A blown arrester caused a small fire on one of the transformers on the southwest side of campus, Terry Johnson, Nebraska Public Power District employee, said Monday. At about 10:30 a.m., lights in Old Admin started to flicker, shut down, and came back on. Lights in other buildings around campus were showing similar malfunctions. By 10:45 a.m., emergency personnel arrived on the scene. Two police cars blocked off Chadron Ave. and 12th St. so cars could not drive past the transformer. Onlookers were told to stand far back from the transformer in case the fire spread or caused an explosion. Lights were not the only items affected by the blown arrester, some campus phones, Internet access, and elevators were out of service. The cafeteria and grille were also closed because staff was unable to keep food warm enough to serve. Both food areas were closed for about two hours before re-opening to the students. NPPD personnel re-routed the power, and at 12:30 p.m., power was restored to the campus, Mark Becker, NPPD spokesperson said Mon-
