at the paper so far. I was able to travel with Teri Robinson, photo editor, and Preston Goehring, sports editor, to Golden, Colorado. We took pictures at the CSC versus Colorado School of Mines game.

With the mountains in the background, we had an awesome view for the entire game. The staff at Mines was kind and helpful in every way.

Sunday, CSC’s band played the National Anthem at the Colorado Rockies game. Our adviser at the newspaper wanted to send us to the game to cover the band playing at the stadium. He contacted the Rockies and asked if we could get credentials. We were put in touch with Cory Little from the Rockies, who allowed Robinson and me photo credentials to go down on the field. Goehring was allowed credentials on the field as well.

One of my goals in life was to work for the Rockies either taking pictures or reporting and that dream came true this weekend. I wasn’t necessarily working for the Rockies, but I was still shooting pictures of the Rockies from the photo wells with the professionals.

The newspaper is one of the most stressful jobs I’ve ever encountered, but I know that being here, working hard, and committing my time will benefit me in the future. I’ve already been able to do things I never imagined were possible, and I can credit that to this stressful job and to my adviser.

The last time the band went on a trip to an away game was two years ago, when they traveled to Dallas to play at the football team’s game against West Texas A&M at AT&T Stadium.

“I had more time to plan for this trip, we had a chance to pair what was going on Saturday with the Rockies game on Sunday,” Shuler said.

“We were able to support the football team and show the spirit and loyalty to Chadron State College, and show ourselves off and market ourselves as well. We showed thousands of people at Coors Field and are now online, so anyone can see us and possibly look us up. It also gives the alumni an extra level of pride in where they went to school.”

“Getting to perform the National Anthem at the Rockies game was an experience that I will never forget,” Lee said. “Seeing everyone in the crowd stand up, take their hats off, and sing along to it was an incredible feeling that will stick with me forever.”

Lee said that she also played with the band when they traveled to Dallas, but the Rockies game was a better experience.

“Not only did we get to play for a professional baseball team, but we also got to perform a piece of music that is so important to both our country and our people,” Lee said.

Volleyball Standings As of Sept. 21

Reporter This past weekend the Eagles began conference play at the Chicoine Center against the Fort Lewis College Skyhawks.

The Eagles showed a lot of offensive aggressiveness which was evident throughout the whole night. The Eagles offense was led by two players in the first game; the first player being Lelalelei Nomura, senior of Pago Pago, American Samoa, and the second player being Rudy Leasau, junior of Lamesa, California, with 10 kills each.

Defensively, the Eagles had a solid night marking another tie between Chloe Guillen, sophomore of San Antonio, Texas, and Leasau both collecting 14 digs. The Eagles showed a lot of resiliency, and at the end of the night, they swept Fort Lewis, 3-0.

“It was good to win our first home game and to have all that support,” Nomura said. “We should’ve gone 2-0. Those games are done, in the past. Now we need to focus on winning our next one.”

In the second night, the Eagles faced off against the Adams State Grizzlies. Unlike the day before, CSC was unable to string together consecutive sets to win the game.

The first set was a hit-for-hit battle, eventually the Eagles lost 26-24. CSC didn’t hold back on the second set, winning 25-13. However, the Grizzlies would battle back in the third, winning 26-24, and the fourth, 25-13.

On the offensive end of the court, the Eagles were led once again by Leasau in kills. She ended the night with a total of 13 kills on 42 attempts.

Leasau also led the Eagles on defense, with a total of 15 digs in an effort to try and revitalize the Eagles. In the end the Eagles fell short to the Grizzlies losing 3-1, and splitting their home opener.

“I think we have some kinks we still need to work on,” Stephanie Wilson, sophomore of Albuquerque, New Mexico, said. “Our team chemistry as a team is great and I think that will end up helping us later down the road.”

The Eagles are set to face off against Colorado Mesa University and Westminster College next weekend on the road.

“I think we did pretty good, even though we didn’t get the outcome we wanted on Saturday,” Sina Mauga, senior of Ewa Beach, Hawaii, said. “We just need to work on things, learn from it, and come back harder.”

Nunes leads women to 1st place finish Tayler Saunders Reporter Saturday, both the men’s and women’s cross country teams competed in the Woody Greeno/Nebraska Wesleyan University Cross Country Meet in Lincoln, and both teams were successful.

The women finished their 6K race first out of 14 teams with 44 points and four runners in the top eight. Benedictine College of Kansas was second with 74 points followed

by Nebraska Wesleyan with 104 points.

The women’s team was led by Jayme Nunes, senior of Alliance, who finished third with a time of 23:03.8. Some other notable performances were senior Rebecca Volf, of Woof River, who finished fourth with 23:08.2; and the fifth place finisher with a time of 23:11.3, a Chadron native, junior, Nicky Banzhaf. Freshman Alyse Henry, of Rock Springs, Wyoming, finished eighth with a time of 23:30.4.

“I was really proud of our team,” Banzhafsaid. “It really helped that up until the 4K our four leaders were in a close pack constantly calling each other’s names which helps us feel support knowing we have someone there with us.”

Iowa Central Community College runner, Leanne Pompeani, freshman of Canberra, Australia, was the individual winner in the college division with a time of 21:52.2 only 1:11.6 faster than Nunes. The mark was also faster than that of the winner of the university division by 22 seconds.

The men finished the 8K race fifth out of 15 with a score of 159. Leading the Eagles was junior Dylan Stansbury, of Crawford.

Stansbury placed fourth overall and had a time of 25:59. Finishing in 12th for the Eagles was senior Evans Koech, of Nairobi, Kenya, with 26:27.8. Eric Yager, sophomore of Hot Springs, South Dakota, finished 42nd with a time of 27:30.9. Finishing 48th, sophomore of Chadron, Phil Duncan, crossed the line in 27:46.5. Levi Avila, sophomore of Mitchell, finished 53rd, in 27:55.1.

Again an Iowa Central runner took first place. Andrew Ronoh, freshman of Nakuru, Kenya, had a time of 24:51.3 only 38 seconds faster than Stansbury. Second place was taken by Garrett Kenyon, senior of Colorado Springs, Colorado, at Creighton University with a time of 25:10.

The Eagles next meet will be Saturday Oct. 3 at the Chile Pepper invitational in Arkansas.

Pine Ridge turkey Bryson’s hunt spawns Back country comradery

It’s that time of the year again in the Big Red State. Time for hunting, the birds are chirping, the antelope are roaming, and the turkeys are strutting. The turkeys aren’t the only ones looking to strut their stuff. Participants of the Pine Ridge Wild Turkey Hunt will be looking to do so on Oct. 7-8. This marks the sixth year in a row the Nebraska Northwest Development Corporation will host the event. Among the people hosted are business leaders, corporate sponsors, and elected officials to VIP hunts on private land. CSC President Randy Rhine will be one of the hunters participating. In addition, two Chadron State College students will be sponsored by the college to participate in the hunt.

According to Nebraska Northwest Development Center, the turkey hunt is used to share

the natural resources from the Pine Ridge area with people who are less familiar. This enhances the visitor industry with the goal to expose opportunities for business leaders. By inviting members of Chadron State College to participate, it provides a strong connection between the college and surrounding community. The most recent newsletter by the NNDC states that corporate sponsor and hunter’s fees pay for the event so that no regular budget dollars are used for this event.

The first day of Pine Ridge Wild Turkey Hunt will consist of trap shooting in the afternoon. Followed by an opening dinner where participants meet with their team members and guides. The hunt takes place early on day two after breakfast. That afternoon hunters will rejoin at the Museum of the Fur Trade to reflect

on the days hunting experiences. That night a banquet will be at Chadron State Park. Prizes will be awarded for the longest beard and special recognition will be given for unique events that occurred on the hunt.

I would encourage anyone who is interested to get in the outdoors and pick up a turkey permit while you are at it. Hunting is an extremely rewarding process that enables us to reflect on our accomplishments. Permits can be purchased through the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission website. State law requires turkey hunters to have a turkey permit and habitat stamp. A fall permit is valid for two turkeys of either sex. According to a 2014 survey done by Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, a majority of the people who have hunted turkeys were satisfied with the quality of their hunt.

After a solid start to its season, the Chadron State College Rodeo team showed improvement at the Dawes County Fairgrounds this past weekend for the CSC home rodeo; with the men’s team taking second and the women’s team plac-

ing third.

The men placed second behind Eastern Wyoming College who won the men’s division with 595 points while the University of Wyoming finished third with 470. The CSC men lead the Central Rocky Mountain Region with 940 total points.

The women’s team is now fifth in the regional standings.

Some top competitors for the cowboys included Clayton Van

Aken, graduate student of Laramie, Wyoming, who placed first in calf roping with times of 10.2 seconds and 9.9; Nate McFadden, senior of Dunning, who placed second in bareback; Justin Kissack, junior of Gillette, Wyoming, who placed third in bareback; and Dakota Rice, freshman of Kellogg, Idaho, placed second in bull riding. Clint Nelson, freshman of Philip, South Dakota, placed sixth in steer wrestling with times of 8.0 and 6.7 also.

For the women’s team, Shelby Winchell, graduate student of Scottsbluff, placed second in goat tying with times of 7.6 and 6.9, only missing the top spot by a tenth of a second. Fifth place in goat tying went to Kelsey Knust, junior of Verdigre, with a times of 7.9 and 8.0.

Charmayne Strong, sophomore of Rushville, placed sixth in goat tying with runs of 8.0 and 8.7.

All-around winners were both from Gillette College.

“I’m very proud of the team as a whole this weekend,” Head Coach Dustin Luper said. He also stated that he was impressed with the team’s efforts, as they had to help work the rodeo, and their success.

Luper also said that it’s going to be nice for the team to relax and get down to business next weekend in Sheridan, Wyoming, and kick some butt.

CSC’s next competition will be this weekend at Sheridan College.

CSC traveled to Golden, Colorado, last weekend to open up RMAC play against the Colorado School of Mines Orediggers. Prior to the game, Mines was ranked No. 15 in the nation. The Eagles battled hard but were unable to win the conference opener, losing 28-20.

The Orediggers, one of the best teams in the nation, were averaging over 52 points per game this season and only allowing 17.5. The Eagles were averaging 26.5 points per game while allowing 24.

The game was close until the fourth quarter, where CSM was able to fine the endzone three times, pushing the score to 28-3. Although the Eagles never gave up, the hole they dug themselves into proved to be too much.

Defensively, Ryan Wood, junior of Stockton, California and senior captain Dylan Furrier, of Tucson,

Arizona, led the team in tackles with 11 each. However the defensive highlight came from Cole Montgomery, senior captain of Casper, Wyoming, who blocked a punt, recovered the ball, and returned it for a touchdown late in the fourth quarter to make it a one possession game for the Eagles.

“I think everyone knew that we needed a big play to turn things around we didn’t have much momentum at that point and the call was designed for multiple people to block it,” Montgomery said. “We have a great special teams scheme all around. Everyone did exactly what they were supposed to do and it allowed me to come free, and I was just thinking don’t close my eyes, and when I blocked it, I don’t think I had anything else going through my mind other than finding the ball and it was in front of me, and I picked it up and ran it into the end zone.”

Derek Jackson, sophomore of Pueblo West, Colorado, played another outstanding game, racking

up 184 yards, his longest run being a 42-yarder on the opening drive.

Jackson had another long run that was called back due to a penalty.

Redshirt freshman Kevin Coy, of Davenport, Florida, established his running game as well, gaining 94 yards and a touchdown for the Eagles. Danny O’Boyle, senior of Gering, had a team high seven catches and 42 yards. TD Stein, redshirt freshman of Chadron, completed 17 of 31 passes, for 107 yards and four interceptions, the final one coming deep in the fourth quarter.

The Eagles face Colorado Mesa University in their home opener, noon, Saturday.

“It is more important now than ever (to win) because we know we have to win the rest of our games if we want to make the post season which is always an expectation for us as a program,” Montgomery said.

“They (CMU) are leading the conference in rushing and they have a nation leading punt returner so it’s a challenge we are excited for.”

On Monday, the Resident Life Association hosted an event called Organizing Your Life in the breezeway. The event was centered around how students should set up their belongings. It also provided some tips and hacks to help students become more organized.

The event started at 7 p.m. and lasted for 20 minutes. Eleven people stayed for the whole event, and there were 10 students who came and left during the event.

Mariah Nelson, resident director of Andrew Hall, was the speaker of the event. She talked about how students organize their school supplies with examples such as how to keep their backpack and notes organized.

She also stated that time management is critical, and students need to keep track of what they do everyday. She showed the students some tricks to help keep their desks neat. For example, using a threedrawer unit to keep school supplies, and a food bin to stack up your snacks. She also suggested some apps that students could

use to help keep their homework organized and time managed.

At the end of the event, a raffle was held giving away prizes that related to the topics which were talked during the event. The prizes included totes, drawers, notebooks, calender, sticky notes and others. Students learned multiple skills from the event.

Chandler Nelson, freshman of Mitchell, who attended the event, said, “This event helped me a lot. I definitely learn from this.

I need to clean my calender and put some of these tips to use”.

UW professor’s lecture features Sandhills women Shae Brennan Reporter

The Mari Sandoz Heritage Society sponsored guest speaker Renee Laegreid, professor of history of the American West at the University of Wyoming, Laramie, last Thursday in the Student Center for the Pilster Great Plains Lecture Series.

Laegreid’s lecture, titled “These Were the Sandhills Women: Stories, Images, and Mari Sandoz” focused on the women of the Sandhills during the 19 and mid 20th centuries and how they often did not fit the stereotypes that many people believed of them, but were still often viewed as unimportant and “seldom the feature of pioneer stories.”

Themes from Mari Sandoz’s books “Old Jules,” “Miss Morissa,” and “Slogum House” were all used

by Laegreid to portray the “complex, wide-ranging, and sometimes shockingly unexpected experiences of 19th century Plains women.”

The themes of these books revolved around plains women being either, “good, sad, or bad.” The “good” woman was “self-sacrificing, pious, domestic, and submissive.” The “sad” woman was “reluctant, unhappy, and suicidal.” The “bad” woman was “scandalous, a failure, manly, and promiscuous.”

Laegreid believes that Sandoz challenges stereotypes of women during this period through her stories, and made them important and multi-dimensional characters so the reader achieves a greater understanding of what it was really like to be a pioneer woman in the Sandhills.

The Mari Sandoz Heritage Society works to build an appreciation of Mari Sandoz’s body of work by bringing people together for discussions of her works and the issues that arise in them.

In addition to the three major annual events, the society works to preserve the literary works and legacy of this distinguished historian, Mari Sandoz.

Book leads readers to think before they act DeAndra Miller Contributor

A story containing strong emotion and taboo topics, “Forgive Me, Leonard Peacock,� by Matthew Quick, chronicles a teenage boy who sets out to kill himself and another boy, Asher Beal.

Covering the controversial topic of school shootings, bullying, sexual assault, and internal conflict, this book delivers a story that you will not soon forget. Considering the fact that you know this boy, Leonard, is about to go kill someone and commit suicide, you should hate him, or even dislike him but after hearing his story you can do neither. His sincerity, his truth, his gifts for four very important people to him, and his methodical steps taken

throughout this novel show you that there is much more to this boy and this story than what meets the eye. It brings light to what we can all do to help prevent tragedies like this in real life, it brings light to all those who feel the way Leonard has and never spoke up, it brings light to those who had those same thoughts and never acted.

This book does not glorify what Leonard plans for but it lends understanding to a side that we never get to see. In conflicts such as these, the shooter is never portrayed as a victim, but bullying is not a victimless crime. If you are looking for a book that will shock you, shake you, make you consider your own actions, and seek to make a change, consider this; consider remembering and forgiving Leonard Peacock.

CSC showcases works by two artists Jessica Thiele Reporter

A Sam Cikauskas exhibition is on display in Memorial Hall’s main gallery from Monday through Oct. 9.

Cikauskas received his Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) from Northern Illinois University in 2012. He is a graduate student and part-time instructor in printmaking at the University of Colorado at Boulder. He has exhibited nationally and internationally, and his work is held in numerous permanent collections located in Limerick, Ireland; Gippsland, Australia; and in The United Arab Emirates. Recently he has been volunteering at community gardens and supporting local farmers in Boulder, Colorado. Cikauskas’s works include lithographs, woodcuts, etching, and aluminum and acrylic.

The focus of this particular show is to convince people to keep a closer eye on what they consume.

“I hope to entice the viewer with the captivating line work of my relief prints, ultimately persuading them to eat healthier foods,” Cikauskas wrote in his statement for the show.

One piece, titled “Thick and Rich,” portrays a bottle of Mrs. Butterworth’s syrup with the label, “Mrs. High Fructose Corn Syrup.” Another lithograph called, “Monsantola” features a Coca-Cola advertisement with the words, “Enjoy

High Fructose Corn Syrup” encircling the coke bottle.

As observers move around the display, however, the works turn from light-hearted to dark. The intensity of the browns, reds, and blues Cikauskas uses illustrates the intensity of the scenes portrayed. In “Fowl Play,” a slaughterhouse is depicted with chickens being sucked into a vacuum. In another piece, cattle hang from chains hooked into the ceiling with a sign over the door leading outside to freedom reading “Exist” instead of “Exit.”

Yet another woodcut, “Anima,” portrays a pig on a conveyor belt with each portion of its body labeled with the particular meat that comes from each part of the pig. Question marks appear repeatedly in Cikauskas’s work, leaving the observer to wonder if the artist has a few probing doubts in his life he is trying to answer through his ominous artwork.

Works by Chris Blume are on display in Memorial Hall’s room 239 gallery from Monday through Oct. 9.

Originally from the western suburbs of Chicago, Blume is now located in Boulder, Colorado, where he is a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) candidate in printmaking at the University of Colorado at Boulder. He has taken on the role of student, artist, printer, and educator in recent years with a passion for creativity and Midwest work ethic. His works can be seen in private collections, nationally, and internationally. Blume

uses several methods including lithography, drawing, and Intaglio. The show on display in Memorial offers viewers a glimpse into the future, or at least, the future as envisioned

by Blume.

“The imagery in my recent project includes steam-powered time traveling viewing devices, recovered shields from battles once to be fought, and those who will empower themselves over the population,” Blume said in his show statement.

Art goers may feel a sense of foreboding of what is to come when viewing images such as “Premonition,” a lithograph portraying a small porthole looking at a cross consumed in smoke and surrounded by skulls and bones.

“American History, Collages of War” encompasses a series of pieces with war-headlined newspapers, the Twin Towers, and the Virgin Mary looking to Heaven in prayer. Other works, like “Aesthetics of Balance, I and II,” bring a sense of nostalgia in the laid-back oranges, grays, and browns depicted in the oil, acrylic, charcoal, graphite, and wood.

“The reoccurring subject matter of religion, technology, and nature parallels the issues we face today. I use my own social structures, wares, and technology as a means of criticizing the human condition and the possible dystopian result of the world,” Blume said.

Ellis lectures on the benefits of ketosis Jay Feltson Reporter

The first installment of the Graves lecture series kicked off 7 p.m., Tuesday in room 111 in the library.

This first lecture was given by Josh Ellis, assistant professor in the Family and Consumer Sciences department, and the title of his presentation was “Nutritional Ketosis is Phat.” The lecture focused mainly on giving good advice on how to live a healthier life and ways to refine our diets so we can get more out of them.

He said during the lecture that the reason he is doing these type of lectures is because “This is the first generation of American kids expected to live shorter than their parents.”

With that said however, the presentation was tailored toward older people, which was evident because there was an older crowd featuring adults who didn’t attend CSC but lived either in Chadron or close to it.

Ellis started off by talking about the history of our ide-

als of what a healthy and unhealthy diet are. He spoke about the origins of saturated fats and how we came to a conclusion that they are unhealthy for us to have.

He also spoke about John Yudkin and how, in 1972, he said that sugar was the main cause to all of the health issues that we have.

Then he paralleled that statement with interesting facts about how the average American consumes close to 152 pounds of sugar annually, and close to 30 million of the population has Photo by Sara Tweet type 2 diabetes.

He also gave his views on the nutrition guidelines which has transformed from the food pyramid model to

My Plate. He said that doesn’t believe in those, because only about 20 percent of the population follows these recommendations.

In the later parts of the lecture he started offering his opinion on how to make diets work so we get more out of them. He then spoke about Nutritional Ketosis; which is the process of accelerating production of the ketones through the restriction of dietary carbohydrates, which is a high fat and low carb diet.

One surprising statement that he made was that physical activity is better for lowering insulin levels and helping cognitive thinking. Exercise alone won’t assist with weight loss, which is a common misconception today.

One thing he reiterated during this lecture was the more natural foods we eat the healthier we are, and to try and stay away from processed foods as much as possible.

The upcoming lecture will be Oct. 13; and the speaker will be Steve Coughlin, who will be performing a poetry reading featuring many different poems from his book. All lectures are free and open to the public.

On Saturday, alumni of Chadron State College gathered in Chadron to reminisce and tour the new rangeland facility on the outskirts of campus.

Nineteen people were present for the tour including alumni and their spouses. The group listened intently as Connie Rasmussen, Chadron State Foundation executive director, and Karen Pope, Chadron State Foundation director of alumni and development, described the process by which the rangeland facility was fundraised and built.

According to facts given during the tour, the new facility was funded completely with private money. Additionally, Dale Grant, finance and administration project coordinator, told the alumni how he and the architects

that partnered with CSC on the project designed the facility to maximize the effectiveness of the budgeted square footage. This included building two separate buildings; one for the arena and one for the classrooms/labs.

After the tour, the alumni and their spouses went out of town to spend the afternoon together, but came back to Chadron for a social Saturday evening.

They reconvened at the fairgrounds where they had the chance to look at old yearbooks and talk with the rodeo team members, Coach Dustin Luper, and Coaching Assistant Wyatt Clark.

There were 27 attendees at the social, not including the rodeo team members or rodeo coaches.

Why do you like music?

“I like music because it is a release from a bunch of stress that I get from other classes.

It’s a good opportunity to meet a lot of people and it’s a lot of fun!”

Why do you think the other people in your choir like music?

“I think it’s similar situations.

There are a lot of people that are in it for class requirements, but there is a lot of people who aren’t

even music majors who are in it. So, probably the same thing.

Mine is a scholarship opportunity too, so that’s another reason!”
