Senate approves the powwow budget Nalani Stewart News Editor Student Senate allocated $800 towards the budget for the CSC Native American Club powwow, Saturday Nov. 18, 2017. The breakdown of the budget consisted of $250 for the Master of Ceremonies, $250 for the Arena Director, and $350 for the Mighty Arrows host drum.

Senate also allocated $340 toward the purchase of customized stoles for ten graduating senators.

“The stoles will say Student Government down one side, and the position [of the Senator] on the other,” Vice President Johnathan Sayloune said.

Student Senate also allocated $250 for the shipping cost of boxes for the Operation Shoe-Box Charity, only half of the requested amount. Senate explained that they would allocate half of

the money asked for by Andrew Johnson, and requested that CAB ask clubs to donate the rest of the money.

Senate has a current budget of $24,581.95 in unallocated funds.

The Constitutional Court is looking for justices for the spring semester. Some duties of a Justice include conducting elections during the fall and spring semester, apply the rules, bylaws, and Constitutional Court.

“There’s been some confusion lately, and I just want to be very clear,” said Chief Justice Samantha Merrill. “Justices are neutral parties, and they do not assist in anyway in the defense or the prosecution of Senators. They are a neutral party which Senators are brought before, and we decided based on the information to presented to us. We do not assist in any way, shape, or form.”

Students interested must be a full-time student, with a minimum GPA of 2.75. Those interested in the position should contact Merrill.

Annual fundraiser to support student scholarships Lydia Privett Opinion Editor Giving Tuesday is a global day of giving powered by social media and collaboration. #GivingTuesday at CSC will be focused on raising money for student scholarships to support CSC students and programs. It will also be focused upon educating students, faculty, and the community about the positive effect philanthropy has.

With the feedback received from last weeks CAB meeting, the Spring Daze Committee has decided not to have a concert for entertainment.

“Our Saturday looks like we are going to hire a professional DJ,” Sayloune said. “We are going to try to make it one of the event style dances on campus.”

The Spring Daze theme is 90s nostalgia, and the committee is opening up a T-Shirt design contest to the students.

In another matter, Brain Health Advocate and Storyteller, Kevin Hines spoke on Tuesday, at 7 p.m. in Memorial Hall. Hines, a Golden Gate Bridge (jumper) Survivor told his story in hopes to promote suicide awareness, and intrigue others to “love the life we have been given.”

The Free Movie Night on Sunday had a major turnout with 202 students attending. The next free movie night is Dec. 10. Students should continue to watch CAB’s Facebook and Twitter pages for the release of the movie titles.

BRIEFS Haynes memorial scheduled for tonight

The event will teach students how to give back to the school and make a difference in the community. The Chadron State Foundation will give over $429,000 to CSC students in scholarships next year. #GivingTuesday is just another way the foundation raises money to fund these scholarships. The foundation will also be educating students and the community about The Next Horizon campaign is another program raising money for student scholarships with a goal of $40 million.

The event will have cards to be signed by students that will be sent to CSC alumni and friends as a way to show our appreciation for the money they donate that have made CSC scholarships possible.

A memorial service to honor former faculty member, Janice Haynes, is scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 16, at 7 p.m. at the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center. The service is open to the public. Individuals are invited to share their talents to honor the life of Haynes, who died Oct. 11, 2017.

2018 CSC Education Association Scholarship Two $500 scholarships to be awarded for the Spring 2018 semester. Applications are due to Tracy Nobiling, professor of Justice Studies, Admin 302, by 4 p.m., Friday, December 1st. A crew from Fuller Construction tears down the Con Marshall Press Box Wednesday afternoon, beginning the process of renovating the Sports Complex.

Stadium renovations underway Construction starts on multi-million dollar Sports Complex Preston Goehring Managing Editor Demolition began on Don Beebe Stadium, Con Marshall Press Box, and Elliott Field, this week, starting the renovation of the new Sports Complex.

Fuller Construction began the process Monday. The total budget for the Sports Complex will cost $11.1 million in total, with the football stadium renovations, and the addition of the outdoor track in the future.

The new football field and stadium is a part of the first phase of the project, and is scheduled to be completed by the 2018 football season. Phase two of the project includes adding an outdoor track to the complex.

Elliott Field and Don Beebe Stadium were constructed in 1929, and Con Marshall Press Box was added in 1998, and have shown signs of their age. In 2014, Hermanson Egge Engineering, Rapid City, South Dakota, inspected the facility and revealed that the structural integrity in the central stand was failing.

The improvements include a complete overhaul of the stadium and field, moving the entire complex farther to the south. The stadium will become a two-level facility, with the first level including larger concessions stands, restrooms, and expanded seating for spectators.

The second level will be the new and improved Con Marshall Press Box, with expanded space for media, and new technology for better broadcast capabilities.

CAB reinstates Native American club Nalani Stewart News Editor Native American club is now up and running.

“They put in an appeal for their inactive club status, and so they have been officially been put back on the roster,” CAB Chair Trista Schell said, “They are now recognized as a club, which is great.”

The Spring Daze Committee is looking for T-shirt designs. The theme of Spring Daze is Nostalgic 90s.

“They are opening it up to the community, and students,” Schell said. “So, if you guys have a knack for design, and would like to draw, or have some ideas you can send them to the Spring Daze Committee.”

Schell reminded students of the polices for clubs who want to host a dance.

“There are just some basic things,” said Schell.

“Your sponsor for your organization has to be present the entire time, and the organization is responsible for any damage, or theft that occurs at the event, whether is it done by a member of your club or not.

Illegal drug use or the unauthorized use of alcohol is not permitted on campus. The dance supervisors have to (stand) at the doors, and check ID’s.”

“Make sure that you come,” said Kimberly Hernandez, Vice Chair of Programming, “and tell your friends to come too.”

In another matter, if clubs have any seniors who are graduating in December, CAB representatives should email Vice Chair of Records Kristina McGann as soon as possible, so CAB can begin to order graduation cords.

CAB also reminded students about Kevin Hines who spoke on Nov 14, at 7 p.m. in Memorial Hall.

Lydia Privett Opinion Editor You take a cute selfie, or you find this cute picture of you laughing with a group of your friends from over the summer, and find the perfect filter.

Then you hit the daunting, “share.”

After that, it has become natural of our generation to become absorbed in watching your likes grow, seeing your phone’s lock screen light up every minute or so, notifying you of a new person who liked your post.

With nearly every post, you result with either a boost to your ego, or an utter blow. It’s something I think we’ve all experienced this day in age.

The second you hit “share”, you nervously stare at your phone waiting to see the first heart notification pop up as a form of validation.

Yes, Suzie liked my picture in less than two minutes! It must not be too ugly.

We then close Instagram, just to wait in suspense for our lock screen to light up every few minutes, likely

opening the app every ten minutes to look at the number that we feel defines us, grow.

This vicious cycle can last all day, controlling us and distracting us from the things that really matter.

Our worst nightmare can occur when a post has been posted for three hours and only 30 people have liked it.

That’s only 10 likes every hour!

What’s wrong with my picture?

This oftentimes ends with us deleting the picture to save ourselves from the anxiety-inducing hours to come.

Our self-confidence shouldn’t be placed in the hands of people double-tapping behind a screen. If we say

that numbers don’t define us weightwise, why should the number of likes we get be any different?

Of the 500 followers you have, how many of them are you actually friends with? Maybe 30? The rest are just acquaintances, and if we’re being honest, a lot of them are strangers.

Forget the threat of internet predators, most of us will let anyone follow us on Instagram in hopes of increasing the number of likes we get.

We’ve even started to put a certain amount of weight on how many followers we have.

We have turned into a generation where likes from people we hardly know determine our worth, and it’s just not right.

The monumental moments in your life are worth more than numbers on a screen. Put the phone down and spend time with people who help you to realize your self-worth, not the numbers on the screen. In the end, it doesn’t matter how many people like your picture, it matters how many people smile when they saw it.

Take 15 minutes to encourage yourself

Rachel Mitchell Columnist It’s getting to be that time of year. Finals are approaching and homework is being handed out like candy. I am one of those students who gets stressed rather easily and has a hard time finding motivation sometimes. I feel like I’m going to fail or that my work is inadequate. Sometimes I criticize myself a little too harshly.

I realized that this “self-criticism” was starting to consume how I felt and left me feeling rather miserable. I realized I’m only human and can only do so much.

But I wasn’t sure how to fix it.

I needed to find a way to get myself in a better mindset. I learned a new word that day, “self-compassion.” Self-compassion is showing kindness to yourself.

Now, I know what some of you may be thinking. “That sounds a lot like selfpity”. That’s what I thought when I first heard the term. That’s where self-criticism comes into play. Realizing that I felt like a failure and inadequate helped me realize I should show compassion to myself just like I would show compassion to a friend who had those same feelings.

I challenged myself to one week of

“self-compassion exercises.” I was rather skeptical at first because I had to take time out of my already busy day just to do this.

I decided I would get up 15 minutes before I normally do every morning. Just 15 minutes. I told myself I would make a cup of coffee, not even touch my phone, and be mindful of the day ahead and in those 15 minutes I would build myself up.

The first step was simply realizing that I was climbing a mountain. These slip ups and failures I felt were setting me up for the success I would reach at the top. Then I would say to myself “Failure is not unique.”

Everyone experiences it at one time or another. I was raised to do my very best at everything I did. When I failed, I felt like I failed both my family and myself. But that is not the case. Failing

No one has a plan, stop asking Torri Brumbaugh Lifestyles Editor I love the holiday season. I am so ready to shove my face with turkey and pie and watch Christmas movies on repeat, but I’m definitely not ready to answer the same questions my family asks every year.

I absolutely loathe the question, “What are you planning to do after college?”

The truth is: I don’t know what I want to do. In fact, a majority of college students don’t know. Not having a plan is normal and totally okay, so please stop asking. To me, college is meant for exploring different opportunities to find your strengths and weaknesses.

That time between walking into college and walking off that stage with your diploma isn’t about solidifying your five-year

plan and starting retirement. You need to make mistakes, learn about yourself, and your beliefs to get set on a path.

The pressure to be an “adult” is constantly approaching, but sadly, life happens at its own pace. You can be on track to be a teacher, then three years into the job, you may realize you hate children.

It’s okay to be confused and take your time on decisions. For exploring different opportunities to learn your strengths and weaknesses. You should find out what you like, what you don’t like, and who you are as a person.

That time spent between your first day of freshman year and you walking across a stage and get your diploma isn’t about creating a five-year plan. It should be about getting set on a path to what you want to do, even if that path doesn’t lead to a specific job.

No one knows what they want to be when they grow up. I know adults that are still trying to figure it out. So why are we stressing about it so much now?

I know people in journalism that have a business degree or people who own businesses that have an art degree. My mom graduated with a business degree, then went on to nursing school ten years later.

Life happens, and it doesn’t always go according to your fiveyear plan. To some employers, what matters is that you set out to get a degree, you put the work in, and you have a finished product.

The gist of it is that no one has a plan. Even those with plans might not follow through with them. Don’t let family members this holiday season make you feel like less for not having secured your dream job or having things figured out.

Finally, I would tell myself that it is okay to fall and fail as long as I got back up and tried my best. Two weeks later I am still doing this every morning and I cannot express the positive change I’ve experienced. I found myself getting through the day and being happy with myself.

I want to encourage you to try as finals and the stress of the holiday season is approaching to take 15 minutes out of your day to encourage yourself.

Take 15 minutes to get away from the distractions of life and tell yourself you are enough. The stress and inadequacy you are feeling are only temporary. You will be surprised how a little self-compassion can go a long way. I encourage you to treat yourself to a positive mindset.

“Stop Kiss” is roughly a two hour play with many thought provoking concepts and very human reactions to diversity. It received the GLAAD Media Award for Best New York Production. The CSC Theatre Program will be performing it for the public in Memorial Hall’s Black Box Theatre tonight through Sunday, with the show starting at 7:30 p.m. tonight through Saturday and at 2 p.m. Sunday. It’s rated for mature audiences because of language, adult concepts and partial nudity.

Diana Son, the author of the play, has called it political in reference to how politics is a way of looking at events that happen to people. But, overall, she deems the play as a love story. Not a play about homophobia or what it was like to live as a gay or lesbian person in America, but a love story.

And while some people have called it a sad one, I disagree. There are a lot worse ways the story could have ended, considering what happened and what could have happened, I think that it ended on a relatively happy note. Or a sweet one.

And I think that, overall, the thing that wins me over the most about “Stop Kiss” is that it’s real. The cast does a marvelous job of drawing the audience in and playing the parts as real people, not as people simply playing a part in a script. Additionally, it’s not a fairy tale. The characters and events are written in such a way that they are believable. They have hopes and dreams and fears.

They love things they’ve become attached to. They hate things they don’t understand.

It’s not an easy love story, but it’s a love story

The wrestling team’s annual Black and Cardinal Classic last Thursday, produced a near split among the weight classes.

The Black team won five matches to the Cardinal team’s four, but outscored the Cardinal team 20-12.

Traditionally, the meet was used to determine who would wrestle varsity, but this year, Hunter is taking a different track.

“We don’t look at it in terms of who is going to be our varsity guys,” Hunter said. We just want guys to compete under the spotlight and have the fans come watch us and look at the product.”

The Black and Cardinal Classic held nine matches between eight weight classes. Two matches ended in a fall or technical fall. The Cardinal team’s Rulon Taylor, redshirt junior of Curtis, at 285-pounds, pinned Andrew Wilson, sophomore of Albuquerque, New Mexico, at 4:58 in the second match.

The Black team’s Chance Karst, sophomore of Powell, Wyoming, in the 133-pound weight class won by a technical fall over Robert Price, freshman of Scottsbluff, 20-2. Karst is one of the two members on the team that Hunter said stand out as team leaders, the other being Joe Ritzen freshman of Chadron, in the 133-pound weight class.

“Chance Karst does all the right things on and off the mat. He is going to have a great future for us,” Hunter said.

Women’s team starts season 2-0 against Texas opponents Ashley Jackson Reporter The Chadron State women’s basketball team was victorious at home for their season opening games this weekend. The Eagles defeated the Texas A&M International, Laredo, Texas, Dustdevils on Friday 63-56. The Eagles also came out on top against the Texas A&M-Kingsville Javelinas in a close 57-56 win.

Sophomore Jessica Lovitt, of Mullen, led the team with rebounds, grabbing 10 of the 49 rebounds during Friday’s game. Dustdevils Tantashea Giger, junior of Lincoln, and Julia Hanni, junior of Uppsala, Sweden, led the Dustdevils with four rebounds each, two offensive and two defensive. The Dustdevils grabbed 37 rebounds throughout the night.

The Eagles made 10 of their 37 attempted shots in the first half against the Dustdevils, good for 27 percent from the field.

Senior Kalli Feddersen of Rawlins, Wyoming, scored 6 on 14 attempted shots, leading the team with 16 points.

The Eagles were 36 percent for shots Friday night and 70 percent from the free throw line. Jessica Harvey, freshman of Morrill, was perfect from the free throw line. The Dustdevils scored on 32.8 percent of their shots, with Giger leading all players with 21 points.

The Eagles trailed at the end of the first quarter by four. They kept up with the Dustdevils in the second quarter, behind by four at the end of the first half, 26-22.

After halftime, the Eagles came out strong and took the lead after the third quarter, scoring 15 points to the Dustdevils eight. The fourth quarter solidified the win, with the Eagles outscoring the Dustdevils, 26-22, and ending the game with a 63-56 final score.

Using the momentum from Friday night, the Eagles came out strong on Saturday against the Javelinas. The Eagles had an overall 36.2 shooting percentage to the Javelinas 35. Junior Keeley Pearce, of Adelaide, Australia, led the team with 18 points.

Men’s team drops season openers, beats UNK Preston Goehring Managing Editor The men’s basketball team struggled in its opening weekend, dropping the first two games.

The first, the Eagles battled hard, but ultimately lost to Texas A&M International University, Laredo, 72-64. Against Texas A&M University-Kingsville, CSC was on the wrong side of a big second half, losing 95-65.

Against Texas A&M International, freshman sharpshooter Dru Kuxhausen, of Scottsbluff, led in scoring with 14 points. Jordan Mills, sophomore of Alliance, and Jaisean Jackson, junior of Denver, followed closely with 13 and 12, respectively.

Michael Johnson, sophomore of Nassau, Bahamas, one of the team’s few returning players, added eight points to go along with eight rebounds. Fellow returnee Leigh Saffin, redshirt junior of Warrnambool, Australia, also snagged eight boards, and chipped in six points.

As a team, the Eagles shot 38.2 percent from the field, and made a third of long range shots.

The Dustdevils were led by Jeremy Wright, senior of Gardena, California, with 16 points, eight assists, and four steals. 12 of his points came from behind the 3-point line.

Against the Javelinas of Texas A&M-Kingsville,

the Eagles went into halftime with a slim 2-point advantage, thanks to a 21-4 run to close out the first 20 minutes, despite playing without Darius Polley, senior of Amarillo, Texas, and Saffin. Polley didn’t play all weekend due to an injury in practice. Saffin went down midway through the first half against the Javelinas, and was unable to return.

In the second half, fresh legs for the Javelinas helped them wear down CSC, going on a 25-2 run.

Kingsville never looked back, scoring 19 points in the last 4 minutes.

Although CSC struggled to score in the second half, they were still able to shoot more than 50 percent from the field and more than 42 percent from long range.

Johnson led the way, putting 15 points on the board and grabbing five rebounds. Jackson followed with another double-digit performance, adding 12. Jeremy Ruffin, junior of Chicago, and Walker Andrew, freshman of Littleton, Colorado, each added 10 points and five rebounds.

The Eagles picked up their first win against the University of Nebraska at Kearney last night, 72-69.

Kuxhausen led CSC with 22 points. Ruffin added a double-double, with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

The Eagles are hosting Bellevue University, for their home opener, Saturday, at 1 p.m. Last season the Bruins squeaked by with a win, 78-77, in Bellevue.

The Eagles turned over the ball 25 times on Saturday night, while the Javelina’s turned the ball over 19 times.

Victoria Salinas, sophomore of Corpus Christi, Texas, led the team with a shooting percentage of 44 and only one turnover.

The Javelinas were in the lead after the first half, going into the locker room with a score of 30-26. The Eagles came back in the second half and won the game with a free throw made by junior Savannah Weidaur, of Pleasant Grove, Utah.

“She (Weidaur) is a big force inside and we expect her to continue to grow and be a big threat in there and demand the ball.” Head Coach Janet Raymer said.

The Eagles are on the road this weekend in Billings, Montana, to take on Concordia University-Portland Thursday at 5 p.m. and Montana State University-Billings, Saturday at 7 p.m.

CSC will return home next week, playing in-state rival, the University of Nebraska at Kearney, Tuesday, at 5:30 p.m.

Football team loses to CSU-P, 28-6 Preston Goehring Managing Editor

The potent attack Colorado State University-Pueblo led to a 28-6 win over CSC in the final game of the 2017 season.

CSU-P has a history of being one of the biggest and toughest team in the RMAC. With the win over CSC, the ThunderWolves earned the co-championship of the conference with Colorado Mesa University, Grand Junction.

The ThunderWolves forced three turnovers, two interceptions and a fumble, to help them control the field for more than 36 minutes. Runningback Marche Dennard, junior of Phoenix, ran 25 times for 110 yards and two touchdowns.

Dennard accounted for more than half of CSU-P’s 206 total rushing yards.

The Eagle offense could only muster 226 total yards, 56 on the ground, and were kept out of the end zone by the RMAC’s best defense.

Dalton Holst, redshirt freshman of Gillette, Wyoming, threw for 141 yards. Derek Jackson, senior of Pueblo West, Colorado, led the rushing attack with 42 yards.

The only score of the game came on an interception returned for a touchdown, from Tyler Lewis, redshirt sophomore of Arvada, Colorado, halfway through the third quarter.

It was Lewis’ second defensive touchdown in as many weeks, as he returned a fumble 67 yards last week against Black Hills State University, Spearfish, South Dakota.

The Eagles brought in six individual postseason awards, one First Team, and five Second Team honors.

Travis Romsa, redshirt junior

of Burns, Wyoming, earned First Team All-RMAC, leading the offensive line that led the conference in sacks allowed.

The offensive player to earn a conference honor was Colt Foster, redshirt sophomore of Hemingford.

The tight end averaged more than 13 yards per catch and hauled in four touchdowns.

Three defensive players were honored with Second Team AllRMAC awards. Collin Eisenman, senior of Sheridan, Wyoming; Mitch Collicott, senior of McCook, and Truett Box, senior of Cheyenne Wells, Colorado, all earned the nod.

Punter Zack Kozlik, junior of Coronado, California, also earned Second Team honors.

A handful of Eagles received honorable mention for the postseason awards.

Eagles drop final 2 games BriYanna Lyon Reporter The volleyball team lost its last two games of the season on the road in Colorado this weekend, dropping their record to 10-17. The losses placed them No. 11 in the RMAC, knocking them out of the conference tournament. The top eight teams earned a bid to the tournament.

Despite the disappointing season, Aijahnae Springs, junior of Converse, Texas, found a bright spot in the team’s overall performance.

“I am very sad that our season ended so early but I am not sad the way we ended. We ended the season better then we started and that is all that matters,” Springs said. “I do know that next year will be a better year, because this season has definitely been a learning experience for all of us.”

On Friday, the team played Colorado Christian University, Lakewood, for the second time. They lost all three sets once again to the Cougars who are now seated

in the fourth spot in the conference standings. The girls played defensively ending the first set with 25-21, the second set in 25-21, and the last set 25-15.

Gaby Varela, senior of Dorado, Puerto Rico, led the team offensively with 11 kills.

Maddison Webb junior, of Loveland, Colorado, led the team in assists with 29. Emily Bruce, senior of Centerton, Arkansas, led with 25 digs.

On Saturday, the Eagles played Colorado School of Mines, Golden. They took a tough loss in all three sets again to the Orediggers who are now seated second in the conference standings. The team ended the first set taking a loss of 25-15, the second set ending in a close range of 25-23, and the last set ending with a tough score of 25-13.

Springs led the team defensively with 9 kills. Varela led the team defensively with 2 blocks, Webb added 23 assists and lastly, Bruce led the team with 15 digs.

Two Eagles earned conference honors.

Varela and Bruce were named honorable mentions to the All-RMAC list. Varela tallied 255 kills this year while Bruce added 459 digs.

The Oxfam Hunger Banquet kicked off on Monday in the Student Center. The event, hosted by the CA 239 Event Planning and Leadership course, brought the rising issue of world hunger to light.

“The purpose of the event is to show how one in nine people go to bed hungry,” Shaunda French-Collins, associate professor of Communication and Social Sciences, said. “So, it’s a way to show that poverty knows no race, no gender, and no nationality. It’s sadly, for a lot of people, just the circumstances that you are born into.”

room. On one side of the room, students, faculty and community members sat at tables covered with cloths, silverware, and glasses. Few were considered the high-income class. The middle of the room, lined with tables without cloths, silverware or glasses, housed the middle-income class. The rest of the people attending the event sat on the floor in circles, and were considered the low-income class.

Students were also encouraged to bring non-perishable donations for the Emanuel Lutheran Church Shepard’s Pantry.

“We purposefully do this event early to mid-November just because it is that time of year, with the holiday’s coming around,” French Collins said.

Those who attended the event were served food in order of their social standing. The high-income class were served first, with a salad, ice water and tea. After about 10 minutes, the middle-income

class had to stand and get their food, rice, and beans. The low-income class was the last to receive their food, a bowl of rice, and a cup of water.

“The goal of the students is to help the people in their lives, and let people see how truly fortunate we are,” French-Collins said. “Even those who say they have $20 in their bank account until the end of the month, we are still privileged to be a student. I think the point is to be mindful, and get some emotion stirring. We want the high income to feel a sense of guilt to hopefully lead them to action.”

The event yielded a high turnout, with approximately 100 students, faculties, and community members attending. One student who attended the event, Bryce Olsen, 22, senior of Buffalo, South Dakota, said, “I thought that it was a good event, and that it raised a lot of awareness for hunger in our community.”

There are moments in our lives when we realize we are not ready to be adults. Like when a car insurance provider gives you a quote for $340 a month or your bank account balance is $3.71 and your gas tank is empty. It is easy to feel alone, left out, and that your life is going nowhere.

Kelly Williams Brown has the advice on being an adult that every college student, graduate and grown adult should read if they are trying to make it on their own.

Brown’s New York Times Bestseller, “Adulting: How to Become A Grown-Up in 468 Easy(ish) Steps”, provides 468 pieces of useful advice for young adults who aren’t sure where to start. From being responsible for your own goals and actions, to learning how to properly stock a kitchen and cook something other than ramen, Brown’s book has it all.

“One of the most jolting days of adulthood comes the first time you run out of toilet paper,” Brown said.

“Toilet paper, up until this point, always just existed.”

Brown addresses many topics that we are afraid to talk about or that we don’t think other people experience.

She uses humor and personal anecdotes to pull in her audience and keep them reading until the very end.

The truth is that we all feel insufficient when it comes to making the right decisions and knowing that we are on the right track in life. Everyone makes bad choices. How we deal with those choices is what really matters. Brown tackles some big issues like money management and how to get and maintain a job. Her tips provide helpful insight into adult life for those twenty-somethings who are afraid of the challenges of adulthood.

“The vast majority of this book is full of practical, interacting-with-the-world sorts of steps—wiping your counters or breaking up with your surly boyfriend or whatever,” Brown said. “Most of being an adult is not up in your head, it’s in your actions.”

College graduation doesn’t always spark the maturity needed for adulthood. Being an adult takes work. It means cleaning your bathroom, throwing dinner parties, and not getting hurt when the world doesn’t care about you. Being an adult means acting like a grown up even when you don’t feel like one.

“The outside world only sees your outermost layer,” Brown said in step No. 87. “Thus, it is easier than it might initially seem to fake it until you make it.”

Senior art show to open Monday Torri Brumbaugh Lifestyles Editor The senior art show “Happy Accidents and Oddities” will be displayed Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. starting Nov. 20 through until Dec. 8 in Memorial Hall.

Seniors Rebecca Barger of Atkinson Brooke Nelson of Philip, South Dakota, and Tory Snyder of Pierre, South Dakota, will be featured in the show.

Pieces in the show will include assignments and other works that the seniors have worked on.

“This is the stuff we really love and that came out well,” Nelson said.

While the show includes abstract art, it also includes pieces that focus on ranch life, like landscapes and animals.

“A lot of [the show] will fit in this area’s ‘theme,’” Barger said. “There also might be something new that [the audience] should experience.”

A reception will be held on Dec. 1 from 4-6 p.m. to honor the the artwork and the three seniors before they graduate or head off to student teach.

CSC Wind Symphony presents diverse performance Yen Nguyen Reporter Campus and Community Band, along with CSC Wind Symphony, attracted students and residents to their concert Friday at the Memorial Hall auditorium.

Under the direction of Michael Knight, assistant professor of music, the concert went on smoothly and consisted two strongly connected parts.

“We try to have the two halves of the concert complement each other,” Knight said.

The campus and community band opened the night with “El Capitan” by John Philip Sousa. The march, originally composed for opera, captured the audiences’ attention.

“A great way to start the concert,” Knight said about the march.

The second piece was “Blessed Are They” from A German Requiem by Johannes Brahms. According to Knight, Brahms wrote the piece when his mother passed away and turned the requiem into a more hopeful music.

“I really liked the first two pieces. ‘El Capitan and ‘Blessed Are They’ were just really fun to play and as a ban, we created a really great sound for the composition,” Alisha Huynh, 18, freshman of Scottsbluff, said.

The Campus and Community Band brought to audiences Suite for Variety Orchestra, No. 1 by Dmitri Shostakovich including two contrast color of march and waltz. The band closed their section with “Satiric Dances”

by Norman Dello Joio.

After a short intermission, the Wind Symphony took over the stage for their performances starting off with “December Dance” by Andrew Boysen, Jr., which resembled the “Satiric Dances” in the previous section.

Following up was “Blithe Bells” by Percy Grainger when audiences heard the transformation of the melody harmonically.

The symphony stunned audiences with the wide variety of melody in “Suite of Old American Dances”

by Robert Russell Bennett, consisting of “Cakewalk,” “Schottische,” Western One Step,” “Wallflower Waltz,” and “Rag.” The concert concluded with “The Chimes of Liberty”

by Edwin Franko Goldman.

Natsuki Sato, 22, senior of Oita-shi, Japan, said they focused and played best in the concert out of all the practice sections.

“Everyone can be proud of what they did tonight,” Knight said.

The next event is Jazz band and vocal Jazz, Dec. 5 at 7:00 p.m. at the Memorial Hall auditorium.

Suicide Survivor Kevin Hines inspires students Torri Brumbaugh Lifestyles Editor

Suicide survivor, author, filmmaker, and storyteller, Kevin Hines brings his inspirational speech about mental illness and substance abuse to CSC, Tuesday at Memorial Hall.

Kevin Hines, a speaker, published author and filmmaker, inspired his audience with his firsthand experience of substance abuse and mental illness, Tuesday at Memorial Hall.

Hines was born to two people who suffered from manic depression. To cope, his parents turned to drugs and alcohol while neglecting him and his brother, who were both infants. After bouncing from home to home in the foster care system and losing his brother to a strain of bronchitis, Hines was finally adopted by Patrick and Debbie Hines.

Although Debbie initially went into the transitional home where Hines was staying in search of a little girl, the Hines family took Kevin in at the age of nine months.

There, Hines lived with an adopted brother and an adopted sister.

Though Hines thought he was “lucky to have it all” as part of the Hines family, mental illness eventually caught up with him from past trauma and genetics.

In high school, Hines saw his first symptom of his bipolar disorder: paranoia. He began to hear voices in his head. Eventually, the voices in his head convinced him to kill himself.

“Suicide is not meant for anyone, even though depression deceits us into it being so,” Hines said.

On Sept. 24, 2000, Hines wrote a goodbye note to his loved ones. The next day, his father dropped him off at his community college where Hines dropped nine of his 12 credits.

Hines took a bus to the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. On the ride there, he was obviously upset, yet no one said a word to him.

“If we are nothing else on this green planet, we are one thing: our brother’s and sister’s keepers,” Hines said. He told the audience to reach out to those they love or even strangers on the street. If one person had asked Hines how he was, he vowed he wouldn’t jump. Yet no one did.

Hines catapulted himself of the Golden Gate Bridge and fell 220 feet, or 25 stories, at 75 miles per hour for four seconds. The moment his hands left the railing, he felt instant regret.

Miraculously, Hines survived his fall. He shattered part of his leg and was two millimeters away from severing his spine. A sea lion came to his aid and kept him afloat while the Coast Guard came.

One of the members of the Coast Guard reminded Hines of his luck by saying, “We have pulled 57 dead bodies out of these waters, and only one live one.”

With a new will to live, Hines recovered from his fall.

He struggled with his mental illness and has gone through seven stays in the psych ward since his attempted suicide.

While in the psych ward, he met his future wife.

After finishing telling his love story, he said, “Just because you’re in pain today, doesn’t mean you aren’t gonna have a beautiful tomorrow.”

Hines left his audience with the inspiring thought, “Your pain matters because you do.” He encouraged people to address their pain instead of burying it.

The speaker continues to tell his story and inspire others, especially with his documentary, “The Ripple Effect,” and on tour to various schools.

Sigma Tau Delta hosts Harry Potter Extravaganza Yen Nguyen Reporter Sigma Tau Delta held Harry Potter Extravaganza Saturday at Bordeaux room in the Student Center to raise funds for the club and DOVES program.

According to Lydia Privett, 19, sophomore of Wahoo, the event took donation like shampoo, conditioner, plastic-ware, soap, to support DOVES. In return, donors got tickets to participate in the games, and buy “magical stuffs.” One item equaled one ticket to the raffle. They could also buy tickets starting with 5 cents per ticket at the Gringotts Bank booth.

dents and students to come and dress up like the series’ characters. People felt like they were in the magic world right from the entrance decorated like Platform 9 ¾. They dressed up as Hogwarts students and house elves.

People walked to the Great Hall booth so they could figure out what house they were in. Participants were quickly interested in the famous Butterbeer at the Three Broomsticks. The Ollivander’s Wands booth caught people’s attention for displaying magical wands and other Harry Potter souvenirs like pins, scarfs.

The Chocolate Frog and Fizzing Whizbees were also popular.

“All these items, I didn’t think they’re gonna bring those actual stuff,” Natsuki Sato, 22, senior of Oita-shi, Japan, said, “I’m surprised!” Sato and her friend both received wands matching their clothes’ color.

“It’s been really fun. My children are really having a good time. So far, we’ve got some chocolate frogs and some But-

terbeer. My kids are interested in wands, and I’d like a pumpkin pasty” Millie Butler, 30, residents of Crawford said. “And we’re gonna play Quidditch,” she added.

The events really satisfied true Harry Potter fans.

“I love Harry Potter so much. I’ve read all the books. I’ve seen all the movies.

I’ve read and done anything Harry Potter. It’s really fun. I got to eat some great fun and play some awesome games,” Paige Carattini, 16, students of Chadron High School said. She won two random Harry Potter figurines and a $20 Pizza Hut gift card.

“We really didn’t know how many to expect but this is definitely more than we’re expecting. It turns out being great so far,” Privett said.

The Harry Potter themed event came up with everyone’s expectation and ended up with many generous donations to the club and DOVES program.
