RLA helps kick off Spring Days activities for the week Last night, Spring Days kicked off with opening ceremonies and a cornhole tournament. Tonight, there will be a Mr. and Mrs. Spring Days pageant starting at 7 p.m. A petting zoo, a club fair, inflatables and bongo ball will

be on Friday. A JDFR walk and the DJ Danc Party will follow on Saturday.

Spring Days events will be closed with Free Movie Night on Sunday at The Eagle Theatre.

CAB discusses ideas for Week of Welcome Loren Ritter Sports Editor Ideas for the 2018 Week of Welcome are now being accepted. So far, the idea of going to Chadron State Park for a day has been suggested. Ideas can be submitted to Kimberly Hernandez, Deena Kennell, or Megan Northrup.

The Spring Days event schedule will be as follows: Mr. and Mrs. Spring Days is 90s theme on April 12. 11 p.m. to 3 p.m. petting zoos will be set up in the Rangeland Complex on April 13. Two different petting zoos are coming, one with farm animals and the other

with exotic animals.

The club fair will be in the Chicoine Center from 3-6 p.m. this Friday, and will be the only club fair of the semester, due to the Spring club fair being canceled.

Cardinal Key club will be hosting a JDRF walk to support juvenile diabetes starting at 9 a.m. with the walk beginning at 10 a.m. at the Armstrong Gymnasium Saturday April 14.

The Nest cookout during the Saturday softball games has been canceled due to weather. The softball games are now rescheduled for noon Sunday, April 15, and 11 a.m. Monday April 16.

The DJ House Party will be taking place from 9 p.m. to midnight, Saturday, in the Student Center.

The last Free Movie Night of the semester will take place this Sunday. The movies that will be showcased are ‘A Quiet Place’, ‘I Can Only Imagine’, and ‘Rampage’.

Free Bowling Night will be April 22.

Nominations for the 2018-2019 CAB Executive Board will open next week, and elections will follow the week after.

“Every position is up for grabs, This is a great resume builder, you get involved with everything on campus. This is a great networking tool, and it’s really fun,” Hernandez said.

For the position of Chair, the nominee must have been on CAB for at least one year, while the rest of the positions only require one semester of CAB involvement.

“They open and close at noon, so keep a look out for that,” Chief Justice Samantha Merrill said. “It is important to get everyone to vote.”

Senate has a current budget of $8,402.75 in unallocated funds.

Senate allocated $210 for two Platinum Eagle awards. These awards will be given to one male student and one female student who display signs of leadership and are graduating in May. The requested budget covered the cost of the award as well as the engraving of the recipient’s name. Senate also allocated $525 for the third annual Rising Sophomore Ceremony held at 7 p.m. on April 19 in the Student Center. The event is open to all students, faculty, staff and guests of the nominated freshmen. The breakdown of the budget is as follows: $64.50 for 10 dozen brownies; $72.50 for 10 dozen turtle brownies; $58 for 10 dozen cookies;

“This has been a nice strategy to contribute to retention of your peers,” Adviser Deena Kennell said. “So, it would be worthy of your consideration and a good use of your money.”

In another matter, AFB asked Senate to approve the budget recommendations totaling to $135,131.47. Senate approved $120,431.47 of the presented budget, minus the budget requested for The Eagle which came to $14,700 because of questions they had about their operating costs.

After an email discussion that took place early Tuesday, between Vice President of Finance Lukas Klueber, Senator at Large, and AFB member Tierra Snyder, Deena Kennell, and The Eagle advisor Michael Kennedy, these questioned were answered. Voting to approve the budget will take place during the Senate meeting on Monday.

In another matter, CAB’s last Free Movie Night of the semester is on Sunday. Doors open at 6:45 p.m., and students should check the Facebook and Twitter pages for the titles being shown.

CAB is also hosting the last Free Bowling Night at Hilltop Lanes from 6-9 p.m. on April 22.

In another matter, Secretary Konery Klueber, on the executive board of the Health and Well-Being Committee, talked to senators about Mental Health Awareness Month.

“April is mental Health Awareness Month, and so be talking to your constituents about it,” Konery Klueber said. “Make sure that you are keeping an eye on your friends, and your dorm mates because that is a big issue on our campus as well as other campuses.”

The Public Relations Club and the Dean’s Counsel would like to invite all CSC students to Memorial Hall on April 30 for a showing of the documentary “Angst.” There will be one showing at 1 p.m., and another at 7 p.m. After the film, students will be asked to break into small groups and talk about “stopping the stigma” against seeking help for mental health related issues.

“As mental health and, especially, anxiety become more and more common in the U.S., students need to see that you are not alone,” Faculty Adviser Kurt Kinbaucher said.

Snow storm wrecks Scholastic Day Torri Brumbaugh Managing Editor Only 177 high school students out of the 1,150 students attended Scholastic Day, Friday, due to winter weather.

“To be honest, there were a few minutes where I was thinking that we probably should have canceled it,” Director of Market Development and Co-Chair of Scholastic Day Danielle Lecher said. “However, I do know that we had one school that had driven in on Thursday night and was staying the night at a hotel.”

Along with one school committed to the competition, Lecher said two other schools said they were coming no matter what. A total of nine schools showed out of the initial 42. A rush of school cancellations came in on Friday morning, but at that time it was too late to cancel the event.

Although the turnout for Scholastic Day was not as anticipated, Lecher said that it was a good way to test out new changes that the Scholastic Day committee made for this year.

After Lecher and Director of Admissions Lisa Stein joined the committee, Scholastic Day

started a focus on recruitment.

T-shirts were provided to students in order to help with recruitment. The committee also took advantage of the student ambassadors in having them help with checking in schools and escorting students to their test sites.

“We wanted to make sure that they checked in with someone and were greeted so that they could give everyone their information and knew everything that was available to them, including escorts to the testing locations, which was not really provided before, and a list of activities. It also helped us know who was here and who was not,” Lecher said.

Other changes include a revamped activities schedule with the help of Megan Northrup, the student activities coordinator, and additional communications leading up to the event. A club fair was also added to Scholastic Day which proved to be “a really good showcase of what we do at CSC.” Despite the weather, Lecher believes the event went well for the schools that attended. She is ready to test the new changes to Scholastic Day next year with a larger group of students.

Lack of sex education in schools is effecting college students When only 13 states require sex education to be medically accurate, a lot is left up to interpretation for students and young people regarding their sexual health. According to the Guttmacher Institute, 37 states are pushing for abstinence-only, which, STI rates have shown us, isn’t exactly effective.

With a lack of national standard in the US of who gets taught what (or when they get taught), students get a range of information depending on what state they live in.

As for Nebraskans, our laws do not require sex education. The law states that it is a matter of local control, however the Nebraska State Board of Education supports “an abstinence approach to risk behaviors associated” with “sexual activity.”

This practice reflects well with Nebraska’s STI rates compared to the rest of the country.

According to the Nebraska STD program, in 2013 the rate of infection for chlamydia was 1166.5 per 100,000

women ages 20-44 and the rate of infection for gonorrhea was 416.5 per 100,000 women ages 20-44. It was also stated that the chlamydia rate within Nebraska has only increased since then while the gonorrhea rate is stable but high.

Chadron State remains no exception to these statistics. In fact, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported Dawes County has the highest rate of chlamydia in Nebraska according to 2016 STD Surveillance.

The Eagle advocates for more mandated sex education in schools for the state of Nebraska. The benefits outweigh the awakwardness that that can occur when discussing the topic with students. Sex education doesn’t focus solely around the physical act of sex.

A quality sex education class should cover topics such as health of male and female genitalia, how to have safe sex, consent, STI’s and qualities of healthy and unhealthy relationships.

and female genitalia to be able to identify what’s normal and what’s not concerning our reproductive organs.

For females, it’s important to learn symptoms of STI’s, ovarian cancer, as well as when they should visit a gynecologist. The same is true for men, learning symptoms of testicular cancer, which can affect men between the ages of 15 and 35 and STI’s.

Chadron State College is taking proactive steps towards helping our students with the recent opening of Western Community Health Resources on campus providing reproductive health care services in Crites Hall, room 012, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m, Monday through Friday. They offer highly confidential visits discussing birth control options, condoms, HIV and STI testing and sexual health counseling.

Sexual education is not something to be taken lightly and we shouldn’t be shy to talk about it especially when addressing concerns regarding our health.

Don’t stress about getting a “summer body”

Bright Side Rachel Mitchell Columnist It’s almost the end of the semester. I do not know about you but I am pretty excited about summer.

The warm weather, long nights and new memories to be made are calling my name. Unfortunately, along with all these wonderful things there is something everyone talks about when summer starts to roll around: beach bodies.

I have never been really fond of that term, because, let’s be honest, who came up with that? Whose standards are we to be judged by? Why is having a “beach body” important and pressed by society?

Well I have good news for you my friends. You do not have to have summer beach body. Just because you are

not the size of a Victoria Secret model or buff like Channing Tatum doesn’t make your body unacceptable for summer.

If it makes you feel better to go to the gym a few times a week and eating veggies and tacos, that’s fine. If you work two jobs and eat salads and cheeseburgers but don’t always have time to work out that’s fine. If you prefer to just hang out and do what-

ever you feel like on a particular day, guess what? That’s totally fine too!

I think both women and men are expected to reach not entirely realistic goals for summer bodies.

I also think we should love who we are and support others. Everyone is in different stages of their life and has different goals. Everyone has a different past and a different body type and that’s fine. We need to be more accepting of ourselves and each other.

We also can’t let the expectations of social media and society infringe who we are. We should all be happy in our skin without feeling like we have to compete with the person sitting next to us.

Next time you are scrolling through Instagram or watching a movie and feel like you don’t have a “summer-ready bod,” don’t feel bad and don’t beat yourself up about it.

It is completely crazy to compare yourself to fitness gurus since they pretty much get paid to work out all day. It’s crazy to compare yourself to that girl you graduated with because you are living your own life.

I encourage you, as summer approaches, to not feel pressured by society and social media. Do not feel like you have to meet a certain standard to be considered beautiful or summer ready.

Love yourself for who you are and how far you’ve come. Love the skin you’re in.

Enjoy the warm weather and that tank top that shows your arms. Wear those shorts that show the stretch marks on your legs.

Don’t be ashamed that you don’t look like some of your friends on Facebook or models in magazines. Be confident in who you are my friends.

Complaining doesn’t help a situation, so keep it to a minimum Yen Nguyen Reporter Three weeks ago, we suffered a big loss: Stephen Hawking. Even if you are not a science lover, you have likely heard of the great scientist. He was well-known not only for his scientific achievements, but also for his wit and humor.

Hawking once said, “People won’t have time for you if you are always angry and complaining.”

His quote makes me think about my attitude in life. My attitude varies through situations and it’s not always the same.

I can be a positive person when I’m in the good mood if both internal and external elements allow it.

I tend to look on the bright side of an issue and have reasons not to hate people on a daily basis. But it’s not always the case.

I do complain. A lot, in fact! Especially when I’m stressed out regarding school and work. But who doesn’t?

When I feel bad, I let all my feelings go and pour it all out to my friends. I assume they are always here, ready to listen about my bad days. And sometimes, I have bad days the whole week.

Whenever I recall that kind of terri-

ble week, I feel like a horrible version of myself just kicked out the cheerful one. I complain about my life whenever I can.

So does complaining make me feel better? No. I feel like once I form the habit of complaining, it’s not easy to stop.

It actually drags my moods down even more. It changes my attitude about everything negatively. And that’s not the way it should work.

Complaining does not make my problems get better. The negative thought cannot help you solve it any faster. In fact, negative thoughts can actually bring down your brain performance to solve problems.

Moreover, when you hold all negative thoughts, you somehow present an image that you may not like it later. No one likes a person who’s always grumpy, looks down to the ground, or finds people to complain.

But please don’t get me wrong. Holding everything inside you is not good either.

Don’t bury your feelings when they are still alive. You have all the rights to pour it all out to your friends.

Just don’t make it a habit because it can actually affect you negatively in the long run. Attitude can be contagious.

You don’t want to change the atmosphere of the room right after you walk in, right?

Bananas are a powerhouse fruit Abigail Swanson Contributor Bananas are one of the most widely recognized fruits, right up there with apples and oranges. Yet, many people are strongly opposed to bananas.

At least a third of my friends hate the yellow fruit, while another third love bananas. I am ambivalent to bananas; they are not my favorite fruit, but I do enjoy them occasionally. However, I was curious about the health benefits of bananas.

Everyone knows that bananas are a good source of potassium, but in an article on Medical News Today, Megan Ware RDN LD, noted that bananas are a good source of fiber, and that they help prevent asthma as well as boosting memory.

In the words of the “Doctor Who’s” Ninth Doctor, “Bananas are good.” So maybe it wouldn’t be such a bad idea to munch on a banana on the way to your morning exam, you never know, it might help you get that “A.” The real problem with bananas, if

you decide to pick one up, is making sure you get the best one.

My ideal banana is yellow, with just a hint of green on the corners, and I like bananas smaller rather than larger. If a banana is showing the brown signs of age then it can be graduated on to fruit salad, smoothies, or even banana bread.

Now that you have selected your perfect banana, the real challenge begins; getting through that nasty peel to the sweet goodness underneath.

I grew up peeling from the top (or stem) down, which worked well

enough on ripe bananas, but for the slightly green kind you need to peel from the bottom. Just pinch the bottom of the banana (you might need to roll the tip around with your fingers a bit) then grab a section and pull away.

If both methods fail, you can just chop the banana in half and peel from the middle.

Any way you choose to liberate the soft fruit, when you eat your next banana, remember that bananas are not just food, but also memory-boosting, fiber-filled, potassium powerhouses.

Learn to say no Kylee Odenbach Reporter

Are you a “yes man” or a “yes woman?” Many of us say yes to unnecessary tasks every single day that make our lives harder than they need to be for us. Maybe we do it because we are “people pleasers” and we aim to impress, but in the end it just causes more stress. We all should learn to say no every now and then for the sake of our sanity.

What are some situations where it’s appropriate to say no? Although we love our friends, sometimes we do unnecessary things to please them. We might meet up with a friend, run errands for them or fill in at work for them. Before taking on these tasks, ask yourself if you truly have the time.

Don’t overload yourself with these situations if you have other priorities. Most people pleasers will probably not be impressed with this advice, but if you have true friends they will understand when you say no. ‘ Another situation where many people feel they can’t say no is if they’re involved in a club or a committee. It’s great to be involved in clubs and committees, but only take on as much as you can handle. Put in some effort, but don’t take on so

many tasks that you stress yourself out.

How do we say no? Certain situations don’t allow us to say no, especially if it’s a request from a boss. However, we can say no to the situations we can control.

Try to have confidence in yourself when saying no and be honest with the person or group that you don’t have the time or the resources.

You could explain to them that you have other important things going on in your life that take first priority.

Why should you say no? Saying yes to every task that we’re asked to do can overload us and cause stress and anxiety. If you say no every once in a while, you’re respecting yourself and putting yourself first. You may notice that you are accomplishing more in your life by saying no sometimes.

I’m definitely not promoting selfishness, but times exist where we just need to learn to say no.

When someone spreads themselves too thin, they often end up not doing a quality job anyways.

Say yes to the things you’re passionate about and put your all into it. Learn to say no every once in awhile and you just might notice some of your stress being taken away.

Lifestyles Editor Four seniors were honored at Friday’s reception in the Main Gallery at Memorial Hall for the spring senior art show, titled “Fourfold.”

Each of the four seniors showcased different pieces highlighting their abilities from a variety of mediums including oil painting, ceramics, stained glass and graphic design.

“It’s a collection of the strongest pieces and what we are proudest of,” Kendra Baucom, 21, senior of Colorado Springs, Colorado, said.

The four seniors exhibiting art pieces in “Fourfold” are all graduating with bachelor’s degrees with a Comprehensive Major in Art. However, three of the four seniors are graduating with an option in graphic design. These seniors are Taylor Juelfs, 21, senior of Potter, Troi Arnold, 22, senior of Cozad and Holly Real, 21, senior of Wright, Wyoming.

Baucom is graduating with an option in museum studies.

The show is a requirement for all graduates of the undergraduate art program. Students are in charge of hanging, titling and lighting their pieces, along with handling the advertising and publicity.

“They did all of the promotion for it,” Trudy Denham, assistant professor of visual art, said.

The show is used to showcase the works of the seniors throughout their college career.

“The entire event was planned by them,” Denham said.

The planning for the show began at the beginning of the semester. As part of the class, the students were responsible for developing a theme and concept for the show.

The idea of “Fourfold” came about after the four seniors were brainstorming about what to name the show.

“What do you call it when four people do something?”

Taylor Juelfs, 21, senior of Potter, said.

The name “Fourfold” came from the culmination of the four artists with differing backgrounds coming together for one cohesive show.

The four seniors each helped with promotional materials and design, but Arnold was the one who created the final version of the poster seen around campus.

Each of the artists had between 10 and 12 pieces on display.

Arnold displayed photography and stained glass along with graphic design.

Baucom exhibited pieces using materials including stained glass, drawing and oil painting. Her favorite piece was her rope sculpture, titled “Entangled Community.”

“It’s something I hadn’t really done before, and it was cool to explore that,” Baucom said.

When asked of her plans after graduation, she just wants to “be happy.” Baucom’s goal, however, is to work in a museum.

Juelfs was most proud of her photography, which she said she has been doing for about two years. Juelfs’s other pieces included graphic design and ceramics.

Real displayed ceramics, sculpture, oil paintings, graphic design and photography.

She said she has been doing art “forever.”

“I was in sixth grade when I decided I wanted to go into art,” Real said.

Real’s favorite piece of the show was her portrait of “Becoming Alex.”

She also is proud of her wire-sculpture Toothless, one of the main characters from Dreamworks’s “How to Train your Dragon.”

Real’s favorite medium is pencil drawings, and she “really likes graphite.”

As a graphic design student, Real wants to go into advertising in a bigger city with “more opportunities.”

Despite the snowy weather conditions on Friday, the turnout for the reception was not one to be disappointed in.

Roughly 50 people were in attendance, and the artists of the show were not surprised.

Although concerned for travel, Real knew the local supporters of the art department would be in attendance.

“I knew the [Chadron] community is pretty tight knit,” Real said.

The show opened on Monday, March 26 and closed Tuesday, April 10.

Following Tuesday’s close of the senior art show, an all-student art show will open Monday, April 16. Any student who has taken an art class is eligible to submit a piece for the show.

However, submissions for the all-student art show closed yesterday, April 11.

Rahmig leads golf team in Arkansas Aaron Duin Reporter The Chadron State golf team finished in eighth-place at the Hardscrabble Invitational on Tuesday in Fort Smith, Arkansas. The Eagles shot a team score of 395-386-381-1162 in the 54-hole tournament.

The golfers played 36 holes on Monday followed by the usual 18 on Tuesday. The par 70 course proved difficult for all competitors as no golfer was able to post a round under par. Midwestern State University won the team title shooting 307-295-297-896.

The Eagles were led by Sam Rahmig, junior of Gering. The team leader shot 86-

83-87 for a tournament total of 256 strokes.

Her performance landed her in a tie for 29th place individually. Consistency has been key for Rahmig. All the rounds carded by Rahmig were within four shots of her season stroke average.

“I felt as if my performance for the weekend was about average,” Rahmig said. “That’s what I’ve been shooting around all season.

I’m really proud of our team.”

Adrianna Weeldreyer, freshman of Newell, South Dakota came in second for the Eagles shooting 99-92-91 for a total of 282.

Logan Kasten, freshman of Cheyenne, Wyoming shot 97-106-102-305. Rounding out the Eagles team score was Tori Meschke, fresh-

man of Broken Bow finishing in 42nd with a tournament total of 113-105-101-319.

The Hardscrabble Invitational was the Eagles last opportunity to compete before the RMAC championship. The team has just over a week to sharpen their skills before traveling to Chandler, Arizona to compete.

“I’m really proud of our team. We are pretty young this year so it’s a great building experience and they work hard in everything to get better. I’ve been working on enjoying the game more as I head into my senior season,” Rahmig said.

CSC will play the course at Ocotillo Golf Resort April 22- 24 to contend for the conference championship.

CSC Softball falls to the MSU Denver Roadrunners Devin Fulton Reporter Chadron State softball team struggled offensively, only scoring one point against the Roadrunners of MSU Denver, in Denver this past weekend.

The fourth-ranked RMAC rival swept the eagles, going 4-0 over the weekend.

the one-and-only run of the game thanks to a solo home run. Jessica Jarecki, sophomore of Littleton, Colorado, allowed only four hits and struck out eight batters in six innings. Despite another great pitching performance, the Eagles fell in the first game 1-0.

Megan Horn, sophomore of Colorado Springs, Colorado, pitched the second game of the afternoon, allowing just six hits in the game.

The Eagles only notched three hits, but scored their single run in the sixth to tie up the game.

MSU Denver went to work in the seventh inning, as the Roadrunners got the 3-1 walk-off victory on a double home-run.

On Sunday, Chadron State’s struggles at batting continued, as the Eagles failed to score any points. During the first game, Jarecki struck out another five batters and allowed only three hits. However, an unearned run in the first, and two in the fifth inning was all the Roadrunners needed to get the early 3-0 victory against the Eagles to start the afternoon.

To conclude the series against MSU Denver, the Eagles finally found some success at bat, notching six hits. Despite the improvement, the Roadrunners forced double plays and walked away with another 3-0 victory.

The Eagles currently sit at the ninth spot in the RMAC with a 9-16 conference record. This weekend, Chadron State will host Colorado School of Mines who sit at the fifth spot in the RMAC with a 16-12 conference record.

Anders brings home all-around honors

Kylee Odenbach Reporter Chadron State College cowboy Kalane Anders, junior of Bayard, won the all-around honors this past weekend at the rodeo in Fort Collins at Colorado State University. He scored points in three events and earned 280 points for the CSC rodeo team.

Anders won the steer wrestling event, turning in times of 4.1 and 4.0 seconds in each go-round of the event. He also took fifth place in tie down roping turning in times of 10.0 seconds and 13.1 seconds in each go-round.

Anders also earned points in the team roping event with his partner Brandi Cwach, senior of Geddes, South Dakota. The team took fifth place in the first go-round of the event.

Rowdy Moon, junior of Sargent, and Prestyn Novak, senior of Newell, South Dakota, also placed in the final standing in Fort Collins, Colorado..

Moon tied for fourth through sixth in the final standings of the bareback riding event.

He scored 71 points in the first go-round and 73 points in the second go-round.

Novak brought home sixth place in the tie down roping. He turned in times of 11.0 and 13.6 at the rodeo.

“The men’s rodeo team did well this past weekend. Those who didn’t do well during those events got to loosen up and have a beach full of fun in the costume ribbon roping,” CSC rodeo contestant Tori Huffman, freshman of Burwell said.

Five other CSC rodeo members made the finals at the Colorado State University rodeo.

Kellen Washut, senior of Casper, Wyoming made the finals in the bareback riding. Buck Butterfield, freshman of Worland, Wyoming qualified for the finals in the bull riding. Carson Good, freshman of Long Valley, South Dakota and Cole Retchless, sophomore of Bridgeport both made the finals in the steer wrestling event. Jayde Atkins, sophomore of Broken Bow made the finals in the barrel racing.

Chadron State College’s rodeo team will compete next at Casper College in Casper, Wyoming on April 20-22.

CSC Track athletes take 4 first place finishes Aaron Duin Reporter The Chadron State track and field teams won four first-place finishes at the West Texas A&M Classic this past weekend in Canyon, Texas. The men’s team finished fourth out of the 14 teams in competition with a total of 86.5 points.

On the women’s side, the Eagles placed fifth in a 16team field with 70.5 points. Chadron State competed well despite competing without a full lineup of athletes.

Chadron State delivered strong performances in the multi-events. Chasidy Horton, junior of Fountain, Colorado won the heptathlon with 4,153 points. Gregg Peterson, junior of Thunder Ridge, Colorado finished

the decathlon in a tie for first place with 5,694 points.

Rounding out the Eagles competing in the multi-events was Ty Thurston, sophomore of Yuma, Colorado with a third-place finish in the decathlon.

The Eagles’ success in the multi-events was supplemented by the team’s strength in the throws. Ashlyn Hanson, senior of Seward placed second in the hammer throw with a toss of 178-5. Additionally, Hanson placed third in the javelin in 112 feet, 9 inches. In the discus, Ashton Hallsted, sophomore of Casper, Wyoming, placed third at 157 feet, 5 inches. The throw exceeded the NCAA provisional qualification mark by over 10 feet.

On the track, the Eagles were led by Alisha Heelan, senior of Oshkosh. Heelan won the 400-meter dash

with a time of 59 seconds. On the men’s side, the Eagle runners were led by Marcus Ruhrer, freshman of Campe Verde, Arizona. Ruhrer finished second in the 400-meter intermediated hurdles with a time of 59.18 seconds.

Isaac Grimes, freshman of Rancho Verde, California, won the triple jump with a leap of 47 feet, 5 ¾ inches.

The freshman did not compete in the long jump in Texas but made it through the weekend owning the fourth best mark in NCAA DII in the event due to his strong performance at the Spank Blasing meet earlier in the season.

The Eagles will no longer be attending the Bauer Invitational in Rapid City, South Dakota. Instead, sixteen athletes will be traveling to Colorado School of Mines in Golden to compete in the Kit Mayer Invite this weekend.

CSC choirs selected for world debut of “Three Nebraska Lyrics” Kylee Odenbach Reporter The Chadron State College concert choir, community choir and Ogallala High School choir will premiere a choral work commissioned specifically for Chadron State College, titled “Three Nebraska Lyrics” at 7 p.m., Sunday, in the Memorial Hall Auditorium.

“Three Nebraska Lyrics” was composed by David von Kampen, a composer of Lincoln. The lyrics of the pieces feature the work of Nebraskan poet Becky Boesen, who worked alongside von Kampen on arranging her poetry into music.

“An anonymous donor donated their money for this new choral piece specifically for Chadron State,” Joel Schreuder, professor of music, said.

The poetry and music were both composed over the summer.

“We have never had any piece of music specifically written for us before this. It’s very meaningful to be able to give the premiere for this piece,” Music Accompanist Bobby Pace said.

The three poems included in the piece are “On the Ridge,” “Underneath” and “The Planting Season.” The three poems all highlight different aspects of life in both eastern and western Nebraska.

“On the Ridge” is specific to the Pine Ridge region and its beauty.

“Underneath” is about the Platte River and planting crops.

‘Downsizing’ offers a glimpse at a shrunken-down life Kylee Odenbach Reporter Many people may have heard of the movie “Honey I Shrunk the Kids,” which came out in the late 80s. This film features a father who accidentally shrinks his teenagers to the size of insects.

A more recent film, “Downsizing,” came out in 2017 and features people being shrunk to five inches – on purpose.

“Downsizing” centralizes its plot around giving people the option to live in a tiny world.

A scientist in the beginning of the film offers a way to save the planet by shrinking people to about five inches. He believes that this will help the world produce less pollution and waste.

People have the option to shrink or not.

However, those who decide to shrink down become much wealthier, as their full-size money is worth much more in the tiny world.

People who were living in one-bedroom apartments in the real world or “big” world could afford mansions in the tiny world.

Many people in the film that were not happy with their real lives made the decision to shrink down to five inches.

The movie is deemed as a drama and science fiction film.

The scientific process that people must go through to be shrunk is intriguing.

The drama part of the movie focused on problems that the main character encountered throughout the journey of being shrunk.

I thought that “Downsizing” also could

be categorized as a romance. The main character encountered hard love lessons, but happy love moments as well.

Humor was another genre I believe the film encompassed. Several comical moments are presented in the film that lightens up the mood.

One of my favorite parts of the film is when the main character is first experiencing being shrunken down.

The main character is asked if he is hungry, and then he is offered a saltine cracker. Because of his tiny size, the saltine cracker is bigger than him.

The film involved several different genres and mulled them together nicely.

One of the best parts of the movie is that it has so many teaching moments. It teaches us to be helpful and find our place in the world.

It also teaches us that all we really have in this world is the comfort of other people.

But, the best part of this movie may have been that Matt Damon plays the main character.

Overall, the movie was somewhat entertaining. The idea behind the tiny world was intriguing and entertaining.

I liked that it showcased several different genres in one film. The teaching moments of “Downsizing” really left watchers with things to think about in their daily lives, especially in appreciating what you have.

I would probably rate the film four and a half out of five stars.

I would suggest giving this film a try, especially with its comedic elements and ability to cross into several genres and incorporate life lessons into the plot.

Revolving around a group of gossipy southern ladies in a small-town beauty parlor, the play is alternately hilarious and touching—and, in the end, deeply revealing of the strength and purposefulness which underlies the antic banter of its characters.

“Harling has given his women sharp, funny dialogue…The play builds to a conclusion that is deeply moving.”

Lee’s ‘Go Set a Watchman’ falls flat as sequel to classic novel Sarah Townsend Contributor When the sequel to Harper Lee’s “To Kill a Mockingbird” first came out in 2015, it was one of the most pre-ordered books of all time.

The “publishing event of the decade” is what some referred to the new book as and Lee saw a resurgence of popularity as “Go Set a Watchman” was released. However, the actual book fell a little flat.

“To Kill a Mockingbird” was so successful when it first came out in 1960 because it delved into race relations like nothing ever really had before.

Some called it “an eye-opener for many

Northerners” about segregation in the South.

It would have been a miracle for Lee to come back almost 60 years later and garner the same popularity and success from a sequel.

“Go Set a Watchman” is the story of a college-aged Jean Louise Finch (known as Scout in “To Kill a Mockingbird”), going home and finally understanding just how mistaken she has been about her father, Atticus, and her boyfriend, Henry Clinton.

She finds that they are not exactly the moral champions that she thought they were and because they are associated with the KKK, she finds their racist attitudes are something that she simply cannot come to

terms with.

The novel is focused on the introspective Finch, recalling times when life made sense to her and every thing was easier.

With her brother Jem now dead following a sudden heart attack at age 28 and her trusted maid Calpurnia gone, living with her family, Jean Louise is left wondering how things ended up the sour way they did.

“Go Set a Watchman” is a novel with the potential to be great, but just that: potential. The novel reads slowly and this may be because it was written in the third person.

While there may be problems with “Go Set a Watchman,” it does paint a

more accurate picture of race relations and segregation.

The picture Lee paints in the second installment is raw and does not give off a sympathetic feel towards white attitudes in the South during the civil rights movement.

Overall, the highly anticipated second book of the “To Kill a Mockingbird” series is a little lack luster, but also more truthful.

Readers who want to keep the same nostalgic ideals they gained from “To Kill a Mockingbird” should avoid the sequel.

However, those who want to be challenged, should take the leap and read it, if only to satisfy curiosity and read the words of a literary great.
