There will be a Principle Players meeting Wednesday for next fall’s social work program over sex trafficking in Nebraska. The meeting will be at 8:30 a.m. in Miller Hall Rm. 202. Anyone planning on attending should inform Bruce Hoem, social work program field director at bhoem@csc.edu.

There will be an informational meeting about a May 2018 study abroad trip. The trip will be to London and Dublin. The meeting is at 3 p.m. Thursday, April 20 in Old Admin Rm. 320. All majors are welcome and students can earn up to six credit hours in business, criminal justice, education, legal studies or essential studies.

Activity Fee Board recommends budget allocations Jordyn Hulinsky Managing Editor The Activity Fee Board presented club budget recommendation to the Senate to be voted on at the next meeting on Monday, April 24. Senate allocated nearly $13,000, postponed one allocation, and denied another at the Monday meeting. Senators also heavily discussed offering cords to active club members at graduation.

AFB brought club budget recommendations to Senate.

The recommendations will be discussed at the open forum at 5 p.m. today. The requests and recommendations are in the related graphic.

Senate allocated $1,500 for Cheryl Brown as the 2018 Martin Luther King Jr. Day speaker. The allocation is co-sponsored with RLA. Gabriela Perez, director of the Nearly Naked Mile, proposed an amended budget of $8,772 Monday. The budget is adjusted to remove sweatpants.

Senator and AFB member Teryn Blessin commented that AFB only allowed clubs $50 for incidentals and suggested cutting back another $150 to make the incidentals only $50.

The allocation of $8,772 was passed. The breakdown of the budget is as follows: T-shirts, $3,917.50; advertisements, $811.50; prizes, $3,323; food and drinks, $200; entertainment, $200; trash bags, $120; incidentals, $200.

Senate allocated $2,000 for the Guidebook app. The cost of

the app will be split with the athletic department, RLA, marketing development and Senate.

Senate allocated $300 to provide food at the Tuesday CAB meeting where there will be table discussions about the HPC surveys.

There was also a $280 allocation for the Monday, April 24 Senate meeting because the meeting is expected to be extra long.

After intense discussion, Senate approved the creation of a new standing committee that will be responsible for overseeing graduation cords for club members. There will be a two-cord system with one color of cord for active club members who are graduating and a second colored cord for those who are a part of an executive board of a club. If students are members of two executive boards, they will still only receive one cord.

The original suggestion for each club to get a different color of cord for each club made some senators and constituents uncomfortable because of worries that the cords would overpower the academic cords, especially if a student is involved in multiple clubs.

There were also concerns that the responsibility would fall back on an already over-busy executive board at the end of the year, which resulted in the committee creation.

The discussion ended abruptly with two separate call to questions on different amendments.

of Welcome and will feature an inflatable obstacle course.

Participants will be asked to wash their hands before going on the inflatable and the worker will shine a black light on their hands to show the leftover germs. The committee will also give hygiene handouts to participants. The budget asks for $1,760 for the obstacle course, $1,600; hygiene handouts, $50; and hand washing kits, $55. The allocation will be voted on at the April 24 meeting.

Senate President Katrina Hurley clarified that Senate is looking into donating converters for the automated external defibrillator life packs on campus.

At the Monday, April 3 meeting, it was revealed that the AEDs on campus are not compatible with the fire department’s. Senate looked into purchasing converters, which would make it possible for the fire department to use the campus’ life packs.

The total for two converters with shipping would be about $100.

Senators voted to leave the donation to the administration rather than funding the converters through the Senate budget.

Senate elections will open at noon Monday and will remain open until noon Wednesday. The ballot will be sent to students’ EagleMail accounts. Please see graphic information about elections on page 5.

The Campus Improvement Committee is researching to bring colored printers to High Rise and Edna.

Court of Appeals makes its 1st visit to the Panhandle Brianna Wilson Reporter Around 9:30 a.m., roughly 220 students from high schools in Hay Springs, Sidney, and Chadron as well as students from CSC and Western Nebraska Community College gathered in the Student Center Ballroom to attend the Nebraska Court of Appeals session— the first hosted in the panhandle.

There were also community members in attendance and people with an interest in the cases themselves. The session was broadcast online at chadronstate.tv.

The State Patrol provided security. Every attendee was subject to a rundown with a metal detector.

Cameras and phones were not allowed in the court room.

Chief Judge Frankie Moore and Judges Everett Inbody and Francie Riedmann gathered Tuesday to hear four cases, two were criminal, two were civil, with each case lasting roughly 20 minutes. Handouts were available to the attendees that gave a short summary of the cases to be heard, to maximize the educational opportunities for the students. The cases covered

were State of Nebraska v. Josiah L. Scherbarth (appellant), State of Nebraska v. Crystal J. (appellant), Emil Assad (appellant) v.

Sidney Regional Medical Center, a Cheyanne County Hospital, and Dr. Tracy Pay, P.A., and Panhandle Collections, Inc. (appellant) v.

Douglas Jacobson.

State of Nebraska v. Crystal J. was a case In re interest of Jayden J. and Stevie J., children under the age of 18.

The Emil Assad case was unique because Assad was individually representing himself as well as the estate, his wife, who is deceased.

The morning started with an introduction to the Court of Appeals, given by District Court Judge Russ Harford, what they do and how they work. The students and community members were also informed that the Ballroom was now a courtroom and the same rules would apply as though these arguments were being made in an actual courtroom.

The Court of Appeals consists of six judges, appointed by the governor, which sit in three-judge panels to hear cases. These panels sometimes travel to other cities to hear cases around the state. The Court has attended sessions in Peru, Lincoln, Kearney, Seward, Fremont,

Crete, North Platte and Norfolk.

Harford said the Court of Appeals typically handles around 1,200 cases per year, many are solved by memorandum. About 400 opinions are written by the Court—those cases which aren’t solved by memorandum. Two hundred of those cases are appealed up to the Nebraska Supreme Court. Moore said they try to process cases as quickly as possible, usually cases are finished within a year.

When the judges entered about 9:45 a.m., the audience was instructed to rise. Before the arguments began, Moore made a special call for applause to the CSC justice and legal studies department for its hand in bringing the Court of Appeals to the most beautiful part of the state, Moore said.

Since this was the first college initiative for the Court of Appeals, they put in a special session post-arguments where the audience had the opportunity to ask questions about terminology used during the cases or the procedures used. However, they are “ethically bound to not give legal advice as a judge,” Moore said.

During this session, Moore said there was a deficit of lawyers in “greater Nebraska,” and that

some counties have no lawyers at all, which was perhaps the reason Assad was representing himself in court.

Because of this need of lawyers, there is a “greater number of people who choose to represent themselves,” Moore said.

She also said that cases without attorneys on each side are treated the same as cases with attorneys and the cases hosted in the Ballroom were treated the same as they would have been in the “home” court in Lincoln. Cases in Lincoln, however, are streamed live on NET. On the same subject, she said that the Reta E. King Library has services for landlords and tenants to learn how to represent themselves in court and the Court is trying to get more technology out there to promote access for selfhelp for individuals who want to represent themselves. Low funding, however, presents a problem to this issue and for those interested, people can go to freelegalanswers.com to answer some of their legal questions. Pamphlets for people who were looking to represent themselves were also available at the session.

“Every case at the beginning is treated exactly the same,” Inbody said.

PBL has best showing at state conference From Kelsey Brummels, Phi Beta Lambda Phi Beta Lambda attended the 2017 Nebraska Phi Beta Lambda State Leadership Conference (SLC) March 31-April 1 in Kearney.

This was the club’s third year participating at the conference, and its most successful.

With 15 members competing, the club earned 34 top-five finishes, including 11 first, six second and six third-place finishes.

Students who competed were Stephanie Alfred, junior of Mitchell; Brandi Baker, junior of Neligh; Teryn Blessin, senior of Waverly; Kelsey Brummels, junior, of Ewing; Leyna Brummels, senior of Ewing; Dawson Brunswick, freshman of McCook; Austin Casper, sophomore of Albion; Cody Cooper, senior of Gothenburg; Troy Fields, senior of Halsey; Drew Kasch, senior of Highlands Ranch, Colorado; Lukas Klueber, freshman of Rapid City, South Dakota; Miles McDole, freshman of Red Cloud; Marleigha McDon-

ald, sophomore of Gillette, Wyoming; Molly O’Connell, senior of Saint Onge, South Dakota; and Tierra Snyder, junior of Beatrice.

Eleven PBL members qualified for the national conference competition this summer. The conference is in Anaheim, California, June 24-27.

Students must place in the top three in objective, multiple-choice test events to qualify for nationals. Role play, public speaking and presentation events take the top two competitors to nationals.

In addition to competitive events, Kelsey Brummels, Leyna Brummels and O’Connell earned pins in the Career Membership and Achievement Program (CMAP).

Students have to meet certain guidelines in fields such as club involvement and community service.

Kelsey Brummels completed the director level, Leyna Brummels completed the executive level and O’Connell completed the

president level, the highest level.

Alfred was awarded the statewide Involvement Award for junior/senior level.

Leyna Brummels was named the Who’s Who recipient, an award given to a nominated member from each chapter for involvement and leadership.

PBL showed its balance with new members contributing to 16 of the 34 top-five finishes.

Twelve members will attend the national conference in June. Those attending include Alfred, Kelsey Brummels, Leyna Brummels, Brunswick, Casper, Cooper, Fields, Kasch, Klueber, McDonald, O’Connell and Snyder.

Alfred looks forward to the club’s opportunity in Anaheim.

“After attending two national conferences, I’m excited to share the experience with new members this year,” Alfred said.

The club is planning different fundraisers to help with the trip’s expenses.

Several students had questions regarding why they chose to follow this line of work or how to become a judge and what that job entails.

Moore encouraged students to participate in mock trials, both for the purposes of enhancing speech skills and because she thought it was fun.

The judges hear a variety of cases and Moore said she learns something every day because of this job.

She also said the “legal studies program here is phenomenal.” There is no set path to becoming a judge, other than an individual must eventually obtain a law degree. The job requires a lot of reading, writing and speaking skills.

“The more variety that you get, the better it prepares you to be a judge,” Inbody said. “It’s a feeling of what you think you can do.”

Moore added that learning in the job helps satisfy her “love of learning.” She also said “civility is important” and “the more people you know … the better.”

Being a judge has its trials too.

Moore said they might not always agree with the opinion they present. She said they have “all taken an oath to apply the law that is in our state, even if we don’t like it … It’s not easy making these decisions.”

Clarification from McEwen story The Eagle accurately reported on the Robert E. McEwen v. The NSCS court case in the April 6 edition.

However, we wish to make it clear that although it is true that there were discriminatory complaints filed against McEwen, the advisory board found no evidence of discrimination and the Dawes County District Court supported the board’s finding of no discrimination.

The Eagle snags 7th straight ‘Best Overall’ award The Eagle’s student staff threw the dice this past weekend and rolled a seven when it captured its seventh straight “Best in Overall Excellence” title in the Nebraska Collegiate Media Association’s annual Golden Leaf Awards, presented Saturday, at Concordia University, Seward.

The Eagle’s website, csceagle.com, kept in stride with the newspaper and captured its third straight “Excellence in Digital Medium” award, the NCMA’s highest honor in its Digital Medium Division. (Please see related story on csceagle.com) In the Newspaper Division, The Eagle staff scored points in 16 of 19 individual categories, and amassed 83 points toward its seventh straight “Best in Overall Excellence” award.

The staff captured 11 first-place awards, worth 55 points; seven second-places, worth 21 points, and seven third-places, worth 7 points. The Eagle finished 50 points ahead of The Wayne Stater, Wayne State College, which took second in the overall with 33 points. The Collegian, Hastings College, finished third with 30 points.

“I could not be more proud of the staff,” said Managing Editor Jordyn Hulinsky, senior of St. Paul. “This award could not be won without everyone’s help. Seven consecutive wins is huge, and it says a lot about everyone who has come through this newsroom over the years.”

The newspaper competition is broken into 19 individual categories covering writing and visual presentation, such as design and photography. Eligible entries must have been published between March 1, 2016, and Feb. 28 this year. All NCMA newspapers may submit no more than five entries per category; individual students may enter no more than two pieces per category.

Students from the NCMA’s seven member schools who competed this year earned points for their respective newspapers for placing first (5 points), second (3 points) or third (1 point) in each of those 19 categories.

The points each student earns are totaled to determine which newspaper earns the “Best in Overall Excellence” title. The NCMA awards no more than two honorable mentions per category. Honorable mentions do not earn points.

Ten different student journalists from The Eagle scored points across 13 categories, while the “editorial staff ” garnered points in three other categories.

“I am quite proud of the work these student journalists produce,” The Eagle Adviser Michael D. Kennedy said. “They are committed, hard-working young people dedicated to serving their readers.

“Each week they put their work up for public scrutiny. When they make mistakes—and they do—they endure the ridicule, they don’t cower from it, whine about it or look for someone else to blame. They welcome the criticism, because they know it will make them better journalists, enabling them to better serve their readers. That’s leadership. Exceptional leadership. And after they graduate and enter the profession, I am more than confident they will become exceptional leaders in the communities they serve.”

The Eagle’s many veteran staff members scored the bulk of the points leading to the newspaper’s stellar finish. But a few newcomers who joined the staff within the past yearand-a-half also contributed.

Among those was The Eagle’s Cartoonist Caleb Wiederhold, senior of Hill City, South Dakota, whose Chicken Man and Brad the Bigfoot cartoons, among others, grace The Eagle’s lifestyles pages. Wiederhold captured third in the Cartoon category.

“I was surprised, I did not expect to get third,” Wiederhold said, “well, I expected someone else would get it. But I was wrong.”

Cartoon judge Pamela Olson, section editor of the Journal-Courier, Jacksonville, Illinois, said in her critique that, “Chicken Man is my kind of Super-hero. I like his clueless self-confidence.”

“I’m happy,” Wiederhold said about Olson’s comments. “I just like to put some humor out there, and see some laughs out there. I prefer making people laugh rather than scoring points. But I am happy my cartoons helped out my team.”

Another recent addition The Eagle staff, Stephanie Steele, senior of Osceola, took second in the Special Graphics or Infographics category.

“I am extremely honored because this is my first year as a staff member,” Steele said. “To win an award like this means I’ve learned a lot working on The Eagle, and I cannot wait to apply what I’ve learned to real world situations.”

Judging for this year’s NCMA’s newspaper division was completed by journalists and media professionals at media companies outside Nebraska. Among those companies were Robert Sharp & Associates, an advertising agency in Rapid City, South Dakota; The Wyoming Tribune Eagle, Cheyenne; The Houston Chronicle; The Journal-Courier; The Rapid City (South Dakota) Journal; The Pantagraph, Bloomington, Illinois; The Standard Times, New Bedford, Massachusetts; and The Casper (Wyoming) Star-Tribune.

CAB elects new board Senate may supply AED converters for CSC John Murphy Reporter CAB’s new executive board was voted in Tuesday, with only one current member remaining. The new members will officially be sworn in at next Tuesday’s meeting.

CAB Chair Morgan Carrico ran the election, with current Vice Chair of Programming Trista Schell selected as CAB chair, Kim Hernandez as the new vice chair of programming, while Kristina McGann is the new vice chair of records, Tierra Snyder is the new vice chair of finance and Isabella Irish is the new vice chair of public relations.

There were three nominations for vice chair of programming, two for vice chair of records, two for vice chair of public relations and only one for chair and vice chair of finance.

CAB approved The Ultimate Club as a CAB-affiliated club. The Ultimate Club is a group of students that play games such as ultimate frisbee, ultimate football, Polish horseshoes, kickball and many other games weekly.

Vice Chair of Finance Gavan Archibald announced the total remaining budget for clubs $105,989.04 and the total spent is $107,411.19.

Vice Chair of Records Aaron Eagle reminded students that deadline for Job Bon Jovi’s twitter contest is April 23. The school with the most tweets that have a picture of their favorite college memory with the hashtag “JBJReunionContest” will have Jon Bon Jovi perform his 2016 song “Reunion” at their graduation ceremony.

Preston Goehring, junior of Carpenter, Wyoming, spoke on behalf of Fur Trade Days. Hoping to have more students return in the summer for Fur Trade Days, Goehring asked if any club would be interested in hosting a frisbee golf tournament at the state park.

Blue Key is hosting the “Brain Bowl” at 6 p.m. today, in the Reta E. King Library, and Jazz Band is having a concert at 7 p.m. today in Memorial Hall.

Schell announced topics for the open forum at 5 p.m. today: getting colored printers for Edna and High Rise, members of clubs receiving graduation cords for their efforts in the club, AFB allocations, Spring Daze and the Nearly Naked Mile are all matters that will be discussed.

Melanie Nelson News Editor Senate discussed buying automated external defibrillator converters for the school at open forum Thursday in The Student Center.

Senate would be purchasing just the converter, not an AED, according to Sen. Ashley Goad. The converters are what allow AEDs to be plugged in to the life packs.

The current converters on campus are not compatible with the life packs on the Chadron ambulances.

Goad said it would cost about $100 to buy two converters.

It was decided at the meeting Monday that administration would pay for the converters instead of using student fees.

Next, Senate President Katrina Hurley discussed making a spot or giving special passes to student EMTs, as there has been some issue with the students having to park far away and being unable to respond quickly to emergency calls. A

student said the EMTs are supposed to get to the fire station in less than five minutes from the time they get paged.

Hurley also discussed allocating money to help bring Cheryl Brown, who is affiliated with the Brown v. Board of Education case, to campus to speak on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Senate would be giving between $1,500-$3,000 to help bring Brown to campus.

Hurley said she would have an exact number Monday.

Hurley said the school has decided to renew its contract with Guidebook for the CSC app.

They realized there are more features available on the app, that just aren’t currently being used.

The renewal will cost $6,000, but Senate’s contribution will only be around $2,000.

A representative from the Nearly Naked Mile asked for a $4,720.02 allocation for the event. The budget covers advertising, prizes, food, entertainment, trash bags, staff T-shirts, and contingency. Senate voted on the allocation Monday.

Hurley reminded students of the Spring Daze schedule Friday, April 21 to Sunday, April 23. Starting at 3 p.m. Friday, is a petting zoo in the Andrews parking lot. Construction of the world’s longest taco line follows at 5 p.m. in the Chicoine Events Center. Club booths and games will follow until 9 p.m. when the Mr. and Mrs. Spring Daze pageant begins.

The Spring game will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, followed by The Big Event. There will be a barbecue and country duo Maddie and Tae will perform that night.

Sunday there will be a pool party at the Chadron Area Aquatics Center and Free Movie Night at the Eagle Theater. Hurley said the events are free, but Senate will be accepting nonperishable food items to fill the campus food bank.

Senate has been successful in identifying and solving issues this year. Senators and committees like the Campus Improvement Committee have been proactive at solving issues.

I would like to see Senate bring a wider variety of events on campus.

Senate mainly brings in speakers and I would like to bring in bigger events like bringing the circus back again.

I would like to see Senate strive to increase student involvement, input, and knowledge of Senate.

I decided to run for Senate vice president to help ensure that next year’s Senate has strong, qualified leadership. Through this position, I will be able to inform many students about what Senate does. This position will allow me to increase the variety of events Senate hosts.

America should aim for peace, not war On April 6, President Donald Trump sent 59 tomahawk cruise missiles into a Syrian airbase. The alleged reason being that he was appalled by the chemical attack that the Syrian government launched on its own people, killing more than 80 people. According to CNN, President Trump wanted nothing to do with Syria two years ago, but after a recent statement by his son Eric Trump, it has been discovered this bombing was urged by Trump’s daughter, Ivanka Trump.

While valiant, bombing the Syrian airbase did little except make our relations with them more tense than before. It was nothing more than America sending a message to Syria; everything that was damaged in that bombing could be replaced within weeks. The six casualties caused by the bombing were minuscule compared to the 80 or more deaths that Syrian President Bashar Al-assad ordered against his own people.

As previously stated, two years ago President Trump applauded Congress for not approving former President Barack Obama’s request to strike Syria.

In 2012, former President Obama told Syrian President Al-assad that chemical warfare was a “redline” that must not be crossed. The Syrian president did not take any value in former President Obama’s words, so Obama prepared for attack.

Now, the same reasons that President Trump is using to justify his air strike, are the same reasons former President Obama had when he proposed his air strike in 2012.

Instead, what happened this time was fueled by emotion, and emotion doesn’t prove that there is a plan in place for what happens next, whether that be more attacks or avoiding war.

Some people also believe that this is a way for President Trump to show that he is not aligned with Russia in anyway.

Since Russia has chosen to be on Syria’s side and are currently helping the Syrian president keep hold of his power in Syria. With all of the controversy surrounding President Trump and Russian officials, this could be a way to prove that Trump has nothing to do with Russia. Officials in the Trump administration have issued a statement demanding that Russia stop supporting the Syrian government or face even more deterioration in their relationship with America.

Officials in the Trump Administration have openly stated that Russia does play a part in these attacks and should feel partially responsible for the air strike. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson is set to go to Moscow to talk to Russian officials.

When U.S. ambassador to Russia John Teft said last month in an interview that Tillerson would meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in the near future. Russian spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters that a meeting with Tillerson was not on his schedule, but he did acknowledge a meeting between Tillerson and Russia’s foreign minister.

With an uncertain future, one can only hope that steps are taken to avoid war and to find a peaceful solution between all the involved parties.

Long-distance relationships are a struggle.

My boyfriend and I met in March 2015 and spent little time together before leaving for the summer; we stayed in touch that summer but rarely saw each other. The next August, when we got back to school, we started dating. He graduated at the end of that semester. He stayed around Chadron for a few months, working here, but then he took a job four hours away from CSC, where he is now.

We’ve been dating for almost two years, but the majority of those two years were long-distance. I am now graduating in May and have a couple of job offers, but both are about three hours from where he is. So the distance continues.

We do it, but it is not easy.

Everyone’s relationship will be different, but here are five tips I found that have made my relationship work: 1. Communicate, just not too much…

It is important to talk to each other, about the important things in your life, about the silly events of the day, and about

anything else that might come to mind.

But, you should not shut off the world around you for your significant other, and they should not have to either. Make time for each other, but remember that the people around you are important too, so do not shut them out or ignore them.

My boyfriend and I text each other throughout the day, and we end the day with telling each other the happy and crappy things from the day. We call when we can, but we are both busy so we typically communicate via text, and that is ok. My boyfriend knows that my friends here are important and when I am with them, I do not like to interrupt our time with a call to him, and I know when he is with his family, they are important so I don’t like to interrupt his time with them. So our calls come

when we are both free and typically only last 15-30 minutes. We make time for each other but we do not push others away.

2. Trust.

Plain and simple you have to trust each other. There is really no point in being in any relationship if you do not trust the other person, and that trust needs to be extra tight when we are not able to see each other every day.

3. Do similar things…

When you are apart you can stay connected by doing the same kinds of things, like read the same books or watch the same TV shows. You do not necessarily have to do them at the same time, but just do the same activities so you have something to talk about.

4. …But keep your independence.

I see long-distance as a blessing in disguise because it is difficult, but it allows you to learn to be yourself while in a relationship. My boyfriend and I do watch the same shows and we read similar books, but we both have our own activities as well.

He plays basketball with people from the community twice a week; I take random adventures with my friends. We have the opportunity to learn who we are and we en-

joy things without the other person, which I think helps in the long run of relationships to maintain your personality.

5. Share emotions.

Emotions are annoying. I get it, especially for guys. But when you are not together to see the emotions the other person is going through, it becomes even more important to talk about them. When you are sad that you are apart, say it. When you are happy about something that happened, say it. When you are mad about something he or she did, say it.

When you are proud of something he or she did, say it. When you are excited to see him or her, say it. Get over yourself and start sharing emotions.

But also, get over your emotions and do not hold grudges. The silent treatment is harsh when you are together, but even harsher when you cannot see each other.

So say how you feel and then forgive and move on.

All relationships can be difficult at times, but long-distance relationships can be an even bigger struggle.

So, the struggle is definitely real, but so is chocolate, so maybe send a box to your significant other, I’d appreciate it… hint, hint.

Be open to new experiences

Syerra Wycoff Bagshaw Columnist Being in college and growing in this rapidly expanding hub of cultures has exposed me to numerous ways of thinking and ways of living. I grew up with a set of values that mandated once in a relationship you’re committed to that person and must not look at any adult materials (porn) or other people, as such behavior would be unfaithful and infidelic.

I practiced such relationships while in high school, always waiting for a relationship with a partner to end completely before entering another one, not even speaking to members of the opposite sex lest I encourage temptation. This perspective

changed once I reached college.

When I entered college, I found myself introduced to a wide array of people who were both amazing and inspiring. It was at this time that I was exposed to the practice of polygamy/polyamorous relationships; specifically, I found myself in a relationship with a person who practiced such a lifestyle; not wanting to limit myself, I wanted to experience this new way of life that was different than mine.

I want to define what these terms mean; polyamorous is to engage in sexual or emotionally intimate relationships with more than one person, and the boundaries are really to be determined by the people involved. Some people have relationships that are emotionally intimate with one partner but

sexually free with more than one; while others are less strict and allow for numerous partnerships.

While I’ll keep the details of my own experience to myself, engaging in such a relationship really gave me a new perspective on what it was to be with someone and to love them.

When you’re in a polygamous relationship you’re forced to reevaluate the social constructs of a typical relationship.

These constructs being that “ownership” of the other person, or the belief that because you’re strictly intimate with that person your bond is more significant.

Monogamy mandates this pressure on both partners to never be attracted to, or desire other people; both of which are natural instincts.

Jordyn Hulinsky Managing Editor The Eagles softball team went 2-for-4 against Metropolitan State University of Denver Saturday and Sunday, winning the first games each day and losing the second games.

CSC run-ruled the Roadrunners in game one after four and a half, 11-0; Metro responded in the second game, winning 6-3.

Sunday, the Eagles won in an extra inning 4-3 in game three of the series before Metro returned the favor, run-ruling the Eagles 10-0 after six complete.

“I thought overall our team played super well, but we did struggle a bit against the pitcher in the second games,” Jessica Jarecki, freshman of Littleton, Colorado, said.

In game one, two singles and two home runs in the third allowed the Eagles to go up 7-0. Ellie Owens, freshman of Longmont, Colorado, sent one over the fence scoring Aspen Eubanks, junior of Broomfield, Colorado, and Alyssa Geist, redshirt freshman of Broomfield, Colorado. Taylor Bauer, senior of Rapid City, South Dakota, also marked a home run.

Zoe Humphries, senior of Arvada, Colorado, smashed one in the fourth, scoring Lindsey Karlin, senior of Berthoud, Colorado, to put the Eagles up 9-0 before Eubanks sent her own over the fence.

Kendyl Moody, sophomore of Lakewood, Colorado, scored the 11th run for the Eagles on a wild pitch.

Jarecki, the winning pitcher, threw five complete and allowed only three hits. She walked two, but struck out five.

In the second game, Morgan Wilhelm, senior of Littleton, Colorado, started off scoring for both teams with a home run in the second. Sheyann Ludwig, freshman of Longmont, Colorado, scored the other home run in the game in the sixth. Wilhelm also tallied an RBI in the sixth with a double that scored Owens.

But, MSU brought around five on five sixth to win 6-3.

Mel Herl, senior of Eaton, Colorado, crushed her school record in the women’s hammer throw at the University of Colorado Invitational, Boulder. Her throw of 199 feet, 2 and 3/4 inches bested last week’s mark of 195-10 at the Tom Benich Invitational at the University of Northern Colorado, Greeley.

The invite included competitors from several D-I and D-II schools.

Despite resetting the record, Herl placed second, behind Colorado State University, Fort Collins, sophomore Kelcey Bedard, of Fort Collins, Colorado. Herl’s throw now ranks her No. 3 in the nation, trailing Wayne State College’s Michaela Dendinger, junior of Coleridge, and the University Findlay, Ohio, junior Erica King, of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio.

Dendinger leads the nation at 204-4 while King is second at 201-3.

Herl also placed third in the discus, throwing 152 1/4, while Keri Ruff, senior of Eaton, Colorado, took fifth with a toss of 143-9 3/4.

Ashlyn Hanson, junior of Aurora, placed sixth in the hammer with a throw of 186-1 1/2.

With a leap of 19-9 3/4, Stachia Reuwsaat, senior of Black Reuwsaat Bleidt Hawk, South Dakota, won the long jump. Maddie Brashears, sophomore of Fort Morgan, Colorado, earned fifth with a jump of 18-3 1/4.

Blake Jacobs, junior of Highlands Ranch, Colorado, was the lone CSC placer in the shot put, earning fifth with a mark of 52-6 3/4, while earning seventh in the hammer with a 172-3 1/4 throw.

Kahlil James, sophomore of Colorado Springs, Colorado, took second in the triple jump with a 46-6 mark, just eight inches behind the winner, Colorado State University of Pueblo ‘s Ron Sweeten, sophomore of Falcon, Colorado. CSC’s Dez Smith, senior of Bellflower, California, placed fifth with a 45-2 1/2 mark.

Instead of competing at the CU Invite, the distance squad ran at the Bauer Invite in Rapid City, South Dakota. Dominique Oden, freshman of Anaheim, California, finished sixth in the 1,500m, crossing the line in 5:16.98. Junior Callie Johnson, of Casper, Wyoming, was right behind her, placing eighth in 5:26.3. Freshman Vanessa Sawyers, of Hot Springs, South Dakota, crossed the line ninth, Herl with a time of 5:26.9.

In the 5,000m, freshman Savannah Silbaugh, freshman of Upton, Wyoming, finished second with a time of 20:47.40. Oden received a Did Not Finish in the race.

On the men’s side, Taylor Dick, senior of Douglas, Wyoming, placed seventh in the 800m with a time of 2:03.87. In the 5,000m, Josef Gertner, junior of Fort Morgan, Colorado, earned second with a time of 16:35.76.

The long distance runners will travel to the West Coast for two meets: the Bryan Clay Invitational, in Asuza, California, Thursday and Friday, and the Beach Invitational in Long Beach, California, on Saturday. The throwers will compete in Kearney for the Loper Invitational, Saturday.

“It’ll be some solid competition,” Bleidt said. “There’s some good throwers out in eastern Nebraska that we don’t see very often so it’ll be fun to throw against some different competition.” of the

Novak wins 2 events, earns 2nd in all-around Shae Brennan Reporter Junior roper Prestyn Novak, of Newell, South Dakota, won tie-down roping and steer wrestling at the Colorado State University rodeo in Fort Collins last weekend. Novak was also the runner-up in the allaround cowboy standings with 270 points, only 25 points behind Gillette College, Wyoming, Cowboy Riley James Wakefield sophomore of O’Neill.

“It always feels good to win,” Novak said. “I’m just glad I drew good and made use of the cattle drawn.”

In the first go-round of tie-down roping, Novak won the event with a time of 9.9 seconds and went on to take third in the championship go-round Sunday with a time of 10.3. In steer wrestling, Novak took sixth in the first go-round with a time of 8.2 and third in the finals with 7.7, combining for a 15.9, which was the fastest time of the rodeo.

The men’s team finished third overall with 390 total points, following Sheridan College in second with 420 total points and Gillette College in first with 759 total points. The women’s team struggled and did not place in the top nine.

Only one CSC cowgirl placed in an event. Jessica Applegarth, finished eighth in goat tying with a combined time of 15.5. Jordan Tierney, junior of Oral, South Dakota, just missed placing in barrel racing with a pair of 15.39 runs.

Other CSC cowboy performances included Cody Trump, junior of Custer, Wyoming, who finished fifth in bronc riding, Lane Day, grad student of Bartlett, who finished seventh in steer wrestling; Kellen Washut, senior of Casper, Wyoming, who finished sixth in bareback riding; and Ethan Lesiak, junior of Columbus, who finished fourth in bull riding.

Currently the CSC men are standing third in the Central Rocky Mountain Region with 2,723.33 points.

The CSC women are standing fifth in the region with 1,016.66 points while Gillette College holds first in the region with 2,663.66.

The next rodeo is April 21-23 at Casper College, Casper, Wyoming.

The last rodeo of the season is April 27-29 at University of Wyoming, Laramie, Wyoming. These are the only two rodeos left before College National Finals Rodeo, June 11-17, in Casper, Wyoming. The CNFR has more 400 cowboys and cowgirls compete at the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association each year.

The top three students in each event, and top two men’s and women’s teams from the NIRA’s 11 regions will qualify for the CNFR. “The college finals is the main goal every year in college rodeo,” Novak said. “I’d be lying if I said I do not think about me or teammates making the college finals. But a person has to take it run by run and see what the end result is.”

Reporter The CSC Community Chorus and Concert Choir performed their spring concerts Sunday afternoon at Memorial Hall.

More than 50 people took their place in the seats of the auditorium to hear the two groups perform.

The Community Chorus opened the show with “Old Joe Clark” by Mack Wilberg, this piece, an American Folk song, was upbeat and cheerful. It also featured Karyn Snook on the spoons.

The next piece was a bit slower in contrast and had a more serious tone. “The Turtle Dove” is an English Folk song arranged by Earlene Rentz. The Community Chorus under the direction of Music Professor and Department Chair Una Taylor sped things back up for the next portion of the show, “Per Spellman” which means Mr. Spellman in Norwegian. This song featured Shawn Marie Delinger on the fiddle as well as Taylor’s husband playing the role of Mr. Spellman’s cow.

Yes, a cow; he “mooed” throughout the song.

Another piece featuring Delinger on the fiddle was “Appalachian Fiddler” by John Purifoy. This song was a mix of “Cotton Eyed Joe,” “Cumberland Gap,” and “Goin’ Across the Mountain.” All of which were easy to pick out during the piece. The next song came from Newfoundland. According to Taylor, “Feller from Fortune” was “quite a challenge rhythmically.” The chorus overcame the challenge, however, presenting the dynamic song quite successfully.

The folk song theme continued throughout the afternoon with a ballad written by James Mulholland called “A Red Red Rose.”

It was a beautiful transition into the Community Chorus finale. “Down by the Riverside,” which Taylor called upon the audience to sing along in the protesting song. “I ain’t gonna study war no more” was used quite frequently.

“Choral arrangements of folk songs are some of my favorite things,” Taylor said.

After the sing-a-long, the Community Chorus exited the stage and the Concert Choir replaced them. The men were dressed in black tuxedos while the women were wearing long black dresses.

The Concert Choir led by Joel Schreuder began their part of the concert with a Latin piece called “Cor Meum et Caro” which translates to “my heart and flesh have re-

joiced in the living God.” This was followed by a mass. “Missa brevis in F” was written by Josef Gabriel Rheinberger. The choir sang this a cappella which means there were no instruments used for the piece. Since no instruments were used, pianist Bobby Pace joined the choir in the tenor section for the mass. Schreuder said he “was glad to dig into this piece.” The mass lasted nearly 15 minutes and covered five different movements.

The choir changed it up moving from religious music to three love songs. “I Will Be Earth” by Gwyneth Walker, “Oft Have I Vowed” by Vijay Singh, and finally “The Rose of Midnight” which was written by Z. Randall Stroope. All of these pieces were quite wonderful and showcased the talented students in group.

To end the show, Schreuder’s group sang two spirituals. “Nothin’ Gonna Stumble My Feet” by Greg Gilpin and “I’m A-rollin’” arranged by Paul Rardin were my favorite pieces from the afternoon of music. They were both fairly fast-paced featuring echoing of different parts that really made for a great set.

When Schreuder cut off the final note Sunday afternoon, the audience applauded the two choirs on their shows. Everyone seemed to enjoy the afternoon of music as much as I did.

Heartbreaking series ignites discussion, self-reflexivity Torri Brumbaugh Reporter Young adults across the nation are enthralled with Netflix’s newest series, “13 Reasons Why.” People are flocking to social media to discuss the new hit series.

Based on Jay Asher’s New York Times’ best-selling book, the series focuses on teenager Clay Jensen just weeks after the death of his friend, and crush, Hannah Baker.

Jensen is part of a chain of 13 people linked together by 13 tapes left by Baker. The tapes describe a chain of events that lead Baker to commit suicide. In the tapes she not only reveals the events that lead to her death, but she also explains the roles that the 13 teenagers had in her decision.

Baker instructs each person to listen to all of the tapes in order, then they are to pass the tapes along to the next name included.

Kids create the weather

Hit the trail

Nalani Stewart Reporter “In what ways does weather affect us?”

Each student answered something different.

“It affects what we eat,” yelled one student, “And what we wear, and when we can play outside,” another said.

“Yes, weather affects us in many ways, so today we are going to learn about atmospheric pressure, and how that changes the weather,” the CSC pre-service teacher, Shannon Sonmeder said, to kick off the last Science Saturday of the year in Math and Science Rm. 144, Saturday.

“They’re a little crazy. A little bit of this and that, but they get to have a little educational fun,” Physical and Life Sciences Professor Ann Buchmann said, describing Science Saturday, a program through which students learn through hands-on experiences they wouldn’t normally get in school.

The 14 excited grade schoolers who attended Saturday’s class conducted several experiments to demonstrate how weather changes. The students created precipitation, frost, dew, a barometer, a thermometer, and an anemometer.

In an experiment to see how warm water and cold water mix, the students broke into groups of four, and were given a bucket, hot water, which was dyed blue, and ice cubes that we dyed red. The students, with help from faculty members and CSC students, placed the ice cubes in the water, and witnessed the water turn purple.

“I just love it. There are interesting things to do, interesting things to look at, and interesting things to discover. It’s all interesting,” Chadron Intermediate School student, Lilian Johnareau, said.

“Science Saturday is more than just science,” said Tristian Talkington, fourth grader at Chadron Intermediate school, as the students began to pack up to leave. “Every Science Saturday is a chance to learn something new. It’s a great way to meet new people, and I miss it when I don’t come.”

Science Saturday will continue with its program in August. Classes are from 8:30-11:30 a.m. Sessions are limited to 35 students each.

Students face their fears Kira Fish Reporter Chadron State College students dug through bowls of worms and ate habanero peppers to show their bravery at the RLA-sponsored “Fear Factor” event in The Hub at 7 p.m. Saturday.

Loosely based on the “Fear Factor” television show, the “Fear Factor” event consisted of six different stations, each of which posed a different challenge to the contestants. Participating students used a “Fear Factor” card and received a sticker for that card each time they completed a station. Students who completely filled out their cards were entered into a prize drawing that included a coffeemaker and a vacuum cleaner, among other items.

The six stations were proposed by different Resident Advisers on campus, according to RA Courtney Munger, 20, junior of Newcastle, Wyoming. The station that Munger proposed and oversaw involved participants chewing and swallowing pieces of a habanero pepper, and waiting 30 seconds before taking drink of milk to soothe the pain.

Another nearby station required participants put their hands in a bowl of mud and worms,

searching for a quarter, with a few pennies thrown in as a distraction.

At one station, participating students stuck their feet into a tub of cold water and removed several marbles, and at another, they removed cotton swabs from a tub of cat litter.

There was also a station where contestants removed a dog biscuit with their mouths from the bottom of a can of wet dog food, and another station where students picked three random playing cards out of a lineup and then drank a blended concoction made of three ingredients written on the cards they chose.

A few stations also had secondary challenges. At the worm bowl challenge, participants could eat a worm, and at the dog food station, participants could eat a dog biscuit to complete one of the secondary challenges and an entry into another drawing for a small prize.

“I think tonight was really fun,” Steven Crews, 20, sophomore of Denver, said. “I got to try a lot of interesting and really gross things that I’d never try on my own.”

Crews said that his favorite station was the pepper station, and his least favorite station was the blender.

RLA had pizza and other refreshments for the participants. Around 37 people attended the event.

By Stephanie Steele Tight budgets can make going on far off adventures next to impossible. No one ever said epic adventures have to happen hundreds of miles from home, however. The beauty of a good adventure is making your area your new playground. Chadron may be a small town but its location provides a plethora of options for grand adventures.

Chadron is surrounded by natural beauty that is unique to Northwest Nebraska.

Chadron State Park and the Nebraska National Forest Disconnecting for a weekend and camping at Chadron State Park or the national forest can be a refreshing start for the next week. Don’t have an entire weekend to be Internet free? These locations provide areas for hiking and day use to enjoy some outside time. Great evening activities include campfires and s’mores. Fire rings are provided at most camping locations so there can always be s’more fun.

Deadwood, South Dakota Visiting Deadwood is like venturing into the past with 21st century comforts. One activity is visiting the final resting places of Calamity Jane and Wild Bill Hickok on walking tours.

Finding entertainment in Deadwood is easy with several live performances at the various saloons and casinos. Deadwood also offers several forms of outdoor entertainment like rock climbing, mountain biking, hiking, fly fishing and ATVing.

Toadstool Geological Park Toadstool Geological Park is a geological wonder. Over time, the sandstone and siltstone have eroded away to form rock formations that look like giant toadstools. The area looks like visiting a television set of an old “Star Trek” episode. The color and shapes of the rock formations have almost alien qualities. Finding fossils and Nebraska blue agate are also perks of a day trip to this curious destination. Toadstool is located north of Crawford via Highway 2/Nebraska Highway 71 to Toadstool Road. The park is open 24 hours and costs less than $5 per vehicle to access the park.

Carhenge If you’re looking for a place to take a perfect quirky selfie, stop by Carhenge. Modeled after Stonehenge in the U.K., Carhenge is constructed out of old classic American cars. The structure is even painted grey to look more like Stonehenge.

Carhenge is located outside Alliance and is free to the public.

During the total eclipse on Aug 21., Carhenge will be in the direct path of the eclipse.
