Clark is now employed as an office assistant with Joel Hyer, dean of the School of B.E.A.M.S.S., and Jordan is a reporter with the Douglas (Wyoming) Budget.

In his first year as Sports Editor Preston Goehring, sophomore of Carpenter, Wyoming, earned two second-place awards and a thirdplace award in the design categories, and two honorable mentions in Sports Reporting.

Another newcomer, first-year News Editor Justine Stone, sophomore of Maywood, captured two second-place awards in design – one for infographics and one for inside-page design.

Lifestyles Editor Sarah Townsend, senior of Douglas, Wyoming, also brought home multiple awards. Townsend took second in headline writing and two-page, special-spread design and earned an honorable mention in both newspaper feature writing and use of a digital medium for a public service.

Melanie Nelson, junior of Belle Fourche, South Dakota, took second and earned an honorable mention in News Writing.

Freshman Photo Editor Sara Tweet, of Crawford, took two third-place awards, one in the News Photograph category, the other in the Feature Photograph category. Her predecessor, former Photo Editor Teri Robinson, who graduated in December 2015, took first and earned an honorable mention in the Feature Photograph category. Robinson, a native of Alliance, is now employed as a copy editor at The Star-Herald, Scottsbluff.

The Eagle’s student staff conjured its own version of football’s “Pic-6” when it scored its sixth straight “Best in Overall Excellence” title in the Nebraska Collegiate Media Association’s annual Golden Leaf Awards, presented Saturday, this year, at Doane College, Crete.

The Eagle’s website, csceagle. com, kept in stride with the newspaper and captured its second straight “Excellence in Digital Medium,” award the NCMA’s highest honor in its digital medium division. See related story at csceagle.com.

The Eagle staff earned awards in 17 of 19 individual categories, and scored points in 15 of 19 categories en route to earning 49 points and its sixth consecutive “Best in Overall Excellence” title.

“This year we were all a little scared. We knew that Doane was improving and we knew the competition would be tough,” said Managing Editor Jordyn Hulinsky, junior of St. Paul.

“It’s a lot of pressure when you’re on top for this long to remain on top. But the staff is always working as hard as it can, and I couldn’t be more proud of the accomplishment.”

The newspaper competition is broken into 19 individual categories covering writing and visual presentation, such as design and photography. Eligible entries must have been published between March 1, 2015, and Feb. 29 this year. All NCMA newspapers may submit no more than five entries per category; individual students may enter no more than two pieces per category.

Students from the NCMA’s seven member schools who competed this year earned points for their respective newspapers for placing first (5 points), second (3 points) or third

(1 point) in each of those 19 categories. The points each student earns are totaled to determine which newspaper earns the “Best in Overall Excellence” title. The NCMA awards no more than two honorable mentions per category. Honorable mentions do not earn points.

Eleven different student journalists from The Eagle scored points across 14 categories, while the “staff ” garnered points in three other categories.

The Eagle earned three firstplace awards, worth 15 points; eight second places, worth 24 points; and 10 third places, worth 10 points; for a cumulative score of 49 points.

That total is 28 points lower than what the staff accrued in 2015, when it scored a staff-high 77 points to capture its fifth “Best in Overall Excellence” title. The Eagle also earned 10 honorable mentions.

“That’s a significant drop in the total points we scored,” The Eagle Adviser Michael D. Kennedy said.

“But I think it is important to note our consistency in scoring across all categories.”

Citing NCMA records, Kennedy noted that when the staff won its first best overall title back in 2011, the students did it on the strength of their visual skills in photojournalism and design. He said he then focused on improving reporting and writing, not just among The Eagle staff, but in the classrooms, too.

“Since then we have scored consistently across all three areas— writing, photo and design,” he said.

The NCMA’s newspaper division has eight writing categories and 11 visual categories. Kennedy said The Eagle staff submitted entries in seven of the eight writing categories, earned awards in all seven, but scored in only five. On the visual side, the staff entered 10 of 11 cat-

New board starts term 12 students offer solutions to improve Book Ends Coffee Shop Justine Stone News Editor The 2016-17 school year CAB executive board members were sworn in at the meeting Tuesday.

CAB allocated no more than $300 to provide pizza and drinks for next week’s CAB meeting.

Collegiate Farm Bureau club was approved as a CAB affiliated club.

CAB representatives narrowed down next year’s Homecoming theme ideas down to Eagle Days, Escape from Alcatraz, and Identity Crisis to send to the Homecoming committee. A survey will be sent to students to see their opinions of the topics.

The next signing day is April 29. If you would like to volunteer, contact Internships and Career Services Director Deena Kennell.

The next Spring Daze volunteer meeting is at 6 p.m. today. The next Spring Daze club meeting is at 7 p.m.

Student Affairs Senior Director Pat Beu reminded CAB representatives that there are services available for students who are dealing with things like depression.

Jordyn Hulinsky Managing Editor After standing outside the door and stopping students and asking them to come into the Bordeaux Room, even if it’s “just for a minute,” senators hosted an open forum with 12 students to discuss changes to the Book Ends Coffee Shop in the Reta E. King Library.

Throughout the 30-minute forum, 12 students came in and out to offer their input on possible changes to the coffee shop.

Senate allocated $10,000 Monday to support the coffee shop. This will help cover a third of the cost that is split with the vice presidents and the revenue bond.

Right now the coffee shop is losing about $26,000 a year, according to Senate President Katrina Hurley and Dale Grant, vice president of finance and administration. The vice presi-

dents are currently paying the loss.

The coffee shop only gains profit from cash or card customers. Senate is hoping that customers who have Eagle Bucks will become devoted customers and continue coming back to the shop when they run out of Eagle Bucks and pay with cash.

Senate will pay the $10,000 for the first year and see it increases the coffee shop’s profit. After the year, Senate will revaluate and will decide if they want to fund the shop another year.

Senate can offer solutions to improve the shop with the allocation.

Senate was looking for student input on the changes.

Many students who attended the forum supported the suggestion of offering smoothies as a drink options. There were also complaints about the frappes not being consistent depending on the employee making the drinks.

Hurley suggested making the cof-

fee shop into a barista style. Students seemed to support the suggestion.

Hurley said if the shop was made into a barista style, there would have to be two employees working at the shop at once, instead of just one like there is now.

There would also have to be some renovations done to change the dynamic of the shop. There would have to be a glass countertop put in for food prep.

Students also suggested opening the shop earlier as there are often times people in the library for study hall as early at 7 a.m. Right now, the shop opens at 8 a.m.

Students came to the conclusion that advertising and marketing are a problem for the shop. There was a suggestion to move the coffee menu to a better location. Some students asked for sodas in the shop. They suggested maybe offering Italian cream sodas or bottled sodas.

Senate allocates $204K to clubs for next year’s activities Student Senate allocated $26,915.95 less than the original requested funds from clubs Preston Goehring Sports Editor Senate allocated the recommended $204,503.23 to clubs during Monday’s meeting. The original amount requested from clubs on campus was $231,419.18 but the Activity Fee Board made recommendations to cut several club budgets. There were 39 club budgets that were unanimously passed without objections.

Senators disagreed with the cuts for the following clubs: Zeta Alpha Kappa, Eagle Dance, Pre Vet, Native American club, and Social Science club. Senator Chelsea Holt argued that Zeta Alpha Kappa’s budget should not have been cut for advertising in The Eagle.

“The Eagle is something that circulates through campus,” Senator Holt said. “So to me it would make sense to advertise through The Eagle. It’s a campus newspaper.”

Senator Adviser Deena Kennell responded by saying that AFB is not discouraging students from advertising in The Eagle, but rather suggests a consistent standard to advertise and to “be more efficient with the money allocated.”

After several questions were raised regarding the way the cuts were described, AFB Co-Chair Molly O’Connell said that AFB set a standard of feasibility in a subjective way. Kennell then urged senators to be

more productive with their discussion.

After more discussion, an amendment to Zeta Alpha Kappa’s budget to add $150 for “swag” items failed 8-4 with three senators abstaining. A total budget of 3,708.50 was passed 11-1 with three senators abstaining.

The Nest’s budget was cut because the calculations that AFB made did not add up to the full $17,000 that the club requested.

AFB recommended an amount of $13,000 because they did not specify where the extra $4,000 came from.

The budget for Eagle Dance was cut because AFB did not see the club growing as large as projected. The club was seeking money for new dance shoes and pants. AFB thought that the uniforms could be reused so they recommended cutting half of the budget for those items.

The Pre Vet club budget was cut by $160.

The club had projected they needed five hotel rooms for a trip to Lincoln. However, the AFB found that the club could double-up on rooms and only needed four. A budget of $2,466 was passed unanimously.

The Native American club’s request for money for sweatshirts and T-shirts was cut in half. AFB allocated money to other clubs for T-shirts and found it unnecessary to have both. They recommended that if the club wanted sweatshirts, the members could pay half of the cost out of pocket.

“We are recommending that if they wanted it bad enough, they would work for it themselves,” O’Connell said.

Senator Stephanie Alfred also stated that the club receives money from local tribes. Gavan Archibald, vice president of finance, said that the club received money from the diversity committee as well.

“I totally get the concept of marketing and advertising for recruiting,” Kennell said. “But I don’t get why any club would expect that the student body pay for multiple clothing items for marketing. This kind of thing I think is crazy.”

The Native American club also did not have any fundraisers planned and asked for all the money come from Senate. Senate allocated $7,780.32 with a vote of 13-1.

Senate Adviser Susan Schaeffer then expressed concerns that senators were being too “nit-picky” when looking over budgets.

Social Science club was allocated $8,138.18 by unanimous decision.

Suggestions for improvements to

AFB next year should be emailed to afb@ csc.edu. After the clubs’ allocations, Senator Tileen Sullivan reminded senators that senators select people to the AFB committee and made the challenge to senators to be a part of the board if they don’t agree with the recommendations.

Senator Curtis Stevens disagreed saying, the point of a committee is to work out the hard work and then bring its work to the larger group, whose duty still is to make sure student fee money is being used for our constituents.

Clark reiterated Stevens statements saying Senate does have an invested interest in looking at the things the subcommittee of Senate is doing and recommending.

Senate allocated $20,000 for speakers to come to campus during the 2016-17 academic year. Any unused money can be rolled over into the fall.

Senate approved a $10,000 allocation to invest in Book Ends Coffee Shop in the Reta E. King Library. A draft of Senate’s approval of the investments will be presented to the presidential council. A copy of the draft can be found on csceagle.com No more than $2,000 was allocated to a calendar app. The total cost of the app is $6,000, with money coming from Danielle Lecher for the Week of Welcome, the NPAC’s budget, and from RLA. That money pays for a one-year contract that will have to be renewed. Chris Green, director of student affairs, student activities and recreation, added that the cost can be spread around in the future.

Senator Tate Jensen sent a letter of resignation to Senate. Jensen was absent at the meeting and according to Chief Justice Coy Clark, it was his fourth unexcused absence.

“I simply resigned because I felt I could not give enough of myself to Senate,” Jensen said. “With personal issues and a busy work schedule, I wanted to resign before they (Senate) pushed articles of impeachment again.”

Senate had $6,292.87 in unallocated funds at the beginning of the meeting. Voting for next year’s Senate will close at noon today.

An open forum to discuss themes for the Week of Welcome and to discuss improvements to the basement lounge of the Library will be at 6 p.m. today.

Adviser Mathew Brust wanted to remind students to register for fall classes and that it is not too late to add a summer course. Kennell added that it is not too late for a summer internship either.

Still no numbers: what is Senate hiding?

Person One: “Chadron State won the basketball game last night.”

Person Two: “What was the score?”

Person One: “Oh, I can’t tell you. If I do, it might hurt the other team’s feelings.”

This scenario is an extreme example of the way we see Senate elections. For years, The Eagle has been asking the executive body of Senate to release the numbers of votes in the Student Senate elections. Year after year, those running for election claim they will be transparent, and they want better working relations with all parts of the college, and year after year, our requests for numbers are denied.

Senators, and those in executive power, have cited the fact that there is nothing forcing them to release the numbers. But our question is and always has been, why refuse to disclose the numbers? What is Senate trying to hide?

Last week, we asked senators in our Man on the Street question, “What are your thoughts on Senate not releasing Senate election numbers in past elections?”

Three senators said forthright they think the numbers should be released; one said he never thought about it, could see the value in releasing, and the value in not; and one senator said,

“A loss is a loss so why would it matter by how much.” There are two comments we would like to address.

The first being the senators who mentioned that they think the reason for not releasing the numbers in the past was because it might hurt the other candidate’s feelings.

Bogus.

College is a time to grow, to learn, and to make ourselves better. We are supposed to be pushed and questioned and go through tough situations.

We should be asked to act like adults.

“You are adults and we are not going to treat you like any less than adults,” Senate Adviser Susan Schaeffer said to the senators at the Oct. 12, 2015, Senate meeting.

But, Senate is worried about hurting each other’s feelings when they lose an election. Are we the only ones seeing the hypocrisy here?

The second thing we want to address is the thought that a loss is just a loss, so it doesn’t matter. Losing by 200 and losing by 2 is a big difference in all kinds of competitions. See the aforementioned basketball scenario.

Even with this bylaw in place, we still have the same question, what are you hiding? What’s the reason behind this bylaw?

For a bylaw to be changed, it has to be introduced to Senate with three senators’ signatures.

Then it will be voted on and can be approved by two-thirds vote.

Three of five senators we asked last week thought that the numbers should be released.

You only need three senators to introduce a change to the bylaw. So now we ask the senators to bring the action behind the talk, stand by what you said, and change the bylaw. Stop hiding behind the bylaw, stop worrying about hurting feelings, and start releasing the numbers.

This Senate has one meeting left in this semester; there is still time to make a change and there’s still time for the executive board to step up and actually act transparent. The Eagle asks, for another year, that the Senate election numbers be released to the student body.

Mississippi law still leaves room for improvement Sarah Townsend Lifestyles Editor Near the end of March, a federal judge ruled that Mississippi’s ban on same-sex couples adopting children is unconstitutional. This made it legal for samesex couples to adopt children in all 50 states. According to a Huffington Post article by Mollie Reilly, deputy politics editor, “U.S. District Judge Daniel Jordan issued a preliminary injunction against the ban, citing the Supreme Court’s decision legalizing same-sex marriage nationwide last summer. The injunction blocks Mississippi from enforcing its 16-year-old anti-gay adoption law.”

For the past 16 years the state has enforced the antigay adoption law, but last year a challenge was filed by four same-sex couples to start the change of this law.

These parents were backed by the Campaign for Southern Equality and the Family Equality Council.

This change is huge for the adoption community and means that the opportunities for adoptable children, not only in Mississippi, but in other states as well.

Mississippi remained the lone state to holdout until the ruling in March. However, there are some states that still have some restrictions on same-sex couples fostering children, along with some other obstructions for them.

Children in the adoption and foster care system are desperately in need of adoptive and foster homes, and

this ruling is a step in the right d i re c t i o n .

Surprisingly this law was adopted in just 2000, showing how far our society has come in 16 years. While it did take quite a while, the change is welcomed by the LGBT community as well as much of the adoption community. Even the former governor of Mississippi who signed the adoption bill into law told The Huffington Post in 2013 that he supported overturning the bill.

The law reads, “Adoption by couples of the same gender is prohibited,” and simply that. The law was similar to those that were also overturned in other states, including Alabama, Florida, Nebraska and Michigan.

This ruling is important not only for the benefits it will have for adoptable children, but because it shows that we are progressing as a society, slowly. This ruling follows the passing of a “religious freedom” bill that gives businesses the right to deny service to LGBT people. Mississippi is in a tug of war; moving one step forward, but two steps back.

Living in a country such as ours it is easy to forget that there are places in the world where sex slavery and bought marriages exist.

The victims of these crimes are often drugged and kidnapped from their homes, some victims being as young

The law says it protects from people claiming discrimination against anyone “who thinks that marriage is between only one man and one woman, that sexual relations are reserved solely for marriage, and that the terms male and female pertain only to a person’s genetics and anatomy at birth.”

According to this law, religious organizations will be able to deny LGBT people marriage, adoption and foster care services; refuse to employ them, fire them, and possibly not let them rent or sell them property among other services.

The law is basically protecting those who want to discriminate against or not allow LGBT individuals to use or receive certain services because their religion does not align with the lifestyle of LGBT individuals.

Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant signed the bill against the urgings of protester and cries about its discriminatory nature from gay rights groups and state businesses, according to a CNN article.

The law may not be discriminatory in itself, however, it seems to enable discriminatory behavior among religious groups.

Changes in Mississippi seem to be moving in a right direction in terms of allowing for the adoption of children by same-sex couples, but has absolutely taken a step backward in other realms. In an ideal world, there would be no discrimination and governments would not support discriminatory behaviors, but we still have a long way to go until we reach this goal.

In China, there is a huge gender differential between men and women, thus men in China are desperate for women for brides. These kidnapped brides often attempt to escape and, should they prove to be too much of a hassle to the suitor, are returned to the slave network and re-sold into another family.

Human trafficking has become one of the largest illegal trades in the world; it has even surpassed the illegal selling of arms. Victims are kept in constant fear, endure horrendous abuse, and are often subjected to substances and a

consistent state of being high.

Even in the United States up to 300,000 people under the age of 18 are lured into illegal sex trafficking a year.

The best thing we can do to help is to spread awareness to impoverished and isolated rural regions, and to recognize the signs of victims: malnutrition, dehydration, bruises and broken bones, psychological disorders, or other signs of sexual abuse and immediately report them to the authorities.

In 2016, the sale of humans as a slave under any circumstances is absolutely irreprehensible.

Women’s rodeo team wins by 175 points in Casper Janelle Kesterson Opinion Editor The Chadron State cowgirls stepped up their game this weekend at the Casper College rodeo, finishing the weekend with 385 points, 175 more than runner-up Laramie County Community College, Cheyenne, Wyoming.

All-around cowgirl Shelby Winchell, graduate student of Scottsbluff, and breakaway roping champion Jessie Miller, graduate student of Woodland Park, Colorado, led the Eagles.

Winchell finished second in goat tying and third in breakaway roping to boost her to the top of the women’s competition. She won the first round of goat tying in 8 seconds and tied for second and third in the second go with a time of 8.1. She finished in a four-way tie in the first round of breakaway roping in 3.2 and finished second in the finals in 3.6, placing her third overall.

With only one rodeo remaining in the circuit, Winchell has a 550-point lead in the goat tying standings.

round of breakaway roping in 2.9 and she won the final go in 3.2, putting her first in the average.

Miller had not placed at any of the first seven rodeos of the season until she was runner-up last week at Colorado State University. That placing and her victory this weekend have put her third in the regional standings, and just 13 points away from second place.

Brandi Cwach, sophomore of Geddes, South Dakota, was fourth in the goat tying with runs of 8.1 and 8.4; and Elsie Fortune, junior of Interior, South Dakota, was second in the long go of breakaway roping in 2.6, but missed her calf in the short go.

The CSC cowboys also competed well in Casper, placing at least one in every event except for tie down roping.

Cordale Martin, junior of Panhandle, Texas, won the bull riding, and Grady Egly, freshman of Oelrichs, South Dakota, was a member of the second place team roping entry.

Martin had the high score in the first round of the bull riding with 76 points. Every contestant in the final round was bucked off, leaving Martin as the victor.

Egly transferred to Chadron State at the beginning of the second semester and was not eligible to compete until the Casper rodeo. He roped with Coralee Spratt, of Gillette, Wyoming, in the team roping. The pair was 10th in the first go-round with a time of 9.5 and second in the short go in 7.6. They finished second in the average.

“A lot of rodeo is a mental game so I have been trying to maintain a positive attitude whether I am having a great practice or just an alright one,” Egly said. “I’m really focusing on calf roping and steer wrestling this week since I didn’t make it back to the short round in those.”

Also for CSC, Nate McFadden, graduate student of Elsmere, placed second in the bareback riding averages with a 67-point ride in the long go and an 82-point ride in the short go. McFadden has earned points at each of the nine rodeos in the region this season, and is in second place in the Central Rocky Mountain Regional Standings going into the last rodeo of the season.

Colby Anders, junior of Bayard, placed sixth in the steer wrestling with two 6.5 runs; Dakota Rice, freshman of Kellogg, Idaho, was fifth in the bull riding; and Lathan Lauing, freshman of Hot Springs, South Dakota, along with partner Lane Day, senior of Bartlett, made the team roping finals with an 8-second run, but failed to catch in the short go.

Martin and Egly were not among the cowboys on CSC’s official team at Casper, so the CSC cowboys finished with 183 points, their lowest of the year. The last rodeo in the circuit is April 29-May 1 at the University of Wyoming, Laramie. The Chadron State men have a lead of more than 1,000 points heading into Laramie.

The top three men’s and women’s teams and individuals in each event at the end of the season will qualify for the National College Finals Rodeo, Casper, Wyoming, in June.

Bozner reached an automatic qualifying mark in the women’s heptathlon at the Mt. SAC Relays in Azusa, California. She placed 10th out of 49 entries with 5,313 points.

Simpson placed third in the elite division of the Mt. SAC relays. He reached a distance of 25 feet, 9 1/2 inches, automatically qualifying for nationals.

Maka Daysh, sophomore of Tauranga, New Zealand, is leaving Chadron State and the women’s basketball team after competition for two years. Daysh was the leading scorer and rebounder both years at CSC. She totaled 260 points her freshman year and 413 points her sophomore year. She led with 130 total rebounds in 2014-15 and 253 total in 2015-16.

She also marked the most offensive, 90, and defensive, 163, this season.

She also led the RMAC in rebounding with an average of 9.7 per game. She was third in the RMAC with 15.9 points per game, and fourth with a 54 percent field goal percentage. She’s ranked 40th in NCAA D-II for her rebounds per game.

She was named to the Omaha World-Herald’s All-Nebraska Division II Women’s First Team Monday.

But, Daysh has decided to move on from Chadron State.

“My decision (to leave) was really made after Coach (Tim Connealy) was told his contract wasn’t being renewed,” Daysh said. “I respected him a lot as a coach and I couldn’t see myself playing under a new one.”

Daysh said she chose Chadron instead of other schools that made offers because of Connealy.

The 20-year-old studying sports management and recreation major started her basketball career in primary school in Tauranga. She started playing for New Zealand at age 16.

“I started playing because in primary school, they said I was super tall and should give it a go,” Daysh said.

Soccer, cricket, rugby, and track and field are all listed next to basketball on her resume.

After playing for New Zealand, Daysh realized she could progress more into basketball and set a goal to play NCAA basketball.

“I had a few major offers, but Chadron spoke out to me because of Coach Connealy,” Daysh said. “He was so nice and caring and super genuine. He would call and talk to my family two or three times a week. He was just willing to help with anything.”

Daysh excelled on the court for the Eagles, posting 13 double-doubles in her two years as an Eagle. Her first double-double as an Eagle came on Feb. 13, 2015, against Colorado Christian University at the Chicoine Events Center.

She ranks 21st in NCAA D-II with her total double-doubles. She started in 46 of her 52 games and averaged 49.8 percent from the field and 12.95 points per game. She only turned over the ball an average of 2.3 times per game.

Daysh wore number 44 for Chadron State and said her host mom, Mary Landen, wore 44 when she played college basketball. Landen is Coach Connealy’s sister.

Daysh was put in touch with the Landen’s through Connealy because she was homesick at the beginning of her freshman year.

“I was homesick to the point of going home, and this was like a week into school,” Daysh said. “(Connealy) asked if I would be interested in a family, and I said sure, and that’s how it all started.”

Daysh pulls inspiration to play from so nice and caring and her family back home, especially her grandparents.

“They own a farm back in New Zealand super genuine. He was and just work so hard and are so down to earth and loved by so many people,” Daysh just willing to help with said. “They have taught me to work hard for anything I want and no matter how big time you get, just remain humble. I also play for anything. my family because if it wasn’t for them, I wouldn’t have had as much success as I have.”

Ange played basketball and wore number 14 when she was younger. Daysh said she wore number 14 in high school and for New Zealand.

Daysh has one 18-year-old sister, Tamara, who attends junior college in New Zealand. She also had twin brothers who passed away.

“Before every game, I did two fist pumps for them,” Daysh said.

With a decade of basketball under her belt, Daysh said after she returns home to New Zealand, she will continue playing basketball for a women’s team at home and will try to earn a spot on the Tall Ferns, which is the elite women’s New Zealand team.

Daysh is going home to join the police force.

“It’s a 12-week academy and then out in placement for two years,” Daysh said. “I’ll then move into youth aid working with troubled kids in schools.”

Daysh came to the United States with eight years of basketball experience, two parents, and three siblings. Daysh may be leaving CSC and the United States, but she’ll be leaving the States with two more years of basketball, two more parents, and four more siblings.

Daysh came and improved Chadron State’s basketball team. The team is losing an impressive force on the court, but now Daysh will take her determination and drive back to New Zealand to be a force for the country.

Track athletes hit 53 season-best marks William McLaughlin Reporter

The 2016 outdoor season continues to be a remarkable one for the Chadron State track and field team as they competed at three big meets in California: the Mt. SAC Relays, Azusa; the Brian Clay Invitational, Azusa; and the Long Beach State Invitational, Long Beach.

The Eagles broke eight school records and hit a combined 53 season-best marks.

The women led the way for the Eagles breaking six of the eight records set during their trip. CSC’s first day of competition on Thursday, started with the heptathlon. Shelby Bozner, senior of Rock Springs, Wyoming, scored 5,313 points placing 10th among 49 entries at Mt. SAC. Bozner’s point total is well above the automatic qualifying standard of 5,180 for the D-II Outdoor National Track and Field Championships in May. Bozner hit personal bests in four of the seven heptathlon events.

Two other Eagles competed in the heptathlon, Kelsy Wood, junior of

Hemingford, and Sami Schmit, senior of Cody; placing 29th and 32nd, respectively. Wood and Schmit’s point totals of 4,690 and 4,624, respectively, easily exceed the provisional qualifying standard of 4,442.

Three school records fell for CSC at the Brian Clay Invitational on Friday.

Nicky Banzhaf, sophomore of Chadron, shined yet again in the 5,000-meter race running 17 minutes, 42.49 seconds, taking nearly 13 seconds off the former record she set last year.

The next two records to fall came from seniors. For the women, Tiffany Thomas, senior of Kingston, Jamaica, finished ninth in the 400 running 55.45, nearly a second faster than her previous record of 56.27, which she set earlier this outdoor season.

On the men’s side, Zerek Jones, senior of La Junta, Colorado, placed 23rd in 800, running 1:52.25. Jones’ time broke a 25-year-old CSC record set in 1991 by former Eagle Scott Pettit.

Late Friday evening, a fourth record fell for CSC, but at Mt. SAC. The women’s 4x400 relay ran 3:48.59 placing sixth in their division and taking exactly one

second off the record set a season ago.

The team consisted of Bozner, Schmit, Nikki Glasson, senior of Wheatland, Wyoming; and Thomas, in that order.

CSC also had a number of high finishes and season bests at Brian Clay.

Stachia Reuwsaat, junior of Black Hawk, South Dakota, finished third in long jump with a leap of 19 feet, 6 1/4 inches.

Reuwsaat’s mark was 2-1/2 inches away from first place.

“We are having a great (outdoor) season,” Head Track and Field Coach Brad Gamble said. “This trip helped a lot of our athletes and we hope to carry this momentum and success into the conference meet in a few weeks.”

On the men’s side, distance and throws excelled. In the 5,000, Alejandro Garcia, senior of Pine Bluffs, Wyoming, clocked in at 15:03.43, finishing 17th among 24 runners. Garcia’s time is the second fastest all-time in program history.

The Chadron State golf team traveled to Avondale, Arizona, this weekend to compete in the RMAC Championships at Coldwater G.C. and conclude its season.

Day one was a productive one for the Eagles, as the team’s two seniors showed up to play. Emma Harris, senior of Wahoo, swung for a firstround 76, becoming just the fifth golfer in CSC history to earn that score or better in an 18-hole round. Harris led the Eagles, tying for an eighth place individual finish and steering the team to a seventh place mark. Schuyler Wetzel, senior of Hot Springs, South Dakota, also stood out, tying her career low for a round.

The team’s score of 322 in the first

round was good enough for a school record, breaking the previous record of 323, set in 2007.

On day two, Wetzel showed up again, going for two straight sub-80 rounds to lead the Eagles (322-327649) as they went on to shatter last year’s school record of 677. Individually, Wetzel (77-78-155) finished tied for 15th of 64 golfers, coming within two strokes of the individual team record of 153.

The Eagles finished tied for eighth in the team standings, marking this as the first time they have finished in front of four other teams in this tournament since the 2007-2008 season.

Wetzel’s two-round 155 was a personal best, as were the marks of Harris (76-84-160), who placed 29th, and Mikayla Gallagher (90-80-170), sophomore of Lead, South Dakota, who

tied for 44th. Gallagher tied for 11th in the field with four birdies.

“The first day was not my best, but I knew I could play the course well, and I went into the second day with the attitude that it was the last meet of the season and I needed to play to the best of my ability,” Gallagher said. “I ended my last two holes with birdies, so I was happy with my performance and more specifically my finish.”

Sam Rahmig, freshman of Gering, came within one stroke of her personal best, shooting a two-round 170 to tie for 44th. Haynes placed 51st with a score of 173.

“After the first day we realized we were on track to beat not one school record, but two,” Gallagher said.

“These factors, in addition to playing the same course last year, all had an effect.”

CSC’s final day of competition at the Long Beach State Invitational, had more highlights and records fall. In the final event of the day, women’s pole vault, Angelique Urenda, junior of Pueblo, Colorado, cleared 12- 1/2 to win her heat and becoming the first CSC female to clear 12 feet in pole vault. Urenda now owns both the indoor and outdoor record in the event.

Jones also lowered his own record in the 800 running 1:50.3 to finish sixth among 100 entries. Damarcus Simpson, sophomore of Lafayette, Georgia, placed third in the elite section of long jump at Mt. SAC leaping 25-9 1/2.

Simpson’s mark currently leads all of D-II outdoors in long jump and is and automatic qualifying mark for Outdoor Nationals in May. The Eagles will travel to Golden, Colorado for the Colorado School of Mines Pre-Conference Invitational this weekend before the RMAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships on May 6-8.

Reporter CSC students got a chance, Thursday, April 14, to get in touch with their artistic sides. Late Night at The Pit sponsored an arts and crafts night which gave students the chance to paint on things like snow globes, canvases and coffee mugs. The event was far different from the usual dance and was meant to appeal to a different group of students to help them feel involved on campus. With no music being played, it made the event a good way for students to relax as finals approach rapidly. The event started at 9 p.m. and ended around midnight and had students there throughout the duration.

“It’s nice to mix it up sometimes and do something that might appeal to a different group of people on campus,” The Pit staff member, Savannah Hurtado, sophomore of Denver, said.

The event, however, did offer prizes to entice more students to come and once they got there they were offered food and refreshments in case they were hungry.

“It’s one of our smaller events but we were very excited about our turnout and it was an overall fun event,” another staff member, Savannah Menghini, sophomore of Scottsbluff said.

The event had around 30 people show up even though Thursday had bad weather, which may have deterred some students from leaving their houses or the dorms.

“The event went well. There was bad weather however students still came out and participated. We had about 30 plus students show up to do crafts. The event overall went very good, they were very engaged. We will be doing craft night in the future,” Karl McFarlane, student affairs graduate assistant and head member of The Pit, said.

Social media speaker inspires students JaQuavius Feltson Reporter Tom Krieglstein, who travels across the country lecturing students about how to maximize their socialize media usage, visited CSC. The event started at 7 p.m. in the Student Center Ballroom and lasted for an hour. He had a good turnout at his event with almost all of the chairs in the Ballroom full. He quickly got the audience involved by asking a series of questions which involved the audience speaking to their neighbors. He then told the audience of how powerful social media can be by showing them what Mark Zuckerberg, the creator of Facebook, achieved in his college years.

He started off by giving the audience an example of how powerful social media really is stating that 97 percent of all students have social media and 63 percent log in on a daily basis. He had three main themes that he wanted to stress to the audience during the lecture.

The themes were the mega phone, which means now through social media we can spread our information quicker than ever. The second was the glass bedroom, which he explained means people can see a lot of what you’re doing through the Internet and vice versa. Lastly was the digital footprint, which shows what type of per-

son you are by what you leave and post on the Internet.

“I got into traveling from school to school speaking because I wanted to be an entrepreneur, he had a passion for student life, and realized his talent in public speaking,” Krieglstein said.

He said that it didn’t start off great like people would have thought and it took time.

“People say I’m an overnight success but it was 10 years in the making, so my advice to the students would be to calm down because things take time,” Krieglstein said.

He explained that 70 percent of all human resource departments look online to find information on applicants, which includes going to their social media accounts in some cases. He quizzed the audience about who they were online and asked them if that is who they are trying to portray themselves as to possible employers.

Another big message he presented toward the end of the lecture was if its clickable then its trackable, meaning if a person puts it on the Internet someone can track it back to you. Krieglstein also believes the most important part of social media is how you leverage it, stating that “you can use it so that people can know more about your skills and talents.”

Students compete for prizes, race on campus William McLaughlin Reporter The CSC Residence Life Association hosted The Amazing Race last weekend with a number of students participating in the 2.5 mile challenge race. Students competed in teams of two and could do so as an all-male, allfemale, or male/female team.

The winners for the men’s team consisted of Taylor Osmotherly, junior of Crawford; and David Jones, sophomore of Eaton, Colorado, finishing the race in 25 minutes, 0.55 seconds.

The male/female team winners were Brandon Schwenk, senior of Omaha; and Cassie Johnson, sophomore of Rock Springs, Wyoming, in 34:0.28. The all-female team winners were Shayla Dockweiler, freshman of Oconto, and Sierra Martinez, freshman of Aztec, New Mexico, in 37:32.

The 2.5 mile course consisted of six challenge areas that the competitors had to successfully complete before running to the next challenge. Judges at each area decided whether or not the teams completed the challenge correctly. Teams that failed had to start the challenge over again.

The race started in front of the Lindeken Clock Tower. Students took off from there and turned left onto 10th Street toward Memorial Hall where the teams had to do a coloring/drawing of an item for their first challenge.

From there, teams ran behind Edna Hall and onto the snake path to the football practice fields near the Chicoine Center for the next two challenges. On the west practice fields competitors did boot camp style challenge where teams did jumping jacks,

ran up and down C-Hill and finished with push-ups. From there, teams went to the east end of the practice fields where competitors tested their leg strength and accuracy by attempting a field goal for the third challenge.

After finishing up on the fields, teams cut across the softball field parking lot to the Eagle Ridge housing units for the fourth challenge, consisting of yard games. Teams had to play a quick game of corn hole, where they had to make one corn hole each before advancing.

The fifth challenge waited at Chadron Middle School. To get there, teams ran down Chapin Street by the Burkhiser Complex and Andrews Hall, went right in East 10th Street, hooked left onto Cedar Street, then another left onto Sixth Street.

Challenge No. 5 tested team’s arithmetic and math skills.

Teams had to do as many multiplication problems in under a minute, without having a wrong answer in order to move on to the final challenge.

The sixth challenge took place at War Memorial Park where competitors had to do a disc golf throw at hole No. 1. Teams had to hit a par 3 on the hole in order to make their way to the finish line back at the Clock Tower.

“I’m glad we had a good turnout for event, especially since it wasn’t the warmest and raining pretty much the whole time,” Jazz Bozner, Kent Hall residence director, said.

Along with the race, competitors were also entered into a prize raffle at the end of the race.

Prizes consisted of items such as Wal-Mart gift cards, Frisbee discs, volleyballs, and footballs.

Evan L. Brooks Reporter The Resident Life Association hosted the second annual fortune telling event Tuesday in the Gold Room.

The event featured a few RAs from different dormitory buildings on campus, including Mike Steube, 21, senior of Plattsmouth; Curtis Stevens, 23, senior of Ogallala; and Katie Tobin, 20, junior of Mount Kisco, New York. Steube took care of everything up front, keeping track of attendance and drawing names from a jar for door prize winners.

Stevens and Tobin each had their own tables in which they performed fortune telling techniques of different cultures.

Steube said the goal of the event was to show diversity in a

way that residents were not used to, and claimed that RLA plans to keep this event in the rotation for years to come.

The turnout was something for the hosts to be proud of, as it exceeded its turnout from last year by far. Students seemed interested in what could be a possible reading about their futures.

“It was all spot-on,” Joey Hopkins, 22, senior of Seattle, said. “I was expecting it to be all B.S., but it surprised me.

“My favorite reading was when the card reader told me that my future was free-spirited and undetermined, which meant I won’t follow one path.”

Not all participants were as excited as Hopkins about their readings, as some painted negative illustrations of peoples’ futures.

However, they seemed to enjoy the event nonetheless.
