Constitutional Court looking for justices Nalani Stewart News Editor The court is looking for justices for the spring semester. Some duties of a justice include conducting elections during the fall and spring semester, assisting in the defense of a senator, or member of a subcommittee who had a petition filed against them, apply the rules, bylaws, and Constitutional Court, and make the decision whether that senator will lose their position.

Students interested should be a full-time student, with at least a GPA of at least 2.75. Those interested in the position should contact Chief Justice Samantha Merrill.

Senate has a current budget of $24, 581.95 in unallocated funds.

“We are working on sending out an allocation information sheet,” said Vice President of Finance Lukas Klueber. “We are making sure that it has what we want it to have, and we hope this year goes well.”

AFB, a committee that is responsible for allotting the

money, that students pay each year in activities fees, to fund many of the clubs on campus, is now up and running.

Senator of Brooks Hall Trajan Garcia, freshmen of Alliance, was impeached on account of an attendance violation. Garcia did not attend Senate meetings on Oct. 9, and Oct. 23, and did not attend his constitutional court hearing on Oct. 30.

In another matter, if clubs have any seniors who are graduating in December, CAB representatives should email Vice Chair of Records Kristina McGann, so that CAB can begin to order graduation cords.

Sigma Tau Delta is hosting a Harry Potter Extravaganza in the Bordeaux/Lakota Room, at 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 11. Tenth Street Miscellany is accepting submissions from now until January 1, 2018 for their “Find Your Voice” contest. Pieces can be in both the art, and writing categories, but submissions are limited to Undergraduate students who live or are studying in a school located in Montana, North Dakota, South Dako-

Sandoz Center to be re-imagined Lydia Privett Opinion Editor The Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center, for many years, has been a tourist attraction for the area and, according to Joel Hyer, School of BEAMSS dean, is something that speaks to who we are as an institution. A new director has yet to be appointed. Instead, according to Hyer, there has been a team of people to “re-imagine” the Sandoz Center. They feel this provides collective ideas and team-thinking, rather than having one person in charge.

Currently, they’ve been taking the past few months to collect data. They are looking at things such as, who’s been visiting, when do we get the most visitors, how is the Center being used.

Brain Health Advocate and Storyteller, Kevin Hines will speak on Nov. 14, at 7 p.m. in Memorial Hall. Hines, a Golden Gate Bridge (jumper) Survivor will tell his story in hopes to promote suicide awareness, and intrigue others to “love the life we have been given.”

The Spring Daze committee is contacting bands, and continually seeking recommendations for other entertainment.

Hyer presses the comparison of the Sandoz re-imagining to five years ago when the library went under the same process. The library turned out better than anyone could have imagined according ti Hyer, and that is the same hope for the Marie Sandoz Center.

The members on the “re-imagine team” has been attending conferences regarding museums and effective ways to manage them. Hyer also assures that the people on the “re-imagine team” are passionate about the center and improving it. The team is compiled of faculty, staff, and administrators, two of whom, have been members of the Mari Sandoz Heritage Society, one of whom is a former member of it’s board of directors.

There is currently no plan for the Sandoz Center regarding what is to come of it in the near future.

CAB contemplates Spring Daze entertainment Krystal Wilson Photo Editor Vice Chair of Programming Kimberly Hernandez requested student feedback about the possible expenses for entertainment at Spring Daze.

The cost of a stage for the event is $10,000, which only includes the delivery and set up of the stage. The concern is that the cost of the stage may not be worth the price if the artist chosen does not draw a large enough crowd.

“This is a really good way to get a lot of feedback from a lot of students,” Chair Trista Schell said.

No decisions have been made yet, but CAB representatives provided their opinions and discussed alternatives to the $10,000 stage.

“Any money that you don’t, as a student body, spend

this year does roll over,” adviser Deena Kennell said. “You could be more strategic about allocating money this year to roll over next year to plan for a larger artist.”

Adviser Pat Beu introduced the new Student Activities Coordinator, Megan Bren. Bren said she was very excited to be here and getting to know the students.

Vice Chair of Finance Tierra Snyder wanted to remind students to attend Kevin Hines’ presentation about suicide awareness at 7 p.m., Tuesday Nov. 14 in Memorial Hall.

CAB is looking for one more member for the by-laws review committee to form a quorum. No voting can be done until the position is filled.

Student Government is in need of new justices. All of the current justices are graduating in December or May, so those spots need to be filled. Anyone interested in be-

ing a justice should contact Samantha Merrill. Justices cannot be members of CAB or Senate, because justices must remain unbiased at all times.

“Being a justice is a really good opportunity especially for those of that are going into criminal justice,” Schell said.

Vice Chair of Records Kristina McGann reminded CAB representatives who are still in need of graduation cords to notify CAB as soon as possible so they can be ordered.

Before closing the meeting, CAB asked representatives for ideas on door prizes for future student events.

CAB said they hoped to increase student participation at events by offering prizes that interested students. The next two free movie night will take place Nov. 12 and Dec. 10.

Foundation finds new CEO Alex Helmbrecht Director of College Relations The Chadron State Foundation selected Ben Watson, a Chadron native and Chadron State College graduate, as its new Chief Executive Officer during its Board of Directors’ meeting Oct. 21. Watson began working for the CS Foundation as its first Director of Major Gifts in 2016. He replaces Connie Rasmussen, who announced her retirement in September.

Watson, who officially begins his new duties Jan. 2, 2018, is eager to get started.

“I love Chadron State College and the Chadron community. I’ve also been fortunate to meet our wonderful alumni of this institution who are committed to creating positive outcomes for Chadron State students and faculty,” Watson said. “The Foundation and Chadron State College has benefited greatly from the leadership of Connie Rasmussen.

While great progress has been realized, the needs remain significant. I look forward to working with the Foundation Board and the stellar staff at the Foundation and CSC to meet future challenges while supporting a place we all hold dear.”

The non-profit Chadron State Foundation raises money to support Chadron State College and provides scholarship and program support for students. As of June 2017, the CS Foundation has $18.1 million in endowment funds and more than $21.5 million in assets.

Also at the Oct. 21 meeting, Marjean Terrell was named Chair of the Foundation’s Board of the Directors. Terrell, who will serve a two-year term as Chair, is excited about working alongside Watson.

“We are so fortunate to have Ben on board. He has experience from working with Connie the last few years and he is going to do a tremendous job for us,” Terrell said. “He has a great love for Chadron State College and that comes through with how he approaches his job.”

Watson hopes to increase both those amounts by focusing on the Foundation’s comprehensive campaign, Next Horizon, which aims to raise $40 million in state and private support for capital, program enhancement and scholarship endowment objectives. Two capital project initiatives in Next Horizon include building a Sports Complex and renovating Elliott Field and Don Beebe Stadium, and renovating the Math Science Building.

In addition to the capital projects, the Chadron State Foundation is working to significantly grow the endowments available to award scholarships benefiting students.

“I am always in awe of the impact that this small college in northwest Nebraska has made upon our world. Story after story from alumni expressing the profound gratitude to leaders and faculty at this institution abound when I meet with them across the country,” Watson said. “The Foundation is committed to partnering with Chadron State to meet its vision by ensuring that the facilities, scholarships and programmatic support are in line to meet student and staff needs and expectations. We have terrific alumni and it is my sincere hope they will consider focusing their philanthropy on their alma mater. This is a dynamic college and our alumni and friends have the ability to make Chadron State even stronger and more dynamic.”

Watson graduated from CSC with a bachelor’s degree in Psychology in 2001. Prior to joining the Foundation, he worked at Security First Bank as its Chief Information Officer.

Watson’s wife, Saphron is also a CSC graduate. She and Watson have three daughters.

Western Community Health Resources, a department of Chadron Community Hospital offers many services to the community and college students. They offer Family Reproductive Health Services which include pap smears, physicals, STD/HIV testing and counseling, birth control, pregnancy testing, as well as individual and community education. Services are strictly confidential and cost for services are based on income with a sliding fee schedule. The majority of college students will qualify for free or reduced fee services. Insurance can be billed for services but only with student permission.

The clinic provides condoms, which students are encouraged to access at any time, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

“With our reproductive health care services, you can access an array of birth control methods that is unique to your need,” Sherri Blome said. “And our provider who is a nurse

practitioner provides reproductive health care, education and screening on site.”

Western Community Health Resources offers WIC for college students as well.

“Our WIC program would be available for college students that are pregnant, postpartum or breastfeeding, or that have children under the age of five,” Blome said. “And WIC is a program that offers nutritional food vouchers for local grocery store use.”

WCHR offers human services programs, which are an array of behavioral health programs that are support services that people seek. One example is the Community Support program which assists those in need with “socialization, budgeting, nutrition, medical appointments, finances, employment, and housing.”

The Western Community Health Resources clinic provides immunizations for the community including Chadron State College students. More services can be found on the Western Community Health Resources website, http://www.wchr.net, and is located on 300 Shelton Street.

The search to understand FYI courses First Year Inquiry (FYI) courses have been implemented in CSC graduation requirements since 2012. According to Jim Margetts, School of Liberal Arts Dean, there have been some issues surrounding the purpose of FYI courses.

The message has not been relayed well to students about the purpose of FYI courses and why they have to take them.

They enroll in weird-sounding courses, such as, “Survival Skills 101.” Students are often times questioning the point of the class and enter it with the mindset that it is a joke.

Margetts agrees that students would be more accepting to the classes if they understood the true purpose of them.

“The idea of trying to flip the classroom a little bit, and put the student at the center of the learning environment.”

Margetts said. “They’re challenging students to start asking questions and to be able to support their theory or their proposal on using sound evidence and being able to use resources. It sort of sets the stage for all of your college career but also it hopefully sets the stage for lifelong learning.”

We believe more action needs to

be taken to get feedback from students about FYI courses. Since being appointed Margetts has taken initiative in getting student feedback.

Margetts addressed this concern about efficiently obtaining feedback by describing a new assessment program.

“Starting this semester, we’re piloting a new assessment program for FYI and Capstone classes where there’s a rubric that we’re testing right now,” Margetts said. “It’s been approved by the Essential Studies Committee that asks whether the students have gained the skills that are outlined in the original documentation of what FYI’s are supposed to be.”

Some of the FYI courses have been found to be more rigorous than others, and we believe that that needs to be addressed. Margetts acknowledged that concern, “We recognize that there are still inequities in the FYIs across campus.” Margetts said. “One of the things that the Essential Studies Committee has decided to do is work on assessment and making sure we’re offering the right classes in the summer and in the fall and spring. Next semester we’ve reserved to doing what we

call recertification.”

The recertification will entail all professors who are teaching an FYI course to go through a process to recertify them.

This will verify that the course still meets the expectations of what the purpose of an FYI course is.

It will result in some changes and hopes to make sure all faculty are on the same page of the rigor expected of FYI courses.

In 2012, when the Essential Studies Committee implemented FYI courses, there were three students represented on the committee, appointed by Student Senate. Since 2012, Margetts stated there has not been a prominent student presence in that committee.

Margetts encourages students, if they feel there is an issue, to speak up. There is still a place reserved for students on that committee.

We believe if students actively take advantage of the opportunities given to provide course feedback and are informed as to the purpose of FYI courses, faculty and students have the potential to get the most out of the courses.

Watch ‘Star Wars’ the right way Brianna Wilson Reporter It’s Nerd Night and you and your friend want to have a “Star Wars” marathon but you guys can’t agree on which movie to start. There are two kinds of people in the world: those that start chronologically on “Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace” and those that start with the movie that was released first, “Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope.”

“A New Hope” was released in 1977.

Fun fact: according to the Internet Movie Database, the original movie was titled just “Star Wars.” George Lucas was so certain the film was going to be a bust, he didn’t even attend the premier. Instead, he went on vacation to Hawaii with Stephen Spielberg. “Episode IV – A New Hope” wasn’t added until after the movie was released.

However, George Lucas has said he always had the ideas of episodes one through three, even when “A New Hope” was released. So my question is, “Why didn’t he start with ‘A Phantom Menace?’” He likely had a reason for starting with Luke’s story instead of Anakin’s.

Through my searching, I haven’t been able to find his reason for starting with Luke. However, speaking from an author’s perspective, he likely did have a reason for starting where he did. He also likely had a reason for naming the mov-

ies the way he did, instead of labeling “The Phantom Menace” and the two following it as prequels.

George Lucas wouldn’t be the first person to produce something and then follow it later with a prequel or prequels.

Authors do it all the time. One of the most famous?

C.S. Lewis.

Chronologically, “The Magician’s Nephew” comes before “The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe.” However, “The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe,” was published first. C.S. Lewis didn’t publish “The Magician’s Nephew” until five years later. There was a reason for this; a lot of the things in “The Magician’s Nephew” don’t make sense if you haven’t read “The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe.”

Something else to consider: “The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe” was made into a movie first. They haven’t even made a movie of “The Magician’s Nephew.”

The “Underworld” series functions the same way. Most of the explanations about vampires and lycans occur in “Underworld.” However, chronologically, “Underworld: Rise of the Lycans” happens first. But if you watch that first, you’re missing out on a lot of the crucial information that you receive in “Underworld.”

Authors don’t explain things as well in a prequel because you’re expected to already know the basics of the world’s specifics since they were already explained in the original series.

Journaling is important Nalani Stewart News Editor When I was a kid, I had a secret diary. I wrote down everything. I wrote what I couldn’t say, what I wanted to say, and what was better left unsaid. I made up stories, wrote poetry, and drew hearts around every crush I ever had.

My diary was a place that I could get away and not have to worry about the world around me. As I got older, I ditched my diary for a journal which served the same purpose but just sounded a lot cooler. Now, I journal during my free time and I would encourage everyone to do so as well.

Journaling can be beneficial to everyone, despite the stereotypes surrounding it. Some people think that it is stupid, but trust me, it is not at all. Not only has it been found that journaling is good for your mental health, but it allows you to get all of your thoughts down on paper. You can plan out your day, write out what you are going to say during your presentation, and even write down your fears.

There is no judgment in your journal. No one Is going to tell you what you can, and cannot say, and you can be your true self. Journaling can also help to boost your memory. If you write things down, and write all of the time, you are more likely to remember them.

It also helps with the healing process. You can write down all of your feelings, which can help you to work through them.

Journaling can also be a stress reliever. Instead of blowing up on others about things you can’t control, you can sort out your emotions on paper. Writing can also push creativity. There are low stakes in your journal, and you don’t have anyone to impress. You are always right, and no one can tell you anything different when you write in your journal. And not only that, how cool would will it be when future people of America read your journal? You will be able to live on in your journal for years to come.

Whether it’s in the morning, or at night, in a notebook, or on the computer, journal as much as you can.

If you see something, write it down. If you miss someone, write them a letter in your journal. Trust me, you will thank yourself for it later.

It’s the same with George Lucas. There’s a reason “A New Hope” was created before “The Phantom Menace.” Just because you know the stories and the specifics now, doesn’t mean you should be let off the hook.

For those who are just starting the series, I always say they should start with “A New Hope” and watch Luke’s story before going back and learning about Anakin’s story.

That’s the way my father showed me the movies and that’s the way George Lucas released the movies, therefore, it’s pretty safe to assume that’s the way he intended for them to be watched.

Just because you know the storyline now and don’t need the explanations that come in the original series, doesn’t mean you should be able to just cast aside what the author or director had in mind when they were telling the story.

Keep those things in mind when you go to decide the order in which you and your friend intend to watch your “Star Wars” marathon on Nerd Night.

Luke’s story came first.

And then Anakin’s.

And now they’re starting on Rey’s.

But none of the new things change the fact that Luke still came first.

ROAD RAID Eagles take sting from Yellowjackets, win 35-14 Preston Goehring Managing Editor Black Hills State University, Spearfish, South Dakota, had no answer for the powerful rushing attack of Derek Jackson, senior of Pueblo West, Colorado, in CSC’s win over the Yellowjackets, 35-14.

Jackson finished with 173 yards and two touchdowns.

He was the work horse of the game, carrying the ball 39 times, averaging a little more than four yards per try. He moved into fifth all-time in the CSC record books for career yards, with 3,059.

Women’s basketball begins season at UW Ashley Jackson Reporter This season the CSC women’s basketball team is focusing on getting better and gaining experience.

The Eagles have 11 new players coming into the 2017-2018 season, including seven freshmen.

The Eagles lost to the University of Wyoming Cowgirls in Laramie, Wyoming, at their exhibition game on Friday, 77-25.

Janet Raymer is starting her second season as head coach of the Eagles. The Eagles had a 7-18 overall record last season, 7-15 in the RMAC. Raymer expects all of her players to stand out.

“I could go through this whole team and say they’re going to do good things for us,” Raymer said.

One of the Eagles biggest strengths this season is support.

Each player is excited for the others success, according to Raymer.

The Eagles are also focusing on having the right attitude and always working hard throughout the season. They’re working on having a flawless defense and moving the ball on offense.

The Eagles hope to show their improvement at their first regular season games this weekend.

This season at women’s basketball home games, the first 100 people in the door will be entered into a drawing to win a prize. The prizes will alternate each night, and the winner will be drawn after the first quarter.

The Eagles are at home this weekend. They will take on Texas A&M International University, Laredo, Friday and Texas A&M University-Kingsville, Saturday.

WRESTLING In the quarter final round, Karst took down unattached wrestler Andrew Gomez, winning by fall during the second period. In the semifinal round Karst fell to Colorado School of Mines’ Taylor Gambill, redshirt freshman of Belle Chasse, Louisiana, in 42 seconds in the first period. Gambill moved on to the final round, but fell to Northeastern Junior College’s Sam Eckhart, freshman of Parma, Idaho.

Karst faced Gomez for a second time in the consolation finals, beating him 6-5, securing third place in the bracket.

“Joe Ritzen and Chance Karst showed a ton of heart and grit and had great days for us. I am extremely excited to build our program around these guys,” Head Wrestling Coach Brett Hunter said. “We just need to keep approaching every day with the right attitude and I think we can find some success this year.”

In the Elite division, Joshua Miller, redshirt junior of Bennett, Colorado, also went 2-2 in the 141-pound weight class.

“We are very young and it showed this weekend, but we really like this group of guys,” Hunter said.

CSC finished 11 in team standing in both Amateur division with 12.5 points and the Elite division with 5 points.

The team’s Black and Cardinal Classic is at 6 p.m. tonight in the Chicoine Center.

Women 9th, men 15th at Regional Championships Preston Goehring Managing Editor The women’s cross country team placed ninth at the NCAA DII South Central Regional Championships Saturday, while the men’s team finished 15th in Canyon, Texas.

There were 27 teams competing in the women’s race and 28 in the men’s.

Three Colorado schools dominated the championships. Adams State University, Alamosa, Colorado; Colorado School of Mines, Golden; and Western State Colorado University, Gunnison, placed in the top three for both races.

Alyse Henry, sophomore of Rock Springs, Wyoming, led the CSC women in the 6K race, placing 30th of the 183 individual runners, with a time of 22 minutes, 35.73 seconds. Nicky Banzhaf, senior of Chadron, finished nine places behind Henry, with a time of 22:55.04.

Julia Eskelson, freshman of Meeker, Colorado, and Taylor Allison, senior of Gordon, finished in 64th and 65th, respectively. Eskelson’s time was 23:35.53, Allison finished right behind her with a

time of 23:35.53.

CSC is right on the edge of the RMAC tournament, coming at the No. 9 spot, right behind Black Hills State, despite beating them twice this season.

The conference’s top eight teams earn a bid to the postseason.

Students gathered in The Pit, Thursday night for the Doubles Pool Tournament, with a new duo that surprised the crowd with the championship.

The tournament was won by Ben Obanion, 23, senior of Boulder, Colorado, and his partner Dean Michel, 20, junior of Rawlins, Wyoming.

“Exhilarated,” Obanion said, describing how he felt after the last game.

Obanion considers pool to be one of his hobbies.

“I play three to four days a week,” Obanion said. He has participated in the past two doubles tournaments and finally won on his third attempt.

“It feels great,” Michel said after taking the title with his partner.

They both walked away with a premium Cuetec 5.5.1 pool stick.

Jeff Olly, 20, sophomore of Denver, and Nathan Baca, 20, junior of Los Angeles, finished in second place.

“I feel like we came a long way.

At the end of the day, we played our hearts out and had fun,” Baca said, surprised to have been in the final round.

“We took an ‘L,’ but we still made it to the championship,” Olly said, proud of how far his team made it.

The doubles tour-

nament was played in single elimination format. The tournament drew out 24 teams and over 80 students that gathered in the student center. This tournament is one of two that The Pit holds each semester, the other being a singles tournament.

This tournament surprised a lot of the teams playing and the students in the crowd. Many teams expected to make it to the final four were eliminated early. Kyle McClaren, 22, junior of New Underwood, South Dakota, won the past two doubles tournaments he was in, but was eliminated in the second round this time.

“It’s definitely a smaller tournament than before, but the competition is just as good,” McClaren said.

McClaren joined the crowds after being eliminated to see who would take his place as champion.

Twins, Lukas and Konery Klueber, 19, sophomores of Rapid City, South Dakota, were also eliminated

early in the tournament. This was another team hopeful to make it to the end, but came up short.

“We had a good turnout. Ultimately it comes down to you versus the tables and sometimes the balls fall in your favor and sometimes they don’t. I’m happy to see some new faces in the competition,” Konery said.

Eli Garza, 22, junior of Mission, Texas, is in charge of The Pit activities.

“The Pit encourages competitive play, and this pool tournament acts like a beacon for it,” Garza said.

“The prizes usually consist of high end pool gear, to encourage more play.”

The Pit hosts many events that students can compete in. The next Pit event is the cultural dance tonight at 9 p.m. The Pit is working with the International Club to host a dance with music from around the world and encourages students to wear their cultural clothing.

Aniston and Sandler deliver comedy gold Ashley Jackson Reporter Jennifer Aniston is one of the best actresses of our time and I will watch any movie or show that she is in. Back in 2011, when I heard that she was going to star in a movie with Adam Sandler, I was not immediately thrilled.

I normally don’t like Adam Sandler in movies, but “Just Go With It” is one of the best romantic comedies I have seen in a long time.

Aniston and Sandler were a perfect fit for their respective roles, Katherine and Danny.

The two characters have been co-workers for a long time and are very close with each other.

This movie is their love story.

Brooklyn Decker and Nick Swardson both played supporting characters and were great additions to the cast. Decker played the younger girlfriend of Sandler, Palmer, that he spends the majority of the movie trying to impress. Swardson plays the cousin, Eddie, the

comedic relief in the movie and most of his jokes are delivered well and easily received.

Bailee Madison and Griffin Gluck play Aniston’s kids, Maggie and Michael. The two cause trouble throughout the movie, but also add a little bit of sensitivity to the comedy based movie.

Nicole Kidman plays a somewhat villain, Devlin Adams, that Aniston competes with throughout the movie. Kidman and Aniston working together in a movie is a combination I never knew I needed until I watched them together.

Dennis Dugan has directed other Sandler movies and knows how to use Sandler’s humor to make the best movie possible. Dugan created a funny and romantic movie with the star power of Aniston, Sandler and Kidman.

“Just Go With It” is filled with funny one-liners, a few crude jokes, and a happy ending that all romantic comedies need. I have watched this movie probably 20 times since it has been released and still laugh at all of the jokes. This movie is a hit in its own time and will become a classic as the years go on.

Project Strive decorates cookies Kylee Odenbach Reporter Project Strive students celebrated the Cookie Monster’s birthday by decorating cookies on Nov. 2, 2017. Twenty-five students attended the event in the Project Strive Living Room at 11 a.m., Thursday.

Amanda Lewin, adviser of Project Strive, said, “We decided to decorate cookies today because of the Cookie Monster’s birthday, but also so students can relieve some stress. It’s also a way that the Project Strive students can connect with one another.”

“Project Strive offers good support to us and it’s nice to participate in something fun,” Jennifer Campos, 18, freshman of Alliance, said.

The cookie-decorating event also included competitive contests for the students. The four cookie contests at the event were; the best use of color, the most original, the most abstract, and the most appetizing. Jessy Bale, 20, junior of Hermosa, South Dakota, won the most original cookie contest with a standing apple cookie that she designed.

Gabi Perez, 22, senior of Sioux City, Iowa, said, “Decorating cookies while it’s snowing really gets me in the mood for Christmas.”

The Galaxy Series “Western Night” brought 103 students and members of the community to Memorial Hall, Tuesday.

Abby Maginnis, of Whitman, and her family performed during the event as the Carr Family Cow-

“I haven’t showcased many songs that I have written yet,” Maginnis said. “[My writing is] mostly from [my] life experiences. Honestly, ranching is a lot of the inspiration.”

Maginnis performed with her sister, her brother and her two parents.

She said she has been performing since she was little and her father started the kids on playing the fiddle

when they turned six.

Maginnis also introduced the two featured poets for the night, Marty Blocker and R.P. Smith.

Blocker has been featured on the cover of the Cowboy Magazine. He was also the featured artist at the 2010 National Cowboy Poetry Gathering in Elko, Nevada. Smith is a local cowboy who travels and loves to entertain with his family.

CSC choirs excel in first performance of the year Yen Nguyen Reporter CSC Concert Choir and Community Chorus performed their first concert of the year at Chadron Arts Center at 3 p.m., Sunday.

About 70 people filled up the arts center. Under the direction of Una Taylor, professor of music, and Joel Schreuder, professor of music, the concert went smoothly. They gave audiences a concert of diverse music, from traditional to modern choral music.

The Community Chorus opened the concert with “Let Their Celestial Concerts All Unite,” by George Frideric Handel. In the “Neighbors’ Chorus,” from La Jolie Parfumeuse, the singers presented and performed in the song’s context ,featuring Jarrod Paul as “The Neighbor.”

“It’s supposed to be a cute song from the opera just because there’s a couple broken up and all those nosy neighbors want to know what’s happening with them,” said Cheyanna Thompson, 23, senior of Frederick, Colorado. “Some of the pieces are more challenging than others, but they are pretty interesting.”

The Community Chorus ended their section with the

meaningful song “Make Them Hear You,” from Ragtime by Stephen Flaherty.

The CSC Concert Choir impressed audiences with skillful and challenging pieces. They performed the harmony beautifully and used their voices to complement each other. The performers also had a great time performing their music.

Kelvana Demeritte, 17, freshman of Nassau, New Providence in the Bahamas, said she enjoyed singing a Latin music, “Ubi Caritas,” by Ola Gjeilo. She said she was glad to perform challenging music before graduation.
