Cops chat with students over coffee, donuts Haley Glasscock Reporter

Someone Call the Popo/Coffee and Donuts with Cops took place at 7 p.m.

Thursday, in the Reta E. King Library.

The coffee shop provided hot chocolate, coffee, donuts and cookies for the officers and students who attended the event.

Laure Sinn, coordinator of student activities, put on the event to provide safe activities for college students.

“This is a good non-threatening way for students to ask questions to officers,” Sinn said.

Several officers came to the event, including Officer Shane Sanders, Officer Logan Dailey, Officer Tony Knap-

pen, State Trooper Mick Downing, and Sergeant Michael Lautzenhiser.

Students were allowed to ask the officers questions. One of these included: how many MIP’s have you given?

The officers talked about giving MIP’s and DUI’s to family members.

Some students asked about house parties and Sanders said that if it’s not causing a problem, they don’t care.

Students on campus have been told that if they are too intoxicated to drive, they should call the cops for a ride home to get home safely. Some students objected to the idea.

“Is a ticket the end of the world if you’re going to make it home safely?”

Saunders said.

Shelby Rowin, 19, sophomore of Gretna, came to the event to hear the

officers’ stories.

“Being a cop is not as easy as it’s made out to be,” she said.

Some officers told stories recounting excuses they have heard from people who have been pulled over.

The stories ranged from the individual having to go to the bathroom to having their significant other waiting in the shower for them.

Mikayla Gallagher, 19, sophomore of Spearfish, South Dakota, went to the event because her major includes interest in the law enforcement field.

“I’m a legal studies major. I already knew a lot about the legal system, but I wanted to see a different perspective on it than we have at home,” she said.

The discussion this week was about Homecoming. Clubs can make a powerpoint slide and get it up on the big screen TV in the student center, Andy Martin, vice chair of programming, said. He asked that clubs create their slides and then email them to him to get them displayed on the TV. Stephanie Steele, vice chair of records, said CAB is now on Twitter and Instagram. They will follow anyone back who follows them and then gives them a shoutout.

If clubs want their events promoted on CAB’s sites, they must let Steele know. Also, she reminded clubs to send constitutions to Jon Lordino.

said the Week of Welcome went great and the minion scavenger hunt should be tallied up in about a week to determine the winner.

Jacob Rissler, student trustee, reminded students again that his meeting is Sept. 6. If anyone wants something brought up before the board, they should let him know before Sept. 5.

Lordino, chief justice of Student Senate, said the four clubs last week that didn’t get any money allocated to them, need to come to Senate on Monday, so they can reallocate their money.

He said they will be recieve all their money they ask for. He said there should be no discussion. He also said he needs constitutions from all the clubs by Friday.

When the meeting was open for any new

business, The Pit asked if anyone wanting to sit on a Halloween committee to sign up after the meeting. This year they are going to try and do events the entire week of Halloween.

A Cappella announced that their auditions will be Friday from 3-6 p.m., in Memorial Hall Room 118, and to contact Lane Swedberg or Zach Henderson with questions.

NAFME announced they will be having a water balloon fight from 5-7 p.m., Sept. 11 at Wilson Park.

Cardinal Key, an all-women honors society, is looking for new members and will be accepting them until midterm break.

A 3.25 GPA is required and applicants must be sophomores. They usually only take a total of 25 members and currently sit at 12 or 13 members.

Ice-cold challenge sweeps CSC Across campus, students are taking the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge.

T

he ALS Ice Bucket Challenge is trending around the world and has finally hit the CSC Campus.

The challenge asks that nominees pour a bucket of ice water on themselves. The sudden cold is said to simulate the effects of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

When a nominee receives the challenge, they are supposed to donate $10, post a video of their challenge, and then nominate others to do the same. If a nominee wants to opt out of taking the challenge, they can make a $100 charitable donation to the ALS Association.

According to BBC, the challenge has already raised more than $98.2 million worldwide, and millions of challenge videos have been posted to Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube.

Celebrities have helped spread ALS awareness through their videos, as well as friends tagging each other through

social media.

As a CSC cheerleader, our team was also nominated to do the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. In response we nominated the football team, the men’s and women’s basketball teams, the wrestling team, and the softball team.

The cheerleading squad posted our video Friday, Aug. 29, but I would like to encourage all my fellow Chadron State students to take part in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge and donate to the cause.

So far, many of you have probably agreed with the challenge, but some are disagreeing. While the intent is to help raise money to find a cure for ALS, many of us are focusing on this one disease while other foundations are suffering. I want to encourage people to help support ALS research, but please also don’t forget about other foundations that need support as well.

Lordino on coverage and comic strips Dear editor: As a current graduate student, Student Senate officer, graduate assistant, and proud alumnus I am writing today in concern for some of the articles that you have been allowing in your paper.

As an award winning paper, I would like to assume [sic] that you have a strong grasp of the right way to portray an award winning paper.

Many are questioning your judgment concerning what should and should not go into a college publication.

I have found several of the articles in your paper distasteful as well as straight-out disrespectful to the student body, Chadron State College, and your publication as a whole.

As the voice of Chadron State College I would assume your purpose is to report college campus news and events as a matter of record and information, while serving as the voice of the student body.

Some of the articles that you have published in the past as well as a recent so called comic strip about the new EagleCards are offensive and disparaging to students and the reputation of the College. The Editors and Advisors of the Eagle should have the knowledge, professionalism and decency to avoid such disparaging submissions.

I take great pride in the institution that I am attending as well as what Chadron State College has to offer its students. The article that was published about the EagleCards seemed to be promoting rebellious actions against what Chadron State College stands for as well as what Chadron State College expects of its students, faculty, and staff.

I have been approached by many people about past articles that have invaded people’s private lives. Often obscene, one sided, inaccurate, and pandering articles are things that we as students cannot and should not accept from our newspaper.

I hope if other students have the same view as I do about the Eagle’s articles that they would too write in and express their concerns so this matter will not go unnoticed any longer.

We expect you to avoid irresponsible articles at all times and that you would look out for what is in the best interest of the publication, the College, and the constituents that you claim to represent.

I believe your articles are going down the wrong road and seem to be getting worse. Are you striving to be the National Inquirer or the Wall Street Journal?

If you are trying for the latter, then I would suggest that you find the line that separates the two and choose which publication that you are trying to emulate.

Volleyball team kills alumni team 4 sets to 1 Ashley Swanson Managing Editor

An easy-going game of volleyball spiked the interest of a small crowd, Saturday, during the Alumni game, which brought back eight CSC graduates from 2011-13.

The 2014 CSC volleyball team won 4-1 sets against the alumni team, consisting of Volleyball Coaching Assistant Kristina Harter, Mollie Jones, Lexi Hoagland, and Mallory Irvine, all 2012 graduates. Playing alongside them were Brenna Jungck and Lauren Yoder, 2011 graduates; and Jessica Safer, a 2013 graduate.

“It was a fun time, but we were out of shape,” Safer, graduate assistant for communication arts, said. “The new squad is a big team, and they look good.”

The alumni team didn’t have a setter, so players of the 2014 squad served on the alumni side as setters. The game started with Justine Ackie, junior of Phoenix, Arizona, on the alumni side, and then switched to Mariah Conyers, sophomore of Bellwood, and finally to Shelby Garnder, redshirt freshman of Colby, Kansas.

“It was fun to compete against some of our players,” Harter said. “It was competitive on both sides, but we were slower.”

“I thought we did a good job,” Head Coach Chris Wells said.

While he thought the team played well Saturday, he said the biggest hurdle is to get better each and every day. Wells said it was nice for the players of today to know the players of the past.

First football game to honor All-Century team Jordyn Hulinsky Sports Editor Saturday opens the Eagles football season against Missouri S&T, Rolla, noon at Elliott Field. This season marks the 100th season of football at CSC. In honor of this momentous occasion, an All-Century team has been named and will be honored at the season opener this weekend.

The All-Century team is composed of 58 players from the past. Criteria for making the team included being named to the All-Nebraska or RMAC All-Conference teams at least twice, selected to AllAmerican teams or the CSC Athletic Hall of Fame, and finally impressive statistics.

Thirty-six players from the team said they would be at the game Saturday. Some of the players planning to be there include Corey Anderson (1987-1990), Travis Atter (2006-2009), Austin Bailey (2005-2008), Mitch Barry (2001-2004), Jason Barthel (1998-2001), Randy Bauer (1971-1973), Casey Beran (1995-1999), Kevin Berg (2007-2010), Cory Brooks (1992-1995), Jess Clarke (1996-1999), Glen Clinton (2010-2013),

Those honored players will be recognized at halftime of Saturday’s game. Honorees will also be treated to a pregame lunch and will be invited to a post-game gathering. They will receive a memento as recognition.

Sutter to commence A splash of fun Galaxy Series Tuesday Janelle Kesterson Lifestyles Editor The first installment of the 2014-15 Galaxy Series is set for 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Memorial Hall Auditorium. Admission is free. The college has paired with the Pine Ridge Ranger District of the Nebraska National Forests and Grasslands to bring environmental expert Paul S. Sutter to the campus.

This event is a portion of a continuing series of cultural and educational events this year in western Nebraska to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Wilderness Act. Sutter is an associate professor at the University of Colorado in Boulder. He will speak on the beginning of the wilderness movement and will sign copies of his book, “Driv-

en Wild: How the Fight Against Automobiles Launched the Modern Wilderness Movement,” following his presentation.

Shellie Johns, Galaxy Series coordinator, plans to encourage all Galaxy Series performers to interact with students, share career advice, and provide other outreach opportunities while on campus.

Sutter is no exception and plans to visit at least one classroom while at Chadron State.

As an added feature, photo entries in the Forest Service’s “Wilderness Shoot Out” photo contest, earlier this summer, will be on display in Memorial Hall’s lobby.

“Wallflower” tugs at heartstrings, explores life lessons Ashley Swanson Managing Editor

What’s it like to be 16? For some, that was just a couple of years ago, and for others it seems longer than we’d like to admit.

Stephen Chbosky, author and director of “The Perks of Being a Wallflower,” shows the struggles of being a teenager, going through high school, and trying to understand that thing we call life.

Chbosky explains all of these through the eyes of 16-year-old Charlie, an awkward, unsettled young man entering his freshman year of high school. Charlie starts his year off with no friends other than his English teacher.

The book is written as though Charlie is writing a series of letters, each dedicated “Dear Friend.” This steps away from the normal narrative of fiction and makes for an interesting read.

As the story moves along, feelings heat up as Charlie [spoiler alert] falls for Sam, who is, of course, dating another, apparently a step up from her previous boyfriends. Despite his longing for her, he keeps his distance and wishes her happiness.

Meanwhile, Charlie’s blocked childhood memories begin to come back, flooding his mind with forgotten pain, eventually making him collapse into a world of confusion and despair. This ultimately threatens his relationships, and his way of life.

Both the movie and book tug at the heartstrings, drag tears down cheeks, and force its audiences to grab the nearest tissue box throughout this emotional roller coaster.
