Senate allocates full $10,000 for The Big Event Devin Fulton Reporter After a lengthy debate, senators voted to appeal AFB’s recommended budget of $4,700 for The Big Event.

Initially, the Big Event staff requested $10,000 for their budget. The financial plan included allocations for advertising, event-day food and t-shirts. AFB’s recommended cuts included a $2,700 cut to the food budget, a $1,000 cut to radio advertisements, and a $500 cut to white-out t-shirts and jackets for staff members.

AFB advised the Big Event staff to seek community sponsors to fill budget gaps, but Dr. Shaunda French-Collins, associate professor of Communication Arts and adviser to The Big Event, said this went against the purpose of the day, which is giving back to the community.

“Our mission is to give back to the community, and asking for them to sponsor us would be counterproductive,” said Dr. French-Collins.

According to Dr. French-Collins, the Big Event is “the largest community event in Western Nebraska.” Additionally, Chadron State’s Big Event ranks as the most successful Big Event for a campus under 10,000 students. Dr. French-Collins stressed the importance of this event not only as a community service project, but also as an event that positively affects enrollment and recruiting.

Senate voted 13-2 in favor of the $10,000, with one abstain vote. With budget cuts in mind, Dr. French-Collins ensured The Big Event staff will be “as mindfully and fiscally conservative as we need to be.”

Dr. Shaunda French-Collins’ Event Planning and Leadership class brings awareness to poverty and food insecurity in our region with the Oxfam Hunger Banquet at 6 p.m., tonight. in the Student Center Ballroom.

In its fourth year, the Oxfam Hunger Banquet is an invite-only event where attendees are assigned a poverty level, such as high class, middle class, low class, or disaster zone, when they enter. The lucky few in the upper class are served a three-course meal, while those in the lower class sit on the floor and eat rice.

The purpose of the dinner is to let guests experience what is a reality for many families in the region.

Chadron Primary School Principal Libby Uhing and CSC student Jeff Mugongo will serve as the two guest speakers.

Guests are encouraged to bring three to five non-perishable items, which will be donated to Chadron’s local food pantry.

The Nebraska Lands Coalition and Nebraska Extension will present “Grazing Research and Cattle Management Through a Holistic Lens,” featuring Jason Rowntree, associate professor of Animal Science at Michigan State University.

The conference will be held in the CSC Student Center from 5-9 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 13. Pre-registration is required by all, including students. Deadline for registration is Nov. 9.

Correction: changes made to Black Box Theatre admissions Brandon Davenport Sports Editor In our Oct. 25 issue, we published an article titled, “Theatre department implements reserved seating in Black Box,” which contained incorrect and potentially misleading information regarding changes made to admission to CSC’s Black Box Theatre.

We regret any confusion this mistake has caused our readers and would like to take this opportunity to bring further clarity to changes made to the theatre’s admission process.

In the original article, found on page four of our Oct. 25 issue, we incorrectly stated that, “prior to the show, tickets will still be available for purchase at the Box Office on a first come, first serve basis.”

In fact, the Box Office will not be associated with shows presented at the Black Box Theatre. The only method of reserving admission will be to use the link on the theatre’s website.

As outlined in our original article, free admission to the theatre has been extended beyond CSC students and employees, to the general public. In

addition, the theatre has implemented a reservation system for admission to productions.

Those wishing to attend a show at the Black Box should use the following procedure to reserve admission: - visit the theatre homepage at https://www.csc. edu/vpa/theatre - left click on the reservation button shown next to listed Black Box Theatre productions -complete the online form and submit.

Following submittal you will receive an email confirmation. If no reservations are available for the show-time you’ve selected, the confirmation will display that you have been placed on a wait list.

Please keep in mind that reserving admission does not guarantee a specific seat within the theatre.

Seating for performances will begin at 7 p.m. for Thursday through Saturday performances and 1:30 p.m. for Sunday matinees. Those with reservations are asked to arrive 10 minutes prior to the start of the performance. Reservations not claimed 10 minutes prior to the production will be released to the wait list.

Social Work to host suicide awareness conference Samantha Persinger Reporter CSC Social Work Class 435, Methods III: Organizations and Communities, is inviting the campus and community of Chadron to their Starting the Conversation Conference, Nov. 7 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Student Center Ballroom.

The conference is focusing on approaching the topic of suicide. It is open to all students and community members. Free lunch will be provided.

The conference will feature speakers that will discuss a mix of topics involving suicide.

The panel of speakers will also be taking questions, and there will be an interactive component for those attending.

The 435 class has been working on putting the conference together since the spring

2018 semester. As every 435 class organizes and hosts a conference in the fall, it is a crucial part of graduating as a social work major.

According to senior Lauren Newman, 21, of Julesburg, Colorado, it is the biggest event in the major.

“It’s an experience not every major gets to do. It was hard to decide on the speakers and the direction of the topic,” Newman said.

The conference is not only about informing students and the community on how to approach the touchy subject of suicide but also dissolving the stigma around discussing it. The main goal is to create awareness and educate those on the topic of suicide and depression.

The keynote speakers range from those who have dealt with depression and suicide to survivors of someone who suffered from the same mental health issues.

CAB to host leadership training Shannon Schneider News Editor CAB Adviser and Student Activities Coordinator Megan Northrup announced CAB’s leadership training will be held Saturday, Nov. 3, from 1-4 p.m., in the Ballroom. The free event is open to all clubs and students who wish to gain leadership skills.

“If you have a group of friends or a group that you have class with that want to come to the leadership training, that would be great,” Northrup said.

If clubs have a head count and want to pre-register for the training, contact Northrup. Free booklets and certificates will be provided.

Bloodcurling Brooks, the haunted house hosted by CAB, brought in 343 students on Saturday.

Vice Chair of Records Kristina McGann reported clubs have spent $22,254.99 this semester.

RLA will be hosting Wheel of Fortune in The Hub Friday from 8-11 p.m. and Dummy Roping from 7:30-10:30 p.m. in the Backyard. If the weather is inclement, the event will move to The Hub. Sigma Tau Delta will be hosting an open mic night Monday, Nov. 5, at 6 p.m. Pizza and drinks will be provided.

Free Bowling Night will be hosted Sunday, Nov. 11, from 6-9 p.m. at Hilltop Lanes.

Leaked transgender memo stirs campus anxiety Shannon Schneider News Editor In both public and online protests, slogans like “We Cannot Be Erased” and “Trans Rights are Human Rights” were written on posters and pages in solidarity.

The protests follow a recent memo leak from the Trump administration that would legally redefine sex and gender under Title IX, a federal civil rights law that bans discrimination in educational institutions receiving government funding. According to an article from the New York Times, the effort will be lead by the Department of Health and Human Services and could potentially alter the lives of 1.4 million Americans who identify as transgender.

Under this memo, the new definition states sex is “a person’s status as male or female based on immutable biological traits identifiable by or before birth”, and that “the sex listed on a person’s birth certificate, as originally issued, shall constitute definitive proof of a person’s sex unless rebutted by reliable genetic evidence.” Gender will be defined in more explicit terms and will be determined “on a biological basis that is clear, grounded in science, objec-

tive and administrable.” If any disputes about sex are filed, an individual must go through genetic testing to clarify their sex.

For people like Sonja Dressel, a licensed student counselor and adviser to United, CSC’s LGBTQ+ group, having a job that falls directly under Title IX puts her in a difficult position if this effort goes through.

“It just leaves such a gray area,” Dressel said in regard to the changes. “Most students, if they came in and they would see Title IX, they’d be thinking ‘consent’, because that’s what we talk about on campus all the time. But rather it’s about gender equity, and that’s one big umbrella with how many things fall under that.”

The Trump administration plans on pulling in the “Big Four,” which is comprised of The Departments of Justice, Education, Health and Human Services and Labor, all of which oversee aspects of Title IX. With each of these agencies involved, the likelihood that the new definition would be legally adopted and enforced in courts is greater.

In the case of a transgender CSC graduate, who remains anonymous, this could spell major problems for those who haven’t fully transitioned yet.

“For someone like me, who has had multi-

ple surgeries and has been on hormones and has all the documents already changed, it won’t affect me as much as someone who is younger or is pre-HRT (hormone replacement therapy).

Are they ever going to be able to transition?

Are they going to be stuck in a body they don’t identify with forever?”

The former student said the involvement of the Big Four would be “encompassing” as, combined, the agencies form a big part of individuals’ lives.

“Education, Labor, Health and Human Services, all those combined together make up every aspect of your life. So, I don’t know. It would be a big thing for our community.”

United, which Dressel calls a “melting pot” of communities that provides a space and support to both students and alumni, explores how these issues will impact the community.

Though talks of the administration’s plans have still been preliminary, Dressel said members often discuss the impact of plans, like Trump’s, on CSC’s students.

“A lot of our discussions are about how those things come down to our campus,” Dressel said.

Similar discussions have also been held online, with members of the trans community

taking on social media sites like Instagram to address their fears relating to this memo. The alum described anxiety in the community and said many are unsure about what their futures will be.

“People I follow [online], they’re panicking.

They say, ‘I’m waiting to hear from my insurance company about surgery. How does this affect that?’ and ‘Am I ever going to be able to transition because of this?’ And then I’ve got a lot of trans friends who are younger, and they can’t be on hormones because they’re too young, and they say ‘Am I ever going to get that chance, or am I not?’, because the education system is going to change, and wonder ‘Am I going to be stuck going into the wrong bathroom forever?”

The administration plans on meeting with the Justice Department by the end of the year to formally propose the changes, leaving a large gap of time before big developments could happen. The lack of certainty at the moment leaves a lot to be considered, and for Dressel this isn’t something positive.

“People can choose to see it as ‘the glass is half full, the glass is half empty’, and say ‘Oh, it won’t really affect us, and I’ll be okay,’ but it’s hard to do that right now.”

Prepare yourself for the midterm election Anna Staver, a political journalist for the Denver Post, described the Post’s research into the past of those running in Colorado’s elections during a Humanities Nebraska open forum about two weeks ago. In hopes of giving voters “a full picture of their options for representation Nov. 6,” the post conducted background checks and found various DUI, drug and assault charges in some of the candidate’s pasts.

So how well do you know your candidates?

Whether Republican or Democrat, we need to know who and what we are voting for. In a time of political divide, it will not do to simply mark the box that corresponds with your political party during these midterm elections.

It can be intimidating to know who we are voting for and what causes matter most to us. Campaigns, like “No Excuses,” “Rock the Vote” and “Head Count,” have made it easier

than ever to figure out who will be on your ballot and what their stances on issues are.

The resources are there. Do your research. Know that while candidates will tell you what you want to hear.

During the Nebraska Press Association Hall of Fame Induction Oct. 19, Governor Pete Ricketts described the importance of the press. He noted that our key roles as journalists were to hold government accountable.

We agree wholeheartedly with that statement. However, it is odd to hear that statement coming from a man who supports our current president, someone who is very vocal about his distrust of the media.

It is easy to listen to each politician tell us what we want to hear, but what issues matter to us? Do you want to elect an official who supports the second amendment? Do you want to elect an official that sided with Brett Kavanaugh?

That was our founding father’s long-winded way of saying the government is put in place to serve us.

If you do not like our government and the decisions they have made, change it.

Turn your complaints into compliments

This may come as a shock to some, but no one is perfect.

Everyone has flaws, and some are more bothersome than others. Some flaws are able to be fixed, while others are just part of who we are. One thing I think everyone could work on (including myself ) is complaining. I don’t think there is anything more draining than being around people who complain all the time or always have something negative to say about something.

There is no real benefit of complaining except, getting something from in your brain, out your mouth, and into the ears of those around you.

Whether you are talking trash about someone else or complaining about that

one teacher you always whine about, everyone complains at some point.

This week I would like to challenge everyone to create a positive environment around them and try to complain less. I know this sounds pretty stupid, but think about how often you complain in a day.

Now cut that in half, and with one half turn those into compliments or positive aspects of your day.

One of the best ways to start doing this is thought-stopping. This last week I tried my best to implement this within my own life. I decided that every time I was about to say something negative (even if it was in a text) I would stop my thought and change it to something positive. For example, I stopped myself from self deprecating and said that I was able to complete a huge project I’ve been working on for weeks.

Now that may seem stupid, but the fact that I was able to turn a negative topic into a positive one was a huge step in the right direction.

We all see so many people throughout the day, but even if we exchange one of our negative comments within every

interaction with a positive one, image what could happen once you are able to do this more frequently.

I am not encouraging you to bottle everything up. But there is a huge difference between complaining just because you can and asking friends for advice with trials you are facing.

I challenge you to try and be a positive ray in the lives of the people around you. You might be surprised with how contagious it is, especially with how stressed everyone is and all the random things people have to go through in life.

Try your best to not complain around others.

Of course a few complaints here and there are bound to happen, but try to be more thoughtful with your words. Hopefully this helps bring a positive light into your life and the life of those around you!

Non-traditional perspective: what I know that you don’t Brandon Davenport Sports Editor I’m a non-traditional college student. In fact, I’ve never been a traditional college student. I began my college career when I was 26-years old at Western Nebraska Community College, in Scottsbluff; now, at 34, I’m continuing it at CSC. What this means is if you’re a traditional college student in, or nearing, your early twenties, I have some perspective you likely don’t yet enjoy - perspective that gives me an advantage when it comes to the college experience.

Although giving advice to younger generations is like trying to solve a math equation by banging your head against the wall, I’m going to do it anyway.

You may not be able to understand this yet, but the choices and actions you make today are going to have an impact on your life ten, fifteen, forty years down the road. You’ve already made one great decision in attending college; don’t sabotage that decision with other poor decisions.

Your generation gets hammered by others due to a perceived lack of an ability to work hard. I’ve defended those younger than I (I am, after all, technically a millennial) in the past, but honestly, it becomes more and more difficult to do so each day I spend at CSC. Maybe it’s your generation or it’s just what happens with people your age, but too often I see CSC students running away from difficulty, or treating a difficult task with an attitude of just doing enough to get by.

The reality of difficult tasks, the ones that cause discomfort, is

that those tasks are most likely attempting to give you the knowledge you need the most - the knowledge that is going to lift you above your peers when it’s time for you to move into your career.

The issue is that you’re young and you’re fleeing from discomfort because you want to be comfortable and enjoy your youth.

But I can tell you with no doubt in my mind that you will never be as well-equipped to endure discomfort as you are right now.

Your life in your early twenties is as flexible as it will ever be, and likely as uncomplicated as well.

But you’re young and you want to enjoy life to its fullest while you have your youth. I understand the root of that thought. I was in my early 20s once too.

Let me share with you something not a lot of people will tell you when you’re as young as you are right now – your late 20s and early 30s are going to be more enjoyable than your early 20s could ever be. You’ll have more perspective, better relationships and you’ll appreciate far more about life than you do right now.

You’ll also enjoy much more clarity regarding what’s important and what’s not.

Back to your schoolwork; here’s my advice: work your butt off while here at CSC. Behave and act in a manner that is consistently positive toward the development of your successful future. Act in a way that would make your 30-year old self proud.

Doing so is part of a very important behavior in life. If I don’t have your full attention yet, give it to me now and take to heart this statement – steadfastly, and consistently, invest in yourself during these years of your youth.

If you want to have fun and take advantage of your new-found social surroundings, earn it by working hard, then playing hard.

If you’re going to play hard, however, do so in a positive manner.

What I mean is, things like DUI’s, getting into trouble with alcohol and drugs and making questionable relationship decisions are forms of having fun that don’t have a positive effect toward your future. Have your fun in a manner that addresses your need to relax and unwind once in a while, not in a manner which jeopardizes all the work you’re doing at CSC. Leave things like producing questionable work just to meet due dates, wasting time on relationships with no future and doing dumb things to get praise from your social group where those things belong – in high school. If your college friends can’t understand you doing so, they’re not good friends. You’ll build better and more meaningful relationships with people that share your goals if you steadfastly invest in your future.

Putting in meaningful work now and making mistakes in noble pursuit of investing in yourself will pay off for you later in life.

In a recent conversation with a close friend, in which we were reminiscing, my friend commented on how much fun he used to believe he was missing out on because instead of being out drinking with me, he was applying himself at college in pursuit of his nursing degree.

Now in his 30s, he has a great career, a beautiful wife, two beautiful young children, a beautiful house, and two BMWs in his garage that aren’t too shabby either. He now knows his younger self wasn’t missing out on anything. His younger self was building a future where he could enjoy more of life than his younger self could even imagine.

Eagle wrestlers unveil championship culture Chase Vialpando and Brandon Davenport Reporter and Sports Editor Eagles Head Wrestling Coach Brett Hunter expects “championship culture” this upcoming wrestling season, in the wake of a difficult 2017 season for the program.

“Among our goals are getting guys to a national tournament and getting multiple guys to All-American,” Hunter said.

According to Hunter, some of his wrestlers to watch this season are Brock Thumm, senior of Watervliet, Michigan; Wade French, junior of Heriman, Utah; and Rulon Taylor, senior of Curtis.

Thumm, at the 141-pound weight class, is currently ranked third in the National Wrestling Coaches Association NCAA Division II Super Region 6 rankings.

Now in his fifth year with the program, (he redshirted his freshman season), Thumm overcame a serious medical condition last season to become the regional runner-up and went 1-2 at the NCAA Division II National Wrestling Championships, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, back in March.

Earlier this month, Thumm was named RMAC Pre-season All-Conference.

French, a transfer from Western Wyoming College, is ranked ninth in the nation in the 197-pound weight class, and will look to have a strong first season with the Eagles. According to CSC Sports Information, French is the reigning National Junior College Athletic Association champion in his weight class.

Taylor, Chadron State’s heavyweight, returns to the Eagles ranked 12th in the nation following a 20-13 season that saw him finish fifth at the RMAC Championships. Like teammate Thumm, Taylor was recently named RMAC Pre-season All-Conference.

The Eagles grapplers will roll into the new season with an open this Saturday at the University of Wyoming, where they will compete against about 30 teams and 500 wrestlers. According to Hunter the meet will be a good opportunity to evaluate his team’s performance.

As a team, the NWCA has Chadron State tied at 21st in their preseason rankings.

the season by focusing heavily on this year’s recruitment, explaining that the focus of his recruitment is to bring in wrestlers that can meet the team’s expectations of doing the right thing on and off the mat, and demonstrate his desired culture.

Hunter has added seven transfers and nine freshman to his current squad.

Now entering his seventh season as head coach, Hunter said he has four new wrestlers who may be signing for the Eagles soon, three of which are from Nebraska, and one from Indiana. Hunter won’t reveal too much about the prospects other than they seem to be the “right type of kids” for the program, and have five state titles between them.

Eagles battle with Cowboys Devin Fulton Reporter The Eagles came back from a fourth quarter deficit for the third time this season, pulling of an exciting 43-38 victory over the New Mexico Highlands Cowboys, at Elliot Field, Saturday.

The win improves the Eagles to 6-2 this season and earns the team its first undefeated home record since 2006.

Up 37-31 with NMHU threatening to score the go-ahead touchdown midway through the fourth quarter, Demetrius McFadden, Junior of Pahokee, Florida, forced a fumble from Cowboys’ receiver D.J. McFadden, senior of Philadelphia, which Chadron safety Malik Goss, freshman of Upland, California, recovered for a 62-yard touchdown.

Though Chadron’s attempt at a two-point

conversion failed, the defensive score improved the Eagles lead to 43-31, giving the team a crucial two-score lead.

“It felt good to score my second (defensive) touchdown, but there is no way I could have done it without my teammates,” Goss said regarding the fumble return. “They forced the fumble and set me up to be successful by leading me down the field untouched by anyone.”

Despite the turnover, the Cowboys continued to pressure late in the game, cutting their deficit to 43-38 when Highlands quarterback Danny Cameron, senior of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, rifled a 9-yard pass to Dillon Gassoway, freshman of Albuquerque.

Following the touchdown, Highlands forced an Eagles’ three-and-out on the next drive, but began their final possession at their own 1-yard line after Chadron special-teams weapon Zach Kozlik artfully placed a 43-yard non-returnable

punt as deep into New Mexico territory as was possible.

Chadron was able to stall New Mexico at its own 15-yard line and get the ball back with 2:52 remaining.

A pair of third-down conversions, the first a 9-yard run by Chadron’s Kevin Coy Jr., the second a 10-yard pass from Dalton Holst to Cole Thurness, allowed the Eagles to then run out the game clock and seal the victory.

Leading 14-0 after the first quarter, Chadron allowed the Cowboys 21 unanswered points during the second quarter. Following a 26-yard field goal to end the first-half, the Eagles trailed Highlands 21-17.

Despite ceding momentum to Highlands, it took Chadron just 12 seconds to regain the lead when, on the first play from scrimmage, Holst launched a 42-yard pass to receiver Cole Thurness, sophomore of Rapid City, South Dakota, to

From there the lead would change in New Mexico’s favor following a Cowboys field goal and touchdown pass, but Chadron’s 16-yard rushing touchdown to begin the fourth quarter gave the Eagles the lead for good thanks to Goss and Chadron’s late-game heroics.

The Eagles’ attack was balanced with Holst completing 17 of 29 passes for 239 yards and three touchdowns.

Chadron receiver Wright caught five passes for 97 yards; teammate Cole Thurness caught six for 94 yards. Each had a single touchdown and contributed big receptions during the game.

On the ground, CSC rushed for 255 yards as Elijah Myles, freshman of Hawthorne, California, ran for a season-high 99 yards with one touchdown to complement Coy’s 148-yard, one-touchdown game.

According to CSC’s Sports Information Department, Coy’s performance put the senior running back over the 2,000 career rushing yards mark, with 2,120. Coy is now 121 yards from Hall-of Fame runner Mike Fackrell who sits at 10th alltime among CSC athletes.

Throughout the high-scoring affair the Eagles’ defense caused three turnovers with fumble recoveries by Goss and Merritt Crabtree, senior of Newcastle, WY, and an interception by linebacker Tyler Lewis, junior of Arvada, Colorado.

Chadron was led in tackles by redshirt freshman Brendan Brehmer, of Alliance, and senior Keenan

Johnson, of Chadron, who each had 11. Eagles’ defense mainstay Tyler Lewis, junior of Arvada, Colorado had eight.

Chadron was once again outgained by their opponent in a winning-effort as the Cowboys combined for 553 yards to the Eagles’ 517.

Highlands quarterback Cameron completed 26 of 39 passes for 391 yards and threw five touchdowns. The senior quarterback’s most-found target was teammate McFaddon who caught 10 passes for 139 yards and two touchdowns. Cowboys receiver Zach Drew-Toles, senior of Las Vegas, Nevada, also broke 100 yards receiving on 5 catches for 113 yards.

Dione Alston, senior of Salem, New Jersey, led all Highlands runners with 137 yards on 22 carries.

The Eagles’ T.D. Stein, senior of Chadron, took just 10 snaps as the team’s starting quarterback Saturday before leaving the game with an apparent knee injury. Stein is not expected to play in Chadron’s upcoming game with South Dakota Mines.

Against Highlands, the Eagles were without both DeAndre Barthwell, junior of Westland, Michigan, and Jackson Dickerson, junior of Chadron, due to injury. Dickerson is expected to play Saturday.

This Saturday, CSC travels to Rapid City, South Dakota, to face the Hardrockers who currently have a 4-5 record.

South Dakota Mines have been losers of consecutive high-scoring games with Highlands and Colorado School of Mines.

Inductees to the Eagles' Athletics Hall of Fame, along with their families, were honored during halftime of Saturday's football game, at Elliott Field.

Eight names were added to the Eagles' Athletics Hall of Fame, Saturday, and inductees were honored at halftime of Chadron State's football game with New Mexico Highlands, before a dinner ceremony that evening.

This year's inductees were former CSC basketball players Janelle Hutt Uehling, of North Platte; Zak Kennedy, of Chicago; CSC bull riders Will Farrell, of Thermopolis, Wyoming, and Dustin Elliott, of North Platte; and football players Ryan Deterding, of Indianapolis, Jeremy Eardley, of Mountain View, Wyoming, Matt Strand, of Surprise, Arizona, and Jeff Turman, of Chadron.

Inductees and their families were guests of honor at a dinner Saturday evening at the Student Center ballroom. Each inductee received a video introduction before giving their induction speech.

"It's truly an honor to be inducted to a college hall of fame with a lot of great athletes," Elliott said following the ceremony. "In my speech I mentioned that era that we were here, it was such a great time in sports and athletics here at Chadron State. To be a part of it is pretty special."

This year's inductees bring the total of Hall of Fame entrants to 316.

This weekend the Eagles volleyball team split a pair of South Dakota matches, winning 3-1 against South Dakota Mines, Friday, and falling 3-1 against Black Hills State University, Saturday.

The matches bring the Eagles to an 8-17 record with just two matches remaining.

Against Black Hills, Saturday, the Eagles fell victim to the Yellow Jackets in four sets 25-22, 13-25, 21-25, 18-25.

Chadron managed a win in the first set despite giving away an early 5-3 lead and trailing through mid-set. The Eagles managed to tie the set at 16-16, but couldn’t gain the lead until going ahead 20-19 late.

Despite tying again at 20-20, Chadron would begin to pull toward the set win after kills from Brooke Gardner, junior of Princeville, Illinois, and Shelby Schouten, junior of Alton, Iowa, put the team up 24-21. Another kill from Schouten, set up by Madison Webb, senior of Loveland, Colorado, put the set away.

Unfortunately for the Eagles, it would be their only set win of the match.

Gardner hit .265 during the match and recorded a season high 22 kills to lead Chadron State. Teammate Schouten hit a team high .333, recording 15 kills on 39

attempts. Despite their two leading performances, the Eagles as a group hit just .098 Webb had a double-double in the match with 45 assists and 13 digs. Teammate Ashton Burditt, junior of Spearfish, South Dakota, recorded a team leading 27 digs, while Karli Noble, sophomore of Cheyenne, Wyoming, had 16. CSC’s Mickey Trimble, senior of Platte City, Missouri, and Aracely Hernandez, freshman of Greeley, Colorado, each had 11.

The Eagles were without their current blocking leader, Chandler Hageman, freshman of Chadron, due to injury.

In contrast to Saturday’s match with the Yellow Jackets, Chadron lost their first set 20-25 against South Dakota Mines, Friday, before coming back to win each of the next three sets, 25-16, 25-22, 25-18.

A pair of Eagles had career highs in the match, Burditt with 36 digs to lead the team, and Webb with 47 assists. The senior setter also hit a team-leading .375 while recording seven kills.

Gardner once again led the Eagles offensively with 18 kills, and Schouten contributed 16 while hitting .317.

Hernandez hit just .135 with ten kills, but achieved a double-double in the match with 23 digs.

The Eagles end their season this week in matches at Metropolitan State University at Denver. Both the match on Thursday and the match on Friday are set to begin at 7 p.m.

Residence Life Association teamed up with the CSC Plainswalkers Society and CAB to host Bloodcurling Brooks, Saturday night. The event lasted until midnight, with 343 people attending and over 20 volunteers operating the event.

Groups of up to five people ventured through the haunted dorm, first walking down to the dorm's elevator on the first floor while passing different characters trying to scare the attendees.

At the end of the hallway, the group members then had to travel from the first to the third floor

in an elevator with a clown. Upon reaching the third floor, groups made their way through the rest of the hallway and down the stairs to the zombie hunt.

During the zombie hunt, a Plainswalkers Society member provided a Nerf gun and ammunition. After proceeding down the hallway, groups descended the stairs to the final part of Bloodcurling Brooks: snacks and refreshments.

In the basement, cupcakes were provided for participants to decorate. There was also an arrangement of different sodas and snacks to choose from.

Taylor Osmotherly, Residence Life's associate director, said that planning this event was a pro-

cess. In order to make this event happen, multiple people from maintenance, the administration and lawyers had to give their approval.

“We started planning mid-September and continued to work on it up until the day of the event,” Osmotherly said.

Osmotherly also gave credit to Anthony Zimny, Samantha Merrill and McKenna Jones, along with a handful of other volunteers for making their “creative ideas into realities” and helping make this event successful.

“Because of the great turnout and positive feedback from students, we may possibly put on an event like this again in years to come," Osmotherly said.

Mckay Tebbs, assistant professor of music, performed a selection of solo guitar works and featured fellow CSC music faculty during his faculty recital, Friday, at the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center Chicoine Atrium.

Foot-tapping tunes filled the space in the atrium as an audience of about 50 listened to Tebbs’ performance. The first half of the recital consisted of five solo guitar works, three of which Tebbs had arranged himself. The second half featured Tebbs and his colleagues performing together in five more pieces.

From Jimi Hendrix to Dolores O’Riordan, the night included a variety of work as well as an original piece by Tebbs called “Shades of Red,” which he wrote in 2013.

The five faculty members who joined Tebbs on stage were Joel Schreuder, professor of music, Michael Stephens, professor of music, Rick Puzzo, assistant professor of music, and Brooks Hafey, assistant professor of music. The ensemble also included one non-faculty member, CSC alumni Kassy Schrader, of Chadron.

Schreuder joined Tebbs on stage to sing “Round Midnight” by Thelonius Monk, a jazz standard with guitar accompaniment, and “How High the Moon/ Ornithology” by Morgan Lewis.

Tebbs said his favorite piece of the night was either “Tune 88” or “Midnight Blue”, both featured Stephens on saxophone. Tebbs called “Tune 88” a lot of fun to play and said it had a great feeling to it.

The next faculty recitals will take place this weekend as part of the Claude Debussy project, featuring Hafey performing the solo piano works of Debussy, Friday at 7 p.m. and Bobby Pace and guest artist Nicole Lemoine Johnson performing Debussy’s duo piano works, Saturday, at 7 p.m., both in the Memorial Hall Auditorium.

Painting in the Library Students decorate canvases to add art to empty basement library walls Donica Enevoldsen Reporter The Reta E. King Library and Residence Life Association partnered to host Painting in the Library, last Thursday.

The event channeled student creativity to bring student artwork to the basement walls of the library.

About 35 students came to participate in the event and complete artwork for the library.

Sadie Sheppard, 19, Junior of Fargo,

North Dakota, and the RA in charge of the event, said the goal was to beautify the library’s dreary basement walls.

About 13 students pre-registered for the event, but the coordinators planned for 20 to 40 participants.

A variety of artwork was created as students from various departments and majors gathered together in room 110 to paint.

Some students drew their inspiration from artwork on Pinterest, and others created totally original pieces.

The event lasted from 2-5 p.m. Sandwiches and drinks were served by Dining

Services.

The library provided 22 canvases in three different sizes for students to choose from, and as more students showed up wishing to paint, RLA supplied additional smaller canvases.

Makayla Brown, 19, sophomore of Hershey, said she enjoyed having the opportunity to paint because she used to paint in high school and doesn’t get many chances to do it without signing up for an art class.

The idea for the event was the result of a brainstorm between Christine Fullerton, Public Services Librarian, and Kristol Cum-

mings, Project Coordinator for Teaching and Learning Technologies.

Fullerton said the event served a two-fold purpose, providing artwork for the basement walls and getting students into the library.

Fullerton said they had expected a variety of work ranging in skill but were very impressed with creativity and talent of all the students’ paintings.

The artwork is on display on the library’s basement, and the library staff encourages all students, faculty and staff to visit the library and view it.

Two amateur sleuths solved the mystery and walked away with the grand prize of a “Clue” board game for each team member during Tuesday night’s Live Clue Night in The Hub, sponsored by CSC Plainswalkers Society and Residence Life Association.

Samantha Merrill, senior of Oral, South Dakota, and Gabriel Guzman, freshman of Gillette, Wyoming, were the grand prize winners of Live Clue Night.

About 30 prospective detectives gathered in The Hub to solve the mystery of who murdered the “owner of the house,” according to script-writer Laven Adair, 25, alumnus of Hot Springs, South Dakota.

This semester's Live Clue Night had a Halloween theme, with those trying to solve the mystery encouraged to dress up in costume.

This Live Clue Night has been in the works since last semester’s inaugural event, according to Plainswalkers President Makenzy Petty, 21, senior of Chadron.

“We knew we were going to do a different theme,” she said.

Live Clue Night was sponsored with RLA, and the budget for the evening was $245.23.

The grand prize for the evening was board games, and some of the other prizes included laundry baskets, movies and cartoon plushies.

At 7 p.m., the amateur sleuths met in The Hub to eat the provided snacks and mingle with one another. Subway catered the event, and there was an assortment of other snacks and drinks.

Then, just after 7:30 p.m., narrator Mr. Abyss, played by Adair, gave the detectives a run-down of all six of the characters for the evening and how the game worked.

Each team of sleuths had to listen to each suspect give their clues and alibis, solely by listening to the exchange between the two characters in each of the three rooms that were potential murder locations: Kent basement, Andrews basement and The Landing.

The actors had to stay in character for the duration of the night and could not stray from their script.

The first team to determine the room the crime was committed in, the weapon used to commit the crime and the suspect who committed murder would win the grand prize.

Petty said that planning had a few hiccups, specifically when it came to RLA recently changing forms for event proposals, ultimately resulting in having to resubmit forms.

But, these hiccups didn’t stop the event from happening, and Petty said she “could not have done this by myself.”

Angel White, played by Mickenzi Loyd, senior of Big Piney, Wyoming, and Rep. Mauve, played by Timothy McClure, of Chadron, give Live Clue Night detectives clues to determine who committed the crime, where it was committed and what was used to commit the crime during Tuesday night’s event in Kent Basement.

He suggests allowing the body to adjust and adapt to a fat based metabolism for four to six weeks.

“If you don’t do anything else, I would just decrease the amount of sugar intake, decrease or limit vegetable oils, and decrease processed foods,” Ellis said.
