CSC TO PLAY FIRST NIGHT GAME IN REMODELED STADIUM This Labor Day weekend, the Eagles will compete at home, facing off against the Black Hills State University Yellow Jackets in the only home night game of the season, and the first at Chadron State College’s since the 1970s.

According to Con Marshall, the namesake of the stadium press box, the last CSC night game took place Sept. 25, 1976, against Kearney State.

A playoff game between Chadron High School and Adams Central was played in 1977, formerly the last night game played on Elliott Field.

With renovations nearing completion and the grand opening set for Sept.

15, the Eagles are prepped to perform under the lights, kicking off at 6:30 p.m., Saturday, at Elliott Field.

CAB Reps. to discuss meeting proposal with clubs Krystal Kesselring Co-Editor CAB tabled the vote on student government moving weekly meeting times to Monday nights after clubs provided input during Tuesday’s meeting, the first CAB meeting of the semester.

CAB Chair Kimberly Hernandez discussed a proposal to change the meeting time of CAB to 5 p.m. on Monday nights prior to the Senate meetings at 5:30 p.m.

“The purpose of this (change) is for productivity, being more proactive than reactive, and we can present information to Senate quicker than we usually do,” Hernandez said.

CAB representatives discussed pros and cons of the proposal, and decided to postpone voting until the following CAB meet-

ing in order to discuss the proposal with club members.

“We will not initiate (the change) until it passes through Senate as well, which won’t be until late September, early October,” Hernandez said.

This proposal in CAB came after discussion was raised during Monday’s Senate meeting.

There will be a mandatory club fair from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. on Wednesday in the Student Center Ballroom. Each club must have at least one person stationed at their table for the duration of the event.

Revised club packets are due at the next CAB meeting Tuesday. An email was sent out from CAB to clubs with instructions on how to complete club packets. All clubs need to submit updated rosters and executive boards.

‘Family Style’ exhibit set for Memorial Hall

The Newman House will be hosting a film titled “The Dating Project” at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 5, in the Scottsbluff Room. The event is free of charge and open to the entire campus. “The Dating Project” focuses on how traditional dating is a thing of the past, yet we still seek out meaningful relationships. This 70-minute film focuses on our current dating culture and how to feel self-worth, be empowered and loved in today’s society.

Senate proposes permanent meeting time adjustment Katelyn Lambert & Devin Fulton Lifestyles Editor & Reporter A proposal to move meeting times for all student government-related organizations to one night was discussed during the first Student Senate meeting of the semester Monday.

Senate is looking to approve a proposal to move all meetings - executive boards, committees, CAB and Senate - to Monday, rather than the current system of Senate meeting Monday nights and CAB on Tuesday nights.

The purpose of this proposal is to ensure that students and advisers involved in student government can dedicate one night per week to meetings, allowing more time to be active on campus.

One of the options proposes that meetings would begin at 4 p.m. Monday with a meeting of the executive boards, followed by committees at 4:30 p.m. After the adjournment of those two meetings, CAB would meet at 5

p.m. and Senate at 5:30 p.m.

The other option proposes executive boards meeting at 4:30 p.m., committees and CAB at 5 p.m. and Senate at 6 p.m.

The meeting time change would allow clubs to discuss ideas and upcoming events in CAB meetings, then present the information gathered in the meeting to Senate immediately following adjournment of the CAB meeting. If this change is put in place, the decision-making process will be sped up for both CAB and Senate.

If the meetings were held in one night, the current issue for Senate waiting for CAB discussion would be reduced. Currently, Senate must wait a week before voting on issues brought forth in CAB meetings the night following. With the meetings occurring consecutively, student government decisions could be reached sooner.

CAB would also have the opportunity to proactively communicate with Senate rather

than waiting a week to address any concerns.

This proposal would become effective Sept. 10, pending approval from both CAB and Senate. More details on this proposal will come at the next Senate meeting, Sept. 10.

Two senators were sworn in during Monday’s meeting. Michael Pacheco-Woolman, freshman of Broomfield, Colorado, and Natnael Tadesse, junior of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, were elected senators and voted unanimously into office.

The polls for the High Rise senator position open Wednesday, Sept. 5 and close at noon, Friday, Sept. 7.

Aaron Jones, sophomore of Custer, South Dakota, and Kristina McGann, senior of Broken Bow, are running for the High Rise senator positions.

Christian Hulsey was re-elected as the Solicitor General for Senate.

Senate currently has $59,880 in unallocated funds.

Senate approved $495 for an educational license that would allow the campus to show a documentary raising awareness on suicide.

This license works solely for this specific documentary, but the license allows the film to be shown repeatedly, rather than on a restricted basis.

Senate also approved $341.60 to pay for eight-dozen cookies and 200 pocket Constitution booklets for a Constitution Day celebration on Sept. 18 in the Student Center.

The celebration is with Justice Studies and co-sponsored with the English department and School of Liberal Arts Dean James Margetts.

The first Free Bowling Night of the semester, sponsored by CAB, will be from 6-9 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 9 at Hilltop Lanes.

As Monday, Sept. 3 is Labor Day, there will be no Senate meeting next Monday. The next meeting will be held at 5 p.m., Monday, Sept. 10.

whatsoever, yet lead extravagant lives, traveling and spending money that will never run out?

Is it the Insta-famous lifestyle bloggers who don’t have a single hair out of place and whose makeup is perfect, even when they “aren’t wearing any?”

No. It’s our parents. The people who gave us life and hoped for a better future. The one’s who didn’t want us to know struggle or pain.

It all started when they cut the crust off of our PB&J sandwiches.

While I’m not sure when or why this “cut the crust” phenomenon began, I do know that the phenomenon reached its height in 1995 when Smucker’s introduced “Uncrustables” to schools in the Midwestern states.

Soon after, these crust-less pockets of creamy peanut butter and grape jelly would span the nation in schools and in homes.

But these crust-less sandwiches represent a whole new problem for our generation: we were having concessions made for our dislikes by people who weren’t our parents. The school system conceded.

At the age of five, we wanted something and the world gave us a solu-

This is, in essence, what all millennials want. We want endless choices, but we won’t make a permanent decision. We want a life filled with variety and adventure, but we don’t want to work our entire lives for it. We want instant gratification and results, but many think we haven’t earned them.

Before you get offended, be honest with yourself. The rumors are true: most of us do have a sense of entitlement. If you take the time to really search inside, you know it’s true.

Those who see college as a party get mad at the professor when they don’t get an A on the exam. Those who slack off and don’t contribute to groups get offended when they’re asked to leave.

Those who do work hard are often appalled when their efforts aren’t met with praise and grand gestures of appreciation.

So, what is it that has made us this way?

Overall, we learned one lesson that would become the pinnacle of our generation. If you don’t like something, you don’t have to put up with it.

What does this phenomenon mean for us as adults going in to the workforce?

It means that we won’t put up with things we don’t like. We won’t settle for dreary nine-to-five jobs that we hate, just because the benefits are good. We will seek happiness above job security. We won’t stand for injustices. We will help close the gender pay gap. We won’t be told that we can’t accomplish our goals. We will use the resources available to us and capitalize on a market of people’s dislikes, and the “Uncrustables” legacy will continue.

So, give your mom a call and thank her for cutting the crust off your sandwiches when you were 3 years old, and making you the person you are today.

Oh, and be sure to thank her for the monthly care package.

Rough start for volleyball team Brianna Wilson Reporter The Eagles fought hard last weekend in St. Charles, Missouri, but ultimately came home without a win after the four-game challenge.

They started off strong Friday afternoon against Urbana, but then fell to the Blue Knights 2-3 and 0-3 against the Lindenwood Lions.

They were back at it again Saturday for two more games: Missouri S&T and Southern Nazarene. The Eagles struggled to take off and lost to Missouri S&T in three sets. The women fared better against Southern Nazarene that afternoon, forcing their final challenge to four sets but ultimately lost the match 1-3.

The Eagles took the first two sets in their match against the Urbana Blue Knights, 26-24 and 25-21, but then lost the next two 25-21 and 25-22, forcing them to a fifth set. In that last set, the Eagles had four chances to take it, but eventually lost their first official match of the season, 23-21.

Against the Lindenwood Lions Friday evening, CSC struggled to take the lead, holding their biggest advantage at only 15-12. The Lions took the W in three sets, 25-18, 25-18 and a disappointing 25-8. The loss dropped the Eagles starting record to 0-2.

Saturday morning, CSC took on the Missouri S&T Miners and lost in three sets, 25-21, 25-12,

and 25-22. That afternoon against the Southern Nazarene Storm, the Eagles dropped the first two sets 25-23 and 25-20, respectively, but forced the match to four by taking the third set, 25-20.

Both teams struggled to pull ahead throughout the fourth; the Storm held the biggest lead at 24-20. The Eagles thwarted three attempts by the Storm to score the match point and recovered to 24-23 before Meagan Ellis, sophomore outside hitter of Hereford, Texas, scored the final point to end the game, 25-23, and drop the Eagles record to 0-4.

Head Coach Riann Mullis attributed most of the team’s struggles to a lack of discipline and consistency, but, overall, stated that they got better and were looking to “learn from the loss and learn from the weekend; we’re playing difficult teams to prepare for conference.”

The team is looking ahead to the rest of the season rather than dwelling on last weekend.

“Morale is good for the team; our girls are fighters,” Mullis said. “We get through everything together: we get through the losses together, we get through the wins together, we get through the injuries together.”

Throughout the weekend, freshman Aracely Hernandez of Greeley, Colorado, played a major role offensively. She was among the leading scorers in all four games and was the top scorer against Urbana with 19 kills and against Southern Nazarene with eight.

Chadron native Chandler Hageman, a red-

shirt sophomore, and Brooke Gardner, a junior of Princeville, Illinois, also distinguished themselves offensively over the weekend, logging 30 and 31 points overall, respectively.

Senior Madison Webb of Loveland, Colorado, logged the majority of the Eagles’ assists over the weekend, tallying 126 over the course of all four games.

On the defense, libero Ashton Burditt, junior of Spearfish, South Dakota, tied the school record for most digs in a match since rally scoring to 25 when she logged 36 against Urbana. She also led the team with 96 digs on the weekend.

Mullis said practice this week to prepare for next weekend is focused on consistency and minimizing errors. The team is focusing on finishing the sets, one point at a time.

“If you beat yourself, there needs to be accountability. We have to learn from losses and it can’t all be punishment and negative,” Mullis said. “We’re trying to grow and rebuild, and you can’t rebuild off of punishment.”

The Eagles will be on the road again this weekend, traveling to Pittsburg, Kansas, to participate in the Pittsburg State University Classic Friday and Saturday. Their first opponent in the classic will be Christian Brothers University, at 8 a.m., Friday, followed by Pittsburg State at noon. At 10 a.m. on Saturday, the women will take on Northwestern Oklahoma State and will compete against Cameron University to top it all off at 2 p.m.

Q: You’re coming off a great redshirt freshman season, and into one where the

team will be playing in a brand new stadium, what are your general thoughts about this upcoming season?

A: I’m really looking forward to (the season.) Obviously with the new stadium, but I’m really looking forward to how we’ve grown as an offense because we only lost two seniors last year. (Those seniors) provided a lot for us, but only losing two guys after a pretty decent year offensively, I think the coaching staff, and players especially, are expecting a lot out of our offense given our experience.

On defense, even though we lost a lot of players, I still feel like our defensive unit is really good. Every time we tie up with them in practice its always competitive.

I feel (overall) the expectations are pretty high for us.

It takes a lot of pressure off the quarterback when you have guys like Stevann Brown and Kevin Coy back there who know what they’re doing. And not only those guys, but freshman – even the young guys that know what they’re doing – it takes a lot of pressure off the quarterback so we can focus on other aspects of the game. It’s great having experienced and intelligent running backs in the backfield.

Q: The natural transition from asking about the backfield is to ask about the receiver core. Do you have a favorite target among that group?

A: I couldn’t pick one, they’re all my friends and they’re all great guys, and they’re all used differently.

You’ve got big targets, you’ve got fast guys. It’s nice because I think we have a good combination of everything, but I couldn’t pick a favorite target.

the discussion and atmosphere in the locker room going into this season?

A: I think how you have a great team is you put pressure on yourself, you don’t let people put pressure on you. I feel like our team expectations are high, you always want to do better than the previous year and the group before you. The seniors want to go out as having the best record of the past few years and I think that’s the standard we’re holding ourselves to.

The attitude in the locker room is we have to win, we need to win, and we expect to win. I think that’s what the coaching staff preaches and I think a lot of guys follow that philosophy.

Q: The team will be playing in a new stadium, in front of a new video scoreboard, will

the new facilities be a distraction this season?

A: I really don’t think so. It’s still Elliott Field and it’s still the Con Marshall Press Box. We’re still playing at Chadron, we’re still playing for the community and the fans, and I feel like the only pressure is the pressure we put on ourselves.

We’re excited to have a brand new stadium that everyone likes, but at the end of the day we’re still playing football.

Eagles’ veteran offense spawns confidence Brandon Davenport Sports Editor After over 30 practices this off-season the Chadron State Eagles are eager to get off the practice field and into game action. The team’s coaching staff will use this week to fine-tune their game plan. But for the most part, Head Coach Jay Long is happy with the team he’ll send out against Black Hills State Saturday.

“I feel good with where we’re at right now,” Long said. “I think our team is ready to go.

They’re ready to go hit someone else.”

Chadron’s offense returns nine of its starters from last year’s team and will once again be led by sophomore Dalton Holst, of Gillette, Wyoming, who last year threw for 2,337 yards and 14 touchdowns.

With senior T.D. Stein, of Chadron, healthy again there was question as to who would start, but Long was quick to answer that it would be Holst.

“Dalton’s our guy,” Long said. “He had a great summer and he’s throwing really well. He’s looking forward to building off his

freshman season.”

Long and Eagles Offensive Coordinator Chris Stein both expect that T.D. will get looks throughout the season.

“We’ll have a few packages where we’ll get T.D. in,” Long said.

Prior to the season, Eagles’ offensive linemen Jake Geil, Travis Romsa and Colt Foster were named to the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference preseason All-Star team and will serve as veterans alongside a duo of younger linemen.

“We’ve got three seniors so I can’t feel bad about the O-line,” Chris Stein said. “They’re all three good players, they’re all three leaders, and Jared (Maciejczak) fits right in with them. He might as well be a senior - thank God he’s not but he might as well be.”

Add redshirt freshman, Austin Rapp, and the offensive coordinator is feeling “pretty dang good about the O-line.”

If the line plays as expected, Holst should have plenty of time to look for one of Chadron’s several dependable receivers.

“Our receiving core is very solid this year,” Long said. “It’s got a lot of talent on it and I think we have a couple guys who can break the game open with big plays.”

The coaching staff is also confident in their backfield which features senior Kevin Coy along with juniors Stevann Brown, of Casper, Wyoming, and Priest Jennings, of Stockton, California, who are expected to start despite being held out of practice to heal some “bumps and bruises.”

In the wake of Brown and Jennings sitting practices out, true freshman Elijah Myles, of Hawthorne, California, has emerged as a prospective back this season.

“This year’s offense won’t change much but it has been working to improve the pace with which it plays,” Chris Stein said.

Unlike the offense, the defense lost several players this past season, but Long said

he’s not concerned.

“I’m excited about our defense,” Long said.

“We graduated nine seniors, but when I look at the guys that we have I think we have the talent to be one of the best defenses in the conference.”

Long says that senior athletes Kyle Temple, of Norfolk, on the defensive line; Zecharie James, of Hampton, Virginia, who Long says is now in a position to be “the guy” in the secondary; and linebacker Keenan Johnson are three players he expects to be leaders on the defense.

“One of the things Chadron State has always been known for is we have tough people and tough teams, and that’s something we want to continue...” Long said. “When you have a bunch of guys that are great workers and come from great families, those are things that help build that atmosphere, and that culture, that’s what our program’s all about.”
