CSC students receive NASA grants Torri Brumbaugh Co-Editor Three CSC students have received the NASA Nebraska Space Grant to pursue research in their selected fields.

With over 40 recipients, Jessica Rowshandel, 37, senior of Los Angeles; Chance Adolf, 23, junior of Papilion; and Isaac Langan, 22, senior McCook, each received $4,000 grants to conduct research from now until February. In April, the three will present their research to the Nebraska Academy of Sciences.

During the application process, applicants were asked to relate their research to space and NASA’s goals. Rowshandel and Adolf, both geoscience majors, will conduct research that will help establish the geology of Mars. Langan, a chemistry major, will be looking at local uranium levels, a process that may be used in future water testing on Mars.

A major proponent for applying for the NASA research grants was Michael Liete, professor of physical and life sciences, at CSC. “Dr. Liete is amazing. If it wasn’t for him, this wouldn’t have happened. He is the reason I applied for the grant,” Rowshandel said. “It’s really incredible to do actual research.”

“For a lot of us, research is required at Chadron to graduate, so he understands that if you’re gonna do the research, it’s nice to have a grant for it,” Langan said.

Jessica Rowshandel is an undergraduate geosciences and mathematics student at Chadron State College and pursuing a career in planetary science and science writing. She has a bachelor’s degree in forensic psychology and an master’s in social work. As a NASA Nebraska Space Grant Fellow, she will be researching new analog mapping sites that mimic a variety of Mars settings, which could then be used for testing unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) geologic mapping capabilities. She will create a database of these locations ranked by suitability. The purpose of this research is to help ensure the greatest probability of success with UAV-assisted geologic mapping in order to provide over-the-horizon views of potential science targets, sample cache locations, and reconnaissance of safe navigation paths for the first possible UAV-assisted Mars mission (i.e., the Mars Helicopter proposed for the Mars 2020 mission).

Isaac Langan

Chance Adolf is an undergraduate student at Chadron State College pursuing a major in geoscience and a minor in water resource management. As a NASA Nebraska fellowship recipient, he will be conducting research involving the development of quantitative mapping standards for robotically generated maps that can be used to assess both quality and accuracy. With geologic mapping now possible on Mars because of NASA’s rover program, geologists need some objective measures with which to judge map accuracy. Standards developed in this research could potentially offer conventional guidelines for robotic (rover) assisted geologic mapping on Mars with the goal that the maps be as good as maps generated by human geologists.

Isaac Langan is an undergraduate student at Chadron State College pursuing a major in chemistry. As a NASA Nebraska Space Grant Fellow, he will be researching the uranium levels near the Crow Butte uranium mines in Western Nebraska from private uranium wells, as well as looking at the nitrate concentrations. He will also be examining the uranium concentrations in water, which will relate to NASA’s search for quality water on other planets, specifically Mars. Besides the polar ice caps located on Mars, there are possible secondary aquifers on the planet. Because the water does not reach Mars’ atmosphere, it may be usable, which is where Langan’s research will come into play.

Just do it: Sticking with bold decisions “Believe in something. Even if it means sacrificing everything.”

Nike sparked controversy with this phrase when they debuted their new advertisement featuring former NFL quarterback, Colin Kaepernick, to celebrate their 30th anniversary.

A storm began to brew as the news of Nike’s new ad spread through social media. Videos and photos emerged of people burning and cutting the signature “swoosh” off of their Nike apparel.

The reaction by a divided and enraged country shows that Nike’s campaign is bold and justified when considering Kaepernick’s protest and Nike’s brand.

Kaepernick first started his peaceful protests in 2016 by sitting during the National Anthem. These protests were meant to bring attention to police brutality against African Americans, not to disrespect the flag as most think. After meeting with US veteran and former Seattle Seahawk, Nate Boyer, who discussed his disagreement with Kaepernick’s protests, Kaepernick and Boyer came to an agreement: Kaepernick would kneel during the anthem.

Kneeling during the anthem was still not welcomed by many, but the two’s

reasons for kneeling logically made sense and showed respect.

Boyer said that people kneel when they pray and soldiers kneel to honor a fellow fallen soldier. It is a sign of respect to those who have been lost, not a sign of disrespect to the country. It only makes sense that Kaepernick should respect those lost to injustice and police brutality by taking a knee. The protest would be small, dignified, yet have an impact.

Two years after the initial protest, Kaepernick signing with Nike reinforces their trend of pushing the boundaries and jumping into heated debates.

The New York Times said that during last year’s Black History Month, Nike created a campaign titled “Equality,” starring black athletes like Serena Williams, LeBron James and Kevin Durant.

“Nike from Day 1 has really been a brand that has stood up to and stood for things that were important to them and important to their athletes, so I think there’s a little precedence there,” said Mary Scott, a president at UEG, a sports, entertainment and lifestyle marketing agency.

change, a change that Kaepernick hopes to inspire. Most brands continue to tiptoe around heated topics in fear of upsetting either side of our divided country.

For such a huge brand, one that is also a large sponsor of the NFL, to affiliate themselves with a controversial, yet peaceful, protest, shows guts - and that is precisely what Nike is about.

Men and women have fought to ensure our right to protest and have free speech, and are sworn to defend American citizens from enemies, both foreign and domestic. While some may not like it, this also ensures our right to kneel in solidarity with those who have been oppressed.

Another voice for the oppressed, Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Nonviolence is a powerful and just weapon. which cuts without wounding and ennobles the man who wields it. It is a sword that heals.”

We encourage Kaepernick and his supporters, such as Nike, to stand beside their decisions and stand with those who have lost their voice. No matter how many Nike tennis shoes have been turned to ash, people have lost their lives to defend the right to this poignant protest.

Tips to combat homesickness Bright Side On the Rachel Mitchell Columnist No matter where you are in your college career, I think everyone gets homesick at one point or another. Some of us are farther from home than others. There are even some who would have to travel days to make it back home to see family or friends. It’s, unfortunately, a feeling we all experience.

According to NBC News, 69 percent of first year college students report feeling homesick.

Personally, I get homesick more than I care to admit. I’m a huge family person.

Although you may not be feeling homesick right now since it is only the second week of school, you might feel homesick sometime within the next few weeks.

We might not be able to hop into a car and go see our parents when we feel

homesick, but there might be a few other ways to combat that feeling and make college a little easier. Here are a few suggestions to try and prevent homesickness.

First and foremost, do not give yourself a hard time. Being homesick is not a weakness or a sign of emotional instability. It’s something that affects most students. Do not feel guilty about being homesick.

Another way to get your mind off

homesickness is by getting out of your room and hanging around friends or being a part of a club. Having a social outlet helps homesickness immensely. There are dozens of clubs and activities to participate on campus that can connect you to people and help get you involved. If you aren’t a club person, plan a study group or lunch once a week with your friends. By doing this, you’ll have something to look forward to and have people around you to lift your spirits.

If you are more of an introvert but still need some extra help getting out of your shell or need someone to talk to, find a teacher and see what resources are available on campus. There’s nothing wrong with trying to find another way to have an outlet. There are plenty of resources and faculty members that would be happy to help make you feel at home here. Don’t hesitate to ask.

Finally, stay positive. Trust me, I know that can be difficult sometimes. The good thing about trying to stay positive is that you are essentially telling yourself that you will make it. We all have our ups and downs and that is okay. But you do not want to get stuck in a down place for too long. Write yourself positive little messages on sticky notes and put them around your room. Give yourself a pep talk or plan to watch your favorite movie.

Making the effort to be positive will more than likely help keep the homesickness at bay.

I hope that if you are struggling that you will let someone know. Whether it’s your RA or a teacher or a friend, there’s nothing wrong with saying you’re homesick. There are always people around you who want to see you succeed and be comfortable at your home away from home.

Origami helps improve mental health Abigail Swanson Contributor The Japanese art-form of origami has been floating around for hundreds of years, but did you know that origami can promote mindfulness and mental peace?

By regularly folding, you could experience benefits in other areas of life, not just getting crisper folds. Marlynn Wei in a Psychology Today article explores how the practice of origami can impact mental wellbeing.

First off, there are the physical benefits, ranging from better hand-eye coordination to better special visualization and improved concentration. All of these

would be extremely helpful in daily life, whether studying for a test or putting together that new desk you have been avoiding assembling.

Origami can also help you accept the mistakes you make everyday. When you fold an origami figure, no matter how hard you try, you will never get it quite perfect. And yet, it can still turn into something beautiful. If you apply this concept to daily life, it relives a little of the stress we heap upon ourselves trying to be perfect.

Also, while you can do origami by yourself, there is nothing like sharing the joy of a new skill with someone else.

Teaching anyone, whether an adult or a

child, how to fold and sharing with them the pleasure of creating a three-dimensional object from a flat sheet of paper is a joy in itself.

Most people have toyed with origami in one form or another, whether folding simple paper foxes or tearing paper to shreds in frustration after trying for the millionth time to understand those cryptic step-by-step folding instructions.

Today however, there is no need to suffer through complex origami manuals; YouTube abounds with tutorials ranging from easy to impossible. The materials you need to start are simple: a piece of paper, scissors (to trim your paper into a perfect square) and patience. And you

don’t even have to have a special kind of paper. You can get pre-squared origami paper, but you can also use regular printer paper, the pages of that syllabus you never read, wrapping paper, paper bags and even candy wrappers (you can make the most adorable paper cranes from pink and yellow starburst wrappers).

You can also start folding at any time, practicing patience and concentration while at the same time creating a beautiful object to decorate your dorm. And, if you want to experience the beauty of origami without folding it yourself, make sure to be looking up at the colorful hanging butterflies in Old Admin.

Be supportive of freshmen siblings on campus Samantha Persinger Contributor These past two weeks have been possibly the most stressful return to college in my entire career.

With classes, tuition, and social groups contributing to my stress the one thing I have been worried about the most is my freshman sibling.

Of course, I was thinking he would start his college career without needing my help at all, being the independent soul that he is. I found out the hard way to never underestimate your freshman sibling.

I was on the phone constantly explaining how Chadron State College works. For a short while, before he made some new friends, I saw him more in one week than during the three months of summer. I was worried that no fresh-

man friends would come along, or that I would be stuck babysitting him for the rest of my life.

Deep down I truly cared about how his freshman year in college would turn out. Despite all the dramatic stress that I put myself through, everything evened out for me and my sibling.

Stress is always a factor when you are moving back to college but having someone you have known for most of your life can cause more.

To all the upperclassmen that have freshman siblings moving in, you may have even more stress.

Your sister may call you in a panic because she forgot her hairbrush, or your brother may ask if he can use your car to get the Command Strips he needs to hang his Fortnite poster.

No matter the problem, no matter the inconvenience, you are the go-to person, because you are

their first friend on campus.

When you get a panicked call at 7:55 in the morning because they cannot find the NPAC, pick it up and direct them the right way.

They are calling you because they trust you.

Do not let the stress and inconvenience get you down, learn to appreciate it, because that only lasts for a short while. Later, you both may look back and laugh at those wonderful memories that not many people get to experience.

Siblings are the friends that you are stuck with for life. Soon they will know where all the buildings are on campus and they have you to thank. When they get older and need some good advice about a professor, give them some tips.

You can be the best teacher they have in life, so forget the stress and appreciate your siblings.

Find yourself in the constellations Devin Fulton Reporter An activity that has helped me immensely during my spare time at CSC and one that I would recommend for you is stargazing.

Aside from the brief hike up C Hill (or anywhere away from the city lights) this activity is simple. Just look up at the stars.

Space is a magnificent sight that we take for granted or don’t even allow ourselves the time to check out.

Instead, we spend most of our nights stressing out in front of a computer over procrastinated assignments, leaving us mentally fatigued. College is a busy time and it has become imperative that students consume so much information in our daily lives,

but what about finding mental clarity for ourselves?

I make a bi-weekly trip to C Hill to ponder at the sight of the stars. This routine has been revolutionary for my mindset and has helped me figure out who I am and what I want to do. I have only ever felt influenced to be someone else when consuming from an artificially lit screen.

Being with just yourself and the stars, you are allowing yourself to open up your mind since you actually get to listen to yourself. Stargazing has provided me with the opportunity to get lost, but ultimately to end up finding myself (as clichĂŠ as that sounds).

It is better to get lost in creative thoughts that are your own, instead of the consump-

tion of mundane thoughts from everybody else. This activity also creates a certain curiosity within us simply because the entire universe is beyond our eyes, leaving us with many thought provoking questions about our own lives and purpose.

I feel the most in touch with myself and who I would like to become during the times I am on my own with the stars. I feel that getting in touch with who we are without the influence of so many different people is especially difficult while living on a campus.

The campus life has always been compared to living in a fishbowl, and the digital age we live in makes this case even more true. However, escaping from the noise and just listening to yourself while

staring into something larger than life is a marvelous vacation for your mind.

You are the most important person in your life, so you should definitely get to know yourself. Let the universe get to know you, too.

At the end of the day, I can’t tell you what to do, but I can give a suggestion, and that is to spend just thirty minutes by yourself or with a friend and enjoy the stars. You will find some really interesting constellations and hopefully a peace of mind.

Life is stressful and busy, but gazing at the infinite amount of space can bring a calming perspective to your life, letting you know that everything is part of the process of life. Connect with nature and get lost in the stars to find yourself.

Chadron State football explodes in rain-soaked opener Brandon Davenport & Devin Fulton Sports Editor & Contributor After a summer of anticipation as renovations to Don Beebe Stadium and Elliott Field were made, fans and players had to wait a bit longer than expected Saturday evening as heavy rains delayed the Eagles’ opener by two hours. The long wait, however, didn’t stop the team from coming out strong and cruising to a 45-8 victory over rival Black Hills State.

“With all the rain and the lightning delays we just sat in the locker room and simmered and simmered and simmered,” Eagles’ Head Coach Jay Long said after the win. “When the guys got to come out on the football field it’s like they exploded.”

3,500 fans who endured the rain and delays weren’t let down as the Eagles’ defense immediately went to work setting up their offense with great field position when Eagles’ senior defender Zecharie James, of Hampton, Virginia, broke into the backfield and got a hand on the Yellow Jackets punt from their own 24-yard line at the close of the team’s opening possession.

The ball traveled only 16 yards as a result, leaving the Eagles’ offense poised to strike from the Black Hills 40-yard line.

The Eagles’ special teams played a big role in the win as senior Keenan Johnson, of Chadron, added another punt block on the Yellow Jackets’ third possession which set up Chadron’s second scoring drive at the Black Hills 22-yard line.

“At the beginning of the year special teams is always big,” Long said of their contribution.

Later in the second quarter when the Jackets put together their only scoring drive, Eagles’ sophomore Jake Norris, of Fort Morgan, Colorado, blocked the extra point attempt.

“That was probably (Norris’) 20th play ever on the field, so I was pretty proud of him,” Long said.

Senior Zack Kozlik, of Coronado, California, named Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Preseason Special Teams player of the year, had three punts in the game, twice pinning the Yellow Jackets at their own 4-yard line.

The Eagles’ offense, expected to have a strong season after returning nine of 11 starters, got to work early when senior Kevin Coy, of Davenport, Florida, broke through the defense and into the end zone from 26 yards out on just the third play of the team’s first possession.

Coy, who rushed for 115 yards in the game, had surpassed the 100-yard rushing mark by the end of the first half, scoring two touchdowns in the first quarter, and adding another in the second.

“I felt great,” Coy said after the game, “but I’ve got to give it up to my O-line, first and foremost. They played great.”

Much is expected of the team’s veteran offensive line this season, and the group certainly impressed in its debut.

“When we talked about keys to the game we wanted to dominate the line of scrimmage and I thought our offensive and defensive lines did that,” Coach Long said.

The effort from the O-line allowed Chadron, which rushed a total of 48 times for 284 yards, establish their running game early.

While Coy led the Eagles’ running corps in yardage on 15 carries, junior Stevann Brown, of Casper, Wyoming, wasn’t far behind with 85 yards on 13 carries.

Turning the duo of returning backs Coy and Brown into a triple threat from the backfield, true freshman Elijah Myles, of Hawthorne, California, was given 12 carries during his first game in Eagles’ uniform, and averaged 6.5 yards-per-carry for a total of 66.

Sophomore quarterback Dalton Holst completed 13 of 19 attempts throwing for a total of 150 yards, including a 28 yard touchdown pass to Brown in the second quarter.

Senior T.D. Stein, of Chadron, was used strategically throughout the game in the quarterback position completing two of four passes. The two completions were touchdowns thrown to sophomore Cole Thurness, of Rapid City, South Dakota, and redshirt freshman Karson Avila, of Denver, Colorado.

Eagles’ junior Tevon Wright, of Miami, led all Chadron receivers with 80 yards on four catches.

CSC junior Tyler ‘Gator’ Lewis, of Arvada, Colorado, led the defense with nine tackles while both junior Tyree Fryar, of Burlington, New Jersey, and true freshman Malik Goss, of Upland California, were credited with eight.

“Malik Goss had a terrific day,” Coach Long said. “He was one of those kids we’ve talked about who can really run and puts himself in good positions.”

Junior Calder Forcella, of Greybull, Wyoming, also made his presence known in the game sacking Black Hills senior quarterback Ryan Hommel twice.

The Eagles will continue their season with a big test this Saturday as they travel to Pueblo, Colorado to face the CSU-Pueblo Thunderwolves who were the 2017 RMAC Co-Champions and ranked first overall in the 2018 RMAC preseason coach’s poll.

The Thunderwolves are coming off a 56-14 thrashing of number four ranked Dixie State this past Saturday in Pueblo.

Eagles get first two wins of young season, go 2-2 at Kansas Classic Brianna Wilson Reporter The CSC volleyball team won its first two games of the season last weekend during the Pittsburg State University Classic in Pittsburg, Kansas. The first victory came against Christian Brothers University, Memphis, Tennessee, the other came in a match with Northwestern Oklahoma State University of Alva.

But the Eagles also suffered two losses at the Classic, one against the Gorillas of Pittsburgh State, the other to the Aggies of Cameron University, Lawton, Oklahoma.

Friday morning, in their first game of the tournament, the Eagles beat the Buccaneers of Christian Brothers in four sets (20-25, 25-22, 20-25, 21-25). But later that afternoon the Pittsburg State Gorillas beat the Eagles in three sets: 22-25, 20-25 and 22-25.

The next morning, however, the Eagles bounced back and beat the Rangers of Northwestern Oklahoma in a match that went all five sets (25-20, 25-21, 17-25, 23-25, 15-5). But later that day, the team suffered its second loss, this time to Cameron University’s Aggies in three sets: 23-25, 18-25 and 21-25.

Freshman Aracely Hernandez, from Greeley, Colorado, and Gardner were the two most scoring hitters for the weekend, logging an average of 13 and 11.5 kills respectively. Setter Madison Webb, senior of Loveland, Colorado, consistently led the team in assists, averaging 37 on the weekend, with her best game against Northwestern Oklahoma State, logging 45.

Defensively, junior libero Ashton Burditt, of Spearfish, South Dakota, averaged the most digs with 19.25 on the weekend and leading the team against the Rangers, Gorillas, and Buccaneers.

Webb led the team with 14 digs against Cameron. Karli Noble, sophomore libero of Cheyenne, consistently followed Burditt and had the next highest average with 10.

The 2-2 split in Pittsburg, sets the Eagles up for their first two Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference tilts against Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado, Friday at 7 p.m. and Adams State University in Alamosa, Colorado, Saturday at 5 p.m.

Hickstein, White, lead Eagles’ golfers Brandon Davenport Sports Editor Led by a duo of freshmen finishing among the top 25, the Chadron State Eagles’ women’s golf team finished sixth of 10 teams during the Samuel Proal Invitational at Pueblo Country Club on Tuesday.

“As a whole we weren’t satisfied,” Coach John Ritzen said of team’s first tournament, “but I don’t think we were disappointed either.”

“After talking to the girls, every one of them felt they left a lot of strokes out on the course and could do better,” Ritzen said, “and that’s really exciting.”

While the Eagles’ golfers aren’t satisfied with their performance, their effort tied the CSC women’s fourth-best two-round team score of 670.

Chadron native Alpine Hickstein led the Eagles after two rounds of golf at the invite, shooting 83-80163 and tying for 20th place with two other golfers.

Fellow Freshman Kayla Elder, of Fort Collins, Colorado, was the group’s third-best finisher shooting a dependable 84-84-168 to tie for 30th. Her five birdies during the two rounds tied her for the most at the invite.

Senior Sam Rahmig was the Eagles’ fourth scorer shooting 89-86175 and placing 41st.

“Sam (Rahmig) struggled a little bit and had a disappointing tournament by her standards,” Ritzen said, “but we know what she can do and we’re not worried about her bouncing back.”

Host team Colorado State-Pueblo took both individual and team honors. As a team, the group was 37-over-par with a score of 613.

Thunderwolves’ senior Orakorn Thirayatorn, of Meang Khonkaen, Thailand, led all golfers shooting 71-78-149.

The Eagles’ golfers won’t see action next week but will resume play Monday, September 17 and 18 at Tiara Rado Golf Club in Grand Junction, Colorado.

In the third, the Chadron women struggled to pull ahead, failing to put any points on the board until Christian Brothers had already logged four. Head Coach Riann Mullis called a timeout when the Eagles were down 5-10 and shortly after that, the Eagles pulled off a five-point rally that put them in the position to tie the score at 12-12. It was neck-and-neck for a few more points until they were tied again at 14-14 and then, with a kill by Chandler Hageman, redshirt sophomore of Chadron, the Eagles pulled ahead for good. They lengthened their lead with a three-point run from 20-17 to 2317 and ended the set soon after, 25-20, forcing a fourth set.

Chadron pulled ahead early in the fourth but started to struggle when the Buccaneers tied them at 10-10. It went back and forth until it was 18-18, when CSC had another one of those timeouts where they rallied to turn the tide at 21-21 with a four-point run to end the set 25-21.

Junior outside hitter Brooke Gardner, of Princeville, Illinois, broke their streak and started one of her own, scoring four points out of CSC’s five-point run, bringing the score to 21-19, but they lost the set 22-25. CSC took an early lead in the second set with a four-point run but lost the advantage when Pitt State evened the score at 12-12 and then pulled ahead with a three-point run and a five-point run that took them to 15-21. Two errors from CSC gave the final points to Pitt State, ending the set 20-25. Neither team held a clear advantage throughout the third set until the teams were tied at 22-22. The Gorillas took the next three points to end the set 22-25 and take the match.

The Eagles took their second win of the season against the previously undefeated Northwestern Oklahoma State Rangers in five sets – the first five-set game the Eagles have won with Mullis as Head Coach.

The Rangers held the first lead, 4-7, but the Eagles rallied for three points to take the lead, 14-12, and again to take the set, 25-20. In the second set, CSC had an impressive eight-point run to give them the upper hand, 16-8. The Eagles brought the

set to match point but were held from the win as the Ranger’s rallied to just a 24-21 deficit, but a service error by Northwestern Oklahoma’s Tobi Barker provided the Eagles the winning point.

The Rangers carried their momentum from the second set to rally in the third and fourth, ending them 17-25 and 23-25 respectively, and forcing a fifth set. Chadron pulled ahead early in the fifth, outscoring the Rangers 7-1, then cruised to 13-5 win.

The Eagles took a 6-3 early lead against Cameron but, after a seven-point rally by the Aggies, they struggled to hold onto a lead. The teams tied at 21-21 and the Aggies pulled ahead with a three-point run that the Eagles couldn’t overcome; they fell 23-25. In the second, CSC made several errors and struggled to make up for them. Cameron widened their lead with a fourpoint and then a three-point run to take the set 18-25. The Eagles fought for the third but the Aggies started to pull away after 13-13. CSC nearly caught up at 18-19, but back to back points by Cameron and then a three-point run brought them to game-point at 19-24. The Eagles held off the final point, logging two more of their own, but lost the set 21-25.

Less than a month after their former coach resigned, and slightly under two weeks since the arrival of his replacement, the Chadron State Eagles’ cross-country team competed at the South Dakota Mines Hardrocker Cross Country Meet this past Saturday, their first meet of the season.

Expected to lead this year’s young group of male runners, Chadron sophomore Sheldon Curley, of Ganado, Arizona, was the highest placing men’s runner, taking seventh overall with a time of 27 minutes, 45.3 seconds.

Speaking prior to the season, Curley felt good about the upcoming season despite the late coaching change.

“I feel really good health-wise, physically and mentally,” Curley said. “I feel like I’m going strong into the season. I’m confident in my performance and coach leading us.

I honestly have a lot of faith in (Coach Scott Foley) and in the team, that he can help us take it one day at a time, one practice at a time to get to the top eventually. If not this year, I see it in the future with this group.”

At the Hardrocker meet Curley was joined in the top 10 by

freshman teammate Michael Jaso, of Yuma, Arizona, who finished in 28 minutes, 15.5 seconds.

Also expected to be a leader among Chadron’s runners this season is Alyse Henry, of Rock Springs, Wyoming, who finished as the leading Eagles’ woman in 11th place with a time of 21 minutes, 11.6 seconds on the 5-kilometer course.

Fellow Eagles’ junior Savannah Sibaugh, of Upton, Wyoming, who Henry lists among teammates she expects to have a good season, finished in 21 minutes, 11.6 seconds, good for 13th place.

A Chadron pack of sophomores Catherine Orban, of Osage, Wyoming; Madison Watson, of Mitchell; Emma Willadsen, of Eaton, Colorado, and freshman Sydney Settles, of Lincoln, placed 16th through 19th.

Black Hills State took top honors in both men’s and women’s team scoring taking the top two individual places in the men’s run and top six places in the women’s run.

The Chadron women were second only to Black Hills State in team scoring. Montana State-Billings was third and South Dakota Mines was fourth.

Behind Black Hills State in team scoring was South Dakota Mines, Montana State-Billings, and Chadron State.

Next up for the Eagles’ runners is Chadron’s home meet Saturday.

Students mingled while mixing ice cream flavors during the Ice Cream and Milkshake Social at Edna Work Hall last Friday.

RA Clinton Albertus, 25, senior of Willemstad, Curaçao, hosted the event and planned on around 30 students attending the social.

To his surprise, Albertus and other RAs dished out ice cream to 71 students, more than double the planned amount.

“I was really happy with the turnout,” Albertus said.

Along with eating ice cream and interacting with other students from across campus, event-goers also played pool and ping pong in the dorm lobby.

‘Charmed’ characters keep audiences hooked Brianna Wilson Reporter Set aside the first season’s cheesy plot points, the turn-of-the-century questionable graphics and the last season’s poor choices, and “Charmed” is actually a really good show.

The characters are well fleshed out, with hopes and dreams and fears that, despite the constant demon attacks, the audience can still relate to.

I’m not going to lie, though. It can be hard to get into.

The first few episodes, it’s hard to get past the sub-par graphics, questionable acting and

the cheesy storyline.

Despite those, something made me hang on long enough to get caught up in the characters’ lives.

I’m not doing a good job at conveying how great this show is. So, let me try this again.

I think, more than anything, it’s the characters that make this show so amazing in the start.

The plot and the storyline leave something to be desired, it’s true. But the characters, not their actors and actresses, make this show worth watching.

“Charmed” tells the story of three sisters in San Francisco who inherit their family’s manor after their grandmother passes away.

They were never particularly close, but once they discover that they’re all witches, and they were born that way, they also discover a bond that runs deeper than their past differences.

From there, they are thrown into a life of fighting demons and warlocks as the legendary Charmed Ones, a force of good so great that they instantly become a target for all things evil looking to move up in the underworld hierarchy.

The first season is questionable. I’ve said that more than once.

But, if you can get past it, things really pick up by the second and third seasons, and you might just find yourself hooked.

After you get the first season out of the way, the storyline really starts to take off and the writers start to plan bigger than just the next 40 minutes of screen time.

By the fourth and fifth seasons, the writers have stretched the storyline.

Each individual episode still has its own plot and story, of course, but they all fit as pieces of the puzzle into the overarching story.

By then, you’re hooked on the characters.

You have been with them for so long and through so much, changes in their lives not only as witches but as women, you’re invested.

Isn’t that what makes any good story?

If the writers can get you invested in what happens to the characters, you’re basically a goner.

And that’s what they did here.

While there are lots of characters worth mentioning throughout the show, I think that Piper and Phoebe, played by Holly Marie-Combs and Alyssa Milano, respectively, deserve specific mentioning considering how crucial they are to the story as two of the three sisters that make up the Charmed Ones.

There’s only so much I can say without throwing in a spoiler or two, but I think these two characters and the women that play them deserve special recognition because of just how relatable they are throughout the eight seasons that “Charmed” is made of.

Not only are their personalities relatable on a human form – completely throw aside the fact that they have special powers and they are still the same characters.

Their personalities don’t change just because they’re witches. But the way they react to the situations they come in contact with as women, in their love and professional lives, are relatable as well.

They handle the situations as women more often than as witches. And I think this is what makes all the difference in how relatable they are as characters.

Limited-edition Cheerios bring flavor to cereal aisles Krystal Kesselring Co-Editor Boots, scarves, the changing leaves, and … pumpkin spice Cheerios?

Each September, as I throw my shorts and tank tops into the bottom of the hamper and break out my endless supply of jeans, tights, scarves and knee-high boots, it never ceases to amaze me how quickly companies begin to roll out pumpkin-spiced everything.

Before the first leaves begin to fall, coffee shops start mixing in the pumpkin puree, nutmeg and cloves.

The smell of pumpkin spice fills bakeries and cafes as bakers crank out batch after batch of pumpkin muffins, cupcakes and pies.

Even the aisles of grocery stores are adorned in orange, the cereal aisle in particular.

With the popularity of pumpkin spice growing so immensely, I have become hesitant when it comes to trying certain pumpkin flavored creations.

While I do enjoy a good pumpkin spice latte, some pumpkin spice treats can be a bit overwhelming or just plain odd tasting.

The other day, I got a call from my mom.

She had just picked up a limited-edition box of Pumpkin Spice Cheerios at her local grocery store in Georgia. She ate two full bowls when she got home, and immediately called me to rave about them.

I trust my mother with almost everything, but I knew I had to try these Cheerios myself.

After a week of searching and three trips to Walmart throughout the week, they finally appeared on the top shelf of the cereal aisle, four rows across.

I wasn’t sure what to expect from the iconic cereal brand. I like honey nut cheerios, but lately Cheerios has been experimenting with the flavors and most of them don’t sound very appetizing.

With my milk, bowl and spoon ready, I opened the box and was immediately hit by the aroma of cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg.

They definitely seemed to have more spice than pumpkin. I filled my bowl with Cheerios and milk, and dug right in.

Much to my surprise, the pumpkin spice flavor was subtle. I was expecting an overwhelming jolt of super sweet artificial pump-

kin flavoring smothered by spices.

Instead, I was surprised with a perfect balance of pumpkin and complimenting spices. I was engulfed by the cool, calm feelings of fall.

These Limited Edition Pumpkin Spice Cheerios are more than just a delicious fall breakfast cereal. They are made with whole grain oats, real pumpkin puree, cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg.

After I finished the last bite, I was then rewarded with another little pumpkin spice treat.

My favorite part of any bowl of cereal is drinking the milk when all the cereal is gone, and this pumpkin spiced milk is by far the best.
