Chadron’s men’s basketball team fell to a last-minute shot in overtime against South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, Thursday, Jan. 21, in Rapid City, South Dakota.

After being behind at the end of the first half, 32-24, the Eagles came back in the second to tie the score at 51 points, pushing the game into overtime.

In the last four seconds of overtime, Hardrocker Kolten Mortensen, junior of Santaquin, Utah, made a three-pointer, allowing South Dakota School of Mines to come away with the win by one point, 60-59.

Teddy Parham, Jr., junior of Los Angeles, reached a season high of 24 points, 9 of 15 from the field and 50% from the arc, while contributing three rebounds.

Jacob Jefferson, junior of Buckeye, Arizona, had 12 points for the night, being 5 of 10 from the field.

The Nebraska State College System Board of Trustees is mulling over a new draft policy that would protect student journalist from being censored by college administrations.

“We don’t really have anything in policy that specifically addresses freedom of speech as it related to student media,” Turman said.

“In light of that fact, we thought it would be best to consider establishing a policy that could address it and be in alignment with what may be state statutes down the line.”

Right now, there is no final draft of the policy that is ready to be put before the Board of Trustees, according to NSCS Chancellor Paul Turman. The system office is waiting on the progress of LB88, The Student Journalism

Protection Act sponsored by Senator Adam Morfeld, District 46, Lincoln, in the Nebraska Legislation.

“We would certainly wait for the pending legislation to work its way through the legislature this year because they still have opportunities for amendments and changes that may occur,” Turman said. “It may be improved by the legislature and then be vetoed by the governor. There are still a lot of things at play.”

At the college level, LB88, which is set for a public hearing at the state Capitol building in Lincoln on Friday at 1:30 p.m. Central Standard Time, is a preventative measure intended to protect public colleges and public universities from a 2005 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals decision in Hosty v. Carter that gave college administrators the right to censor student media in Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin.

It also protects students at the public high

school level from the Supreme Court’s 1998 Hazelwood v. Kuhlmeier decision that gave high school administrators the right to censor student media as well as protecting advisors from retaliation for protecting their students First Amendment rights.

“I think, had Senator Morfeld not brought legislation the two bienniums, this may not be a topic,” Turman siad. “It’s raised questions on our campuses and policies or guidelines help put a palce of emphasis for people to go to to understand how a state law or potential state law impacts what we should and should not be doing on our state campuses.”

The draft policy closely mirrors the language of the bill, Turman said. If the bill was to become law, the policy would be updated to comply with the terms and be broader then the terms of the law.

News Mari Sandoz life exhibit on display

u By CSC College Relations The life and accomplishments of Mari Sandoz will be showcased through March 5 in the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center. Hours are Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. and Friday 10 a.m. to noon. The Sandoz Center’s accessibility is subject to change in accordance with COVID-19 protocols.

The “Legendary Legacy of Mari Sandoz” exhibit includes wooden crates of metal printing plates from three of Sandoz’s books, several awards, maps, drawings, news stories, letters, and a variety of memorabilia such as a play script, a sculpture, a child’s piggy bank, and photos from the 1964 Cheyenne Autumn movie set. The history of the center and Mari Sandoz Heritage Society are also described in documents on display.

Holly Counts, who organized the exhibit, said the publishers were going to melt down the metal printing plates for new books if Sandoz did not purchase them. She decided to save Old Jules, Slogum House, and Crazy Horse.

“She loved these books so much, she didn’t want the plates to be melted. Visitors to the center can look at these plates and handle them,” Counts said.

Also on display is a small replica of the Crazy Horse monument given to Sandoz in appreciation for her participation on the commission that planned the monument northwest of Custer, South Dakota.

Mary Bryan Forsyth’s original illustrations for Sandoz’s book Love Song of the Plains are also part of the exhibit. After Sandoz’s death, Forsyth was selected to sculpt the bust of Sandoz for the Hall of Fame in the capitol building in Lincoln. A large drawing of the bust and other related information is included in the show.

Mencia to replace Klueber as NSCS student trustee u By Sullivan Jones News Editor

A replacement for Konery Klueber, the current Chadron State College student trustee to the Nebraska State College System has been filled.

Ruth Mencia, Junior of Grand Island will replace Klueber once his term ends at the conclusion of the spring semester.

Her tenure will be split into three sections. One in which she works as an apprentice with Klueber, one working independently and the final to train her replacement.

Mencia has worked as a residential advisor on campus for over two years. She says that and experience on Campus Activity Board made her realize she wanted to advocate for students as trustee.

“I originally heard about the position when I joined the CAB my freshman year. During my experience in senate, I’ve witnessed and observed the student trustee position directly.

This allowed me to gain a further understanding of what the position entails,” Mencia said.

As part of the position, Mencia will attend regular Student Senate meetings to gain greater student insight about campus activies and other stu- Ruth Mencia dent perspectives.

Using that information, Mencia will report back to the NSCS Board of Trustees to provide them with an insight of student perspective and opinion about potential NSCS policy changes.

She says she also wants to ensure that campus community members’ physical, emotional and mental wellness is preserved – especially given the current pandemic.

Mencia currently serves as the CAB chair on Student Senate. She says she has benefitted from that and other positions held on student government, which included being a representative and vice chair of records on CAB. “I have benefitted from my time with student senate the most through my personal leadership growth, as well as the connections that my positions have offered me,” Mencia said.

“Having the opportunity to work with stu-

dent government, specifically with my role within CAB has been extremely rewarding to me because of the ability for me to work with a large organization of diverse individuals.”

As Mencia continues her work with senate, she anticipates various but solvable challenges.

“Working with a multitude of individuals entails various perspectives that may differ.

Thankfully, our Senate is made up of individuals that are open-minded and willing to discuss our thoughts before coming to a unanimous decision or majority vote,” she said.

After college, Mencia plans to join the Air Force before attending UNMC to earn a master’s of public health and social work.

She hopes one day to become a bilingual healthcare social worker within the military.

Student Senate adds five to ranks

Three associate Constitutional Court justices and two diversity senators sworn in u By Sullivan Jones News Editor

On Monday, Student Senate held its second meeting of the semester after taking last Monday off during Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The senate chamber was fuller than during the senate’s first meeting when attendance was down substantially. Contributing to the increase in attendance may be a result of the new meeting time of 4 p.m.

At the first meeting, Vice President Abby Klammer blamed class times of some senators at 5 p.m. for low attendance.

Another reason for high attendance at Monday’s meeting results from the presence of 5 new members sworn in by Chief Justice Nathan Cronin.

Two diversity senators and three associate justices of senate’s constitutional court were sworn in with another justice scheduled to be sworn in.

Toni Lopez, 19, Freshman of Limon, Colorado was one of two diversity senators sworn in. She hopes to learn senate’s modus operandi before considering major legislation goals.

“I want to first learn what goes on; I want to inform myself about everything, and then hopefully we can make some new changes around the school,” said Lopez after the meeting.

Lopez is also currently a member of the campus Diversity Club.

The other diversity senator sworn in was Siddhant Shelke, 22, Sophomore of India.

“I wanted to join senate because I recognize the work they do and I thought I could be helpful, and I just wanted to make some difference if I can,” Shelke said after the meeting.

Lopez Brings his experience from the Campus Activity Board’s Activity Fee Board to senate and also remains active on the AFB. The three students sworn into the Constitutional Court included the following: Lena Aslan, 21, Senior of Elizabeth, Colorado; Samantha Carrillo, 21, Junior of Alliance; and Michael Gomez, 23, Senior of Alliance.

All of the new justices are majoring in criminal justice.

“I look forward to being on the Constitutional Court because it allows me to give voice to the opinions of my peers and my own. Together we are forming and creating the future of how the Student Senate sees and hears cases,” said Carillo.

After new members were sworn in, Chief Justice Cronin spent time delivering a formal Constitutional Court opinion about a case involving petitioner Vice President Klammer v. BMS senator Chinaza Nwosa.

“Vice President exercises this right by filing a petition against said senator for claims of unexcused absences multiple times at the regular senate meetings during the fall of 2020,” said Cronin.

According to the opinion, Nwosa disputed the accusations of unexcused absences and requested a hearing but failed to file the appropriate petition for hearing. As a result, the court ordered Nwosa to strictly follow attendance policies.

The court opinion did not mention sanctions if Nwosa violates the attendance policies again.

Beethoven Recital to happen on campus Allessandra Feris from the University of South Dakota will perform several of Beethoven’s piano Sonatas in a recital in the Sandoz Center Chicoine Atrium, Friday Jan. 29 from 7 – 8 p.m.

The recital is to celebrate the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth through some of his most im-

pressive bodies of piano work.

‘Time’s Up’ on being afraid to be a woman

W

hen I was a teenager, I was told a lot of things about how I should behave.

‘Never show too much skin, you don’t want to look like you’re asking for it.’

‘Wear makeup, but not too much. You don’t want to give someone the wrong impression.’

The list goes on and on. We grow into adulthood knowing that one in six women get sexually assaulted and dread the thought that we might become one of those women that become part of a statistic.

Now, all of those things are what make up our scars. As young adults, we hold so much anxiety over what can happen to us simply because we might be wearing something that is a little more revealing. We can’t let our guards down when we’re alone in public because we’re afraid that someone might do something to us. At night we walk in groups because we learned a long time ago that we are less likely to get attacked or kidnapped if there is more than one of us out. This is something myself and my fellow female editors do every night when walking home from the newsroom. Is something likely to happen to us if we go out

The South Dakota Legislature started debate on House Bill 1076 on Tuesday and failed it in a House committee. The bill according to the official South Dakota Legislature website was stated as “An act to require that birth certificates reflect biological sex.”

Currently in South Dakota, it is not required to have a sex reassignment surgery before changing sex on your birth certificate. After failing the motion, the committee deferred the bill to the 41st legislative

day, which is a motion that kills the bill because there are no more than 40 days in a legislative session. With six yeas and seven neas to pass the bill, it was barely failed.

The representatives Fred Deutsch, Phil Jensen, Marli Wiese, Kevin Jensen, Carl Perry and Kaleb Weis all voted in favor of the bill’s passing.

Representatives Paul Miskimins, Tamara St. John, Aaron Aylward, Jennifer Healy Keintz, Erin Healy, Sydney Davis and Taylor Rae Rehfeldt voted in the prevailing to fail the bill.

Emotions and personal feelings don’t make news u By Sullivan Jones Columnist

American culture inevitably changes, but in my lifetime, I suspect our culture has changed more dramatically than other major culture shifts in U.S. history – such as the Roaring Twenties.

Fueling our current culture shift is contemporary yellow journalism, which does nothing more than inflame the passions of the ordinarily solemn-toned Americans. The things that don’t, shouldn’t or wouldn’t bother us are now dragged to our sympathy – or lack thereof – and inflated to bolstering proportionality leaving us to choose one side: right, or

wrong – black or white – and the yellow journalists of today make it obvious which side is right.

I’m not saying the news doesn’t present truth to viewers or readers, but they present it in a non-objective and sensationalized manner. For example, when is the last time anyone viewed a cable news channel and heard someone speak in a monotone voice?

Certainly inferences are made by viewers watching a news anchor literally cry about Hillary Clinton’s loss – or how about the tone of outrage or disappointment expressed at the latest Donald Trump executive order?

Two consequences result from such emotionally expressive language by news anchors:

First, people automatically lose the ability to form a first impression on the objective and substantive part of the news because they make interpretations and pick up cues from the anchor’s emotional tone. Real news should leave emo-

tion out of reporting facts because real facts should spark the listeners emotions.

Second, the emotions expressed by news anchors inflame the passions of the people when calm consideration of the facts would ordinarily follow fair reporting. As a result, people become emotional about something they have no legitimate stake in.

Put another way, people inherently become attached to the pain or excitement of others.

Unfortunately, news reporting today – especially television news reporting – is all about forcing your feelings onto your audience to garner more attention than deserved; even though the news should be quite boring.

But furthermore, once people are enraged by the news to a point of erupting at the television, they can spew venomous feelings on social media without thinking critically or listening to the other side. Of course, they do so because listening to the whining on television has taught them that emotion is the king of debate.

Essentially, the emotion laden news of today causes people to be inconsiderate of legitimate opposing arguments – people don’t consider the facts, only the force with which the facts are presented. This results in disbelief and shock that outside views exist. Thus, polarized sides advance radical agendas within a bubble because common ground has no room to exist.

Lifestyles Stay gold: rereading S.E. Hinton’s “The Outsiders” u By Erin Hayhurst Contributor

“When I stepped out into the bright sunlight from the darkness of the movie house, I had only two things on my mind: Paul Newman and a ride home.” Many of us could recognize this opening line from middle school reading assignments. Teachers have assigned S.E. Hinton’s “The Outsiders” in middle-level reading classes for decades.

While some have picked up the novel a few times after that initial read, many have left it on the shelf since seventh or eighth grade. I was one of the latter so this summer, during quarantine, I decided to pick it up again and I am very glad that I did.

For anyone who has not read the book or who doesn’t remember, “The Outsiders” centers around the life of a 14-year-old ‘Greaser’ named Ponyboy Curtis. ‘Greaser’ is the slang term used to describe Ponyboy and his friends due to their lower social class and slicked back hair. Ponyboy is trapped in a life divided by social class; the Greasers vs. the Socs, short for Socials. The Socials are the rich kids on the other side of town. The Socs have it all while

Ponyboy’s older brothers Darry and Sodapop have to work full time, even two jobs, to keep the family together.

The fellow Greasers are also like family to Ponyboy, like the skittish pet of the gang Johnny Cade or the troubled hothead Dallas Winston. With the constant fear of getting jumped by Socs or getting hauled in by the cops, Greasers have to stick together for survival.

The book deals with the struggles of social divide in 1960s Tulsa by making the reader see through Ponyboy’s eyes. We feel his desperation and frustration as the book progresses; seeing him and Johnny on the run after a fight with a group of Socs goes terribly wrong, sensing the anger and fierce energy during the rumble, and feeling the connection and endearment between his family and friends, all leading up to the novel’s intense and heartbreaking climax.

S.E. Hinton’s storytelling serves as a reminder of not only the importance of friendship, but also the importance of unity as a society. Ponyboy’s experience is meant to show us that no matter where we come from, what our own experiences are, whether we’re a Greaser or a Soc, we all watch the same sunset at the end of the day.

CSC shares guidelines for cross country trails u By CSC College Relations Chadron State College is pleased to provide access to several trails bordering campus. And, in order to help keep trails healthy, all users are encouraged to follow the college’s trail guidelines.

While walking or running on an unpaved trail, avoid rutted areas to encourage re-growth of buffalo grass.

When trails are damp and muddy, turn back. Footprints can lead to ruts or mud holes in the trail.

Grounds Supervisor Lucinda Mays encourages visitors to help grow CSC’s unpaved trails.

“The (cross country) trail is all buffalo grass and only watered through

natural precipitation, no irrigation is used,” Mays said.

Mays hopes to develop the trail into a running surface for both cross country and community use.

CSC maintains its unpaved trails like the C-Hill trail, the cross country course, and the Tenth St. Trail, but when those trails are muddy or wet, consider paved routes like the Sandoz Heritage Trail, which is maintained

by CSC’s grounds crew through the winter. You can also care for CSC’s trails by yielding to pedestrians while cycling and keeping dogs leashed and picking up after them. No motorized vehicles or horses are allowed on any of CSC’s trails.

Governor Pete Ricketts has named January human trafficking awareness month. Human trafficking in the U.S. has been a growing issue as more victims come forward.

The Nebraska Family Alliance (NFA) estimate that worldwide 5 million people are victims of sex trafficking and 15 million labor trafficked. 25% of these victims are children and 71% of them are female.

According to the Deliver Fund every 2.5 hours a child becomes the victim of human trafficking. The fund also states that each child that is a victim of sex trafficking is purchased for sex 5.4 times a day.

Nationally every 1 in 6 children will be a victim of human trafficking in the U.S. according to the Nebraska attorney general. The world population review rates the U.S. to have the worst human trafficking rates of any developed country.

The Polaris Project is an organization that works to fight human trafficking in the U.S. in 2019 they were called to 11,500 situations and worked with 22,326. There were 15,222 females and 3,003 males, the rest are unknown.

The human trafficking hotline which calculates

its statistics through calls they receive in 2019 they received 91 victim calls in Nebraska. At least 22 of these calls were high indicator calls meaning they are considered to be cases of human trafficking.

of human trafficking each year. This number is considered by the NFA to be an underestimate to the true number. The survey used to calculate that number had a 6% response rate.

Prior to 2015 in Nebraska activities that were

related to human trafficking were not considered criminal. Those activities that were covered by law had low penalties.

In 2015, a bill that allowed victims to peruse civil remedy against trafficking. Then in 2018 penalties for human traffickers increased and reporting requirements for sexual assault increased. By 2019 the statue of limitations for sex trafficking was eliminated.

The prosecution and convictions of human traffickers in Nebraska has been increasing since 2018, with the last four convictions taking place in Scottsbluff.

Though human trafficking is often portrayed as kidnapping, according to the Polaris Project most cases of human trafficking occur when the victim knew the traffickers. Marriage proposals or significant others were the biggest type of traffickers, the second was family connections.

Sex trafficking involves forcing someone to perform sexual acts, where the trafficker receives financial gain. People can be victims of sexual trafficking, while still living at home and going to school.

Labor trafficking is considered to be forced labor with out pay. Often times the trafficker will use threats to coerce victims into working.

Mountain lions are native to Nebraska but were killed off in the late 1800s according to Nebraska Game and Parks. There have been efforts in the last few years to reintroduce the species into the pine ridge ecosystem. Theses efforts were successful enough that four lion tags have been given out.

The regulations for this season are strict, with only four harvest but only two females can be killed.

Once two females have been killed the season is over, to ensure no others are harvested.

In Nebraska dogs are not permitted to be used in mountain lion hunting until Feb. 28, if the quotas have not been reached by then, dogs can be used in the auxiliary season. The auxiliary season runs from March 13-31 or until quotas have been filled.

The Pine Ridge is the only place in Nebraska open to mountain lion hunting, the season will remain an annual season unless mountain lion numbers drop.

The lion hunt is a lottery draw, each hunter may fill out one application for the tags. Once a tag is received the hunter is expected to call the phone number provided on the tag to make sure that the

season is still open and that quotas have not been filled.

Once the tag has been filled, the hunter has eight hours to report the kill and must leave gender naturally attached to the animal.

Only adult, lone mountain lions can be harvested. An animal that has any show of spots on its pelt is considered a kitten and if more than one mountain lion is traveling together they can not be harvested. Hunters can harvest tagged or collared animals.

These seasons quotas have been filled with three males and one female mountain lion, no auxiliary season will follow because the limit has been reached.

The U.S. is the largest milk producing country in the world, but overall milk consumption in the U.S. has decreased from 21.5 gallons per person in 2004 to almost 17 gallons in 2019.

The delicate nature of dairy products caused the industry to be poorly affected by COVID-19.

Dairy products are perishable and have to be delivered quickly, they are also temperature sensitive and have to be transported by specialized equipment.

The Journal of Integrative Agriculture (JIA) states that approximately 5% of U.S. milk product produced in April 2020 had to be discarded, this rate continued to rise through June. The journal also states that 2.3% more milking cows were slaughtered in April 2020, than in previous years.

According to JIA, the U.S. dairy industry suffered as a result of

grocery stores being closed. When the pandemic first began there was a rush to purchase products including dairy products, but when people began ordering groceries online the purchase of dairy products dropped.

Socially, it is not widely accepted to use dry or bagged milk in the U.S., these products last longer and can easily be purchased through online delivery. The lack of these products in the U.S. prevented citizens from purchasing dairy products online.

The U.S. exports 15% of its dairy products annually but this increased in the first 6 months of 2020 due to increased dry dairy product exports according to JIA. The increase export of dry milk products did not stop financial difficulties from affecting U.S. dairy farmers.

Trade conflictions during the pandemic did cause a loss for the dairy industry as major exports were lost in milk and cheese products.

The lack of trading of dairy products that are not dry combined with lack of U.S. buyers during the pandemic caused financial loss for large and small dairy farms.

The U.S. dairy industry is considered by dairy farmers to be unstable according to JIA, most dairies do not ensure that their business will continue in the next five years.

The number of dairy farms has been dropping since 1992 according to Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), due to larger dairy farms driving out smaller dairy farms.

The loss of jobs and money may also impact U.S. citizen purchases of dairy products. Based on the development of countries from developing to developed countries, it is assumed that as people gain wealth they often purchase more meat and dairy products.

As wealth drops in the U.S., the purchase of dairy products may also continue to fall.

The first genetically altered meat production animals have been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

On Dec. 14 the FDA announced their approval of Intentional Genomic Alteration (IGA) in domestic pigs. The approval was given to a company called Revivicor which is working to produce medicines through pig transplants.

These pigs known as GalSafe pigs will be used for food, the name GalSafe comes from the genetic removal of alpha-gal gene from meat. The reason for the cell removal is to allow people with an allergy to the alpha-gal genes to be able to eat red meat.

The future goal of GalSafe pigs is to be able to use the pigs for medical uses including xenotransplants. Xenotransplants are using

pigs tissues to repair tissue damage on human bodies. The failure of some xenotransplants has been linked to alpha-gal cells rejecting tissue growth. The pigs have not been approved to be used for medical purposes.

Revivicor hopes to be in trial for producing GalSafe insulin produced from cloned pigs within the next three years. The company funded through the U.S. Department of Defense is hoping to produce vaccines, which are in the pre-trial step in production.

The FDA preformed many exams of the pigs to ensure that they were healthy for humans to eat and not damaging to the environment. The pigs were deemed by the FDA to not be damaging to the environment when compared to conventional domestic pigs.

The meat from GalSafe pigs will not be sold in grocery stores to begin with, the meat will be sold through the mail.

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission is hosting a monthly virtual chat called Conservation Career Chat.

On the third Monday of each month, starting Jan. 20, a professional working for the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission will be speaking about what it is like to do their job.

The order starting in January, the speakers will be an outdoor education specialists, a zoologist,

an aquatic invasive species program manager, a conservation officer, a public relations manager, a fisheries outreach program manger, a public information officer/ Nebraskaland photographer, a private lands biologist, a recreation planner, a Nebraska natural legacy biologist, a park superintendent and finish with a carnivore program manager.

The chats will begin at 10 a.m. central standard time. Each event will be recorded on the Game and Parks Education YouTube channel.

Marcus Jefferson, junior of Lewisville, Texas, also had two assists, and seven rebounds. Markus Jefferson also contributed eight points. Psalm Maduakor, senior of Carson, California, led the night with 10 rebounds.

“The loss against Tech was disconcerting because we shot poorly from the free throw-line,” Head Men’s Basketball Coach Shane Paben said. “With that fact, we probably should’ve finished the game and won. I think it’s the mindset of not feeling sorry for ourselves and dealing with adversity which we showed last night that we can handle it pretty well.”

CSC men’s basketball team returned home to face Black Hills State University. With fans back in the Chicoine Center, the Eagles squashed the Yellow Jackets, 7158.

“It was good,” Paben said. “It’s still about health and the safety of our student athletes. I understand and it’s nice to see people in the stands, but health and safety are still the most paramount concerns in my mind.”

Leading the night for the Eagles was Deundra Roberson, junior of Columbia Heights, Minnesota, with 17 points, 7 of 12 from the field. Roberson also had two rebounds and two assists.

Marcus Jefferson was right behind reaching a season high with 16 points, 50% from the field and 3 of 3 from the arc. Marcus Jefferson

snagged seven rebounds and contributed five assists for the night.

Parham was 6 of 11 from the field, making two shots from the arc and contributing 14 points.

Parham had two assists and four boards.

Brady Delimont, senior of Ainsworth, and Psalm Maduakor, senior of Carson California both hit 10 points and had an assist each. Delimont contributed three rebounds for the night and Maduakor grabbed five.

Chadron was 51.8% from the field, with 28 points in the paint, eight fast break points and nine shots made from the arc. Even though the score was tied three times throughout the game, the Eagles never lost the lead to the Yellow Jackets.

Black Hills State University finished the game 56.1% from the field with four shots made from the arc, 34 points in the paint and 18 fast break points.

“I’m just really happy and proud of our guys,” Paben said.

“The way they rebounded from the loss and from the injury and how we picked up the slack and how we adjusted quickly. I’m really proud of them yesterday. We beat a really talented Black Hills team.”

Following Tuesday’s competition, the Eagles men’s basketball team holds a record of 4-4, with a 4-2 record for home games.

The Eagles will face Metropolitan State University of Denver, Saturday in the Chicoine Center.

The night will start with the women’s basketball team at 5:30 p.m., followed by the men’s at 7:30 p.m.

Many Eagles ended up on top of their event Saturday at the Myrle Hanson Track and Field Meet at Black Hills State University, in Spearfish, South Dakota.

“This weekend was actually really good for us,” Head Track and Field Coach Riley Northrup said. “I just got done going through our top ten list, we actually had six performances. Anytime somebody is getting on the top ten of all time at CSC list, it’s usually because they had a pretty impressive performance.”

Morgan Fayer, sophomore of McCook, finished first in the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.86 seconds and first in the 200-meter, timed for 22.51 seconds. Fayer also finished second in long jump, marking a leap of 21 feet, 10.75 inches.

In the 400m, four Eagles took the top five places, Osvaldo Cano, sophomore of Oshkosh, took first timed at 50.17 seconds. Third place was Osiel Cano, sophomore of Oshkosh at 52.16 seconds; fourth place with a time of 52.39 seconds was Harley Rhoades, junior of

Douglas, Wyoming; and fifth place was Greg Logsdon, freshman of Torrington, Wyoming timed for 52.49 seconds.

Osvaldo Cano, Osiel Cano, Rhoades, and Logsdon were a part of the 4x400 relay team, taking first with a time of 3:27.03.

Shane Collins, sophomore of Bison, South Dakota, took first in the shot put, throwing 48 feet, 7.5 inches, and fifth in the weight throw with a mark of 50 feet, 5.5 inches.

Parker Gonser, freshman of Winsor, Colorado threw 47 feet, 11.75 inches in the shot put, placing second. Dan Reynolds, freshman of Granby, Colorado, threw 42 feet, 6.75 inches, placing sixth in the shot put. Reynolds also took third in the weight throw, marking at 54 feet, 10.25 inches.

Naishaun Jernigan, sophomore of Springfield, Massachusetts, finished first in long jump, leaping 22 feet, 9.75 inches.

Derrick Nwagwu, sophomore of Aurora, Colorado, jumped 46 feet, 4.25 inches, taking first place in the triple jump.

With a jump of 44 feet, 9 inches, Joss Linse, junior of Plattsmouth, finished second in the triple jump. Linse also took fifth in long jump with a leap of 20 feet, 3.75 inches.

Taking first and second place in the high jump at 6 feet, 4 inches was Joe Dumsa, junior of Sandy Utah, and Alec Penfield, sophomore of Lusk, Wyoming. Dumsa also took third in long jump with a mark of 20 feet, 7.25 inches.

Pete Brown, sophomore of Oxford, earned 4,204 points in the heptathlon, taking second place. Dylan Soule, freshman of Polk, took fourth in the heptathlon with 3,643 points.

For the women’s events, Caitlyn Mueller, freshman of Sidney, finished the 60m hurdles with a time of 9.97 seconds, taking first place.

Mueller took fifth in the 200-meter, timed for 28.95 seconds.

Courtney Smith, sophomore of Rock Springs, Wyoming, threw 50 feet, 1.75 inches in the weight throw placing third, and 39 feet, 3.75 inches in the shot put placing fifth.

Michaela Hill, sophomore of Eaton, Colorado, placed third in the 400 meters with a time of 1:03.14.

Miranda Gilkey, junior of Lusk, Wyoming took second in the high jump, clearing the bar at 5 feet, 3 inches. Gilkey also took third in the triple jump with a mark of 33 feet, 5.25 inches.

“So, this is her (Gilkey) third year at Chadron, and she has had a rough go of things,

just complications with injuries and just ups and downs,” Northrup said. “She finally started looking really good in practice coming back in January, and finally had a good weekend. So, I was really excited to see that for her.”

Close behind, Destiney Pelton, freshman of Fort Morgan, Colorado took third in the high jump, clearing 5 feet, 1 inch, and Austin Alexander, freshman of Newell, South Dakota took fourth in the triple jump with a leap of 32 feet, 3.75 inches.

In the pentathlon, Julianne Thomsen, junior of Custer, South Dakota took first place with 3,092 points. Following Thomsen, Johannah Christie, freshman of Alpine Wyoming took second with 2,829 points and Parker Mooren, freshman of Casper Wyoming took third with 2,480 points.

The Eagles’ next meet will be the Charlie Foster Classic on Saturday in Kearney. The field events are scheduled to start at 11 a.m. and the running events are scheduled for 1:30 p.m.

“Based on their performances last week, and a combination of their going to get a nice, quality week of practice this week, I would expect to see even better performances at this coming weekend,” Northrup said.

The Eagles fell at the end of their first home dual against Colorado Mesa University, Thursday night in the Chicoine Center, 34-12.

The night started with heavyweight Mason Watt, sophomore of Broomfield, Colorado, winning his match following the injury of his opponent Gabriel Carranza, freshman of Victorville, California, starting out the night 6-0 for the Eagles.

Sebastian Robles, junior of Port Orchard, Washington, started his 149-weight match with a takedown in the first period and an escape in the second. Maverick Ryan Wheeler had a takedown in the second period, making the score 3-2, allowing Robles to win his match with a decision.

Preston Renner, sophomore of Westminster, Colorado, earned a

decision win against Dyllan Fuchs, sophomore of Spring Creek, Nevada, 7-3. Renner was taken down in the first period, but he earned himself an escape point before the end of the three-minute period. He earned another escape point second period before taking down Fuchs twice, once in the second and third.

The Eagles fell to the Mavericks in the last four matches of the night in 165-pound, 174-pound, 184-pound, and 197-pound weight classes, earning pins in Colorado Mesa’s favor.

“I think the biggest improvement is our younger guys understanding the mental mistakes during matches,” Head Wrestling Coach Hunter Brett said. “Normally, we would’ve had 15 to 25 matches already. These young guys would’ve learned that by now.”

Adam State took a 25-0 lead within the first six weight classes.

At 174-pounds, No. 4 Rowdy Pfeil, freshman of Moorcroft, Wyoming, won his match with a major decision, 10-2, and put points up for Chadron.

“I try not to think about it because personally I think rankings are more for the spectator than the competitor,” Pfeil said in a message to the Eagle. “My experiences as a freshman have shown me that everyone at the collegiate level is good. I still get beat up in the practice room plenty

enough to keep me humble.”

Eli Hinojosa, sophomore of Imperial, also took his match with a major decision against Adam State’s Cole Gustavson, at 197-pounds. Heavyweight Mason Watt followed with a pin against Nathan Ellis, freshman of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Despite the effort, the Eagles finished 31-14 against Adams State University.

The Eagles faced Newman University Jets, with two open weight classes, 133 and 165.

Ritzen, Preston Renner, Pfeil, and Hinojosa won their matches with a decision, each contributing three points to the team.

“Competition has been the greatest way for me to find what I need to work on when I’m wrestling and also to find what works the best for me to prepare for my matches,” Pfeil said.

Robles pinned his opponent, Jet Tyler Lawley, senior of Wichita, Kansas, adding six points to the team’s total, and allowing the Eagles to get

their first win under their belt, 30-12.

Tate Stoddard, sophomore of Glenrock, Wyoming, pinned Mule Trevor Wishne, freshman of Lee’s Summit, Missouri, starting the Eagles strong with six points against University of Central Missouri. The points quickly added up with four open weight classes in 133, 141, 149, and heavyweight.

Pfeil and Joseph Renner, freshman of Englewood, Colorado, earned decision wins over their opponents, Pfeil scoring 4-1 and Joseph Renner scoring 7-2. Hinojiso followed by pinning Joe Brady, junior of Kansas City, Missouri, closing the Eagles Saturday duels with another win, 42-6.

Both Pfeil and Hinojosa finished their Saturday duals 3-0. The Eagles finished the Midwest duals 2-1, improving their record to 2-3. The Eagles will face Colorado State University-Pueblo, 4 p.m. tonight in Pueblo, Colorado.
