WINTER STORM CLOSES CAMPUS, ICES SPRING DAYS The Spring Days events planned for Friday, including the petting zoo, a club fair, inflatables and bongo ball, were cancelled after a winter storm hit the

region late Thursday and early Friday. The storm prompted officials to close campus, which in turn forced the Spring Days cancellation.

CAB discusses proposed homecoming themes Loren Ritter Sports Editor

Student Activities Director Megan Northrup presented next year’s homecoming theme ideas at the meeting to get CAB’s input.

The themes so far are Homecoming Roadtrip, The Homecoming Games (a Hunger Games theme), Happily Ever Homecoming (Disney theme), Chadron’s Got Games (board game theme), Home Sweet Homecoming (similar to last year’s theme), and The Rock (different rock theme days with ‘protect the Rock’ ended out the week).

“The board game one sounds really fun and applicable to people coming into school, for what they’re going to be doing. It feels like a foreshadowing,” Ashten Gerbing, 24, of Hot Springs, South Dakota, said.

“I like the Rock, especially with getting a new football stadium soon,” Justin Hartman, 21, senior of Valentine, said.

Moderate head nodding passed the two votes in, leading Chadron’s Got Games and The Rock to the top two choices of next year’s homecoming themes.

Nominations for the 2018-2019 school year CAB Executive Board opened during the meeting. After a long silence, Vice Chair of Finance, Tierra Snyder, senior of Beatrice, nominated Chair, Kimberly Hernandez, junior of Scottsbluff, Vice Chair of Relations, Hannah Fessler, junior of Alliance, and Vice Chair of Records, Kristina McGann, junior of Broken Bow, for their current positions.

No nominations have been made for the positions of Vice Chair of Finance and Vice Chair of Programming. Snyder and Vice Chair of Programming, Isabella Irish will be graduating, so the positions need to be filled. All positions are still up for grabs, and nominations will remain open until the meeting next Tuesday.

A former student reached out to CAB and RLA to set up a time for students to make cards for Mr. Phil Cary. Cary was a

math professor at CSC and retired from CSC last year. Recently, six tumors have been found in his brain, and in addition to the Caring Bridge account being set up in support, there will be a card making event for Cary, 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the Ponderosa Room, Wednesday, April 25.

Last Sunday, 230 students attended the final Free Movie Night of the semester. ‘A Quiet Place’ sold out, and students ended up having to buy their tickets to get into the showing.

Senate allocated 2,000 dollars towards the Week of Welcome for larger scale programming. CAB would like to sponsor a day of activities to welcome new students at the state park.

The Big Event is scheduled for this Saturday regardless of weather.

“Let me encourage you to think about participating in the Big Event this upcoming weekend. I know that the weather is going to be absolutely wonderful, but it will be a great experience,” Pat Beu said.

Elections for senate to close on Friday Nalani Stewart News Editor Elections for senate began Wednesday at noon, and close noon on Friday, April 20. The winners of the election will be announced at 5 p.m. on Friday and will be in next week’s edition of the paper. If you are running, you will get an email will the results. Inauguration of the winners will be on Monday, April 23.

“Make sure you guys vote. You guys should be getting an email on Wednesday around noon,” Chief Justice Samantha Merrill said.

“If you guys have any questions, Alex Helmbrecht did send out an email about a week ago with a YouTube video to explain how to use it,” President Carly Slaught said.

To celebrate Asian-Pacific Heritage month, the cafeteria will have an Asian-Pacific Heritage meal is from 10:30a.m. -1:30 p.m., today.

CAB had their last Free Movie Night of the semester on Sunday, with a turnout of 230 students. From 6-9 p.m. on Sunday, CAB will host the last Free Bowling Night of the semester.

“Pizza will be provided, so I hope to see you guys there,” CAB Representative Kimberly Hernandez said.

Due to the snow day on Friday, several of the Spring Days Events were canceled. Senate discussed whether

some of these events would be rescheduled.

“We were thinking maybe next week sometime, or it might be later this week. With the contracts, it gets weird with payment and that sort of thing,” Faculty Advisor Megan Bren said. “So, we might reschedule bongo ball for Week of Welcome if possible. And then, the exotic animals we might have in the Student Center this week or hopefully next week.”

In another matter, Senate discussed and added some insight to the proposed Homecoming week themes for next year. Proposed themes included Homecoming Road trip: Hunger Games themed week, Happily Ever Homecoming: Disney themed week, Chadron Got Game: A board game themed week, Home Sweet Homecoming, and a “Rock” theme week. A theme has not yet been chosen.

Chadron State College reveals its new website Torri Brumbaugh Managing Editor CSC launched its new website, Monday, after almost a year of designing it.

“I think the biggest [problem] was that the website hadn’t had a comprehensive redesign since 2012. When you look at a website, it really needs to be the front door to an institution,” Director of College Relations, Alex Helmbrecht said.

“In all honesty, it is probably the number one marketing and communication tool that the college has, so we wanted to take all of the great things about Chadron State College and convey that in a consistent format….”

Helmbrecht oversaw the project and worked with IT Specialist Andrew Schmid, and College Relations Digital Graphic Designer Daniel Binkard. Helmbrecht said a bulk of the credit for the website should be given to both Binkard and Schmid.

After working with various focus groups, including students, faculty, staff, admissions ambassadors and an executive council, the team felt that the website was ready to debut in mid-April. “ We understand that the website communicates to a lot of different audiences, so we wanted our students, returning students and faculty to see the website change before the school year ended….It would still give students some time to prepare and get everything in order before finals,”

Helmbrecht said.

With a sleek, efficient and consistent look, the new website is made to adapt to mobile versions and is compliant to the Americans with Disabilities Act. Helmbrecht also said the platform the new design is on will be easier to update as the site ages.

Helmbrecht sent an email across campus on Monday, April 9 to let people know the website changes would be made.

The team wanted to be as transparent and deliberate about the website as possible. To help with the transition, a video tutorial for the website was sent in Helmbrecht’s email and people are encouraged to use the websites search bar or call the IT help desk at 308-432-6311.

Nearly Naked Mile The Nearly Naked Mile will be from 9 p.m. -midnight on April 27. The event is a way for students to have fun during a short race, wear costumes and give back to the community by donating clothes. Clothing donations will be accepted in the Student Center. Prizes will be awarded to the best individual and group costumes, to those who donate the most clothes, and those with the fastest race time.

Cards for Dr. Cary Students, faculty, and members of the community are invited to make cards for Dr. Cary from 3-6 p.m., April 25 in the Lakota Room in the Student Center. Those attending can make their own cards, or can drop off cards and letters for him. Card supplies will be provided by CAB, and refreshments will be provided by RLA. PR Club and Project Strive screen “Angst” The Public Relations club and Project Strive invite students to come watch a special screening of “Angst: Raising Awareness Around Anxiety” at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m., April 30, in Memorial Hall Auditorium. Admission is free for students, faculty, staff, and community members. Following the screening, there will be panel discussions between counselors, community members, faculty and staff. The Public Relations Club will also be providing May Day baskets around campus throughout finals week.

Steel Magnolias Chadron State theater department will be putting on Steel Magnolias at the Memorial Hall Black Box from 7:30- 9:30 p.m. on Friday, April 20. Originally a movie, the both hilarious and touching play revolves around a group of gossipy southern ladies in a small-town beauty parlor. The women and their friends encounter tragedy and good fortune, growing stronger and closer in the process. National media reviews about the national Broadway play have been positive. Keep a positive mindBright Side set for upcoming finals On the Rachel Mitchell Columnist The end is in sight my friends!

Finals are just around the corner, which means summer is almost here! I don’t know about you guys but I’m looking forward to the warm weather and adventures that summer is bound to bring. But between now and then are finals.

Today I am going to be sharing some tips to help keep you motivated and in a positive mindset to try and push through finals, and stress as little as possible.

I believe having a positive mindset is crucial if you want to achieve your goal. If your headspace is negative, it is harder to accomplish your goals. One of the best ways to stay positive during this stressful time is finding an optimistic point of view.

No one likes to write 10 page papers or take a 50 question exam.

Finding a positive aspect about it might be easier than you think.

One of the ways I do it is by finding something about the work I

like.

For example, if I have to write a super long paper I try to find a topic I enjoy that I can focus on to make it more bearable. I also look for questions that I know a lot on.

There might be a section you did really well in, so start with those questions.

Another way to keep a good mindset is putting yourself in a positive environment. If you’re studying in your room alone, maybe put on some music you like and remove distractions that might be in reach. Whether that be your phone, TV remote or game console controller, move it away from you. If you’re working with

friends, try to encourage them and not distract them. Motivate each other and reduce negative comments.

You will be surprised by how much more you will get done if you encourage each other and not complain about how much you have to do and how much you don’t want to do it.

One final tip is to set goals with a reward for yourself at the end.

There is nothing more motivating than saying once you get a certain assignment done that you can have a break.

Taking breaks after long or stressful assignments is great. Especially if you give yourself a treat at the end. You can go to the gas station with some friends and grab a slushie, play a round of volleyball with friends, go for a walk or watch an episode of something to unwind a bit.

I hope that these tips help you through the last few weeks of school. Encourage your friends and make the most of the time left of this semester. Have fun, do your best and stay positive my friends!

Spring Days returns for it’s second year with a “That’s so 90’s” theme Loren Ritter Sports Editor 90’s music, plaid shirts, and graffiti fonts all made their way back to life at this year’s Spring Days. According to Spring Days planners, Johnathan Sayaloune, senior of Scottsbluff, and Chaona Radtke, sophomore of Sidney, despite a short break that took place before they started attending CSC, Spring Days has been going on for as long as they can remember.

Attendance was extremely high for this year’s events. Over 200 shirts were supplied to be handed out at the Backyard Bash, and even with the rule of one shirt per person, the

shirts ran out before the night was over.

Over 100 chairs were set out for Mr. and Mrs. Spring Days, and due to the fact that more seating had to be added for attendees of the event, Sayaloune believes that over 200 people showed up to watch the show.

Mr. and Mrs. Spring Days’ reputation preceded it, with contestants competing in a catwalk, interview, and talent portion. Despite tough competition and the pants of Aaron Duin, senior of Omaha, flying off, Devin Fulton, sophomore of Glenrock, Wyoming, and Torri Brumbaugh, junior of Gering, took home the titles of 2018 Mr. and Mrs. Spring Days.

The snow may have cancelled Friday’s activities, but Sayaloune and Radtke are hoping that if not all, most of the vendors will be able to reschedule.

The JDRF walk, hosted by Cardinal Key Club, still took place Saturday despite the weather. The snow forced the walk to be held indoors.

The weather may have caused the petting zoos, club fair and other fun activities to be cancelled. Saturday night, the dance proved to be popular with high attendance.

Vendors do tend to vary each year depending on the needs and theme of Spring Days, but Outlaw Printers and Fort Imprint are two businesses that the Spring Days Board use and would like to keep using every year. The budget this year was around 20,000, but the budget was nowhere close to being used.

Eagles fall 1-3 to the Orediggers at home Devin Fulton Reporter Another week of softball, and another re-scheduled game. This time, the Eagles hosted visiting RMAC opponent, Colorado School of Mines, on Sunday and Monday (games originally scheduled for Saturday and Sunday).

After dropping seven games in-a-row, Chadron State found some early momentum on Sunday against the Orediggers. Then, it was Colorado School of Mines who took over and won the rest of the series, 3-1.

In the first game, Chadron State struggled at bat. The Eagles failed to score any runs early and were faced with a 4-0 deficit heading to the bottom of the sixth inning. At this point, the Orediggers had allowed just two hits all game, but a double home run from Kayla Michel,

After tying things up at four apiece, Angelica Maples, sophomore of Olivehurst, California, hit a double home-run that gave Chadron State the lead. The Eagles went on to win the first game of the series 6-4.

Over the next three games, Colorado School of Mines eventually regained their offensive presence. In the second game of the series, the Orediggers got back on track early and often.

They scored five points in the first two innings and another eight points in the fourth and fifth innings. The Eagles only scored one run in the fifth inning, finishing the game 13-1.

On Monday, the Eagles tried to replicate their performance from the first game, but were unable to get anything going offensively. Jessica Jarecki, sophomore of Littleton, Colorado, pitched over 150 pitches in just five innings. The

Orediggers had success at bat and went on to win the first game of the day 9-0 in five innings.

In the mid-afternoon game, the success continued for the Orediggers. Allowing three runs to be scored in the first inning, the Eagles were trailing early and could not find any late momentum.

Colorado Mines went on to defeat the Eagles 7-2.

After a 1-3 weekend, the Eagles remain in the ninth spot of the RMAC with a 10-19 record while the Orediggers remain at the fifth spot with a 19-13 conference record.

Chadron State is still in the postseason conversation, but must get wins against their remaining RMAC opponents.

The next RMAC matchup for the Eagles will take place this Saturday in Alamosa, Colorado, against the Adams State Grizzlies who possess a 10-18 conference record, and sit just above the Eagles in the eighth spot in the RMAC.

Eagle track & field earns top-three finishes in Colorado Aaron Duin Reporter Five members of the Chadron State track and field team earned top-three finishes at the Kit Mayer Invitational in Golden, Colorado.

The Eagles were scheduled to appear at the Bauer Invitational in Rapid City, South Dakota, but the meet was canceled due to inclement weather.

The team was able to enter the Kit Mayer Invitational to provide the athletes additional opportunities to qualify for the upcoming RMAC championships.

The Eagles showed their depth in the throwing events

with seven top-five performances. Jesse Bleidt, senior of Lewellen, placed second in both the discus and hammer throw with performances of 153 feet, 3 inches and 179 feet, 3 inches respectively.

Blake Jacobs, senior of Highlands Ranch, Colorado, earned another second-place finish for the Eagles in the shot put with a throw of 50 feet, ž inch. Jacobs placed fourth in the hammer throw.

Ashton Hallsted, sophomore of Casper, Wyoming, showed off her skills by placing third in the discus, third in the hammer throw, and fifth in the shot put.

Ashlyn Hanson, senior of Seward, placed second in the hammer throw and fifth in the discus with throws of 177 feet, 9 inches and 130 feet, 10 inches.

On the track, the Eagles earned two top-five finishes. Cassie Johnson, senior of Rock Springs, Wyoming, placed third in the 400-meter dash with a time of 59.54 seconds.

In the 110-meter high hurdles Justin Leman, junior of Douglas, Wyoming, placed fourth in 15.11 seconds.

The Eagles are back in action April 19 and April 20 at the Brian Clay Invitational in Azuza, California.

The meet features strong competition including several of Division I programs. The meet will be the athlete’s last opportunity to qualify for the RMAC Championships that will be held April 26 through April 28 in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

‘Three Nebraska Lyrics’ debuts at choir concert Yen Nguyen Reporter The Chadron State College Concert Choir and Community Choir attracted an audience of about 150 people to the Memorial Hall Auditorium, Sunday, and marked the last concert of Una Taylor, a professor in the music department and the director of Community Choir.

The two ensembles performed the diverse list of music with the highlight on the world premiere of “Three Nebraska Lyrics” featuring poems by Becky Boesen, composed

by David von Kampen.

The Community Choir, under the direction of Taylor, performed meaningful pieces about singing, the joy of singing and peace

in the world.

The collaboration with the women of Concert Choir and Rick Puzzo on djembe made “There is Peace” by Jim Papoulis an interesting piece with a profound meaning. Along with an emphasis on peace in the world, the choirs also expressed the meaning of singing.

“All we are, we’ve found in song,” Taylor quoted from the “Flight Song” by Kim André Arnesen.

With the theme of peace, the music chosen also offer the diversity in culture. The Community Choir performed “Ukuthula,” a traditional African piece arranged by André van der Merwe.

“It’s really good! I can related when they sing ‘Ukuthula’ because I’m African,” Isioma Geraldine, 25, freshman of Lagos, Nigeria, said.

Following the Community Choir, Concert Choir performed for the audience a set with the dynamic rhythm. The set included “Fresh and Fearless” by Daniel Elder, “Bonzorno Madonna” by Antonio Scandello and “You Stole My Love” by Walter Cecil Macfarren.

The choir performed “Your Fragrance” by Edward Henderson in a cappella style. The piece referred to God and implied that we can find God in everything, and feel his presence through all kinds of scents.

CSC Concert Choir and Community Choir closed the night with the world debut of “Three Nebraska Lyrics,” consisting of “On the Ridge,” “Underneath” and “The Planting Season.”

Von Kampen worked closely with Nebraska poet Becky Boesen and composed

the poems into choral pieces specifically for Chadron State College.

“We had an interesting week making music together,” Joel Schreuder, a professor in the music department, said.

Schreuder directed the two choirs for the premiere of “Three Nebraska Lyrics.”

The concert was the last one for Taylor since she will be retiring at the end of this semester.

“Personally, it’s bitter and sweet to me. I’m glad to retire but I’m going to miss my choir a lot,” Taylor said.

The music department’s next event will be the Wind Symphony and Community Band concert at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 24. The concert was rescheduled due to the snow storm that closed campus last Friday.

CSC Jazz Ensembles perform at their final spring concert Brianna Wilson Reporter Roughly 50 people filled Memorial Hall’s Auditorium Tuesday evening to watch the Jazz Band and Vocal Jazz perform. The evening started off with the seven members of the ensemble checking the microphones while off stage, before walking on stage in order to greet the audience with smiles as the lights dimmed.

Launching the evening was Johnny Mercer’s and Jerome Kern’s “Dearly Beloved,” arranged by Paris Rutherford and Jacob Voorhis, senior of Fort Valley, Virginia, played a guitar solo during the opening act.

After the opening act, Katelyn Lambert, sophomore of Scottsbluff, welcomed the audience to the performance and gave credit to the opening act before introducing the next song, “The Best is Yet to Come/It Ain’t Necessarily So” by Cy Coleman and Carolyn Leigh, arranged by Sharon Broadley.

The seven performers stood in a semi-circle at the center of the stage. Leslie Hopton, junior of Sundance, Wyoming, stood out, wearing a red dress while the other six were on either side of her, three to each, all in dark grey or black dress attire.

The tone of the performance changed for the third song, “The Luckiest” by Ben Folds and arranged by Kerry Marsh with a solo by Lambert, which was a bit slower and smoother than its two predecessors.

Overall, though, the song that the Vocal Jazz seemed to like the most and that felt the liveliest was “Tenor Madness” by Sonny Rollins and Waldo King, arranged by Kirk Marcy.

The other four songs from the evening were accompanied by the drums, guitar, bass guitar, and piano, but Michael Stephens, associate music professor, played a solo on the tenor saxophone for this final song.

There was a short intermission at about 7:30 p.m. between the Vocal Jazz and Jazz Band which gave the band time to set up.

Once the band was ready to go, Kallie Bush, junior of Kimball, launched the Jazz Band portion of the concert with a solo on the baritone saxophone during the song, “Moanin’” by Charles Mingus, arranged by Sy Johnson.

After the opening song for the Jazz Band, Stephens introduced the ensemble and the songs, with a little bit of trivia here and there about some of the songs.

After the second song, “Corner Pocket,” by Freddie Green, Stephens gave a farewell to seniors Joe Cline and Daniel Espinosa, as it was the last performance they would do with the ensemble since they will be graduating in May. Stephens introduced the third song by saying that this author, Gordon Goodwin, was one of their favorite writers – some members in the band nodded to that statement.

The really upbeat and moving tune, “Picture IV,” featured solos by Will Reiter, freshmen of Bellwood, on piano, Allen Kissack, senior of Chadron, on trombone, Patrick Cassidy, junior of Scottsbluff, with the guitar, and Jack

Royals, senior of Rapid City, South Dakota, on the drums.

Throughout the entire performance, there was a lot of movement from the band in general as they swayed and moved along with the tune.

Prior to “Bags’ Groove” by Milt Jackson, arranged by John Clayton, Stephens mentioned that there was one member of the band that wasn’t able to be there. Bryony Trump, junior of Sterling, Colorado, was injured earlier in the semester in a car accident. He said she was recovering nicely and he was sure she would want to be there, but because of that incident, she couldn’t perform with the band on Tuesday.

After their final song, the audience rewarded the ensemble with a lot of applause as well as a few whistles and some “woo-hoos!” at the end. Stephens thanked the audience for coming again and called for another round of applause for the Vocal Jazz before wishing the members in the crowd a goodnight and to walk home safely.

Revolving around a group of gossipy southern ladies in a small-town beauty parlor, the play is alternately hilarious and touching—and, in the end, deeply revealing of the strength and purposefulness which underlies the antic banter of its characters.

Torri Brumbaugh Managing Editor Quick-witted, strong-willed women take the spotlight in “Steel Magnolias,” a sentimental southern play set in the 1980’s.

The play is set in Chinquapin, Louisiana, in Truvy’s Beauty Shop. Scene one introduces the audience to each character in the month of April as Truvy, played by Jennaya Hill, sophomore of Gordon, prepares Shelby, played by Kaitlynn Hessler, freshmen of Mitchell, and her mother M’Lynn, played by Mickenzy Loyd, sophomore of Big Piney Wyoming, for Shelby’s wedding.

Scene two is set in December, around the town’s major Christmas Festival, then the second act jumps a year and a half forward into June and ends in November.

Each scene revolves around major moments in Shelby’s life, especially because of her health. Shelby is diabetic and her complications due to her diabetes is a driving force behind the play.
