COVID vaccines may soon be available to staff u By Sullivan Jones News Editor

On Tuesday, the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services updated its COVID-19 vaccination plan.

According to the updated information, which can be found online at dhhs.ne.gov, first responders, utilities workers and educators are in tier one of phase 1B vaccination prioritization.

Though the priority of phase 1B remains to vaccinate people aged 65 and older.

According to the NDHHS, the plan is to begin vaccinations for educational staff in February or March. CSC Vice President of Enrollment Management, Marketing and Student Services Jon Hansen is planning for the vaccination rollout in March.

“If shipments of vaccination arrive as anticipated, all CSC employees will have the opportunity to receive their first dose by the end of March,” Hansen said.

Hansen oversees the CSC COVID-19 Imple-

mentation Team, he discussed how the college will help with the vaccination rollout.

“Our roll is sharing information and providing a location for the vaccination,” He said.

Much of that information can be found on CSC’s COVID-19 page on the school website. Hansen says updates and other information will soon be sent directly to CSC employees as the school obtains more information about distribution plans.

Students remain in Phase 2B of the NDHHS vaccination plan which is scheduled for distribution in May.

The Math Science Center of Innovative Learning, formerly known as the Math and Science building, has been totally gutted since demolition crews removed the old interior to make room for a full renovation now underway.

Before that, school crews of student workers, faculty and staff worked through last summer to remove furniture, scientific collections and equipment, historical and archaeological museum artifacts and other remnants of the educational facility.

The stuff removed was either put in storage or sorted for trash, depending on if it had a use. Other things removed are being used in temporary classrooms found in Brooks Hall and newly constructed labs in Burkhiser Technology Complex.

Clearing out the Math and Science building was necessary to make way for demolition of the building’s interior. That demolition is now finished, and crews have begun new interior framework to replace the old cement-block walls.

In their place are metal framed walls with chases large enough to fit any utility lines or other needed mechanics, which crews and subcontractors from the project’s general contractor, Adolfson and Peterson Construction, are running through various places of the building.

“We’re working from the top of the building to the bottom,” Eric Carlson, Assistant Project Manager from Adolfson and Peterson, said.

The building’s upper level is a jungle of metal frames, electrical lines, pipes and HVAC conduit. The middle level had many walls framed with crews working to add more.

The bottom floor remained much emptier than the rest of the building as crews were still excavating areas near the old Gross Anatomy Lab to replace plumbing fixtures soon to be

poured in by concrete.

On the building’s north side, a new wing will extend to the edge of the slope south of Andrew’s Hall. Currently, crews are working to pour its concrete foundation and walls to support the large extension, which will predominately house chemistry labs, classrooms and storage space.

The organizational floor plan of the renovated building will not completely rearrange the existing floor plan, as some prominent features won’t move from their previous vicinity.

For example, the Museum of Geology will remain in the basement’s northwestern quadrant where crusted paint from the old museum is still visible on the soon to be insulated walls.

The Gross Anatomy Lab will be moved just across the hall from its old location, and many of the building’s office spaces will remain on the northwest corner of the middle and upper floors.

Noticeable movements will include the CSC Planetarium to underneath the old rotunda in the center of the building.

“It should extend up to just a couple of feet below those stairs,” Eric Carlson said pointing to the old spiral staircase.

A large hole remains in the space where the planetarium’s high peaked ceiling used to be.

“This is the biggest electrical room you will ever see,” Carlson said. “Normally they cram it into the smallest room.”

The old central spiral stairway will be thrown out and replaced with different stairs and a platform at each floor level, including a study lobby on the upper floor. The pendulum will not hang through the spiral or anywhere else in the renovated building.

High Plains Herbarium will be moved downstairs to the building’s south-central corner with a herbarium library and plant study rooms directly west.

According to Carlson, the project is on schedule and hasn’t been majorly impacted by COVID-19.

The project is scheduled to be substantially completed by February next year and open to occupancy by March of next year.

Former Senator Chinaza Nwosa, who avoided impeachment by CSC’s Student Senate last week, resigned her seat effective Thursday, just three days after her hearing, Chief Justice Nathan Cronin said.

At Monday’s senate meeting in the Student Center, Scottsbluff Room, Cronin read an email Nwosa sent last Thursday, then explained the resignation to senate.

“Effective last week, on Thursday the 18th, Sen. Chinaza has officially resigned from the Student Senate,” Cronin said.

Nwosa did not responded to a request for comment as of press time Wednesday.

After her hearing Nwosa took exception to The Eagle’s coverage of it. She declined to comment and said she did not want her “business out for the student body to read.” In a Thursday email to The Eagle, Nwosa accused the newspaper of libel, invasion of privacy, and demanded The Eagle retract its story.

The newspaper replied to Nwosa Friday say-

ing it recognized she thought she had been aggrieved and said “relying on established U.S. legal precedents,” it would decline her request.

At its Monday meeting, senate discussed the fact that its meetings and business are public information publishable by the press.

“I know a couple of senators read last week’s paper and they had something to say about their votes being pulled or named and reported that way,” Senate President Lily Umeta said.

The article listed how each individual senator voted in last week’s impeachment trial.

“Before I start discussion, I would like to tell you guys that everything that we do in senate, every single report, everything to do with finances, everything we discuss is an open discussion,” Umeta said. “So anyone can come into the senate and report about it, including your votes.”

Umeta also mentioned people’s right to question the legitimacy of reports about themselves.

“If you think that your words are taken in the wrong way, you can contact whoever and explain yourself,” Umeta said.

Cronin also entered the discussion about open speech.

“Anything you do as a student senator is public knowledge,” Cronin said. “So, if I send an email to Konery saying something to do with; anything we do as an executive board for senate is completely open.”

Senate Secretary Natalie Boyd mentioned the importance of open discussion during meetings.

“The discussion portion of votes is extremely important,” Boyd said. “If you feel like you’re being misrepresented or something could be misrepresented, it’s extremely important to talk in the discussion period and ask questions and explain how you see things.”

“It’s a little bit of media training, a little bit of professionalism and leadership training,” Umeta concluded with.

Failure to Learn or Failure to Teach?

ou didn’t get an A in the class? It’s OK a lot of people fail it anyways, at least you passed.

Conversations like these aren’t uncommon on many college campuses. Although there are plenty of difficulty classes, I think many people would agree some classes are made unneccessarily difficult. Professors go over their syllabus at the start of the classes and state their expectations and what the class will be like. Unfortunately the expectations sometimes include expecting a large amount of students to fail.

The issue for me is when students that are trying their best and studying hard still fail.

If a student uses their resources and studies they should be able to at least pass that class. Professors should want their students to do well. I don’t think that A grades should be handed out to just anyone, but students should be able to pass a class as long as they put in the work.

There are the cases in which students just don’t study or put in the work but those who are should have no reason to fail. Unfortunately that isn’t always the case. A student

As They See It

Wearing a mask should be a choice u By Caleb Smith Contributor

Before I start, I would like to plainly state that this is my opinion, and in no way represents scientific evidence for or against the wearing of masks in relation to the reduced spread of COVID-19 or any other illness. These words are simply my thoughts and observations from my life on CSC’s campus and around town.

With that said, at CSC I am involved heavily with several clubs, an on-campus job and one varsity sport. Though I am far from connected to the whole campus.

However, I do come in con-

tact with a wide variety of people. Many of these people share the same opinion on the continued use of masks – that we should stop wearing them.

Furthermore, based on my observations and conversations with co-workers and fellow students, at this point very few true believers in the continued wearing of masks remain. In fact, many people oppose them behind closed doors.

Unfortunately, these people fear costly repercussions if they openly rejected the use of masks.

Need proof? Just look around at how people act at church, in a restaurant or at a wedding. How many people there are not wearing masks?

How many of these people would tell me to put one on if we were on campus?

Likely you may have seen people not wearing masks in public who would tell you to wear one on campus. The reality is these campus enforcers do

not actually believe in wearing masks.

But they do fear losing their jobs, being denied access to resources and generally being treated as an outcast for not wearing a mask. Thus, they put aside personal beliefs, sacrifice individuality for conformity and pull the cloth across their face to ensure false safety against a virus they do not fear.

I want to be clear that I do not place the blame for this situation on anyone who may be required to enforce policies that they disagree with to maintain employment or status.

I do however place the blame on the system itself, the machine, that pushes down in-

dividuals until we forget what we truly believe in for fear of becoming some kind of criminal.

I do not care if anyone chooses to wear a mask, but I think that is a choice that should be left up to the individual and not decided by the school or any other government establishment.

I, for one, am tired of society forcing ideas I disagree with upon me, and I think the time has come to ask our government and society some questions. Like, how far are you going push the individual, how long is long will you constrain our liberties, and is it time for us to stand up?

In the United States, we tout a uniquely individualistic mindset: schoolchildren are encouraged to think creatively and compete to stand out against their peers, companies offer exclusive bonuses to employees for outstanding performance, civil activists are praised for “breaking the social norm,” and so on. Because of these principles, this mindset strongly contradicts its neighbors to the east.

At its most extreme, the eastern ideal is communism, or society governed by the masses.

However, communism represents only the end of a broad spectrum of collectivism. Just as Asia is the largest and most diverse continent, collectivism is widely practiced and varies from culture to culture. Japan, for example, teaches the phrase “the nail that sticks out is always hammered down” to its children to prevent misbehavior. It is not a reprimand, rather a warning not to stray from safety. As an individual, the risk of failure is high; as a member of the mass, the only failure is going against the grain From this viewpoint, it is easy to criticize the east as a dysfunctional, unproductive herd. Yet, it is important to re-

alize that we westerners are not exempt from collectivism. There are countless ideas and standards we uphold simply because we have learned them. Political factions, class systems, and distrust of collectivism itself are all agreed upon and enforced because we universally believe

they are correct. In this way, it becomes apparent that there is no “right” or “wrong” way to think, there is only perspective. Likewise, easterners also practice individualism. Those who are confident enough to assert their ideas and escape the nail hammer sometimes become the leaders of society. In this way, the east is more prone to authoritarian regimes such as communism. As a collectivist leader, it is easy to use the values of the people against them to ensure personal gain, thus causing the problems we see in modern eastern government.

That is not to say the west is exempt from bad practice. It is no secret that the United States

is becoming overwhelmingly corrupt by billionaires exploiting the workforce and monopolizing the economy. Because we so praise competitive business, we have given our CEO’s nearly as much power as the government itself.

The east and west represent societies with drastically different truths. Both sides are harshly critical of each other, but they are both productive in their own right. Furthermore, they are only functional because they incorporate their opponent’s ideals, even without realizing it. Given the evidence, it is increasingly apparent that there is no such thing as truth, only perspective.

With love in the air, there is something that unfortunately always follows; heartbreak. Of course, the remedy for a dateless day varies for different people. For some, the perfect way to spend a weekend alone is with a bucket of popcorn and a hack-and-slash horror flick. Personally, I usually go for the more obvious routethe classic romantic comedy.

This year, my movie of choice is “The Broken Hearts Gallery”, directed by Natalie Krinsky. The film centers around Lucy, an art gallery assistant played by Geraldine Viswanathan. Lucy is an emotional hoarder, meaning she keeps little bits and pieces of past

events and, more importantly, relationships. One man’s trash is Lucy’s own form of memory collecting.

When a night at the gallery goes terribly wrong, Lucy accidentally meets Nick, a struggling entrepreneur played by Stranger Things’ Dacre Montgomery. Together, the two team up to build Nick’s hotel into a new kind of gallery.

A place where anyone with a broken heart, whether in the past or currently, can bring their odd relationship souvenirs.

Lucy and Nick’s friendship develops throughout the film and gives audiences something to both laugh and cry over.

Along with an ensemble cast including Phillapa Sue, Molly Gordan, Arturo Castro, and Bernadette Peters, the characters teach each other that every broken heart can be made whole again.

70 Scenes of Halloween to be performed virtually u By Erin Hayhurst Contributor

With varying restrictions on CSC events, the theatre department has had to make some tough changes to their upcoming show.

70 Scenes of Halloween, a play about marriage and sanity, premiers this weekend for ticket reserved livestreams.

As Zak Wellnitz, 20, sophomore of Rushville, one of the leads of the show, summarizes: “70 scenes is about Jeff and Joan and their marriage and the hardships they have to go through… It also deals with Jeff’s descent into insanity.”

The switch to a live streamed show doesn’t only affect the audience. Wellnitz

elaborates on how this show will be different for the actors.

“It’s definitely going to be weird because this show is a comedy, drama, and horror,” Welnitz said. “It’ll be strange because we’ll have no reaction from the audience.”

He also talks about the difference in the set design.

“Our black box theatre has turned more into a movie studio,” Wellnitz said.

“It feels like the set of a sitcom, so it’s definitely a different feel with three big cameras in your face rather than an audience.”

To watch the production, all you have to do is go to the CSC theatre site and reserve your tickets. The times for the show include February 25-27, at 7:00 p.m. and February 28, at 2:00 p.m.

hile he was born in Topeka, Kansas, on May 26, 1899, Aaron Douglas enrolled in the fine arts program at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1918 after being inspired by his mother’s own artistic talents, according to the National Gallery of Art. Douglas has been noted as one of the first African Americans to graduate from the university. After he graduated in 1922, he was recruited to join the growing cultural movement in Harlem by Charles S. Johnson, the editor of the National Urban League’s “Opportunity.” While he initially declined the offer, Douglas eventually quit his teaching job in Kansas City, Missouri, and moved to New York to join the movement for racial equality.

Douglas went on to become a prominent visual artist in the Harlem Renaissance, expressing his desire for equality and love for art in pieces such as “Let My People Go” and “Into Bondage.” He died in Nashville in 1979 at the age of 80.

Malcolm X 1925-1965

M

alcolm Little was born in Omaha on May 19, 1925. After alleged reported threats from the Ku Klux Klan, the Little family moved to Michigan, according to history.com.

Malcolm’s father was allegedly murdered by white supremacists in 1931 and the family was denied his death benefits. Malcolm X entered the foster care system at age six after his mother suffered a nervous breakdown. By eighth grade he had dropped out of school and started dealing drugs. At 21, Malcolm X went to prison for larceny. In prison, he embraced the Muslim teachings and adopted the last name “X” as a rejection of his “slave” name. Six years later, he was released from prison and began advocating for civil rights by using the “by any means necessary” motto, something that went directly against prominent civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.’s idea of peaceful protest. In 1964, Malcolm X travelled to Mecca and underwent a “spiritual transformation.”

When he returned to America he came with a new name: El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz. In June of that year, he founded the Organization of Afro-American Unity and identified racism as the enemy of racial justice, not the white race. On Feb. 21, 1965, Malcolm X was assassinated by a Black Muslim at an Organization of Afro-American Unity rally in New York City.

Silas Robbins 1857-1916

S

ilas Robbins was born Feb. 14, 1857 in Ohio. Robbins came to Omaha in 1889 and is known for being the first African American lawyer in Nebraska, according to northomahahistory.com. He was also the first African American to be listed on the Douglas County Bar Association in 1892 and one of the first members of the Nebraska Bar Association, which was formed in 1899. Robbins largely represented African Americans who would not be accurately represented because of the color of their skin, a majority of his clients were found not guilty. In 1898, he ran for the Nebraska Legislature as a “fusion party” member. He didn’t win. However, when the Populist Party took power in Omaha in 1900, Robbins served as the Douglas County tax commissioner until 1901. He held the position again from 1903 to 1905. In 1915, he had surgery to remove a cancer in his head, however, the surgery didn’t help with the pain. Robbins committed suicide on September 11, 1916, by a gunshot wound to the head.

Bitter storm devastates Texas ranches u By Kamryn Kozisek Ag and Range Editor

Texas ranchers suffered their own version of the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre, when a winter storm named Shirley hit the state last week.

Texas’s Odessa College Head Rodeo Coach and rancher Tom Kelly felt that the storm caught ranchers by surprise,.

“Coming from Wyoming we knew how to handle the weather.” Said Kelly, “A lot of ranchers don’t know how to deal with the cold.”

Midwestern cattle producers raise breeds like Angus cattle to adapt to the cold winters.

Cattle producers at the southern end of the U.S., on the other hand breed for the opposite.

Many southern ranchers breed their cattle with Brahman or Texas Longhorn cattle, to better equip cattle to live in dry and hot conditions.

With cattle not built to live in the cold conditions, ranchers have had to work hard to help cattle survive the cold snap.

“Eared influence cattle or Brahmans are great cattle for hot weather, since they are originally from India.” Said Ron Bolze, CSC professor, “They have a thin skin and little hair covering on their bodies. I imagine that they are having a hard time in really cold conditions.”

With harsh conditions hitting at the beginning of calving season, many ranchers may see a loss of calves and mother cows alike.

As of right now there are no official numbers or predictions on how many cattle have died due to the storm.

Ranchers aren’t just having worry about the cold killing cattle but also the lack of water and available feed and forages.

Many ranchers rely on winter pasture as a main source of feed, with excessive snow cover some ranchers may have had to supplement feed.

“Supplements can be a great nutritive resource.” Said

Bolze during an animal nutrition lecture, “They can be expensive and need to be budgeted for to make sure they are worth the money.”

The weather also brought power outages that caused other problems for the ranching community.

Ranchers in many states use electric pumps to draw water into tanks. Lack of electricity also means that water tank heaters can’t be used to stop tanks from freezing.

Texas livestock owners have had to haul water and break water tanks open just to provide enough water to keep livestock alive.

Kelly is responsible for not only caring for his own beef cattle but also the livestock used by Odessa College to practice.

“It’s a full-time job providing water right now.” Said Kelly, “I have 200 rodeo stock animals that I have to haul water to from town.”

Water resources are important to all livestock producers and not all ranchers have easy access to a water source that runs without electricity.

The new playground is being installed at Fort Robinson State Park as a part of the 2021 upgrades.

Western upgrades u By Kamryn Kozisek Ag and Range Editor

Historical buildings and playground equipment are getting an upgrade at Nebraska’s Fort Robinson State Park.

The park is getting a western themed upgrades to its playground equipment, which will include a stage coach replica

and hay bales as part of the play equipment.

The historical lodging buildings are from the early 1800s and will be receiving inside and outside maintenance.

The two water towers found at the park are planned to be painted this year as part of the upgrades.

A handicap ramp is being installed on the porch of the main

building, which is used for lodging and as the parks headquarters.

A $1.27 million campground expansion is also being added to the park.

The ongoing Fort Robinson Aquatic Habitat project will be moving onto phase two. This phase includes Carter P. Johnson Lake and Crazy Horse pond renovations.

Fishing regulations booklet redesigned u By Kamryn Kozisek Ag and Range Editor

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission has updated its fishing regulations booklet for 2021.

The regulation booklet is available at the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission website and at places where fishing licenses are sold.

Changes were made in order to help anglers identify

species easier and see regulations for individual bodies of water.

The regulation booklet also starts out by listing regulation changes for specific areas or species.

Each fish species has an improved diagram so that anglers can identify fish species easily.

There is also an improved invasive aquatic species section that shows identification.

No major changes were made to fishing seasons.

CSC beef stewardship class open to public u By Kamryn Kozisek Ag and Range Editor

CSC is hosting a free public, beef based, class beginning on March 22.

North Dakota State University’s Extension Veterinarian Gerald Stokka will be teaching Introduction to a Stewardship Systems Approach to Beef Cattle Health and Well-being for the second eight weeks of this semester.

“The most important two words are in the title stewardship and systems.” Said Ron Bolze, “We often see a traditional approach to beef cattle production and its time for us

to start thinking about changing.”

Stokka has worked for Pfizer Animal health Veterinary Technical Services team and as the beef extension veterinarian for Kansas State University. He also served as a past president of the Academy of Veterinary Consultants.

The class is a Topics in Agriculture class which is chosen by Rangeland Management Professors; Teresa Frink, Anthony Perlinski, Dustin Luper and Ron Bolze. Each teacher and topic is selected in order to give students a chance to learn about an important agricultural topic not offered at CSC. Funding for Topics in Agriculture classes

The class can be taken for one college credit or attendee’s can attend for no credit or cost. The class will be held in the Rangeland Complex room 110 on Thursdays from 6:30-9 p.m.

“I think it would be helpful for the ranching community around here to attend this class.” Said Bolze, “That is why its at night, we hope to appeal to more members of the community.”

After having to postpone five games and losing to BHSU Tuesday, Feb. 16, Chadron State returned to the Chicoine Center with fans in attendance for their final home match against South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, Saturday.

ter, freshman of Las Vegas, shot a three-pointer with the intent to tie the game, and bring it into overtime. Ending with a rebound from Deundra Roberson, junior of Columbia Heights, Minnesota, following Walter’s missed shot, the Eagles came away with a close win over the Hardrockers, 63-60, and gained a 5-5 record.

With shots sinking throughout the night, Teddy Parham, Jr., junior of Los Angeles, put 32 points on the board and set his season high, being nine of 10 for two-point shots. Another season high that Parham set was five steals, earning

points from three of those steals; he grabbed four rebounds and sunk four shots from the arc.

“Teddy had an outstanding game, hit some shots for us,” Head Men’s Basketball Coach Shane Paben said. “I was really proud of the fact that Teddy drove to the basket, it wasn’t just three-pointers. Our biggest thing is to try to get the best shots available, and if someone is having a night we give that guy the ball a little bit more.”

Track athletes qualify just in time u By Mackenzie Dahlberg Sports Editor

Among last-minute qualifications for the upcoming conference meet and consistent performances in the jumps, Chadron State saw many high marks, and personal records set Saturday.

Naishaun Jernigan, sophomore of Springfield, Massachusetts, took first in the triple jump with a jump of 47 feet, 9.75 inches.

Coming behind Jernigan in second, Joss Linse, junior of Plattsmouth, leaped 47 feet, 3.75 inches in the triple jump.

“He finally put together a jump that gave him a PR, by an inch in the men’s triple jump,” Northrup said. “He was ready to have a big jump indoors last year and then COVID came and that put that on delay. Then this year, he was looking really good and he rolled his ankle. So that set him back like three weeks. Now, he finally came in and felt pretty good.”

Brock Voth, junior of Berthoud,

Colorado, ended up placing sixth in the triple jump, with a leap of 42 feet, 4.25 inches. With this jump, Voth qualified for the upcoming conference meet.

Morgan Fawver, freshman of McCook, won the long jump with a career personal record of 23 feet, 1.75 inches.

Emory Yoosook, freshman of Casper, Wyoming, jumped 22 feet, 2.5 inches in the long jump, setting a career personal record while taking second.

“Emory again came through with another season best,” Northrup said.

“I think he jumped almost 10 inches farther than he had so far this year. Got him safely into the Conference meet in the men’s long jump, which he wasn’t in before this weekend, so this lastchance meet really paid off.”

Dan Reynolds, freshman of Granby, Colorado, finished the weight throw fifth with a toss of 51 feet, 7 inches.

itor. Coach Northrup joined the two in hopes of pushing the two athletes past the mark they had been struggling with.

“It was rough,” Northrup said. “The last time that I high jumped in a competition was in 2016. I thought maybe if I got in with them, they’d get a little more energy, get a little my hype. You know, don’t want to lose to their old man coach. They had good jumps, and it was a lot of fun overall.”

Hannah Christie, freshman of Alpine, Wyoming, took first in the high jump, clearing the bar at 5 feet, 1 inch.

She finished runner-up in the 60 meters dash, with a run of 8.10 seconds, and fifth in the long jump with a leap of 16 feet, 0.25 inches.

Courtney Smith, sophomore of Rock Springs, Wyoming, out-threw her personal record in the weight throw with a mark of 51 feet, 1.5 inches, placing her fifth.

The Eagles will travel again to Spearfish, South Dakota, Friday, to compete in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference meet.

After having their 2020 season cut short, Eagles softball started their season with a series of games in Oklahoma, Sunday and Monday.

Chadron State played four games against four teams: Pittsburg State University, Oklahoma Christian University, Cameron University and the University of Central Oklahoma. The Oklahoma teams dominated over the Eagles, finishing their first series, 0-4.

Starting Sunday morning, Peyton Propp, sophomore of Lakewood, Colorado, pitched a run less first two innings with four strikeouts of the six outs. The Eagles, though also remaining scoreless, held the Gorillas to zero runs until the third inning, presenting the final score of the game, 5-0.

CSC continued their weekend against a similar mascot, Oklahoma Christian University Eagles, 2 p.m. Sunday. Tia Kohl, junior of Wichita, Kansas, started the game as pitcher being followed by Propp, who closed the game for CSC. Oklahoma Christian brought in 12 runs, winning over CSC, 12-0.

Following their scoreless Sunday, Chadron State played Cameron University in their first Monday game. The Eagles scored in their final inning, falling to Cameron University, 7-2.

Propp started the game pitching the first two innings, pitching

two strikeouts, but allowing four hits and four runs. Gabby Russell, junior of Oceanside, California, pitched the remaining four innings, allowing six hits and three runs.

Bailey Marvel, sophomore of Lakewood, Colorado, and Bailey Rominger, senior of Vail, Arizona, moved runners around the bases and brought people in for runs in the final inning.

When Marvel stepped up to the plate, she earned the first RBI for the season with a hit to left field, batting in Addison Spears, freshman of Berthoud, Colorado. Bailey Rominger hit past the second basemen to the right field, bringing in Ellie Owens, senior of Longmont, Colorado, to score the second run.

For their last match in their Oklahoma series, Kohl and Propp made an appearance as pitcher and was joined by Russell who closed out the game against the University of Central Oklahoma. Kohl pitched two strikeouts and Russell pitched one.

Russell accomplished another RBI in the batter’s box by clocking a hit down the right field line for a single and bringing Rominger in for a run. With the run, the Eagles lost by a difference of eight runs against Central Oklahoma, 9-1 Due to cold weather predicted for Sunday, CSC will have their home openers against the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs starting noon Friday and 11 a.m.

Saturday.

Chadron State hosted a match against American Volleyball Coaches Association No. 5 Colorado Mesa University, playing four sets Sunday in the Chicoine Center. The Eagles lost the first set 25-22, but won the second set, 25-20. They continued their fight against the high-ranked Mavericks but lost the third set 25-17, and the fourth 25-21.

The Eagles hold a 2-3 overall record and a 1-1 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference record.

Rylee Greiman, sophomore of Windsor, Colorado, attacked the most for the Eagles with 33 total attacks, 11 of which were kills. Offensively, Greiman set two assists and served one ace. Defensively, she blocked twice, a solo and an assisted; and dug seven attacks.

“Rylee is always a solid player for us,” Head Volleyball Coach Jennifer Stadler said in a message to the Eagle, “I thought her energy and lead-

ership on the court this weekend really helped our team out.”

Chandler Hageman, senior of Chadron, defended at the net with four solo blocks and four assisting blocks. Hageman earned seven kills of her 16 attacks for the night and dug three times.

Lexi Hurtado, sophomore of Aurora, Colorado, served points onto the board with three aces.

Along with a solo block, Hurtado also earned three assists, 13 digs, and six kills.

Breshawna Kelly, junior of Casper, Wyoming, earned herself 14 assists with her sets, and also contributed 10 digs to the team.

Kincaid Strain, junior of Elk River, Minnesota, set up 13 assists for the night. Strain served two ace serves, dug six attacks and killed one of her two attacks.

Karli Noble, senior of Cheyenne, Wyoming, attack-received 17 times.

“We are grateful for the opportunity to play at home in front of our fans,” Stadler said.

Chadron State is scheduled to play Regis University, 6 p.m. Friday, in the Chicoine Center.

Marcus Jefferson, junior of Lewisville, Texas, contributed 16 points to the team, six of 14 from the field, with two three-point shots and two free throws. Along with a steal, Marcus Jefferson led the night with five rebounds, and five assists.

Bryant Jefferson, sophomore of Palo Alto, California, crashed the boards for four rebounds, and scored six points, earning all points from the two-point field.

Psalm Maduakor, senior of Carson, California, and Roberson rebounded two times each, and stole the ball once each. Maduakor had an assist for the night, and Roberson earned two points from the free-throw line.

“Very proud of the guys,” Paben said. “I think in life, you always have opportunities to find excuses to quit instead of finding ways to be successful, and we’ve changed how we did our defense and offense. Our guys have adapted and learned and that’s always something that people should be proud of.”

CSC will travel to Colorado to finish their regular season against Metropolitan State University of Denver Friday, and Colorado Christian University Saturday. Both matches are scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m., following the women’s basketball game.
