FOUNDATION FUNDRAISER RAISES $100K

The Chadron State Foundation raised $102,987 during its fall fundraiser that concluded this week.

The fundraiser consisted of 124 volunteers from the community and the college.

Senate discussed CAB meeting changes Nalani Stewart News Editor School of Liberal Arts Senator, Shaniya DeNaieyer, reported to Senate that several constituents brought to her attention some issues they are having with CAB meetings and the punishment for missing meetings.

“Having CAB every week is a big commitment for students who are in several clubs, and have jobs,” the constituents said, according to DeNaieyer. “They feel like the CAB report is the same report as the last two weeks. They also feel that having a CAB meeting every other week or even once a month would allow a longer meeting, and more information, and be a better use of students’ time and commitment.”

The discussion will continue, but for now CAB meetings will still take place on Tuesdays at 6 p.m. in the Student Center.

Senator at large Lelisse Umeta also reported to Senate of a petition that a student conducted regarding CSC’s 14 Meal Plan.

Senate has a current budget of $22, 941.95 in unallocated funds.

AFB, a committee that is responsible for allotting the money,

that students pay each year in activities fees, to fund many of the clubs on campus, is now up and running.

“We are planning on getting the allocation information sheet out before Dec. 1, and no later than Dec. 4 which is our next meeting,” Vice President of Finance Lukas Klueber said. “We are going to end the semester on a good note, and start planning for our spring budget hearings.”

CAB is hosting Casino Night, on Saturday, from 9 p.m. to midnight, in the Student Center Lobby. CAB will also be hosting Christmas themed pool party from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., on Dec. 8.

The next Free Movie Night is Dec. 10. Students should continue to watch CAB’s Facebook, and Twitter pages for the release of the movie titles.

The Spring Daze theme is 90’s nostalgia, and the committee is opening up a T-Shirt design contest to the students.

“We have started reserving rooms for Spring Daze” Vice President Johnathan Sayaloune said. “The next meeting is Sunday at 4, if you want to join us.”

Dr. Markus Egler Jones will host a public reading of his book “How the Butcher Bird Finds Her Voice,” on Thursday, in the Sandoz Center Atrium.

14 Meal Plan Petition CSC student Cody Madrigal wrote a letter addressed to Austin Stephens, Student Senate, The Eagle newspaper, and President Randy Rhine, regarding the restriction of 14 block meal plan. The plan offers 14 meals per week, with access to meals restricted to breakfast from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m., lunch from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and dinner from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Madrigal petitioned in the Student Center, asking students to sign their names if they felt that they disagreed with the meal plan, and “hoped for the removal of this restriction.” The petition received 246 signatures. Senator at large Lelisse Umeta reported to Senate about the petition during the meeting on Monday. Senate, aware of the petition, discussed the letter and decided to table the discussion until Madrigal meets with Dining Services Director Tracy Shuck.

David Kendrick, associate vice president of teaching and learning technologies, and Josh Ellis, associate professor of applied sciences introduced the Faculty-in-Residence initiative they hope to get started on campus next semester.

The basis of the program is that a faculty member will live in a private room among students in a resident hall, offer programing that interests students and facilitate active participation in the student learning experience.

“We are realizing the value of living learning communities,” Kendrick said. “It’s a very enriching experience, but we’d like to take a baby step doing it.”

The ‘pilot’ is proposed to start in Edna Hall during the Spring 2018 semester. The program will start in one residence hall as a test run. After the first semester, there will be an evaluation process to determine the success of the program.

“The reason I was interested in it is the increased engagement with students,” Ellis said. “There seems to be a disconnect between faculty and student a lot of times. We have our office hours but a lot of times students don’t use those office hours. This is one way of moving our office hours to your house.”

Programs offered by Faculty-in-Residence could include book club, movie nights, educational presentations by other professors and study groups.

Even though the program is only taking place in one residence hall, participation is not limited to those living in Edna Hall. All students are welcome to come and participate in events put on by the Faculty-in-Residence. “[The program will] help me determine if CSC is meeting student goals and needs, and help me determine if I’m meeting students’ needs as their adviser,” Ellis said.

CAB representatives asked Kendrick and Ellis many questions about how the program will look on the CSC campus, what the duties of the faculty member would be and what students could expect gain from the program.

CAB opened nominations for Vice Chair of Programming to students have been CAB members for at least one semester. Voting for the position will take place during next week’s meeting, Tuesday, Dec. 5.

Former CSC President Clark Elkins Dies Alex Helmbrecht Director of College Relations Dr. F. Clark Elkins, who was the president of Chadron State College for five and a half years during a time of growth and improvement, died Saturday, Nov. 24 at his home in Jonesboro, Arkansas. He was 94.

Chadron State’s enrollment was 807 in the fall of 1961, a couple of months after he became its sixth president. By the fall of 1965, a few months before he resigned to become president at Northeast Missouri State University, which is now Truman State, CSC’s enrollment had nearly doubled.

Five buildings, the Kline Campus Cen-

ter, the National Guard Armory, Armstrong Gymnasium and Kent and Andrews Residence Halls, were constructed while Elkins was president. Funding also had been obtained for a new heating plant, King Library and High Rise.

Elkins also was credited with recruiting more professors who had doctorates and encouraging faculty already at the college to seek advanced training if it was available.

He took steps to strengthen the college’s accreditation status and helped launch the Chadron State Foundation so students could obtain loans and additional scholarships.

Elkins also helped convince the Board of Trustees of the Nebraska State Colleges and ultimately the Legislature to provide

more funding for employee salaries and benefits and classroom equipment.

Prior to coming to Chadron State, Elkins had been a history professor at Henderson State College in his native state of Arkansas. His initial visit to Chadron State was in the fall of 1960, when he was part of a team that was checking the college’s accreditation. A year later he became its president.

Following a two and a half year tenure as president of Truman State, he was a vice president at Arkansas State University at

Jonesboro for 11 years and Northern Arizona University at Flagstaff for eight years.

He was presented Chadron State’s Distinguished Service Award in August 1989.

Prior to his academic career, he had been a B-29 pilot during World War II, participating in 36 combat missions over Japan.

Elkins is preceded in death by his wife, Norma, in 2012. Survivors include their daughter, Annette; her husband, Paul Bednar; a grandson; a granddaughter; and a great-grandchild, all of Jonesboro.

His funeral will be Tuesday, Nov. 28 in Jonesboro.

Spreading the Bright Side Holiday Spirit On the Rachel Mitchell Columnist The holiday season is in full swing. Thanksgiving, Black Friday and Cyber Monday are already in the books and there are so many more holidays to come.

This can be a wonderful time because it brings out the best in people; but unfortunately it can also bring out the worst in people.

Personally, I try to find the wonderful things in the holidays.

I love drinking hot chocolate with giant marshmallows, playing card games with my friends, seeing houses decorated with lights and, most of all, getting to spend time with my family.

But it’s not always marshmallows and twinkling lights. Sometimes doing the simplest things during this time of year is awful, like going to the grocery store.

We’ve all been in the situation where someone is a little too grumpy and then you are left in a bad mood yourself.

How can we avoid that? How

can we spread a little extra holiday cheer? How could we embrace the holiday season a little better?

Kindness.

It is a simple word that you may have learned at a very young age, but just a little kindness can go a long way.

I came across a quote from Leo Buscaglia that I think sums up the importance of kindness: “Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word... all of which have the potential to turn a life around.”

I try to always be kind, but sometimes my temper gets the best of me. Especially during the holiday season, my kindness tends to be smaller and tested more.

MAN ON THE STREET

This year I am trying a new approach to make this bucket a little bigger. I want to be able to stretch kindness as far as I can this holiday season.

I decided that every time I encounter an individual, I would spread kindness to that person by simply smiling. Each person has a different way of showing kindness, but I have found that smiling is what fit for me.

Although the holidays can be stressful and hard if we show people a little kindness it can make a huge difference.

Even if it’s just smiling at someone at a grocery store. I want to challenge you to try and show some extra kindness over the next week.

I’m not asking you to plaster a smile on your face and try to change that world with it; I just want to challenge you to be extra kind in the environment that you are in.

Whether it be donating to a charity or sending a card to someone you haven’t talked to in a while, every little act of kindness counts.

Reporter The men’s basketball team took a loss at home against Augustana University, Sioux Falls, South Dakota, a non-conference game, on Saturday, 73-53.

The Vikings scored 43 points in the first half with the Eagles falling short with only 16 points. CSC struggled all over the court, especially from long-range, where they only converted on 2 of 13 shots.

CSC shot less than 20 percent in the first half. The Vikings were 46.7 percent with shooting three pointers and 50 percent all in all.

In the second half of the game, the Eagles improved, scoring 31 points to the Vikings 37 points. The Eagles improved to 50 percent from the court and 5 of 8 from behind the three-point line.

Jordan Mills, sophomore of Alliance, finished with nine points in the second half and five rebounds.

Walker Andrew, freshman of Littleton, Colorado, and Adoum Mbang, junior of Yaoundé, Cameroon, who played his first season, game both scored nine points. Mbang was also the leader defensively on the boards grabbing six rebounds.

Jeremy Ruffin, junior of Chicago, was named RMAC Defensive Player of the Week last week for his double-double against the University of Nebraska at Kearney, while grabbing two steals and shutting down the Loper star forward Trey Lansman.

The Eagles are back home this week to open conference play against Colorado School of Mines, Golden, Friday at 7:30 p.m. The Orediggers are ranked No. 6 in the nation, starting the season at 6-0. They were also picked to finish second in the RMAC in the preseason coaches’ poll.

CSC will then follow up with Colorado Christian University, Lakewood, Monday at the same time. The CCU game was originally scheduled for Saturday, but was moved due to RMAC scheduling conflicts.

Saturday’s games moved to Monday Due to an RMAC scheduling conflict, both the men’s and women’s games against Colorado Christian University, Lakewood have been moved to Monday evening.

Both games will still be played in the Chicoine Center.

The times for tipoff remain the same, 5:30 p.m. for the women’s game and approximately 7:30 p.m. for the men’s.

Friday’s matchup against Colorado School of Mines is unchanged.

Ever since “The Fault In Our Stars” I have been a huge fan, so when the movie “Baby Driver” came out, I knew I had to see it.

“Baby Driver” was directed by Edgar Wright, who has directed other movies like “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” and “Ant-Man.” Those who have seen Wright’s movies know that he has a very unique perspective and style as a director. He also loves to incorporate music in his films and “Baby Driver” is no different. In fact, Wright’s incorporation of music throughout the film makes “Baby Driver” worth the watch.

Ansel Elgort’s character, Baby, is a getaway driver who works various robberies for Doc, played by Kevin Spacey. Doc pays Baby graciously after each deal and Baby uses it to support the deaf guardian he lives with.

After a traumatic experience as a child, Baby has a tick that he can only keep quiet when listening to music. He may have his headphones in at all times, but he is very aware of what is going on around him.

His music helps him focus, and is what is used as the background music for almost the whole film.

Along with Ansel Elgort and Kevin Spacey, Wright has collected an all-star cast. Jon Hamm, Jamie Foxx, Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jon Bernthal and Mexican actress Eiza Gonzalez are all different members of the crew Doc recruits for robberies. Sky Ferreira also makes an appearance, along with Lily James, who plays Baby’s love interest, Deborah.

Despite car chases, the plot start out slow.

Wright leaves a lot of mystery throughout the film, like why Baby listens to music all of the time and why Baby is really working for Doc, to be discovered later. Towards the end of the movie, the plot

CSC participates in Giving Tuesday Jacob Rissler CSC Foundation CSC Foundation hosted Giving Tuesday across campus. #GivingTuesday, the global philanthropic event utilizing social media has finished the initial year on Chadron State’s campus.

CSC’s #GivingTuesday encouraged families and friends of current students, friends and alumni to consider supporting CSC with scholarship support with their philanthropic giving.

Pixar presents quality films in 2017 Caleb Wiederhold Cartoonist Back in 2015, Pixar released two films in one year, “Inside Out” and “The Good Dinosaur.” A year later, Disney Animation released another three animated gems, “Zootopia” and “Moana” and the sequel “Finding Dory.”

This year, Pixar released another two films, “Cars 3” and “Coco.”

In “Cars 3”, which is follows “Cars” and “Cars 2,” focuses on racecar Lightning McQueen, voiced by Owen Wilson, getting back on the track. Throughout the movie, McQueen goes through the hardships of being a veteran and receives help with the newcomer Cruz Ramirez, voiced by Cristela Alonzo.

Then comes the Mexican-themed film “Coco,” which focuses on Miguel Rivera, voiced by Anthony Gonzalez. Miguel goes into the Land of the Dead in search of his musical idol Ernesto de la Cruz, voiced by Benjamin Bratt, with the help from a trickster spirit named Hector, voiced by

Gael Garcia Bernal.

What makes these two Pixar films good is the storyline. “Cars 3” focuses on McQueen’s hardships when facing the next generation races; his past times involving Doc Hudson; and his bond with Cruz Ramirez.

In “Coco”, the film’s focuses on family, which is really emotional and touching. Miguel’s family doesn’t like music, because his great-great grandfather left his family behind to share his music with the world. Miguel loves music and tries to get his great-great grandfather’s blessing to bring music back to his family. By the end of the film, Miguel manages to weave his family back together.

Pixar has done their fair share of wonderful sequels, such as “Finding Dory” and “Toy Story 3,” and “Cars 3” is another good. Cruz Ramirez is also good addition to the “Cars” franchise.

“Coco” gives a taste of Mexican culture and I thought the music in the film is good as well.

Pixar gave us two emotional films in the year of 2017 with their sequel and original film. Fantastic job, Pixar.

ni Council (SAC) along with Foundation staff hosted a booth in the student center for students to write thank-you notes to current CSC donors.

Students, faculty and staff also had the opportunity to take an “unselfie” photo demonstrating their support of giving at CSC. #GivingTuesday is about more than just making financial contributions. The Big Event was represented by CSC students to showcase giving time, talent and effort as an amazing way to give back.

SAC helped to educate students on the impact of philanthropy on CSC’s campus as well as the Chadron State Foundation’s Next Horizon campaign. The Foundation’s Next Horizon Campaign is composed of three initiatives: the Math Science initiative, the Sports Complex initiative, and the Scholarship and Program Support initiative.
