Results for Senate election have been announced

BRIEFS Nearly Naked Mile set for Friday The Nearly Naked Mile race and other events are scheduled for 9 p.m.-midnight Friday. The event is a way for students to have fun during a short race, wear costumes and give back to the community by donating clothes. Clothing donations will be accepted in the Student Center. Prizes will be awarded in three categories - best individual and group costumes; those who donate the most clothes; and the person with the fastest race time.

PR Club, Project Strive seek to raise anxiety awareness with ‘Angst’

Student Senate Elections closed noon, Friday, April 20. The results are as follows: Leah Guerrero, 20, sophomore of Greeley, Colorado; Jessica Powell, 22, senior of Dalton; Brandon Smith, 19, freshmen of Alliance; Lelisse Umeta, 20, sophomore of Addis Ababa were elected as Senator at Large.

Chaona Radtke, 21, junior of Sidney was elected as School of E.H.P.C.P.S.W. Senator. Aaron Wood, 21, junior of Ogallala was elected as School of Liberal Arts Senator. Konnery Klueber, 20, sophomore of Rapid City, South Dakota was elected as Vice President. Lukas Klueber, 20, sophomore of Rapid City, South Dakota was elected as President.

Senate also elected Senator at Large Jessica Powell for Secretary and Senator at Large Lelisse Umeta for the position of Vice President of Finance.

Senate also elected Julia Elbert, 18, freshmen of Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Senate has a budget of $135,513.25 in allocated unspent funds.

Senate allocated $3,500 to go toward a leadership training conference set to be scheduled sometime next year.

The last Free Bowling Night was deemed a success by CAB Representative Kimberly Hernandez.

“Last night we had our last Free Bowling Night of the semester. We had 72 people come, which was a pretty perfect number for how many lanes we had there,” Hernandez said.

In another matter, there are several cardboard boxes laying outside the Senate office at are free for students to take.

“You probably noticed when you came over that there are cardboard boxes sitting outside the Senate office. Please tell people that we have them.

I figured if I put them out there, people would take them, but I want them gone,” President Carly Slaght said.

The Public Relations club would like to invite all CSC students to Memorial Hall on April 30 for a showing of the documentary “Angst.” There will be one showing at 1 p.m., and at 7 p.m. there will be a second showing.

The Public Relations club and Project Strive invite students to come watch a special screening of “Angst: Raising Awareness Around Anxiety” at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m., April 30, in Memorial Hall Auditorium. Admission is free.

Following the screening, there will be panel discussions among counselors, community members, faculty and staff. The Public Relations Club will also be providing May Day baskets on campus during finals week.

NPA names former Eagle editor Neb. top young journalist A former editor of The Eagle was one of two journalists who earned the Outstanding Young Nebraska Journalist Award, daily newspaper division, at the 144th Nebraska Press Association (NPA) Convention, Friday and Saturday in Lincoln.

Harrison native and past Eagle editor Spike Jordan, editor of the Hemingford Ledger, tied with Derek Noehren, sports editor of The North Platte Telegraph, for NPA’s top young journalist award.

Nebraska is home to 17 dailies. The two were selected from a field of 12 young journalists nominated by their respective newspapers, NPA Executive Director Allen Beermann said.

Jordan earned the award for a body of work he produced in 2017 when he served as a copy-editor, reporter and agriculture editor at The Star-Herald, Scottsbluff. On April 1 he was promoted to editor of the Hemingford Ledger, which, like the Star-Herald and The North Platte Telegraph, is owned by billionaire Warren Buffet’s BH Media Group, Omaha.

“I owe a debt of gratitude to everyone at the Star-Herald, from the newsroom and the press-room to the advertising and circulation departments,” Jordan said. “Their hard work freed me up to do what I love most: telling stories that kept the public informed.”

The NPA’s Outstanding Young Nebraska Journalist Award carries a $1,000 stipend and is underwritten by Zean and Marilyn Carney, former publishers of several Nebraska newspapers. Their son, Jeff Carney, of BH Media, presented the award to Jordan and Noehren at NPA’s Friday luncheon, Beermann said.

one with the necessary publishing frequency to carry legal notices.

In addition to NPA’s young journalist award, Jordan also captured first in the Specialty/Lifestyle Sections category, daily division, in the association’s annual Better Newspaper Contest, for his work on the Star-Herald’s Sunday Farm & Ranch edition.

His agriculture coverage across the Panhandle also contributed to the Star-Herald winning the 2018 Omaha World-Herald Service to Agriculture Award.

For Jordan, a veteran of the Iraq War who turned 30 on April 3, winning journalism awards is nothing new.

As a CSC student, he won numerous awards for his reporting, column writing and photojournalism during his three-and-a-half years with The Eagle. Throughout his tenure, he served as a reporter and columnist, spring and fall, 2012; opinion editor, spring 2013; managing editor, fall 2013; news editor, spring 2014; and opinion editor again, fall 2014 through spring 2015.

After leaving CSC in 2015, he worked as a reporter and photographer for The Douglas (Wyoming) Budget, October 2015 to May 2016, where he covered courts and government.

In January 2017, he won the Wyoming Press Association’s top award in the General News Story category, and shared second place in the Business and Energy Reporting category with former Budget reporters Nick Balatsos and Jen Kocher for their coverage of the state’s declining coal industry.

In May 2016 he joined the newspaper staff at the Star-Herald, first as a copy editor and paginator. In February 2017 he moved into a reporting post, and five months later, on July 1, he was promoted to agriculture editor after longtime Ag Editor Sandra Hansen retired.

Unwanted items may be donated during finals Loren Ritter Sports Editor The Retired & Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) partnered with Northwest Community Action Partnership to set up trailers for donations.

Trailers will be placed outside residence halls during move out week near where the dumpsters are. Items for donation should be in good or working condition.

“My inner hippie just wants you to know that every time you throw away a good piece of furniture or perfectly good appliance, a woodland fairy dies someplace,” Deena Kennell said.

The items will be given to Catholic Ladies Rummage Sale and senior center for them to resell. Volunteers will be there from 10 a.m.-8 p.m., Tuesday through Friday next week to collect donations.

In another matter, Isaac Langan, 21, junior of McCook was elected to the position of Vice Chair of Finance.

Nominations for the 2018-19 school year’s CAB Executive Board were closed at the end of the meeting, and are set to reopen at first meeting next semester to fill the position of Vice Chair of Public Relations.

As of right now, the CAB Cricut has been ordered and will be housed in the purple student lounge room located in the basement of the library.

“The Cricut will also be in the library so it can be monitored as to who is using it and what not. So, if it does get broken we know who is responsible,” Tierra Snyder, said.

Clubs will be responsible for purchasing their own materials to use in the, but will not be charged for each use of the machine.

Plan ahead to prevent Bright Side stress during finals On the Rachel Mitchell Columnist This is it my friends. It is the final push of the semester. Whether it is finishing papers, projects or getting ready for finals, there is not much time left.

Not having a lot of time can be both exciting and stressful, but it’s exciting because summer is just around the corner. Stress comes when you realize summer is so close yet there’s still so much to do.

One thing you can do to make finals a little less stressful is to dress for success. I don’t know about you but when I put a little effort into my outfit, my mindset becomes a little more positive. I also know that when I do not put a lot of effort into my outfit or how I look, I tend to be more tired and not as engaged.

So, as finals are approaching, take some time to look at your

wardrobe and pick out a few outfits that might make you feel a little more positive going into finals.

Another thing you can do to prepare yourself for finals is have all of your necessities ready the night before. Make sure you have everything you need in your backpack, double check your presentations or essays and make sure you have plenty of pencils and papers or anything else you might need.

Also, set out your clothes the night before to allow you to not feel

as stressed before heading to your finals. That way when you wake up in the morning you can focus on what you have to do for your final.

The last suggestion I have for you is to get plenty of sleep and allow yourself enough time to wake up before you go. Don’t stay up till 3 a.m. trying to cram last minute. Go to bed at a decent time then wake up a little earlier to finish studying.

Trying to overload your brain in the middle of the night is a recipe for disaster. Try allowing yourself enough time to wake up and feel ready for your final.

It is way better than waking up 15 minutes before you have to go to class.

With these in mind I hope you all do your best during finals week. Have a great rest of the semester and an awesome summer, my dudes.

Try coloring to relax this finals week Abigail Swanson Contributor With finals week sneaking up on us, it is even more important to find a way to destress quickly. You may not have the time or inclination to take a twenty-minute walk in the mud and snow, but I’m sure you could pull out some colorful pencils or crayons and put on your artist’s beret for five or 10 minutes.

In a study for the Journal of American Art Therapy Association, Nancy A. Curry and Tim Kasser investigated how coloring for 20 minutes, even with a simple design, can reduce stress and anxiety. By coloring a mandala or boxy plaid design, the participants in the study entered a meditative state which helped them find

relief from their anxiety and stress. So, if you have a coloring book, the time has come to pull it out and give it some love.

As another bonus, once you have finished your design, you have one more piece of art to brighten up those drab dorm walls which are getting dull after 16 weeks.

A word of caution however: these benefits only apply to those coloring with a design. In the coloring study, the test group which only colored on a blank sheet of paper did not experience the same anxiety reduction as the other test group.

It took more concentration for them to decide what to draw, and they spent more time selecting each color, instead of just coloring. So, if you were think-

ing of just doodling on scratch paper for five minutes instead of coloring a design, think again.

Fortunately, even if you don’t have one of the ever-more-popular “adult” coloring books, with just a simple Google search you can find hundreds of mandalas and other designs free to print and color. I personally am working on my Lord of the Rings coloring book (I’m sure my roommate appreciates the elves and dragons on my wall).

You could start a design in the morning, study until your brain needs a break, pop in some tunes and jam while you color. Then, you could study a little more until your next break and get back to coloring your picture.

Coloring, unlike breaking out a TV show or movie, doesn’t have a running time or cliffhangers. Therefore, you don’t need to worry about stopping in the middle. I’ve worked on pictures for days and each time I came back it was just as good as before. Also, as a bonus, when you’ve finished studying, you can finish your masterpiece while you catch up on your Netflix binge.

So, the next time you’re feeling stressed and pressed for time, grab some colored pencils, crayons, markers or even highlighters, print off your favorite design and destress in the comfort of your dorm.

It won’t be long before you are destressed and enjoying your colorful dorm walls as you study.

Think twice before you ghost someone Loren Ritter Sports Editor Hiding behind our smartphones, it’s pretty easy to make the decision that we would rather disappear out of someone’s life rather than just tell them that we don’t think they’d be a great fit for us.

According to dictionary.com, the definition of ghosting is the practice of ending all contact with a person without explanation, especially in a romantic relationship.

This story is pretty common in the 21st century; two people talk on social media, they hit it off (or so one of them thinks), things are going great and then “ope!,” where’d they go? Before you know it, you’ve been ghosted.

At some point in your life, you have probably been ghosted, or ghosted someone else. When you are the one doing the ghosting, you usually don’t even think twice about it.

Becoming disinterested in someone is an easy thing to do, yet we take

for granted how much it can shake up the other person involved.

According to psychologytoday.com, ghosting can be frustrating because the ghosting process deprives people of the proper social cues they need for basic interaction.

One doesn’t know how they should react because they don’t know exactly what happened. The malicious part about ghosting is that it makes one question themselves and what they possibly did wrong rather than questioning the quality of the relationship.

So, what’s the trend? Personally, I don’t see the appeal of not being straightforward. Life is short, and if someone means something to you, I think it’s better to tell them.

The same goes if someone does not mean anything to you. Either way, it is best if you tell them. If you feel that someone means more to you than you do to them, it’s probably not the most comfortable of situations.

Although it may be awkward at first,

people usually value honesty more than being strung along. It’s a win-win because you’re also doing a good deed by being truthful.

I can say from personal experience that it’s pretty awkward when you suddenly see that person who kind of dropped off of the face of the Earth on campus going about their business like nothing ever happened.

The question is, what can you do?

Some people would argue that the only thing that would make them feel better is causing a scene.

Asking things like, where have you been? Did you know I called you? How could you have left me on read? But the reality is, I don’t think you should do anything.

Move on with your life. After all, it wouldn’t be too fun being friends with a ghost, let alone dating them. Sure, they’re a lot of fun, but protect your mental health and on the flipside, think twice before you think you have perfected the art of ghosting.

Jill Harper of Sandusky was driving when she noticed the boy and she pulled over. After failing to reach the boy from the porch steps, the boy let go from the gutter and Harper caught him.

Chadron State Park remains a consistent job site for TBE Krystal Wilson Photo Editor The Big Event volunteers hit the trails on Saturday.

Despite gloomy weather conditions during the morning spring football game, the rain and snow stopped just in time for volunteers to head to their job sites.

About 30 students, faculty and staff headed out to Chadron State Park to help clean and clear trails of tree stumps, tree limbs and debris.

Park staff split the volunteers up into several groups and led them to job sites around the park. A group of CSC wrestlers was chosen to do the heavy lifting for the day.

The wrestlers helped load large stumps into the back of a truck and unload them in a designated area. “We were picking up stumps all day, then drove around and helped clean up the park,�

hillsides as they helped clean up debris along the 1.8 mile Steamboat Butte Trail.

May told his group to throw any limbs and branches off of the trails, and to cut any new tree growth that would be too large for the park’s mowers to cut down.

The group led by Galbraith headed further up into the hills to clear off a newly marked trail.

flags, the group of 14 cleared the trail in about an hour and a half.

“My favorite part of working was the element of surprise. We didn’t know what we were going to do, so that was fun,” Celeste Cardona, 19, freshman of Mitchell said. “We had a lot of people to get the job done fast. Volunteer work and giving back to our community is cool.”

While the justice studies department and RLOP usually help the police department during The Big Event, this year the police department didn’t have anything for them to do. The group ended up heading to the state park so they could all be together at one job site.

“We wanted our students to be together.

We are a very tight group of students and faculty, so we just wanted to do stuff together,” said Justice Studies Associate Professor James Wada. “It’s kind of a retention idea as well, because we get to know the students better and the students get to know us better.”

CSC Athletics give back through The Big Event to the community that supports them Torri Brumbaugh, Nalani Stewart & Lydia Privett Managing Editor, News Editor & Opinion Editor CSC athletes gave back to the community and made up a large part of volunteers at The Big Event, Saturday.

The CSC women’s basketball team headed out early Saturday morning to clean up a local residence, while the men’s basketball team helped with another community member’s yard.

The football athletes returned to Wilson Park, a recurring job site for The Big Event, to help spread mulch around the park’s playground and the arboretum. They also cleaned up trash.

“The football team comes here every year and does this. It’s a big help for the city of Chadron and we really do appreciate it …. Having a day like today make it really worth while for the city,” said Scott Schremmer, the parks, cemetery and airport superintendent.

The track athletes split up to cover numerous job sites throughout Chadron after a late start in The Big Event due to their practice. The volleyball team spread mulch around the trees at the Dawes County Courthouse.

Volleyball Coach Riann Mullis said, “This is our third year since I’ve been here. I think it’s a great opportunity to give back to the community of Chadron. They do so much for the college and it’s just a great environment, so any time we have the opportunity to give back we want to contribute.”

CSC athletes witness great support from the community, and they see The Big Event as a chance to give back.

Member of the football team, Jake Geil, 22, senior of Casper, Wyoming, said, “[I]t’s really good for our football team to give back to the community because they are always supporting us. It’s great to come out, especially to this park where kids play and we can make it safer and make the job easier on everyone else.”

“I think that [The Big Event] has had a positive effect on me because a lot of us are so busy that we don’t normally take the time out of our day to go volunteer,” said volleyball player Timmi Kiesel, 20, junior of Sterling, Colorado. “It’s really cool that the whole community can get together and give back.”

The volleyball team and the football team worked at public job sites, but the track athletes were able to see the impact of The Big Event at local residences.

“It felt good to get out and help people in our community. I could tell everyone was very thankful for the work we did for them,” Christina Frick, 21, junior of Fort Morgan, Colorado.

Despite threat of rain and snow, The Big Event perseveres Krystal Wilson & Torri Brumbaugh Photo Editor & Managing Editor As the day of The Big Event approached, the weather forecast was unpredictable at best.

With rain and snow in the forecast Saturday morning, The Big Event team had to make some last minute adjustments moving the sign-up tables into the lobby of the Chicoine Center, instead of the usual outdoor location.

While almost 500 volunteers signed up, 410 students checked in Saturday morning for The Big Event, even with the rain and snow.

“I think that all things considered with the weather [The Big Event] went really well. For the past six years, there have been several job sites that have participated regularly. Some of these include the Museum of the Fur Trade, Wilson Park, Chadron State Park and Chadron Friends of Pets. Each year, the Social Work Club volunteers at Crestview Care Center. This year, they had an ice cream social with the residents.

The Big Event may be just a few hours for the volunteers, but it is a year-round commitment for the student staff members. Planning begins in the fall semester. Volunteer staff members apply and are chosen, then the team begins to map out goals and plans for the upcoming April date.

As they plan the upcoming event, the staff looks at ways to improve and how to maintain volunteers. They also start planning promotional events for The Big Event, such as the Big White Out and the Tower of Power.

While this year’s Big Event may be over, there is still work to be done as French-Collins and staff begin to evaluate the event’s success.

“Every year we continue to post-event evaluate and continually work on communication between job site leaders, staff members, and volunteers,” French-Collins said. “We collect brief surveys from not only job site leaders, but from job sites themselves and we then put all of that together and we evaluate it. Then next fall we’ll start implementing those constructive criticisms and changes where we see need fit.”

The Big Event helps strengthen sisterhood bonds Katelyn Lambert Lifestyles Editor Despite Saturday’s cold weather, CSC’s Zeta Alpha Kappa and Xi Delta Zeta sororities headed outside of town for The Big Event to help some of Chadron’s local summer attractions, Camp Norwesca and the Dawes County Historical Society, Inc. Museum.

Both the job sites were forced to change their original volunteer tasks when the weather turned to snow and rain.

Camp Norwesca is a Methodist summer camp for children across Nebraska, located in Chadron State Park. Meg Mayle, the camp’s acting director, modified the original plans for the work site to accommodate the poor weather conditions Saturday morning.

“Originally, we were going to have them put wood chips around baby trees [planted near the campsite],” Mayle said.

Instead, Mayle enlisted ZAK to ready the cabins for this summer’s campers, who will be arriving at the end of May. Twenty members of ZAK signed up for The Big Event and all twenty participated. Some ZAK members were participating for their first time in The Big Event, while others were veterans in their third year.

Camp Norwesca assigned ZAK to sweep floors, wipe down bunk beds and improve the appearance of the five residential cabins, the craft cabin and a house located on the campsite. They also repainted the walls in the house.

“It’s just a really good time to give back to the community and bond as a sorority,” said Samantha Merrill, 21, junior of Hot Springs, South Dakota. “We can roll around in the mud and have some fun.”

Phyllis Carlson, the Dawes County Historical museum curator of five years, said the museum has been a regular job site. She enjoys having the college students come and help around the museum.

“They just have so much fun,” Carlson said.

Carlson planned on having the volunteers work on scraping the paint off of the inside and outside of the schoolhouse located at the museum, repainting the schoolhouse and painting windows.

Instead, Xi Delta Zeta cleaned the glass on all of the exhibits and dusted and vacuumed around the museum. A few members also redressed a mannequin with clothing from the late nineteenth century, which once belonged to a woman from Dawes County.

“It’s nice to get out and meet a part of the community because I personally don’t get to see a lot of it,” MacKenna Broeder, 21, junior of Spearfish, South Dakota, said. “I am very grateful to everyone who supports the college.”

Savannah Jackson, 21, senior of Valentine, said “I’ve been a part of The Big Event for two years and it’s been a fun bonding experience both times.”

The Big Event allowed both sororities to give back and bond as sisters in their sororities.

As snow began to fall Saturday morning, many job sites involved in The Big Event changed their tasks to avoid outside yard work.

Despite the cold, students still worked hard to do yard work throughout Chadron to say “thank you” to the community.

The Education Club came together to build a garden with Keep Chadron Beautiful. The students put up posts and began building the garden.

Robin Brierly, professor of education and job site leader, said, “They are building a garden for the school. And they will have flowers and plants and birds, eventually, they’re hoping. Just having something the students can enjoy at recess or

from their classrooms and study and something to keep Chadron beautiful.”

Brierly has been a job site leader since The Big Event began at CSC six years ago.

“I love The Big Event. It’s a great opportunity to help out the community that we live in and work in and it’s just, I think it’s wonderful for both sides,” Brierly said.

Lisa Stein, director of admissions at CSC, oversaw the job site at her parent’s, Marcia and Richard Stein’s, house as the job site leader. Marcia Stein said that this year was the first time she participated as a job site in The Big Event.

“This is our house and we have many gardens, and it’s a tremendous amount of work getting them ready for the spring. So this has cut my work in more than half,” Marcia Stein said.

Reporter The Eagle football team hosted their annual spring game, Saturday. Due to construction of the new sports complex, the game was moved from Elliott Field to the practice fields.

Attendees had the opportunity to be close to the action while standing near the sidelines. The defense won the game by a score of 40-36 because they held the offense out of the end zone on a number of occasions. However, the day belonged to running back Priest Jennings, redshirt junior of Stockton, California.

After missing a majority of the 2017 season, Jennings showcased his speed, providing Chadron State fans optimism for the coming season. Jennings scored all three of the touchdowns in the game from runs of about 15, 60 and 65 yards.

On both touchdowns, Jennings was aided by a wide-open hole paved by the offensive line and it was up to the running back to use his speed to separate himself from the entire defense.

Despite the lack of experience on the field, there was only one turnover which was an interception by Jaxon King, redshirt freshman of Fleming, Colorado. The Eagles offense did not lose a single fumble even though they battled snowy conditions.

“We have younger offensive linemen that learned a lot from the older offensive linemen, so they made great jumps this spring,” said Stevann Brown, redshirt junior of Casper, Wyoming.

Near the end of the spring game, offensive and defensive linemen had the chance to field punts and showcase their athleticism.

Many players from both sides struggled to catch the ball, but Brendan Hopkins, redshirt sophomore of Green River, Wyoming, rose to the occasion at the end.

“I feel very confident heading into fall with an experienced offense and a talented defense,” Kyle Temple, redshirt senior of Norfolk, said. “With hard work this summer and good preparation and reps during Fall camp I see (the team) coming together very well,” The spring game came to a conclusion, and students and faculty went to their job sites for The Big Event.

The Eagles will return to the gridiron this upcoming fall in their home opener against rival Black Hills State University Yellow Jackets.

Adams State Grizzlies dominate the Eagles in a four-game sweep Devin Fulton Reporter The Eagles softball team traveled down to Alamosa, Colorado to take on RMAC rival Adams State Grizzlies. In a crucial weekend for both teams’ postseason hopes, the Grizzlies asserted themselves into the RMAC tournament conversation with a four-game sweep of the Eagles.

Saturday, the Eagles got off to a slow start in the first game of the afternoon. The Grizzlies were able to score two runs in the first and fourth innings. The Eagles finally got on the scoreboard with one run in the sixth inning after Leilani Niccum, freshman of Citrus Heights, California, notched an RBI double.

The Grizzlies took the first game of the series by a score of 4-1. In game two, the Grizzlies once again got off to a fast start, scoring two immediate runs in the first in-

ning. Then, the Grizzlies took over in the third inning after scoring four runs to lead 6-1 over the Eagles. Chadron State saw some success in the third, fourth and fifth innings with a single in each, but would ultimately fall to Adams State by a score of 6-3 in game two.

The Eagles got off to a fast start in the first game on Sunday, but the Grizzlies found a way to take the game into nine innings, eventually winning 6-5. In the second inning, Angelica Maples, sophomore of Olivehurst, California, had a two-RBI double and scored on a double from fellow teammate Kendyl Moody, junior of Lakewood, Colorado.

The Eagles added another run in the third to go up 4-0, but saw the Grizzlies put together two runs in the fourth and sixth innings to tie the ballgame 4-4. The teams went into the ninth inning with the game tied up. Bailynn Meek, freshman of Orangeville, California, hit a single homerun to put the Eagles in position to win 5-4.

Adams State, then, tied the game with an unearned run followed by a walk-off single to win 6-5.

The final game of the series belonged to the Grizzlies. After scoring three runs in the third inning, the Grizzlies held a safe lead to the Eagles and would go on to win 3-1.

For postseason play, the Eagles are sitting at the 10th spot in the RMAC with a 10-23

conference record. To get into the eighth seat of the RMAC Tournament, Chadron State must win three games this weekend against Fort Lewis. Then, Colorado Mesa needs to hand CSU Pueblo three losses, and Black Hills State needs to win one less game than the Eagles. The Eagles have a steep hill to climb, but with help, they can get to the postseason.

Moon advances to College National Finals Rodeo in June Kylee Odenbach Reporter Rowdy Moon, 21, junior of Sargent, will advance to the College National Finals Rodeo in Casper, Wyoming, this June. He sealed the runner-up position in the bareback riding competition in the Central Rocky Mountain Region for the 2017-18 season.

Chadron State College competed at the Casper College Rodeo this past weekend.

Moon scored 69 points on each of his bareback rides. He finished fourth in the event with 840 points for the season.

Prestyn Novak, of Newell, South Dakota, placed third in the steer wrestling at Casper.

He placed ninth the first go-round with a time of 6.2 seconds. He was runner-up in the finals with 5.1 seconds.

Novak is currently fifth in the steer wrestling standings with 390 points. He also took sixth place in the tie-down roping at Casper. He tied for fifth in the first goround with 10.3 seconds, and placed fourth

in the finals with 9.1 seconds.

Two other Chadron State College contestants are still in the running to make Nationals in the steer wrestling.

Devin Dibbern, junior of Riverdale, is currently third with 445 points. Kalane Anders, junior of Bayard, is fourth with 410 points.

Lance Neuerberg, senior of Kersey, Colorado, and his partner, Drew Neuerberg, of Northeastern Junior College in Sterling, Colorado, placed fourth in the team roping at Casper. They turned in times of 12.3 and

12 seconds.

Brandi Cwach, senior of Geddes, South Dakota, took fourth in the goat tying with times of 6.4 and 7 seconds.

Cody Trump, senior of Merriman, tied for fifth in the first go-round of the saddle bronc riding with 68 points.

Cole Retchless, sophomore of Bridgeport, placed eighth in the steer wrestling turning in a time of 6 seconds.

The Chadron State College rodeo team will compete this weekend in Laramie, Wyoming at the University of Wyoming.

Track & Field sets eight personal bests in Azusa, California Aaron Duin Reporter The Chadron State track and field teams set a slew of personal best marks at the Bryan Clay Invitational this weekend in Azusa, California, including a school record in the steeplechase set by Alyse Henry, junior of Rock Springs, Wyoming. Henry’s time of 10:56.8 improved the CSC school record by over 9 seconds.

Setting school records California has become common for Eagle distance runners. Nine of the 10 record marks in the running events from the 1500 to the 10,000 have been

set at meets in California.

Along with setting a school record Henry also had a career best in the 1500-meter run with a time of 4:46.88.

Teammate Madi Watson, freshman of Mitchell completed the race in 4:49.45. Both women now have top ten all-time marks for the Eagles at ninth and tenth respectively.

On the men’s side, the Eagles were led by Isaac Grimes, freshman of Rancho Verde, California. The freshman leaped 48 feet, 8 ¼ inches in the triple jump. The mark is the second-best all-time by an Eagle and moves him into the top spot in the current RMAC standings for 2018. Grimes also qualified for the finals in the long jump with a leap of 24 feet, 3 inches but was unable to compete.

All seven of the Eagle men’s distance runners competing this weekend set personal best marks. The Eagles took advantage of the low altitude and strong competition to make improvements. Levi Avila, senior of Mitchell, ran a personal best 14:58.48 in the 5000-meter run and a season best 4:03.07 in the 1500-meter run. The winner of the 1500-meter run, University of New Mexico’s Josh Kerr, junior of Edinburgh, Scotland, set a new NCAA record at 3:35.01.

The Eagles will be back in action at the RMAC Championships April 26through April 28. After the RMAC championships the Eagles have the opportunity to compete in last chance meets to attempt to qualify for the national championship meet.

Golf team closes books on dismal season in Arizona Katelyn Lambert Lifestyles Editor The CSC golf team concluded their 2017-18 season Tuesday, placing 11th out of 11 teams at the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships in Chandler, Arizona. The championship rounds began on Sunday, followed by the second round Monday and the third round wrapping up on Tuesday.

Sunday, the team shot a score of 394, which set them at the tail end of the rankings. Sam Rahmig, junior, of Gering, golfed an 88 during Sunday’s round, placing her at

42nd out of 59 golfers.

The University of Colorado, Colorado Springs, led the pack with a score of 293 after the first round, nearly 100 strokes ahead of the Eagles.

Following a mediocre showing Sunday, CSC stepped up and shed 28 strokes during Monday’s round.

Rahmig added one stroke to her scorecard and moved down one place to 43rd, while teammates Adrianna Weeldreyer, freshman of Newell, South Dakota, and Tori Meschke, freshman of Broken Bow, managed to drop six and 16 strokes, respectively.

With a two-day score of 760, the Eagles

remained in 11th and UCCS held onto the top spot heading into the final round.

Tuesday’s round proved most successful for the team, earning their best overall score of the tournament for the Eagles. The team managed to drop 38 strokes off of Sunday’s round, showing improvement as the championship progressed.

However, this improvement came too late, as the team was not able to upset the rankings and landed 21 strokes below 10thplace finisher Adams State University, Alamosa, Colorado.

Dropping eight strokes from Monday’s round as a team, the Eagles came out of the championship with a scorecard of 394-366-

358-1118.

After shedding six strokes from her second round, Rahmig moved up from her 43rd-place spot to finish the championship in 39th. Weeldreyer finished in 51st and Logan Kasten, freshman of Cheyenne, Wyoming, tied with Meschke for 53rd.

UCCS clinched the championship with little competition, up 24 strokes from second-place finisher Colorado Mesa University, Grand Junction.

Despite a disappointing conclusion to the season, the team is currently expecting four new golfers to join the team for the 2018-19 season, rounding out the roster to make an eight-girl team.

Taylor’s advice for those who are looking to wrestle at the collegiate level is, “Don’t underestimate yourself. You can achieve more than you think, as long as you’re willing to work towards it.”

“My goal in college rodeo is to make the College National Finals Rodeo. It also would be awesome to take a team to the CNFR,” Cominiello said.

Cominiello considers herself a positive person that inspires others. She tries to help the new rodeo team members feel welcome.

“I like to think that I can be a light in the dark world that we live in,” Cominiello said. “The team is really like a little community. We have extremely close relationships.”

Cominiello strongly recommends the rodeo team to anyone thinking about attending Chadron State College.

Despite her age, Cominiello has made strides as a part of the rodeo team and has proven that age is but a number.

Community and campus come together at band concert CSC Wind Symphony and Campus and Community Band join forces to perform in final concert of 2017-18 school year Kylee Odenbach Reporter The Chadron State College Department of Music performed the Wind Symphony and Campus and Community Band concert, 7 p.m., Tuesday, April 24, in the Memorial Hall Auditorium.

About 50 people attended the concert.

Both the Campus and Community Band and the Wind Symphony performed four pieces on their own. The concert ended with the two collaborating on one piece.

The concert began with “The Liberty Bell,” composed

by John Philip Sousa, which was a march that many recognize from the show “Monty Python’s Flying Circus.”

The second piece performed, “Trumpet Concerto in E-Flat,” which was written in 1803 by Johann Hummel, featured Campus and Community Band trumpet soloist Rich McCall, of Alliance.

“Rich McCall began playing the trumpet at age 12 and continued playing throughout high school, college, and eventually played for President Eisenhower. He currently lives in Alliance,” Michael Knight, assistant professor of music and band director said.

“Trumpet Concerto in E-Flat” was a bright and happy piece, and McCall’s solo stood out while the band helped in shaping the concerto.

The “Florentiner March” was the first piece of the night played by the Wind Symphony. The piece was produced in 1907 by Julius Fucik.

“The ‘Florentiner March’ is played at circuses sometimes,” Knight said.

The second piece played by the Wind Symphony was a newer piece called “Chaos Theory,” written by James Bonney in 2002. McKay Tebbs, assistant professor of music, played several solos within the song on his electric guitar.

The bands combined and ended the concert with “March and Procession of Bacchus” which was written by

Leo Delibes in 1876.

Kallie Bush, a music student at CSC, will be performing in a solo piano recital from 3-4 p.m., this Friday, April 27, in the Memorial Hall Auditorium.

There will also be a performance by the CSC Guitar Ensemble and Vocal Jazz members, starting at 6:30 at The Bean Broker, located in downtown Chadron. The students will be performing a variety of pieces across genres, and the performance is free and open to the public.

Following Friday’s two performances, there will be a guest artist recital at 7 p.m. on Saturday, April 28, in the Mari Sandoz Atrium.

The guest artist performing is Rachel Bergman, an instructor of flute and music theory at Sheridan College, Sheridan, Wyoming.

Accompanist Bobby Pace and CSC flute instructor Lauren Stephens will collaborate with Bergman to perform pieces by Bach, Schulhoff, Taffanel, Rutter and Schocker.

The recital is free and open to the public.

‘A Quiet Place’ defies the horror movie stereotype Sharaya Toof Contributor Imagine living in a world where you had to be totally silent, unable to make a sound, in fear of a scary monster that hunts by sound. If a sound is made in the slightest, you will be attacked.

The new modern-day horror film “A Quiet Place” embodies just that.

The story is centralized around a family of four having to live in total silence in order to survive, all while trying to find this monster’s weakness.

This horror film will have you terrified and trying to be just as quiet as the actors and actresses on the big screen.

This film is nearly silent throughout the entire movie, which makes it even scarier for you as an audience member.

It has you waiting for just the right time to take a handful of your popcorn or grab a piece of candy.

John Krasinski, the director of the film and the leading role in the movie, did not disappoint.

Pulling in his real-life wife Emily Blunt to play his on-screen wife in this film makes this movie even better.

Their chemistry in the film is strong and realistic, and watching their onscreen marriage grow throughout the film is one of the sweetest parts about this horror movie.

The pair must attempt to create a normal childhood for their children, despite the unusual life they are forced to lead because of a monster they cannot defeat.

In press junkets for “A Quiet Place,” Krasinski said that he typically does not like to watch horror films, which is surprising because of how well this film was made.

This film also features a deaf ac-

tress, who acted as both Krasinski’s character’s daughter and a guide for educating the cast on American Sign Language, which is used as a form of communication throughout the film.

Even though this film is technically considered a horror and drama, this movie falls more under the drama genre as it focuses on family values and what people are willing to do to save their families.

I would recommend people to see this movie. It is thrilling, but unlike other horror movies. Because it is mostly silent, that adds to the thrill of the movie. “A Quiet Place” is a movie not to miss.
