FRIENDS AND FAMILY WEEKEND BEGINS TOMORROW Formerly known as Family Day, CSC renamed the weekend of activities to Friends and Family Weekend, to expand the audience. Students and visitors are encouraged to not only visit the college, but explore local restaurants as well.

2 members needed for AFB Nalani Stewart News Editor The AFB, Activity Fee Board, needs two members to complete this year’s committee. AFB is responsible for allotting the money that students pay each year in activity fees to fund many of the clubs on campus.

“If we don’t have enough people on the committee, then there’s no committee,” said Chair Trista Schell. “And then you guys can’t request money.”

In another matter, this year’s Homecoming theme, The Wizard of Oz, was announced. Homecoming starts Sept. 18. The dress up dates for homecoming go as follows: Monday: Oz the Great and Powerful (Green & Bling Day) Tuesday: Twisted Twister (Wacky Day) Wednesday: Which Witch is Which? (Twin Day)

Sept. 15. The bedsheets can be made in four categories including Humor, Originality, People’s Choice, and School Spirit. The bedsheets will be displayed at the Homecoming Parade taking place Sept. 23, and club participation will be rewarded with a chance of winning a $100 gift certificate. No participation in the parade will be considered an absence of a CAB meeting.

CAB also nominated two students, Kimberly Hernandez, junior of Scottsbluff, and Cody Cooper, senior of Gothenburg, for Homecoming Royalty. A mandatory CAB meeting for club advisors and presidents regarding clubs, structure of clubs, and Title IX, will take place at 11 a.m., Sept. 19, or Sept. 21.

NSCS Chancellor issues statement on President Trump’s DACA plan In response to President Donald Trump’s termination to the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), NSCS Chancellor Stan Carpenter issued a statement Wednesday, letting DACA students know that they are still welcome.

“As Chancellor of the Nebraska State College System, I want to reassure our DACA students at Chadron, Peru and Wayne that you continue to be welcome as a valuable part of our college community,” Carpenter said in the statement.

Carpenter also encouraged Congress to “find a solution that will protect our students and allow them to continue to pursue their education.”

CSC expands Title IX education with new Coordinator Torri Brumbaugh Lifestyles Editor CSC’s former IT Analyst Ted Tewahade steps into a new role as the lead Title IX Coordinator.

Tewahade worked as a Title IX investigator for the past two years while he worked in IT. He gladly stepped into the full time position as the Title IX Coordinator when CSC decided to change their focus to Title IX education.

According to Tewahade, his position as Title IX Coordinator carries many responsibilities. Tewahade spends his time educating staff and students about Title IX, Title IX’s policies, the resources available to those on campus, while also receiv-

ing and investigating allegations, and coordinating services for victims while ‘ working closely with outside constituents.’

Title IX’s policies handle allegations of sexual harassment, sexual violence and sex-based discrimination in all forms, including, but not limited to, domestic violence, stalking, rape, and sexual cyberbullying.

With a new coordinator, CSC is currently trying to strengthen Title IX policies and procedures as well as raise awareness to sex discrimination. Tewahade is also trying to make staff and students more aware of Title IX issues and how to report possible issues.

“Our ultimate goal is to prevent sex discrimination from occurring. If it does occur, we want to be in the best position to assist the impacted parties and hold perpetrators accountable,”

said Tewahade.

The goal of Title IX is to create a safe and welcoming environment for students. By amping up the education on campus, more students will hopefully understand Title IX policies and feel comfortable to come forward with allegations.

“Sex discrimination will not be tolerated. Students will have the opportunity to learn more about Title IX and sex discrimination throughout the academic year,” said Tewahade.

Be social media smart We live in the digital era. Anything is available within seconds right at the tips of your fingers. It is a blessing.

It is a curse.

You may have heard this a thousand times. For some of you, this may be the first. But what you put on the internet, which includes social media applications like Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat, can come back to haunt you in the future.

When you put information on these apps, it stays there. You might be able to delete it, but all it takes is one person to screenshot, and that information becomes permanent, and it’s under someone else’s control.

It is important to remember that you are not the only one who sees what you tweet or what picture you upload. And while you may be too busy preoccupying yourself with the number of followers you have accumulated, someone is searching through your tweets from six months ago.

Potential employers, current employers, or even admission directors to that graduate school you want to attend all have access to this information. Do you want these individuals, possible bosses or professors, seeing what you did last weekend?

While it is still important to enjoy your time at college and express yourself as an individual, you have to keep your future in the back of your mind. As a fresh college graduate, you must keep this question in mind: will your social media habits put you at risk of being overlooked by future employers, or are you putting yourself

We have to understand that this is the age we live in.

Almost everyone has a camera on their phone. Almost every college student has a Snapchat account, and when something crazy breaks out at a party, in class, or at a game, the first thing people do is pull out their phones and begin recording.

It isn’t enough to monitor what is going on personal accounts. You have to be aware that anything in public can be recorded. Avoid situations that you are going to regret when the public gets ahold of what happened.

While social media can be an exposing open forum to your life, it can also help you make professional connections that will open doors in the future. You can start using social media as a tool to learn and stay informed.

Follow people with careers in the field you are looking to go into. Interact with them. Study the types of posts and content being produced by leaders and businesses that you admire.

Tailor your profiles to represent the type of person you want to be known as to prospective employers. As a college student, social media should be used as a platform to introduce yourself into the professional world, not a display of your drunken indiscretions.

Even if the material you post on social media isn’t scarring to your reputation, be mindful of who can see it. Take precautions and use security settings to keep unwanted people from accessing your personal information.

As the nation watched the excitement of college football unfold, the Eagles earned their piece of the cake, winning a come-back thriller Saturday against Fort Lewis College, Durango, Colorado, 25-19.

In the second quarter, CSC quarterback Dalton Holst, redshirt freshman of Gillette, Wyoming, was intercepted by Fort Lewis’ Dre Cortez, junior of Dallas, who ran the pick back for a touchdown, putting the Skyhawks up 16-0.

“It was a total team win,” Head Coach Jay Long said. “Our defense kept us in the whole game. Our special teams did an outstanding job and our offense found a way to get into the endzone and win.”

On the next possession, Holst quickly bounced back, tossing a 57-yard touchdown pass to Tevon Wright, sophomore of Miami.

Brian Wood, redshirt senior of Stockton, California, ran in the extra point, cutting the Skyhawk lead to eight.

Holst finished the game with six completions and 101 yards, with one interception and one touchdown.

In the second half, the Eagles decided on the veteran Matt Vinson, redshirt junior of Box Elder, South Dakota, to general the offense. Vinson went to work quickly, finding sophomore wide receiver Stevann Brown, redshirt sophomore of Casper, Wyoming, for a 75-yard touchdown, tying the game at 16 following the extra point kick.

Will Morgan, sophomore of Fort Collins, Colorado, granted the Eagles their first lead, knocking in a 22-yard field goal in the third quarter.

The fourth quarter belonged to Colt Foster, redshirt sophomore of Hemingford.

Foster accounted for 66 yards and the final touchdown of the game, sealing the win.

Although the Skyhawks led in time of possession, the CSC defense stepped up in the second half, allowing just three points in the final period. Keenan Johnson, redshirt sophomore of Chadron led the stiff defense with 10 tackles and one sack. Ryan Wood, redshirt senior of Stockton, California, combined with Brian for 17 tackles and two tackles for a loss.

The special team’s unit received conference recognition, with the RMAC Special Teams Player of the Week going to punter Zack Kozlick, junior of Coronado, California, in his first game as an Eagle.

The work is far from over as conference-powerhouse Colorado Mesa University, Grand Junction, visits CSC, Saturday. The Mavericks rolled Western State Colorado University, Gunnison, in their opener 49-23.

Mav’s quarterback Eystin Salum, junior of Denver, earned RMAC Offensive Player of the Week, throwing for 290 yards and five touchdowns. He also tossed two interceptions but made up for the errors with his feet, rushing for 53 yards and two more touchdowns.

Long said that Salum is a special player and that CMU has a lot of weapons on offense and CSC will need to play well defensively.

Long also said that CSC’s quarterback decision between Holst and Vinson will be made at game time.

Eagles show improvement with 2 wins John Murphy Reporter The Chadron State College volleyball team opened their season last weekend, posting a record of 2-2 while winning their first and last matches at The Bulldog Bash in Seward.

“We are an entirely new team from last year with only three returners, it’s going to take time to adjust,” Madison Webb, junior of Loveland, Colorado, said. “Overall it was a pretty good weekend, we did a number of things well but saw a number of things to improve.”

After opening the season Friday afternoon with a 3-0 victory against York College, York, winning 25-18, 25-18 and 25-23, the Eagles fell Friday evening to Concordia University, Seward, in four sets, losing 25-21, 23-25, 1825 and 15-25.

Saturday morning, the Eagles fell to Northwestern College, Orange City, Iowa, also again in four sets, losing 25-22, 16-25, 21-25, and 14-25. They were able to rebound Saturday afternoon, beating the University of Mary, Bismarck, North Dakota, 3-1, with scores of 2522, 11-25, 25-20 and 25-10.

Against York, Gaby Varela, senior of Dorado, Puerto Rico, led the Eagles, finishing with 14 kills. Webb assisted on 20 of the Eagles’ 43 kills, while Mickey Trimble, junior of Platte City, Missouri, assisted on 15.

An attack percentage of .08 doomed the Eagles against Concordia. Although Varela finished with 17 kills and Webb had 26 assists, they were unable to sustain their advantage from set one.

digs. The Eagles finished with their best attack percentage of the tournament, .273, in the loss.

While evening their record and coming home with a victory, the Eagles had possibly their best team performance of the weekend against the University of Mary.

Dowell finished with 13 kills and 12 digs, Webb had 24 assists and 12 digs, and Emily Bruce, senior of Centerton, Arkansas, had 14 digs.

The Eagles are on the road again this week, as they travel to Joplin, Missouri, for the TownePlace Suites Invitation. They will face Missouri Southern State University, Joplin, and Arkansas Tech University, Russellville, tomorrow and Maryville University, St. Louis, and Oklahoma Baptist University, Shawnee, Saturday.

“We’re excited to face good competition again this weekend,” Webb said. “No game is going to be an easy win but we’re willing and excited to put in the work and do whatever it takes to be successful this season.”

Banzhaf, Henry lead Eagles to 2nd place Justin Brester Reporter The men’s and women’s cross country teams each earned second place finishes at the South Dakota School of Mines Hardrocker Cross Country Classic at Robbinsdale Park in Rapid City, South Dakota, Saturday morning.

In the 5K women’s race, Black Hills State University’s Tori Moore, junior of Ipswich, South Dakota, took the top spot with a time of 19 minutes, 34 seconds. CSC’s Nicky Banzhaf, senior of Chadron, crossed the line in second place with a time of 19 minutes, 56 seconds. Alyse Henry, sophomore of Rock Springs, Wyoming, trailed Banzhaf by six seconds to take the third spot on the podium.

Two other Eagle runners rounded out the top 10, Julia Eskelson, freshman of Meeker, Colorado, earned ninth place, while Taylor Allison, senior of Gordon, took 10th. Teammate Dominique Oden, sophomore of Anaheim, California, finished in 11th.

The Black Hills State women won the team com-

petition with 30 points. The Eagles finished the day with 35 points, and South Dakota School of Mines ended with 55 points.

BHSU also took the men’s team title with 28 points. The Eagles scored 40 points and Gillette College, Gillette, Wyoming, finished third with 75 points.

Gillette College’s Ayrton Ledesma-Fuentes, sophomore of Tillamook, Oregon, won the 8K men’s race with a time of 26 minutes, 52 seconds.

Riley Howard, sophomore of Anchorage, Alaska, was the Eagles’ top finisher, crossing the line after 27 minutes, 1 second.

All the Eagle men finished inside the top 15 in Rapid City. Phill Duncan, senior of Chadron, finished sixth in 27 minutes, 22 seconds. Sheldon Curley, freshmen of Arizona, came in two seconds later for a seventh place finish. Eric Yager, senior of Hot Springs, South Dakota, finished in 27 minutes, 37 seconds to take 10th place. The final Eagle to cross the line was Joseph Gertner, senior of Fort Morgan, Colorado, in 14th place.

The Eagles will be back in action at home, Saturday as they host the Chadron State Invitational.

Golfers finish last in Pueblo Kylee Odenbach Reporter The predominantly freshmen led golf team faced tough challenges for the first tournament of the season. CSC women’s golf team finished last place in the Samuel Proal Invitational at Pueblo, Colorado.

The team stepped away from the tournament with more experience and knowing what they need to work on.

Sam Rahmig, junior of Gering, is the only member of the team that has had collegiate experience. She shot a score of 85 the first day and 88 the second day, turning in a two-day total of 173. Coach John Ritzen expected her to out shoot the freshmen on the team due to her experience.

The freshmen of the team ran into a few struggles at the tournament.

Adrianna Weeldreyer of Newell, South Dakota, shot a score of 88 the first day and 96 the second day, giving her a two-day total of 184. Logan Kasten of Cheyenne, Wyoming, shot a 95 the first day and a 109 the second day, totaling to 204 for the two days. Tori Meschke

of Broken Bow, shot a score of 103 on day one and 105 on day two, making her two-day total 208. The three freshmen on the team faced a few obstacles at the first meet, but walked away from the tournament with more experience.

Coach John Ritzen explained that nerves may have got to the girls at the meet. Ritzen elaborated that some of the challenges the golfers experienced at Pueblo included “putting and tough greens,” Ritzen said the greens “had a lot of bend and were very fast.” The team is going to work on course management and practicing properly before the next meet.

The University of Colorado, Colorado Springs won the tournament with a score of 301-303-604. The Eagles turned in a total score of 371-398-769. Sophomore Madison Hill of Lewis University won the individual title with a two-day total of 146.

The team only has two practices before they leave for the next meet. Ritzen plans to work hard in practice to successfully ready his team for the RMAC Fall Tournament, Monday and Tuesday, in Lakewood, Colorado.

Oompa Loompa, doopity- DON’T Caleb Wiederhold Reporter So, as some of you may know, Warner Bros. has been releasing several direct-to-video animated movies, ranging from Scooby-Doo to DC Superheroes along with a few other franchises. Another one of those movies includes Tom and Jerry.

Just this year, Warner Bros. released their “original” movie with Tom and Jerry, which is called “Tom and Jerry: Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.”

When the trailer was released, it got the same negative treatment as the “Emoji Movie” had when they released their trailer.

After looking at the feedback, and watching the movie myself, I’m going to have to side with the negative bandwagon. Tom and Jerry are slapped into the classic 1971 film with the same plot and only a few twists.

In one part, Slugworth goes into the factory to try to get the Everlasting Gobstopper and reveals he isn’t a bad guy. Also, he sings “I Want It Now” when he meets Charlie for the first time. He also sang it again while he’s chases Tom, Jerry and Tuffy, who’s an intern Oompa Loompa, with Veruca Salt in the goose room. So, Slugworth chasing Tom and Jerry

around was pointless.

The tunnel scene was scary where Tuffy did sing “Pure Imagination” in the 1971 film. It is crazier than the other version, but in my opinion, it’s not the best. Tuffy is very creepy while performing that number and he even said the h-word in a Tom and Jerry film.

Also, there are parts of the 1971 film that were essential parts, but seemed rushed in the Tom and Jerry version. The golden tickets scene seemed rushed and even the Oompa Loompa songs were short.

Then, come the character designs. Some of the characters look uncanny and creepy. For example, Mike Teevee has bucked-teeth in this version and looks like a Lost Boys reject from Disney’s Peter Pan. Another example would be Slugworth, who looks terrible, especially when he meets Charlie Bucket in the tunnel.

As for the actors, one of them is Dallas Lovato, who’s Demi Lovato’s sister and voices Violet Beauregarde here. I don’t know why she’s involved in this project, but I think she deserves better than this. Also, Sean Schemmel and Kate Higgins, who have been known for anime English voice acting, are involved in this too.

There are a few things I could give credit to. One

redeeming factor is Mr. Salt standing up against Veruca. Veruca Salt acted like a spoiled princess and after escaping the furnace, Mr. Salt finally had enough and was going to show her discipline. Another thing is, at least Tom and Jerry didn’t fight each other in the end, like most of their endings. Personally, I feel bad for Tom, because he has the bad luck in the end , while Jerry getting good luck. At least they each have a win in the end. But, those factors aren’t enough to redeem the movie itself.

“Tom and Jerry: Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” is an unoriginal animated crossover.

Warner Bros. might call this an original movie, but this is not original. It’s putting Tom and Jerry and a few other supporting Warner Bros. characters in a 1971 remake of a classic film. ScoobyDoo has been putting out a lot of animated movies, but at least they were trying to be original with their stories. This is just another remake of Willy Wonka.

Several pointless things are going on in the film, original scenes are rushed, and the redesigns of the characters are very unpleasant. It’s an insult to the 1971 film, an insult to its fans, and an insult to Gene Wilder, who passed away in 2016. This might be the rotten cheese of the Tom and Jerry franchise that I have watched.

The pictures, taken during space shuttle flights, present a unique perspective of Earth’s weather and landforms.

large scale weather phenomena such as hurricanes, large thunderstorms, typhoons and unusual cloud formations.

Six pictures present desert regions and one of those shows dark clouds of smoke from oil well fires that, from this view, resemble the colored smoke bombs kids light off during the 4th of July celebrations.

Four pictures stand out from the rest both in subject and in aesthetics. One is titled “Tongue of the Ocean,” and displays a portion of the Great Bahama Bank. There is a distinct difference in blue hues, made by the differing

depths of the water and by the diverse coral patterns.

“Red Lake,” is a photo of Africa’s Lake Natron, shaped kind of like a peanut, which is literally a coppery-red shade because of the chemistry in the water and biotic blooms, per the tag under the picture.

Titled simply “Sunrise,” only one photo doesn’t appear to be taken from above. This one says it was taken by a space shuttle crew in 1991, with the silhouettes of thunderclouds along the horizon.

The photographs will be on display in Memorial Hall’s Gallery 239 until Sept. 28, the gallery is free and open Monday through Friday 9 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

Water balloon volleyball promotes campus Greek life Anh Le Reporter Chadron State College’s Greek Week events started last week, bringing a week of activities to college students, including the Water Balloon Volleyball hosted by Xi Delta Zeta, Wednesday at the Backyard.

Xi Delta Zeta is a local sorority at Chadron State College containing members who are females attending CSC. This year, they hosted the Water Balloon Volleyball as part of Greek Week. Each team contains two people. They used blankets to catch and throw the water balloon to the other side. Sixteen students showed up and joined the event as well as the raffle for prizes. Before and after the event begins, they also played normal sand volleyball to warm up and enjoy a nice afternoon.

Students in attendance had chances to win prizes, enjoy snacks and refreshment while hanging out with friends at the picnic area near the sand volleyball court.

Katherine Esselstein, 19, sophomore of Mitchell, member of Xi Delta Zeta, thought that the event did not go as planned but they still had a good turnout. “It wasn’t fantastic, but it helped to get our name and organization out there,” Esselstein said.
