EAGLES FOOTBALL SET FOR FINAL HOME BOUT In their final home game of the regular season, the CSC Eagles play host to New Mexico Highlands.

Ranked eighth in the RMAC, the 3-5 Cowboys put an end to a five-

game losing streak, Saturday, with a 53-52 defeat of South Dakota Mines.

Earlier this season the Cowboys defeated Adams State 65-37.

Thirteen senior CSC players will be recognized prior to kickoff at noon.

Spending restrictions on horizon for clubs Shannon Schneider Reporter CAB Adviser and Student Activities Coordinator Megan Northrup announced that CAB will be restricted on spending.

An email from the System Office, the office which presides over the Nebraska State College System, stated the colleges will be under an indefinite “halt” regarding certain expenses.

Club purchases through places like Amazon will have to be purchased for the clubs and reimbursed through the CAB account.

Northrup said that monies for trips are also under this halt, and when more information becomes available decisions can be made.

“With trips and different things, because of

this email we received, we just need a lot more information from [the System Office] before we can give you guys more information,” Northrup said. “But trips and different scenarios we might have to work together and figure out this potential change.”

Northrup also announced a leadership training scheduled for Saturday, November 3, from 1-4 p.m. The training, which Northrup called a “hands-on workshop,” is open to all clubs and students and will provide opportunities for club members to work together. A free booklet and certificate will be provided. If club members and students are interested in attending, contact Northrup.

Student Trustee Dawson Brunswick, 20, senior of McCook, reported, Monday, the Chadron State Foundation received a $500,000

grant from the Sunderland Foundation to go towards the renovation of the Math and Science building.

CAB Chair Kimberly Hernandez, 21, senior of Scottsbluff, announced a haunted house will be held on Saturday. The event, called Bloodcurling Brooks, will be held in Brooks Hall from 7 p.m. to midnight. Hernandez said CAB is still looking for volunteers for the event, with varying times available for students to offer their time.

“The time commitment varies from 5 p.m. to midnight. If we have enough volunteers we’ll be able to switch out with each other, so everyone won’t have to stay all night. It would be super cool if we had a lot of volunteers to make this a successful haunted house that we could have for the first time in a while,” Her-

nandez said.

Decorating will start this week at 3 p.m. and will be held every day leading up to the event. If students wish to be added to the volunteer list they can speak to Hernandez or any member of the CAB executive board.

Vice Chair of Finances Isaac Langan announced that clubs have spent $19,196. Allocated funds that have not been spent total $115,959.99.

Vice Chair of Programming Hannah Fessler reported Sunday’s Free Movie Night had a “really good turnout” with 234 people attending.

Painting in the Library will be held from 2-5 p.m. on Thursday in the library.

The next Free Bowling Night will be held from 6-9 p.m., Sunday, November 11, at Hilltop Lanes.

Senate to evaluate and implement Homecoming changes Devin Fulton Reporter Senate reflects on the success of Homecoming week, Monday.

With mixed reviews on events during homecoming week, Senate said they should start making improvements now rather than waiting until next year to introduce new ideas.

Lukas Klueber, junior of Rapid City, South Dakota, mentioned the possibility of using more of the community in the parade, such as recognizing

awarded to each club’s graduating executive board members.

The stoles and cords recognize graduates’ involvement in academics as well as extracurriculars.

Currently, Senate has $55,130 in unallocated funds.

Senate approved $440 for seven senators to travel to Wayne State College, November 1-2, to listen to keynote speakers and attend workshops.

Senators passed a motion requiring clubs to submit fundraiser forms one academic month prior to their event.

The War Eagles’ seed money request for $1,041 was approved by senate to cover the cost of meals, at $17.35 per meal, for their annual fundraiser. War Eagles will sell plates for their dinner to raise the funds. This will be a formal dining meal on campus and there will be a speaker at the event.

Sunday, CAB hosted 234 students for Free Movie Night at the Eagle Theater.

Due to missing CAB meetings, Choir, NOCS, Omega Phi Rho, Pre-Vet and The Nest will receive a 5 percent budget cut.

The cut will come from each organization’s remaining budget.

From 7 p.m. to midnight, Saturday, RLA and CAB will be sponsoring Bloodcurling Brooks, a haunted house set up in the Brooks residence hall to give students a chance to take part in Halloween festivities.

RLA and CAB are looking for volunteers to help with scaring residents. Anyone interested in volunteering should contact the head of CAB Kimberly Hernandez, junior of Scottsbluff or associate director of RLA Taylor Osmotherly, 23 of Crawford.

Humanities Nebraska talks journalism and democracy Katelyn Lambert Lifestyles Editor

Anna Staver, a political reporter for The Denver Post answers a question asked during “An Issue of Trust: Democracy and the Future of Journalism”, Thursday.

Journalism and democracy were the topics of discussion Thursday night when 180 people participated in a town-hall style meeting, Oct. 18 at the Midwest Theater in Scottsbluff, to discuss the current state of journalism in the United States.

“An Issue of Trust: Democracy and the Future of Journalism” is a series of six meetings, presented by Humanities Nebraska, held throughout the state to start a dialogue between the audience and a panel of journalists on journalism and its connection with democracy.

Thursday’s meeting was the second of six, and the panel featured Charlie Brogan, news anchor for KFOR FM103.3; Clark Kauffman, investigative reporter for The Des Moines Register; and Anna Staver, political reporter for The Denver Post. The meeting was moderated by former journalist Steve Chatelain.

For an hour and a half, the audience and panel exchanged their thoughts on the current state of journalism and navigating what is accurate journalism and what is not.

“There’s a variety of quality, and that’s just a fact of life,” Brogan said.

The conversation primarily focused on the job of journalists, with audience members asking questions on how to

distinguish news from entertainment, editorials from news and how to ensure the news they are receiving is accurate.

The question that provided the most vocal response was from Wally Randall, of Scottsbluff. Randall asked why the press appears biased toward certain political groups. The reference Randall gave was the press’s apparent approval of President Barack Obama and disapproval of President Donald Trump.

Kauffman responded saying the role of the reporter isn’t to act as a stenographer. A journalist’s job is to report on what people say and do, rather than regurgitate what was said in a press conference.

Other audience members shared their stories of previously seeing inaccuracies regarding themselves published in a news publication. The panelists offered potential solutions, such as contacting the editor of the publication and notifying them of the false information.

Staver said she wasn’t surprised that the questions were mostly pertaining to trust between journalists and the public.

“Public trust in the media is at historic lows,” she said. “I hope by explaining how we use anonymous sources, think about our own biases and work through coverage decisions we helped foster a little more trust with the audience.”

The next meeting will be on Oct. 30 in Omaha at the UNO Milo Bail Student Center.

Foundation receives donation for Math Science Initiative Torri Brumbaugh Co-Editor The Chadron State Foundation received a $500,000 gift from the Sunderland Foundation in support of the Math Science Initiative.

Chadron State Foundation Chair Marjean Terrell announced the donation during the annual Chadron State Foundation Dinner, Friday.

“That gift along with the other support for this project takes our total to $1,576,500

for the Math Science building. We’re so close to making this happen,” Terrell said.

As part of the Next Horizon’s Campaign, the Math Science Initiative focuses on renovating and updating the Math and Science Building. The building has not undergone renovations in 50 years, said Terrell.

“The Math Science building was built in 1960 and has had minimal updates in it.

With the emphasis across the board in the science math, we have to step up to the plate and try to get something going on,” Terrell said.

The Math Science Initiative is $25 million project requiring $4 million in “private and

college support,” said the Foundation’s Next Horizon page. Chief Executive Officer of the Chadron State Foundation Ben Watson said this donation means $1.57 million has been raised toward the goal.

“We are well on our way to meeting our goal,” Watson said in a press release, Monday. “The Math Science Building is a second home to its students, and the faculty in those disciplines assist in the development of many of western Nebraska’s medical professionals and teachers.”

Terrell said, “It is rewarding to have so many partners endorsing this project. Western Nebraska, and really the entire state of

The International Lunch Hour, noon-1 p.m. today, Scottsbluff Room, features a Cubano flavor when Associate Professor of History Tom Smith talks about the “Cuba Experience” - past, present and future.

Smith, who’s led two trips to Cuba, 2014 and 2016, said Wednesday morning that he will discuss Cuba’s culture and life, provide an update on the current political climate between Cuba and the U.S. and discuss the upcoming trip he expects to lead to Cuba in spring 2019.

Sponsored by the International Office, which falls under the perview of Sherry Douglas, vice president of student services, the International Lunch Hour is open to the college and Chadron communities. Title IX Coordinator Ted Tewahade said Douglas was off campus Wednesday and had asked him to send out a notice about this week’s lunch hour. Tewahade said CSC students with meal plans may use their EagleCard; the cost for CSC employees is $5.90; the cost for students without a meal plan and for community members is $7.85.

Art profs exhibit ‘Landscape, Place, and Identity’ ends Nov. 9

“Landscape, Place, and Identity: Two Visual Artists Respond to the Plains,” an exhibit by Art Professors Laura Bentz and Mary Donahue, which opened Sept. 17 at the Mary Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center, continues through Nov. 9. Gallery hours are 10 a.m.-noon and 1-4 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and 10 a.m.-noon Friday.

Annual Haunted Trails Run

The annual Haunted Trails 5K walk/run sponsored by The Chadron Community Recreation will be held on Oct. 30 at 6 p.m. The race will start and finish at the NPAC. Entry fees for those 13 and over will be $20. For participants 12 and under the cost will be $15. Prizes will be given to participants with the best costume in the following categories: scariest, most original, funniest, and best group costume (groups must be three members or more).

Music department’s Tebbs to perform guitar recital Friday

The CSC music program present’s McKay Tebbs in a faculty guitar recital 7 p.m. Friday in the Mary Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center’s Chicoine Atrium. Accompanying Tebbs several music department faculty featuring Joel Schreuder, vocals; Michael Stephens, saxophone; Rick Puzzo, drums; Brooks Hafey, piano; John Wojcik, trumpet; and non-faculty member Kassy Schrader, bass.

According to their website, the Sutherland Foundation was founded in 1945 and is based in Overland Park, Kansas. They have “focused on supporting construction projects, awarding grants to nonprofits in the Kansas City region and other markets,” including Kansas, Nebraska, Arkansas, Iowa, Missouri and more. In 2017, they gave over $10 million to over 45 higher education organizations for projects, such as the Math Science Initiative.

Over 40 organizations, including school districts, hospitals and local employers, have donated toward the Math Science Initiative.

Theatre department implements reserved seating in Black Box Katelyn Lambert Lifestyles Editor Admission to Chadron State College theatre performances is now free to all interested in attending shows in either the Memorial Hall Auditorium or the Black Box Theatre, according to Scott Cavin, associate professor of visual and performing arts.

“The idea for free admission was developed and implemented very quickly,” he said. “It is based on of the desire to streamline the process of attending a CSC Theatre production.”

Previously, performances were only free to CSC students, faculty and staff. Off-campus patrons interested in attending performances had to purchase tickets either the night of or in advance by contacting the Box Office.

Additionally, the CSC Theatre program developed a reservation system for Black Box Theatre seating.

The Black Box Theatre, located on the second floor of Memorial Hall, has limited seating between 60

and 90 seats. This reservation system will give patrons the opportunity to reserve a seat in the Black Box, as well as choose where they will sit for the performance.

In the past, patrons would have to show up early to ensure they would get the seat they wanted. Now, those attending can instead stake their claim on their seat in advance.

To reserve tickets online, visit www.csc.edu/vpa/theatre/ and click on the “Reserve Seats” button next to the production you are reserving tickets. Then, fill out the form and select the seats desired.

This system is for all patrons interested in reserving seats before the show.

“By reserving seats, we hope to accommodate the most people without turning away audience members on the night of the performance,” Cavin said.

Prior to the show, tickets will still be available for purchase at the Box Office on a first come, first serve basis.

The next show this season is “Criminals in Love.” This show is for mature audiences, and will run Nov. 15-18 in the Black Box Theatre.

Simply registering to vote isn’t enough.

According to the official report of the 2014 Nebraska General Elections compiled by Nebraska Secretary of State John A. Gale, only 552,115 of the 1,158,840 registered voters in the state of Nebraska submitted ballots in the last midterm election. In Dawes County, only 2,786 of 5,983 registered voted. That is less than half of the already registered voters.

So why is it that 20-somethings would rather participate in Twitter polls than cast a ballot for government officials?

We believe that a large part of why college students don’t vote is because they don’t know who or what they are voting for. The midterm elections are often seen as obsolete in comparison to the presidential election. But the truth is, the party that holds the majority seat in Congress can have a greater impact on our government than the president alone.

Midterm elections happen halfway between a presidential term. During the midterm elections, we elect one third of U.S. Senators, which is 35 seats this term, and all 435 members of the U.S. House of Representatives. A party needs 219 seats to take the majority in the House and 51 seats in the Senate. Republicans currently hold the majority in both the House and Senate with 237 and 51 seats, respectively.

So here are what Nebraska voters will be voting for in the upcoming midterm election: Representative for Congress in District 01, 02 and 03; State Treasurer; Attorney General; United States Senator; Governor and Lt. Governor; Auditor of Public Accounts; Public Service Commissioner of District 01 and 03; Secretary of State; 11 members of the Legislature; State Board of Education; State Board of Regents; Judicial Retention for the Supreme and District Courts; Community College Board of Governors; Learning Community Coordinating Council; Natural Resources District Representatives; Public Power District Representatives, Reclamation District Representatives; Educational Service Unit Representatives; and Initiative Measure 427.

Initiative Measure 427 states, “A vote ‘FOR’ will amend Nebraska statutes to provide that the state shall amend its Medicaid state plan to expand eligibility for medical assistance to cover certain adults ages 19 through 64 whose incomes are one hundred thirty-eight percent (138%) of the federal poverty level or below as defined by federal law, and to maximize federal financial participation to fund their care.”

voting for. Your vote in the midterm election will have a direct influence on your healthcare, gun reform, student loan policy, LGBTQ rights, Supreme Court nominees and so much more.

Many people expect to see a huge ‘power shift’ during this election. Many are afraid that the recent push across social media to get especially the younger generation registered to vote will lead to an uneducated election.

Anyone who chooses to follow and vote for candidate, blindly, based solely on political party is an uninformed voter, young or old. It is important to do your research, and make sure the candidate you choose to cast your vote for will represent your values and needs at the local, state and federal levels.

When you decide not to vote you are making a choice to let other people speak for you, people you may not agree with.

Would you let someone speak for you when it comes to your views of sexual assault, LGBTQ rights, gun rights or first amendment rights? No. If you are registered to vote, mark your calendars for Nov. 6, find your polling location and go vote. If you are attending CSC far from home, send in your absentee ballot form and vote. Early voting has already begun, there are no more excuses.

Congratulations to all who have survived the first half of the semester! It might feel like you barely made it but hey, you made it. Hopefully you were successful the first eight weeks and can power through the next eight weeks.

As the weather starts to get colder and flu season starts to amp up I want to bring a few helpful tips on how to take care of yourself this year.

One of the most underrated methods of staying on top of your health is hydration. Not soda or energy drinks but simply nourishing your body with good ol’ water.

Most of the time when you are sick you become dehydrated so do yourself a favor

and try to drink a couple extra glasses of water.

Next is rest. Rest helps get your body back on track to recovery by boosting your immune system, thus help fending off germs and sickness.

I know with everyone’s busy schedules it is hard to get plenty of sleep at night.

The best thing to do is try to set a reasonable goal to accomplish then get some rest. If that means taking an hour nap during the day to allow your body to rest, it is better than trying to struggle through homework.

Another tip that you might not think of is to wipe down surfaces in your room or areas that you frequent. Buy some cleaning wipes and wipe down your computer, pencils, table, and anything else you use on a regular basis to try and prevent you or anyone else you know from getting sick.

Finally, a rather easy thing to do is to eat healthy foods to help your body recover and fight germs. This gives your

body the vitamins it needs is essential to help get you back to 100 percent.

If you’re eating a bunch of junk food while you are sick, chances are the germs or bug you have will fester longer since there isn’t anything really trying to fight it.

I know my column sounds like a mother telling her children how to help themselves, but sometimes during this busy time of year we forget to put ourselves and our health first. I just want to make sure everyone has a friendly reminder that you can only do what your body will allow you to do.

If you’re sick you might not be able to do as well as you’d like. Hopefully you find these little tips helpful and can avoid getting sick altogether. Be kind to yourself and get some extra rest and eat to help your body!

Don’t feel pressured to rush through college Katelyn Lambert Lifestyles Editor Why do we tend to tell ourselves it is better to rush through college and get started in our careers and lives? Do we not realize what’s waiting for us when we are done with school?

Here’s a quick breakdown, if you’ve forgotten what being a full-time adult versus fulltime student is like.

When you are a full-time adult, odds are you will start out working 8 hours a day. You’ll probably show up at 8 a.m., get an hour for lunch and head home at 5 p.m.

Some of you might be thinking, “Okay, that doesn’t sound too bad.”

If you’ve ever worked 8-5 for at least a month, where your only days off are Saturday and Sunday, you quickly know that this isn’t the most fun work schedule to have. At the end of the day, you might want to go right to bed. But, you have dishes to wash, clothes to launder and a house to pick up.

No more college also means you have to start paying off student loan payments, living off campus for those who opted for the dorms for their college career and learning how to juggle all of those adult payments we have dreaded for years. As soon as we get that diploma, these responsibilities become our reality.

I don’t really know where this pressure to get done with college fast and start our lives comes from. Part of it probably comes from high school counselors putting us on a fouryear path after getting our high school diplomas. Maybe it also comes from the fact that many of us are ready to move out of our college town and explore opportunities elsewhere, or maybe it’s the idea that the longer we are in college, the harder it will be to get a career started since we will be older.

Guess what? Whether you get your degree in three years or eight, full-time adulting is still waiting for you after commencement. After all, commencement does mean “the start.”

Enjoy your time as a college student, as you only get to be young once. If you need to take

a lighter class load and tack on another semester, that’s okay.

I’m like a lot of college students that look at school as a race. I was prepped to get done in three and a half years, get my degree and get out in the workforce.

Then I worked an 8-5 job for three months, I realized I’m going to pump the breaks a little and extend my college career to not burn myself out in an effort to get done early. I never thought I would be one to take a break from school, but I’m going to be taking a year off to pursue a job I’ve dreamt of for years. I’ll come back and have earned my degree in five years, and I’m happy with that decision.

Some people thrive under pushing themselves to get their degree in record-breaking time, and I applaud them for that. Others have to set a limit for their time in college due to scholarships or other financial restrictions, and I understand that too. But, for myself, I’m happy that I will be taking a little extra time and giving myself a little longer to be a college kid, one that still has a ridiculous schedule of staying up late and waking up early, napping between classes and juggling school with a personal life. Maybe taking a break would respark the motivation for you to get done with college. I’ve seen people make it to their second semester of their final year of schooling, then drop out because they are burnt out. You don’t want that to be the result of years of stu-

dent loans and all-nighters, do you?

What we see as a nuisance now, we will look back upon as a blessing and hopefully not take for granted the time we have in college.

Now, don’t take this as me saying to slack off in college, take as few credits as possible and jack around until you get your degree.

That’s far from my point. Still push yourself and work towards graduation, maintain good grades and get involved in extracurriculars.

But, don’t overwhelm yourself with more hours than you can handle just to say you got done on time or even ahead of schedule.

What matters is that you get done, no matter how long it takes you to get there.

This advice is for the students who are in a rut and feel stuck here in Chadron, the ones who are looking for an out. If you need a break from college, take that break; come back and finish your degree when you feel motivated and ready to tackle your degree.

It’s better to finish when have that motivation and drive to get good grades rather than let your grades slip because you “don’t care anymore” and are just trying to pass classes. You don’t need straight A’s to get a degree.

Don’t be afraid to take a break, because adulting is in the near future. Get your degree in a time frame that is manageable for you, not a time frame that was established when we were still in high school.

Earlier, on Dixie’s second-and-goal attempt from the 3-yard line, Forcella stopped running back Lawrence Starks, freshman of Fontana, California, for a 3-yard loss.

The stop was instrumental in keeping Dixie at bay, but with just under 90 seconds remaining, and the Eagles’ ensuing drive starting from their own 3-yard line, Chadron had yet to secure the win.

Runs on first and second down by Kevin Coy, Jr., senior of Davenport, Florida, failed to net the Eagles’ any additional yards, but worked to take precious seconds off the clock as the team still stood near their own end zone.

Then, with just 29 seconds remaining, Coy took the handoff from three-strides deep in the end zone, disappeared into a mass of humanity as he met the line, broke through to the opposite side, and raced 97 yards to the opposite end zone, leaving Dixie trailing 30-18 with just 16 seconds left on the clock.

The play is the longest scoring play from scrimmage in Eagles’ history.

Big plays were a theme for the Eagles’ offense which got on the board on their opening possession that began with a 36-yard pass from running back Stevann Brown, junior of Casper,Wyoming, to tight end Matt Vargas, of Modesto, California. Coy capped the 75-yard drive with a 1-yard run into the end zone.

Brown came up big again on the Eagles’ second scoring drive, taking the ball 50 yards to the Dixie 30-yard line early in the second quarter. Five plays later Eagles’ quarterback Dalton Holst, sophomore of Gillette, Wyoming, connected with Tevon Wright, junior of Miami, to put the team up 13-0.

After missing two field goals, and exiting the half scoreless, Dixie quickly scored 11 points on the back of a long scoring drive to begin the second half and a field goal on their next drive.

Clinging to a 16-11 lead midway through the third, the Eagles answered the Trailblazers scores when Holst delivered a pass to wide receiver Brandon Fullerton, junior of Riverton, Wyoming. After breaking a second tackle, Fullerton had just one defender to beat, but a sprinting Jackson Dickerson, junior of Chadron, set his sights on the defender and delivered a blistering block to clear his fellow receivers’ route into the end zone.

The win, the Eagles’ first ever against Dixie

State, earned them a 5-2 record, and leapfrogged them past the Trailblazers to third in the RMAC. “This was a big game,” Long said of the win. “It was a big game against a great opponent. Last year, we had just lost to Humboldt (State University) and it was a heart breaker.

Last year at this time my heart was hurting and our team was hurting. This is the exact opposite. Our guys knew what we had to do to beat these guys, and we knew we had to go out and execute. I’m proud of our guys for doing it.”

This Saturday, CSC will play its final home game when it hosts New Mexico Highlands.

Brandon Davenport Sports Editor The Chadron State volleyball team played its final home matches of the season this weekend, but were unable to continue their recent trend of Chicoine Center victories, coming up short in four sets to University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, Friday, and suffering a sweep at the hands of Colorado School of Mines, Saturday.

Despite facing the RMAC leading Orediggers of Colorado Mines, several Eagles put up big numbers in the 25-18, 25-18, 25-23 loss, beginning with strong play from Eagles’ libero Ashton Burditt, junior of Spearfish, South Dakota, who had 18 digs from the back row.

Chadron State’s Brooke Gardner, junior of

Princeville, Illinois, and Chandler Hageman, sophomore of Chadron, led the attack for the Eagles, with Hageman hitting .529 and accounting for 10 kills. Gardner had a team-high 13 kills while hitting .478. Senior Madison Webb contributed 36 assists.

After a pair of 25-18 losses in the first and second sets, the Eagles battled back in the third, running out to an 8-2 lead they’d hold until late in the match when a Mines kill by outside hitter Megan Neil, freshman of Shawnee Mission, Kansas, tied the score at 22. Chadron State’s Aracely Hernandez, freshman of Greeley, Colorado, answered with a kill of her own to put the Eagles in front 23-22, but three straight Mines kills earned them the set and match.

Hernandez, who as a freshman has estab-

lished herself as a key part of the Eagles’ attack, had an off night, with five attack errors while converting just four of 21 attempts.

“I’m proud again of how the girls competed,” Eagles’ Head Coach Riann Mullis said to CSC Sports Information following the loss. “We won some of the things we’d been battling, as far as consistency in energy, and consistency in competitiveness. Mines just played a really clean match. If we had matched this performance (Friday) night, against UCCS, I think things would have gone differently."

Both Brock Thumm, senior of Watervliet, Michigan, and Rulon Taylor, senior of Curtis, were named Pre-season All-RMAC, Tuesday, Oct. 6, and eight other CSC wrestlers joined Thumm and Taylor among those ranked in the Basford rankings new Super Region 6.

The new region, according to CSC’s Sports Information Department, includes eight RMAC schools, in addition to Nebraska-Kearney and Simon Fraser, of British Columbia, Canada. The Basford regional rankings are a proprietary ranking of NCAA Division II and TheOpenMat. com. Eagles falter in fall finale Chessa Parker Reporter The Chadron State College golf team took home 15th place in a field of 16 teams at the Skyhawk Intercollegiate in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

The team had a round one score of 339 on Monday and a round two score of 344 on Tuesday. The two-day total score for the team was a 683. West Texas A&M University in Canyon, Texas took home first with a team score of 590.

"Alpine (Hickstein) played really well and had one of the best scores in school history with nine over par for the two-day tournament," Head Coach John Ritzen said. "As a team we really had a good first day. Everyone played well.

"Day two was harder course conditions and that showed a little with higher scores. But everyone still played well. We are excited to start working on improvements this offseason.

Alpine Hickstein, freshman of Chadron, carded a 77 in round one and a 78 in round two. This made Hickstein's two-day score result in a 155, 11 strokes under her South Dakota Mines’ Hardrocker Invitational score.

She tied for 28th overall out of 90 players.

Sam Rahmig, senior of Gering, shot an 87 in round one. She dropped one stroke in round two, shooting an 86. With a two-day score equaling a 173, she tied for 70th overall. Rahmig improved her score by five strokes from the South Dakota Mines’ Hardrocker Invitational.

Abby White, freshman of Simcoe, Ontario Canada, shot a 90 in round one. Her round two score dropped three points, bringing her score to an 87. This totaled her total score to a 177, tying her for 76th overall.

Anna Branscome, freshman of Lakewood, Colorado, carded an 85 for the first day and a 93 for the second day. With a two-day score equaling 178, she placed 78th overall.

Logan Kasten, sophomore of Cheyenne, Wyoming, shot a 90 for round one and a 97 for round two, equaling 187. Kasten tied for 83rd overall.

Tori Meschke, sophomore of Broken Bow, played as an individual. She carded an 88 for round one and a 98 for round two, making her two-day score a 186.

Meschke placed 82nd overall.

Kayla Elder, freshman of Fort Collins, Colorado, was unable to play due to the concussion she received two weeks ago at the South Dakota Mines’ Hardrocker Invitational.

This was the final tournament for the fall season. The team will travel to Minot, North Dakota for the Minot State University Invite on March 8 and 9.

Following the first set loss, UCCS would go on to win the next three sets 25-18, 25-19, 25-12.

On Saturday against Mines, Chadron State’s seniors were honored prior to their final match in front of their home crowd. The Eagles’ will graduate four players following the season; they are Webb, Dominika Senkerikova, of Uhersky Brod, Czech Republic; Mickey Trimble, of Platte City, Missouri; and Megan Chintala, of Fleming, Colorado.

Chadron State’s now 5-9 RMAC record (7-16 overall) has them ranked 10th of the conference’s 16 teams. The Eagles will play each of their four remaining regular season games on the road, beginning with South Dakota Mines this Friday.

The rival Hardrockers are currently ranked 15th in the conference with a 1-14 RMAC record (4-21 overall).

South Dakota Mines, who have struggled this season, will be looking for their first win since defeating Dickinson State University, North Dakota, 3-2, on Sept. 26. Since that win the Hardrockers have suffered ten consecutive losses.

Saturday, the Eagles' face another rival when they play host to the Black Hills State University Yellow Jackets.

Music professor performs piano recital with guest musicians Donica Enevoldsen Reporter Brooks Hafey, assistant professor of music, performed the chamber music of Claude Debussy in a concert featuring two string musicians from University of Nebraska-Kearney, Ting-Lan Chen, violin, and Noah Turner Rogoff, cello, Friday, at the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center Chicoine Atrium.

From the first minor chord struck on the piano to the powerful ending cadence of the trio, Debussy’s music spilled into the air, engulfing the audience of about 60 students, faculty and community members in the sounds of Debussy.

Hafey has been performing the

works of Debussy since all year as a part of an ongoing project celebrating the life of the composer on the centennial anniversary of his death in 1918. The project includes seven concerts in total.

Claude Debussy is one of the most prominent composers of the impressionist era, a genre of music popular in the late 19th and early 20th century which relies on atmospheric suggestion, fluidity and rich tonal color, and conveying the idea of an image or emotion through its sounds rather than relying on a tonal center.

The concert featured three of Debussy’s works, one for piano and cello, one for piano and violin, and one trio of three instruments.

Hafey and Rogoff started the concert with Sonata for Vioncello and Piano, while the work is conservative in form, the music highlights Debussy’s modernistic originality.

For the second work, Hafey was joined by Ting-Lan Chen to perform Sonata for Violin and Piano, the Sonata unfolds in three movements: Allegro vivo, Intermede: Fantasque et leger, and Dinale: Tres anime. This sonata, composed in 1917, was the last completed composition of Debussy.

Contrasting the sonatas, which were composed only a few years prior to Debussy’s death, the night concluded with a work from the composer’s earlier life as Hafey, Rogoff and Chen joined together

in a trio to perform Debussy’s Piano Trio in G Major, a piece he had composed at age 18 while still a student.

This, Rogoff said, was his favorite piece of the night.

Despite only being able to rehearse a couple of times as a full ensemble before the concert, Hafey and his guest performers played together with wordless communication, the three individuals showing their skill by taking the sounds of three instruments and creating from them a single piece of music.

Hafey’s Debussy project has two more concerts which will take place on Friday, Nov. 2, and Saturday, Nov. 3. Both concerts will be in the Memorial Hall Auditorium.

Card game combines literature and romance Samantha Persinger Reporter It is a truth universally acknowledged that any Jane Austen fan should play this game. The game I am referring to is a card game called "Marrying Mr. Darcy" by Erika Svanoe.

Jane Austen fan or not, anyone can appreciate the ups and downs of a fun card

game to play while having a good cup of tea.

The game starts with every player choosing a heroine from Austen’s "Pride and Prejudice." Like the game title states, you must compete against each other to marry the man of your dreams and get points while doing so.

In the end, if you are not paired off with a suitor from the book, then you are an old maid. But, you can still get points which offer an incentive for even those who are

Domestic violence panel educates students Nicole Lartey Reporter A Domestic Violence Awareness Panel was held at 11 a.m., Tuesday in the Student Center Ballroom and was sponsored by Residence Life Association.

The event introduced six panelists who volunteered to share their experiences and how they dealt with cases of domestic violence.

Panelists included Deena Kennell, director of internships and career services at CSC; Tricia Thayer, social worker with Chadron Community Hospital; Danny Reynaga, attorney with Legal Aid of Nebraska; Jennifer Ponce, client advocate with DOVES; Loni Watson, counselor at Chadron High School; and Tim Lordino, Chadron police chief.

The event discussed domestic violence on campus and what measures RLA can take to support students and act as advocates. It was an opportunity to educate students on domestic vio-

lence and other related issues effecting the youth.

The subject of violence is a major problem on most college campuses.

"Working with families that have been through domestic violence was an opportunity to reach out to victims and build relationships,” Kennell said.

Many colleges offer help under Title IX to students suffering from domestic violence abuse and other cases of sexual misconduct.

The role of social services was also discussed in the panel and they elaborated on providing support to children living under certain conditions.

Reports are made when suspected cases of domestic abuse are noticed. If children living in such circumstances are involved, they are taken away from their parents or guardians.

“It was a great experience learning so much from this topic and educating the public on important matters that can affect the life of an individual,” said RA Princess Uba, 19, senior of Abuja, Nigeria.

The game is fairly easy to play and though it is mostly aimed to please the hearts of Jane Austen fans, those who have not read her novels may also enjoy the game at no cost. If you do not fancy the prestige of the Regency era, you may spice it up and add the zombie expansion for some excitement.

Though I have only played the original and zombie expansion, there is another expansion that you can add which is Austen’s novel "Emma" as well.

The diversity of the heroines' abilities and suitors' requests are complex and add more challenge to the game.

For example, the famous character, Lydia Bennet, may steal any card from any player when a party card is played. Each person can pick a character that fits their own personality, which only makes the game more fun.

Each character has their quirks and

charms but it all comes down to playing character cards to get points.

From tragedy like shame from elopement at the time to humor like admiring closets at your boring cousin’s house, this card game will keep anyone busy, whether you are a die-hard gaming fan or not.

Arguably this game can also pose as a social game. There is not much of a difference in plot or gameplay vary from session to session.

For those who prefer a higher level of difficulty in strategy games, "Marrying Mr. Darcy" may be very easy for you.

However, this game comes with easy to read directions and anyone can appreciate the unique artwork on the box and cards.

Overall this is a fun and light game that anyone can appreciate, so get a good group of friends together, brew a big pot of tea, settle your nerves and marry Mr. Darcy.

NotCho Night raises awareness about sexual assault Sharaya Toof Reporter NotCho Night in the Hub at 5 p.m., Thursday, was not just any average night to sit around and eat nachos.

This event, put on by Residence Life Association, was targeted at all Chadron State students to bring awareness to sexual assault.

Over 40 students showed up to the event, with over half of the group being female.

NotCho Night’s main event was a Kahoot quiz RLA created.

The quiz was made up of 40 questions that consisted of the importance of awareness, signs to look for in victims and facts about sexual assault.

Kris Boardman, assistant director of Kent Hall, drew his inspiration from today's issue of sexual assault. He wants young adults to be more

aware of sexual assault, and all the facts that go along with it.

“This is a huge topic in 2018. I don’t think it’s fair that people are victims of this and I wish this wasn’t a topic we had to discuss," Boardman said. "In this day and age, the people that are doing these things are making it look bad for everyone else, and it’s hard to be a male because people may be scared.”

He hopes NotCho night can help students decrease any fear they may have, and help someone who may have been sexually assaulted.

The 40 questions on the Kahoot Quiz came from a few different sources, such as the Title IX staff on campus. Title IX sent in different tips to report sexual assault properly and how to help a victim. The rest of the questions came from online sources.

This event also had two door prizes that students could win: a fluffy blanket and a Bluetooth speaker.

Planetarium show and outdoor star-viewing end the first night of Friends and Family Weekend Nicole Lartey Reporter The CSC Natural Sciences Club and Chadron Girl Scouts sponsored the Planetarium show at the Math and Science building, Friday, as a part of Friends and Family Weekend.

Kids participated in tours and activities, from making marshmallows to star-viewing. All planets were visible that night, except Saturn, which had disappeared due to too much brightness.

Seven telescopes were available to participants. The first telescope viewed the moon, which was easy to spot, according to the science club members.

“Science is cool, space is fun. Amazing the size of the universe we are looking through,” said Natural Sciences Club member Maria Peterson, 22, senior of McPherson, Kansas.

Two telescopes pointed toward Mars - Katie Parks, Chadron parent and one pointed upward at the Alpha Lyrae, also known as Vega, the brightest star in the constellation.

“It is a good opportunity to spend time with the family and learn something new,” parent Katie Parks said.

“It’s a great way to explore all different aspects from telescopes to constellations of planetary shows and engaging the people with science,” Wendy Jamison, a physical and life sciences professor, said.

RAs educate students on disability awareness Samantha Persinger Reporter Don’t dis my ability, be aware of what I can do.

This was the main message for the RLA event that was held Monday night in the Hub. About 40-50 attending participants learned about different challenging abilities and did simulations that limited their own.

RAs Lydia Privett, 20, junior of Wahoo, co-hosted the event with Sydni Stevens, 21, senior of Ogallala, along with RLA. Many of the simulations were inspired

by Privett’s past experience with those who have disabilities.

“I worked at a summer camp for kids with disabilities. I have a passion to bring awareness for people with disabilities and

to educate others about them,” Privett said.

The simulations included tasks involving non-verbal communication, hearing, speech, vision and learning disabilities.

Participants were also given a piece of sand paper to stimulate painful sensory experiences many people with autism face each day.

“We want people to become aware of the reality for someone with a disability,” Stevens said.

Two events that challenged many were the non-verbal communication and the limited-ability, shoe-tying simulation.

The non-verbal communication used paper pictures and keyboards to get two people to try and communicate with each other by only using the materials.

One of the physical simulations had participants put socks on their hands and had to tie a knot.

Students make ice cream floats Chase Vialpando Reporter Stress sunk and sugar floated when Residence Life Association hosted a Make Your Own Root Beer Float Night in the Hub at 7 p.m., Tuesday.

The event was scheduled to last two hours, but only lasted about an hour before about 120 students cleared out the ice cream and soda.

RLA volunteers dished ice cream as student participants were able to choose a soda and adorn their float with sprinkles, cherries and whipped cream.

There were also various board games set up throughout the room.

The brain behind the event was first-year RA Cheyenne Ryan, 20, sophomore of Glendive, Montana.

She said that she got the idea from her mother and that the proposal had to be turned into the Associate Director of Residence Life, Taylor Osmotherly, a month prior to the actual event.

“It’s the first Make Your Own Float Night we’ve done as far as I know,” Ryan said.

She also discussed her and her fellow RAs’ hard work in organizing the event, including shopping, creating posters, writing online notifications, posting social media notifications and working on other types of networking to gain attention.

Ryan was impressed with the unexpectedly high number of students who came through, explaining the reason they have these events is to make students feel comfortable and at home.
