After a heated campaign season, Student Senate ended the semester by swearing in senators for the fall 2021 term.

Isioma Akwanamnye, senior of Lagos, Nigeria, claimed victory over Sullivan Jones, sophomore of Papillion, in the highly anticipated Student Senate presidential election.

“First of all, I want to say thank you to everyone that voted,” Akwanamnye said. “I know it has been a rocky couple of weeks but I’m just glad we have it all over and sorted out.”

A total of 413 students casted a vote in the election according to Chief Justice Nathan Cronin, junior of Hay Springs.

Abigail Klammer, junior of Juanita, claimed reelection as vice president.

The presidency and vice presidency were not the only positions up for grabs. Several senatorial positions were filled for the upcoming semester.

Because these positions were uncontested, they were not put on the election ballot. Siddhant Shelke, junior of McKinney, Texas, Olivia Bryant, sophomore of Anselmo, Makenna Metzler, junior of Otis, Colorado, were sworn in as senators-at-large, and Laura Clay was sworn in as a Liberal Arts senator.

Shelke was also sworn in as the new vice president of finance.

CSC’s annual home rodeo will have a new attraction in 2021 following senate’s 9-4 vote to approve concert funds.

The concert will be sponsored by the Wildlife Club and the Farm Bureau, but the funds will come from fall semester students fees.

“Most rodeos, if you go to one anytime in the summer, typically have events similar to this,” Student Trustee Konery Klueber said. “Of all of our activities on campus, rodeo is one we could definitely get behind and help support. I don’t think it’s a bad thought to consider.”

After talking with students about the potential for a concert next fall, senators reported that some students expressed concerns over how much money Student Senate was allocating because of other projects. Others reported that students thought that the concert was a good idea after the pandemic.

Tickets for the concert will be available to CSC students first and anything left over would be sold to the public and other schools that would be participating in the rodeo. Tickets for community members would be around $25 and students from other schools would get a discounted price if they showed their student IDs, a member of the Wildlife Club said. They also said that 25% of the funds raised from ticket sales would go to the rodeo team and 75% would go back to Student Senate.

The money for the concert was not the only large allocation made that night.

Determined to join the Student Senate, Jones went for what he calls “the next best thing” to fill the second Liberal Arts senator position. Three senators voted in favor for Jones and three voted against him. With a tie-breaking vote from Klammer, Jones was sworn in.

“I wanted to still represent students of CSC,” Jones said. “I have just as much voice as a senator as I would president.”

Also petitioning, was Senator Kelsey Crock, senior of Cheyenne, Wyoming. Due to error, she did not run for reelection but still wanted to fill her position next year. Senators voted unanimously yes to reinstate her as senator of EHPCPSW. Even though the election was over, and candidates had been sworn in, an additional petition received on April 21 regarding the presidential election was presented to senators by Cronin. A decision regarding the petition was made Thursday, however, according to court rules, Cronin must read each petition to the Senate.

In the petition, Akwanamnye accused Jones of “slander, racism and aggressive advertising” during the election and recommended that he be removed from the ballot and disqualified from the race.

The petition stated that Jones’ accusations that Akwanamyne stole his posters was slanderous and “damaging to Isioma’s reputation,” that he was putting campaign posters in places not designated for advertisements, and that he was violating CSC Constitutional Court rule 8-1002 by claiming that “candidate Isioma does not belong on student government because of her citizenship status, which is not American” and “candidate Isioma does not know the American government settlement values.”

Because the election was the next day, the Student Senate Constitutional court dismissed the petition permanently Thursday, citing a lack of witness accounts, evidence backing Akwanamyne’s accusations and appropriate time to investigate the accusations.

Cronin said AFB wouldn’t hear the request until next fall because the trip is next semester.

“In my opinion, I don’t think it is necessarily fair to wait until fall,” Cronin said.

Because background checks need to be done on the students by the FBI and Secret Service before they can visit the Supreme Court, Cronin said that they needed Senate approval so he can begin making arrangements.

“It’ll benefit the court,” Cronin said. “If this year has been any inclination, we’ve had more court pieces in this year alone than almost the last four years combined. So, we’ve been setting a precedent that has never been set before.

This would be more of education of learning for myself and our court.”

Senators voted unanimously to approve the full amount.

“We also have to keep in mind that this is benefitting CSC students too,” Klueber said. “Recognizing that, yes it’s not the entire 22 hundred population, but these are still students that would gain something from that money.”

April 21, CSC homecoming king and queen winners were announced in the Chicoine Center at CSC. The event was open to the public and broadcast on CSC Live.

CSC President Randy Rhine spoke at the event which is usually held each fall.

“Well, this year has had a lot of firsts, this may be the first time that we’ve had homecoming in the spring, but I appreciate all of your efforts toward this and helping to make it happen, and being here in probably less than what we would consider ideal conditions,” Rhine said. “But I would also like to use this occasion to say thank you to all of you students, the faculty and the staff that have worked so hard to get us through this semester, to get us through this year.”

Each club on campus had the opportunity to nominate a candidate for homecoming king and queen. CSC students then had the opportunity to vote on those club nominations.

males and females were placed on homecoming royalty court.

Four CSC students who are members of the CSC Social Sciences Club competed in the Great Plains Regional Model Arab League Conference online competition during last Friday and Saturday.

Students at the conference participated in parliamentarian procedure to practice implementing diplomatic policies throughout the Arab League. They worked to create policy, draft press releases and produce resolutions among nations by debating topics about hypothetical situations.

Social Sciences Professor Justin Curtis, who is also an adviser to the social sciences club, helped students prepare and become involved with the event which was hosted online by Missouri Western State University.

“The conference is modeled after the proceedings of the Arab League, so each school

that attends represents a distinct country in the League of Arab States,” Curtis said. “We represented the Palestinian authority.”

Curtis said students experienced simulations where they had to pass resolutions, create executive agencies and serve as diplomats between countries.

“The environmental affairs committee experienced an oil spill off the coast of Yemen, and so all of the sudden their committee and the political affairs committee, which we didn’t have any students on that, but they just had to jump in and figure out what to do with that,” Curtis said.

Curtis said the Model Arab League is like Model United Nations. He says the smaller Model Arab League provides students with more opportunities to speak during the debates.

“It was impossible to just kind of sit back; everyone was participating at every moment of the conference,” Curtis said.

Dakota and his competition partner on the environmental affairs committee, Eric Pollack, sophomore of Alliance, won the Distinguished Delegation Award for being most accurate and active in the environmental session.

“The competition provided me and my team an opportunity to learn about the functions of governments through the use of current affairs and diplomacy,” Corbine said.

Pollack also said he learned more about diplomacy in the middle east.

“We represented the state of Palestine for MAL and had to do research about the country to represent them accurately in the conference,” Pollack said. “I also learned how complicated Arab League and other forms of international diplomacy is, as there are a lot of procedural rules you must go through.”

Curtis estimates students gave between 30 and 50 short impromptu diplomatic speeches during the competition, and said students began preparing for the competition in February by reading about current affairs in the Arab

world and trying to understand the relationships within the league.

“I was really impressed with our students’ willingness to just jump in and try something that csc has never participated in before, and I think they did a fantastic job,” Curtis said.

Laura Clay, junior of Colorado Springs, Colorado, is another student who participated in the competition. Clay also serves as president of the Social Sciences Club.

“I think I want to maybe work for the state department one day, maybe in an embassy later in life, and I think it was a great opportunity to figure out how international politics work, and just get a better perspective on a sovereign state that I really didn’t know much about,” Clay said.

Clay’s competition partner, Hend Elnady, sophomore of Cairo, Egypt, plans to do the event next year and encourages other students to join.

“I think it’s a very good experience and I would encourage other people to try it out,” Elnady said.

A decade of excellence u From The Eagle Staff For the 10th consecutive contest, The Eagle was judged Best Overall Newspaper in the Northern Plains Collegiate Media Association’s annual Golden Leaf Awards student media competition, presented Thursday via Zoom from the University of Nebraska at Kearney.

The Eagle’s website, csceagle. com, was judged third in Best Overall Website.

All students from NPCMA-member institutions were judged for work published Jan. 1-Dec. 31, 2020, a year upended by the COVID-19 pandemic. Journalism and advertising professionals outside of Nebraska, from Massachusetts to Wyoming, served as judges.

“It was extremely nerve wracking to be waiting for this year’s results,” said Brandon Davenport of Chadron, who served as editor from January to December 2020, when he graduated. “The Eagle has a long-standing tradition of winning Best Overall, and I am just glad we could maintain the same high standards of excellence set by those who came before us.”

Davenport also shared credit with the entire staff.

“I think the staff deserves extra recognition for having achieved this in such a challenging year,” he said.

“Despite the pandemic, they worked hard to make sure that the Eagle was as good as ever. It was nice for me personally to go out on such a high note. The (10th) win gives me confidence in the future staff going forward.”

Bob Unger, an award-winning editor of The Standard-Times of New Bedford, Massachusetts, and now a media consultant, judged the Best Overall Newspaper category.

“The Eagle is a smart, well-designed and well edited newspaper.

It’s photography is the best in its class, and the overall design makes it a pleasure to read,” Unger wrote in

his judges’ comments section. “The opinion pages are excellent, there are lots of student voices throughout. This is an excellent newspaper.”

Current Editor Aubrie Lawrence, sophomore of Alliance, who ascended to the position in January after Davenport graduated in December 2020, said she, too, was excited about The Eagle’s 10th consecutive Best Overall title.

“I’m really proud of what we were able to accomplish this past year,” Lawrence said. “I look forward to seeing everything we’ve got coming next year and continuing our streak.”

In addition to capturing first in the Best Overall Newspaper category, The Eagle staff won 11 firstplace, 11 second-place and nine third-place awards – spread among eight different student journalists – in the Print and Online Division’s 20 individual categories. The division recognizes individual excellence in news, sports, and feature reporting; opinion writing; photojournalism; advertisement design; and newspaper layout and design.

“Well, of course, I am proud of this crew, and all our previous crews, too,” The Eagle’s Adviser Michael D. Kennedy said. “Putting this in athletic terms, NPCMA’s Golden Leaf Awards competition is our conference championship. For any team to win 10 consecutive conference titles is, in my mind, an astonishing milestone. But to win that 10th title amid the height of a pandemic, well now, that’s just plain incredible.”

Kennedy said a significant factor contributing to The Eagle successfully maintaining high standards is a key philosophy the staff embraces.

“I have always told the staff members to focus on their readers,” he said. “If you do the best job you can possibly do for your readers, the rewards will take care of themselves. Years ago the staff members embraced that philosophy in the beginning, and each year the outgoing crew has handed it down to the incoming crews, and it has paid off for all of them.”

Cronin clarifies senate impeachment u By Aubrie Lawrence Editor

During the Student Senate meeting, Chief Justice Cronin took time to clarify the impeachment of former senator Brandy Friedrichsen which took place on April 19.

Cronin issued a court order via email to Friedrichsen regarding her unexcused absences on Feb. 22.

Friedrichsen responded to the email, saying she worked Monday nights and would be unable to attend the meeting because of the change in meeting time from

5:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

“If it is a problem, this semester, I am fine with not being a senator,” Friedrichsen told Cronin in the email. “I can’t afford to miss work, I’m sorry.”

Cronin indicated at Monday’s meeting that he told Friedrichsen that it wasn’t his place to advise her regarding her senatorial status. According to the chief justice Friedrichsen never responded.

“I assumed that, because she never put in an official resignation, she was still on the list( of senators),” Cronin said.

In March, Friedrichsen dropped out of classes at CSC.

Bloviation and cognitive dissonance do not newsgathering make

ear Editor, I bet you’d agree that as a news organization, The Eagle has a duty to vet, correct, or debunk the content it publishes. I hope you’ll also agree that running Drew Hester’s opinion in the April 22 edition of The Eagle without applying those journalistic rigors or at least a response or editor’s note was a mistake.

Not only is Mr. Hester’s opinion logically all over the place, it contains several factual inaccuracies. The Eagle is the voice of Chadron State, but that voice is not above reproach. That voice is allowed instruction, correction, qualification, or criticism.

Hence, some correction, qualification, and criticism: President Franklin D. Roosevelt called the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor “a date which will live in infamy.” On that day 2,403 Americans were killed and 1,178 others were wounded. To call the virus at the heart of our current pandemic the “infamous COVID-19 virus” when it’s killed 3 million people (an estimated 377,883 of them Americans) is not as edgy-clever as you think.

It may be concerning to some that the college might require vaccination to return next year, but it is well within CSC’s rights to require vaccinations before enrolling in classes on campus. In fact, take a look at CSC’s current policy on immunizations, last updated in 2016: Students are required to submit proof of immunization for measles,

mumps and rubella immunity before enrollment at CSC. Hester claims to believe we have a duty to protect our fellow people. CSC is doing its duty by requiring masks and vaccination(s) to prevent the spread of deadly disease on campus. Hester also hopefully exhorts his readers to do ample research on any vaccine before receiving it, but it seems his own research is woefully insufficient.

Most of our COVID vaccines are mRNA vaccines. Even a cursory look into what those letters mean from a vaccination perspective will show that injecting them into your body is NOT a “rather permanent ordeal.” The mRNA helps your body’s own all-natural, organic, gluten-free, god-given immune system to recognize SARSCoV-2’s spike protein and better deal with it in the future. Then it literally disintegrates.

Johnson & Johnson’s vaccine was not recalled; its administration was paused while authorities gather further evidence. The potentially associated blood clots were not “caught” after 4 million doses were administered. According to the CDC as of April 12, more than 6.8 million doses of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine had been administered in the U.S. The pause was initiated following reports that, within two weeks of getting it, six women developed blot clots, and one of them died.

Shall we do the math? If we take for granted that the shots caused the clots, that’s 0.0001% of people who got the J&J shot in the U.S. That’s a

provisional, unscientific no-clot success rate of 99.9999%. This is what’s referred to as the benefit outweighing the risks. The risk of developing clots is far, far greater from smoking, obesity, taking birth control, and catching the novel coronavirus.

Finally, Hester gripes about infectious disease expert Dr. Anthony Fauci having opinions about the pandemic and the myth of the ever-changing, flip-flopping, goo-goo, gonzo public health guidelines.

The guidelines have changed and evolved based on various inputs and conditions that have changed and evolved. “Don’t mask because healthcare providers need to make use of our limited supply of masks” became “We’ve got plenty of masks and lots of infections, everybody better mask up.” Still, folks CHOSE to not follow the guidelines and further spread the disease.

Vaccines promote immunity, but we are still asked to mask up because there are large swaths of our population who CHOSE not to or cannot yet get vaccinated.

Mr. Hester advocates for freedom to choose what he does and by inference what is done TO HIM. But in choosing the FREEDUMB of unvaccinated masklessness over compliance with simple, effective, and safe measures to limit the spread of a deadly virus, he and others like him are making choices that affect everyone around them.

On April 26, an article was published by Northwestern College’s student newspaper, The Beacon, arguing that Christians should not be tolerant of homosexuals.

The article titled i‘Tolerance can be hateful’ written by Craig Sterk, argues that allowing people to live happily as members of the LGBTQ+ community is the same as allowing someone to walk down “a dark path headed for a deadly cliff.”

I believe that Sterk had good intentions when he chose to write his article, but good intentions don’t make a good deed. Sterk talks about 1 Corinthians 13, which speaks on what love should look like and cites ‘ “[Love] does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth” (vs. 6)’.

He uses this passage to back up his opinion that “the most unloving thing we can do is express approval and affirmation of someone living in unrighteousness”.

Personally, I’d like him to show me where he is finding the abundance of actively practicing Christians that “express approval” for the LGBTQ+ community.

A very small majority of 54% of Christians in the US say that it should be okay to be homosexual, while the percent of people in other religions are 76% and the percent in non-religiously affiliated people is 83%, according to a study done by the Pew Research Center.

These percents aren’t even necessarily people that give complete support for homosexuality either, it’s just people that think that it shouldn’t be discouraged.

While I do appreciate that Sterk warns to not be extreme in condemnation, and stoop to “yelling, threatening, cruelly censuring

The issue is that he says that Christians should condemn LGBTQ+ members at all. In Matthew 7:1-2 it is written “Judge not, that you be not judged. For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you.” Christians are not meant to judge, that is a right reserved for God. It seems to be suggested by

Sterk that we should condemn our homosexual peers because the Bible says to, but I wonder what else he would like to cherry pick from the Bible.

According to the very same chapter that Sterk quotes “Love is patient, love is kind” from it is also written that “If I give all I posses to the poor and surrender by body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing.” 1 Corinthians 13:3.

In his misguided attempt to keep others from sin, Sterk has sinned himself and suggests that we should keep love, the thing which makes everyone more godly, from those who are not heterosexual.

While it is a part of the Christian faith to spread the faith, before we begin to condemn and judge others we should remember Matthew 7:3-5 “Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? Or how can you say

to your brother, ‘let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is the log in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye.”

And if that is too long to remember there is also 1 John 3:15 “Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.”

All sins are equal and I suggest that we take a look at our own and stop pretending that homosexuality is the worst thing a person can do. Especially when according to multiple researchers the word that was translated from the original text that now says homosexual, actually meant ‘boy molester’, and was changed to mean homosexuals in the 1980s.

It’s time to start thinking and doing our own research before adopting hate into our hearts.

I’ve always been stumped whenever I’m asked the question, “what is your biggest pet peeve?”

I believe I have finally discovered my answer: People with poor work ethic.

Specifically, people who complain about their work, but aren’t doing anything to relieve themselves by getting said work done.

Believe me when I say that COVID-19 has impacted me. I feel like I’ve never been more tired and strained in my life.

I feel like I’m always on edge and annoyed with nearly everyone around me because I’ve been at

the end of my rope for weeks.

And yes. I am busy. It’s not like I’m complaining about people not getting their work done, but I have all this time for me to get the work done.

I am enrolled in 15 credit hours of higher-level classes. I am the sports editor for The Eagle. I write numerous stories each week and take photos of any and all events when I can. I am also a writing tutor, which I enjoy being at any time I am free outside of the newsroom.

Despite the myriad of excuses I could be using, I don’t. I am mentally, emotionally, physically, and psychologically exhausted, but I’m still getting my work done.

been negatively impacted in the last year? Yes. Do I think everyone is mentally drained due to the happenings of this past year? Yes. Do I think everyone deserves a break after what this year has done to people? Definitely.

But that doesn’t mean stop doing your work because of it.

I think that people who are taking advantage of the pandemic by using it as an excuse to not do work are in for a rude awakening when they enter the real world.

Cause once this pandemic is over, the excuse will end with it.

They can use it now, but an employer years down the road will not appreciate it. Even if your professor allows it, you’re harming yourself more than you might think. By not holding yourself accountable, you are finding ways to push deadlines back as much as you can. In the real world, deadlines are usually stagnant.

Plus, the extensions are ridiculous. Students that are using the

extra leniency from their professors this semester should realize that they are adding more stress to the professor. If the professor is allowing their students to turn their entire semester’s work in at the end, they just gave themselves all of those papers to grade before those grades are due.

Just because they let you, doesn’t mean you should.

Everyone is frazzled by the pandemic; you aren’t the only one. Suck it up and complete your work. A failing grade won’t be anybody else’s fault except for your own.

Listen to this advice: once you’ve hit rock bottom, the only way to go is up, as long as you put the shovel down.

What’s next for David Craven?

Artist-in-residence David Craven reflects on his time at CSC and directing during COVID-19  By Erin Hayhurst Reporter

As part of his second semester as Artist-in-Residence for the CSC theatre department, David Craven has made the best out of a COVID-19 influenced semester.

Craven previously directed during the Fall semester of 2019, directing the productions of ‘Evil Dead: The Musical’ and ‘Miss Julie.’

Following the end of this semester, Craven will be going back to his home in Atlanta to get ready for caroling season.

Craven hopes for a somewhat more normal season this year after only doing about 43% of their usual season last year due to COVID-19 restrictions.

All-student juried art show closes Friday  From CSC College Relations Four students have the winning entries in the Chadron State College All Student Juried Art Show, which closes Friday. Judges of the show were Holly Counts and Courtney Kouba, staff members of the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center.

Carissa Hill of Imperial, received first and third places, Devin Hodges of Hulett, Wyoming, took second place, and Baylie Her Many Horses of Oelrichs,South Dakota, and Mia MacDonald of Cheyenne, Wyoming, earned honorable mentions.

The first-place entry by Hill, an art education major, is an oil painting of a horse’s nose with human hand extended toward it.

“It represents how horses and people can have a really good, friendly relationship with each other. I really like the beauty and strength of horses. I have had a love for horses ever since I was little and I have one horse currently and I have a really good friendship with him,” she said.

Hill’s third-place piece is a colored pencil drawing of the Venus sculpture.

Hodges’ second-place entry is a glazed, clay sculpture, titled Tea Stained.

“I used glaze with like lead in it to make it look like stained glass. It’s kind of a pun because it is a tea pot and it looks like stained glass,” Hodges said.

Hodges, who is junior art education major, said most of her work is two-dimensional.

MacDonald, a graphic design major, received an

honorable mention for her string art installation, Collide.

“I was inspired by the string art of the 1970s and 80s and parabolas in math,” MacDonald said. “I had some technical difficulties. When I first submitted it, it actually popped off the wall completely. I had to reinstall it. The judges saw the second version and I like this version better.”

She enjoys branding and hopes for a career in graphic design where she helps companies portray a cohesive image through colors and fonts.

Her Many Horses, an art education major, received honorable mention for her piece, Warped Inner Self.

“The inspiration for the piece is me. This one specifically is being critical of my mental state for the past couple semesters because of my anxieties and depression. In this piece, I kind of just let it all go,” Her Many Horses said.

She said the piece began as an oil painting, but soon became mixed media.

“I got frustrated waiting for the oil to dry. It took several weeks, so I decided to go with whatever I felt like, acrylic, pen, and more oil paint. I really stacked everything on top of each other,” Her Many Horses said.

In 1921 Chadron State Park became the first park in the Nebraska State Park System on April 25, 1921. The legislature bill was introduced by Representative George Snow and Senator James Good. Good was considered to be the leader in creating the park. There are now eight state parks, nine historical parks and 60 state recreation areas.

In the 1930s Chadron State Park put in a swimming pool, before this time the pond at the park was used by visitors for swimming. In 1966 the park added a heater to the pool and in 1992 the pool and bathhouse was renovated.

In 2012 the West Ash fire burned 90% of the parks understory leaving the forest intact. 1973’s Dead Horse fire and 2006’s Spotted Tail fire both missed through the park. The parks fast recovery from the West Ash fire was attributed to the forest management in past years.

2001 the park began a selective timber thinking process. e plan called the ‘Forest Fire Protection Plan for Chadn State Park. The goal was to decrease fuels that might be ailable to fires. This project marked the first ever commerl timber sale on a Nebraska State Park.

April 25 marked the 100 anniversary of Chadron State Park and with it the State Parks System. In celebration several state parks and recreation areas will be hosting events. June 11 and 12 the park will be hosting a wine tasting, food truck rally, Run for the Hills 5k and other family activities.

Whoooo is ready to celebrate bird month?

This May, The Wild Bird Habitat Store and Nebraska Game and Parks Commission are sponsoring Nebraska International Migratory Bird Month.

International Migratory Bird Day is officially on the second Saturday of May but, in order to host more events and create more awareness, Nebraska celebrates the whole month of May as bird month, according to Nebraskabirdmonth.org.

All month, Nebraska Game and Parks Commission will be hosting a bird month bioblitz. Using a smart phone, people can report a bird sighting by uploading a photo or a video a bird seen in Nebraska. Scientists will then work to identify the bird in the photo, this will help create estimates

of bird populations.

The Schramm Educational Center, birding center is inviting new birders to come visit the center and rent a birding backpack with all the tools a birder needs.

Several birding hikes and walks will be happening across the state.

The first of several birding hikes in the state, will take place May 1, one at the Heron Haven in Omaha. The other at the Rowe Sanctuary in Gibbon is happening on both May 1 and 2. May 8 Lauritzen Gardens in Omaha is hosting a warbler walk to look for 23 warblers in the area. The Mother’s Day Bird Walk is on May 9 at Pioneers Park Nature Center in Lincoln. Fort Robinson State Park in Crawford is hosting a bird walk on May 15 and the Wildcat Hills Nature Center near Gering is hosting a bird hike on May 22.

Fontenelle Forest is hosting Zoom meetings May 3-7 at 12:00-12:15 p.m. on different raptor species. On May 22 they are hosting another raptor event from 10-11 a.m. with Nebraska Game and Parks Commission. At 1010:45 a.m. on May 8 on zoom, discussions will be centered around how to feed wild birds safely. Nebraska Game and Parks is hosting a Flying WILD workshop on May 11 from 6-8 p.m.

On May 20, Coffee and Cardinals will be discussing how to choose coffee that supports birds.

In person celebrations are happening on May 8 at Ponca State Park, May 15 at the Prairie Loft in Hastings and Riverside Discovery Center in Scottsbluff and May 22 at Spring Creek Prairie Audubon Center near Denton.

30x30 plan draws some concern from agriculturalists u By Kamryn Kozisek Ag and Range Editor

By 2030 the Biden administration wants to protect 30% of U.S. land and oceans by creating the 30x30 plan.

Some farmers and ranchers became concerned that the 30x30 plan meant that the government would be forcefully taking away their land. USDA Agriculture Secretary, Tom Vilsack claims that this is not the case.

“There’s no intention to take something away from folks,” Vilsack said, on a call with reporters. “It’s really designed to figure out creative and innovative ways to encourage folks to participate in what I think many farmers and ranchers are already doing, and may very well be inclined to do more, if the right set of incentives are in place.”

Vilsack assured agriculturalists that the plan is not aimed at grabbing land from farmers or ranchers.

Instead, he said that it intends to encourage farmers and ranchers to use USDA programs voluntarily. These programs help to conserve land and reward agriculturalists.

Conservation efforts for farm and ranch lands are already offered through programs like the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP), the Emergency Conservation Program, Farmable Wetlands Program, Emergency Forest Restoration Program, Grasslands Reserve Program and the Source Water Protection Program.

These programs reward agriculturalists for helping to conserve land and water resources. The USDA Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS)

and Farm Service Agency (FSA) offer these programs, which are done voluntarily by agriculturalists.

According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) there is about 640 million acres that the Federal Government holds. The lands include national forests, grasslands, parks and wildlife refuges.

Nebraska is currently 97% privately owned with 549,346 acres belonging to the federal government according to Nebraska Game and Parks Commission.

There are currently more than 5 mil- Tom Vilsack, lion acres of land and wetlands protected USDA agriculture secretary by the USDA through these programs.

In Nebraska there are 27,205 land contracts with FSA CRP programs, totaling to about 1,271,718 acres.

“(We want them to) embrace new opportunities and new ways, none of it involves taking anyone’s land or using eminent domain.”

Semester closes but sports continue on u By Mackenzie Dahlberg Sports Editor

Even though The Eagle won’t have another edition until the fall, some athletic programs will still be finishing out their seasons.

Rodeo will be traveling to Greeley, Colorado for the rodeo at Colorado State University this weekend, starting Friday, and this rodeo will finish out their spring season.

Outdoor track will continue to run, jump and throw for success at the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships track meet, May 1, in Pueblo, Colorado.

They will then have qualifying athletes travel, May 21, to Allendale, Michigan, for the NCAA Division II National Championships track meet.

Currently there aren’t any track meets scheduled in between the two championships meets, but

there is always the possibility.

Softball will continue their games at home. They will host Colorado Mesa this weekend, and Regis University, May 7 and 8. Games against Colorado School of Mines, originally scheduled for Sunday and Monday, were postponed but a make-up date has yet to be set.

CSC softball team will also be waiting to hear if they qualify for the RMAC championships scheduled for May 1315. As the date gets closer, the teams and location will be determined.

Athletics will return in the fall along with The Eagle and students.

The fall semester begins Aug. 23 and the first athletic event is currently football tentatively starting Sept. 4, against Western Colorado in Gunnison, Colorado.

Their first home game is set for Sept. 18 against South Dakota School of Mines.

Eagles complete BHSU series u By Mackenzie Dahlberg Sports Editor

The Eagles took their yesterday’s game that were rescheduled against Black Hills State University at the CSC softball field.

They took the first game in seven innings, 3-0, followed by a 10-inning stand-off for their second game, coming away with another win, 5-4.

The Eagles have an overall record of 12-20; their Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference record being 12-16 and placing them ninth in the RMAC. Jessie Henchenski, freshman of Fort Collins, Colorado, started the scoring in the second inning, following the stealing of second base by Bailey Rominger, senior of Vail, Arizona, who finished on third after an error by the catcher.

Still in the second inning, Bailey Marvel, sophomore of Lakewood, Colorado, hit to left field for a single bring Rominger home.

In the sixth inning, Mackenzi Kroll, freshman of Brighton, Colorado, hit herself to second base, knocking Angelica Maples, senior of Marysville, California, in for a run.

Gabby Russell, junior of Oceanside, California,

pitched the first game. With 61 pitches, she only had three hits against 23 batters faced.

For the second game, Rominger singled to left field in the second inning, advancing runners, and sending Ellie Owens, senior of Longmont, Colorado, home.

The fourth inning walked Eagles around the bases, bringing Maples home. Marvel then followed with a single, allowing Henchenski to score.

The Eagles weren’t able to make it around the bases again until the ninth inning following a hit by Slone Quijas, freshman of Erie, Colorado, Marvel scoring after an error by the second baseman. In the tenth inning, The Eagles finished the game with a hit from Marvel, bringing Henchenski in following a catcher’s error.

Peyton Propp, freshman of Lakewood, Colorado, pitched the first five inning of the game, pitched 118 times, facing 24 batters. She struck out nine times, finishing her five innings with three hits and three runs.

Russell closed for the other five innings, only pitching two hits and one run. Pitching 49 times, she struck out four of the 19 batters faced.

Chadron State will host a series of doubleheaders against Colorado Mesa. The first pitch is set for noon, Friday, at the CSC softball field.

Chadron State cowboys roped in a season high with first-place partners in the team roping over the weekend at the University of Wyoming rodeo in Laramie.

“I enjoyed seeing the boys capitalize on the steers and the set up,” Quincy Segelke, senior of Douglas, Wyoming, said in a message to The Eagle. “They work hard and deserve a win.”

The leading performance for the weekend was from Colton Storer, sophomore of Arthur, and Tanner Whetham, freshman of Henry. The two were partnered up for team roping, Storer as the header and Whetham as the heeler.

Their first go-round placed them second with a time of 6.5 seconds, and with their second run at 6.0 seconds, they finished the weekend first.

Storer and Whetham went up against 130 contestants in the team roping, awarding them $810 each.

They contributed to the 530 points that the men’s team earned, which was their highest score of the season, finishing the weekend second behind the University of Wyoming.

Rowdy Moon, senior of Sargent, also contributed,

finishing second in bareback riding with scores of 73 and 69 points.

Tate Petrak, senior of Martin, South Dakota, wrestled his steer in 6.3 and 6.7 seconds, placing him third.

Tiegan Marchant, junior of Newcastle, Wyoming, finished his first go-round of steer wrestling in 10.5 seconds, barely qualifying for Sunday finals. He then cut his second run in half, timed at 5.2 seconds, but he was unable to place himself in the top six with the quick run.

Segelke was tied for fifth and sixth following the first go-round of breakaway roping with 2.8 seconds. She was unable to place due to missing her calf in her final round.

“I learned that even when things feel like they’re going great, a curveball can always be thrown,” Segelke said. “Back to the grinding stone this week.”

Cowgirl Brianna Williams, senior of Buffalo, South Dakota, finished third in goat tying with times of 6.8 and 7.1 seconds.

Shailey McAbee also had a strong performance, finishing fourth after her first go-round in the barrel racing with a run of 15.92 seconds. McAbee was unable to place though following her second go-round.

The Eagles will travel to Greeley, Colorado, this weekend for their last rodeo this season at Colorado State University.

The Eagle added another meet into their schedule with a Saturday meet hosted by Colorado School of Mines in Golden, Colorado.

“Our results at Colorado Mines were exceptional,” Head Track and Field Coach Riley Northrup said in a message to The Eagle. “We went with the purpose of improving marks before conference, and basically every performance was a season best.”

Together, Morgan Fawver, sophomore of McCook; Emory Yoosook, freshman of Casper, Wyoming; Osvaldo Cano, sophomore of Oshkosh; and Brodie Roden, junior of Riverton, Wyoming, won the 4x100-meter relay with 40.8 seconds.

Fawver finished the 100-meter dash with 10.62 seconds, earning him second.

Roden also finished second place in the 200 meters with a time of 21.27 seconds, setting a new career best.

Cano finished the 100 meters fifth, but he finished with a career best at 11.17 seconds. Logan Moravec, sophomore of Gering, also marked a career best in the 800 meters with a time of 1:54.64, placing him sixth.

“Anytime the results are improving leading up to the championships meet, we know the athletes are trending in the right direction,”

Northrup said. “That should result in their best performances happening at the right time.”

Beating his career best by about 82 seconds, Garrett Avery, sophomore of Sheridan, Wyoming, finished the 5000 meters seventh with a time of 16:19.11 Yoosook jumped 22 feet, 1 inch in the long jump, finished sixth and also setting a career best.

Creighton Trembly, freshman of Longmont, Colorado, finished fourth in the 110 hurdles with a run of 15.47 seconds. Harley Rhoades, junior of Douglas, Wyoming, finished the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 56.95 seconds, placing fifth.

Madison Watson, senior of Mitchell, finished fifth in the 5000 meters, timed at 19:23.76.

Twenty-four men and 13 women qualified for the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships meet, Saturday, that will travel to Pueblo, Colorado.

Northrup said that for the national meet, athletes that qualified are Roden in the 400 meters; Derrick Nwagwu, sophomore of Aurora, Colorado, in the triple jump; Shane Collins, sophomore of Bison, South Dakota, in the hammer throw and discus; and the 4x100 relay “There are several others that are right on the cusp,” he said. “So hopefully this weekend’s amazing looking forecast, heightened competition, and previous week’s training will culminate in some more NCAA qualifying performances.”

“Our goal for the spring was to get bettter and make ourselves a smarter football team,” Head Coach Jay Long said. “We ended up finishing with about 40 practices, and our guys used them to the best of their advantage and keep getting better.”

As offensive linemen practiced breaking through a defensive lineman working to protect the ‘quarterback,’ teammates filled the space around the drill, cheering on their respective lineman upon the success of one or the other.

Eventually, the drills shifted to involve multiple positions leading into the two teams starting the scrimmagae portion of their practice at noon.

Within the game, the defenses ran the game for both teams, the first points on the board being a safety by WSC. Holst handed the ball off to Running Back Christopher Busby, sophomore of Scottsbluff, tackled in the end zone by WSC linemen.

Keeping with their strong defense, Wayne had the only turnover about halfway through the first quarter, Kevin Ransom, junior of Port Allen, Louisiana, being the player to intercept Eagle Tyler Hyland’s, junior of Fort Collins, Colorado, 40-yard throw.

Wayne took a five-point lead before they made it into the end zone with a 48-yard run by Wildcat Jacob Keiser, freshman of Hartington, with 5:49 left for first half of play.

Drake Holden, freshman of Greeley, Colorado, was able to get CSC on the board with a 21-yard field goal in the second half of the game. Holden’s field goal followed Ali Musa, sophomore of San Diego, receiving a 35yard pass from Hyland, and a pass interference penalty on Wayne, moving the ball to the nine-yard line.

CSC sacked Wayne’s quarterbacks three times, while the Eagle offensive line kept their quarterback safe, no matter who had filled the role.

Holst and Elijah Myles, junior of Hawthorne, California, didn’t play for long before calling it a day. Holst is planning on returning to the field in the fall with his extra year of eligibility.

“Spring is used to get guys reps and work on things to improve on for the fall,” Holst said. “Nobody wants to make a mistake, but the spring is the time to try to work on technique and ability without having the consequences of making mistakes.”

With an extra year of eligibility for players on top of about 50 players coming in, CSC’s football team will be filled and ready for as regular as a season they are able to get.

Long said that he is planning on most of the seniors returning for next year.

“I’m looking forward to having a normal season where we play our conference schedule and our guys go out and compete,” Long said.
