Senate strikes unconstitutional bylaw u By Aubrie Lawrence Editor

Student Senate made history when the Constitutional Court ruled a Student Senate bylaw to be unconstitutional at its general assembly meeting Monday.

CSC student Sullivan Jones, 19, sophomore of Papillion, petitioned the court on Thursday, March 25, because he said he believed the bylaw did not give fair and equal representation to the student body.

“Given the principles of fair and equal representation of the student population, candidates for the highest student senate office should not be required to serve on senate prior to running,” Jones wrote in his petition. “It is unfair to prevent every student in the school who is not currently on the student senate before running for office. Do U.S. senators have to be on the senate prior to running for presidency? Of course not. Because that would be unfair to the common people of the land.”

The bylaw in question is VI: Executive Offi-

cers subsection D. The bylaw states that candidates running for the office of student associate president “must serve at least one full term as a Senator before running for President” and that candidates running for the office of student associate vice president “must serve at least onehalf term as Senator before running for Vice President.”

The Constitutional Court examined the Constitution of Chadron State Senate, the United States Constitution, Supreme Court cases, and heard arguments before ruling that the bylaw was indeed unconstitutional and that it would be struck down.

Jones had been correct in saying that you cannot have equal and fair representation if the student body who is eligible to run is limited.

“The clear Separation of Powers are enforced within realm of Washington D.C. and we feel that a prior Chadron State College Senate enacting rules attempting to govern qualification to another branch of Government is a clear violation of the Separation of Powers,” the student Constitutional Court document state.

From now on, any full-time student that wishes to can be a candidate for president or vice president can run for office regardless of prior experience.

With this decision, President Lily

Umeta encouraged all students to run for office in the upcoming student senate election.

“I recommend running for any of the offices,” Umeta said. “I know a lot of us get shy when it comes to holding a position, I was one of them. I did not want to run for this position.

But I’m glad I did. I got a lot of experience out of it.”

Two new clubs are joining the ranks of other student organizations governed by the Campus Activities Board.

CAB Chair Ruth Mencia made the announncement at Monday’s General Assembly with Student Senate and CAB. “This one is Alpha Kappa Kappa Chapter, Kappa Delta Pi, so within their mission statement; is to promote influence in and recognizing outstanding contribution to education,” Mencia said.

Kappa Delta Pi, according to its website, is

an “international Honor Society in Education, was founded in 1911 to foster excellence in education and promote fellowship among those dedicated to teaching.”

Mencia then announced a second new club called the Frontier Liberty Organization.

Its constitution preamble, in part, states the following: “We the young people of the United States, in order to preserve American ideals in the face of division, spread the wings of democracy in a cloud of censorship, promote a rebirth of laissez-fair economics despite an overbearing government, and sow the seeds of a promising future, hereby establish this Constitution for the Frontier Liberty Organization.”

Last Tuesday and Wednesday, some CSC students received their first dose of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine.

CSC students became eligible to receive the vaccine after Panhandle Public Health District announced all panhandle vaccination providers were moving to vaccinate adults 18 and over.

Panhandle Public Health District Director Kim Engel announced the move during its Unified Command webinar with the Scottsbluff County Health Department Monday afternoon.

“It’s your turn, that’s what we want to get out,” Engel said. “Don’t feel like you’re taking anybody’s spot, or someone should have it before you. It’s your turn, so please take it.

COVID shots are now available for people over the age of 18.”

Engel says that college students were excluded from the congregate living standard of phase 1c of Nebraska’s vaccination plan because they were impacted less severely than

older populations. Nebraska moved past phase 1c and into phase 2 a couple of weeks ago.

“It was removed for college students because it really wasn’t evident that their outcomes were as bad as people older, so they were removed from that congregate living,” Engel said.

She says the vaccination for CSC is a special push due to college students’ time crunch.

“There is a timing issue for college students because we don’t have Johnson and Johnson [single dose vaccine] in abundance at this time,” Engel said. “So, if we want to get students vaccinated and then their second dose given before they go home, we’ve got to do it soon – this week or next. That is why it is happening at CSC this week.”

According to the CSC COVID-19 implementation team, at least 650 doses of the Moderna vaccine were assigned for distribution to CSC students.

Hope Stone is a sophomore of Chadron.

She received the vaccine on Tuesday.

“I feel like it’s a pretty responsible thing to do overall and it has been scientifically proven that vaccines can help,” she said.

She says she understands some people don’t want to get the vaccine but still urges them to receive it.

“They should at least consider it,” she said.

“If they feel like it isn’t safe, they should talk to a medical professional about it for sure.”

Another student, Wesley Palmier, freshman of Pine Ridge, South Dakota, received the shot but says he did not feel a thing. He expected to eventually get the shot, so he took the opportunity on Tuesday to receive it.

“I’m certain if I didn’t get it here, it would have been somewhere else,” Palmier said.

He says some people he knows are concerned about getting the shot, and concerned he was receiving it.

“Some people probably didn’t really like the idea that I was going to get the shot because they had their own concerns – which I understand,” he said. “It’s plausible to have concerns, especially with the vaccine coming out so quickly.”

He thinks as many people should get the vaccine as possible but understands it remains a choice.

“I think it should remain a choice; you have

a right to have cautions and concerns,” he said.

His concern for older relatives is one reason he got it and another reason he is less concerned about younger people receiving the vaccine.

“I would strongly advise my elder relatives and others who are mostly at risk to get the vaccine, but for most other people – especially ones my age – I don’t really think too much into it,” Palmier said.

Cheyenne Bacon, a sophomore of Lewellen, is another student who received a vaccination on Tuesday. She hopes the vaccine helps her return to pre-pandemic normalcy.

“I just want to go out and do things again, and I’m a theater major so its very hard to experience all things theater when we’re masked and have to social distance,” Bacon said.

She hopes others receive the vaccine.

“I definitely think that everyone should get the vaccine or at least some form of it,” she said.

“The faster we get the vaccine; the restrictions could lift.”

“If you hate masks get a shot in your arm, because then we don’t have to wear masks anymore,” she said.

Students react to senate fire-pit project u By Sullivan Jones News Editor

At its meeting last week, Student Senate allocated $158,500 for construction of a fire pit on CSC’s campus. Some students were unaware of the plan to allocate the money until it was already done, others were still unaware when asked about it this week.

The allocation, like all senate allocations, is funded by student activity fee money. That activity fee costs students $7 per credit hour up to a maximum of $84 per semester.

Reaction to the cost of the fire pit among asked students remained substantially similar, with most believing the cost was somewhat expensive.

One student, Hope Stone, junior from Maywood had not yet heard about the fire pit when asked Tuesday. Upon hearing a description of the project and its price, she expressed mild reception.

“I think it would be nice, but I feel like there was other ways they could have spent that much money,” Stone said.

She thinks Student Senate could be spending money on other things around campus for

students, like dorm improvements. She also says she would have liked to hear from senate before they voted to allocate money for the fire pit.

“I think it’s important for students to know money that they pay to the college, that essentially is student money, is going to something that everyone would use and would be beneficial for everyone, because some people don’t like fire pits or they won’t use it,” Stone said.

“So, I think it would be important for students to know that it’s going to be there and that is what their money is going toward.”

Another student, Isna Patel, a junior from Huntsville, Alabama, also had not heard about the Student Senate fire pit project, but says the project was an appropriate use of student money.

“I think that a fire pit will obviously be there for a while,” Patel said. “Knowing how cold it gets here, I think it will enable us to still be out and about.”

She thinks students will use the fire pit but still acknowledges it was a large sum of money allocated.

“It is a big chunk of money, but it’s not like they’re throwing it away – at least I hope they’re not throwing it away,” she said. “I hope

that they’ve been reasonable in their research that goes behind it.”

Jaylon Martinez, sophomore of Douglas, Wyoming, heard about the fire pit project after discussing with friends and being approached by his Student Senator of High Rise, Colton Brienza.

“I know a lot of people on my floor want it,” Martinez said. “It gives us something to do outside – be with our friends, have a good time around a fire, be with everyone here.”

Thomas Scherbarth, junior of Hay Springs, read about the project in the paper and likes the idea of the project but admits it is expensive.

“That’s a lot of money for something that I could do for less,” Scherbarth said. “I feel like that’s a lot just for a fire pit.”

Both Martinez and Scherbarth believe the design details and quality of construction will determine if the fire pit is worth the price tag.

They also believe Student Senate could have done more outreach to students before allocating the money.

“I think maybe they could have sent out an email survey or something like that because the only time I heard about it was in the paper and it had already been decided,”

Scherbarth said.

Scherbarth added that he hopes the fire pit is used by students.

“I hope it’s used, you know, because I feel like if it’s not it was a waste of $158,000.”

Cameron McClintock is a sophomore resident advisor in Andrews Hall. He heard about plans for the fire pit at a Residence Life Association meeting before senate allocated the money.

“I think it would be a pretty neat thing, you know; you can host events over at the fire pit, and students being able to use the fire pit; it’s nice,” McClintock said.

He thinks the fire pit seems slightly expensive, but like Martinez and Scherbarth, he believes the details will determine if the cost is reasonable.

“I think it’s a tiny bit pricey, but I don’t know the specifications behind really any of it I guess,” McClintock said.

He hopes senate reaches out to students for approval once they come up with an actual design for the fire pit.

“Getting approval from the students that are actually wanting to use that fire pit would be nice,” McClintock said.

Chadron state college Student Senate elections will occur April 22-24 noon to noon.

The last day for students to turn in executive and senatorial candidacy petition forms is April 8. Those forms may be turned in to a justice of the Constitutional Court.

Any student may run for any office so long as they meet the requirements listed on the candidacy petition form for each office.

After the election, new members will be sworn in at the April 26 Student Senate meeting. That meeting will be the last of the school year.

Occurring during the same week as Student Senate elections is homecoming king and queen voting. Clubs are to submit nominations for a king and queen candidate on or before April 12 to the Constitutional Court.

Voting will occur April 19-21 and the actual coronation will occur on April 21 at 6:30 p.m. in the Chicoine Center. The coronation will also be broadcast on CSC Live.

Election voting will be conducted online via SurveyMonkey.

Employees, students to receive second dose of vaccine CSC employees should have been contacted about receiving their second COVID-19 vaccination dose.

That second vaccination will occur April 7 in the Armstrong Gymnasium at a scheduled time from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

When will our lives have a chance to begin

I

was told that college would be some of the happiest years of my life when I was a kid. My parents and grandparents told me stories about all the fun things they had while getting their degrees. I thought that it would be a time where I had free time to explore the hobbies that I’ve always wanted to explore and go on crazy adventures that I would be able to tell my children about.

It hasn’t been like that at all.

Instead of picking up new hobbies, I am barely able to keep up with the interests I already had. Instead of going on adventures I am spending my free time doing the pile of work that I have for class.

I know I’m not the only one who is feeling like this. This week alone I have heard the phrase ‘it has been a week and it’s only Tuesday’ muttered around campus too many times to count. We are all working for the weekend at this point and even then we don’t get a break.

It’s not just happening to CSC students, college students all across America are crying out over the workload that colleges are expecting us to complete each week. All over America students are measuring their suc-

One choice shouldn’t cancel another u By Velvet Jessen Opinion Editor

Imagine you are at a roller coaster park with your friends and you’ve gone on a few smaller rides but they want to go on a bigger ride. You aren’t interested and don’t feel well so you wait near the line and hold the bags. Would it be okay for the person operating the line to force you onto the ride just because they saw you go on a small ride earlier?

If you have any common sense the answer is no. No, it is not okay to force people to do things they don’t want to do at the cost of their emotional distress.

Now a roller coaster might not be so bad, but forcing things on people doesn’t just happen with roller coasters.

Specifically I’m referencing the unanimous decision of the Minnesota Supreme Court, that a person cannot be convicted of rape(and it was rape) if the person who was raped were voluntarily drunk.

The court said that because they can’t just make the law whatever they wish it was, they had to rule what the law states can happen. I understand that they can’t just make or edit laws or their meanings at random. There is a process to do so. However, I question why the law permits this to happen.

The woman in this case, was blacked out and passed out on a couch when she was taken advantage of. She said she woke up on the couch when he was raping her and refused consent. She passed back out and woke up later with her shorts around her ankles.

Newspaper zaps brainpower Dear The Eagle, Or whatever bird you go by nowadays, I have a complaint to address with your paper and all newspapers across the nation.

As an American citizen I have the right to voice my opinion in saying that reporting what’s happening around local campuses and communities is dangerous.

The only true model of information We The People believe gives us insight to what is truly happening around us are advertisements.

Newspapers are dumb because you have to read them nobody got time or brainpower for that. However, advertisements are bright, glittery and

speak to us. Plus they tell us what we want and are polite enough to give me suggestions while I’m browsing Facebook or Eharmony.

When tragedy strikes, newspapers only report what’s happening, boring! But ads get a

bunch of high-class celebrities to speak for the victims, (who cares if those actors go back to their yachts) which I think is much more thoughtful and informative.

In essence, I think The Eagle needs a reform. Instead of reporting the news, the weekly paper should feature 16 pages of advertisements. To be honest, I think that would greatly benefit the students of Chadron State College.

To conclude, one must answer the question: What’s white and annoying at breakfast? The person who wrote this letter you’re reading.

This law has allowed a man to get off with a lesser charge of fifth degree rape, which is a gross misdemeanor, according to the Washington Post. The law has failed the woman in this case and rewarded another guilty man with lesser charges. The states with laws similar to this need to take a look at who this law benefits and make a change.

If changes aren’t made then any drinking becomes far riskier for women. Not only do women have to worry about their drinks being drugged, we must now worry that choosing to drink in any amount takes away our right to give and take away consent.

If we aren’t allowed to deny con-

sent after we choose to drink date rape statistics will soar. Under this law all a man has to do is appear nice enough for a woman to trust even a small drink around. Then once she’s had one drink any man can take advantage of her with no consequences.

It makes it comically easy for rapists to get away with their crimes.

We must stop blaming women and other victims for someone’s choice not to respect their choice not to consent.

I understand that right now the courts must follow the law as it currently is. The fact that it hasn’t been looked at or changed to fix this obvious hole, is what really bothers me. How many people has this law allowed to escape harder consequences, and how many victims did not receive the justice they deserve.

Hard professors are the best professors, maybe not short term but long-term.

I don’t mean those professors whose classes are impossible to pass or give too much homework, I mean those that challenge you.

My favorite professors are not ones whose classes I necessarily enjoy going to or one whose tests I barely have to study to pass or ones who rarely give homework.

The best professors are the ones that actually teach, I don’t mean just lecture but teach and teach you how to apply the things you learn to the real world.

A lot of students I know are really just going through life uninterested and if that’s not bad enough so are some of the professors.

As much as I enjoy a quiz with questions that even my little sister

Kamryn Kozisek could answer, in the long run how much information I am missing out on because teachers don’t want to make classes too hard.

I’m not saying we need more tests or homework, we have plenty of that, I’m saying that most of the homework that I do have is busy work at best and not made to help me in the future.

So I will stand by some of the professors that everyone complains about, because those are the professors that are really teaching.

David Lynch’s ‘Twin Peaks’ became a 90s television staple and a major influence in TV culture after its premier in 1990. When a local teenage girl’s body is found, the investigation to find her killer takes off with the help of a rather eccentric FBI agent.

This story of a prominent young girl’s murder entertwines with the odd and mystical secrets that the secluded Washington town holds. The show gives us many memorable characters, including the

town-named ‘Log Lady’ and the mysterious giant that appears only in visions.

The darkness of death mixes with a whimsical and wacky tone of magic forests and vague dreams, making for an interesting psychological thriller.

A break from the typical TV hero, the show’s leading characters opened the door for television writers today to explore more possibilities with characters and dark, intricate plots.

With Kyle MacLachlan’s Golden-Globe-Winning performance as Special Agent Dale Cooper leading the series, the audience knows that they are in for a tale that is ‘both wonderful and strange.’

‘Shades of Light’ opens March 17 u By CSC College Relations The Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center will host a show of about 50 pieces

by Rachel Brownlee, from Wednesday to May 21. Most of the items will be charcoal drawings, however, the exhibit also features a few oil paintings, one watercolor, some calligraphy, and a steam punk style leather skirt and corset.

Brownlee, a great-great niece of Mari Sandoz, graduated from the University of Nebraska Omaha with a degree in Information Technology Innovation in 2015. The self-taught artist and contract software engineer lives on the JHL cattle ranch north of Ashby with her husband and young daughter.

She will be available to speak with the public during three artist-in-residence sessions 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Sandoz Center: March 23, April 6, and May 11.

Holly Counts, who organized the exhibit, said Brownlee’s artwork is like the life and books of Sandoz, depicting western themes.

“Her work also includes Old World and fictional pieces, all of which are done in great detail. Rachel’s leatherwork comic-con outfit is reminiscent of Mari’s love for fashion and brown attire,” Counts said.

Brownlee was home schooled with her six siblings on her grandmother Celia (San-

doz) Ostrander’s Pine Creek Ranch about 20 miles south of Rushville. Celia is Mari’s niece.

“There was no art education program so I just started drawing horses. One of my sisters had a how to draw horses book. She gave me a drawing pencil and that was kind of the start of my career,” Brownlee said. “It was such a special pencil that I almost never used it. I still have it.”

She said her artwork focuses on displaying the nitty gritty side of agriculture.

“Most of the time I feel like this lifestyle is portrayed quite pastorally. I feel the real value of displaying agriculture artistically is the depth of meaning behind it, which is the wrinkles, the sweat, the chipped spurs, the rusty bits, and that’s what I try to portray in extreme realism. That’s my end goal,” Brownlee said She had visited the Sandoz Center several times in the past, and called a few months ago to ask if there was interest in hosting a show of her work. In addition to completing commissioned pieces, she does software consulting, has a software product she developed, and helps on the ranch.

“It’s really neat to bring the current generation of Sandoz talent into this Center.

Celia is 94 and talks about Mari all the time.

She’s very concerned with maintaining both the history of Mari and the reputation of the family,” Brownlee said.

Santa Clause, leprechauns, big foot, and werewolves; these all seem more realistic than dragons. However, our lack of belief did not stop a dragon who landed on the clock tower Saturday morning. The dragon, whose name we now know is Aldworth Wrythe, caused quite a fuss.

Although a dragon atop the clock tower isn’t a usual occurrence for csc, the college took it in stride. After being coerced off the tower by a burrito from the Eagle Market held by a courageous student, Festus Glaurung, Aldworth landed on the football field.

Once he landed on the field he introduced himself as Aldworth Wrythe and politely unwrapped and ate his burrito.

After finishing his burrito, Wrythe apologized for his manners and in advance for his ‘poor English’. According to Wrythe he had only started learning English after he turned 12000 years old, which only gives him a couple hundred years of practice. Despite his concerns, Wrythe took and answered ques-

tions by students and staff quite well.

Wrythe did not mean to cause a stir but said that he simply needed a place to rest during his trip to visit his northern cousins.

He claimed that he thought landing on the tower would allow him to rest without being in the way or causing too much damage. And aside from creating some heavy winds and scratching the clock tower a bit, he didn’t.

Not many places would have taken the sight of a multiple ton talking dragon so well but with the help of Glaurung, the surprise was taken in stride. Glaurung has an extensive knowledge of dragons passed down from his father, Norbert who was passed the knowledge by his father, Viserion. According to Glaurung, it was complete coincidence that he had chosen to get a burrito at the Eagle Market. Glaurung said he just hoped that the dragon would be okay with his offering.

As it turned out Wrythe was very mild mannered despite his appearance and the offering of a burrito was more than enough to convince him to move from the tower.

According to Wrythe, if he could have heard us better from the top of the tower he would have moved without incentive, but the burrito certainly helped to lead him where to go.

After the passing of the Open Atmosphere Act by the World Security Council, CSC says don’t ‘go home’ to out-of-this-world students.

Chadron State College became one of the first colleges to open their doors, to extraterrestrial students after the act went into effect in June 2020.

Alien students were welcomed in at the beginning of the fall 2020 semester. The act doesn’t require every college to open to otherworldly students, but hopes to vouch for intergalactic students that wish to live the human college experience.

CSC is proud to be one of the first colleges offering affordable education for their new farout students.

There are also plans for more planet and

galaxy specific scholarships to be made available to accommodate them. To enroll at CSC the new students adhere to the same requirements as their human peers.

To help make campus a more welcoming area for the new students, plans are being made to create another dorm area where extraterrestrial and earthling students can live while making the foreign students feel a little more at home.

In the new dorms there are plans to have a small garden area with approved plants native to other galaxies or planets.

The extraterrestrial students have easily blended with the other students on campus.

According to Aeleean E. Terra, “Everyone has been really accepting of us, and it’s interesting to see how humans spend their very short life.”

Terra says they are excited to continue their experiences on Earth and hopes that intergalactic travel and commerce continues to evolve.

Surfs Up: Eagle sports adds gnarly team u By Crush

Sea Extradinaire Chadron State hit the waves, adding another athletic team to the list.

Bringing in a new range of students with the National Scholastic Surfing Association, the Eagles take to the ocean to participate in surfing.

“This expansion is a big deal,” Head Surfing Coach Amber Jack said. “It might not seem like it, but it’s going to be sick. It will also expand our enrollment to include a completely new interest area.”

CSC’s Athletic Department will be expanding their finances to ensure that athletes would be able to arrive to the locations of competition, which is turned to any direction until they hit an ocean. A list of travel locations includes the Southwest, Northwest, Southeast, Northeast, Hawaii, Mid-Atlantic, Puerto Rico and the Caribbean.

The college has confirmed that there are already a handful of athletes that have already signed letters of intent.

“It’s totally radical,” Adrian Caspian, 19, sophomore of Jaco, Costa Rica, said. “I’ve always enjoyed surfing and I’m just excited to be able to participate in it at a college level.”

For people who don’t know, surfing competitions are accomplished with heats. A heat consists of two to four surfers, each surfer dressed in a

different colored lycra, the surfers that get the best results will continue on to next rounds, until the finals.

Surfers have 20 to 30 minutes each round to catch the best wave possible.

Each wave they catch is rated on a ten-point scale, and only the two best waves are counted, 20 points being the highest score attainable.

The judges analyze five major elements when they are evaluating a surfer’s wave. These are commitment and degree of difficulty; innovative and progressive maneuvers; combination of major maneuvers; variety of maneuvers; and speed, power and flow.

“Surfers have to be aware that they have to choose waves wisely because it isn’t the quantity of the wave they catch but the quality,” Jack said. “We have to make sure our athletes know that before we travel to our first destination.”

The team currently consists of Caspian; Olive Ridley, 21, junior of Pupukea, Hawaii; Wade Delmar, 18, freshman of Virginia Beach, Virginia; and Sandy Marlin, 18, freshman of Iowa City, Iowa.

With the current available equipment of the college, the surfers have had to turn to ways of practice they wouldn’t usually have.

“We’ve actually been using almost anything available,” Marlin said. “We usually try to get in the pool, but we’re usually kicked out by the high school swim team. Our coach has resorted to balance exercises on the football field.”

Chadron State College seems like a magically place to be for any student who received an acceptance letter. It’s a second place to call home and explore different sides to yourself like your ambitious or chivalrous sides.

It may sound like a fantasy but with the assistance of U.S. Chess Federation, English Chess Federation and French Chess Federation, Chadron State College officially had a Wizard’s chess team.

“As most people know, chess is a strategic skill game,” Head Chess Coach Isolt Sayre said. “Even though many people may believe it’s a boring game, it’s truly a tense scene that people will find captivating. Especially since the pieces move without lifting a single finger.”

With close resemblance to regular chess, the classic board game has one king, one queen, two rooks, two bishops, two knights and eight pawns and the game board being checkerboard with 64 squares.

The moves in this game are simple, you command your piece to move through a command instead of moving it yourself. The pieces will move by themselves through an enchantment. When a piece is taken from the board, the winning piece will simply smash the other piece violently.

“I promise the pieces will move,” James Wampus said, 20, junior of St. Louis, Missouri. “You won’t have to worry about looking ridiculous when you yell at the chessboard and nothing happens. It happens through Piertotum Locomotor.”

Participators command the pieces by saying the piece they want to move and to what location, like knight to E5.

The wizard’s chess team will be participating in their first competition, Saturday, April 31, at the Ilvermorny Chess Classic hosted in North Adams, Massachusetts.

Ag WMA renamed to honor conservationist u By Kamryn Kozisek Ag and Range Editor

Lee Rupp, 83 of Monroe, spent his life in Nebraska’s wild places.

In his youth, he spent a lot of his time hunting and fishing.

Rupp spent his life working outdoors as a fisheries biologist, state senator, outdoor writer and as a hunting and fishing guide.

During his career he dedicated his efforts to educating youth about hunting and fishing.

He worked for Nebraska Game and Parks Commission starting in 1972 for 11 years.

His efforts to spread conservation awarenesses spread to celebrities like Roy Rodgers, Jimmy Doolittle, Paul and Ron Evans.

By the 1980s, Rupp decided to get into politics, being elected as a state senator for District 22.

He used this position to create bills that would benefit Nebraska’s natural resources, including a bill to allow elk hunting in Nebraska.

He then taught at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln before retiring.

Rupp has written columns throughout his career and has continued to do so even into his retirement. His first article was published in The Columbus Telegram in 1976.

His dedication to conservation was recognized by the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, who named a Wildlife Management Area (WMA) after him.

The Lee Rupp WMA is located 1.5 miles south of Monroe.

AI school comes to CSC u By Kamryn Kozisek Ag and Range Editor

During spring break of the last few years, CSC has hosted an artificial insemination (AI) school.

The school is three days long. The first day is spent in the classroom learning the basics of cow reproduction, the next two are spent doing hands on work.

Savannah Solon, sophmore of Kadoka, South Dakota was one of two CSC students to attend the school. She was interested in the school because of her plans for the future.

This summer Solon plans on interning with the University of Nebraska in Scottsbluff as a rangeland management intern.

“It’s a good thing to have on my resume,” Solon said. “But mainly just so I can, hopefully, do that on my own herd, once I get that built.”

The second day of the class was held at the Rushville Extension Office and the third day was held at the Rushville sale barn.

Solon said that her favorite part of the school was the challenge it presented.

“Its a lot harder than it looks and harder than it sounds,” Solon said. “Finding the cervix can be really challenging and it’s the first thing you have to figure out” Like most things AI takes practice to get used to, but can still be challenging. The issues facing AI, changes from cow to cow based on development.

“It’s different because on a heifer the cervix is smaller,” Solon said. “On a cow that’s had a few calves there is scar tissue, that makes the cervix - Savannah Solon bigger.”

The second day was a day to practice and by the third day Solon said that she was able to get some cows bred.

Solon hopes to be able to use this back on her family’s ranch to avoid the cost of maintaining a bull.

“It’s something that I think could be profitable,” Solon said. “ With AI there are different ways to do everything with varying costs.”

Overall, Solon said she felt like the class will be something that will benefit her in the years to come.

“Its hard, because you are basically going in there blind .”

Sen. Steve Halloran introduced two new bills to the Nebraska Legislature.

Legislative bill (LB) 571 creates a registered backgrounding lots program similar to registered feedlots under the Livestock Protection Act. The bill also considers the fact that multiple owners of backgrounding lots by restricting the requirements for participation.

LB 572 makes edits to brand laws to allow for electronic inspection to be used as a form of brand inspection.

LB 572 also changes the fee program for the registered feedlot program. It will temporarily make physical inspection fees cheaper.

The bill also makes some edits to statutory maximums for brand recording fees.

It will also make several violations of the Brand Law as infractions.

LB 572 will allow dairies al-

ternate ways to follow brand laws with calves that are younger than 30 days.

The bill will redefined these terms; certified bill of sale, approved non-visual identifier, qualified dairy,audit, backgrounder, electronic inspection, enrollment, permanently fenced, physical inspection, certified transportation permit.

These bills are two of three big agriculture bills that been introduced into Nebraska Legislature in 2021.

Lake Minatare reopened to the public u By Kamryn Kozisek Ag and Range Editor

Lake Minatare has reopened to the public after being closed due to a large number of dead birds being reported near the lake, on March 12.

Lake Minatare is the largest body of water in the panhandle and serves as a stopping point for migratory bird species along

the Central Flyway. Nebraska had four avian death events like this one in 2020.

This event alone resulted in more avian deaths than the four last year. In 2020, 625 birds were killed. Some estimations about the Lake Minatare deaths are as high as 1,200. A majority of the dead birds were Canada geese and Mallard ducks.

The carcasses were gathered by state officials and sent off to be tested to determine cause of death. Six mallards were sent to the National Wildlife Health Center Laboratory, who

then sent samples to other labs.

The labs have yet to discover the exact cause of death, but Nebraska Game and Parks Commission has noted that there is little risk to the public.

Avian influenza, fowl cholera and contaminated water have all been ruled out as possible causes for the event.

All of the bird carcasses were immediately removed from the area, double bagged and were taken to the local landfill to be buried.

For their last regular season match, The Eagles played a long five set game against South Dakota School of Mines, losing to the No. 7 team in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. CSC holds a 4-10 record, 3-9 record in the RMAC, and they are ranked 13th in the conference.

The team started off the match with a win, taking the first set, 25-19. Making the second set difficult, the Eagle went into extra points, eventually losing the set, 26-24. The third and fourth sets went 25-22, but the two were split, pushing the match into the fifth set, the Hardrockers taking the set and the game, 15-4.

The Eagles had a total of 45 kills through the five sets, but the Hardrockers had 58.

Eagles begin outdoor season u By Mackenzie Dahlberg Sports Editor

The Eagles participated in their first outdoor track meet since 2019, earning eight placements, Saturday, at the Spank Blasing Invitational Track and Field Meet in Pueblo, Colorado.

“I was really happy with our results for the first meet,” Head Track and Field Coach Riley Northrup said in a message to the Eagle. “We had several top 10 CSC marks and a bunch of PRs.” The Eagles continued their success in the jumping events, carrying over from the indoor track season.

Indoor All-American Naishaun Jernigan, sophomore of Springfield, Massachusetts, marked his furthest jump at 23 feet, 7.25 inches in the long jump, finishing fourth.

Derrick Nwagwu, sophomore of Aurora, Colorado, finished fourth in the triple jump, with a leap of 48 feet, 7.25 inches.

Jourdaine Cerenil, freshman of Pine Bluffs, Wyoming, took fourth in the high jump after clearing 5 feet, 3 inches.

Miranda Gilkey, junior of Lusk, Wyoming, finished tied for fifth in the long jump with 5 feet, 1 inch. Alec Penfield, sophomore of Lusk, Wyoming, snuck into eighth place in the high jump, clearing 6 feet, 4.75 inches.

Quest Savery, freshman of Miles City, Montana, took fourth in the season’s first javelin competition with a throw of 183 feet.

Also in the throws, Dylan Soule, freshman of Polk, threw the javelin 159 feet, 5 inches, placing him eighth place for his first javelin competition in his career.

Osvaldo Cano, sophomore of Oshkosh; Osiel Cano of

Oshkosh; Harley Rhoades junior of Douglas, Wyoming; and Greg Logsdon freshman of Torrington, Wyoming, took fifth in the 4x400 meter relay with a time of 3:21.24.

“I could tell everyone was enjoying the sunshine and being back on the track and in the field competing,” Northrup said.

Another set of athletes traveled to Spearfish, South Dakota for the Yellow Jackets Spring Open Meet at Black Hills State.

The jump events for the Eagles were highly successful in Spearfish as well. Destiny Pelton, freshman of Fort Morgan, Colorado, won the high jump, clearing 5 feet, 1 inch.

Javan Lanier, graduate of Aurora, Colorado, jumped 22 feet, 7.25 inches in the long jump, finishing fourth.

Joss Linse, junior of Plattsmouth, finished fifth in the triple jump with his farthest mark, 44 feet, 8.25 inches. Joe Dumsa, junior of Sandy, Utah, cleared 6 feet, 2.25 inches and finished third in the high jump.

The Eagles are scheduled to continue their season at the Central Nebraska Challenge Meet in Kearney, Saturday.

“It’s tough having a Sunday meet because of the time constraints heading into the next week,” Northrup said.

“Our team is tough, and I have full confidence they won’t let a small adjustment like that (short week) impact their performances.”

Kincaid Strain, junior of Elk River, Minnesota, and Breshawna Kelly, junior of Casper, Wyoming, both set 18 times each for a kill. Strain also earned points with a kill of her own and an ace serve, along with eight digs. Kelly dug 12 attacks, earning a kill of 10 attacks.

Defensively, Chandler Hageman, senior of Chadron, and Lexi Hurtado, sophomore of Aurora, Colorado, assisted with the most blocks, earning six each.

Hageman killed eight of her 24 attacks, earned a set and three digs. Hurtado killed six attacks and served an ace, digging 13 attacks and earning an assist for a set.

Rylee Greiman, sophomore of Windsor, Colorado, led the Eagles in digs with 15. Greiman also killed four of her 23 attacks and earned an assist.

Karli Noble, senior of Cheyenne, Wyoming, dug 13 attacks, earned herself an assist, and scored a point with an ace serve.

It has yet to be released if the Eagles will be continuing into the postseason.

The spring 2021 RMAC Volleyball Tournament will begin Thursday, April 8, at Grand Junction, Colorado.

CSC is near the bottom of the RMAC standings, and the top eight teams will be placed into the tournament brackets. The RMAC will use a performance indicator formula to determine the strength of a teams wins and loses due to uneven schedules, much like basketball.

Eagles happen in Vegas but they didn’t stay in Vegas.

The Eagles finished the weekend’s series against New Mexico Highlands with the majority of the games, 3-1, in Las Vegas. The Eagles now hold a 7-13 record, with a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference record of 7-9.

The team started the weekend with a win Saturday, 9-2.

In the second inning, Bailey Marvel, redshirt sophomore of Lakewood, Colorado, was walked, advancing the base runners, and bringing Ellie Owens, redshirt senior of Longmont, Colorado, in for a run.

Following Marvel, Jessie Henchenski, freshman of Fort Collins, Colorado, hit a single to right center, advanced to second and earned two RBIs. Henchenski brought in Samantha Conradie, freshman of Broomfield, Colorado, and Mackenzi Kroll, redshirt freshman of Brighton, Colorado.

Kroll homered to center field in the third inning, bringing herself, Owens and Micah Stouffer, redshirt freshman of Rushville, home.

Scoring in the fifth inning started with a homer from Stouffer to center field. Kroll followed with another homer down the left field line, bringing in runs from Owens and herself.

Pitching in the first game for the Eagles was Tia Kohl, redshirt junior of Wichita, Kansas.

She faced 28 at bats, pitched five strikeouts, six hits, and two runs through the seven innings of the game. Kohl pitched two errors, hitting a batter once with a pitch, with 11 fly outs and five ground outs.

In their second Saturday game, the Eagles lost, 4-2, to the Cowgirls, struggling to score until the last inning.

In the seventh inning, Owens brought in Quijas, redshirt freshman of Erie, Colorado, with a single to left centerfield, the first run for the Eagles.

Kroll made it to base following an error by left field, advancing to second while Owens ran home for another run.

Peyton Propp, freshman of Lakewood, Colorado, began the game as pitch, pitching the first three innings. Propp pitched 14 at bats, with five hits, four runs, and four walks. She pitched one errors, four fly outs and five ground outs.

Returning to Highlands University softball field Sunday to play extra innings in both games but finishing both games victorious.

For their third game in the series, The Eagles played nine innings, eventually taking the game by a run following a fielder error, 5-4.

In the second inning, Stouffer homered to left center, earning the first run of the game for the Eagles.

Moving into the sixth inning, Owens walked, advancing the runners to bringing Angelica Maples, senior of Marysville, California, home. Spears singled to shortstop, advancing runners, and bringing in Ali Conder, junior of Fernley, Nevada, for a run. Conradie was walked, moving Spears and Owens, and allowing Stouffer to score.

Going extra innings into the ninth, Stouffer made it to base following an error by shortstop, advancing Quijas to third and Marvel scored, brining the Eagles ahead and winning the game.

Kohl pitched the full nine innings for Sunday’s first game, pitching 36 at bats. She pitched three strike outs, three walks, and nine hits with

four runs eventually earned by New Mexico Highlands. She pitched four errors, and hit two batters, with 14 fly outs and 10 ground outs.

The last game of the series remained scoreless until the eighth inning, when the Eagles scored four runs, winning three of the four games played over the weekend.

Kroll started the scoring for the Eagles with a single to left field, batting in Ellie Owens for the run and advance Spears to second base.

Following was a singe to centerfield by Conradie, advancing Kroll to second and bringing Spears in for a run.

Quijas hit a single, eventually advancing herself to third with in field throws. Marvel and Conradie added two more runs to the scoreboard.

Propp pitched all eight innings of the game, striking out eight batters, walking two. There were two hits on her pitches, but there were no runs scored. Propp had a wild pitch and hit a batter once. She faced 29 batters, with six fly outs and 10 ground outs.

After previous home postponements, The Eagles will host a series of doubleheaders against MSU-Denver, two games Friday starting at noon and two games Saturday, starting at 11 a.m.

Sports Segelke earns a second all-around cowgirl 16

Quincy Segelke, senior of Douglas, Wyoming, earned all-around cowgirl again after placing in two of her events at the Eastern Wyoming College rodeo in Torrington, Wyoming.

“There is always room for improvement but the guys that are on the team are hungry and are doing their best every week,” Rowdy Moon, senior of Sargent, said in a message. “I really enjoy

watching the guys on the team do well. We all crave success.”

Having to place in two events to earn allaround points, Segelke finished second overall in breakaway roping and third in goat tying. She finished fourth in both rounds of the breakaway with runs of 2.7 and 3.1 seconds, finishing second overall. In goat tying, she tied first and second in the first go-round in 7.2 seconds and tied for third and fourth the second go-round in 7.7 seconds, giving her third place overall.

Tanner McInerney, junior of Alzada, Mon-

tana, finished second overall in tie-down roping, finishing third both rounds with times of 10.4 and 11.4 seconds.

Moon scored 67 and 65 points in bareback riding, finishing fourth.

“I was strong at the beginning of my rides,” Moon said. “I just needed to finish my rides strong and I would have placed better in the average.”

Carson Good, senior of Long Valley, South Dakota, wrestled his steer down in 5.1 and 7.5 seconds in his go-rounds, earning fourth place.

Hanna Hostutler, senior of Philip, South Dakota, teamed up with Casper College cowgirl Sadie Podzimek, sophomore of Lulow, South Dakota, to finish fourth in the team roping, being the only all girls team to place in the top 10 with times of 11.8 and 7.5 seconds.

Brianna Williams, senior of Buffalo, South Dakota, finished sixth in goat tying, timed for 7.8 and 8.4 seconds.

The rodeo team will continue April 16-18, to Casper College Ropin’ and Riggin’ Days Rodeo at Casper College, Wyoming.
