ate took to carry out the veto. CAB has proposed the possibility of clubs co-sponsoring or donating money to The Big Event as well as other funding possibilities. Clubs will make their final decisions regarding individual allocations at 5 p.m. and Senate will follow with the vote at 5:30 p.m.

Senate votes to investigate Big Event budget veto Shannon Schneider News Editor Senators voted unanimously to send last week’s minutes to Constitutional Court in lieu of cloudy by-laws and questions involving The Big Event budget’s veto.

In Senate’s previous meeting, President Lukas Klueber, junior of Rapid City, South Dakota, could not veto The Big Event budget due to being on The Big Event staff. President Klueber then resigned, leaving Vice President Konery Klueber, junior of Rapid City, with the power to veto. President Klueber was then voted back in after the motion had passed, but questions about the validity of this move according to Senate by-laws led to a vote to further review the action.

According to Chapter 1: Court Structure of the Student Senate Constitutional Court document, Constitutional Court consists of “the proper number of associate justices and a Chief Justice.” The Court’s jurisdiction is determined by the CSC Student Association Constitution and is involved in interpreting the Student Association Constitution, deciding the constitutionality of governing bodies’ actions and disciplinary actions and corrective orders.

Chief Justice Sam Merrill, senior of Oral, South Dakota, said the Constitutional Court will offer a formal opinion and present the final decision over Senate’s veto.

“By doing this, we will have a binding opinion of the Court to see whether we did right or whether we did wrong, and to make sure everything was followed,” Merrill said.

By-laws involving the veto are currently being revised, as according to Merrill there’s a “gray area” regarding last week’s action. Elizabeth Rotherham, junior of Balfour, North Dakota, was appointed as the chair of the by-law revision committee, which is the committee that will be tasked with the veto by-law changes.

Vice President of Finance Lily Umeta, sophomore of Ethiopia, reported that AFB had a “very effective” meeting with The Big Event staff last Thursday regarding their budgets.

After the meeting, AFB revised their recommended budget to $5,000, which would include allocations for budget items such as t-shirts and Subway sandwiches. Umeta encouraged those with questions about AFB’s budget process to come forward and share what they have learned with others as well.

“I know a lot of people have been asking a lot of different questions, and I am only one person,” Umeta said. “You guys

are a lot, so if you guys could explain it to different people, I can explain it to [you all] and inform everyone about AFB.” Senate will vote at 5:30 p.m., Monday, Nov. 19, on The Big Event budget. During this time, CAB clubs will have the opportunity to explore the possibility of co-sponsoring The Big Event with money donated from their funds. Graduate student Cody Cooper suggested that Senate could allocate the full Big Event budget and clubs could instead donate money to Spring Days next semester.

All CSC students and faculty are invited to attend Senate meetings to voice their questions and concerns. Meetings are held at 5:30 p.m. every Monday.

Students are encouraged to register for classes if they have not done so. According to President Klueber, there is an “outstanding amount” of freshmen and sophomores who have not yet registered. Registration help can be found through faculty advisers, professors and the START office.

The NPAC Committee is working on a 5-year plan regarding maintenance and replacements in the NPAC building.

The Native American Club will be hosting a powwow in the student center ballroom starting at 8 a.m., Saturday. All students and faculty are welcome.

CAB encourages clubs to co-sponsor The Big Event Devin Fulton Reporter With the Big Event’s budget reduced to $5,000, Vice Chair of Finance Isaac Langan, senior of McCook, proposed that clubs help co-sponsor the event.

Langan explained each club may choose how much they wish to give regardless of the amount.

If numerous clubs donate, Langan said The Big Event can have a “full day” and make an impact on the community.

“You guys will share that [money] with The Big Event [and] slap your club’s name on with it ,” Langan said. “With each of your individual bud-

charge of keeping each club’s budgets, this will be a rare opportunity for clubs to sit down with CAB to go over their budgets.

“We are not going to offer to let you see your budget very often, so I would take advantage of this opportunity right now,” Vice Chair of Records Kristina McGann, senior of Broken Bow, said.

Members of CAB stressed students to register for classes. Approximately 500 freshmen and sophomores need to register for spring courses.

CAB saw 73 students attend Free Bowling Night at Hilltop Lanes on Sunday.

CAB is hosting Free Movie Night at the Eagle Theater starting at 6:45 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 25.

Sigma Tau Delta is hosting a donation-based fundraiser in the Student Center from 5-7 p.m., Friday, Nov. 30 and 10-1 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 1.

The club will be gift wrapping, reading stories to children and serving hot chocolate and cookies in the Student Center. The event is open to students, faculty and community members.

The Pit is hosting a dodgeball tournament in the NPAC, 9 p.m. – midnight, Thursday. Teams must have six people.

Clubs interested in donating money toward The Big Event must inform CAB by 5 p.m., Monday, Nov. 19. Deena Kennel, CAB faculty adviser, hopes the budget predicament will result in increased student participation in the future.

“This entire situation has created an incredible amount of awareness among the student body which hopefully leads to an incredible amount of participation,” Kennell said.

BRIEFS Jones to present in Graves Lecture Series

HPER Club hosts Frozen Turkey Trot

The Chadron State College HPER Club presents “The Annual Frozen Turkey Trot 5K run/walk” at 9 a.m. on Nov. 17 at the NPAC. The entry fee is $25 per person. Fall 2018 Senior Art show premiers

The ART 412 Senior Thesis class will be hosting “A Look Into the Sublime,” the fall 2018 Senior Thesis Art Show, from Nov. 19 to Dec. 7. Gallery hours will be 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

This show features five graduating seniors from Nebraska hometowns: Abgail Cary and Kayla DeSersa of Gothenburg, Courtney Casillas of Grant, Nicole Schekall of Hemingford, and Tristan Stephenson of Alliance. Pieces displayed will consist of varying mediums including ceramics, paintings, photography, printmaking and sculptures.

An open reception will be held from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. in Memorial Hall.

Confrontation between fan, CSC Live crew Brandon Davenport Sports Editor Near the end of Saturday’s CSC Men’s Basketball game, a spectator left the Chicoine Center stands to confront the CSC Live commentating crew. The altercation, which CSC Live video shows occurring with about two minutes remaining in the second half, then carried past the final buzzer.

The CSC Live video shows the man, believed to a be a family member of a CSC basketball player, crossing the court between the playing surface and the east wall of the Chicoine Center in order to confront Myles Busby, color-commentator for the two-man CSC Live crew working the game from the scorer’s table. According to bystanders, the man verbally accosted Busby in response to Busby’s criticism of a Chadron player.

As the confrontation continued after the game, bystanders (including an Eagle reporter) say additional members of the spectator’s party joined in confronting Busby, and commentator Devin Fulton, courtside.

As the altercation moved from the play-by-play area to the east end of the court, Busby, who had been engaging verbally with his confronters, shoved one fan who had repeatedly assumed a confrontational stance very near Busby, according to bystanders.

The incident carried on for a handful of minutes with Busby eventually leaving the area. As the situation began to de-escalate, members of the disgruntled fan’s party continued to voice their displeasure to CSC Live’s Fulton. Chadron police and CSC security were later seen responding to the incident.

In response to the incident CSC Director of Athletics Joel Smith offered the following statement via email: “The situation in question was unique and its response by college employees will continue to be reviewed. Existing practices may be modified to ensure the continued safety of spectators, student athletes and employees. Chadron State College, as well as the RMAC and NCAA Division II, is committed to sportsmanship and that will never change. The athletic department received apologies from the individuals

involved and considers this situation resolved.

The RMAC sportsmanship statement is read prior to every athletic event and we expect the crowd to abide by it.”

In response to a request for documents pertaining to CSC policies governing spectator behavior at CSC sporting events, both in general and as they pertain to Chicoine Center events, CSC Director of College Relations Alex Helmbrecht referenced only the RMAC sportsmanship code read before each athletic event.

The code reads as followed: “The Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference is committed to sportsmanship. We take pride in the conduct of our student-athletes and coaches, and ask that everyone - coaches, athletes and spectators treat opponents and officials with respect. We encourage you to cheer for your favorite team during today’s competition. At the same time, please demonstrate the respect you would like to be shown as visitors on their campus. Unruly, threatening or obscene behavior will not be condoned at today’s game. Thank you for your cooperation and support.”

Rachel Mitchell Columnist It is about to be the busiest time of the year. Children are compiling their Christmas lists, families are putting up holiday decorations and everything in between.

Thanksgiving and Black Friday are just around the corner, which means having to deal with family, friends and strangers.

Some people flourish and thrive during this time. They are adamant about going to family gatherings and events while others would rather be in their pajamas on their couch watching movies. But, unfortunately, that can’t always be our luck.

Although we might not be able to stay in every night during the holidays, it is important to make sure that we as people need to remember a few simple values as we go through stressful time.

During the holidays it’s easy to get stressed and frustrated with the people around you. I know that sometimes just going to the store can take a toll because everyone is in a terrible mood and just wants to get in and out in a reasonable time.

But, everyone is just as stressed as you. Everyone has their own checklist they have to accomplish in the same 24 hours that you have.

Be mindful this holiday season. Try a little extra to be kind to the cashier at the store because you can guarantee there was a few rude customers that have come through their line.

Be nice to your friends and try not to complain about the family you have to visit.

Be patient with the older man in front of you standing in

This might be his first holiday without his wife. Revise the rude-toned email you are about to send to someone because they haven’t been on top of everything as they normally are.

They might be preoccupied thinking about all the other things they have to get done on top of family issues.

I believe it is important for everyone to take this time to be a little more mindful. You’ve heard it before but I’m going to say it again: you never know what someone is going through.

Holidays for some people are not as bright and fun as for others. It is so important to be kind to the people around you.

You have the power to make or break someone’s day.

Instead of challenging you like I normally do, I want to ask you this: is what you are doing more important than what others around you are doing? Does being rude to the cashier for being slow do you any good? Is being impatient with the people around you helping them or you in any way? This holiday season please be mindful of how you treat others.

Keep this in mind as you go into the next few weeks just as busy as everyone else. You truly might make someone’s day a little brighter by smiling and being patient with them.

EDITORIAL–THE EAGLE’S VIEW

Senate budget practices raise questions Over the past couple of weeks, it has become clear that, as students, we aren’t quite sure where and how our money is being spent. It also seems that those in charge of handling our money aren’t sure exactly how much there is and aren’t keeping up to date records.

Last week, after the budget for The Big Event was vetoed, The Eagle requested documents with the most recent budget projections from AFB that was presented to Senate prior to the veto. The document presented to Senate, Monday, Nov. 5, showed that if they did allocate the $10,000 requested by The Big Event, and subtracted the recommended amounts for other spring events such as Spring Days and Nearly Naked Mile, there would be a remaining balance of $187.05. The document sent Tuesday night, Nov. 6, to The Eagle had been modified and showed a remaining balance of $946.31. Wednesday morning, Nov. 7, when The Eagle met with Lellisse Umeta, sophomore of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and Student Activities Coordinator Megan Northrup to clarify the numbers and request a detailed spreadsheet of Senate finances, Northrup reviewed their spreadsheet and found that it was not up-to-date.

When asked about missing spending totals for clubs for homecoming, Northrup said that they did have the information, they just had not totaled the costs.

According to Northrup, her plan is to double check the budgets at the end of each semester, because CAB Vice Chair of Finance Isaac Langan, senior of McCook, who was elected to his position on April 24, is still new to his position and learning.

“My plan is to just double check everything,” Northrup said.

“I don’t have time right now, it’s a lot of paperwork, but at the end of the semester just to double check and go through. We have some documentation but it is a lot of accounting so I think (Langan) just needs to relook at that.”

According to Umeta, her and Northrup spent the next several hours Wednesday afternoon, Nov. 7, after reporters left, going through receipts and updating their records. Whether the budget would have been updated, had The Eagle not requested it, is unclear.

Without an updated budget, it is our opinion that Senate is not able to make an informed decision on any financial matter, whether it is The Big Event, Spring Days, Nearly Naked Mile or a Senate Christmas Party.

It is true that, due to a decrease in enrollment, budget cuts need to be made. When fewer students enroll at CSC, that means there is a decrease in the student activity fees that feed the budget for CAB and Senate. Hard decisions must be made, but some events are seeing larger cuts than others.

Last year, The Big Event received $10,178.55. This year, AFB has recommended $5,000. Spring Days, which received $26,450 last year, was recommended $10,000 for this year.

Nearly Naked Mile’s budget was cut from $8,300 to a recommended $3,000. While, according to AFB budget recommendations, the budget proposed for Senate’s Christmas party is $1,000, only $34.55 less than last year’s budget for the party.

This is a Christmas Party for Student Government, voted on by Student Government - it would be hard to suggest that there isn’t a conflict of interest in that vote.

During the Senate meeting on Nov. 5, senators voted to approve $340 for “Senate Strength Training.” According to President Lukas Klueber, junior of Rapid City, South Dakota, the training is a Gallup aptitude and leadership test which shows people their strengths in five different areas, and is led by Vice President of Human Resources Ann DeMersseman. The Gallup website said the “Top 5 CliftonStrengths” assessment will cost about $20 per person.

However, Senate just spent $4,000 for leadership training Nov. 3 that featured two sessions. According to Northrup, the first session was mandatory for all of senate, while the second session, open to CAB members and students, only had six attendees. Senate also spent an additional $327.90 for seven senators to attend an NSCS conference Nov. 1-2, at Wayne State College to listen to keynote speakers and attend workshops with WSC and Peru State College senators.

The $4,000 for leadership training was open to all students, but Senate was required to go. Adding that with the $340, $327.90 and their $1,000 Christmas party, that equals $5,667.90.

This means that AFB’s recommendation for The Big Event of $5,000 is less than Senate has spent on themselves for leadership tests, training and conferences.

The Big Event at CSC has had over 3,000 student, faculty and staff volunteers and served almost 300 community job sites since it began in 2013, including recurring job sites. The Big Event allows students, faculty and staff to thank the community for their continued support of CSC. Shaunda French-Collins, faculty adviser of The Big Event, said that when The Big Event staff met with Senate members, they were asked to present attendance numbers and additional information about The Big Event. French-Collins referenced a PowerPoint presentation created for the meeting that outlined The Big Event over the past six years in the areas of planning, volunteer participation, jobsite participation and post-evaluation.

numbers from Senate for Spring Days and Nearly Naked Mile.

However, Senate was unable to provide those numbers.

“I know for a fact that our event is not perfect, and it never will be, but we are constantly improving and evaluating year round,” French-Collins said. “So, I said (to the senators), ‘for me that’s a red-flag, and I would urge you to start taking attendance, especially considering the amount of money being spent.’”

It seems that our student government has forgotten that they are elected officials who represent the entire student body.

At the same time, our student body doesn’t seem to be paying attention to the decisions being made regarding their money.

The question now becomes this: are the members of our student government making these decisions to allocate funds on their own accord, or are they being advised to do so by other influences? And if so, are the interests of the entire student body being considered, or just those of our student governments professional development?

Student Senate must also represent our college.

CSC’s mission statement says that CSC aims to “enrich the quality of life in the region by providing educational opportunities, research, service, and programs that contribute significantly to the vitality and diversity of the region.”

Deciding between The Big Event, student leadership training and Spring Days, what do you believe supports and maintains that mission?

In an email sent yesterday morning to organization presidents and advisors, Campus Activities Board Chair Kimberly Hernandez stated, “At the most recent Campus Activities Board meeting (11/12), the Campus Activities Board executive board and I asked each representative if their organizations would be willing to allocate a portion of their budgets to co-sponsoring The Big Event. CAB representatives were instructed to relay core information about the subject to their clubs.”

“I am hoping we, as campus leaders, can rally together as a great number or students have expressed how important The Big Event means to them and the community,” Hernandez said.

It is our opinion that given the current financial situation, Senate should also make deductions from their personal allocations. Is it more beneficial to spend $1,000 on a dinner party for a select few or to put the money toward something that will impact the entire community?

After all of their leadership training, they should know that putting the needs of others before your own is key to leadership.

You can’t lead if no one is willing to follow you.

“The [pieces] that I picked were definitely the favorites that I’ve worked on throughout my whole degree,” Voorhis said regarding the program.

After performing two pieces, the ensemble left the stage and sat among audience members while Voorhis performed “Portrait of Tracy,” a solo work for bass guitar written by renowned bassist Jaco Pastorius.

The eerie, bell-like composition gave Voorhis an opportunity

to showcase his ability with the work’s unique sound. The effect was created by manipulating the bass strings to produce overtones.

The concert ended with what Voorhis noted as one of the most influential bass anthems of all time.

“School Days,” by Stanley Clarke, is a “raw and powerful showcase of bass guitar as a solo instrument and requires the player to really dig into the notes,” Voorhis said in his program notes.

Voorhis said he practiced roughly four hours a day over the

summer and spends five to six hours in practice each day during the school year.

Voorhis will graduate in December with a Bachelor of Arts in Applied Music. After graduation, Voorhis said he is planning on moving to a larger city to seek opportunities in music industry, teaching music privately and gigging as much as possible.

The next music department event is CSC’s Faculty and Student Composer’s Concert, 7 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 29. The concert is free and open to the public.

LOVE BEHIND BARS CSC theater department presents “Criminals in Love”

“Running is the best option when the world tries to make you insane,” William said in George F. Walker’s play, “Criminals in Love.”

Temporary sanity, destiny, fate, relationships and bonds are just a few of the recurring themes throughout the theater program’s most recent production in Memorial Hall’s Black Box Theatre.

With a minimal and easily moveable set, the play relies heavily upon the characters and the relationships they build along the way.

The play opens in a grassy schoolyard slope in what we understand to be a rundown neighborhood. We’re introduced right away to young lovers, Junior Dawson and Gail Quinn, played by Caleb Twite, freshmen of White River, South Dakota, and Courtney Smith, junior of Hampton, respectively. The audience learns that Junior’s father, Henry “Senior” Dawson, played by Carter Thiele, sophomore of Oakland, is in jail and going to be sentenced soon. William, played

by Casey Kukowski, senior of Pine Bluffs, Wyoming, is then introduced, sleeping on the sidewalk across the way.

Throughout the performance, Junior wrestles with his family’s history and the looming likelihood that he’ll follow his father’s path and become a criminal. We’re presented with the idea of chronic criminal offenses and concepts such as nature versus nurture whenever Thiele is on stage. He and Gail are constantly presented with the reality that criminal life isn’t going to lead very far and will inevitably end with them in separate prisons, a thought that the young lovers vehemently oppose.

While visiting his father at the city jail, Junior learns that his uncle has just gotten out of jail and needs to use Junior’s house as a storage unit for some of his criminal operations. Junior is opposed to the idea, but he goes along with it because, despite the rocky relationship between him and his father, Junior still loves him. He can’t face the reality that his father will be killed if Junior doesn’t go along with the plans. Gail’s love for Junior drags her into the mix, while William’s need to fill the role of “teacher” in Junior’s life leads him

to tag along.

Gail’s childhood best friend, Sandy Miles, played by Shanie Hollenbeck, junior of Estelline, South Dakota, and Junior’s aunt, Wineva Dawson, played by Megan Black, freshman of West Valley City, Utah, complete the upstarting “gang.”

The two young lovers are constantly seeking to get out of the criminal activity, but Wineva’s intimidation and the threat on Henry Dawson’s life keeps them involved even as the stakes continue to increase.

Walker’s satirical script calls into question the differences between social classes and the idea of destiny while also looking at more personal concepts such as selfishness and greed. The satirical component, though, will having you constantly laughing throughout the play, despite its more intense and mature concepts.

Performances run tonight through Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. The play is free however, seat reservations are recommended as the Black Box Theatre has limited seating. Reservations can be made online at csc.edu/vpa/theatre/reservation. index.csc.

Community and student choir perform concert Eagle Staff The Community Chorus and Concert Choir ensembles performed both as individual groups and one combined choir during Sunday's fall concert at the Chadron Arts Center.

The Community Chorus opened the concert, performing four pieces to a full house.

"I was pleased to see a capacity crowd at the concert," Choir Director Joel Schreuder, professor of music, said.

Following Community Chorus, Community Choir performed five pieces, leaving the stage to the men afterward to perform a piece commemorating the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I, which fell on the date of the performance.

The men performed "In Flander's Field," a poem written by Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae and arranged by Stephen Chatman.

Schreuder directed both ensembles Sunday, a first compared to previous concerts directing solely Concert Choir.

For the past several years, Schreuder and former music

professor Una Taylor shared in conducting the two ensembles, Taylor directing Community Chorus and Schreuder directing Concert Choir. Following her retirement in spring, Schreuder assumed her role and now is the sole director of both ensembles.

"I thoroughly enjoyed working with the Community Choir, and I hope to see even more community members in the choir next semester," Schreuder said.

Sports Editor Brandon Davenport described the performance as "dynamic" and "beautiful."

He added that he was impressed by both choirs and enjoyed the selections by

Brahms and "In Flander's Field."

The next choir performance will be the Holiday Concert at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 6, in the Memorial Hall Auditorium.

Mari Sandoz Wacipi set for Saturday Event hosted by Native American Club as both a celebration and contest Chessa Parker Reporter The annual Native American Powwow, also known as the Mari Sandoz Wacipi, is set to start at 8 a.m., Saturday, November 17, in the Student Center Ballroom.

The event does not have set time constraints, but it could last until 8 p.m.

The event is put on by the Native American Club with the primary sponsor being the Mari Sandoz Heritage Society.

“The Powwow allows for a solid connection among CSC, the Mari Sandoz Heritage Society, and the local Native American community,” David Nesheim, adviser of the Native American Club, said.

Nesheim said the powwow is not only a celebration, but also a contest that requires a heavy time commitment.

“The Powwow dancers put a lot of time and effort into their regalia. They put a lot of time and effort into their craft,” Nesheim said.

The budget for the Powwow is set at $8,500, which is an increase from last year’s.

fered for the drummers and dancers. Students are invited to come if interested.

Last year’s Powwow saw 86 dancers and 45 drummers with groups including White River Crossing, Elk Nation and Lakota Tribe.

Twenty-one students and 26 community members attended the 2017 Powwow.

According to the Chadron State College events calendar, admission is free and everyone is welcome to this event.

Guests can park anywhere in residential or commuter parking areas.

About 150 people attended the hour-long concert and listened to two bands perform, both as individ-

ual ensembles and in unison.

The Community Band consists of 26 members, made up of students, CSC faculty and community members. The group opened the concert with four selections, starting with “Antares,” by Richard Saucedo.

The next selection was “Three Chorale Preludes,” by William Latham. Before starting the preludes, Wojcik provided a history of chorale preludes.

These preludes, as explained by Wojcik, were once thought to be used in church services to introduce a hymn. However, their purpose is not entirely clear.

The final two selections performed were “Gershwin by George!,” arranged by Jerry Brubaker and “The Rakes of Mallow,” by Leroy Anderson. “Gershwin by George!,” was a medley of famous George Gershwin pieces, including “I Got Rhythm” and “Rhapsody in Blue.”

“The Rakes of Mallow,” a traditional Irish song and polka, contrasted from the medley heard in the previous song and acted as a lively conclusion to their set.

Following a short intermission, the Wind Symphony settled into their places onstage and performed their first piece, “In Flight,” com-

posed by Samuel Hazo.

These 28 performers, comprised of students and two faculty members, performed five pieces ranging in style and difficulty.

After their first selection, the ensemble then performed “Shepherd’s Hey,” by Percy Grainger, “Our American Heroes,” by Steve Rouse and “Oscillation,” by Sean O’Loughlin.

Wind Symphony performed the last two movements of “First Suite for Band,” by Alfred Reed for their closing selection.

Angela Smith, 21, junior of Kemmerer, Wyoming, said she felt that

their group’s hard work paid off in this concert.

“We made great strides in the pieces we learned as we all overcame individual challenges,” she said.

After Wind Symphony performed their five pieces, the Community Band returned to stage to join Wind Symphony in one final piece, “Americans We,” by Henry Fillmore.

The next Music Department performance, CSC's Faculty and Student Composer's Concert, will be from 7-8 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 29.

This concert will be free and open to the public.

CSC men drop to 1-2 in openers Brandon Davenport Sports Editor Following a 1-1 home stand to open the season, the Eagles men’s basketball team suffered their first road loss, falling 69-83 to Augustana, Tuesday evening, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

The loss drops Chadron to 1-2 after having split games with Texas A&M International and Texas A&M-Kingsville, Friday and Saturday, at home to start their season.

Unlike their previous games against Texas opponents, Chadron got the offense it’s been looking for early in games, Tuesday, with the team hitting 46.9 percent of their field goals and 6-13 three-point shots in the first half. Heading into the second Chadron trailed just 37-38.

Unfortunately for the Eagles, Augustana came out strong, building a nine-point lead just three minutes into the half, which they extended to a high of 21 points late in the game.

Despite the improved offense, Chadron sent Augustana to the line 21 times in the second half. A Viking sank their free-throw 76.7 percent of the time, accounting for 17 points. The Vikings outscored Chadron 36-16 in the paint.

Chadron’s offense was led by Jeremy Ruffin, senior of Chicago, who hit five of seven field goals, a three-pointer and four of six from the line for 15 points. He, along with teammate Charles Gavin, senior of Denver, also led the Eagles with six rebounds. Both Michael Sparks, junior of Denver, and Brady Delimont, sophomore of Ainsworth, scored double-digits in the game, Sparks with 13 points and Delimont with 12.

Wrestlers ready for bout with nation's best Brandon Davenport Sports Editor

The Chadron State wrestling squad faces a stiff challenge at the start of the season as the group squares off against St. Cloud University, the top NCAA DII wrestling team, this evening, in Minnesota.

The Huskies, who have won three of the past four DII national championships, got off to an expectedly hot start, placing a wrestler in the top spot of 10 weight classes in their opening action of this season at the Dakota Wesleyan Open, in Mitchell, South Dakota, Saturday.

According to the team’s website, the Huskies have not lost a dual since January of 2017.

“We have been talking about this dual since April,” CSC Wrestling Head Coach Brett Hunter said. “I think having the opportunity to wrestle the best team in the nation this early really helps keep

Oct. 8, Hunter said the first step to preparing for the coming season was to solidify the team’s lineup.

“We feel like we have a good handle on our lineup, so now we just need to prepare and watch

film on St. Cloud, and continue to get better each practice,” Hunter said following the Black and Cardinal event.

24 Chadron wrestlers will make the trip to battle St. Cloud, with the group also traveling to the Finn Grinacker Open, in Moorhead, Minnesota, Saturday.

CSC standout Brock Thumm, senior of Watervliet, Michigan, will not make the trip due to his current role as a student teacher at Chadron High School.

The journey to Minnesota presents an early season challenge for the group of Eagle wrestlers which includes several new faces, but Coach Hunter welcomes the test.

“We accept the challenges of long road trips,” Hunter said. “We find the positives…It’s a great way to keep building relationships with (the team) without having ‘coach mode’ always on.”

Football ends season with loss Colorado Mines Brandon Davenport Sports Editor The Chadron Eagles’ season came to a close, Saturday, in Golden, with a 49-20 defeat at the hands of the Colorado School of Mines Orediggers.

Mines offense, which had 763 yards in the game, scored early and often despite Chadron’s best defensive efforts.

The loss brings the Eagles’ season to a close with a 7-3 record. A win might have meant a playoff bid.

Mines’ first possession went 75 yards on 11 plays, finished by a five-yard run by Orediggers running back Cameron Mayberry, junior of Stillwater, Oklahoma.

Chadron wasn’t able to find the same success on their own first drive, but a missed Orediggers field goal from 27-yards out opened the door for the Eagles to tie the game in the first quarter.

The Eagles’ ensuing drive ate over six minutes of the clock as Chadron drove 80 yards to the 1-yard line where Kevin Coy Jr., senior of Davenport, Florida, punched into the end zone to tie the game. Earlier in the drive CSC quarterback Dalton Holst, sophomore of Gillette, Wyoming, found receiver Chad Mikelson, redshirt freshman of Julesburg, Colorado, for a gain of 35 yards to keep the drive alive after the Eagles were forced to third-and-20 from the Mines 47-yard line.

Chadron wouldn’t score again until late in the third quarter when Holst again found Mikelson for a 22-yard TD. Chadron receiver Cole Thurness, sophomore of Rapid City, accounted for the Eagles final score of the game on one of his patented big receiving plays that went 80 yards and into the end zone.

Despite the loss, Chadron’s defense managed to pick off Orediggers quarterback Isaac Harker, senior of Lebanon, Indiana, three times. The Eagles Deandre Barthwell, junior of Westland, Michigan, Demetrius McFadden, junior of Pa-

hokee, Florida, and Zecharie James, senior of Hampton, Virginia, were credited with the interceptions.

Barthwell and James’s interceptions came on back-to-back Oredigger possessions late in the first half.

The Chadron defense was led by Keenan Johnson, senior of Chadron, who had 12 tackles, two solo and one assisted.

Teammate Tyree Fryar, junior of Burlington, New Jersey, and Tayven Bray, freshman of Highlands Ranch, Colorado, each had nine tackles.

Holst threw 63 times in the contest, completing 32 passes for 412 yards and two touchdowns. The sophomore quarterback was sacked on three occasions. Holst passed to nine CSC teammates, none more than Mikelson who caught 10 for 147 yards and one touchdown. Thurness was Holst’s next most found receiver, catching six passes for 111 yards.

The Oredigger defense did well to contain the typically strong Chadron run, limiting the Eagles to just 52 yards on the ground. Coy took the ball just 21 yards on 10 carries.

Eagles win one, lose one during opening road trip Brandon Davenport Sports Editor The CSC women got their first win of the season, and their first loss, during a Texas road trip to begin their season.

The Eagles’ women won their first game of the regular season 55-51, Friday, in Laredo, Texas, against Texas A&M International, and received their first loss, Saturday, in Kingsville, Texas, against Texas A&M-Kingsville 37-61.

Kingsville had three double-digit scores in the game, Brynae Thompson, junior of Houston, with 13; Victoria Salinas, junior of Corpus Christi, with 11, and Danielle Meador, junior of Corpus Christi, with 10. As a group the Javelinas shot 35.1 percent and netted 38 points from Eagle turnovers.

The Javelinas jumped out to a 17-8 lead after the first period and outscored the Eagles in three of four. The Eagles managed to get the best of Kingsville in the second, scoring 10 to the Javelinas eight.

Mickenzie Brennan, senior of Ellsworth, led the team in rebounds, netting seven total, three on offense and four on defense.

"We didn't find a way to score today like we needed to," Chadron Head Coach Janet Raymer said to CSC Sports Information following the game.

"When you're scoring under 40 points, it's hard to win."

The Eagles fared much better Friday, in Laredo, with a 55-51 win over the Dustdevils.

Chadron survived a seven-point third period, leading by just two points heading into the fourth. International managed to pull to just a 51-52 deficit with just over a minute remaining, but the Eagles sealed the win on a Stevenson three-pointer with 0:43 left.

Taryn Foxyn, sophomore of Aurora, Colorado, led the

Eagles with 13 points in the contest, Stevenson had 11. The Eagles shot 40.4 percent.

International's Tantashea Giger, senior of Lincoln, was the games leading scoring with 15 points. Teammate Jaden Gonzalez, junior of Plainview, Texas, was next best with 10.

The Eagles return home for their first Chicoine Center contest of the season, this Friday, to face Montana State-Billings. The Yellowjackets are coming off a 73-65 defeat of University of Providence in their debut game this season.

The Cougars, who play South Dakota School of Mines, Friday, defeated Ouachita Baptist 91-44 to begin their season, but fell to Henderson State, Saturday, 63-75.

Saturday, the Eagles will play host to Sioux Falls in Chadron's last action until after Thanksgiving.

Prior to the season, Chadron received 42 votes and was ranked 14 of 16 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference’s preseason coaches poll.

Friday’s home game will include a CSC Student Athlete Advisory Committee sponsored canned food drive. Attendees can bring two non-perishable canned food items to gain admission to the game.

Hunter has recently celebrated the commitments of six wrestlers he plans to add to the group in the future.

In revamping the team’s approach to recruitment, Hunter is focused on bringing good character traits, not necessarily talents to the roster.

“All six of these guys are excellent students,” Hunter said. “They all live the championship culture by doing the right things on and off the mat. We’re okay passing up the talented kids if we can continue to bring great kids to Chadron State who do the right things.”

Thursday’s dual with St. Cloud is set to begin at 6:00 p.m.
