Focus on retention spawns changes to freshmen ‘Move-in’ Torri Brumbaugh Co-Editor CSC renames New Student Orientation as “Move-In” to ease the transition for new students and help with retention.

After renaming the spring and early summer “Signing Days” to “New Eagle Registration and Orientation,” the NSO committee renamed the fall events to “better clarify the intention of each event and the importance,” said Danielle Lecher, director of market development and student services.

Unlike previous years, move-in on Thursday will be solely designated to its title: moving in.

“We really backed off some of our programming in the past because it became very clear to us that students, and their parents, have one thing on their mind and that is usually making sure they have a trash can, maybe ramen noodles and making sure that the dorm room is set,” Lecher said. “Trying to program and create competition with that is hard.”

Consequently, Friday will be the “heavy” information day.

Parents and students will be separated into information sessions specifically tailored to each group’s needs.

With understanding billing and financial aid, finalizing schedules, and learning cam-

pus resources as a focus during New Eagle Registration and Orientation, new students will delve into what will be expected of them in and out of the classroom. They will also learn the roles of the START team and their academic advisers.

New Eagle Registration is part of the onboarding phase of CSC’s new Strategic Enrollment Management Plan unveiled early this term. Revamping move-in and creating connections with students’ advisers and other faculty from the initial meeting on campus is a part of the plan to retain students.

“The more times we can connect a student with CSC early on in the process, the more likely they are to actually show up in

August….” Lecher said. “I noticed at the All-Campus meeting, the students were basically saying that the first time they realized their adviser was a real person was the reason they decided to stay in that program and at CSC. So if they can have that “ah-ha” moment with somebody, then they are more likely to graduate.”

The number of those attending MoveIn are “comparative to last year’s numbers” but not clearly defined according to Lecher.

After pushing the move-in time back from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. and eliminating programing, she is unsure of how busy move-in day will compare to previous years, even with similar numbers.

CPD doesn’t want to boot you, but they will Torri Brumbaugh Co-Editor Beginning Saturday, those who park in front of the Chadron Aquatic Center may get the “boot” from Chadron Police.

In a Monday press release, CPD will become more strict about enforcing parking regulations “along East 10th Street near the Chadron Aquatic Center.”

The press release states that the Chadron City Council approved no parking on East 10th Street between 2-5 a.m. in that area. The “No Parking” ordinance has been regularly enforced, but the CPD is having a hard time issuing citations to the owners or drivers of the vehicles. Due to these difficulties, the CPD will turn to immobilizing vehicles using a “boot.”

The “boot,” or wheel lock, will be placed on illegally parked vehicles, along with a sticker that informs the owner how to have the boot removed. If the vehicle is not moved in less than 48 hours, it will be towed and the owner

will still be issued a citation. In addition, they will be liable for the towing bill.

The warning sticker states that CPD is not responsible for any damage caused by the boot if a driver of the vehicle attempts to move the vehicle. The owner or driver is responsible for the damage caused to the “boot.”

The press release states that any “tampering with or attempting to remove the boot by your own means may subject the individual to further criminal sanctions.”

Tips for success as incoming freshmen Welcome freshmen to Chadron State College! Here you will spend the next four years of your life learning, making new friends, and experiencing new things. There are so many new ideas and adventures that will be thrown your way, but here’s some advice to help you find success this year.

General Colin Powell said, “There is no secret to success. It is the result of preparation, hard work, and learning from failure.”

For many of you, this is your first time living away from home. That can be a difficult step to take. Living away from home can be a struggle for some and even a road block in some college careers. Whether you’ve traveled hundreds of miles or just a few to get here, it will still be hard.

It’s okay to miss your parents and get homesick, but don’t let it keep you from enjoying your college experience.

Calling your parents is not a bad thing, just ensure you are still having a great college experience.

Navigating relationships, social lives and being away from home can be rough, but one of the biggest challenges

Apparently the concert will create heavy traffic that buses will get stuck in. The concert itself should be enough for a holiday.

College classes are a lot different than high school classes. There isn’t someone to check up on you and make sure that you’ve done your homework or even make you go to class in the morning.

Even if you went to high school every morning at 8 a.m., making yourself get up for those early morning class after staying out all night will still be difficult. All you want to do is sleep and your mom isn’t there to make you get up and go to class. You could just skip class and sleep in. Make yourself get up and go to class or find a friend to make you get up to go to class.

Professors will tell you how important attendance is the first week of classes and it is. You cannot learn the content if you are not in class. Skipping class will only make you fall behind which can lead to doing poorly on quizzes, tests and the overall class. In most of your classes, your professors will give you points simply for showing up.

Participation is another important aspect of college. You can just show up

When you engage in discussion with other students and the professor, you not only enhance your own learning, but you can help with other students learning and give everyone a better learning experience.

Chadron State College is a great school. It may seem small now, but that’s one of the best things about it.

A small student population gives you a more personal learning experience. You become close with the people in your major because you have the same people in your classes all four years. You also become close with your professors because you have the same professors for many classes in your major. They can be a huge resource for you that you need to use, whether that be for advice on life during college, after college or even if you just need a friend to talk to.

Chadron is a great town and a great place to spend the next four years of your life. CSC may be small, but that’s what makes it more like a family.

Jeers to the man who crossed a rain into an unauthorized area to spank a hippopotamus at the Los Angeles Zoo. Police are currently investigating the trespassing. Not cool, dude.

Jeers to city of Paris for combating a public urination problem with more public urination. The new public urinals are discreet with a bright red color and a large white sign. They also have a cartoon of a man peeing on the side, just in case anyone may confuse them with a mailbox.

ince winning a state championship in October of last year and signing to continue her golf career at Chadron State College that November, Alpine Hickstein, freshmen of Chadron, will continue her golf career and enter her freshman year at CSC as one of the highest profile golfers the college has signed.

The Chadron native is a four-time district champion and completed her high school career last fall achieving her goal of becoming a state champion after beating the field by more than 20 strokes. Her two-day performance at the State Championship tied an all-class Nebraska record, and her second day score of 70 was one of only five to have ever been recorded and second only to Danielle Lemek’s 67 in 2011.

“We’re obviously extremely excited to have Alpine join us,” CSC Head Golf Coach John Ritzen said. “We think we have a very good recruiting class to add to what Alpine brings.”

One of those things the former Chadron high school golfer brings is surety.

“We know for sure what we’re getting with Alpine because we see her more than the other girls,” Ritzen said. “We see her out on the course practicing. We know the dedication and work ethic that she’s going to put forth and that’s something that’s very comforting.”

Ritzen, who’s class of four recruits will join three returning golfers, knows that at least two of his top five golfers in the coming season will be beginning college golfers.

“We have four freshman coming in and three returners,” Ritzen said. “It’s kind of the same situation as last year. We’re going to have a lot of young girls competing right away and making that jump to our top-five girls.”

This year however, he said, the team will have a lot more competition for those spots.

Coach Ritzen admits you never know what to expect with a young team, but he hopes Hickstein, and the others, will contribute right away.

For her part, Hickstein, who has spent the summer playing in multiple junior tournaments, has been partaking in her prescribed workout and practice regimen.

“All summer long we’ve had a workout schedule and they’ve given us drills we have to do at least twice a week,” she said. “So far they’ve been really good for me and I’ve talked to a couple of the other girls from Colorado. [T]hey’ve said they really like them and that they’re really working out for them and improving their game too.”

Hickstein says she’s kept in contact with incoming freshman teammates Kayla Elder, of Fort Collins, Colorado, Anna Branscome, of Lakewood, Colorado, and Abby White, of Simcoe, Ontario, Canada.

“We kind of did it ourselves,” Hickstein said of the rookie girls contacting one another, “we became friends on Instagram and started [direct messaging] each other. Now we all just kind of talk.”

For all the advantage she gains by having close access to her new coach, Hickstein says she’s not sure what to expect out of her transition to the college level, but says that she’s not been nervous. Her goal for the season is to average a round score of 77.

“I expect my scores to be a little higher,” Hickstein said, noting that at the college level she’ll shoot from the white tees instead of the red shot from in high school, “but I do have a long ball, so I’m expecting to still play well.”

She’s no stranger to the extra distance, however, as she has played from the white tees at times over the last two years.

Four Eagles named to preseason all-conference picks CSC Sports information COLORADO SPRINGS -- Chadron State College football players Colt Foster, Jake Geil, Zack Kozlik, and Travis Romsa were among the Preseason All-Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference selections on Monday when the league’s football preseason release was announced at rmacsports.org.

Foster’s sophomore season saw him earn Second Team AllRMAC honors and a Don Hansen All-Super Region 4 Third Team nod after he totaled 561 receiving yards and four touchdowns. He is the top returning receiver among the conference’s tight ends, and he comes back as No. 2 in the South Central

Region as a junior.

Senior punter Zack Kozlik was tabbed on Thursday as the RMAC Preseason Special Teams Player of the Year. In his junior season, he established a punting average that, if maintained, will go down as the CSC career record for yards per punt. He was a 2017 Second Team All-RMAC selection.

Geil and Romsa return a total of 55 career starts on the offensive line. Geil, in his fourth year as starter, split time between guard and center in 2015 and 2016, but he anchored the line at center all season in 2017. Romsa is a returning All-RMAC First Team member who has two years as a starter, playing left tackle in 2017 and earning Offensive Team MVP in 2016 as a sophomore, at right tackle. The pair led a unit which led the RMAC

in fewest sacks allowed in 2017, giving up only 12 all season.

“It’s nice for members of Chadron to be recognized in preseason voting,” Romsa said, “however, we are only focused about how we perform as a team during the season.”

Preseason All-RMAC selections were made by a vote of the league’s 11 coaches, with each coach abstaining from voting his own players in.

The Preseason Coaches’ Poll lists CSU-Pueblo as the projected champion with eight first-place votes. Colorado Mesa and Colorado School of Mines also received first-place votes, finishing second and third in the poll, respectively. Chadron State was slotted fifth, behind Dixie State, who joins the conference as a full member in all sports for 2018-19.

Another common challenge in making the leap from high school to college golf is the fact that players tend to have an entire year of courses they’re unfamiliar with, but higher level high school golfers like Hickstein and the other girls in her recruiting class have all played junior tournaments in the summer that regularly take them to new courses.

“All of our girls coming in, it seems like the majority of them played in some kind of junior tour and played a lot of summer tournaments,” Ritzen said. “With Alpine, we know what we’re getting, but those other girls also did the same work tournament wise.”

Putting in work is something Hickstein is no stranger to. She’s long been known as someone who wants to be on the course on

a daily basis and has no qualms practicing a drill over and over to perfection.

“If [Hickstein] struggles with something in a tournament that’s going to be the first thing she’s going to start working on in practice,” Ritzen said. “She knows her game, which is a benefit. She knows areas she’s strong in and plays to those.”

Coach Ritzen says he hopes the influx of young talent helps the team meet his goal of improving on last year’s performance and finishing higher in the conference, but says that for the girls it’s going to be one step at a time, handling their transition to longer courses and figuring out their game at college level courses.

Hickstein, who’ll study busi-

ness education while at CSC, is eager to begin her college career, but has been happy to have a break in competitive golf between summer tournaments.

“I got a two or three week break between women’s match play and school,” Hickstein said.

“It’s been nice just to be able to do drills and not be traveling across the state; to have some good food in me instead of fast food all the time.”

With all of her success as a junior golfer, Hickstein could have continued her career at any of a number of schools, but staying in Chadron was an easy decision.

“It’s so welcoming,” she said.

“Everyone is so supportive and open to working with you whether you’re an athlete or not. I know I can do well here.”

Volleyball team earns academic honors CSC Sports information

The Chadron State College volleyball team was listed among the recipients of the American Volleyball Coaches’ Association Team Academic Award for the 2017-18 academic year.

The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale.

CSC is receiving its sixth Team Academic Award from the organization in only the past seven seasons, a feat which only 40 schools in NCAA Division II, and one other within the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, have matched. The Eagles volleyball program has earned nine total, dating back to 2003.

This year, Team Academic Awards went to 129 volleyball programs in NCAA Division II, including the national champion, Concordia University-St. Paul.
