Faculty and students discuss enrollment at all-campus meeting Torri Brumbaugh Managing Editor

Students were invited to join faculty, staff and administration, Thursday, during an all-campus meeting regarding CSC’s Strategic Enrollment Management Plan and inquiry on how to increase enrollment.

“Because we are asking for input today, we thought it would be important to include students in the input gathering process,” said Dean Margetts, liberal arts.

CSC President Randy Rhine said, “It’s important that when I, or we, say enrollment, we are not just talking about recruitment and admissions, although that is a part of it.

We are talking about the total population of our students, and that includes undergraduate students, graduate students, online students, full-time, part-time.”

Margetts and Sherry Douglas, associate vice president of student services, introduced the enrollment management plan, although it is not finished. As coleads of the enrollment management team, Margetts, Douglass and the other countless other committee members have been planning the enrollment management plan for over eight months.

The enrollment management plan includes “four high level components:” recruitment, onboarding, retention and completion.

“The idea of this whole document, the enrollment management plan, is that students go through the recruiting, through the onboarding, onto retention and then onto completion so that no student gets left behind,” Douglas said.

Plans for recruitment include increasing inquiries to applicants, increasing applicants to enroll and increasing campus engagement and alignment in recruitment.

BRIEFS Sign up for Pet Therapy CORRECTION;

In the March 29 edition of The Eagle, we incorrectly reported that students were asked to volunteer their pets for Pet Therapy. That was incorrect, faculty and staff were asked to volunteer their pets. The story below reflects that correction.

To help students cope with the stress of finals week, the college is implementing Pet Therapy. Project Strive and RLA are requesting faculty and staff to volunteer their time and pets for Pet Therapy from 5-7 p.m. May 1, near the Clock Tower.

Jennifer Schaer, director of Project Strive TriO, said that for legal reasons, students may not volunteer their pets.

Schaer also said they would like to have three to four dogs from 5-7 p.m., and three to four dogs from 6-7 p.m.

Requirements for volunteering dogs are: 1. A handler stays with the dog at all times; 2. Handlers clean up any messes dogs might make; 3. Insurance and a completed volunteer form. Volunteer forms are due by noon on Friday, April 20, to Associate Director of Residence Life Taylor Osmotherly or Director of Project Strive/TriO Jennifer Schaer. Nearly Naked Mile The Nearly Naked Mile is looking for volunteers and a coordinator from April 22 to 27. Volunteers will help by collecting, counting and sorting the donated clothing. The event is a way for students to have fun during a short race, wear costumes, and give back to the community by donating clothes. Clothing donations will be accepted in the Student Center. Prizes will be awarded to the best individual and group costumes, to those who donate the most clothes, and those with the fastest race time.

Xi Delta Zeta hosts Royalty for a Day Xi Delta Zeta is hosting a fundraiser for the Make-A-Wish Foundation Program. Children grades Kindergarten to fourth are welcome to come spend the day making crowns, playing games, eating snacks, and learning a special performance. At the end of the program, parents can come watch their children preform and see who is announced as royalty.

Scholastic Contest The CSC 2018 Scholastic Contest begins at 7:30 a.m., on Friday April 6.

CAB discusses upcoming Scholastic Day Loren Ritter Sports Editor CAB Treasurer Tierra Snyder, senior of Beatrice, reminded attendees that Scholastic Day is this Friday.

“There is going to be a ton of high schoolers here. Be safe, don’t do anything stupid. Don’t do anything I wouldn’t do ... which is nothing,” Snyder said.

Snyder opened discussion about CAB buying a Cricut for all of the clubs to share. Clubs would have to purchase supplies to use the Cricut, but the Cricut itself would be available for use for clubs. Where the Cricut would be housed was debated, due to raised concern that if the machine was checked out, it would be damaged. As well as the concern that if the Cricut was kept in the CAB office, a representative might not always be in there when it would be convenient for clubs to come in.

In another matter, the coffee shop is closing at the end of the semester. Due to the closure,

the library is trying to figure out what to do with the space. The library is considering moving the Media Lab which is now located in the basement, up to the main level, as well as adding in more office areas where the media lab is now.

“Not a lot of students know that we have a VR system or those chairs with the monitors you can move any which way. We thought this might be more of a way to kind of advertise what the college has to offer. When you go on tours, you don’t see that stuff, so it would be cool to see that stuff” Dawson Brunswick, sophomore of McCook, said.

Sign ups for the Spring Days club fair are still available 11-1pm every day this week in the Student Center. If clubs cannot make it during that time slot, they are to contact Johnathan Sayaloune, senior of Scottsbluff, or CAB Chair Kimberly Hernandez, junior of Scottsbluff, to sign up.

The last Free Movie Night of the semester is April 15. Free Bowling Night will also be Sunday, April 22.

Reception honoring four exhibitors in senior art show, ‘Fourfold,’ set for Friday Staff Reports A reception for the four senior art students exhibiting their work in the spring 2018 senior art show, “Fourfold,” is scheduled from 5-7 p.m. Friday in the Memorial Hall lobby, adjacent to the Main Gallery.

The show opened in the Main Gallery March 26 and runs through April 10.

This spring’s featured artists are Troi Arnold of Cozad; Kendra Baucom of Colorado Springs, Colorado; Taylor Juelfs of Potter; and Holly Real of Wright, Wyoming. The four are expected to graduate in May. “There is a large variety of work including, sculptures, prints, graphic designs, stain-glass pieces, and ceramics,

just to name a few,” said Trudy Denham, assistant professor of art.

Denham added that the four seniors worked together to organize, hang, label and light their artwork. The students were also required to create a show poster, publicity, artists’ statements, résumés, and individual portfolios to fulfill the requirements for ART 412 Senior Thesis, a required course for all art graduates.

‘Art for All’ exhibitors’ reception set for April 12, M-Hall, second floor Staff Reports

The art department is recognizing its non-art major exhibitors in the “Art for All” show with a reception from 3-4 p.m. Thursday, April 12, in Memorial Hall’s second floor hallway, adjacent to Gallery 239.

Open now through April 16 in Gallery 239, “Art for All” features work by students enrolled in several non-art major studio courses. Those courses fulfill the Essential Studies Program’s requirement No. 5, which enables students to practice one or more creative art forms, Trudy Denham, assistant professor of art, stated in an email.

“Each student has pushed the boundaries of their creative research and developed works of art that visually exemplify their answer to the class assignments,” Denham stated.

CSC invites high school students to annual Scholastic Day event Nalani Stewart News Editor The 2018 Scholastic Day event hosted by Chadron State College is set to begin at 7:30 a.m., Friday. Over 1,000 high school senior students from more than 40 schools in Nebraska, Wyoming, and South Dakota will come together on the campus to compete in academic tests in various disciplines.

“We have done the event for over 50 years,” Director of Market of Market Development Danielle Lecher said. “I think that it is an awesome way to showcase CSC, and so whether the intention was to be focused on recruitment or not, it probably was a little bit of a recruitment event just because it was an opportunity for perspective students to check CSC out, and kind of experience our classrooms and meet our faculty. The only thing that really changed this year is we just added a few more promotional items, changed up the communication, so that we are communicating not only with the schools, but also with the students through our admissions office.”

CSC students and clubs were invited to volunteer as guides to help students find test rooms and buildings. Clubs could also help by moderating tests and the competition.

“Anytime we have students on our campus, we need to take advance of that opportunity to our fullest, because obviously that could be a decision factor as to whether they

end up attending here or not. And missing that opportunity would be a very sad thing.

We want to make sure that if they are here, that we put our best face forward, and they have a great experience because we have heard that students have chosen to come to Chadron State College because they attended Scholastic Day,” Lecher said.

If the winner is a senior who will be attending CSC in Fall 2018 and wins first place in an exam, they will receive a tuition waiver for the Fall 2018 and Spring 2019 semesters. Winners of each test will receive a CSC sweatshirt. Those who place top three receive medals. Those who finish top 25 percent in each test will receive a certificate. The top school in each division receives a plaque. All students registered for the event will receive a CSC T-Shirt. Results can be viewed online after the competition.

“We did add a few more components so that it would feel a little bit more CSC promotional, but in terms of the actual event structure, and the testing, it is going to look very much the same as it has for the last almost 60 years now,” Lecher said.

A faculty and staff concert will be held at 11:30 a.m. in the Memorial Hall Auditorium for students after their competition as well as an Open Mic from 11:30 a.m. -12:30 p.m. in the Student Center Ballroom. Other events include a Blood Splatter Demonstration, Brain Games, Club and Department Fair, Photo Booth and yard games.

Put “Me” first: the importance of person-first language Lydia Privett Opinion Editor Did you know that the largest minority group in the United States is people with disabilities? And if you think about it, it’s the most inclusive group. No matter your age, gender, sexuality, or ethnicity, you can be a member.

Person-first language is an important thing to consider when talking to or about someone with a disability. It’s a good thing to be aware of, and unfortunately isn’t a widely known type of language to use.

I know the majority of the time that I try to correct my friends or mention it in conversation, it’s rare for someone to know what I am referring to, and that’s something I’d like to change.

What is person-first language?

Person-first language is a way of speaking about typically people with disabilities to avoid subconscious dehumanization.

It’s a way of describing the person first and their diagnosis second, in a way describing what the person has, not what the person is.

A couple examples would be “She has autism” rather than “She’s autistic” or “He uses a wheelchair” instead of “He’s wheelchair bound.”

This doesn’t just apply to those with disabilities, however. You can utilize this language will all types of people you will encounter in your life, such as people that have a disease, or even people who are homeless.

It’s like referring to someone who “has alcoholism” rather than “a drunk.” Something as simple as someone’s appearance, such as “the black person” versus “the person with dark skin.”

It can be as simple as that to make small changes in your everyday language.

While it can hold more weight in regards to those with disabilities, it’s a good thing to be conscious of in your everyday life.

It’s more than just a language, it goes deeper into our attitudes towards others and how those attitudes reflect into our actions.

Energy can be found in healthy ways

On the

Bright Side Rachel Mitchell Columnist This last weekend I got the chance to watch a documentary on Netflix was incredibly informational. “Take Your Pills” is a documentary that follows students, a former NFL athlete, an artist, a computer programmer and everyone in between who currently take or used to take pills, like Adderall. In the documentary it followed some who were prescribed the pill and some who weren’t prescribed it.

For those who aren’t prescribed it they use it as a “Study Drug”. They all commented on how it made them focus, become more productive, and have more motivation.

While I was watching it, I became more aware of how many college students were using pills to get

an extra energy boost . According to Iowa State Daily “Full-time college students between ages of 18-22, were found to be twice as likely to abuse Adderall than those of the same age and not in college.”

I realized that people want an immediate energy boost to fix their problems. Students may not be willing to go the extra mile to get energy naturally.

There are incredibly damaging effects to take drugs like Adderall if they aren’t prescribed to you. Similar to cardiovascular problems, addiction and psychotic episodes, people can ultimately become dependent on these type of drugs.

I want to provide you with some natural ways to boost your energy.

Even if you aren’t taking a study drug this might be useful for you to naturally boost your energy.

Firstly, you can adjust what you are consuming. One really easy step is to increase your water intake and stay hydrated. You can also try vegetable juice or green tea.

Changing a cup of coffee or an energy drink a day to one of these options is optimal for your body. They have wonderful benefits besides giving you energy.

Another consumption change you

can make is cutting out some carbs and getting enough vitamin B 12. Even though breads and pasta give you a quick burst of energy, you end up having a sugar crash later.

One other tip to give yourself a natural energy boost is to exercise. I am positive I’ve used exercise as a way of bettering your life in my other columns. It is a really wonderful tool that is underutilized.

Regular exercise and engaging in physical activity sends oxygen and nutrients to your body’s cells, helping your heart and lungs work more efficiently and boosting energy levels.

I hope that there is something in this article that you can find useful. As the end of the semester is getting closer having new and natural ways to get energy might be helpful.

Limiting social media helps our quality of life Devin Fulton Reporter Being young adults, a lot of people would argue that we are in the prime of our lives. Yet here we are relying on social media for our entertainment. Social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter didn’t seem to be a major issue when they were initially coming out.

However, this was also at a time when these sites were limited to our computers, so we only checked our social media a select few times a day.

Fast forward to 2018, everyone has a smart-phone with apps like Facebook and Instagram. Now it seems that no one can stay off their phone, as if they have an

addiction to their device.

No one can do anything without publishing their experience. On a constant basis we are reminded of everyone’s daily lives. The problem here is that we are no longer focused on the things right in front of us.

Almost everywhere you go, people are glued to their phones, even in a social public setting. There are lots of people around us who truly care, but we are worried about people’s opinions on a device.

In a day and age where we seem so disconnected with everybody and ourselves, we could look at social media as a primary factor. On sites like Twitter or Instagram, we appear as our ideal selves because we can hide behind a screen.

Unfortunately, few people in our daily lives truly want to know about how our day was or what we did.

All this does is create a dissatisfaction with who we are compared to who we think we are on social media. It is important that we live that was fully lived, not a life that was published.

To limit daily usage of social media would be extraordinary for anyone willing to try. Instead of improving yourself for the sake of public perception, why not do it for yourself?

You can still get ahold of family members, in fact you may get to engage in real conversations with them.

We all need a break from social media, so consider connecting back with ourselves and the people around us.

Prevention goes far beyond gun reform Katelyn Lambert Lifestyles Editor I was sitting in class on Valentine’s Day this year when my phone buzzed.

“Active shooter situation at Florida High School.”

Alert after alert began to come in, giving updates on casualties and injuries.

This was supposed to be a day of love and appreciation for others, be it friends, family or a significant other.

Why is this happening? What drives someone to do this?

When school shootings are further investigated, the shooter is, more often than not, driven to commit this crime due to poor treatment from their peers.

In simpler terms, the shooter was bullied by their classmates.

Take a look at Columbine, for example.

When you listen to students who attended Columbine High School at the time of the shooting recount what they knew about their classmates before the attack, the two shooters weren’t the popular kids. They were the outcasts, the “weirdos.” (I refrain from using their names to give them no more publicity for the crime they committed than they already have received. The victims should be the ones remembered, not the criminals.)

Additionally, the pair also suffered from mental health issues.

Most recently, Zachary Cruz, the younger brother of the Parkland shooter, told investigators he regrets bullying his brother and feels as if he could have prevented the shooting. The Parkland shooter also suffered from mental health.

19 years have passed between those two shootings.

Scattered in between are shootings like Sandy Hook in 2012, the Aurora Theatre shooting in 2012 and the Charleston church shooting in 2015.

Again, the criminals in these attacks all showed signs of mental illness.

This isn’t mere coincidence. This is a pattern.

A study of 185 mass shootings was performed by criminologist Grant Duwe. Over half of all mass shootings (four or more murders at a public location) from 1900 to 2017 were committed by those with mental illness of some capacity.

Shouldn’t this be what covers headlines, not the model of gun the shooter used?

A trend that swept social media newsfeeds across the board was that of the National School Walkout exactly one month after the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.

I have immense respect for students that participated in the National School Walkout on March 14. The 17 minutes of silence – one for each victim – was both tasteful and impactful.

It is our duty to recognize the horrors of that day and move forward with the motivation to change. But, that isn’t where the protests should stop. Protests shouldn’t be solely limited to gun reform or heightened gun control.

The protests should also put an emphasis on mental health, getting our elected officials to put in place more programs and resources for those dealing with mental health issues.

While waiting for change from Capitol Hill, students walking back in the doors of

their school should check up on each other and take care of one another.

Why tear one another down when it is just as easy to build each other up? We have all heard the saying, “If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.”

As corny as the saying may sound, I think our parents were onto something when we were told that when we were six years old. It takes so much more effort to be cruel and cut someone down because they are different than accept them for who they are. Isn’t diversity exactly what our generation preaches about being more accepting of?

So, then, why don’t we also consider diversity when it comes to personalities and involvement in activities?

Instead of being cruel, flip the narrative.

Don’t criticize someone for wearing an outfit that you would never wear. Rather, find a piece of the outfit you like and compliment the person on that fashion choice.

In class, instead of laughing when the quiet kid in the class stutters during speech, give them a reassuring nod and listen to what they have to say.

Pay others the respect you wish paid to you. At the end of the day, we are all on the same playing field. Some of us may be dealt different cards throughout life. But, we all enter and leave this world in the same way.

Also, be attentive to the signs of someone who may be struggling with depression, anxiety, another mental illness or even struggling in general.

If you see someone alone at lunch, introduce yourself and see if you can sit with them. Sure, maybe they prefer to eat alone or need to eat quickly to get to class.

But, you stopping to sit with them may actually turn their day around and help alleviate pain they have been battling due to underlying issues in their own life. Reaching out a helping hand may be the first sign of help the person has received. Everyone

has separate lives with our own problems.

Why go out of your way to make someone feel poorly when you can instead see what you can do to help?

If you overhear someone speaking of being violent – either to themselves or to others – or see posts that are threatening or violent, speak up. Tell someone as soon as you see a red flag, because notifying someone with the authority to uncover more information may be what stops another attack in the future.

The shooter on February 14 is a murderer, plain and simple. Could this shooting have been prevented? It depends on who you ask.

Some say he would have found a way to obtain the weapon, regardless of if it was illegal or not. Others believe he should have never had the gun in the first place.

Sadly, it is too late to know for sure.

But, it isn’t too late for us to take a step back, reflect upon ourselves and see if we are the bully.

What is on us now is checking up on one another and supporting each other as human beings. We are all on this planet together, taking each day as it comes and trying to get by.

Don’t tear one another down. Don’t belittle someone because they are different.

Don’t exclude someone to try and “stick to the status quo.”

Foster diversity. Foster creativity. Foster change. And foster our human race, because we have only got one another in this thing called life.

We have a chance to save lives. Speak up, protect each other and strive to accept others for their differences.

If you need help, seek it out. There is nothing wrong in asking for help.

If you know someone that needs help, encourage them to find help and be a source of support for that person.

Let’s set an example for the rest of the world to follow.

Kyle Dietsche, (4) senior of Sheridan, Wyoming, runs in an event this weekend during the Spank Blasing Meet in Pueblo, Colorado.

The Chadron State track and field team won four individual titles at the Spank Blasing Meet hosted by Colorado State University Pueblo. The meet provided CSC with the opportunity to compete against several RMAC opponents.

The Eagle men were led by Javan Lanier, sophomore of Aurora, Colorado. Lanier won the 100-meter dash in 11.46 seconds. Lanier also placed second in the long jump at 22 feet, 11 ¾ inches.

In the running events, CSC had a couple of third place performances that supplemented Lanier’s victory in the 100-meter dash. Levi Avila, junior of Mitchell, placed third in the

5000-meter run with a time of 15:59.94 and Marcus Ruhrer, freshman of Campe Verde, Arizona took third in 400-meter hurdles in 58.9 seconds.

Isaac Grimes, freshman of Rancho Verde, California won the event with a leap of 25 feet, 1 ¼ inches. The jump provided Grimes with the third best mark of the season in NCAA Division II. The Eagle men showed their strength in the field events in Pueblo with six athletes finishing in the top three of an event. Jessie Bleidt, senior of Lewellen turned in a winning performance in the hammer throw with a toss of 183 feet, 6 inches. Tyler Koke, junior of Minatare, won the triple jump at 43 feet, 3 ¾ inches. On the women’s side, the Eagles were led by the throwers. Ashton Hallsted, sophomore of Casper, Wyoming placed second in the discus and third in the hammer throw. Ashlyn Hanson, senior of Seward placed second in the javelin with a throw of 123 feet, 9 inches.

On the track, the Eagle women had strong runs in the steeplechase and the 4x400 meter relay. Alyse Henry, sophomore of Rock Springs, Wyoming placed third in the 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11:26.36. The CSC 4x400 relay team placed fourth with a time of 4:07.75.

The Eagle track and field teams will be back in action this weekend in Canyon, Texas. The teams will compete at the West Texas A&M Classic and Multi.

Eagle Softball drops two vs.

Colorado Christian University Devin Fulton Reporter Due to snowy conditions, one Thursday and one Friday afternoon game was canceled against the Colorado Christian Cougars, who are ranked second in the RMAC. On Saturday, the weather was good enough to be played and the Cougars came away with two wins against the Eagles.

In the first game, the Eagles fell to the Cougars by a score of 7-0. Despite the loss, Jessica Jarecki, (22), sophomore pitcher from Littleton, Colorado, pitched six strikeouts over four innings, but was also charged with the loss.

In the second and fifth innings, the Cougars were able to score three runs.

They would score one final run in the seventh inning. This impressive performance was too much for the Eagles

and their slow-starting offense to handle.

During the second game of the afternoon, the Eagles were able to keep the game close, but lost 3-6.

After a strong sixth inning finish, the Eagles were able to tie the game 3-3. However, a threerun finale by the Cougars in the seventh inning proved to be too much for the Eagles to overcome.

Allie Mason, sophomore of Loveland, Colorado and Bailynn Meek, freshman of Orangeville, California, both batted home a run in the sixth inning.

After the weekend, the Eagles currently have a conference record of 9-12 and 11-20 overall while sitting at the eighth spot in the RMAC. The Cougars have a conference record of 20-1 and 29-3, which is good enough for the second overall spot in the RMAC. The Eagles will travel to take on MSU Denver in a matchup this coming weekend. MSU Denver has a conference record of 14-10, sitting in the fourth spot of the RMAC.

78 CSC football players prepare through spring training Torri Brumbaugh Managing Editor The CSC football team has begun spring training to prepare for the Spring Game, on April 21, and the upcoming 2018-2019 season.

“Ultimately what we want to do is focus on getting better, whether it is in the weight room, on the field, or even getting better in our meetings,” Head Coach Jay Long said.

Long said the focus of spring training is to “fine tune” the older players and see which younger players are going to compete and “take those next steps.”

After the 2017-2018 season, the CSC football team lost four offensive players, which included two starters, and 11 defensive players. Spring training and the Spring Game will prove who will help fill those holes.

The team currently has 86 players, with 78 going through spring training, and a promising group of incoming freshmen.

“Defensively we have some guys that need to come and step up, and that’s one thing that spring training does.

You’re allowed to see the next man up,” Long said.

Throughout the 15 spring practices, which started March 26, the players have set goals in line with Long’s.

“Our offense picked up right where we left off. We are still improving every day and we expect to be one of the top offenses in the conference again,” offensive lineman Travis Romsa, 22, senior of Burns, Wyoming, said. “Spring ball is where you learn a lot and improve the most. We have a lot of good young players on both sides of the ball that will make an impact on the field.”

Romsa said their goal as an offense is to be perfect on 88 percent of their plays, which means no turnovers, catch passes, and at least four yards per rush.

With young, talented players, the Eagles have confidence in filling the gaps the graduating seniors left.

Defensive lineman Kyle Temple, 22, senior of Norfolk, said, “With a defense that is going to be young, communication is going to be a key part of spring and heading into next season….We have a ton of talent and guys willing to work hard and with a productive spring, I’m confident that our defense will be as good, if not better, than we were a year ago.”

Both Temple and Romsa have set goals to be leaders on the team, while both setting a standard of excellence and guiding their younger teammates.

The team’s spring training will culminate with the Spring Game, Saturday, April 21, where the offense will scrimmage against the defense. The game will be held at the practice field due to the construction of the new stadi-

No matter who wins the Spring Game, Long said he is excited to see his team grow in the upcoming weeks and compete.

Long said, “I’m just excited to coach these guys. We have a team that I really like being around…. Right now we have guys that, I think, really love Chadron State and that I am very excited to coach.”

EagleLeaders Eli Garza Jr. keeps busy with work, music and academics as a first-generation college student

As another wave of graduates comes and goes, non-traditional students become more prominent in the student population of Chadron State College. However, these non-traditional students make just as much of an impact on campus as their traditional peers, and Eli Garza Jr. is no exception.

Eli Garza Jr., 23, senior of Mission, Texas, is a graduate of Scottsbluff High School. Prior to his high school career at SHS, Garza attended school in Texas.

After credits didn’t transfer for his freshman year from his high school in Texas, Garza had to repeat ninth grade. He graduated from SHS in 2014 at the age of 19.

Immediately following high school graduation, Garza worked two jobs instead of enrolling in college.

“As soon as I graduated it was, like, alright, I need to start working, because that’s who I was,” Garza said.

One of his jobs, tutoring Japanese students in conversational English, helped Garza realize his passion for teaching English.

“The only way it seemed possible [to further this career in education] was through college,” Garza said.

However, Garza wasn’t sure of his likelihood of getting into college after a poor academic career. Between expulsion from two schools in Texas, being a first-generation college student and maintaining a low GPA, “College was never really in the books for me,” Garza said.

But, Garza applied to CSC and enrolled in classes the spring semester of 2015, despite being “very scared” coming to college.

Now, Garza is nearing the end of his college career, with only this semester and a few summer classes remaining.

Garza will be graduating with a degree in

music. His latest project has been an EP he plans to release this summer.

This collection of four songs produced and performed by Garza is not his first venture into the music world.

Currently, he has three singles on both iTunes and Spotify.

International Luncheon showcases Nigerian culture Kylee Odenbach Reporter The Chadron State College International Office hosted their monthly International Luncheon featuring Princess Uba from Nigeria, last Thursday, in the Scottsbluff Room of the Student Center. The event went from noon until 1 p.m. Community members, CSC employees and CSC students attended the event.

“It’s good to diversify yourself,” Shawna Turner, 18, freshman of Hill City, South Dakota, said.

About 40 people in total attended the event.

The event featured Uba talking about the culture of Nigeria while attendees ate a cultural dish, jollof rice, of Nigeria.

“We hope that today people learn more about Nigeria

and our students here,” Angie Camerlinck, Project Coordinator of the International Office, said.

Uba, 18, is a junior at CSC and is majoring in chemistry.

“I love the events that the college hosts and the people here,” Uba said.

Uba gave a PowerPoint presentation on Nigeria, its culture and some of her personal information. She provided information on her family, the educational system in Nigeria, tourist attractions, popular foods and some fun facts about Nigeria.

The Nigerian Government passed the Universal Basic Education Act in 2004 and is extending education opportunities to children throughout the country. Illiteracy is an issue Nigeria has struggled with, but the government is currently fighting it.

When it comes to popular dishes in Nigeria, Suya and Tuwo Shinkafa are well known. Suya is a spicy meat skew-

“We have the longest canopy walk in Africa in Nigeria.

It’s fun and scary at the same time,” Uba said.

A canopy walk is a bridge in a forest among many trees.

“Nigeria is hugely known for their tourist attractions,” Uba said.

“We appreciate everyone who has supported the students,” Camerlinck said.

The next International Luncheon will be April 26 from noon until 1 p.m. in the Scottsbluff Room of the Student Center.

Adoum Mbang of Cameroon will present information about the culture of his home country.

CSC students can use their meal plans, CSC employees can attend for $5.70 and community members can attend for $7.60.

That was the solution to Plainswalkers Society’s and RLA’s live-action Clue Night, last Thursday, in The Hub. “As Plainswalkers Society, we wanted to expand more than just doing our basic game nights and we wanted to be open more and grow a better relationship with RLA,” Ashley Ward, 21, senior of Grand Island, said. “We thought ‘Clue’ would be awesome because it’s a board game that a lot of people have played.

The program began at 7 p.m. Students were invited to come eat a Subway sandwich and get comfortable until the game officially started at 7:30 p.m.

The game began with an introduction from the host and “mansion owner.” Members of the Plainswalkers Society then introduced themselves to the audience as the main characters of “Clue:” Colonel Mustard, Miss Scarlet, Mr. Green, Mrs. Peacock, Mrs. White and Professor Plum.

“All of a sudden, the lights will flip off and a murder will happen,” Makenzy Petty, 20, junior of Chadron, said.

After the lights turned back on, the mansion owner was

found dead. Students, divided into teams, then went off to find out which character committed the murder, where the murder happened and what weapon they used.

Ward, Petty and RA Mildred Avitia, 19, freshman of Scottsbluff, began planning Clue Night over a month and a half ago.

The event was deemed successful with 37 attendees, as they initially planned for 25-30 in attendance.

The Plainswalkers Society plays games every Thursday at 7 p.m. They play card games, party games like ‘Clue’ and ‘nerdy’ games like ‘Qatar,’” said Ward. She said everyone is welcome to come play games.

New ‘Jumanji’ film puts modern twist on 90s classic Torri Brumbaugh Managing Editor As a child, I grew up watching the 1995 movie “Jumanji.” Although I have seen it countless times, it still makes my heart race as a fictional jungle and the real world start to merge.

When I learned that a remake of “Jumanji” was coming out, I was very excited. That excitement only grew when I learned who the actors in the movie were going to be: Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Nick Jonas, Jack Black, Kevin Hart and Karen Gillan.

In “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle,” the classic Jumanji game transforms into a video game after realizing that board games are “outdated.” The characters are sent into the game and turn into their chosen “players.”

The concept is slightly different. However, for those who loved the thrill of the first “Jumanji,” love the actors and need a good laugh, this reboot is the perfect movie for you.

There are four main characters in this movie that

perpetuate the basic high school stereotypes.

Spencer portrays the awkward “nerd,” while his former best friend “Fridge” is a high school football star. The two female leads are Bethany, the popular, pretty girl, and Martha, the brainiac.

While in detention, the group opts to play an old video game they find instead of doing their assigned work.

After they choose their characters in the video game, they are transported into the game of Jumanji and become the player they chose. Each character they encompass has a special skill set and a weakness.

While I love the classic “Jumanji” plot, this movie was not just a remake. The 2017 “Jumanji” brought a new humor to the film that was not in the previous one. A majority of the humor was based on the fact that the students turned into characters that did not seem to match their stereotype.

Spencer transformed into Dr. Smolder Bravestone, played by “The Rock.” The “nerd” who is scared of most human interactions now has to encompass the courageous leader of the group.

Bethany turns into Professor Shelly Oberon, played by Black. Not only does she have to now cope with being a boy, she also trades her “hot” body for the body of an overweight, middle-aged man.

“Fridge,” who is accustomed to being a large and powerful football player, turns into Bravestone’s small sidekick Moose Finbar, played by Hart.

Martha, who sees no point in beauty or physical activity because it won’t get her into a good college, transforms into Ruby Roundhouse, played by Gillan, who uses her good looks and dance-fighting ability to her advantage.

The group must navigate new bodies and skills all while working together to save the land of Jumanji from the villain Van Pelt, played by Bobby Cannavale.

While it may just seem like a game, each player is given three lives. After they are out of lives, they actually die and will never return home.

“Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” may not be critically acclaimed, but the humor and playful storyline provides a great escape for audiences who want to be entertained.
