In a year that seemed to drag on, the 2020 presidential election finally arrived. On Nov. 3, people across the United States started watching as the numbers came in and electoral votes were won.

However, by the end of the day Tuesday, a clear winner had yet to be called.

Now, election officials in key states are scrambling to count the remaining votes that will decide the next president. Nevada, Arizona, Alaska, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and Georgia remained too close to call at press time Wednesday.

Senate weighs site cost  By Sullivan Jones Reporter

One more week.

That’s all the longer Student Senate President Lily Umeta wants to spend deliberating an $8,500 funding request for CSC’s You@CSC website which has been discussed at two previous senate meetings before continued discussion at Monday’s senate meeting.

“I don’t want us to make a decision without thinking about every aspect of it,” Umeta said, “yes, it’s a lot of money; a lot of people may not be using it at this time, but also we need some kind of way to reach out to students on campus and have this discussion about mental health.”

“Cost is definitely a factor and obviously we want to be cost effective,” said Trustee Konery Klueber, “but think less about the money right now and more about what your intent is and what your goal behind this resource is.”

Other senators said their constituents had never used or didn’t know what You@CSC was,

and that they want to spend money on something students will use. So, when president Umeta pressed senate about if its concern lay with student use or the funding amount, EHPCPSW Senator Cheyenne Ryan responded.

“I think they go hand in hand,” Ryan said, “If you aren’t having people use it, you’re wasting your money.”

In a separate matter, school library hour concerns were raised by Edna senator Laura Clay.

“Something that was brought to my attention is that the library is not open on Saturdays and people would like that to be changed,” Clay Said.

In addition, Senate faculty adviser Dr. Kurt Kinbacher recalled years ago student government circulated a petition to open, without success, the library on Saturdays.

“I think it’s a reasonable request,” he said.

Wind Symphony and band to perform Friday Chadron State Colleges Music program presents Wind Symphony and Community Band on Friday, Nov 6. in Memorial Hall’s auditorium, at 7 p.m. Both students and community band members are set to play a series of classical music pieces.

The CSC Community Symphonic Band will open the program with a few

musical pieces like “Impact”, “Kentucky 1800”, “Heavens Light” and a few other well-know pieces. A transition to the harmonious wind instruments will then follow with musical classics from the many different wind instruments, performing pieces like “Infinite Hope” and “American Barndance” with a few other fan favorites.

Euphoric 2020 to premier Monday Graduating art students are hosting their biannual art exhibit in Memorial Hall on Monday, Nov. 9 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The show’s title “Euphoric” was thought of by the senior students who were influenced by Empedocles, a fifth century Greek philosopher.

Items on display will be graphic design creations, ceramic pieces, creative drawings, self-portraits, and sculptures.

The Guardian reported several hundred protesters carrying signs, chanting, and dancing gathered in the Black Lives Matter Plaza in Washington Tuesday night to watch the vote count. There was a small scuffle between some of the protestors and police. Four people were arrested.

Trump’s campaign filed lawsuits in Pennsylvania and Michigan Wednesday to halt the vote counting.

In a statement posted Wednesday on Trump’s official website, his campaign manager Bill Stepien said that the campaign “has not been provided with meaningful access to numerous counting locations to observe the opening of ballots and the counting process, as guaranteed by Michigan law.”

Trump supporters gathered in the TCF Center in Detroit chanting “Stop the count!” at election officials in support of this claim.

With 50.3% of the vote, the AP called Michigan for Biden Wednesday afternoon.

Meanwhile in Wisconsin, a state the AP called for Biden, the Trump campaign also called for a recount. In a second statement Wednesday, Stepien claimed “irregularities in several Wisconsin counties.”

However, state poll observers have not reported any voter fraud, the AP reported.

The path to the presidency is narrow for both candidates at press time Wednesday night, with Vice President Joe Biden receiving 264 electoral votes and President Donald Trump receiving 214. Biden six electoral votes short of winning the election.

Despite the uncertainty, both candidates seem hopeful about winning.

Trump called premature victory in several undecided states and falsely claimed that he had won the election in an early morning press conference Wednesday, the Associated Press reported.

“As far as I’m concerned, we’ve already won,” Trump said, per The Washington Post.

He called the inconclusive election results a “major fraud on our nation” and said he would ask the Supreme Court to weigh in on it, the AP reported.

Biden said in a Wednesday afternoon press conference that he was expecting to win the election, though he didn’t declare victory.

“When the count is finished, we believe we will be the winners,” Biden said. He told his supporters to “be patient” while waiting for every vote to be counted, the AP said in several reports.

Students face burnout during fall term  By Mackenzie Dahlberg Reporter

Students enrolled in this semester received an email May 26 regarding how State Colleges planned to welcome students back for the fall semester. Deciding on in-person format, there were several changes to the academic calendar, including final exam week being moved to Nov. 23-25.

With a shortened schedule and fluctuating COVID-19 cases, many students and professors are feeling the strain of the semester whether it’s the pandemic, the course work, or a mix of the two.

“This time during the semester is always stressful for me,” Arianna Anderson, 20, junior of Newcastle, Wyoming, said. “However, this year adds an even more burdensome task of applying for the Professional Social Work Program which just adds to the list of things I need to do. I haven’t had a chance to breath and relax in 10 weeks.”

Anderson said she misses the amount of

Hub events and Pit dances that the campus held before COVID-19. She also said the semester was better before COVID-19 and though the semester is shorter time to relax and recuperate would help.Bbecause of the lack of break Anderson said she feels burnt out.

Even though upperclassmen have previous semesters to look back on, freshman are struggling just as much, if not more due to this semester being their first experience with college.

“I am so thankful to be on campus for my first semester and have all my classes in-person because a lot of schools are not that lucky,” Creighton Harrington, 18, freshman of Loup City said, “Intramural sports are also super fun to be able to play. I felt like COVID-19 made it hard to get to know people on campus and have events to go to, but the RLA has done a great job with having some events.”

Harrington said that starting the semester, so we don’t have to come back after Thanksgiving makes sense because of traveling and meeting up with family. The pace of classes seem rushed because of the shortened schedule, according to Harrington.

“It is a little overwhelming for the pace of classes and the lack of break though, especially

as you adjust as a freshman,” She said. “A midterm break definitely would have been nice, but the end of semester is not too far away which will give a long break for us all.”

COVID-19 regulations caused additional stress for students on-campus with possible classroom changes, on top of the usual stress of a semester. For online learning, it led to extra worry about being unable to continue their education.

“With the pandemic and my distance from campus, I was really worried that I wouldn’t be able to take any classes,” Ashtyn Blacksheep, 27, junior of Ditch Creek, South Dakota, said.

“Luckily, I have the best academic adviser and she helped me get into classes I could attend remotely. It means so much for me to keep the press on my degree and graduate as intended without having to pause.”

Blacksheep said she feels stressed out because many classes don’t have regular structures, which leads to not have the same detailed course-work schedule. Blacksheep also said it would be preferred to have a semester with a break scheduled in the middle, especially since she uses the break to help her efforts on big assignments.

The Social Sciences Club on campus is hosting an election contest in which students are predicting the outcome of the 2020 Presidential election. The contest winner will be awarded a new Xbox Series S courtesy of the club.

Justin Curtis, assistant professor of political science, said, “Winning the presidency is much more complicated than just whoever gets the most votes wins.

So this is an opportunity to help students understand how that works.”

Students predicted the overall winner of the election between Biden or Trump, and then go through all 51 states in the electoral college (plus the District of Columbia).

Curtis said the goal of the contest was to provide a teaching opportunity and to allow students to have fun while learning.

“Hopefully students have a better sense of how that works now,” Curtis said.

He said that contest ballots were handed out in the student center and that all students could participate. Most of the ballots received came from Social Sciences students.

The contest ballots were due October 30. Curtis said that with some states voting early, it was important to get ballots back ahead of the election to mitigate any cheating or easy predictions.

He said that the winner will be announced after the Presidency is announced.

“Hopefully this week,” Curtis said, “We’re optimistic, but we will see.”

Stealing newspapers is a crime Recently, The Eagle has dealt with one or more individuals stealing your newspapers and the issue has been amicably resolved.

Now is a good time for us to remind everyone that newspaper theft is a crime, despite the newspaper being free to readers.

In addition to possible criminal prosecution, campus disciplinary action, even potential civil lawsuit, newspaper theft is censorship, especially for state employees.

The Student Press Law Center, Washington, D.C., guidelines state, “...if the perpetrator is a government official - which would include any public school administrator, employee or faculty member - he or she has likely violated the First Amendment and can be sued under applicable civil rights laws.”

The chocolate-only meal S

uppose you have a limited time to eat, need to eat on the go, or maybe, like me, you weren’t super hungry and wanted something new.

Welcome to the chocolate only, four course meal.

You will need a bag of Hershey’s miniatures and a mostly-full stomach.

Take out one Krackle piece, Abigail Swanson one Mr. Goodbar, one milk chocolate and one special dark piece. Put away the bag. Don’t look at the health information (except the protein, you can see all the protein you are eating).

Start with the Krackel bar. Peel back the red and silver exterior and brush the bumped bottom of the rectangle with your fingertips. Sniff deeply and let the chocolate melt until you can roll the cereal nubs against the roof of your mouth. Or take a bite and let the bits suspended in chocolate crush into your molars. This is the salad course of your meal. Just a light opener before the richer, deeper parts.

Take the Mr. Goodbar between your lips. Let the slight peanut aroma fill the back of your nostrils and imagine the rich earth the peanut pieces were extracted from. Let your teeth mash the rectangle

into a melty pulp. Savor this course, it is the meat and potatoes of your meal.

Take a drink or have something salty before the next piece to cleanse the palate. Let the original milk chocolate slide across your tongue and melt into silky smoothness. Let the waters of your mouth flow around it and meld into one sweet liquid. This is the dessert course of your meal.

Take a break for a while. Chat with a friend. When you are ready, approach the special dark piece. Roll it between your fingers beside your ear. Let the wrapper crackle and fold.

Draw the rectangle beneath your nose and take deep whiffs of cocoa. Break the piece while it is still in the wrapper and place one half on the center of your tongue. Let it melt. Close your eyes and savor it as you would fine cheese or wine after a meal.

Let it linger in your mouth like a cigar. When the last remnant of chocolate vanishes from your oral cavity, place the final half.

The chocolate meal is not to be eaten with any regularity. The best chaser is lots of water and a brisk walk. Please eat responsibly.

Battling stress, dread and two scoops of paranoia amid watching Trump declare a national emergency March 13, I instinctively found comfort in creativity and put color to white fabric.

Since then, I’ve tie dyed over 50 T-shirts and only kept four, but prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, I found myself quite burnt out from the hobby I adopted Jan. 2017.

“We have to stop consuming culture,” Philosopher Terence McKenna said during a speech in 1995. “We have to create culture, don’t watch TV, don’t read magazines, don’t even listen to NPR. Create your own roadshow. The nexus of space and time where you are now is the most immediate sector of your universe…”

Though I’m not a big fan of drawing inspiration from sappy quotes, hearing McKenna’s speech during a time I felt a bit lost moved me toward creative activities. My twin is the most gifted photographer I know, and my older brother is the best guitarist I know, so I felt the need to be good at something other than cracking silly jokes to those around me.

After receiving a tie dye kit as a Christmas gift in 2016, I began dying a couple of T-shirts during the next semester of my freshman year.

Maybe it’s my ego, but making the traditional swirly design was not in my plans. Instead, I sought to create my own style and incorporate shapes to counter abstract visuals in every T-shirt. Loving the concept of light conquering darkness, my ultimate goal in this newly acquired hobby was to create a lighthouse out of colors, rubber bands and pinching techniques.

But as the cliché went, “Honey, you got a big storm coming,” and I certainly did.

Having no clue what I was doing, my first shirt looked like smeared paint on a paper plate.

So, while making my second shirt I drew a lighthouse with permanent marker on a white T-shirt thinking the colors would absorb only inside the tracing. Instead, the shirt was colorful without any patterns and kept my rough draft tracing of a lighthouse to show my mistake.

Wearing that shirt in the cafeteria, I received a nod from CSC football and tie dye legend Collin Eisenman as he complimented my creation.

The next week, it seemed he passed me his torch in the form of a flash drive carrying lots of The Grateful Dead and Pink Floyd’s greatest hits. As college became fast-paced, that moment slowed things down and helped me understand the impact small gestures have on people.

Entering my sophomore year, boredom of making similar looking T-shirt designs led to my next tie dye adventure, turning white bed sheets into tapestries. The tapestry process is more tedious and requires more dye, but it

marked my first time feeling confident in my capability to create something. The larger scale of white canvas on the bed sheets allowed me to attempt new designs and understand the rules of symmetry.

From there, I went back to making T-shirts and created the first design on a shirt I liked, a blue heart in front of chaotic visuals with no pattern. By this time, the importance of patience in the process made sense since I attempted too much without any experience during my initial phase of the practice.

Entering my junior year, I attempted more shapes on T-shirts and made some progress, but again felt incomplete with my work. So, I again turned to making more tapestries, but felt no joy in the creative process and often dreaded the work.

The break concluded in March and my hands returned to being stained and blistered by rubber bands (only the toughest men understand this pain), and a flip finally switched in my head. The time away added perspective and time to think.

I actually loved each T-shirt I made, but one task still remained.

Attempting the lighthouse design in early September, I knew nearly four years of experience were on my belt and for once felt capable of accomplishing my quest for construction.

Upon pinching imaginary lines traced by my eyes, I battled visualization and symmetry, but the unveiling of a T-shirt showing a tower with lights beaming out brought my creative journey full circle. Now, I can move forward and improve on future designs I’m capable of.

This simple hobby of tie dyeing white fabric became a passion and identity of mine, but it also brought moments of solace and reflection.

When taking a break from something, it’s important we continue focusing on our surroundings to assess other areas needing improvement.

Creativity doesn’t make one exclusive, I believe it’s a natural trait among us, but is lost when our identity is built on consuming items and media.

“The declaration celebrates the 55th anniversary of the signing of the 1965 Higher Education Act and acknowledges the talents and potential first-generation students have to offer their communities.,” said Tena L. Cook, CSC marketing coordinato, said. “The declaration also reinforces the important role TRIO programs, Project Strive and Upward Bound, play in promoting educational success for first generation students. First generation students are those from a family where neither parent has a four-year college degree.”

Coy was a member of Project Strive as a first-generation college student at CSC before graduating in 2018. He now works with prospective college students from Chadron and Alliance.

“I love what I do,” Coy said in a press release Tuesday. “Since I was a first-generation student, I was able to do things through Project Strive that my family wasn’t able to do. I can motivate students, but they have got to dig down deep to make this work for them. There are resources, but they have to meet me half way.”

According to CSC’s 2019 fall enrollment survey, 40% of enrolled undergraduate students were first generation.

Día de los Muertos or Day of the Dead is a holiday filled with food, music, flowers, candles, skulls, and skeletons. Don’t get it confused with Halloween, because it’s not the same.

Día de los Muertos is a two-day holiday festival celebrated Nov. 1 and 2. Día de los Muertos is highly associated with Mexico but it’s celebrated in many Latin American countries and Mexican populations in the United States.

The holiday is a mix of Aztec tradition and the Catholic observance of All Saint’s Day, Nov. 1, which is reserved for honoring deceased children and All Souls Day, Nov. 2, honors deceased adults.

It is believed that the veil between the living and the dead is thinnest, and deceased lo ones are able to visit the living for the day. The reason for this holiday is to celebrate the li deceased loved ones. It’s a way to normalize death.

If people grieve and are sad over the dead, it is believed the descended will be offended honor them with laughter and joy.

People clean and decorate graves, orange marigolds usually presented on adult’s grave white orchids on children’s graves.

Calacas (skeletons) and calaveras (skulls) are known to be symbols of the holiday. Mo associate the two with Día de los Muertos, because they are everywhere. They are seen on makeup, posters, figurines, and most decorations.

Food is seen as an important part of Mexican culture, so this holiday isn’t short of diff recipes. There’s a range of sweets, pan de Muertos, and most ofrendas (table filled with off have that person’s favorite meals like mole, tamales, or hot chocolate.

Ofrendas, meaning offering in Spanish, are set up to remember and honor their decea loved ones. The ofrenda is set up on a table, usually with a white tablecloth and papel pica tissue paper).

There can be several levels to an ofrenda. The top is the place for images of Saints and cifix. For each deceased relative, there is a candle, the light being one of the many things t their way back home for the day. A path from the cemetery to the ofrenda at home is cove flower petals, candles, and offerings to help guide spirits as well.

There is so much more that goes into this holiday, and there is so much more to learn through experiencing it and not just reading about it.

A way to learn more is to watch Coco, the Book of Life, or other movies about Día de Muertos. Another way to learn more and to participate in this holiday is building your ow ofrenda.

Theatre to debut new show: ‘What’s Next?’ u From CSC College Relations How does a theatre department present a play that is socially distanced during a pandemic? This question, combined with time travel and how it could result in alternate outcomes, led Chadron State College Professor Scott Cavin into a collaboration with Artist-in-Residence Jenn Poarch and playwright David Craven, a former CSC Artist-in-Residence, who lives in Georgia, to develop a concept.

Their final product, “What’s Next?” will debut Nov. 12-15 in the Student Center.

Performances are free and will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sunday. Seat reservations are required and can be made online. Face coverings and social distancing are required.

The origin story centers on a college freshman, Arthur, who shows up early to a class hoping to chat with a girl who interests him. Through this scene, the audience learns a bit about Arthur’s background and his friends. Will he gain enough confidence to ask out Jenny?

The three additional scenes, in two different dorm lobbies and a student center, are possible alternate endings to the origin story. Each audience will view the scenes in a different order.

Poarch, who is directing the production, said new characters are introduced, as well as new circumstances, some beyond the characters’ control. All of these introductions affect Arthur’s opinions, behavior and growth, she said.

Topics addressed in the production in-

clude change, insecurities, gun control, and bullying.

“By listening to others and paying attention to things around us, we can control how we react to any given circumstance,” Poarch said. “The story is intended to be open-ended in all aspects. It can take place anywhere really and anytime between 2005 and present-day. Of course, being on the Chadron State College campus, as the director, I am tailoring it to this area and its environment.”

Four audiences of 14 individuals each will view the first scene in the Bordeaux, Ballroom, Scottsbluff, and Lakota Rooms.

After viewing one of the 20-minute scenes, each group will walk to the next location for another performance until they have seen Photo by Daniel Binkard, Chadron State College the entire show.

“We’re trying to survive and thrive in the pandemic. This approach is similar to guerilla theatre. The audience moves with us and we all adapt to change together. We’re moving out of our comfort zone. We had to do that when M-Hall was being renovated in 2000,” Cavin said.

Poarch said the unique format requires actors to be quick on their feet.

“The actors have to be ready for new dialogue and other changes. It’s also the point of the show. There’s nothing to pull from.

This production has never been performed before so we all get to interpret everything together,” Poarch said.

Twenty-six The Big Event volunteers traded in their keyboards for gardening tools this week during Chadron State College’s third-annual Mini Big Event.

Coming on the heels of co-hosting the virtual “One Big Thanks Conference,” the Mini Big Event was the first time TBE staff have been able to get out of the virtual world and onto jobsites in the community.

Endangered species flies over Nebraska u By Kamryn Kozisek Ag and Range Editor

Flocks of white, long legged birds can be seen flying over parts of Nebraska as endangered whooping cranes migrate to the southern U.S. for the winter.

The whooping crane species has been on the endangered species list since 1973, the population of the birds dropped below 20 in the 1940s.

The destruction of wetlands has been linked to the decline of whooping cranes whose major habitat is in inland wetlands.

Wetland habitats have been declining for 100’s of years as the land is drained for agriculture.

Starting in the 1880’s whooping cranes were hunted for meat and eggs taken to be sold. When the Migratory Bird Treaty Act was introduced in 1918, hunting whooping cranes became illegal. At this time populations of whooping cranes continued to decrease despite decreased pressure from hunting.

In 1950 only a small migratory population of the cranes existed, this flock migrated Canada to Texas and had contained16 individuals.

Current populations of wild whooping cranes is approximately 505. Whooping crane recovery groups in the U.S. and Canada are working to help grow wild populations.

The International Crane Foundation is one of many organizations involved with improving the status of whooping crane populations. This process is done by costume rearing young birds.

The process of rearing chicks begins with matching two adult birds together, this process is very complex. The bird’s genetics and behavior is taken into account when selecting a pair.

Whooping cranes mate for life and some pairs may take years to bond together and reproduce.

During the breeding season from April to June pairs will either breed together or the female will be artificially inseminated using a male that is a better genetic match.

Once the female lays a full clutch of two eggs the eggs are taken and placed in an incubator. Once the original eggs are gone the pair will rebreed and lay another clutch, which are also taken to be raised.

The eggs are placed in an incubator for approximately 29 days. At 29 days the egg is moved to an incubator where it can be watched by workers as it begins to hatch.

As soon as the chick is hatched workers will begin the process of rearing the chick. The chick is moved to a small bin enclosure where it is taught to eat and drink by the workers.

Workers that are around chicks are dressed in an all-white suit with a screened window around the face, to prevent the chick from seeing the person. On one arm the suit has a puppet replicating the head of an adult whooping crane the other sleeve is black tipped like the wings of a whooping crane.

This costume is worn to prevent the chicks from imprinting onto humans. Past biologist failed to rear young cranes because the chicks imprinted onto the humans meaning they saw them as the mother and refuse to return to the wild.

Once the young have reached the stage where they are beginning to fly they are introduced back into a wild population of adult whooping cranes in the hope that the adults will adopt the young and teach them migratory routes.

These adult populations were raised by humans but were introduced into wild populations once they were able to care for themselves. These pairs breed and raise young as a completely

undomesticated population.

Early organizations taught young birds to fly using a small airplane disguised as an adult whooping crane. The plane led the flock to the summer and wintering grounds.

Areas of Nebraska fall into the Central Flyway which is used by whooping crane populations during migration. One population in particular known as the Aransas Wood Buffalo flock is currently traveling through Nebraska. This flock is flying from its summer grounds near Wood Buffalo park in Canada to Aransas National Wildlife Refuge in Texas.

Whooping cranes are 5 feet tall and all white except for the black wing tips and reddish colored face. They also fly with their necks outstretched. Many of the birds may be banded meaning they have a colored band wrapped around their ankle.

Nebraska Game and Parks is asking for anyone who has spotted a whooping crane to contact them immediately. They also ask that people not approach the birds as it is against federal and state law to cause whooping cranes harm or stress.

Counting whooping cranes is important in the management of the species.

Biologists are able to track specific flocks by reports from the public. Banded bird numbers help biologists keep track of individuals.

Testing finds no cases of CWD in elk u By Kamryn Kozisek Ag and Range Editor

Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) is a disease that effects the brain of ruminant game species specifically, elk, deer and moose.

CWD attacks the nervous system and lymphoid tissue of the host animal. This is causes strange behaviors from infected animals.

The disease is slow moving and causes animals to behave erratically and become emaciated. Animals are more likely to die from disease, humans or accidents before showing symptoms of CWD. Behavioral signs to look out for are walking in set patterns (pacing), nervousness, salivation, listlessness and being isolated from a herd or group. Elk show hyper-excitability as a symptom.

The first case of CWD was found in Colorado in 1967 however, the first case in Nebraska was not discovered until 2000 in Kimball County.

The direct way that CWD is passed is unknown, but it is thought to be transmitted from animal to animal by saliva, feces and urine. Animals that travel in condensed herds are more likely to have outbreaks of CWD.

Nebraska Game and Parks has been testing harvested deer and elk for CWD since 1997. Over 55,000 deer have been tested with 815 testing positive. 280 elk have been tested and 14 of them tested positive.

Elk testing for 2020 was completed during August, this testing found no cases of CWD in the animals that were tested.

At this time CWD is not thought to be a population decreasing factor for elk or deer populations in Nebraska.

Testing for CWD is done by testing lymph nodes, tonsils or brain of an animals. Because CWD cannot be detected without removal of necessary organs or tissues, there is no way to test living animals.

Nebraska Game and Parks uses deer check stations, to remove lymph nodes from harvested animals to be tested. With COVID-19 leading to deer check stations moving online, samples will only be taken by hunters who volunteer animals for testing.

With archery season having already begun and rifle season starting Nov. 14 hunters should be looking out for animals that are emaciated and behaving oddly.

If a harvested animal is suspected of having CWD. Samples of the lymph nodes, tonsils and brain should be sent to Nebraska Game and Parks.

Animals with CWD or suspected to have CWD should not be consumed by humans or animals.

If butchering or processing an animal suspected of CWD, avoid getting brain or spinal tissue near other meat products. Avoid eating the brain and any meat near the spinal cord.

When handling animals that may have CWD, those harvesting the animals should wear protective gear, especially gloves and masks.

Avoid spreading feces and body fluids of the harvested animal near other animals or meat.

After butchering the animal tools and materials should be washed thoroughly and soaked in a solution of 40% bleach. No organic materials should be left on utensils.

If wanting to keep horns from an infected animals, biologists suggest that the skull cap should be removed with a clean knife. All tissue and organic material needs to be removed from the harvested animal for the safety of the hunter.

The skull should be soaked in a mix of bleach and water.

Nebraska deer check stations have been moved to an online format due to COVID-19 concerns, a report must be done for all harvested animals.

The change to move to online reporting from harvest check stations was made to limit contact between hunter and students/professionals at the stations.

The program was created to make it possible for broad data to be collected without putting workers and public at risk.

The electronic program is called the Telecheck Program, it can be found on the Outdoor Nebraska website.

Reports must be done within 48 hours after the animal was harvested.

The system is set-up as a questionnaire designed to be easy to use.

The answers are broad for animal information to help hunters to accurately report.

Reports must be completed before the animal is transported out of state. All reports must be filled out by the person who harvested the animal.

The Telecheck Program requires a report of species, permit number, where the animal was harvested (county and name of public land), management unit, day of kill, days hunted, weapon type, sex and age.

Age is non-specific and is only listed as fawn or adult animals. All male animals need to have antler or

horn measurements included in the report.

After finishing the report hunters need to record the seal number given and the permit number if the animal is going to be transported.

Reporting is required for all harvested animals regardless of weapon and season.

The dates for deer season are Sept. 1- Dec. 31 for archery, Nov. 14- 22 for firearm, Dec. 1-Dec. 31 and antlerless late season Jan 1- Jan 15 2021.

Statewide bucks only from Nov. 14- 22, mule deer conservation are is open Nov. 14-22, statewide whitetail buck season is from Sept. 1- Dec. 31 and youth and landowner season runs from Sept. 1- Jan 15 2021.

If unspecified weapons for specialty seasons are the same as the weapon seasons.

All rules remain the same for the 2020-2021 deer season, Unit Deer Permit and Habitat stamps are required for all hunters.

The Telecheck Program can be filled out online or it can be filled out by calling the local Game and Parks districts.

Reports can be filled out online 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and until 1 p.m. on the last day of the season. If filling out the report over the phone, hours are the same as the local Nebraska Game and Parks office.

Norris stands strong against struggles u By Paige Seidler Reporter

After creating The Eagle Effort Award to influence academic improvement in Chadron’s elementary school, Chadron State’s Jake Norris is one-of-22 student-athletes nominated for the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team.

People can vote at espn.com/allstate to vote with the polls closing Nov. 22.

“I’m proud to do something that’s going to make an impact and do the right thing,” Norris said. “It’s truly something special I couldn’t have done alone.”

According to CSC Head Football Coach Jay Long, Norris, 22, senior of Fort Morgan, Colorado, is the second Eagle to be nominated for this award and the coach said he could not be more proud of Norris.

From an early age, Norris was surrounded by football.

Norris plays right guard at Chadron State College but began his football journey as a running back during his time as a Green Bay Packer in flag football at age 5.

Norris’s first touchdown came on a 35-yard run during a flag foot-

ball game which he celebrated with a spike of the football. The big moment was short lived though, as his father looked at him and said, “act like you’ve been there before,” Norris said.

Norris played tackle football from second to sixth grade but spent his final season on the bench after he developed a fear of hitting. Norris was an aggressive player whose style was viewed as too rough by his father who thought it could lead to injuries.

By middle school, Norris debuted as an offensive lineman, but had carried his fear of hitting into high school. He was smaller than most players which added to his troubles. His sophomore year Norris hit a small growth spurt, boosting his confidence and he finally started for the team as a senior.

When Norris arrived at Chadron State, it was a hard adjustment. Prior to students arriving for classes, he was the only football player to live in Edna Hall freshman year.

Norris said it was the hardest point of college and that if it wasn’t for Coach Long, teammate Sam McKinley, senior of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and his family he would not still be playing. McKinley

According to McKinley, Norris is an exceptional leader. “He always tries to lead by example in everything we do,” he said. “He goes out of his way to help people.”

Norris’s freshman year was a time of growth for him as a football player, he said, which he credits to CSC’s strength and conditioning program along with the tough practices held by the Eagles’ football team.

Of many CSC traditions, Norris derives the most pleasure from hosting the Eagle-Rock trophy after victories against South Dakota School of Mines.

Two weeks ago, Norris got to hold it once again.

“It’s our expectation to have that trophy and it’s a good feeling to show it,” He said. “Not everyone sees the hard work that goes into our practices, film study and preparation every week to earn those victories.”
