Band Club requests funds for career development Loren Ritter Sports Editor Aydin Mack, junior of Alliance, president of the Band Club requested a one time expense of $450 for the purchase of a series of entrepreneurial online courses for the Music Department.

Club representatives voted and overall, the motion to approve the $450 was passed. $167,669.52 of the budget

for all of the clubs combined is left unspent for this semester.

CAB Chair Kimberly Hernandez, junior of Scottsbluff, stressed at this week’s meeting the upcoming events, “Dine With Us” and free movie nights, as well as the need for senators in Edna Hall, High Rise, Eagle Ridge, BEAMSS, Liberal Arts and At Large. Applications are available in the senate office.

“Dine With Us” is an international lunch hosted by

CSC International Students, featuring student Yen Nguyen from Vietnam. “Dine With Us” will be held Thursday, at noon in the Student Center.

Sunday, Jan. 28 is the first free movie night of the semester at the Eagle Theatre. Doors open at 6:45 p.m. and the movies playing will be “The Commuter”, “Hostiles”, and “The Maze Runner: The Death Cure”. The free movie night dates for the rest of the spring semester are Feb. 18, March 18 and April 15.

The “Dine with Us International Lunch” and Information Session will take place Thursday, from noon to 1 p.m., in the Scottsbluff Room. Hosted by the CSC International Office and Yen Nguyen, students are welcome to come enjoy food from the country of Vietnam, as well as engage in cultural discussions. The cost for members of the community is $7.60 and CSC students can use their meal plans.

CSC CDC selling “Village Pie Maker” pies

CSC President asks students to support

The CSC Child Development Center has announced that they are selling “Village Pie Maker” pies to fundraise for their Nature Explore Outdoor Learning Environment. The CSC Nature Explore Outdoor Learning Environment is meant to help children reconnect with nature and the natural world. Pies are sold for $15 each and payment can be made with either cash or check. The available flavors are: apple, berry medley, blackberry, blueberry, cherry, peach, raspberry/peach, rhubarb and strawberry/rhubarb. Orders will be taken from Jan. 22 to Feb. 9. The frozen pies will be delivered and ready for pickup on Tuesday, Feb. 20, after 3 p.m. in Burkhiser 231.

Senate approves half of CAB spring 2018 budget Nalani Stewart News Editor Senate approved the Spring 2018 CAB budget of $10,000, half of the $20,000 budget they originally requested. The budget is broken down in $8,000 for four movie nights, $6,400 for four bowling nights, $2,000 for Spring Daze Event, $2,000 for the Big Event, $1,000 for two small events, and $600 for miscellaneous fees. The budget was split between two payments.

Senate also allocated $3,000 toward the funding of a speaker, Bryan Omally, for Dr. Madson’s FYI 169 Survival Skills 101 course. The event would be open to the entire campus and the community.

Senate has a current budget of $21,846.40 in unallocated funds.

The court is looking for a new Solicitor General, as well as a new Justice. If anyone is interested, they should

contact Chief Justice Samantha Merrill, or Senate President Carly Slaght.

Aaron Seeger Wood, junior of Mineral Wells, Texas was elected into a senator position.

CAB is hosting a free movie night this Sunday at the Eagle Theatre. Doors open at 6:45 p.m., and CAB is showing “The Commuter”, “Hostiles”, and “The Maze Runner: The Death Cure”.

In another matter, Student Trustee Ashley Goad, junior of Pueblo West, Colorado, suggested a campaign that senate could support tentatively called “They’re just like us.” The campaign is meant to show students that their professors are just like the students.

Director of Assessment Dr. Nesheim announced that the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) reaffirmed CSC’s accreditation based on certain criteria. With this reaffirmation, one of the criteria they look for is that there are outcomes for co-curricular programs, which are sim-

ilar to student learning outcomes that students have in their classes.

“We have a draft definition of what co-curricular programs are and the draft outcomes,” Dr. Nesheim said. “What we are trying to get is student feedback on whether or not you guys think that these outcomes are things we value, things we want to have happen or things that should be happening within the career professional developments.”

Dr. Nesheim asked senate to take a survey to rate and provide feedback on the co-curricular outcomes.

“At some point these outcomes are going to become policy, and they are going to be the outcomes for the institution. Everyone on campus has a chance to take this,” Dr. Nesheim said. “I’m asking for your input and four minutes of your time. Answer it however you feel you should answer it. There’s no right or wrong answer. Your input is very really important.”

Seize the day

Bright Side Rachel Mitchell Columnist As an English literature major I get the chance to read, a lot. I read loads of books and articles every week from all over the world. They range from different cultures and genres each containing something different. To me, there is nothing more amazing than reflecting on what words people thought were important to write down so maybe someone could read them one day.

I recently came upon a story written in 2100 B.C. called “The Epic of Gilgamesh.” There was a quote that sparked a thought in my head.

“Always be happy, night and day.

Make every day a delight, night and day play and dance.”

I thought this quote was beautiful and really captured what life is about: to seize every single day.

The thought that was sparked is:

are we really told to seize the day in this day and age? I realize that far too often we are simply expected to go through a certain set of steps and that is called “life.” We are expected to go to school, graduate, get into a good college, get a degree, get a job, get married, get a house, raise a family and work until we retire.

I think this is what society expects from us, but what happened to taking advantage of every single day we are given? Are we too busy trying to check these things off our to do list to make time for small adventures and good memories?

MAN ON THE STREET

we asked:

This quote made me think about all the people I know that are trying to rush through this journey without stopping to sightsee. If you feel like you are someone who maybe does not take advantage of every single day, I have a challenge for you.

This week, I challenge you to do something you don’t normally do.

If there’s snow get some friends together and go sledding. Try a new restaurant instead of going to the same place and ordering the same thing. If you don’t normally read, pick up a short story. You could invite some friends to go bowling.

Call an old friend and catch up.

Write a letter to your parents or grandparents. Plan a weekend getaway with your friends.

To be honest, the possibilities are endless. Take advantage of the day and try something new. You never know if you will get the same opportunity tomorrow.

Seize the day my friends.

“It’s better to be busy than bored” Lydia Privett Opinion Editor I was raised on the fact that being busy is always better than being bored. In high school, I was involved in over thirteen clubs and organizations. My junior and senior year, I also worked three jobs.

It wasn’t easy, but I’ve always preferred being busy than bored. It helped prepare me for the busyness of college, as well.

It’s important for your emotional health. Whether the busyness is from a social life or academic and community involvement, it’s always better to be able

to occupy yourself.

When there is stress occurring in one’s life, one of the best coping methods research has found is to occupy oneself with other healthy activities. Studies have also shown that busy people are

happy people. If one has a balance between staying busy and having time to recharge, they are more likely to be emotionally healthy. It provides one with a feeling of purpose in life.

How can it make you healthier? At the end of the night, after a busy day, the body is more exhausted and you sleep better. It can also help strengthen your immune system.

The most important thing, however, is to keep busy with activities that you enjoy. If you occupy yourself with things that you hate, you’ll only be more miserable (obviously).

Find a fulfilling job on campus John Murphy Reporter As I enter my final semester of college, as some of you may be as well, it’s time to start reflecting on some of your favorites memories. While some of you might remember late night McDonald’s runs or dressing up for home athletic events the best, some of my favorite memories have happened at my different jobs.

While having four different jobs on campus, I’ve able to experience many things that I will always remember.

Being a student ambassador, I have met some very outstanding people who have visited Chadron State. It’s always nice seeing someone you gave a tour to come to campus for New Student Orientation in August.

Other jobs of mine have also

brought memories I’ll have for a very long time. Working for athletics or being a parking cop have all been great moments of my college career. From what I can tell, most jobs on campus would be the same way.

The supervisors at on campus jobs go out of their way to make sure you’re doing alright. Instead of just being your boss, they make sure you know they care. They keep up with everything happening in your life and make sure everything is ok. If something comes up, don’t worry, they completely understand.

For all students, no matter what grade you are, I highly recommend getting an on-campus job. They help builds skills and connections that you will have for a lifetime. The best part, you get payed for it.

There are over 50 jobs for students

to have, whether you qualify for work study or not. Every single one of them works around your schedule as well.

I’ve worked with multiple people who are college athletes but still have time to work.

With college being full of distractions, having jobs is a great way to stay busy. Last semester, while working 35 hours a week, I was more focused on my schooling than I have been in a long time. They keep you focused and help you make your college a better place.

I highly recommend finding a job on campus sometime during your college career. They will work completely around your schedule, you’ll make friendships and learn things you’ll have forever and you get paid while doing it.

All broke college students can always use extra money, so go out and earn it yourself.

sport, getting involved in a career-related club, or joining community choir or band. It can also benefit your social life as well by meeting new people or getting involved with your friends.

One of my favorite things about being busy, is that when I have some down time, it’s easier to justify an episode of Netflix or personal reading to myself. When you’re doing more things instead of sitting in your room in between classes watching Netflix, it’s easier to justify a quick episode of “Grey’s Anatomy” to yourself at the end of the day before you crack-down for a couple hours of homework.

The Chadron State women’s basketball team moves to 3-16 after losing two conference games at home this weekend.

“We still go into every game expecting to win, regardless of our record,” Head Coach Janet Raymer said.

The Eagles fell to the Adams State University Grizzlies on Friday in a close 77-74 loss. The Eagles hoped to bounce back on Saturday as they took on the Fort Lewis College Skyhawks. The Skyhawks came out on top and beat the Eagles 78-66.

Senior Kalli Feddersen of Rawlins, Wyoming, led the team in scoring on Friday with 23 points. Feddersen made 13 out of 16 free throws, which made up the bulk of her points. Freshman Taryn Foxen of Aurora, Colorado, was second in total points, scoring 17 for the night.

“She’s had some good games in the past, but she’s really becoming more consistent,” Raymer said about Foxen.

The Eagles shot at 48.1 percent on Friday, making 26 of their 54 attempted shots, their best percentage of the weekend.

Feddersen also led the team in rebounds, grabbing eight total rebounds, all on defense. Foxen grabbed six rebounds on Friday, four offensive and two defensive. Savannah Weidauer, junior of Pleasant Grove, Utah, also grabbed six rebounds, two on offense and four on defense. The Eagles rebounded 43 times during the night, 11 on the offensive side and 32 on the defensive side, their best of the weekend.

The Eagles turned the ball over 45 times this weekend while their opponents turned the ball over a total of 29 times. The Grizzlies scored 26 points off of the Eagles turnovers, while the Skyhawks scored 23. Turnovers have been a weak spot for the Eagles this season and it will continue to be a focus for them as the season continues.

“We’ve gotten better, but haven’t quite gotten where we need to be,” Raymer said.

Foxen led the Eagles in scoring on Saturday night against the Skyhawks, racking up 25 points for the night, a personal best for the weekend. Feddersen scored 16 points for the Eagles. The team shot at a 34.8 percent, making 23 of their 66 shots.

Weidauer led the team in rebounds, grabbing 11 throughout the night, two on offensive and nine on defensive. Foxen achieved her first double-double on Saturday, getting 10 rebounds, three on offensive and seven on defensive along with her 25 points. The Eagles had a total of 42 rebounds, 14 on offensive and 28 on defensive.

The Eagles are on the road for two conference games this weekend.

They will take on Colorado State University-Pueblo Friday night in Pueblo, Colorado. The Eagles will then travel to Las Vegas, New Mexico, to take on New Mexico Highlands University on Saturday.

CSC Men hoopers take two losses at home CSC loses to Adams State Grizzlies and Fort Lewis Skyhawks, 82-70 and 96-69 BriYanna Lyon Reporter The men’s basketball team had two home games this weekend playing on Friday and Saturday.

On Friday, the Eagles played the Adam State University Grizzlies. They lost with a score of 82-70.

Although the Eagles shot 87 percent from the free throw line that was not enough for them to win this game. The men were outmatched in the low post with Michael Johnson, sophomore of Nassau, Bahamas, and Adoum Mbang, junior of Yaounde, Cameroon, both being out once again.

Jeremy Ruffin, junior of Chicago, and true freshman Walker Andrew of Littleton, Colorado, were the two big players available for the Eagles. They played the low post position that fought off the disadvantage of the Grizzlies’ four big players.

Five Eagles scored double digits. Ruffin had a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds, and Dru Kuxhausen, freshman of Scottsbluff, scored 16 points. Andrew and Jaisean Jackson, junior of Denver, both had 10 points.

On Saturday, the men played Fort Lewis College.

The Eagles had a rebounding average of 22 to the Skyhawks 14 but that did not help them. The Skyhawks put more than two-thirds of their shots up in the second half which resulted in the final score of 96-69.

Jordan Mills, sophomore of Alliance, was five of eight from the three-point line and finished the game with 19 points. Ruffin was the only other Eagle who had stats in the double digits with 17 rebounds and five points. Matt Reader, senior of Appleton, Wisconsin, joined his team late, after a family emergency. Johnson and Mbang were both present but not able to play.

Martens breaks Eagle record in weight throw standings Justin Brester Reporter The Eagle track and field athletes participated in Brookings, South Dakota on Friday, at the South Dakota State University Division II Invitational. There were 22 schools and more than 900 athletes who competed this year.

The Eagle women were 11th in the team rankings over the weekend. The top performers for the women included Ashlyn Hanson, senior of Seward, who placed second in the weight throw. Hanson posted a throw of 60 feet, 1 ¾ inches, which is her career best and third on the all-time list at Chadron State. Ashton Hallsted, sophomore of Casper, Wyoming, placed third in the same event with a throw of 58 ½ feet, 6 inches. Whitney Riesen, freshman of Scottsbluff, ran the 5000-meter race, and placed fourth with a time of 18 minutes, 18.57 seconds, putting herself in third place on the all-time list at CSC for this event.

The Eagle men placed fifth in the team standings. Cory Martens, junior from Newton, Kansas, set a Chadron State record in the 35-pound weight throw with a mark of 61 feet, 10 ½ inches. Martens throw earned him the top spot in the event by more than 2 ½ and broke the Eagle record by nine inches.

Isaac Grimes, freshman of Rancho Verde, California, won the long jump for the Eagles. His winning jump was measured at 23-feet, 9 ½ inches. Grimes competed in the 400-meter dash as well and finished fourth with a time of 49.25 seconds.

Other top performers for the Eagle men included Blake Jacobs, senior of Littleton, Colorado placed fourth in shot put with a throw of 50 feet, 8 ¼ inches. Justin Leman, sophomore of Douglas, Wyoming, earned a fifth place finish in the 60 meter high hurdles finishing in 8.48 seconds. Dwayne Williams, freshman of Rancho Verde, California, placed sixth in the triple jump at 47 feet, 1 ½ inches.

The Eagles will be back in action on Feb. 2, when they head to Boulder, Colorado for the CU Open.

MINUTE TO WIN IT RLA challenges students to six time-based competitions Katelyn Lambert Lifestyles Editor Students went head-to-head in a minute or less to compete for a variety of prizes, last Friday in The Hub. RLA hosted “Minute to Win It,” an event where students had a minute to complete various tasks inspired by the television show, “Minute to Win It.” Mariah Nelson, assistant director of residence life, decided to bring this event back after hosting it in the past.

“It was something that I thought would get a lot of people involved,” Nelson said.

Six games were set up throughout The Hub, and each game was ran by an RA working the event. The winner of each round would get a signature from the RA in charge of the game.

Once a participant earned every RA’s signature after winning each of the six events, they were then entered to win a prize.

Some of the prizes given away throughout the night included an ottoman, the game Catchphrase, Tide Pods, some mugs and candy.

“I think [the program is] a lot of fun,” Jacob Otvafi, 20, junior of Sparks, Nevada, said.

One of the stations had a row of plastic cups lined up, and two competitors would

face off to see who could push the cups off of the edge of the table. The catch? Competitors had to blow up a balloon and use the escaping air to push the cups off of the table’s edge.

At another station, students had to complete a 24-piece puzzle in ninety seconds.

Competitors also had to knock over water bottles using pantyhose attached to their heads.

The event competed with Friday night’s basketball game at the Chicoine Center, which provided for poor turnout early on in the night. But, more participants arrived after the basketball game had finished.

RLA’s next sponsored event is “Fantastic Contraption,” tomorrow night in The Hub.

“Grey’s Anatomy” deemed binge-worthy Reporter “Grey’s Anatomy” is a show that everyone has at least heard of, if not seen. Season 14 was just released last Thursday, Jan. 19, and people are still just as excited about this season’s premier as they were when the show first started.

What is it that makes this hit medical TV show so popular? I think there are many things that have made the show a cult favorite. The series focuses on a group of Seattle doctors, who we watched start as interns and have now become the seasoned, great doctors we see on the show today.

Growing with the cast and seeing all the crazy ups and downs that the show has to offer draws its audience in week after week. With its suspenseful cliffhangers and its heartbreaking tragedies, the show always has a way of leaving you wanting a little more “Grey’s.”
