Senate allocates $750 to help celebrate Constitution Day Jordyn Hulinsky Managing Editor

Senate allocated $750 Monday to Laure Sinn for constitution day, which is scheduled for Sept. 17. The school is required to celebrate constitution day or is in jeopardy of losing federal funding.

Sinn said she planned on using the $750 to purchase a $620 iPad Air for a prize and also to pay for red, white, and blue cookies.

Nathaniel Jones, vice president of finance, said prior to the allocation, Senate’s account was at $131,442.61. He reminded senators that the number is a projected number and he will be meeting with Dale Grant, vice president of administration and finance, to get a more accurate number.

Chief Justice Coy Clark said that the hall senators’ petitions deadline has passed so elections will be via survey monkey. Voting will open at noon, Wednesday, and will close at noon, Sept. 12.

A word from the Student Senate President This week in Senate Chris Green asked the representatives to help co-fund Paul Wesselmann on Nov. 12 to come and speak to campus. There will be an online vote

Kinbacher said this is his third year at CSC and his 10th year teaching. He is a history professor.

Hurley passed around papers for senators to sign up for different committees. The committees included the presidential committee, AFB committee, AFB review committee, campus beautification committee, and the budget committee.

CSC President Randy Rhine asked senators to sit on five faculty committees, Hurley said. The committees he wants senators to be a part of include campus facilities, safety and ADA compliance committee, commencement committee, diversity committee, and homecoming committee.

AFB is a standing committee that reviews budgets of clubs then presents to Senate recommendations for club allocations in the spring semester.

The AFB review committee reviews the bylaws and presents any recommendations of changes to Senate. The AFB review committee is established every two years, in conjunction with AFB bylaws.

The campus beautification committee is to find jobs on campus to help make CSC’s campus beautiful. Hurley said

for the amount allocated, so that the representatives have a chance to discuss this issue with their constituents. All of the dorm representatives’ petitions are in and elections will be held next week. Make sure you check your email (and possibly the junk folder) to be able to vote for your dorm’s representative for Senate. If you did not get the chance to apply to be a dorm representative, you still have a chance to join Senate. If you go to our page on the CSC website you can find petitions for appointment at http:// www.csc.edu/studentsenate/applications.csc. You can also receive a petition for appointment during my office hours from 3 - 5 p.m., Monday – Friday. My door is always

Director of Student Affairs Chris Green said that at the NPAC sign-ups for intermural sports have started. Sand volleyball, flag football, and an NFL weekly pick‘em are available at this time. He said group fitness classes will also be available again this semester.

Green asked for an allocation of $2,750 to help with the cost of bringing in Paul Wesselmann, a speaker being brought in to give a talk on leadership. Green said the total cost for bringing in Wesselmann will be about $5,500 so he is asking Senate to cover half the cost. Because there is no Senate meeting next week due to Labor Day, Hurley said there will be an online vote for senators next week.

CAB announces homecoming activities Justine Stone News Editor

Last year, the Campus Activities Board was allocated $148,356.90 for the 2015-2016 school year after the clubs submitted their budget packets. Clubs have the opportunity to request more money for new events at future CAB meetings. After expenditures so far, the budget for the remainder of this school year is $142,037.91. Clubs are expected to be active on campus with the money that is in their budgets. During last week’s Student Senate meeting, the purchase of an inflatable movie screen that will be used for various club activities was approved. Any club has the opportunity to request for the use of the screen for an event during CAB meetings.

There will be a club fair from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m., today in the Student Center Ballrrom to help new students discover what clubs and activities they may be interested in. All clubs on campus agreed to participate in the fair in their budget packets so they are required to attend or put up a display at the fair.

There will be a meeting for all club advisers at 11 a.m., Sept. 22 in the Student Center to help prepare them for events and activities throughout the school year.

The club packets were returned to the CAB representatives so they could make sure they were updated with the correct advisers, representatives, and members. These packets are due back to the CAB executive board by Sept. 22. Clubs were handed back packets with sticky notes of what was missing from their packets. If packets are not returned on time, clubs funding will be frozen until next semester.

If clubs need supplies for their events, they can meet CAB Adviser Chris Green from 10 – 11 a.m., every Thursday at Walmart. If this time does not work the clubs can contact Green to schedule another time to meet.

Column Feeling like there is something missing in your life but not really sure what it is? One way to add fulfillment in your life is to join a club

Green talked about the 2015 homecoming events.

The theme for this year is “Going on a Bear Hunt.” Nominations for homecoming royalty will be due Sept. 28 and the royalty photos will be taken on Sept. 30. Voting on royalty will open on Thursday, Oct. 1 and close Monday, Oct. 5.

Clubs can pick up bed sheets on Oct. 2, and they are due Oct. 5.

There will be a bonfire and spirit rally on Monday, Oct. 5.

The Pit will be hosting a theme dance on Thursday, Oct. 8.

There are no plans for Friday, Oct. 9 yet, but the committee is thinking it will be a school spirit day, Green said. They are looking for ideas for that day.

Saturday, Oct. 10’s events include the Eagle 5K run, parade, football game, and formal dance.

The homecoming committee is looking for daily themes for Tuesday and Wednesday of homecoming.

Ideas can be brought to CAB. Green said they are hoping to have laser tag on either Tuesday or Wednesday but are still figuring out the details, and also one of the days will be coronation, bed sheet winners, and the lighting of C-Hill, but those details are not arranged yet either.

The Activity Fee Board is a standing committee that will go through budget packets and allocate money to clubs. They are looking for three CAB members to join the committee this year.

The schedule for Free Movie and Free Bowling Nights will be released at the next CAB meeting.

Maria Evtodieva, the vice chair of relations, will be working with the clubs to promote their events and activities on social media.

CAB is looking for feedback from students on the Week of Welcome. If you have any suggestions for improvement or new ideas, email one of the members of the CAB executive board.

The club fair is an opportunity for clubs to attract new members to their clubs. Students are encouraged to attend the club fair to find clubs that fit their interests.

Lecher was organizer of NSO Last week in The Eagle, we mistakenly published that Justy Bullington was in charge of New Student Orientation.

We should have reported Danielle Lecher was the coordinator and director of New Student Orientation, Bullington said.

Bullington assisted with the Eagle Leaders and organized the pep rally and some of the communications.

The mistake was pointed out to us by Bullington.

On August 14, 2015 Southern Cultural Foundation filed an application with the Federal Communications Commission seeking a construction permit for a new FM Booster station to serve Chadron, Nebraska. The station will operate on 88.7 megahertz with an effective radiated power of 8 watts from an antenna 12 meters above ground level located at 42°-49’-47” North Latitude, 102°-59’55” West Longitude. It will rebroadcast the programming of KVKR-FM 88.7 in Pine Ridge, South Dakota.

New law gives minors amnesty

D

rinking alcohol is an activity that college students have been participating in for decades. However, since the minimum legal drinking age was changed from 18 to 21 in Nebraska on January 1, 1985, drinking is illegal for many college students. Although it is illegal, the possible legal repercussions do not stop some minors from drinking.

Alcohol consumption comes with risks much more lasting than those that can come from law enforcement. It can lead to injury and ultimately death, if it is not consumed with discretion.

One instance of this tragedy occurred at the University of Nebraska- Lincoln last fall when Clayton Real, freshman of Grafton, died of acute alcohol poisoning at his fraternity after an off-campus party.

According to the Lincoln Journal Star, a law encouraging underage drinkers to call for medical help if they or a friend is suffering from alcohol poisoning was put into effect Sunday.

The law, LB439, is known as the Good Samaritan law. It gives minors a limited amount of legal immunity if they call for medical assistance, and was put into effect a year after the incident at UNL. However, it is important to note that the amnesty offered by the law is limited. It does not provide immunity for acts of sexual violence, threats, assaults, the use of false identification, procuring for minors, or harassment and hazing. The law also does not allow others to piggyback onto the call to avoid getting in trouble.

In order to fall under the protections of the law, the person must remain on the scene until medical assistance has arrived, and they must cooperate with the medical personal and any law enforcement personnel.

There are currently 21 states that have similar laws.

This law is a good initiative to save lives because it is a fact that underage students will consume alcohol regardless, but this law can potentially save lives of students that may not have otherwise been given the medical attention that they needed.

We urge you to take full advantage of the protections that this law offers minors on this campus and in the surrounding area. If you are in a situation where you think that somebody would benefit from medical assistance, there is now nothing that should discourage you from calling for help and potentially saving somebody’s life.

Rousey fights to set good example Janelle Kesterson Opinion Editor

There is no denying that the name Ronda Rousey is one that carries a significant amount of clout in the Ultimate Fighting Championship ring. The American mixed martial artist and judoka has made a quick rise in the past few years.

Rousey is a muscular, five foot seven inch, 135-pound ball of fury when she is in the ring, but her personality in and outside of the ring is nothing short of expressive. Before a fight she will scowl at her opponent with a mean penetrating glare, but outside of fighting you can see her smiling so hard that her squinting eyes almost disappear. And although she has the aura of a hardened ‘tough girl’ she will be the first to admit that she cries, a lot.

However, none of Rousey’s varying facial expressions include physical blemishes, even after fights.

“Somebody told me once that it’s the pretty fighters you have to watch

out for. If someone’s all gnarled and mangled up, obviously they’ve been getting hit a lot,” Rousey said in an interview with The New Yorker.

However, life wasn’t always all smiles for the renowned mixed martial artist. According to an article in the Rolling Stone, at age 16, Rousey was ranked as the number one judo fighter in America. She lived in Wakefield, Massachusetts, to train for the Olympics, but dropped out of high school and earned her GED as she traveled frequently to fulfill life as a full-time judoka.

Rousey has admitted publicly that these were not happy times in her life and she struggled with personal

issues. She had a naturally thick and muscular body and she became bulimic in a desperate struggle to qualify for the 63 kilogram weight class (139-pounds).

In the same article with The New Yorker, Rousey also said, “Whenever people talk about how cocky and arrogant I am, it blows me away, because I worked so hard to develop self-confidence.”

Rousey has come a long way since her bronze medal at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing and the funk she was in previous to earning the medal. Recently she was photographed for Maxim and she arrived to the photo shoot 16 pounds over her fighting weight because she thinks that her body looks healthier at the heavier weight than at her fighting weight and didn’t want to glamorize her body when it looked unhealthy.

Rousey has embraced the fact that she has a muscular body, and has overcome her self-esteem issues.

FIGHT According to Fox 8 Cleveland, Rousey has become an advocate for body image, and has donated money to help girls overcome eating disorders.

Fighting and Rousey’s desire to be an inspiration to other female athletes was one of the reasons that she was able to end her bulimia, and she credits the way that UFC fighting made her feel both strong and happy as the light at the end of her dark tunnel. Rousey admits that she has always had body confidence issues, but the key was learning to embrace her body instead of hating it.

This is an important phrase that every girl can take to heart. To my knowledge, there is not a single woman out there that has not stood in front of the mirror naked, and criticized her body in some way, shape or form. I am no exception.

However, each and every body was

created the way it was for a specific reason, and every body is unique.

The problem with the media today is that they try to peg skinny models and actresses as being perfect, and to be frank, that is unfair.

College is the perfect place for women to come to terms with their bodies because it is a time when they change A LOT. Trust me when I say this, because I have experienced it first hand.

I went home this summer and found my senior prom dress hanging in my closet. Out of curiosity, I pulled it out of the bag and tried it on to see if it would still fit. To my dismay, I had a hard time pulling the single shoulder strap on, and when I tried to zip it, I got the zipper pulled only two inches before it refused to budge. TWO INCHES…of a nine or 10 inch zipper. I felt pathetic.

However, I had no option but to

become comfortable with the fact that my body had in fact changed, and there was no going back. I know that I am not the only one who has experienced stark changes in physique, but I have only one piece of advice to offer: Be comfortable in the skin you are in.

People around you can tell when you have confidence in your body, and it will get you further in life when you come to terms with your appearances and work on the inside.

Not only that, but put your appearances aside and see what you can do for people around you instead of focusing on your insecurities.

Ronda Rousey’s mother gave her a piece of advice that emulates the message that body positivity sends.

“It’s not your purpose in life to be happy, it’s your purpose in life to leave the world better than how you found it.”

CSC’s all-time leading passer, Jonn McLain, Casey, who missed last year because of an

injury, will add a lot of experience and talent to the Eagles’ secondary.

“We’ve had good practices in camp,” Furrier said. “We have the ability to be among the best defenses in the conference. Our defensive line has been playing outstanding, which helps the inside linebackers play better.

“The secondary is led by two experienced seniors in Montgomery and Casey. The leadership that those guys bring to their position, and the defense as a whole, really makes us a solid group from front to back,“ Furrier said.

As for the rest of the roster, several underclassmen will be asked to step up and make plays for the Eagles. Redshirt freshman, Jake Geil, of Casper, Wyoming, will be the probable starter at center, replacing four year starter Sam Parker.

“As a team, our goal is to go the playoffs and beat Pueblo,” Paul said.

The Eagles picked five seniors — Furrier, O’Boyle, Vinich, Montgomery, and Casey — as captains for the 2015 season.

Furrier and Casey served as captains last year.

“We are all very excited to get this season started,” Furrier said. “We have really high goals for this season.”

Eagles look to recover after tough season Preston Goehring Sports Editor After a tough season, Chadron State’s volleyball program will look to be more competitive this year, and move up in the RMAC standings. The Eagles were tabbed to finish 14th in the RMAC, while Colorado School of Mines is predicted to win the conference. Colorado Mesa, who won the RMAC last season, was picked to finish third.

Last season, the Eagles finished 3-24 with two conference wins.

Four players are returning for another season for the Eagles: middle hitter Alia Brennan, junior of Chadron; Lelalelei Nomura, senior outside hitter of Pago Pago, American Samoa; outside hitter Alexis Farris, sophomore of Blair; and senior setter Justine Ackie, of Phoenix.

Nomura recorded 212 kills last season, second to only Erika Roybal. She also put up 55 blocks and 100 digs.

“Every single day we compete,” Nomura said. “We compete in practice, in the weight room, and for our positions.

Our coaches do a great job at giving us reps on the court and making sure we

get mental reps as well. Ninety percent of volleyball is mental. One mental error like not calling for the ball or not remembering where you’re supposed to be can change the whole game. Being mentally prepared is just as important as being physically fit.”

Brennan, CSC’s blocking leader for the last two seasons will add a lot of talent and balance to the court. She tallied 131 kills and 11 solo blocks.

“I’m looking forward to seeing our program turn the corner,” Brennan said.

“We want to end up in the top eight of our conference and compete well in the RMAC tournament. We definitely have the athletes and the talent to do so.”

“We have high expectations,” Nomura said. “Our main goal is to get to the conference tournament.”

With its recent recognition as an official sport by the International Olympic Committee, Ultimate Frisbee has been gaining popularity across the United States and the world.

According to BBC.com, on Aug. 2, the International Olympic Committee officially recognized Ultimate Frisbee. This means that Ultimate is eligible for IOC funding and will be on the list of other sports competing for the inclusion of future Olympics, according to Time.com.

Ultimate Frisbee, which originated in the United States in the 1960s, is played in 58 countries around the world.

Even at the World Championships level, Ultimate Frisbee is a self-refereed, non-contact sport, according to the World Flying Disc Federation.

The game is played with two teams of seven on a field that is the same length as a football field but is not as wide, with two end zones at the end of the field.

Players score by catching the disc in the end zone.

“Spirit of the Game” is used to referee the game. With the institution of Spirit of the Game, “Ultimate players are free to demonstrate the most honorable and the most joyous sides of human nature in sports,” the USA Ultimate website states.

To start a game of Frisbee, players line up on opposite end zones and with a loud yell of “ULTIMATE!” one team then throws off. The other team has to stay in its end zone until the disc is thrown. After every goal, the play stops, the non-scoring team walks to the opposite end zone and the team that scored will throw off. The first team to 15 wins or when the 90 minutes are up the game ends. This rule can change depending on the level of play.

The person with the Frisbee, the thrower, is not allowed to run with the Frisbee. Once the Frisbee is caught, the thrower must stop as quickly as possible, but the thrower can pivot on one foot. The person with the Frisbee has 10 seconds to get rid of the Frisbee.

The defense can take control of the Frisbee via multiple different modes of turnovers. If the offensive team fails to catch the Frisbee, if the Frisbee is thrown out of bounds, if it’s intercepted, or if it’s caught by the opposing team, the defense takes control of the Frisbee and becomes the offensive team. The play continues wherever the disc is stopped.

is fair play. When the Frisbee lands out of bounds, the play continues where it left the field.

With the game being self-refereed, the players call their own fouls. Fouls include having contact that is dangerous or affects the play. If someone calls a foul, the play finishes and then the foul is discussed. If the opposing team agrees, the Frisbee is turned over; if the opposing team disagrees, the play is redone.

Players can substitute as many players as they want after every goal, but can only substitute during play if there is an injury time-out.

At CSC, students gather every-so-often to play pick up games of Ultimate Frisbee. The games are less formal and don’t follow the official rules, but anywhere from 10-30 students meet either on Elliott Field or the practice field to play. Teams are picked and divided. Each team lines up on the two end zones and one team “throws off ” to the other team. Players pass the Frisbee down the field in an attempt to score a goal by catching the Frisbee in the opposite end zone. After every point, the non-scoring team “walks.” Meaning they head down to the opposite end, so the teams switch end zones after every goal. CSC students can get involved in pick-up games of Ultimate Frisbee by joining the Facebook group, “Ultimate Frisbee in Chad Town!” for updates on playing times and locations.

According to a press release from CSC Sports Information, Dave Collins will be the new play-byplay announcer for Eagle athletics.

Collins, the former news and sports director at KSID Radio in Sidney, has over 10 years experience. He has done playby-play for more than 900 events.

Collins will replace the well-known John Axtell as “The Voice of DAVE COLLINS the Eagles.”

Cross Country runs with positive outlook William McLaughlin Reporter Both the men’s and women’s cross country teams are tabbed to finish in the top 10 this season, according to a press release from CSC Sports Information.

The RMAC released their preseason cross country poll Tuesday, predicting the women to finish ninth in the Cross Country Coaches Poll, while the men are predicted to finish 10th in the same Coaches Poll. Both teams are expected to improve from a season ago, Head Coach Brian Medigovich said.

“I think we are going to have a good year and I can see a lot of runners having career bests by season’s end, while improving as a team,” Medigovich said.

The men, who finished ninth in the conference in 2014, will have plenty of depth with 16 runners, with

seniors Alejandro Garcia, of Pine Bluffs, Wyoming, and Evans Koech, of Nairobi, Kenya, leading the way.

Garcia stood out as a transfer from Gillette College.

He placed 26th at the RMAC meet, which was the best on the team.

Koech also showed signs of improvement, finishing 27th at the Regional meet.

The women are in a similar position with 11 runners. They are guided by seniors Jayme Nunes, of Alliance, and Rebecca Volf, of Wood River, who help lead the women to an 11th place finish in the conference in 2014.

Nicky Banzhaf, junior of Chadron, will return after she finished second among Eagles at the Regional meet, in 63rd place.

The Eagles will travel to Rapid City, South Dakota, for their opening meet hosted by South Dakota School of Mines, Friday.

Former CSC athlete goes pro Jordyn Hulinsky Managing Editor From Serbia to the United States and now onto Spain, Leana Tajkov, former CSC basketball player, has traveled far from home to follow her basketball passion. Tajkov, native of Serbia, traveled to the United States to play college ball, including one year at CSC, and is now on to her next adventure: Spain.

After signing a contract this summer, Tajkov will travel to Avilés, Spain, today to play for the ASAC Comunicaciones Adba Aviles women’s basketball team.

The May 2014 communication arts graduate of CSC played 26 games for CSC. She averaged 2.3 points per game and 2.2 rebounds per game.

She totaled 59 points, 57 rebounds, seven steals, and eight blocks in her one year as an Eagle.

Tajkov has yet to meet her new teammates but they have introduced themselves via a group message. She said a few of them used English, but a couple used Spanish. Tajkov is not

fluent in Spanish. She said she can understand some, but she is “super pumped to work on it and hopefully become somewhat fluent by the end of the season.”

The assistant coach, Tajkov said, has been helpful in answering any questions she has. She also said, “The girls seem cool. I will play with a girl from Croatia as well.” She commented that Serbia and Croatia used to be a part of the former Yugoslavia.

In warmups, Tajkov says she plans to continue her usual pregame rituals of listening to music and taking selfies. She said she also always tries to make the last basket before leaving the floor from warmups.

“I feel like if I’m the last one on the floor making a basket, we will win,” she said.

Tajkov is also hoping she will be able to wear her lucky Minion socks with her new team.

“I am beyond thankful for the opportunity to play the game I love and travel the world.”

The team is scheduled to play its first game on Oct. 3.

Did you know that caffeine offers a number of health benefits – but only if you limit the amount you consume to between 160400 mg a day? Once you exceed that number your body reacts by releasing a stress hormone called cortisol. So often we get caught up in the go, go, go of everyday life and forget the balance that our bodies require.

We live in an all or nothing society, and it can be very dangerous to think in terms of absolutes. Rather, it is better to think in terms of balance. Applying the concept of balance to healthy living can be very productive.

Fitness provides us with an excellent example of why balance must be achieved for

healthy living. When you perform strength exercises, your muscles tear, when they heal you gain muscle mass. This is why a professional fitness trainer might designate particular days for strength training different muscle groups. It is through the healing process that occurs on your rest day that your body repairs those tears and you build muscles.

Achieving your ideal fitness level isn’t possible without a combination of both hard work and rest. Without rest, you greatly increase the risk of injury through overtraining. In addition, a fitness plan would be incomplete if it did not include both cardio and strength training.

From a nutritional viewpoint, many experts agree that aiming for a balance of eating foods that benefit your health 80 percent of the time. This means 20 percent of the time, you would be consuming foods that are considered treats. By doing this, you can

avoid feelings of deprivation and reduce the likelihood of a binge. When you apply this method of eating to daily caloric intake it looks like this: if an individual eats 2,000 calories per day, 1,600 of those calories come from healthy sources and 400 of his or her calorie allowance could be used for treats.

Another, often forgotten, aspect of health is sleep. If we applied balance to our sleep habits than we would avoid extremes.

How frequently do we ask our bodies to play catch up on the weekends because we can’t find enough time to sleep during the week? When we deprive our bodies of sleep, our bodies are unable to produce sufficient amounts of human growth hormone.

This hormone stimulates cell reproduction and regeneration, which helps our bodies heal more efficiently and reduces signs of aging. Ideally, you should try to sleep at least eight hours a night to gain the maximum amount of benefits.

Bongo Ball Mania crash-landed at CSC this weekend, thanks to CAB’s sponsorship.

Cutting Edge Production, a novelty entertainment company and the inventors of Bongo Ball, traveled from Grand Rapids, Michigan, to provide a stress-relieving program for CSC’s students.

CEP is a company that hosts novelty games for schools and colleges across the United States. At the college level, CEP hosts Bongo Ball Mania, Battleball, and Zorbs.

“Bongo Ball is like paintless paint ball and we play any of the paint ball games with Bongo Ball,” Scott Kibby, CEP employee, said.

Dressed in facemasks and carrying air cannon guns, students split into two teams of three, four, or five and faced off at opposite ends of the course. Ducking, dodging, and hiding behind giant inflated obstacles, players take aim and shot at the opposing team until there is only “one man standing,” or an entire team has been eliminated.

“A couple friends and I were eating in the Student Center when Chris (Green), the director of the NPAC (and director of student activities) walked up to us and asked if we wanted to play Bongo Ball,” Brandon Pippenger, 21, senior of Banning, California, said. “They needed a few more players for a full game. We didn’t know what it was, but after (Chris) said we could shoot each other with foam balls, we were sold. We originally started out playing every man for himself, and it ended up turning into chasing each other around and shooting each other at point blank range. After we got tired from running around, we began playing games with teams of four, and we started being more strategic because once you were shot, you were out of the game.”

Prior to the match beginning, the foam “nerf balls” are thrown out into the playing field and the teams must collect the ammunition during game play while avoiding being shot. Bongo Ball Mania was named the “Game of the Year” in the 2011 Campus Activities Magazine, according to CEP Inc. “The most challenging part of Bongo Ball was leaving your bunker to go fetch balls for ammo,” Pippenger said.

International club brings culture to CSC campus Shae Brennan Reporter

Over midterm break, October 19-23, the International Students Club will be visiting Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium. The club also discussed other upcoming events, such as birthday celebrations for club members during its meeting Thursday. The zoo is noted for its iMax theater and variety of animals, and is rated as the no. 1 Zoo in the World, August 2014, by TripAdvisor.

ebrate with a potluck dinner and cake in the Red Room at 6 p.m., Friday, Sept. 11. All members are invited. Birthday celebrations for members whose birthdays fall in the fall, winter, and spring months have not been set yet. A new event, a henna tattooing party, is planned sometime this year, but the details are still undecided, said Bethany Bergstrom, senior of Axtell. Annual events such as the food-tasting party, pumpkin carving, and cookie decorating will occur this year as usual, but the details also are undecided.

President of the club, Bethany Bergstrom, said this club is open to all students, not just international students. She also said that there are no official requirements to join the

club, but added that attending meetings and participating in events whenever possible is encouraged. Meetings are usually in the Scottsbluff room in the Student Center at 11 a.m. on Thursdays. Bergstrom also noted that students can follow the club’s activity on its Facebook page, CSC International Club.

The Facebook page states that the International Students Club promotes cultural diversity while giving students from around the world an opportunity to have a place they can call home.

It also encourages students from the United States to interact with and understand students from other cultures.

Newman offers Wed. gatherings Jessica Thiele Reporter

The Newman House is the Catholic Ministry to the Chadron State College Campus. It provides an active Christian fellowship to Catholics and non-Catholics alike. The group meets at 5 p.m., most Wednesdays at the Newman House on 907 Main Street. A meal is provided and a spiritual program with guest speakers is offered.

Mass is on the first Wednesday of each month.

The history of the Newman House is “somewhat shrouded in mystery,” Colby Thomazin, director, campus minister, and facilitator of the house, said.

“The Newman House has been at the current location since 1969, but the house itself was probably started in 1949 or 1950 at St. Patrick’s when it was part of the parish ministry. It still is in some respects.”

According to Thomazin, the Newman House is a part of and receives money from the diocese of Grand Island.

“We’re really a very small one (Newman House)…we really just try to do community building,” Thomazin said. Students involved with the Newman House feel they have found a family in other members.

“I can go to them and talk about things I usually don’t talk to my regular friends about and know that they won’t judge me,” said Justin Hartman, 19, sophomore of Valentine, said.

“Newman is like being part of a big, happy family,” Annie Johnson, 20, junior of Martin, South Dakota, said.

“One of my favorite experiences about Newman has been getting an Easter basket or a Christmas stocking full of goodies from a family in the Catholic Church.”

Chadron State’s Greek life has come alive, bringing a full week of activities to campus.

Monday kicked off with the “Freshman 15” ice cream social under the Clock Tower. “Thrifty Tuesday” brought The Price is Right to the Student Center. Top prizes included a futon, TV, and mini fridge. Seventy-five students signed in to try their hand at guessing the price of their possible prize. Slip and Flip was the activity for “Wet T-shirt Wednesday.” Students made teams and slid down Math and Science Hill, then had to flip a cup over. The first team to have all their cups flipped won. Tye-dye T-shirts were also handed out to the first 250 students to attend. “Thirsty Thursday” is from 3-5 p.m., today in the Lakota and Ponderosa rooms. “Mocktails” and games are set up for students, as well as an alcohol awareness presentation from Xi Delta Zeta members.

The Spring Break dance that was set for Friday has been postponed. A later date

has not yet been confirmed.

Omega Phi Rho was founded in 1998, according to interim President Cody Cooper, 21, junior of Gothenburg.

They usually are the sole host of Greek Week, but this year their newly revived sister sorority, Xi Delta Zeta, has joined them in the celebration.

“We decided to use college clichés, such as Freshman 15 and Thirsty Thursday, as the themes for Greek Week to catch the freshmen’s interest,” Xi Delta Zeta President Mackenzie Watson, 21, senior of Mitchell, said.

The fraternity and sorority held a meeting together last April to plan this Fall’s Greek Week activities. They then received a $6,000 budget from CAB to host the event. So far, considerable crowds have been showing up to their activities.

“We’re hoping Greek Week will draw student’s attention and help us expand on campus.,” Watson said. The sorority currently has 16 members, and Omega Phi Rho has 11. They both are accepting pledges, and encourage anyone who is interested to contact a member at the events.
