On Saturday, after days of waiting on mail-in votes to be counted, it was announced that Vice President Joe Biden would be the 46th president of the United States.

“I pledge to be a president who seeks not to divide, but to unify — who doesn’t see red and blue states, but a United States,” Biden said in his victory speech Saturday, according to The New York Times. “And who will work with all my heart to win the confidence of the whole people.”

Since the announcement, President Donald Trump has been doing everything he can to fight the results. The Trump campaign launched a lawsuit over

Pennsylvania’s presidential election, saying that “Democratic-heavy counties” violated the law by identifying mail-in ballots that had defects before Election Day so the voter could fix the defect and ensure that their vote would be counted, according to the Associated Press. The lawsuit asks the court to prevent the state from certifying the results of the election.

“We are very close to the automatic recount statute in Pennsylvania and this lawsuit itself could change that or swing that small discrepancy,” Matthew Morgan, Trump campaign general counsel, said in a news conference in Washington, according to the AP. The Trump campaign has also filed lawsuits using the same claims in Arizona, Georgia, Michigan and Wisconsin according to the AP. There has yet to be any signs of voter fraud in any of these states.

Senate ends discussion on You@CSC funding  By Sullivan Jones Reporter

After debating funding You@CSC for three weeks, Student Senate chose finally to not spend any money on the expiring website at Monday’s meeting.

“We’re just going to go ahead and finalize the discussion on You@CSC, so we don’t drag it out one more week,” Senate President Lily Umeta said.

After the website discussion ended, senate heard from Frances Gonzalez of the Chadron Caring and Sharing charity organization. Bartlett was present to request assistance from senate to fulfill Caring and Sharing’s goal of providing Christmas gifts to senior citizens across Chadron.

“The seniors are really in need, especially this year since they have been isolated and alone. We want to reach out to them, even more this year than in the past,” Bartlett said.

She said Caring and Sharing plans on sending out Christmas stockings filled with various items to over 100 Chadron seniors and is looking to Senate for help.

Additionally, anyone considering supporting Caring

and Sharing may buy a gift card from the caring and sharing Christmas tree at Walmart which would then be given to a senior by the organization.

Though senate chose no specific items for purchase at the meeting, it allocated $250 to purchase some form of stocking stuffers after senators floated various ideas within the chamber.

In another allocation move, $125 was given to support the CSC’s administration of the National Survey of Student Engagement.

Specifically, the $125 will be used to provide five incentive gift cards that students who complete the Spring survey will have a chance to win.

Student Trustee Konery Klueber reported that the school received four applications to replace his position and that three would be selected to send to the governor for his selection.

“All four were very qualified so I have no doubt that regardless of who is selected we will be in good hands,” he said.

New DHM ordered Wednesday THE EAGLE COVID-19 REPORT

New Directed Health Measures changed in Nebraska, Wednesday, setting stricter guidelines to try and ensure people’s health and lessen the spread of COVID-19. These new measures are scheduled to remain in effect until at least Nov. 30.

Governor Pete Ricketts announced the changes Monday. The following day, Ricketts and First Lady Susanne Shore were put into quarantine for 14 days due to meeting up with a person that tested positive for COVID-19 Monday. The two currently aren’t showing any symptoms, and they will get tested when appropriate.

As for the changes of the DHM, six feet distance is required in gyms and fitness centers, health spas, restaurants, bar, gentlemen and bot-

tle clubs, weddings, funerals, indoor gatherings, and churches and places of worship.

Masks are required at salons, barbershops, massage therapy, bowling alleys, pool halls, body art establishments, and any other indoor businesses where staff and customers are within six feet of each other for 15 minutes or more.

Fan attendance for indoor extracurricular activities, both clubs and school sponsored events, are limited to household members of participants.

Restaurants, bars, etc. will be able to remain open for dine-in services. Customers are required to be seated unless they are placing an order, using the restroom, or playing games. Six feet of separation will remain between tables and bar seating, but 100% occupancy is allowed. Eight people is the maximum allowed at a table, if the group is larger, the group will be split. Unless eating or drinking, patrons are required to wear a mask.

Churches and places of worship won’t have a limit to occupancy but requires that people remain six feet distance. Weddings and funeral receptions should follow the maximum of eight people to a group, and dancing at weddings is allowed if individuals remain at their tables and keep social distancing between groups.

Indoor gatherings will be 25% occupancy, while outdoor gatherings will remain at 100%. Indoor carnivals and dances are prohibited. Groups will remain smaller than eight people, and six feet will be required between groups. Gyms, fitness centers, health clubs, or any other location similar requires six feet separation.

Salons, barber shops, massage therapy service, and tattoo parlors or body art facilities require six feet of separation and masks to be worn by both the workers and the customers. The exception to this is all services performed on the face, which patrons can remove their mask for but must wear mask any other time.

The Eagle Exchange is asking for clothing The Eagle Exchange is looking for donations of men’s clothes and winter clothes.

Men’s and winter clothes are prioritized, but other donations will be accepted. They do not take clothes that are stained or heavily worn, undergarments, or anything other than clothing.

The Eagle Exchange is an on-campus resource that allows students to freely take second-hand clothing when they need. The Eagle Exchange was established last year and has been used well since it opened.

If you do, attend the bi-weekly meetings of the on-campus group, Familia. This group creates a safe space for Spanish speakers to converse with one another without judgement.

Room in the Student Center, 2 p.m. Monday. Games are played in a mix of Spanish and English, and usually last for an hour. Anyone is invited to join, and COVID-19 guidelines will be implemented.

News Mason sets eyes on Mars, NASA

You mean to tell me there is life on Mars?

More like there was life, and humanoid beings with large heads, but on a micro scale.

Kinsley Mason, 25, of Pensacola, Florida, is a Chadron State College graduate assistant researching just that.

“I am investigating biotic influences on the formation of iron-oxides in rock and their role on Mars” said Mason. “How bacteria can effect formation of minerals inside of rocks and how this shows past life on Mars.”

Knowing that flowing water was once on Mars long ago, about 3.8 billion years ago, is a good indication there was life as well.

“Mars had an accelerated planetary life cycle,” said Mason.

There is no more atmosphere and most of the surface water went away, so any life left behind can still be found.

“The ideal outcome of my research would be bacteria could have lived in past geological settings on Mars, which could show influences on iron-oxide formations in a controlled lab setting,” said Mason.

Other words, iron-rich rocks on Mars could have fossilized bacteria in them.

This is aligned with the Perseverance rover 2020 Mars mission objectives, which Mason hopes her research will contribute to in the search of bio-signatures when the mission gets underway.

In 2019, Mason was awarded the NASA Fellowship Grant, which she used to further her research, which currently includes isolating and identifying iron-oxidizing bacteria from acid mine drainage. The samples used for her reaserch were donated by Jeffrey Kiiskila, assistant professor of mathematics and natural sciences.

Mason hopes to receive her M.S. in Science Education from Chadron State College, and earn a PhD in Astrobiology.

NSCS keeps virus guidelines, retains spring schedule u By Aubrie Lawrence Co-Editor

On Nov. 2, an email was sent out to CSC staff and students on behalf of Nebraska State College System Chancellor Paul Turman thanking them for their efforts in following COVID-19 guidelines and announcing plans for the Spring 2021 semester.

Students will return to in-person classes on January 11, 2021. They will have a five-day midterm break starting March 8, 2021. The semester will end May 7, 2021.

The guidelines that were set in place for the fall semester regarding COVID-19 will remain in place next semester.

“The College leadership teams are confident that the collective efforts of each College during this Fall term to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 will continue to serve the State Colleges during the Spring 2021 term,” Turman said in his letter.

Even with the current spike of COVID-19 cases in Nebraska, as well as on campus, CSC President Randy Rhine does not expect classes scheduled to be in-person next semester to be moved to online only or distant delivery.

“The CSC Covid Team, President’s Cabinet, Chancellor Turman, Deans, PPHD, and others are in close communication about the status of our campus, our community, and the region,” Rhine said. “We constantly monitor our situation.”

Honor veterans with actions, not just words

rowing up I idolized wars and the soldiers who fight them. I regularly came home from the library with VHS tapes about jet fighters, tanks or warships. Yes, I’m that old.

I wasn’t quite seven years old, but I can remember being glued to the television when Operation Desert Storm began. I can recall doing the same in 1993 during the Battle of Mogadishu. I thought war was “cool.”

I watched the events of Sept. 11, 2001 on a television in my high school where I was a senior and closely followed the news as Operation Enduring Freedom, the invasion of Afghanistan began later that year. In addition to remembering 9-11 as the national tragedy it was, it lives on in my mind as the reason my friends soon began going off to war.

Epic music turns study time into journey u By Abigail Swanson Columnist

I listen to music while I study, read, or write countless pages of business concepts. I know people who can not listen to anything but pure silence while engaging in mental activities.

Those who do have a study playlist may listen to music with words or without, to classical composers or modern pieces.

A blog article I recently read inspired me to consider what music I listen to.

Personally, I’m a sucker for a good epic soundtrack, especially while phrasing my views on social media uses for data gathering in a business setting.

Music helps me focus by drowning out distractions in the world around me. My fingers fly faster with a beat in the background.

While I may not want to read my text book about marketing research, at least the background noise makes it sound like I’m in some epic scene.

Some people can focus with singing or talking in the background. I just can’t. I get distracted listening to the words around me rather than the words I’m supposed to be reading or writing.

The same is true of orchestra versions of songs I know.

The president couldn’t do it.

He couldn’t soften his angry frivolous rhetoric for a few months before the election.

As a result, his voters, including me, must live with the consequences of an election he should have won.

No, Joe Biden is not the president America wanted.

He was the president that would not be Donald Trump – that wouldn’t echo Trump’s rhetoric.

Though, make no mistake, Joe Biden is nothing special.

In fact, he is the exact type of

career politician America decided to throw out in 2016 and would have decided to throw out this election as well.

But no.

Trump could not play politics in the few months that mattered most this election cycle.

For example, his incessant focus on voter fraud was completely useless – even if such accusations prove true to some degree. It was counting chickens before they hatched.

Nonetheless, this election was incredibly close, even if the popular vote and the electoral college does not make it seem so.

formed the polls again and won key battleground states by unexpected margins – he should have won most of them.

Though the deck – news media, pandemic, and social media platforms – was

stacked against him.

He once again proved his unorthodox political strategy of fighting any who stand in his way can be effective – to a certain point.

Unfortunately, America saw him breach that point in the first presidential debate with Joe Biden: Acting in the most unpresidential way, the president managed to accomplish absolutely nothing besides angering his opposition and encouraging it to say enough is enough.

Which, on Nov. 3 they did.

Well, not exactly. This election was decided in the months leading up to election night

by the absentee ballots Trump rightly despised.

Like Trump, I wouldn’t want people voting for me in the middle of a public temper tantrum that is amplified by each tweet, nightly news story and the pandemic.

But Trump was ignorant of the fact that so many Americans were being driven to the polls early by their disgust for his flaming rhetoric which only a blue wave could extinguish.

And now, because of Trump, you and I must live with the consequences of reelecting the type of politician America rightfully tossed aside four years ago.

As students, we all get home sick occasionally, and in an age of social media and direct messaging, in a way helps us cope.

But there’s something more intimate about writing a handwritten letter, taking the time to think and craft a thoughtful message through ink and paper.

That is exactly what CSC students participated in during Residence Life Association’s Send a Letter event, Tuesday evening, in The Hub. “I think it’s cool, because people can get lonely” Becca Monahan, 19, Junior of Cheyenne, Wyoming, said about the event. Monahan, along with her friends, all shared the joy from handwriting letters to loved ones back home.

An appreciation is taken from someone who takes a little time out of their day to write a letter. Morgan Ekwall, 18, sophomore of Yoder, Wyoming, said that she is pen pals with her sister and, “both love writing to each other!”

one, like Hope Newman, 19, freshman of Gillette, Wyoming, said this is her first time handwriting a letter and shared her firsttime experience with her father in another state. “It’s easy to send letters” [rather than packages], “and gets to the receiver faster” said Hope.

In contrast to more entertaining events like “Kahoot Night” or artistic events like “Sip N’ Paint”, Send a Letter offerecd a wholesome approach for residents to connect with friends and family back home.

The letters were all handled and shipped

by RLA officials. A total of 30 residents attended the event, and a total of 20 letters were sent by mail, according to Senior Resident Adviser Devin Fulton.

Assisting with the event, Jacob Muir, 22, senior of Driggs, Idaho, is another senior RA who was pleased to see students participate in good ol’ fashioned long-distance communication.

“It was great to see how many people were interested in writing home to loved ones,” Muir said. “It is something that has become increasingly less common, and it’s exciting to see an interest.”

Senior artists display work u By Estabon Bozeman Reporter

Graduating art students are hosting their annual art exhibit in Memorial Hall until Nov. 20 and opens from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday- Friday. The exhibit is put on by senior artists and gives the students a platform to show some of their best creative work.

The show’s title “Euphoric” was thought of by the senior students who were influenced by Empedocles, a fifth century Greek philosopher who believes “that everything on earth is made of four elements, air, water, earth, and fire. He believed that each element was connected in a way that allowed only for transformation, not destruction or creation. He believed this to be so true that he threw himself directly into the volcano Etna, to prove that he would not be destroyed, but transformed into a new entity.”

“This is of course a myth, but we

are connected to our art in this way, by transforming our materials into something unique and new.” CSC senior artists said.

“We are four individuals, each of us with an array of diverse, creative works.

These works represent our time, our accomplishments, our passions, and the euphoric act of throwing ourselves into the volcano.”

Jennifer Boyer, senior of Stapleton, will display items such as a stainedglass panel, wire sculpture, black and white photography, ceramics and graphic design pieces. Boyer said that many of her pieces are influenced by “nature, geometric and organic shapes, and abstract designs.”

The art students defined euphoric as “feeling intense, excitement and happiness” the feelings they get when they create art.

Items on display are graphic design creations, ceramic pieces, creative drawings, self-portraits, and sculptures.

In addition to its usual purpose of celebrating all who serve in the U.S. Military, this Veterans Day also honored the 30th anniversary of the Gulf War. According to the Department of Veterans Affairs, over 695,000 service men and women were deployed during the conflicts known as Operation Desert Storm and Operations Desert Shield. 2.2 million soldiers were in service during the war.

The war began Aug. 2 , 1990 and was fought between an allied coalition of 35 nations led by the United States against Iraq after Iraq invaded and annexed Kuwait.

The war itself was split into two phases. The first phase built-up troops and defenses in Saudi Arabia under the codename of Operation Desert Shield.

Operation Desert Storm was the second phase which was the combat phase. Beginning with aerial and naval combat, the initial combat was to expel Iraqi troops from Kuwait, beginning Jan. 17, 1991, and lasting for five weeks. A ground assault followed Feb. 24.

The allied coalition liberated Kuwait and advanced into Iraqi territory. The coalition ceased its advances and fire 100 hours after starting their ground campaign.

At the eleventh hour on the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918, an armistice was signed between the Allies and the Central Powers. This is seen by some as the official end to World War I instead of the Treaty of Versailles that was signed June 28, 1919.

With the armistice, military action ceased on both sides during the Great War. The following

year, President Wilson proclaimed that Nov. 11, 1919 would be the first day that commemorated the armistice.

It wasn’t until May 12, 1938 that Armistice Day was officially founded to celebrate and to honor World War I veterans.

Following the greatest mobilization of United States soldiers, sailors, Marines and airmen during World War II and the aggressive conflict in Korea, Congress decided to remove the word “Armistice” and replace it with “Veterans.” Upon legislative approval June 1, 1954, Nov. 11 became a day to honor all United States war veterans.

There was another change in a little over a decade with the Uniform Holiday Bill approved on June 28, 1968. This bill is for Federal employees and it is to ensure three-day weekends with the placement of four national holidays on Mondays: Washington’s birthday, Memorial Day, Veterans Day, and Columbus Day. There was great confusion in 1971 on celebrating this new holiday because of many states keeping the holiday on Nov 11 while others moved it to Oct. 25 under the new law.

President Gerald Ford signed a public law Sept. 20, 1975 which moved Veterans Day back to the original date, beginning in 1978.

Veterans day has remained on Nov. 11 since.

Keeping this holiday on its original date preserves the historical significance related to it and the original holiday being Armistice day. It is also to celebrate and honor veterans that have fought in war due to their patriotism, nationalism, willingness to serve, and their sacrifice for the common good.

According the Department of Veterans Affairs, as of 2019 there were 20,333,894 living U.S. Military veterans.

Alumnus and vet, Yetter, leads VFW u By Brandon Davenport Co-Editor

Chadron State College graduate First Sergeant Brandon Yetter, of the Nebraska National Guard’s 1075th Transportation Company didn’t join Chadron’s Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1375 right away, despite multiple tours in Iraq. That changed in 2014, and at 38 years old the former Eagle now serves as the post commander.

The VFW is perhaps best known as an organization of World War II and Vietnam War veterans, but over the last several years the it has begun a transition to serve the needs of younger, “next generation” soldiers, some of which have spent the better part of the last two decades at war. As post commander, Yetter is in a good position to help make that transition possible for veterans in the Chadron area.

Yetter had been eligible to join the VFW for seven years before he finally did. He said a sort of stigma prevented him from joining early, but he has a hard time explaining just what that stigma was.

“There are other vets that will probably agree with me, but I did not feel like I went

through the same stuff that the Vietnam and WWII guys did,” Yetter said. It’s not accurate to say he didn’t feel worthy of joining, he said, but it was something along those lines.

Despite the feeling, Yetter found his way to his first meeting with the group in 2014 shortly after he had returned to live in the Chadron area.

“It was absolutely welcoming,” Yetter said of that first meeting. “We shared some stories of where we served and that stuff and went through what the organization does and what they’re trying to do.”

Yetter said several new members who have joined Post 1375 over the last year have been from the younger generation who he says aren’t interested in just going to meetings. “They want to do something,” he said. “They want to be part of something and do something with their own two hands.”

Part of that, he says, is raising money to help with Honor Flights (trips that connect veterans of all ages with war memorials in Washington D.C.) and scholarships, and part is giving veterans the chance to build something and share time together. To share good experiences as well as bad ones.

“They worked with me the semester before I left in ’06 and when I knew that I was going to be deployed again to help me get into those courses that weren’t going to be offered, or subbing it with a course that was acceptable to the degree,” Yetter said. “It could have taken a semester or two longer if they hadn’t worked with me. They were fantastic.”

Yetter graduated from CSC’s Rangeland program in December of 2008. A month later, he was headed back to Iraq, this time to Camp Victory in Baghdad where he and his unit performed convoy escort while attached to Task Force Stetson of the 41st Infantry Brigade Combat Team out of Oregon.

Since that deployment, Yetter has stayed stateside and in 2013 he moved back to Chadron. He served for a handful of years as a platoon sergeant with the 1057th Military Police Company, in Chadron before taking the position as the top enlisted soldier in the 1075th, the unit that had previously been the 1074th.

“That’s the unit I joined as Private Yetter,” he said. “Now I’m the First Sergeant. It was a feather in my cap, I was incredibly honored to come back.”

For Yetter, the military was something he needed - a chance to mature – and after nearly 20 years in, Yetter

isn’t ready to call it a career yet, although he’s nearing retirement.

“I grew up in a strict household and when I got out of high school I just wanted to play,” he said. “The military helped me with discipline – even though I wanted to do other stuff in college, I always buckled down and got my school stuff done first and then went and played.”

The military also offered Yetter the chance to experience other cultures.

“I grew up in a (Lisko) a town of 100 people and I didn’t even really grow up in that town – I lived 16 miles out of town – so I was a pretty uncultured person, I didn’t know a lot about the world,” he said.

Between the military itself which he says is a melting pot of every culture, and the traveling he did while he served, Yetter became much more educated about the world.

“I know this year’s been about as tough a year as many can remember between it being an election year, having COVID, and especially in this area where the ag markets are tough,” Yetter said. “As tough as it is, I’ve seen tougher. I’ve seen people endure a lot worse conditions than we are in and I still believe we’re in the greatest country in the world. I truly and honestly believe that.”

Theatre to show original play Viewers will follow the live play through four rooms u By Kaitlyn Yuen Reporter

Chadron State Theatre has been working hard on their latest play titled “WHAT’S NEXT?”.

Jennifer Poarch, theatre interim director of theatrical performances, said this play was written for, and is original to, CSC and has been in the works since June.

Poarch said that “WHAT’S NEXT?” revolves around college freshman characters who try to find their way through life changes and decision-making. She said that characters experience changing circumstances and life-learning experiences.

Poarch said that audiences will follow the main character, Arthur, through some college experiences.

She said that some discussions in the play will revolve around complex topics like gun control, bully-

ing, and relationships.

Audiences will be limited to 10 people per room and will cycle through each of the four rooms that serve as stages. The four stages will be set in the Ballroom, the Scottsbluff room, the Bordeaux room and the Ponderosa room in the Student Center.

Students have been rehearsing for four weeks, dedicating around 12-15 hours per week. Students come from a variety of majors with nine fields of study being represented.

Trinity Dietrich, 19, freshman of Spearfish, South Dakota, is a stage manager for the play. Dietrich says that her job involves managing timing, running scenes, providing lines during rehearsals, keeping notes, and helping communication run smoothly.

“I’m excited for audiences to see the show because all of the actors have put in such hard work,” She said. “I’m ready for it to pay

off.”

Josie Fritz, 18, freshman of Spearfish, is an actor in the play.

She said she spent hours preparing scenes, running her lines in between classes and working with her fellow actors. “I’m really excited because this will really be my first time on stage in college,” she said.

Zak Wellnitz, 19, sophomore of Rushville, is one of the lead roles as Arthur. He said that his role involved rehearsing his lines and observing his other lead counterparts. He said, “I think it will be a lot of fun. Everyone has put in such hard work.”

Olivia Freeze, 19, freshman of Bridgeport, is acting in this play.

She said she had to play ping-pong to practice for a scene in addition to practicing her role. “I’m excited that we are the original cast for this show,” She said. “This show has never been performed anywhere until now.”

The hunting industry in Nebraska has been growing since the first official deer season in 1945, where 277 deer were harvested.

For the 2020 deer season 11,000 mule deer tags and 50,000 white tail tags are being sold.

The Nebraska hunting tourism industry brings in an average of $848 million every year according to Nebraska Game and Parks.

The Chadron community receives hunters from all over the country for annual turkey hunts and deer hunts.

COVID-19 restrictions in spring 2020 stopped out of state hunters from purchasing spring turkey tags, causing losses for outfitting companies. COVID-19 has continued to effect the industry with hunters not wanting to travel.

Located west of Chadron Ash Creek Outfitters offers whitetail deer, mule deer, pheasant, grouse, waterfowl, varmints, and Merriam turkey hunts for people from out of state. Turkey and deer hunts being the most popular.

The cost of a 3 day hunt for two turkeys at Ash Creek Outfitters is $1,575. A 4 day rifle mule deer hunt costs $3,250 and a 4 day rifle whitetail deer hunt costs $2,950.

COVID-19 concerns led to Nebraska stopping the sale of spring turkey permits, one of the most economically successful

seasons for Nebraska.

In the spring season for 2019 49.9% of turkey permits were filled by non-resident hunters. 13,373 permits were purchased by nonresidents and 14,961 permits were purchased by residents according to Nebraska Game and Parks.

Ash Creek Outfitters has seen the effect of the loss of hunters for their business. Boone Huffman, who runs Ash Creek Outfitters, estimated that they lost more than $50,000 since the pandemic hit the U.S. in spring 2020.

“We lost $35,000 in spring turkey hunts and then another $20,000 this fall,” Huffmen said. “We have had some hunts but not as many as we have had in past fall seasons. We lost quite a bit in that spring turkey season.”

Despite most travel restrictions being lifted for fall, Huffman has still seen losses from out of state hunters that have come for years.

“People don’t want to come because they don’t want to risk it,” Huffmen said. “People from places like Alabama and Arkansas don’t want to come because they are worried about having to go into quarantine when they go home and they are worried about the virus.”

Turkey hunting in the Chadron area is a popular activity for people from out of state. Nebraska makes money off of turkey permits and habitat stamps.

Fall or spring turkey permits cost $30 for residents and $109 for nonresidents tags, each hunter must also purchase a

$25 habitat stamp.

Outfitting companies are not the only businesses that have been affected by the loss of hunters. Hunters use local grocery stores, fast food, campgrounds, motels and sporting good stores when they come into an area.

“That is 50,0000 that is not going back into the Chadron community that normally would,” Huffman said. “It’s not even just our direct business that is being affected it’s grocery stores and campgrounds too. Hunters use the community when they come to hunt with us and losing that isn’t just an issue for us.”

Ace Hardware is one Chadron business that has lost money with the loss of the spring hunting season.

“We lost a lot of sales in the spring,” Ken Keller, general manager at Chadron Ace Hardware, said, “We literally lost thousands of dollars with the canceled season.”

With fall deer season starting on Nov. 14, Ace Hardware has begun preparing for there to be less hunters.

“I am anticipating some loss,” Keller said, “They sold less tags this season, so we have to be prepared for the fact that we will lose some.”

Despite the changes that are occurring, Huffmen said he believes that things are getting better and will get back to where they once were.

“Things will go back to the way they were, I think,” Huffmen said. “We want this to get better and I think things will heal overtime.”

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission and the Bird Conservatory of the Rockies have partnered to host the annual bird banding station. The stations have been running for over a decade.

Bird banding is done to collect and track information on individual birds.

Banded birds are then caught and tracked over their lifetime. Information from the individuals is then taken and used to calculate migratory routes, migratory seasons and average lifespan information.

The bird banding for 2020 is taking place on Nov. 12 at 7 p.m. at the Wildcat Hills State Recreation Area

and Chadron State Park.

Due to COVID-19 concerns the bird banding has moved to an online webinar. The webinar is being hosted by Wachiska Audubon Society.

The bird banding team banded 190 birds last year and 1,000 birds this season, the informational webinar will follow the team’s movements.

The webinar will be led by Delanie Bruce and Colin Woolley. Bruce is the Nebraska wildlife education coordinator for Nebraska Game and Parks Commission and the Bird Conservatory of the Rockies. Woolley is the banding coordinator for the Bird Conservatory of the Rockies.

The webinar is free and anyone can register on the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission Website.

Free entry to outdoor areas for Veterans u By Kamryn Kozisek Ag and Range Editor

Both the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission and United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service are offering free entry to recreational areas for veterans.

Starting on Nov. 16 disabled veterans will be able to apply to receive a Nebraska Resident Disabled Veteran Vehicle Park Entry Permit.

Veterans that were discharged or separated honorably or generally or that have been deemed 50% or more disabled as a result of military service can apply for the permit.

Permit applications are available on th Nebraska Game

and Parks Commission website.

As of Nov. 11, USDA Forest Service is offering free entry to national forests and grasslands for U.S. military veterans and all Gold Star families.

All day-use recreation amenities will be free to access by those meeting the Gold Star family and veteran standards, including trailheads, picnic centers and visitor centers.

“Without those brave men and women that served our country and uniform, and without the support of their families, our nation would not be what it is today.” Said the USDA Forest Service on Nov. 10, “To show our gratitude for their selfless service, the USDA Forest Service today announced it will offer U.S. military vets and Gold Star families free access to their national forests and grasslands.”

Over the last 250 years Nebraska’s wetlands have been destroyed, leaving only 65% of wetlands remaining intact.

Based on 2019 statistics, 100% of Nebraska’s amphibian species, 50% of Nebraskan bird species, 38% of Nebraskan reptiles and 36% of Nebraskan mammals rely on wetland habitats according to Nebraska Game and Parks Commission.

Beginning in 2015 the Wetland Program Plan for Nebraska began with the goal to improve wetlands and provide education.

The plan is updated every 4 years. The 2019 plan was released in the fall outlining actions to be taken during 2019-2023 for wetland conservation.

Wetland conservation has been a growing over the last 25 years, last fall a grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) gave $280,000 to the Wetlands of Nebraska Outreach and Education Project.

This project is being led by Nebraska Game and Parks Commission and should be completed by 2022. Matching grants will be provided by Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, University of Nebraska- Lincoln and Duck’s Unlimited.

This 3 year project is based on

educating the public and students about wetland resources.

A fifth grade curriculum and activity book is being introduced using the grant, this is to be implemented across the state.

The grant is also being used to produce an updated copy of “Guide to Nebraska Wetlands and their conservation needs”.

This guide discussed in detail about 14 wetland complexes and wetland plant and animal species.

This guide is free and can be ordered online.

Other multimedia project funded by the grants include a Platte Basin time-lapse short films and a Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI) online story map.

The project is also supporting continued updates on the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission wetland webpage.

There will also be added use of social media for wetland education and the production of a wetland education app.

For youth education, the production of educational videos and leading field trips to areas for hands on education are being funded.

The project will also fund professional presentations at school districts.

All educational actions done using the Wetlands of Nebraska Outreach and Education Project will continue through 2023.

Sports Winter sports prepare for new-look season Wrestling and basketball teams to begin seasons as planned u By Devin Fulton Sports Editor

Chadron State College’s winter sports are all scheduled for competition before the fall semester concludes, but the teams will see different procedures and schedules applied for safety precautions.

The Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference is allowing teams to wrestle before the semester ends while most other conferences in the nation are waiting until Jan. 1 to begin competition.

Eagle wrestlers are scheduled to host Western Colorado Dec. 5 and travel to Kearney Dec. 11. Head Wrestling Coach Brett Hunter said the team is in constant contact with Western and Kearney to ensure all parties are able to compete in a safe manner.

The National Collegiate Athletic Association is prohibiting tournaments as teams are only allowed to dual meets.

Wrestlers are expected to wear facemasks during each dual, but

not on the mat. With COVID-19 guidelines, teams will wrestle on at least two mats and extra time may be added for cleaning between matches, according to Hunter.

If the December meets are canceled, CSC wrestlers will continue practicing as the team hopes to host its annual Black and Cardinal Classic in Chadron.

Though the semester ends Nov. 25, wrestlers will remain in Chadron until Dec. 18 before receiving a 10-day break.

Because of the sport’s up-close nature, Hunter said wrestlers everywhere face a tough challenge with mitigating spread of COVID-19.

Meanwhile, both men’s and women’s basketball teams at CSC have competition scheduled within two weeks as the Eagles host Colorado School of Mines Nov. 22 and Regis University Nov. 23.

Following women’s basketball games, extra time for cleaning and sanitizing will be added before the men’s 20-minute warmup session.

In conjunction with social dis-

tancing, the RMAC mandated that players and coaches away from the court wear facemasks. Basketball players and coaches will not shake hands with opponents after games or have a captain’s meeting prior to competition.

Along with wrestling, CSC’s basketball coaches must adhere to guidelines set by the RMAC, NCAA and the state’s public health district.

Depending on state policies in places like Colorado or Nebraska, basketball games may feature players wearing masks while playing on the court.

“I just want the kids to be able to play with their friends and family watching in the stands,” Head Women’s Basketball Coach Janet Raymer said.

CSC’s basketball teams will take their mandatory seven-day break beginning Dec. 20.

Similar to wrestling, Chadron State’s basektball teams are only scheduled to play conference opponents this season.
