Officials: Rewards app to spark student interest Torri Brumbaugh Co-Editor CSC launched new rewards app Thursday designed to help maintain student engagement on campus after a busy Week of Welcome, Campus Activities Director Megan Northrup said.

The CSC Rewards app, otherwise known as SuperFanU, allows students to create their own user profile and compete against one another to earn a spot on the CSC Rewards leaderboard.

Each event will have a geotag and when students check in at an event they earn points.

Those on the leaderboard and who gain enough points become eligible to win prizes.

“It’s to ensure that the hype from that first week carries on,” Northrup said. “I don’t think we lost students, but what we were hearing

from students last year is that there was nothing going on and nothing to do, but they just weren’t aware of it.”

CSC had a guidebook in the past, but Northrup said she thinks that with staff changes and turnover it wasn’t updated and got lost.

Along with sparking incentive, the app is intended to trigger interaction between those hosting events and students attending them.

Another of the app’s features is Fan Polls, where students earn extra points for answering trivia questions or participating in a poll.

Students can also participate in the “fan cam” while at events. This feature is like Snapchat and Instagram combined, Northrup said, as it lets students take photos and write on them or put on filters. The pictures are then uploaded to the app and available for all other users to see and like the photo. The more likes on a photo, the higher it will appear in the

‘Family Style’ exhibit set for Memorial Hall

Chadron Community Chorus is opening its doors to new members, 7 p.m., today in Memorial Hall, Room 126. All students and community members in Chadron are invited to join the chorus for the first rehearsal of the year. The Chadron Community Chorus is a staple of the Chadron State College music department and will be conducted this year by Joel Schreuder. Rehearsals take place every Thursday.

Showcasing and recruiting.

Those were the two overriding themes of CSC’s annual “Uptown on Campus,” Wednesday in the Student Center Sandhills room.

Organized by CSC Activities Coordinator, Megan Northrup, the event saw 34 regional business touting their companies and recruiting students.

Northrup said the event enables local businesses to showcase their businesses and provide new and returning students an idea of the variety of businesses in the area, which among others included boutiques, coffee shops and volunteer opportunities .

While most of the businesses were from Chadron several came from the region, including Alliance.

Among the businesses were Verizon Wireless, Lighthouse Tattoo and Piercing, North Western Community Action and Double Q Country.

Think F1rst: know your five freedoms In 2018, it seems difficult to find a balance between being over sensitive to the feelings of every person around you, while also exercising your First Amendment rights.

The First Amendment has been shoved aside to shield people from content they disagree with and find offensive. It has been attacked by the government, who seeks to limit the press.

Journalists are under attack. Open debate is looked down on, especially on college campuses. And most of all, students aren’t aware of their rights or the importance of the First Amendment.

“In the past few years, polls began to show that Americans lacked even a basic knowledge of the First Amendment, particularly in articulating the five freedoms that it guarantees. Not the interpretation of, but the actual knowledge of freedoms that Americans exercise nearly every day,” Craig Eckert, Media of Nebraska Board member, said. “In August of last year, a civics survey taken by the Annenberg Public policy Center showed nearly 4 in 10 students couldn’t name even one of the five freedoms guaranteed by the

First Amendment.”

The survey results should be shocking to all of us. They mean that 4 in 10 students don’t know their right to free speech. Students don’t understand the freedom they have to practice their religion, they don’t understand that without these freedoms there would be no press or media outlets to report the truth about government corruption, they don’t know why men and women across the nation are able to assemble in support of equality during the Women’s March, and they don’t know that it was the freedom to petition the government that introduced a policy allowing students to repay student loans based on income, rather than a standard 10-year repayment schedule.

The Annenberg survey, among others, inspired members of Media of Nebraska to begin a public awareness campaign called “Think F1rst,” about the First Amendment of the United States Constitution.

Members of Media of Nebraska unveiled their campaign on June 28, during a news conference at the Nebraska State Capitol. The campaign began on July 4 and will run through Sept. 30 across statewide radio and television stations, newspapers and social media outlets.

“The purpose of “Think F1rst” is to encourage all Nebraskans to think about the five freedoms guaranteed in the First Amendment: freedom of religion, of speech, of the press, to peacefully assemble and to petition the government,” Nebraska Press Association’s Susan Watson stated. “The campaign will feature a farmer, a college student, a health care professional, a journalist and a pastor stating the various freedoms given to them under the First Amendment.”

In the following weeks, The Eagle will run each of the “Think F1rst” ads. It is important for CSC students and all college students to know their First Amendment rights, and to think and talk about how those rights are exercised and protected on college campuses.

Don’t get caught up in your Bright Side social life, college comes first On the

Rachel Mitchell Columnist Welcome back Eagles!

It’s the start of a new semester and new school year. For some of you this is your very first year so welcome! For others this might be your last year or somewhere in the middle.

I’m sure all of you are excited to see your friends, meet new people and get into the swing of things. There are always so many things to look forward to such as RLA events, sports games and nights hanging out with friends.

Which could mean going out to the

movies or going out to a party. College is a time for us to go out and enjoy our lives, but that is not the only thing college is about.

I think a common misconception

about going to college is that it’s expected of us to go to parties. It is easy to forget sometimes that you are also building your future in these years.

College is not just a social foundation but an academic future as well. I think it is important to go out, meet people and have fun, but there is a reality to being in college. You’re going to school to build a better foundation for your future self. Whether it’s in a sport or in a specific field of study, there are consequences to your actions. If you go out drinking or doing other things and make a stupid decision you could have severe consequences to that action.

College is meant to open you up to new opportunities, but do not get caught up in it all. If you are out every night drinking or not studying and not showing up to class you could be damaging your future.

Think ahead. Find someone to drive you home if you’ve been out drinking.

If you are sleeping through your alarms and keep missing classes find someone who will call you or knock on your door to get you up.

If you are out every weekend, whether it’s for sports or you’re doing other things, make sure you are leaving time for your studies.

Avoid burnout: balance your extracurriculars Katelyn Lambert Contributor School is officially back in session, which means due dates are being set and students are hitting the ground running. Clubs are setting up their first meetings for the academic year, the first shifts at new jobs have been posted and the responsibilities as students are coming at us at full speed.

It is easy to be swept up into the excitement of the new year, especially when it comes to the extracurriculars Chadron State has to offer, be it athletics or the arts, or any activity in between.

Involvement is an important part of college, as it allows you to meet new people who share a common interest with you while also participating in activities that you can add on to your resume. But, it is also important to not get overwhelmed with responsibilities

when you may not have the time.

When signing up for extracurriculars for the year, keep your sanity in mind and take a look at the time you have available to dedicate to a club, sport or organization.

Sure, one activity may sound like a lot of fun now. You may not be too busy right now, or maybe you have several friends in one particular club.

Before signing up, though, take a step back and look at your schedule.

If you have a job either on or off campus, how many hours a week are you working?

With your classes, how many credit hours are you enrolled in and how much are you going to need to study?

As for what the club entails, try to get a hold of a club member, officer or adviser and find out more information. How often does the club meet? As a member, what are your responsibilities? What are the time commitments needed for the club?

These are some of the small questions you should ask yourself before signing up for an extracurricular.

Looking introspectively to ensure your availability to dedicate to a club before putting your name on the line to be a club member will save you and others stress down the road.

When you sign up, those people will count on you to play your part in the organization. If you can’t deliver, you will

be putting stress on both you and those relying on you, which is a lose-lose situation for all involved.

Some people thrive on staying busy, and others need to have plenty of time to themselves.

Free time to do small tasks like tidying your house, watching a few episodes of “Stranger Things,” going grocery shopping or grabbing a cup of coffee with a classmate can make all of the difference in preventing excessive stress, and it is important to know what you can do to prevent yourself from getting overwhelmed.

Get involved, but only to the point in which you feel comfortable. If that means choosing one club to focus on, or trying your hand at four different clubs, get involved to the extent you want to, not just for the sake of tacking onto the back page of your resume.

For your sake, try and find your balance this year to help you succeed as a student.

community, so bringing both of those together, I think is really important.”

Incorporating the State Park helped Northrup’s goal to bridge the community and campus.

The State Park included activities like a paddle boat race, a disc golf tournament, kickball, wiffle ball and archery. Student Senate paid to waive the parking pass fee for the day.

About 35 students attended the event.

“This is the first time ever doing something like

this at the State Park. There is always a kick back to having it so far out of town. We tried to provide transportation, but it did not work out,” Northrup said.

Along with the State Park Day, Welcome Week opened with MoveIn Thursday and included a Pancake Feed, the Backyard Bash Barbecue and Uptown on Campus.

With a few days left in the week, students can attend the Library Learning Commons, today, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. in the Library; the Glow Party, tonight, 9 midnight in The Hub; “Night at the

Museum,” Saturday, 7 p.m. - midnight; and Free Movie Night Sunday, 7 p.m. at the Eagle Theater.

Northrup began planning Welcome Week before the Spring semester ended in attempt to involve more clubs.

“I’m sure you can imagine that the minute students leave for the summer it’s automatically ‘emails off,’ ‘I’m cut off,’ and ‘no school,’” she said. “I tried to get them thinking about it and what activities they wanted to do.”

Take a chance on ‘Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again’ The sequel to the hit musical ‘Mamma Mia!’ leaves audiences humming ABBA Torri Brumbaugh Co-Editor Musicals and disco music both make me happy, but together, they put me in good mood for the rest of the week.

Knowing this, you can only imagine how I felt when “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again” brought ABBA to life on the big screen once again.

“Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again” is the sequel to the film adaptation of “Mamma Mia!,” the Tony nominated Broadway musical.

The original musical revolves around Sophie, played by Amanda Seyfried in the

movie, and her mother Donna, played by Meryl Streep.

Donna is a single mother who runs a hotel on a small island in Greece and is planning her daughter’s wedding. Sophie surprises her mother by inviting the three men that may possibly be her father to her wedding.

In the midst of wedding chaos and past love, we never discover who Sophie’s father is. Instead, all three men step up to care for Sophie, but we are left to question how Donna could have three suitors in such a short span of time.

Thankfully, “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again” answers that question.

The musical’s sequel relives Donna’s

past life as she leaves home and travels to Greece. Along the way, she meets three dashing young men that all instantly fall for her charm. In the original script, it seems that Donna’s three love affairs are scandalous, but in the new film they are revealed to be sweet and serendipitous.

Young Donna is played by Lily James, the actress who brought “Cinderella” to life in the 2015 live-action remake. I loved Lily James in “Cinderella,” and I enjoyed watching her take on the role of a young, independent woman.

The original “Mamma Mia!” cast is also a part of the new film, including Meryl Streep, whose character is dead during the film.

Sophie reminisces on her mother’s impact in her life and on their small Greek island as she prepares to re-open the hotel her mother always dreamed about.

To celebrate the opening, all three of her potential fathers attend the celebration. They reflect on the first time they met Donna and the love they had.

Young Donna is an inspiring character as she graduates valedictorian and then ventures to Greece on her own. She is independent and self-assured, and it is easy to see why all three men fall for her.

Many have commented that the strong leads in both “Mamma Mia!” and “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again” have empowered women and distinguish the films as feminist showcases.

“Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again” does replay hits featured in the first movie. While there has been criticism that reusing the songs lacks originality and makes this film too comparable to the first film, there are only so many

ABBA songs to choose from. In fact, I see no problem with using the music that audiences fell in love with in the first place.

ABBA’s music ranges from sentimental to upbeat and fun. Every audience member will leave the film singing the tune of one of their many hits. The playfulness of the music draws the viewer in and helps show the character of the film, the script and the character’s themselves. However, the slower paced songs may cause some to shed a tear because they add to the sentiment established in honoring Donna’s life and memory.

While ABBA and an amazing first movie are enough to draw in a crowd for “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again,” I know many people attended the movie for one reason: Cher.

Cher is an icon, and the director and cast must have known she would draw a crowd, but Cher’s role in the movie as Donna’s mother is unbelievable.

It is hinted in the original “Mamma Mia!” that Donna’s mother is dead, so it is quite a shock when the diva appears on screen. Cher is also 72 years old, while Streep is 69, making it improbable that an audience would actually believe Cher is her mother.

Cher’s role in the film is simply for show, but the diva does bring in an element of surprise to the film.

Despite replayed songs and a sometimes illogical storyline, “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again” is a must see for those who enjoy a light-hearted film and pretending they’re a “dancing queen.” I still find myself singing the tunes from the movie and shopping for plane tickets to Greece to find my long lost love, and it’s been weeks since I’ve seen the film.

the girls, that we have to be better.”

“The girls last year started to obtain that mindset more consistently, and we were able to have a better season,” she said.

Getting better to Mullis means more wins this season, a task she knows is made all the more difficult with this year’s addition of a 16th team, Dixie State, to the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, but she’s confident in her group.

For her players, she says, the conversation is all about one thing – making the playoffs.

“The number one goal the girls continue to talk about is making post-season play,” Mullis said, adding that it’s been a daily topic of conversation throughout the preseason.

In pursuit of that goal Mullis has brought nine new players to the team, seven as freshmen and two as transfers.

Mullis says that when planning for her second ever CSC recruit class she knew she wanted to address team height.

“Specifically we had to get taller in the front row,” Mullis said. “Our blocking has to improve so we had to grow a little. The RMAC is a very tall conference so we needed to continue to keep pace.”

The new class includes freshman Aracely Hernandez, of Greeley, Colorado, who Mullis says is an all-around, competitive, player she expects to see good things from.

Mullis is also high on freshman Amelia Berg, of Fort Collins, Colorado, an outside hitter who she says should bring size to the net the team didn’t have last year.

The third year coach says she has no shortage of praise for her incoming players who have joined 10 returning players already on the roster.

With a nearly even split, Mullis isn’t afraid of the relatively high number of newcomers.

“When you’re rebuilding a program you bring in more new than not in the first few years,” she said. “But I really do believe that overall we have a balance. We have a lot of new young ladies joining our team, however, the returners are very solid core players for us.

Mullis says she believes her team has a strong core of leadership, evident in the fact that players recently voted in four captains for the upcoming season.

Three seniors were among the four captains voted for including Madison Webb, of Loveland, Colorado, who in her fourth year with the team is expected to bring her usual consistently good play; and senior Micky Trimble, of Platte City, Missouri, who Mullis says fans should expect to see splitting time both as a center and a defensive specialist this season.

Senior Dominika Senkerikova, of Uhersky Brod, Czech Republic the team’s most reliable offensive threat from last season, will also act as captain this coming season but is still coming off an injury.

“We’re not expecting her to be back to one-hundred-percent for the next week-and-a-half, two-weeks,” Mullis said. “Right now she’s playing her role as far as getting some touches in practice and rehabilitating so she’s ready for conference.”

Rounding out the group of captains is junior middle hitter Timmi Keisel, of Fleming, Colorado, who Mullis says tends to go underrated.

“Timmi (Keisel) a lot of the time doesn’t get a lot of credit because she’s not flashy,” Mullis said, “but that’s what I love most about her. She’s just really solid and consistent and just does her job.”

This past Friday Mullis’ group fine-tuned their skills in preseason contests against Central Wyoming and South Dakota Mines and will start their season this Friday at the Lindenwood Challenge in St. Charles, Missouri.

At the challenge they’ll face Urbana and Lindenwood on Friday, then Missouri S&T and Southern Nazarene on Saturday.

Chadron State grad Stansbury still runs Brandon Davenport Sports Editor No longer a member of Chadron State College’s cross country squad hasn’t slowed 2016 graduate Dylan Stansbury, who continues to succeed in the running world.

Recently he finished among the top tier at the Big Ten Network Big 10k race in Chicago, Sunday, Aug. 12. In that race he placed 17th in a field of 4,595 runners, finishing in 34 minutes, 18 seconds. His time was seventh best among men, 25 to 29.

Stansbury, who resides in Crawford, declined to comment

for this story.

Earlier this summer, Stansbury, who earned Second-Team All-American honors as a CSC senior, participated in Chadron’s Colter Run, a prominent local event.

In the Colter he defended his 10k title, winning it for the fourth consecutive year.

In June, Stansbury ran in this year’s Bolder Boulder 10k, finishing in 33 minutes, 27 seconds.

His time put him 34th in a field of 20,994 in the men’s division.

CSC hires Foley as cross country coach Brandon Davenport Sports Editor Earlier this week Chadron announced they’d found their new head coach of cross country. He is Scott Foley, formerly of Black Hills State.

Foley will also be an assistant with the track and field team.

Chadron wasted little time finding a qualified coach to fill the position vacated by former coach Brian Medigovich, who recently resigned to take a position at Adams State, his alma mater.

“It happened rather quickly with the previous coach taking another opportunity,” Foley, who is a friend of Medigovich, said.

“I was fortunate some people in the know dropped my name, and [Athletic Director] Joel Smith gave me a call sort of out of the blue, to me, and asked if I’d like to come down and check things out,” Foley said.

Foley made the trip to Chadron two weeks ago, was interviewed, offered the job, and accepted on the spot.

The 29-year-old coach says he was familiar with Chadron due to his proximity at Black Hills State and his having traveled to Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference meets here on more than one occasion.

In the end, he says his decision was easy.

“Chadron really won me over,” he said. “I feel my decision to come here was really made simple by the community support I got to witness here, and the support of the athletic department.

“Chadron to me is a perfect mixing spot for an excellent cross country team,” Foley said. “We have trails, we have State Parks, we have endless dirt roads.”

Foley also believes he’ll be able to attract talent to his program.

“Chadron [first off ] is an amazing university that provides an extremely affordable education,” Foley said. “I’m incredibly excited about recruiting and trying to expand our roster in-state and out-of-state.”

Prior to accepting the position Foley had been the head coach at Black Hills State for the past three years. He grew up in Cheyenne, Wyoming, and was an accomplished runner during his high school career, and continued to have success while an undergrad at Boise State University, Idaho.

He spent one year as a volunteer coach with Boise State before moving back to Cheyenne where he spent two years teaching health and physical education, and coaching, at Cheyenne South.

Foley then moved to Black Hills State to coach and pursue his masters.

“Scott is a person who has experience in the RMAC and a knowledge of our athletes,” Smith said.

“He will be a great adition to our coaching staff.”

Chadron State hosts Jamboree Brandon Davenport Sports Editor

Chadron State College’s Chicoine Center recently played host to the Nebraska High School Sports Hall of Fame Volleyball Jamboree. The event, which combined a Nebraska State Activities Association officials clinic with a series of scrimmages among 12 area high school volleyball teams, raised money for the Hall of Fame. CSC staff helped organize the event and players from the Eagles’ volleyball team volunteered as line judged and scorekeepers.

Last Thursday Chadron State College played host to several high school volleyball teams during the Nebraska High School Sports Hall of Fame Volleyball Jamboree.

The jamboree brought together 12 area high school teams for a series of preseason scrimmages.

CSC volleyball coach Riann Mullis says the event was a team effort between Mary Lou Marshall, retired physical education teacher with Chadron Public schools, former Chadron volleyball coach, and current Nebraska volleyball official; Linda Rischling, Chadron Elementary physical education teacher, and Nebraska volleyball official; Mullis and Chadron High School Athletic Director Andy Pope.

Marshall had the idea to take advantage of a Nebraska School Activities Association official’s clinic being held in Chadron and pair it with the scrimmages.

CSC Athletic Director Joel Smith touted the event as a way for the college to show off its facilities while also giving back to the community.

Members of the CSC volleyball team volunteered for the event as line judges and scorekeepers.
