Drama dominates senate election u By Aubrie Lawrence Editor

As the Student Senate presidential race comes to a close, more drama surrounding the two presidential candidates surfaced during the Student Senate meeting Monday as both campaigns are accused of stealing promotional signs.

Chief Justice Nathan Cronin presented that on Friday, the Student Senate Constitutional Court

issued a cease-and-desist to presidential candidate Sullivan Jones, 20, sophomore of Papillion, after evidence of him and his campaign team removing campaign signs for candidate Isioma Akwanamnye, senior of Lagos, Nigeria. The cease-and-desist served as a warning to the Jones team. He would not be removed from the ballot unless further evidence of him stealing campaign signs was presented to the court.

“Based on the evidence presented to the chief justice by both students and staff, you and/ or your campaign staff have taken down posters from the

other candidate in the election race,” the cease-anddesist stated. “Whether it was you doing this act or your campaign staff (regardless of if your staff was acting under your orders or not) is not acceptable behavior for the Student Senate elections.”

On Sunday, Jones petitioned the court with the accusations that the Akwanamyne team had also removed campaign signs and that she should be disqualified from the election and her name removed from the ballot.

u From NSCS Office Chadron, Peru, and Wayne State College students who are Pell-eligible or have an expected family contribution (EFC) of $10,000 or less are eligible to receive an additional $3,000 in Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund (HEERF) III financial assistance during the 2021-22 academic year.

“The State Colleges serve a large number of Pell-eligible and low-income students and families, and the federal response provides these students additional financial support which removes an economic barrier that allows them to focus on completing their degree,” said Dr. Paul Turman, Chancellor of the Nebraska State College System (NSCS).

The additional financial support is available to all eligible undergraduate students who are enrolled full-time at the Nebraska

State Colleges for Fall 2021 term. The support is available to resident and non-resident students. Students can use the grant for any part of the cost of attendance or for emergency costs that arise due to Coronavirus, such as tuition, food, housing, health care (including mental health), and childcare.

The funds will be awarded in addition to any scholarships, or financial aid students have earned from Chadron, Peru, or Wayne State.

The additional financial relief is available through the State Colleges’ commitment to prioritize HEERF III allocations made available through the American Rescue Plan (third round of stimulus funding). Chadron, Peru, and Wayne State have designated the student aid component and a portion of the institutional funding component of HEERF III for this initiative.

For example, a Nebraska resident student who qualifies for the Nebraska State College System Guarantee program (free tuition)

and receives the latest round of HEERF III financial assistance in the fall could attend either Chadron, Peru, or Wayne State for about $6,800 (53 percent less than the cost of attendance) for the 2021-22 academic year.

Prior HEERF funding was distributed to students during the Spring 2020 (first round) and Spring 2021 (second round) terms.

These new funds will be distributed during the Fall 2021 term.

Students who have not completed their 2021-22 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) should go to studentaid.gov to complete the application process. If students have questions or wish to discuss special circumstances related to their FAFSA, they should contact the financial aid office at their respective College.

Second student COVID dose scheduled for April 28 in Armstrong Gymnasium Students who received their first Moderna vaccine on March 30, 31 should receive their second dose on Wednesday, April 28, in the Armstrong Gymnasium.

No appointment is necessary for the vaccine, but students should bring their vaccination record card. Students may

show up any time between 12 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.

The Lincoln Police Department conducted a recruitment operation during some justice studies classes Monday at CSC. Lincoln Police Officer Jason Hellmuth spoke with students about his work and what it takes to be a law enforcement officer during Justice Studies Professor Jamie Wada’s classes.

Later in the day, students had the opportunity to speak one-on-one with Hellmuthth if they wanted.

The visit was the first recruiting visit to the school for Hellmuth, who said it was only fair for him to travel to Chadron.

“We’re seven hours away; I can’t expect you to make the trip so maybe I should,” Hellmuth said.

He says he hopes to make a more lasting connection with the school and possibly

make another trip to Chadron in the fall.

“I think that we as a department probably have some goals to try and create a more permanent connection,” he said.

Hellmuth has 31 years of law enforcement experience including time as a jail officer before joining LPD in 2000. Since then, he has served various assignments with the department.

“I’ve been a little bit of everything,” he said. “I’ve been an investigator, I’m a crime scene investigator, I’ve been an education and personnel officer before, and I’ve done this same assignment once before.”

Much of his current assignment consists of training department officers.

“Currently I am assigned as an education personnel officer,” he said. “That means I am the continuing education and community services officer. I also currently am assigned to the crime scene unit for the police department, and I am an academy in-service instructor – meaning I teach senior cops

and cops-to-be.”

He brought his experience to discuss with students what law enforcement agencies look for in their recruits and current officers-in-training.

“I love teaching new cops. Giving them the little bit of insight that I can give them about what they’re going to have to do.”

That insight includes three pieces of advice to students looking for a career in law enforcement.

“The ability to communicate, honesty and creativeness,” he said. “Those three things – when I sit down with a person to interview them for the job, they can impress me and show me that they have great grades, they have this and they have that – show me something that sets you apart from great grades.”

Asked what a common issue for new officers is, he said a propensity to rush through situations can cause new officers to make mistakes.

“There is a push to go to a call, get it done and go to the next one,” he said. “Good or bad, for some that doesn’t work, but some hurry too fast and that’s kind of where I see things going bad. The ones I’ve always had to correct, I’ve literally had to reign in; slow down, think about what you’re going to go do – especially in tense situations, physical situations.”

Among other things learned through his experience as a police officer is the importance of caring about the job.

“I have had so many experiences that make me realize just how much of a benefit having somebody who cares about the job in this position is to the community as a whole.”

To him, that community appreciates the benefit served by law enforcement.

“Even after the summer of riots, our city overall respects us and appreciates what we do, and we appreciate them.”

“I wouldn’t take down his posters or whatever because I want people to vote for me,” Awanamyne said. “That’s not the kind of president I want to be and that’s not values I hold. I believe that, as long as he doesn’t have proof to say that I did it they’re all lies, and people shouldn’t vote based on lies.

They should vote on the truth and the facts of the case.”

Jones said that his petition was a “formal” and “symbolic” way to let Awanamyne know that his campaign was dealing with the same thing.

A court case between Jones and Akwanamyne was opened and on Monday the Student Senate Constitutional Court made the unanimous decision to reject the petition to remove Akwanamyne from the ballot, citing

that the petition was not completed because there was no evidence of removal in the petition and no witnesses had come forward, and that the court case would be dismissed.

Jones said in an interview that he did have proof, however believed the petition was misapplied.

“We have proof that some signs where we’ve taken pictures and the next day we’ll walk through and they’ll be gone,” Jones said. “Specifically, one day in the Admin building I walked up to go to class Saturday morning and other people commented on my signs that were there. Then, a group of students walked through afterwards, and the signs were gone. It is difficult to say that it was her or her campaign, because there was a large

Student Senate impeaches senator; senator says she asked to be removed u By Aubrie Lawrence Editor

Student Senate added another name to the list of senators impeached this semester during its meeting Monday.

Vice President Abigail Klammer moved to impeach Senator at Large Brandy Friedrichsen, 20, of Boelus, for abusing the attendance bylaw for Student Senate. Friedrichsen reportedly had unexcused absences in January, on Feb 15 and Feb. 22. The absences resulted in a court order from the Student Senate Constitutional Court that required Friedrichsen to follow all the attendance bylaw for the remainder of the semester.

On March 29, Friedrichsen missed the general assembly, breaking the attendance policy and the court order. The petition for impeachment was served to Friedrichsen, who did not respond within the allotted two day period.

The Constitutional Court recommended to impeach Friedrichsen from Student Senate.

In a unanimous vote, Senators Isioma Akwanamnye, Meron Ameha, Chioma Asielue, Colton Brienza, Olivia Bryant, Jennifer Campos, Laura Clay, Kelsey Crock, McKenna Juhlin, Elham Zeinuddin, Siddhant Shelke, and Toni Lopez voted in favor of impeachment.

However, Friedrichsen had asked to be removed long before the impeachment.

“I moved away and I asked them to remove me,” Friedrichsen said.

“They didn’t do that so they just impeached me for attendance.”

Along with the impeachment, the Wildlife Club and Farm Bureau requested $30,000 to host Chance Williams and the William Brothers. The concert, which would be held Sept.

18 after the home rodeo, would be on the rodeo grounds and free for all students. The public would also be able to attend. Funds would be used to pay the band, book a hotel room, and rent a stage.

AFB recommended an allocation of the full amount; however the discussion was tabled until next week to give senators a chance to think things over and talk to students.

“AFB thought this would be a good thing for students, especially after the rough year with the pandemic,” Vice President of Finance Feven Hailemariam said. “Opening up the year with a concert would be a really good idea.”

“I want to be able to run and even if I don’t win I want to be able to stay on senate and do all of the things I do because I love my job as a senator and I want to be able to represent my constituents to the best of my ability,” Awanamyne said. “I’m running for president because I want a bigger platform to do the job I already do. I just want people to understand that.

I don’t want this election to divide campus, there’s already a division around so I don’t want to make that gap any wider.”

Reproductive rights are more than a choice

E

very time I drive home to my heavily religious state, I pass signs saying things like “Smile, your mom chose life” or “When an abortion happens two hearts break”. Seeing these when I was younger didn’t mean anything to me but now that I’m old enough to have an opinion these billboards annoy me.

I’d like to preface this with the fact that I am Catholic, and was raised Catholic in the belief that all abortions are wrong. As I’ve grown and become more educated, it’s harder to see in that black and white. Abortions are very rarely the flippant decision I was originally taught to believe they were.

Abortions don’t just happen because someone didn’t use protection, there are many valid reasons to have an abortion. Sometimes abortions are a choice of whether or not you want the mom to live.

In the case of ectopic pregnancies the baby will not live, but if the pregnancy is not aborted and the mother is not taken care of, she will die.

Abortions can be for medical reasons or because they cannot afford to take care of a baby or do not have the support to do so.

Now some people would say that the woman can carry the baby to term and then give it up for adoption. This would ideally be a good way

As They See It

Democracy requires words and wisdom u By Sullivan Jones Staff editor

The social contract is an agreement among citizens to sacrifice some of their individual rights for the benefit of society. To be effective, this agreement requires citizens to socially engage with each other through civil discourse.

America’s social contract is created through democratic practices of voting, citizen involvement in government and conversation among members of the public. These days, citizen involvement and conversation are sparse. Turn in any direction and you will notice ineffective conversation or won’t notice any conversation at all, because it isn’t there.

Our politicians refuse to openly discuss issues that will affect an entire nation; our neighbors don’t speak across the fence about

the day’s events; family members can’t stand a Thanksgiving dinner together anymore because they’ve become so polarized; and students sit on their phones and computers while their teacher lectures.

This lack of social interest and avoidance of uncomfortable situations does nothing more than further polarize people from society and those they may disagree with, which is not good for our democracy.

On that point, when people avoid each other, it follows that discussion is ceased, and when people are uninterested, discussion is ineffective. Consequently, democracy cannot function.

The cure to the issue of ineffective discussion is simple: find some way to care about relevant things and talk to people who don’t think exactly like you do.

While that cure seems simple, prescribing the right medication

Especially one where so many people care so little about things that don’t directly affect them.

Indeed, many times I find myself fired up about a current issue only to see my friends lackadaisical in response, and their apathy dumbfounds me when considering how necessary political discourse is to

the success of our democracy.

Lack of discourse is the most direct cause of long-term political turmoil in a democracy. This is because the small issues that most people don’t care about eventually pile up and require drastic action to solve rather than slight actions taken over time.

Hence, only when the problem reaches a boiling point does one side gain enough people’s interest to exercise a majority tyranny to drastically change long standing norms. This change naturally shocks the other side, and all the sudden they react by jumping from their slumber of inquisivity.

In essence, every issue in the US seems to be on a pendulum swaying from side to side with each political party that gains enough congressional seats, the oval office or cloaks in the high court.

with fellow Americans will inevitably force compromise at every level of our government. Nonetheless, that sort of real engagement requires that we discuss issues with people we disagree with.

Still, doing so will not cause us to lose face, but we may better understand their positions, beliefs and reasoning. In turn, we may actually be able to convince them that our own reasoning is the best solution to a problem.

COVID-19 guidelines should remain a choice u By Drew R. Hester Contributor

We are all aware of the infamous COVID-19 virus by now as it has affected the entire nation, as well as many of us personally in different manners.

While I believe we have a duty to protect our fellow people, when does it come down to having a personal choice as to what we have been mandated by the federal and local government to do?

At this time, masks are mandated by the Nebraska State College System with no end in sight, but if you are like me, you are tired of wearing them and would like to know a potential answer as to

when they will not be required any longer.

When it comes to the COVID-19 vaccines, I am more than happy to see that they have finally reached our rural corner of Nebraska; however, I feel that receiving the vaccinations should always remain a personal choice for each person to make.

Although I have not been told by anyone at CSC that I must take a vaccine, I have noticed in classroom settings, as well as in passing of hallways and buildings, more than several professors repetitively promoting the idea that we students should receive the vaccine so that we may hopefully get to return to a normal school setting in the fall semester.

seem like students cannot return to a normal setting in the fall if they decide not to receive a COVID-19 vaccine.

The idea of it makes me uncomfortable because injecting something into your body is a rather permanent ordeal, which should be taken very seriously.

With that said, I hope everyone does ample research into any vaccine they are considering before receiving it.

As you may have heard, the Johnson & Johnson vaccine was recalled last week because of potential adverse health effects.

This was only caught after over four million doses were already administered to the general public.

Hence, it does feel like there is a mainstream rush to get the vaccination simply for the good of the people, without asking any questions about the vaccine itself.

Our federal health guidelines seem to flip flop daily, and after “15 days to flatten the curve” here we are over 365 days later.

Furthermore, I have watched many interviews with Dr. Anthony

Fauci, and he states that even after receiving a vaccine, masks must still be worn and limited public exposure is still key.

This leads to my previous question of when will the health guidelines end if there is seemingly no reward for getting the vaccine?

I personally will not be receiving the vaccine at any time. If you ask me why, my answer will always be that I don’t feel it’s necessary for a virus with a 96-98% survival rate.

Essentially, I believe everyone has the right to personal choices and personal freedoms and should be allowed to express these.

The environment of CSC should always be welcoming to all students to share these choices, values, and beliefs without fear of discrimination.

Theatre department’s ‘To Die For’ was to die for The play captivated, bewitched audiences via computer screens  By Erin Hayhurst Contributer

While CSC’s performance of ‘To Die For’ by Caroline Smith is the theatre’s final regular performance for the year, it was not one I am likely to forget.

With costumes and a set that brings the story to life and actors that keep your eyes glued to the stage, I was on the edge of my seat for the entirety of the show.

The play followed the life of an estranged author named Carla Woods, portrayed by CSC freshman Olivia Freeze, 19, of Bridgeport. Freeze’s performance makes for a character that is both startling and extremely entertaining.

While Carla Woods is the trickster of the story, many of the twists and turns are the result of the characters Grace- played by Halle Smith, 19, a freshman of Wheatland, Wyoming- and Edward- played by Jarret Photo by Mackenzie Dahlberg Buchholz, 20, sophomore of Arnold.

he Chicoine Center hadn’t been full in months when about 400 volunteers gathered there Saturday to participate in The Big Event. Rain or shine, they were prepared to dig in and get dirty to help the Chadron community.

And that’s exactly what they did.

“At some places it was still possible, yardwork, painting, fixing fences, trash clean up, maybe some sweeping, dusting,” Kaci Waugh, a communication graduate student tasked with helping with The Big Event, said. “Snow removal, some would do that. I know some indoor job sites had different tasks like vacuuming cleaning or cleaning chairs, sorting, and organizing. Just different tasks like that.”

Due to the recent bouts of snowfall, the number of jobsites that volunteers would be working at went from 50 to 25.

“I think we were still able to make a really positive impact and I don’t think its hurt our volunteer’s experience in anyway,” Waugh said. “If anything, we are a little disappointed that we couldn’t get out to some of those job sites that we typically are able to serve and some of our reoccurring people who we missed last year and would just like to see again, but I really don’t think it negatively impacted any of our volunteer’s experience or the day in general.”

This year, Nebraska State College System Chancellor Paul Turman was able to pitch in and volunteer. He had been invited for the past three years but because of weather and the pandemic, he was unable to make the trip across Nebraska.

“We’re really excited to have him and we know that he obviously values community service and things like that so it was right in line with The Big Event,” Waugh said. “I also think it was a great opportunity for him to see a mixture of students, faculty, staff, community, administrators, all of those things that make up our little campus and college community.”

Many of the students that volunteered were freshmen, Communication Associate Professor and adviser to The Big Event Shaunda French-Collins said.

Alexa Shald, 18, freshman of O’Neill, was one of those students.

“From helping at the Big Event, I took away the importance of giving back to the community,” Shald said. Volunteering is very important to me. I would like to make it a regular thing for myself.”

Shald had planned on joining on volunteering on her own, however, she ended up joining the Health Professions Club when she found out they would be helping out. Shald said she enjoyed getting the chance to meet new people while also helping out the community.

A large part of The Big Event is bringing CSC students and staff together to help give back to the Chadron community. Dalton Holst, 23, senior of Gillette, Wyoming, usually leads his team on the football field.

On Saturday, though, he spent the day working alongside his fellow football players.

“The work goes by faster and the camaraderie is better than doing work by yourself,” Holst said. “Volunteering as a team brings you closer together and allows the team to give back to the community. No one person or team is above helping and giving back. It is such as small task and small portion out of our lives to thank the community and town for all that they do for college students. Being grateful for such a welcoming and warm town like Chadron is something I will always take away from the Big Event.”

“From the bottom of my heart, thank you so much,” Waugh said.

“I really hope that everybody enjoyed their experience and got something out of it that was positive, whether that was meeting more community members that they’ve never meet or just seeing those faces that support the college and are here for us throughout the year. I’m just really grateful that so many people were patient and helpful and that attendance was so good with even the challenges we faced. Thank you and we hope that you will become involved with the big event in future years.”

The Open Fields and Waters Program, provides private landowners with an annual payment in exchange for hunters and fishermen to have access to the land.

There are five types of land programs that open access land can be including Conservation Reserve Program, Wetland Reserve Program Easement, grasslands, woodlands and fishing, according to the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission.

Conservation Reserve Program land can be worth up to

$10 per acre depending on overall land quality.

Wetland Reserve Program Easements are paid by the number of accessible acres on the land, each acre is worth $15.

Grasslands and woodlands that are good for hunting opportunities are also considered. Lands that have upland game bird species and big game species. Woodlands are worth $5-$15 an acre, according to Nebraska Game and Parks Commission.

Fishing access to pond, rivers, lakes or streams are paid per stream mile or surface area of standing bodies of water.

Last year Open Fields and Waters Program brought in 850 private landowners including about 372,000 walk-in hunting areas and 500 pond acres.

There are less than 700,000 acres in Nebraska that are public, in Dawes County 97% of all lands are private.

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission reported that every three in five hunters use public lands over private.

The Recreation Liability Act protects private land owners if hunters or fishermen entering the land were injured or killed.

Landowners can apply by calling a local Nebraska Game and Parks Commission Office. Property evaluations will occur in the spring with property contracts being issued by June 1. Boundary signs are then applied by Nebraska Game and Parks Commission staff.

Landowners are paid in the spring after fall hunting seasons close.

Take a gamble on the 2021 bighorn sheep lottery.

Nebraska residents are eligible to enter the lottery which opened on April 19 and closes Aug. 6, according to Nebraska Game and Parks Commission.

One lottery permit and one auction permit were approved for this season.

According to Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, a $29 ap-

plication fee is required to be put into the lottery. Applications can be found on the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission offices and at https://ngpc-home.ne.gov/ps/faces/ index.xhtml;jsessionid=DD267CB9B193EC9BF6C6124D25AA95FB. Hunters age 12-29 need to have completed a hunter safety class.

Hunters over the age of 16 will need a Nebraska habitat stamp unless, the hunter holds a veteran or senior (over age 69) permit according to Nebraska Game and Parks Commission.

This is the 23 year that bighorn sheep have been hunted in the state since the extinction of the subspecies Audubon bighorn sheep in the 1900s.

Since then five other reintroduction attempts were made in, 1988, 2001, 2005, 2007 and 2012.

Track and field added another competition to their schedule, Sunday. They traveled to Kearney again for the Loper Invitational and finished with three champions.

“This past weekend was huge for our team,” Head Track and Field Coach Riley Northrup said in a message to The Eagle. “This was the meet that a lot of athletes finally achieved what we knew they were capable of, making it a huge confidence booster for the athlete’s going into conference championships next weekend.”

There was a list of improvements throughout the weekend.

There were four NCAA provisional marks, 26 season personal records, many being lifetime bests.

Shane Collins, sophomore of Bison, South Dakota, out threw the competition in discuss, winning the event with a throw of 164 feet, 4 inches. In the hammer throw, Collins threw 189 feet, 6 inches, placing him second.

“Shane’s performance was very exciting,” Northrup said. “Not only were they big improvements on his previous best marks, but both of them are national provisional qualifying marks.”

Northrup said he hopes to continue seeing Collins improve, especially since he’s in his freshman year and Northrup is confident that Collins will be able to participate in several national meets.

Morgan Fawver, sophomore of McCook, placed third in two events, 100 meters at 10.69 seconds and 200 meters at 22.22 seconds.

Brodie Roden, junior of Riverton, Wyoming, won the 400 meters with a time of 47.56 seconds.

Osvaldo Cano, sophomore of Oshkosh, finished third in the 400 meters, marked at 48.83 seconds.

CSC relays continued its success in two events.

The 4x100 relay ran by Fawver; Emory Yoosook, freshman of

Casper, Wyoming; Osvaldo Cano, sophomore of Oshkosh; and Roden, took first with a time of 41.31 seconds.

Osiel Cano, sophomore of Oshkosh, Osvaldo Cano, Harley Rhoades, junior of Douglas, Wyoming, and Roden teamed up together for the 4x400 relay, finishing with a time of 3:16.54, placing them second.

Creighton Trembly, freshman of Longmont, Colorado, took the runner-up spot in the 110 hurdles, timed at 15.33 seconds.

Quest Savery, freshman of Miles City, Montana, took third in the javelin with a throw of 189 feet, 9 inches.

In the triple jump, Derrick Nwagwu, sophomore of Aurora, Colorado, took second with a leap of 48 feet, 4.75 inches, while Joss Linse, junior of Plattsmouth, finished fourth at 46 feet and 2 inches.

Michaela Hill, sophomore of Eaton, Colorado, finished fourth in the 200 meters, timed at 26.96 seconds and fifth in the 100 meters at 13.03 seconds.

Trinity Chrisawn, freshman of Rock Springs, Wyoming, finished fourth in the shot put with a throw of 39 feet, 6.5 inches. Julianne Thomsen, junior of Custer, South Dakota, took fifth in the javelin, throwing 118 feet, 9 inches.

Courtney Smith, sophomore of Rock Springs, Wyoming, took fifth in the shot put and discus, throwing the shot 38 feet, 11 inches and the discus 121 feet, 7 inches. Smith also took sixth in the javelin, marked at 96 feet, 8 inches.

In the triple jump, Austin Alexander, freshman of Newell, South Dakota, leaped 32 feet, 8.25 inches, placing her fourth.

Chadron State will have a week to prepare for their trip to Pueblo, Colorado, Saturday, May 1, for the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships meet.

“Preparing for RMACs, we’ll focus on making sure the athletes are fresh and recovered,” Northrup said.

Quincy Segelke, senior of Douglas, Wyoming, takes another rodeo, earning herself all-around cowgirl for a third time this season.

“It has been very bittersweet this spring with it being my last semester of college rodeo,” Segelke said in a message to The Eagle. “My goal this year was to make every short round in at least one of my events. This spring season has so far been that and even more.”

Segelke stated that the all-around is an honorable award and she’s so grateful to have won it three times.

Segelke finished second in breakaway roping, setting times at 2.7 and 3.0 seconds. In goat tying, her times were 7.5 and 8.6 seconds, placing her seventh.

“Overall, our team had a great rodeo,” Segelke said.

“Our men’s team showed very well this weekend. We are all excited to finish the season with a bang these next two weekends!”

The CSC men’s team scored 395 points.

“The men’s team has been stepping it up in the last few weeks,” Head Rodeo Coach Dustin Luper said in a message.

“Rowdy Moon in the bareback riding is our anchor and seems to be solid each week.”

Rowdy Moon, senior of Sargent, finished the weekend second in bareback riding with rides of 71 and 73 points.

Tanner McInerney, junior of Alzada, Montana, tie down roped in 10.7 seconds in his first go-round and followed in with 12.7 seconds in his second go-round, earning him third.

Within the 10 steer wrestling finalists, Chadron State held four of those spots.

Carson Good, senior of Long Valley, South Dakota, led the Eagles, finishing third at 4.9 and 5.1 seconds.

Parker Johnston, freshman of Maywood, wrestled his steer down in 5.5 and 5.1 seconds, placing him fifth. Following close behind, Colton Storer, sophomore of Arthur, took sixth with times of 6.0 and 4.7 seconds.

McInerney finished ninth, wrestling his steer in 5.3 and 14.5 seconds. He had received a 10-second penalty in his second go-round for breaking the barrier.

Drew Neuerburg, senior of Gill, Colorado, and Good, partnered up for the team roping, finishing fifth of 68 teams in the event at 8.4 and 14.4 seconds.

Segelke was sitting at second after her first go-rounds in her events. After this weekend, she has earned a total of 1,066 points for the season.

“The talent has always been there,” Luper said. “I believe that Quincy finally believes in herself and her confidence level is off the charts. When you have confidence Mount Everest looks like a mole hill.”

While Segelke has every reason to celebrate, this weekend’s celebration covered more than all-around cowgirl.

Segelke said that it was her birthday over the weekend competition.

“It is always fun to be around your family and friends on your birthday but getting to do what I love is always a cherry on top!” Segelke said.

CSC will continue its season, traveling to Laramie, Wyoming, this weekend, where the University of Wyoming will host regional rodeo.

Owens followed home after Mackenzi Kroll, freshman of Brighton, Colorado, doubled to right field.

Maples stole second, causing a throw down to second from the Yellow Jacket’s catcher. From third, Kroll stole home after the throw. Finishing out the third inning, Bailey Rominger, senior of Vail, Arizona singled to right field, bringing Maples around the rest of the bases.

In the fourth, Gabby Russell, junior of Oceanside, California, singled, bringing Quijas home. Kroll hit a pitch to left field, moving herself to second, advancing Henchenski to third, and sending Owens home.

Maples sacrificed a fly to center, moving runners on the bases, bringing Henchenski in for a run. Rominger doubled to left field, allowing Kroll to score, finishing out the Eagles scoring for the first game.

Russell started out on the mound and pitched five innings. She pitched 93 times, facing 30 batters and the batters earning 10 hits. Russell pitched four strikeouts and two walks.

Propp closed for the Eagles, pitching 27 pitches, earning three strikeouts against five batters.

“I thought that we performed very well yesterday,” Propp said. “Our defense and offense all came together

and it was a fun day being able to come out with two wins.”

In the second game, the Eagles earned eight runs, bringing the game to a close after five innings.

In the second inning, Maples brought Owens home after batting a single.

The rest of the scoring happened in the third inning, starting off with a single from Quijas who made it to second after the throw to home, and Marvel scored anyway.

Russell followed with a single to right field, bringing Quijas home. Russell scored next following a sacrifice fly from Henchenski.

A series of doubles finished out the game from Maples, Rominger and Marvel. Owens was brought home

by Maples. Rominger batted in both Maples and Kroll, and Rominger was the last Eagle to be brought home for the day.

Propp said she hopes the team takes the energy from their wins into these next weekends, and to build their confidence and motivation for future wins.

Following the games, the Eagles sit at ninth in the RMAC rankings with a record of 10-16 in the RMAC and a 10-20 overall record.

The Eagles will continue to their next series of games against Colorado School of Mines, Saturday.

Chadron State College’s golf team traveled to Litchfield Park, Arizona, for the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference championships, starting Sunday and finishing Tuesday.

“I think my team should be very proud of this season,” Kinsey Smith, freshman of Windsor, Colorado, said in a message to The Eagle. “We broke records, worked hard, and showed our true potential. Even though the last tournament wasn’t out best, I’m still glad we got to have this experience.”

The Eagles finished their spring season by taking ninth of 12 teams, finishing the three days with a score of 981. Their best day was their final day, and their team’s score card read 335-328-318-981.

Alpine Hickstein, sophomore of Chadron, took the lead for the Eagles and she finished the tournament tied 17thof 58, her scorecard reading 77-83-78-238.

Brooke Kramer, freshman of Aurora, Colorado, moved up from 32nd after the second day, finished tied 30th. Kramer score remained in the 80s, but she cut down two strokes each day, 84-82-80-246.

“I was proud of all of my teammates,” Smith said. “I know they all feel that they could have done better, but they worked very hard

and were able to put together some good rounds even when they had bad holes.”

Finishing tied 35th, Allison Acosta, freshman of Oro Valley, Arizona, moved up five places from day two with 79 strokes on the third day. She scored 88-82-79-249.

Kenzey Kanno, freshman of Mitchell, tied 39th. Her final scorecard reading 86-82-84-252.

Falling right behind Kanno, Smith finished the three days with a score of 90-82-81-253, sitting tied 41st at the end of the tournament.

“I was pretty disappointed with how I performed this tournament, especially the first day,” Smith said.

“That being said, I’m proud of how I bounced back the second two days.

Despite the struggle she felt she face, Smith said she thinks she had her best career par in the first day. She earned this par following a swing ending in the water and receiving a penalty stroke.

“I then went to the drop zone, where I would be hitting my third shot, and I ended up holing out from 62 yards away.” Smith said.

Finished their spring season and are due to return in the fall.

The five RMAC golfers for Chadron State will return for their competitions in the fall, and will continue to work over the summer. Smith said she will be focusing on her short game, feeling like she struggled with it the most this season.

Chadron State College Athletic Hall of Fame will induct four more former athletes, Saturday, during the annual dinner and induction ceremony.

The ceremony was originally scheduled in the fall but was postponed due to COVID-19 concerns. The Hall of Fame committee decided to induct 10 former CSC athletes, but six

chose to wait until later this year for the 2021 fall ceremony.

The four former Eagles to be induced will be Jordan Johnson, Aric Lopez, Michael Wahlstrom and Melissa Burke.

Johnson, of Oakland, was a former CSC wrestler in the 165-pound weight class who was a three-time national qualifier.

Two of the former athletes being inducted were participants with the football team. Inside linebacker Lopez, of Gillette, Wyoming, tied for second on the team with 70 tackles in his 2001 season.

Wahlstrom, of Chadron, received 64 catches for 801 yards and he assisted the Eagles in a back-to-back Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference championship in 2002.

Burke, of Chadron, was an Eagle on the women’s basketball team, placing herself ninth in the program for career points with 956 from 1997 to 2001.

The CSC Athletic Hall of Fame Dinner and Induction Ceremony will begin at 6 p.m. in the CSC Student Center Ballroom following the football joint practice with Wayne State College.
