CSC, CPD investigating wrestling team for hazing allegations Managing Editor Chadron State College and Chadron Police Department are conducting separate investigations into claims of hazing during an initiation rite allegedly conducted last weekend among members of the wrestling team.

In a public statement issued at 10:45 a.m., Wednesday, CSC President Randy Rhine confirmed the college is conducting an independent internal investigation that is running concurrent with the CPD investigation.

In the statement, Rhine said that he was disappointed to report that the college “has been made aware of an off-campus incident last Saturday involving an alleged initiation rite between student-athletes belonging to the wrestling team.”

Details about the alleged incident were not in the release, including when the college’s investigation began, what the specific actions were, who was involved, and

what the consequences, if any, might be.

Rasmussen announces retirement from CSC Preston Goehring Managing Editor The CEO of the Chadron State Foundation announced her retirement, effective at the end of 2017.

Connie Rasmussen has served as the head of the Foundation since 2003, but has worked for Chadron State since 1990, where she started as the Title III Program Coordinator. After just two years with that title, she was hired as the Director of Alumni and Annual Giving in 1992.

“Primarily, there is never a good time to leave a job you love, but it is the right time now,” Rasmussen said. “We are in a great position now for me to step aside.”

Rasmussen said that the Foundation has a new and young staff that is capable of reaching a new audience and she is confident that they will succeed.

The Foundation works with CSC to provide scholarships and support for all students.

While in her time as the CEO, Rasmussen has overseen the growth and development of several programs to raise money for campus improvement projects, scholarship programs and department and research funds. One of the larger programs, titled Next Horizon, has the goal of $40 million over a five to seven year period, to be used for capital, program enhancement, and scholarship endowment objectives.

The Next Horizon’s initiatives target the Math & Science improvement and renovation

plan, the renovation and construction of the new sports complex, set to begin construction in November, and $15 million in gifts and donations to aid scholarships and different academic departments. The Foundation has committed to a $1 million donation for the sports complex, and $2 million for the Math & Science project.

“We are in the active phase of the sports complex, because that deadline is looming,” Rasmussen said. “We are also working on raising money for the math and science project but that also requires legislative funding. But at the same time we are still raising money for scholarships and endowments.”

The sports complex is scheduled to start demolition after the final home football game, Nov. 11.

Rasmussen didn’t want to reveal how much the Foundation has raised for the sports complex, but will announce it at the annual trustee meeting and recognition dinner in October.

Under Rasmussen the Foundation has become one of the largest contributors to campus improvement projects and endowment or scholarship support, raising over $30 million in 2011 for the Chicoine Center, the Rangeland facilities, and the Coffee Agriculture Pavilion.

CAB encourages clubs to spend allocated funds Nalani Stewart News Editor The AFB, Activities Fee Board, needs another member to complete this year’s committee. Last year, AFB allocated roughly $204,000 to fund clubs on campus, with $60,000 not spent. Vice Chair of Finance, Tierra Snyder, stressed that this money needs to be spent, or will not be allocated the next year.

“One of the reasons that you are denied money for the year following, is that you didn’t spend that money during the given year,” said Adviser Pat Beu. “If you aren’t going to utilize the money now, don’t be surprised if they say no.”

A meeting to “prepare advisors for new responsi-

bilities and new policies,” will be held on Sept. 19 or Sept. 21. A member from each club should email Beu, at pbeu@csc.edu, to notify which day they will attend the meeting with their adviser.

The third annual Chadron Harvest Fest will be held Oct. 7 from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the 200 Block of Main Street. Clubs are encouraged to participate in this community event.

With Homecoming right around the corner, the deadline for Bedsheets is approaching quickly. Bedsheets must be turn into the CAB/Senate office by 4:30 p.m. on Friday. Sheets can be made in four categories including Humor, Originality, People’s Choice, and School Spirit. Each club has been allocated a budget of $50 for Homecoming supplies.

The bed sheets will be displayed at the Homecom-

ing Parade taking place on Sept. 23, and club participation will be rewarded with a chance of winning $25 or $100 that will be allocated to club accounts. The winners will be able to display their bedsheet at the Homecoming football game.

Not participating in the parade or bed sheet will be considered an absence of a CAB meeting.

Eleven middle school students from Chadron attended a Western Education program hosted by Dakota Rice, 22, senior of Kellogg, Idaho. Rice, a math education major, taught the students the importance of agriculture, including livestock, crops, and the unique way of life that people in agriculture live.

Rice is also a bull rider on the CSC rodeo team.

“Just in society in general the ranching and agriculture lifestyle are all dying away,” Rice said. “We are ending up with a generation that doesn’t want to go into ranching. They want to go out and get degrees in other things and be successful.

They don’t see the value in staying home and running the family farm or ranch. So teaching the new and younger generation that agriculture is still important and the little things that it still benefits on a day to day basis is important.”

Rice opened with a presentation showing the importance of agriculture and how

common things like classroom materials are made of Ag products such as soy and even parts of cattle. The real treat for the excited students was examining and trying on some of Rice’s bull riding equipment.

Rice was even convinced by Head Rodeo Coach Dustin Luper and the students to hop on the practice mechanical bull.

Rice showed off his skills but was eventually bested by the bull, which Luper was controlling.

“It was good doing this one and being able to see that the kids are going to ask a lot of questions during the presentation and just seeing how excited they were in the arena I know that I need to spend a little more time here,” Rice said.

This was the first western education program that Rice has conducted. The next one is this afternoon, at 4 p.m. for intermediate school students.

“Luckily, I was able to do it at Chadron,” Rice said. “It was easier to facilitate a room and to get all the props ready for the kids.”

Rice also said that he wants to do similar programs, one at the rodeo in Cheyenne, Wyoming, at Laramie County Community College, and hopefully one or two more in the spring.

Senate discusses the future of Book Ends Nalani Stewart News Editor Student Senate debated ways to increase staff and faculty traffic flow to the coffee shop, Book Ends, in the library. At the meeting Monday night, Director of Food Services Tracy Shuck answered questions regarding, and spoke to Senate about Book Ends, saying that “student use of it not the issue,” but the lack of use by the faculty and staff. Each day, the coffee shop gets roughly 45 to 65 visitors, most of these visitors being students.

Students can use their Eagle Bucks to purchase coffee, and snacks, but profit comes from the use of credit cards, or cash.

With that, the shop loses roughly $30,000 a year.

Senate pays $10,000, one third the total cost per year, toward the running and cultivation of the coffee shop.

Senators posed the question of moving the shop to another location, for instance the Student Center, or possibly hiring a Barista. However, the Dinning Services are ultimately faced with the possible loss of more money.

“Just the equipment alone, to get a Batista, is roughly $10,000,” said Shuck. “That’s not counting any new cabinetry, or the new layout based on health regulations, which would be an additional $5,000.”

The question then became, how to generate faculty, staff, and commuter traffic flow, which could increase the amount of money the coffee shop earns. Incentives have been offered in the past by the Dining Services, including punch cards, cheaper cups, and special combos to try to generate traffic flow, but haven’t yielded fruitful results.

“One of the biggest competitions, is their own pot of coffee that is in their office,” said Shuck. “We have tried to change the menu frequently, but we are throwing darts in the dark trying to find something that will bring in more business.”

For now, debate on the coffee shop has not reached a conclusion. Book Ends “is not currently an issue,” said Senate President Carly Slaught, “But administration is worried that it will become an issue in the future.”

Senate approved the $17,000 CAB semester budget, with a breakdown of $8,000 for four Free Movie Nights, $5,000 for two big events, $2,000 for eight small events,

$1,100 for events held during the Welcome Week, and a $900 contingency fund. Senate approved a budget of $973.01 for Homecoming. A budget of $3,000 was approved to pay for best selling author and documentary film maker, Kevin Hines, to speak on Nov 14, at 7 p.m. in Memorial Hall. Hines, a Golden Gate Bridge (jumper) Survivor will tell his story in hopes to promote suicide awareness, and intrigue others to “love the life we have been given.”

The 2017 Pilster Great Planes Lecture will take place on Sept 28, at 7:30 p.m., in the Student Center. Guest speaker Walter Echo-Hawk, will present “Nebraska Before Nebraska: Our Pawnee Homeland,” a lecture examining Nebraska from a Pawnee Indian perspective. The lecture is open to everyone, and afterwards there will be a question and answer session, as well as a book signing.

Four new senators, Leah Guerrero from Andrews Hall, Aaron Jones from Kent Hall, Trajan Garcia from Brooks Hall, and Corbin Perkins from Edna Work Wing, were sworn in at the meeting as well. A tentative date for the Spring Daze Events was also announced at the meeting. Although the dates are not set in stone, Spring Daze should take place April 9-14.

Curbelo’s alternative to DACA shows promise It’s been all over the news, President Trump’s push to get rid of the DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) campaign. President Barack Obama created the program back in 2008 with the hope of keeping children brought into the U.S. illegally by their parents safe and making sure they have a chance at success. Provided with an education and job opportunities, the majority have built their lives here and don’t know much about their native country, including the native language. They have made the U.S. their home.

We believe that it would be wrong to deport 800,000 innocent children and punish them for the illegal actions of their parents (sometimes committed 20 or more years ago).

This is by no means a black-and-white issue that has an obvious answer. There are questions to be answered, such as, “How many years should you stay here before you’re safe?”, and the immigrants are asking themselves, “How do I get past these U.S. laws?”.

Curt Curbelo, congressman representing the southernmost region of Florida (FL-26) has proposed a solution, called the Recognizing America’s Children Act (RAC). In this act, he obviously sees how these children consider America their home, they are our children. This act would help protect children who have been brought into the U.S. by their parents, and who have lived here since at least January 1, 2012, to gain a five-year “legal permanent residence-status” if they pursue one of three paths to gain citizenship.

becoming a productive member of society, or obtaining a vocational or degree of higher education. If one of these is met along with a few other requirements, they can be protected by the government, while being allowed to travel outside of the country. The few other requirements would consist of completing a background check, having no former misdemeanor convictions, earning a high school diploma (if age allows), and if older than 18 pursuing one of the three different paths to gain citizenship.

Under the “legal permanent resident status”, these children are protected by the government for five years. It may be renewed one time (for a total of 10 years protection) if certain criteria is met. After it is expired, recipients may apply to become a “lawful permanent resident” (otherwise known as a green-card holder) if they continue to meet the requirements.

There are obviously kinks to be worked out and improvements that could be made regarding the RAC. The RAC could be improved, for example, in the fact that one may not work for two years and enroll in a two-year program at a community college. There is also an issue where dishonorably discharged military individuals would not meet the requirements for the military path. We also believe that the bill should provide an opportunity for federal student loans, work-study programs and financial aid for those pursuing a degree of higher education. A better educated work-force creates jobs and is important for our country’s economic prosperity, which benefits all Americans.

Connections pay off in the future John Murphy Reporter Wake up, get out of bed and do something.

Ever since I was a young child my dad has told me to make as many connections as possible. Being 75 years old, my dad has been through a lot of things in his life. He says it was the people he knew and the connections he made through those people that helped him do the things he has done.

I have taken his advice to heart and feel you should too. You can never know too many people, whether they’re friends, family, acquaintances or someone you just know their name in passing. Each and every person you come into contact with may benefit you sometime in your life.

Connections don’t happen by themselves. They come from you going out there and making a name for yourself. Make sure your professors know your name, have conversations with them. Don’t be that student who sits in the back of the classroom and never talks. Say hi to staff members as you walk by

them on the sidewalk, have conversations with cafeteria workers, try to make as many friends, young or old, as possible.

I can honestly say some of the best relationships I have made in my four years at Chadron State have been with faculty and staff. Certain individuals and families that I met my freshman year are like my own family now. They have helped me through three years of school and pushed me to be my best in everything I do. Hey, if you make the right connections, they’ll even have you over for supper. If you’re reading this you know who you are, I thank you for everything.

Without the people I’ve met at college, I would’ve probably dropped out and be living on the streets of Harrison.

Don’t get me wrong though, knowing the right people won’t get you everywhere in life. Being book smart, having good interview skills and common knowledge are all important skills to have. You can’t go into an interview and hope since you know someone who works there you’re going to get the job. If

you totally botch the interview, you won’t get the job.

Never be afraid to start a conversation with anyone. I’m a firm believer in “It’s Not What You Know, It’s Who You Know.” I’ve had so many different opportunities solely because of the people I know. I’ve gotten jobs, made amazing friends and had some of the best moments of my college career just because I decided to introduce myself to someone. Making friends is easy: wake up, get out of bed, and do something. People will talk to ya even if you don’t shower, trust me, I would know.

As Myles Busby once said, “Build your brand while you’re in college. Connecting with different people of different backgrounds will help you open doors and make an impact in the professional work force after graduation.”

Listen to my dad and listen to Myles, they’re right.

Go make friends, go make connections, it’s going to help you now and in your future. Don’t be nervous, wake up, get out of bed and always remember, it’s not what you know, it’s who you know.

Paying for College teaches money management Lydia Privett Opinion Editor Is college too expensive? Should it be more affordable or even free? Yes, college is too expensive. I understand that it’s what keeps a lot of people from going to college, some people simply don’t have the money. But should it be free and/or easily attained?

Absolutely not.

Having to pay for college teaches a young adult real-life money management skills that are crucial to have as an adult in the real world. You learn how to save money and budget, as well as often-times working a part-time job and being a full-time student. Your years as a “broke college student” are so important in your growth and immersion into the real world. Some of the most valuable life lessons are learned in college. These skills learned during your

college years are just a peek into what the real world is like when we’re out there making house payments, paying bills, and still finding money for groceries, clothing, and “fun-money”.

Not only is there value to learning the money-management, but there’s also some value in school not coming easy, that I think is a crucial motivator for students to put forth adequate effort in their courses.

If you weren’t paying anything (or little to nothing) for your courses, do you think that you would care just as much? Would you care as much about failing a course? Would you feel like getting up for your 8am?

When you’re paying for college yourself, there’s that little voice in the back of your head reminding you how much you’re paying for that class. I think it helps students value the classes more.

I liked the attitude that one of my professors had my first semester of college, which was, “I’m going

to give you what you’re paying for.” This was put into action when she had to cancel class, she would post things online for us to do. While my peers would groan about it, I was happy that I was truly receiving what I was paying big bucks for.

Having students pay for college also helps the universities themselves. There’s a reason that 53 of the 100 top universities in the world are located in the United States. Having us, as students, pay for school, we are helping the college further advance their research, hire brilliant faculty members and professors, build bigger and better facilities, and all in all improve the quality of education we, as students, receive.

There are more reasonable and feasible ways to help make college more affordable for students, but ultimately, the most valuable things in life shouldn’t always come easy.

Clean sweep Men’s and Women’s teams win Chadron State Invitational McKenna Jones Reporter The Eagles dominated in the Chadron State Cross Country Invitational on Saturday with both teams coming in first place. CSC competed against South Dakota School of Mines and Central Wyoming College.

The CSC men’s team came in first place with a total score of 16 points. South Dakota School of Mines, Rapid City, finished with a team score of 50 points, and Central Wyoming College, Riverton, finished with a score of 74.

The women’s team finished with a total score of 24 points. South Dakota School of Mines finished in second with 31 points, followed by Central Wyoming College with 85 points.

Head Coach Brian Medigovich said that he was pleased with the results of the race.

“I think the course was set up pretty good and all the teams enjoyed the course,” Medigovich said.

“The men and women’s teams did their jobs.”

Phillip Duncan, senior of Chadron, came in first place in the men’s 8k run with a time of 27 minutes. Riley Howard, sophomore of Anchorage, Alaska, followed Duncan with a time of 27:01 and a second place standing. Eric Yager, senior of Hot Springs, South Dakota came in third with a time of 27:12. CSC runners placed in four out of the five top spots.

Medigovich said that the men ran “more up to par” than the previous week.

The women’s team finished the race with three out of the top five spots for the women’s 5k run, coming in first against the competition. Alyse Henry, sophomore of Rock Springs, Wyoming finished in first place with a time of 19:04. Nicky Banzhaf, senior of Chadron finished in second with a time of 19:18. Julia Eskelson, freshman of Meeker, Colorado, finished the race in fifth place with a time of 20:29.

“Alyse Henry surprised me how fast she could run that course,” Medigovich said. “It didn’t surprise me that she was the number one runner but it surprised me how fast she ran.”

The teams will be traveling to the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis for their next meet. The Roy Griak Invitational starts on September 23, at 8:50 a.m. for women, and at 10:30 a.m. for men.

“We will go really hard this week because we will have at least one week in between training,” Medigovich said. “The week after a previous race is usually pretty hard so next week we can back off a hard week followed by an easier week.”

Despite an impressive aerial assault against the top team in the RMAC, the CSC football team came up short against Colorado Mesa University, Grand Junction, 24-10 Saturday, at Elliott Field.

The Mavericks entered the game ranked No. 17 in the American Football Coaches Association DII Poll, and have moved up to No.11 after defeating CSC. Going up against an offense that scored 49 points in the season opener, the Eagles’ defense was exceptional, holding the Mavs to under 195 passing yards and 192 rushing.

In the previous week, Mesa quarterback Eystin Salum, junior of Denver, threw for 290 yards and five touchdowns.

The highlight reel racked up for the defense, totaling four sacks, one interception, and three pass breakups. DeAndre Barthwell, redshirt sophomore of Westland, Michigan, was responsible for the interception, one of the sacks and a pass breakup that saved a likely touchdown in the third quarter. Keenan Johnson, redshirt sophomore of Chadron, and Brian Wood, redshirt senior of Stockton, California, led the team in tackles with 8 a piece.

Collin Eisenman, senior of Sheridan, Wyoming, and Tyler Lewis, redshirt sophomore of Arvada, California, each recorded a solo sack. Mitch Collicott, senior of McCook, and Garrett Patterson, senior of Jenks, Oklahoma, split the final sack.

Redshirt freshman Dalton Holst, of Gillette, Wyoming, played well in the home opener, completing 41 passes on 73 attempts, with one touchdown, and one interception that was returned for a touchdown. 16 completions went to Jackson Dickerson, redshirt sophomore of Chadron, breaking the school record for receptions in a single game, previously at 15.

Dickerson recorded 137 receiving yards, and was one of two Eagle wideouts to break the century mark.

Brandon Fullerton, redshirt sophomore of Riverton, Wyoming, caught six passes for 122 yards. The only touchdown of the game went to Colton Wright, senior of Albin, Wyoming, a

The opportunities were there for the Eagles, but the offense stalled out several times while in scoring position.

CSC has an opportunity to earn their second win in three games, traveling to Gunnison, Colorado, to play Western State Colorado University, Saturday.

The Mountaineers are struggling this season, on the wrong end of a blowout both games. The first week, the Mountaineers fell to Mesa 49-21, and last week were rolled by Adams State University, Alamosa, Colorado, 51-14. The Eagles play Adams State for Homecoming.

BRIEFS Rodeo team to host first rodeo of CRMR circuit The CSC rodeo team will be in action Friday-Sunday, at the Dawes County Fairgrounds.

The rodeo is the first of the season for the Central Rocky Mountain Region.

Slack performances start at 1 p.m. Friday, and 9 a.m. Saturday.

The performance rounds start at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, with the short-go at 10 a.m. Sunday.

Volleyball team wins 1 in Missouri John Murphy Reporter The Chadron State College volleyball team brought their season record to 3-5 last weekend, after winning one of their four games at the Towneplace Suites Invitational in Joplin, Missouri.

The Eagles opened with a tough loss Friday, losing to Missouri Southern State University, Joplin, in five sets before being swept by Arkansas Tech University, Russellville, Friday night. The lone victory of the tourney came Saturday morning against Maryville University, St. Louis, in three sets before losing in three sets to Ouachita Baptist University, Shawnee.

“It was a good weekend for us seeing

some new competition,” Emily Bruce, senior of Centerton, Arkansas said. “We had a lot of ups and downs through the four games but it allowed us to figure out our strengths and weaknesses as a team.”

In their only game of the weekend that lasted longer than three sets, Missouri Southern beat the Eagles 25-22, 17-25, 21-25, 29-27 and 9-15. Dominika Senkerikova, junior of Uhersky Brod, Czech Republic, led the team with 19 kills, while Aijahnae Springs, junior of Converse, Texas, finished with 16. Madison Webb, junior of Loveland, Colorado, finished with 38 assists. Bruce and Andi Dowell, junior of Sterling, Kansas, had 20 and 18 digs respectively in the loss.

Arkansas State stayed undefeated Friday evening, winning in straight sets 25-

12, 25-12 and 25-12. As a team, no one on the Eagles managed to have double digits in kills, assists, or digs, except Bruce who finished with 13 digs. Arkansas State had an incredible .551 attack percentage in the win.

The Eagles entered the win column Saturday morning, beating Maryville 25-14, 25-20 and 25-13. Senkerikova and Springs once again led the team, both accounting for 11 kills. Timmi Keisel, redshirt sophomore of Fleming, Colorado, finished with eight kills with a .636 attack percentage. Webb had 16 of the teams 33 assists while Mickey Trimble, junior of Platte City, Missouri, had 15. Transfer Megan Chintala, junior of Fleming, Colorado, led the team with 11 digs.

Ouachita Baptist beat the Eagles 25-23, 26-24 and 25-19. Senkerikova finished with 12 kills followed closely behind by Dowell who had 11. Trimble and Webb switched spots from the victory, with Trimble having 16 assists and Webb having 15. Nine different players had digs for the Eagles.

The Eagle’s open their home and RMAC schedule this weekend as they host University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, Friday, and Metro State University of Denver, Saturday. Both games are scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.

“We are excited for the upcoming weekend,” Ashton Burditt, sophomore of Spearfish, South Dakota said. “We are ready for the home support and ready for the start of conference play. Go Eags.”

RLA host Life-Size Angry Birds Event Anh Le Reporter

Last Friday, CSC students had a chance to experience a video game in real life through the Life-sized Angry Birds event hosted by RLA at the amphitheater west of Kent.

Angry Birds has been a famous cellphone game for the last few years. RLA decided to bring this game to life by hosting it as a campus event, which attracted many students. Thirty four students showed up and participated in the event. They were divided by team, each contained three people. Two of them hold the slingshot, and the other one aims and shoots.

Each team had two minutes to knock down as many targets

each round as possible. Many teams were formed and joined the fun despite the fact that the water sprinklers went off at the middle of the game.

Students who attended the event also had chances to win prizes , enjoying snacks and refreshment with friends by the parking lots .

RLA and WHCR raise suicide awareness with a Suicide Prevention Walk Anh Le Reporter It was a nice Sunday evening when students, faculty and family members walked together around campus, participating in the Suicide Prevention Walk beginning at the Clock Tower by the Student Center, to help raise awareness about suicide as well as raising funds for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

RLA and Western Community Health Resources organized this event to bring people affected by suicide together and build awareness within the community about suicide.

Many people were interested in

bringing awareness about suicide to the community in order to help their loved ones as well as themselves. There were thirty one participants including Chadron State College students, faculty, and supportive family members. They all walked together around campus to learn about and show support to those affected by suicide. Members from Omega Phi Rho also helped with the events by holding signs that contained facts and information about suicide at every corner of the route.

Amy Carnahan from the Western Community Health Resources, located at 300 Shelton Street in Chadron, came to the event and talked about suicide. She compared the thoughts of people who have suicidal tendencies to a constant

rain, which only had negative impacts on themselves and others. She also emphasized that suicide was a last resort for those people, not an option. We needed to help each other to prevent the worst outcome.

Cody Cooper, 23, senior of Gothenburg, decided to bring this event to campus independently as a RLA event. “The main purpose of this is to raise awareness about suicide because it does not affect just one or two people but the community as a whole,� Cooper said.

The money raised from this walk will be donated to American Foundation for Suicide Prevention to support people who are in need as well as future research to prevent suicide.
