EDITORIAL–THE EAGLE’S VIEW

Take a lesson from ‘the boy who lived’ People always say when you come to college that it’s now time to take control of your life. You are no longer under your parents’ control and it’s finally time for you to make your own mistakes, to grow, to love, to learn.

College does offer those opportunities, but you have to actually act in order to take control of your life. You have to be willing to make mistakes, willing to grow, willing to love, willing to be hurt, and willing to learn. You have to be tough. If you aren’t you are going to be pushed around by various people in the world.

Sadly in this world there are people who aren’t necessarily good people. There are people out there who will intentionally cause you harm. But that doesn’t mean you have to be brought down with those people.

In the “Harry Potter” series, the well-known villain is Lord Voldemort, but the most hated character is Dolores Umbridge. Umbridge was a person in

authority and she abused the power she had. She punished the students simply because they tried to speak up and question her. And she’d have gotten away with it, except that the students didn’t give up.

The students in “Harry Potter” weren’t scared to question authority. They weren’t scared to question those who had more power than them. They weren’t scared to question those who were older and “wiser” than them.

Those students set an example for us. The students take matters into their own hands and they fight for their rights. They fight for what they believe in.

As students, we have more power than we know. We might be young and “naïve,” as older generations will often claim, but we also have more tools available to us than many of those in the older generations.

It is easier to live life in the shadows of those who came before us, but life is better when you are

in control of your own choices. While it is not acceptable to disregard the advice of your elders, it is acceptable to listen to the advice they have to offer and make educated decisions. Those decisions may include listening to their advice, or taking a different path.

One option is not better than the other, but you have to be prepared to deal with the negative or positive repercussions that result from the path you choose.

College is your opportunity to prepare for the real world, and although that is the truth, people often think that college is some kind of practice for the real world when in reality, the real world is right here, right now.

Now is the time to take control. Now is the time to question. Now is the time to learn and grow. Now and every day. Don’t be scared because the people around you have more power, have more experience, or are older than you. Start standing up for yourself.

Vote on candidate character, policy; not gender, race Preston Goehring Sports Editor If you have had any human interaction at all in the past five months, you know that the presidential race is nearing an end. In a couple months you will cast your vote for the next President of the United States of America. But how many of you are voting for the right reason?

Over the past few months I have heard several “justified” reasons for voting one way or another. Many of them can be viable explanations for casting a vote one way or the other, but there are some reasons that are simply ridiculous.

“I’m voting for Hillary because she would be the first female president.”

“I’m voting for Trump because he is a man.”

Last time I checked, gender is not a qualification for the presidency. I am a firm believer that everyone should vote. It is a responsibility that every citizen has and it should be taken seriously.

Do not vote because you want someone to make history.

It goes the other way too.

Don’t vote for Trump just to keep a woman out of office. Don’t vote for Hillary because Trump’s hair stylist took a sick year.

I think that too many people get caught in that trap.

Being female or male does not make you a better option for the office. It doesn’t matter if you are white, black, brown, purple, or orange. Skin color does not make you a better or worse president. Being a leader, being a voice for the people; these are the qualities that we should look for in a candidate.

Vote because you firmly believe that a candidate would make the best possible president. Vote because you can stand behind what that candidate says.

If you truly believe in a candidate for what he or she has to say, then cast your vote. Let your voice be heard. I have no problem with you voting for what you think is right, even if your opinion is different than mine. Sure we might disagree, but if you stand up for what you believe in, I can respect that.

Voting is everyone’s responsibility to our country.

My fear is that too many people are voting for the wrong reason. Think about what these candidates are actually saying, and how their ideas will affect the country.

Instead of focusing on what they look like, or how they act, focus on what actually matters. Appearance, race, or gender should not be a part of the application.

So before you cast your ballot, remember that whoever you vote for is going to run the nation for the next four years. Voting should be taken seriously, with a lot of thought put into it.

Send your vote in with confidence that your chosen candidate will have a positive impact on our nation.

Sports Editor Redemption from last year’s rough season, wasn’t easy, but CSC, led by a dominating defensive performance, earned a win in the season opener against Fort Lewis College, Durango, Colorado, 17-10. In the 2015 season, the Skyhawks downed the Eagles 47-34, ruining the chances of an over .500 season.

The play of the game came from junior linebacker, Collin Eisenman, of Sheridan, Wyoming. Late in the second quarter, the Skyhawks lined up to punt from their own 20 yard-line. Eisenman stuffed the punt attempt and as the ball rolled into the endzone, Tyler Lewis, redshirt freshman of Arvada, Colorado, scooped it up, giving the Eagles their first touchdown of the season.

The Eagles’ secondary came up big late in the fourth quarter, halting any momentum that FLC gained.

With under two minutes remaining on what would be the Skyhawks’ final drive, Steve Allen, senior of Knoxville, Tennessee, batted a pass down for an incompletion on a long third down.

On the next play, Ryan Wood, senior of Stockton, California, spoiled the Fort Lewis comeback by forcing an incompletion, giving the ball back to CSC with just over a minute remaining.

CSC took a few knees to run out the clock, taking the slim seven-point victory.

Allen finished with three pass breakups, three tackles, and an interception. Wood finished with an interception, a fumble recovery, and six total tackles. Courtland Joshua, senior of Donaldsonville, Louisiana, led the defense in tackles with 11.

On the other side of the ball, the CSC offense did not have a stellar performance. With only 166 yards of total offense, the Eagles struggled to get any momentum through the air, or the ground.

The longest play was a 24-yard touchdown pass from redshirt sophomore quarterback TD Stein, of Chadron, to Matt Reader, redshirt sophomore of Appleton, Wisconsin, in the last two minutes of the first half.

Stein finished the game with seven completions in 18 attempts.

The running game struggled for CSC. Derek Jackson, junior of Pueblo West, Colorado, led the ground game with just 41 net yards in 16 attempts. Stein averaged six yards per carry, for a total of 30 yards in just five tries.

The Eagles will face another RMAC opponent, Colorado Mesa University, Grand Junction, Saturday. The Mavericks just grabbed the No. 25 spot on the American Football Coaches Association poll. Mesa picked up its first win against Western State Colorado University, Gunnison, 3414, last week.

CSC’s secondary will be put to the test, as Mesa put up 326 yards of passing last week plus 188 on the ground.

With a 1-3 record after competing at the Point Loma Nazarene University tournament, San Diego, the Eagles’ volleyball team earned a third of the road-wins the team registered last season.

Men cross country team win 1st meet, women 3rd Justine Stone Lifestyles Editor Chadron State men’s cross country team opened its season with a win at the South Dakota School of Mines Invitational at Founders Park in Rapid City, South Dakota.

Chadron State’s Alejandro Garcia, graduate student of Pine Bluffs, Wyoming, was the first Eagle to cross the finish line of the 8,000-km race in 25 minutes, 34 seconds. Garcia was inched out at the end of the race and finished second out of 40 men, one second behind Festus Lagat, of Gillette College, Gillette, Wyoming.

Dylan Stansbury, senior of Crawford, was the second Chadron State runner to cross the line, and fifth overall, in 26:51.

Phill Duncan, junior of Chadron; Riley Howard, freshman of Anchorage, Alaska; and Kyle Dietsch, senior of Sheridan, Wyoming, who placed seventh, 10th, and 11th, respectively, were the other men who helped pull the Eagles to the win.

The Eagles scored 35 points as a team, followed by Gillette College with 42, Montana State-Billings with 68, South Dakota Mines had 93, and Central Wyoming, Riverton, with 148 points.

“I believe the team executed what we came to do and that was win the meet,” Garcia said. “We have a lot of talented individuals that are ready to aim for that nationals bid.”

On the women’s side, Chadron State’s Margaret Vinton, senior of North Platte, was the top Eagle coming in fourth place with a time of 19:11.5 on the 5,000km course. Kiya Passero, freshman of Chadron, was the second Eagle to cross the line, completing the course in 19:56.6. Freshmen Savannah Silbaugh, of Upton, Wyoming, and Vanessa Sawyers, of Hot Springs, South Dakota, finished 14th and 16th, respectively, and Taylor Allison, senior of Gordon, finished 17th out of the 32 competitors.

Gillette College’s women took home the women’s title with 31 points followed by South Dakota School of Mines with 55, Chadron State with 63, and Montana State-Billings with 75 points.

Eagle runners will compete against several of the same teams as last weekend at their annual home meet Saturday.

Along with the collegiate races Saturday, there will be a high school meet where more than a dozen schools will attend.

Friday and at 11:30 a.m. Saturday. The Vikings are 4-0 so far this season.

CSC will play No. 13 ranked Winona State University at 3:30 p.m. Friday. Winona State is 5-0 so far this season.

The fourth game of the tournament will be played against the University of Southern Indiana at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

“Every tournament will have its challenges, but I’m feeling good,” Mullis said. “We’ve had productive practices this week. We just have to focus on ourselves and it won’t matter who our opponent is.”

Rahmig finished in a tie for 48th place with a tworound total of 175. She improved on a first-day 89, shooting three strokes less on day two.

The lone freshman for CSC, Sydney Owen, of Rapid City, South Dakota, tied with Rahmig on day one,

but struggled in the second round, shooting a 95 for a total of 184, good for 59th place. Karson Langley, junior of Sidney, finished one place behind Owen, with a total of 185.

“Karson (Langley) was a good surprise,” Ritzen said.

“It was a good improvement for her. If she keeps improving, she will be a contributor.”

There were 79 players at the invite.

The next tournament for CSC is the RMAC No. 1 Tournament Monday and Tuesday, in Denver.

Highway 2 offers opportunity to try new music Jordyn Hulinsky Managing Editor The first time I traveled to Chadron for a college visit as a junior in high school, I slept the entire 5 hours as my dad drove.

Since that first trip here, I’ve made the drive to and from Chadron more than a dozen times, and while I sometimes have passengers, several times I have been alone.

I like to consider myself an expert Highway 2 driver and anyone who knows about Highway 2 knows there are limited areas where you hit a radio station that stays in range for more than 30 minutes. I also like to consider myself a fan of a wide range of music, but I prefer loud songs that I can yell while in the car by myself.

So, like any good millennial, I’ve created a music playlist to keep me awake and focused during my drive,

and I now have the Top 10 Highway 2 traveling songs.

Just remember that the Highway 2 drive isn’t for just anyone; it takes a unique person, and a unique playlist if you are going to survive this drive. So buckle up, we’re going for a ride.

1. “All Star” by Smash Mouth The best kind of music to listen to while driving on Highway 2 is music that you know every word to so you can really get into the song and truly yell the song at the vast open country around you. And if you don’t know all the words to “All Star,” first of all, you’re wrong, and secondly, this is your perfect chance to listen to it on repeat until you do. It will save you from being the laughing stock of your friends in the future.

This is also a perfect start to the drive because it’s an inspirational song to get your mind in a good place

for the long drive ahead.

2. “On Top of the World” by Imagine Dragons This chipper, happy song will also keep you in a good mood as you continue on the drive. Keep this song at the early part of your playlist though because it’s more appropriate as you are going through the hills around the Chadron State Park, where we are literally “on top of the world.”

3. “Classic” by MKTO This is another peppy song of our time that I’ve found puts almost everyone in a good mood. It’s energetic and upbeat and allows you to do the “driver’s dance,” which is my favorite kind of dancing. Plus it has that slight rap in the middle to test your skills.

4. “King of the Road” by Roger Miller This is a good song to work in after listening to all the upbeat songs.

Take a minute or 2:30 to be exact, to just listen to some old school country music and relax while you catch your breath and maybe take a drink to refresh your strained throat.

5. “Shut Up and Dance with Me” by Walk the Moon When you start to feel the stresses

This song is another perfect song that will never get old and it literally calls for you to do the “driver’s dance.” It will re-energize you and get you focused on the drive.

6. “The Fox (What Does the Fox Say?)” by Ylvis Now, I know what you are thinking. This song is over-played, obnoxious, and stupid. You’re not wrong. But this Highway 2 drive messes with you and sometimes you just need to let all the weirdness out, and this song is the perfect opportunity for that. It doesn’t matter if you actually know all the words, or if you just make random noises, you’ll feel better after listening to this song.

7. “Gangsta’s Paradise” by Coolio This is a secret favorite song of mine, but you have to wait until you have less than 2 hours left of the trip.

It’s an angry song and by this time in the trip you will be annoyed and frustrated that you still have not reached your destination.

This is a tricky song though because if you listen to this song too soon on the trip you will be angry for too long and you may overheat. But if you wait too long to play it, you will arrive at your destination in a bad mood, which isn’t fair to those you are going to visit.

8. “Carrying Your Love With Me” by George Strait I always follow “Gangsta’s Paradise” with a King George song. It doesn’t necessarily have to be this one, but I do recommend “Carrying Your Love With Me.” The King will cool you down and help you to feel light and feathery again after going “through the valley of the shadow of death.”

9. “Buffalo Dream” by Tex Ritter King George sometimes causes a dreamy effect, which causes sleepiness again. So listening to anything by Tex Ritter will definitely shock your senses back awake. Tex Ritter might not be well known in these days, especially not “Buffalo Dreams,” but it has similar effects as “The Fox.” The weirdness will need to come out again and this song offers that.

10. “I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)”

by The Proclaimers Finally, a perfect song to end on is one talking about being on the road for FOREVER. By the time you are ready for this song on your playlist you will be doing anything to survive the last few miles to your destination, just like The Proclaimers in trying to get the girl.

This playlist is only a short list of all the songs you will need to travel on Highway 2 and it might look like songs you’d never be caught listening to, but that’s why it’s perfect for this long, lonely Highway 2 drive. Nobody even has to know.
