Former CAB Chair of Finance Caleb Tegtmeier, selected by Gov. Pete Ricketts to serve as CSC’s student trustee, is awaiting civil court decisions on two sexual assault protection orders,

court records show.

No criminal charges related to the two cases have been filed against Tegtmeier, 20, a sophomore of North Platte.

Alex Reuss, the governor’s director of strategic communications, confirmed in an email Wednesday that Tegtmeier was appointed student trustee in January.

The appointment came weeks before two sexual assault protection order motions were filed against him - one on Feb. 10, the second on Feb. 15 - by two different female students.

“The certificates were dated January 2022,” Reuss wrote in a Wednesday email. “The Governor makes his selection for the student trustees based on what the Colleges put forward to him.

This information was not disclosed and the Governor was not aware of this information.”

The college’s deadline for student trustee applications was Oct. 24, 2021, the selection process concluded with the governor’s January appointment.

On Friday, Judge Russell W. Harford heard testimony from a female student who filed the Feb.15 motion, and from Tegtmeier. At the conclusion of the hearing, Harford said he would take the case under advisement and render a decision on May 23.

Friday’s hearing was the second of the two sexual assault protection order motions filed in February against Tegtmeier.

A hearing on the Feb. 10 motion was March 14. A decision on that motion is still pending.

In an affidavit seeking the protection order, the female student who filed the Feb. 15 motion described a non-consensual encounter that occurred in September 2020.

“I told Caleb I did not want to be touched below the waist,” she wrote.

On Friday, she testified about the effects of the encounter.

“I find it hard to go through my day-to-day life knowing what happened to me and potentially others,” the female student testified Friday.

During her testimony, she said that she contacted CSC’s Title IX office in November 2020 about the al-

leged sexual assault.

Afterward, Ted Tewahade, former Title IX coordinator, and Megan Northrup, current Title IX coordinator, had “a conversation about consent” with Tegtmeier, the female student testified. She also testified she was offered “supportive measures,” such as counseling and academic resources.

During her testimony, the student said that Tegtmeier’s presence makes her “very uncomfortable.”

“At the time I thought I could push through it, but I was sorely wrong,” she testified.

She also testified that in February, Northrup reached out to her again, and afterward filed a no contact order against Tegtmeier.

Tegtmeier testified after receiving the no contact order he began attending classes he shared with the female student via Zoom, resigned from his position with CAB and has been attending Health Professions Club (HPC) meetings virtually.

Student Senate swears in new senator at large and secretary  By Aubrie Lawrence Editor-in-Chief

During its weekly Monday meeting, Student Senate voted to approve a new senator-at-large and a new secretary.

Sawyer Haag, freshman of Chadron, was unanimously approved by the Senate to be a new senator at large.

“I’d like to be on Student Senate because it sounds fun and I’d like to be more involved in campus decisions and stuff,” he said during the meeting.

The trigger bill deserved to be shot down

L

ast week, “trigger bill” LB933, an abortion law, failed to overcome a filibuster in the Nebraska State Senate.

This bill, which is similar to the 500 abortion bans that have been set in place by 41 states in the past three months the Guttmacher Institute reports, would ban abortions entirely in Nebraska if the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. To pass, it needed 33 votes, but it only received 31.

With no days left in Nebraska’s legislative session, there is no clear path for this bill to become a law this year.

Apparently, though, both sides of the abortion debate saw this as a huge win.

Andi Curry Grubb, the state director of Planned Parenthood of Nebraska, said in Nebraska Public Media article published April 7, that this showed the changing

views of Nebraska voters.

However, in that same article, Nate Gratz, who is with the Nebraska Family Alliance, said the vote shows the positive steps the pro-life movement is taking because the vote was so close.

In a poll done in March

by Impact Research, it was found that 55% of respondents opposed LB933 while 40% supported it.

In a largely red state, those numbers are surprising. I naturally would’ve assumed that they would’ve been flipped (and trust me, I did double-check to make sure I read the report right).

I know that the discussion on abortion has been one that has been brought up time and time again in the media, and even our own opinion pages here at The Eagle by myself and other editors. I’ve even briefly mentioned this bill before in a previous article.

Unless you live under a rock you have probably heard a lot about Title IX and sexual assault on campus recently. Sexual assault is bad and this situation sucks. Obviously, right?

Well, apparently it’s not obvious.

All over campus I’ve heard all sorts of opinions about sexual assault on campus. People are allowed to have their own opinions. I’m not mad about people having their own thoughts. I appreciate people who are able to have a conversation without just repeating what someone else said to them.

I just didn’t know there were so many ways to view sexual assault other than it’s bad and it shouldn’t happen.

Boy was I naive.

I’ve heard people saying the story printed in The Eagle was wrong.

Man, I wish I could just brush stuff off like that and assume it was wrong. The man in the story was literally convicted, and people are saying that he didn’t do anything. I think being convicted says quite the opposite. But that’s just me, what do I know. (Besides the dictionary meaning of convicted.)

Then I’ve heard opinions that basically say well maybe they were lying let’s not jump to conclusions.

Which is fair. I don’t think jumping to conclusions is a good idea and it can be very damaging.

So, let’s look at what the statistics tell us. The percent of rape accusations that are false are two to eight percent, which is actually the same percentage for other felonies according to ourresilience.org. Then of course there’s this horrifying fact:

Puff puff pass. Most people know this rule nowadays. If you don’t, well it is marijuana.

Marijuana or weed is a big subject lately with people asking is it good or bad for us. It is not as simple as good or bad. It’s both.

To answer this question, we need to look at all the ways there is to consume marijuana.

There are so many ways such as smoking, vaping, or taking it as edibles. It is shown that just like tobacco products you should not smoke weed.

Inhaling any smoke into the lungs is bad for them. This can

cause lung problems, and COPD. There are negative effects to all the types of consuming weed.

Such as vaping. Most people think vaping it is healthier since it is not smoke, but a water based vape.

They are sort of accurate.

Again, inhaling it into the lungs is bad. Scientists recommend if you are going to blaze up then to do it through a water bong and maybe add some ice to it.

This is because the water acts as a filter and takes out some of the toxins you find when smoking. The ice or cold water also cools down the smoke that is entering the lungs. Sadly, to say the vapes that are filled with weed juice can not be said if they are positive or negative because not

enough research has been done.

Most scientists say edibles are the way. This this because it is not inhaling anything into the lungs, but they can be just as harmful.

Most people don’t know how much to take. So they guess and

when they don’t feel high enough right away they take more.

Edibles can take anywhere from 30 mins to two hours. If you take too much you cross into the negative side effects like paranoia.

Most people worry that marijuana is a gateway drug. Scientists have proven it is not.

They started using it to get people off harder drugs and to control opioid use. They use marijuana because it is a controlled high, so it helps them get off the harder drugs.

Don’t think that people using it to control chronic pain and PTSD is all good though because some people react negatively to it.

Such as getting tired, anxious, or unmotivated. People with these chronic issues may feel they need

weed.

Although there is a lot of negatives there is also positives.

Such as most science has showed it slows the growth of cancer. It helps with epilepsy, depression, eating disorders and so much more. They are using weed to help with chronic pain, Chron’s and sleeping disorders.

It also helps with many mood disorders. Even though it helps with all these things scientists still recommend no one under 21 use it. It can give negative side effects to a developing brain.

So, the question is not if it is bad, it is why do people think it is bad. The common answer is because just like anything else too much is bad. If used correctly it is more helpful than harmful.

Bridging the gap

The Big Event celebrates its 10th year of serving the community Story by Kamryn Kozisek, Staff Editor Reporting by Aubrie Lawrence, Editor-in-Chief Over 400 volunteers gathered Saturday for the 10th annual Big Event. There were 47 job sites around Chadron that were visited by volunteers.

The Big Event was started by Shaunda French-Collins, communication associate professor and Big Event advisor.

“Ten years is huge,” Kincaid Stain, 22, senior of Elk River, Minnesota said. “Dr. French - Collins has worked so hard getting The Big Event started, and for it to now be ten years and still going strong is a huge accomplishment. Another huge accomplishment of this ten-year anniversary was April being declared The Big Event month by Mayor Werner. The Big Event, hence, the name, is a huge event that is well known around town for connecting the community and the college, so to recognize this event and the work that goes into it is so exciting.”

Volunteer work included planting trees near Briggs Ponds,

yard clean up, helping at Friends of Pets and writing letters to first responders and veterans.

“I think it’s important for students to volunteer because our community is such a big support of all college activities, “ Katelyn Bach, 20, sophomore of Burns, Wyoming said. “The Big Event is a great opportunity for our college to give back to the community.”

Volunteers included faculty, staff, CSC and high school students and other members of the community that wanted to give back.

“It was so exciting and heartwarming to see so many people who were wanting to go out and give back to our giving community,” Strain said. “This number really reflects on our college and community dynamic, and how much we appreciate the support coming from both ends.”

NPS hosts events for National Park Week u By Kamryn Kozisek Ag and Range Editor

This year National Park Week will take place April 16-24. National parks and monuments across the U.S. will be celebrating with events and a fee free day April 16.

Wind Cave National Park will be hosting free tours through the caves on April 16.

According National Park Service (NPS), visitors can see a rare calcite formation known as boxwork, during the tours.

One 90 minute tour with 450 steps from

9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Garden of Eden Tour is an hour long 150 step tour which will run from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Reservations are required at least three days prior on www.recreation.gov.

On April 16, park visitors can build bluebird boxes from 9-11 a.m. There is a one box per group limit and visitors will need to bring their own hammer. Reservations can be made at (605)-745-7020 to make a reservation.

Josh Sebree, associate professor at University of Northern Iowa will be giving a speech on the Wind Cave Park Facebook page. Sebree will be speaking on low energy

environment that is found in the caves and is like environments found on other planets.

The week will kick off, nationwide with Park Prescription Day on April 16. This is a day meant to encourage people to get outside to help boost moods and overall health, according to the NPS. The week also falls into Volunteer Week which beings on April 17. Volunteer information can be found on https://www.volunteer.gov/s/.

On April 20 at 1 p.m. Eastern Standard Time, a virtual career program will be featured titled ‘Our Park Career Path: Corps members on Their Growth as Park Stew-

ards’, meant for young people interested in careers. The program will feature 10 NPS professionals and will be available on the NPS Facebook.

National Park Week was created by the National Park Foundation (NPF) along with the NPS in 1991 to celebrate the over 400 national parks and monuments in the U.S. and its territories.

The NPF is considered to be the fundraising group for national parks and helps to support projects in many parks.

American the Beautiful annual passes to national parks can be purchased for $80 on the USGS website.

Kinsey Smith, 21, junior of Windsor, Colorado, or “Kevin” to her close friends and teammates has a strong presence across campus, partaking in two athletic programs at CSC and being executive members of two clubs on campus.

“Golf came into my life when I was like 10 years old,” Smith said. “I’ve always been around it, but I’ve never wanted to play it until we moved to a golf

course community, and they had a bunch of kids camps. So, I decided that I wanted to try it out and it was super fun.”

It wasn’t until high school when she got serious about golf. While in high school, she was a two-time team state champion and finished seventh in backto-back state tournaments.

Two CSC cowboys rope in different places of the team roping, being the only Eagles to make it to the short go-round during the Ropin’ & Riggin’ Days Rodeo hosted by Casper College, Wyoming.

Tanner McInerney, senior of Alzada, Montana, as the heeler, and Casper College’s Nevada Berquist, junior of Watford City, North Dakota, as header finished second after the first go-round, timed at 5.9 seconds.

cond final run and averaged 26. 5 seconds.

The other pair was Jake Chasek, and Eastern Wyoming College’s Justin Chasek, both freshmen of Mitchell. They ended their first go eighth at 9.4 seconds.

They remained in eighth when they were unable to rope in their steer, averaging 109.4 seconds.

Chadron State’s rodeo team has a break in its schedule this weekend, but competes at the University of Wyoming April 22-24 in Laramie for its last rodeo before nationals hosted by the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association in Casper, Wyoming.

With strong performances all around, Chadron State College came away with 11 wins during Bauer Open hosted by South Dakota School of Mines, Saturday, five for the women and six for the men.

In the 400 meter, Caydince Groth, freshman of Cheyenne, Wyoming, took first at 1:01.74, followed close behind by Michaela Hill, sophomore of Eaton, Colorado, in third at 1:05.07.

“I felt pretty good going into the meet, after experiencing the wind when running the 4x100,” Groth said. “I was nervous to run that open 400 but was very happy with the results even with the bad conditions.”

Another first place and third place combo for the women was Danae Rader, freshman of Hansen, and Hannah Christie, freshman of Alpine, Wyoming, in the 100-meter hurdles. Rader took first with a time of 15.61 seconds and Christie took third at 17.91 seconds.

Groth, and Hill, along with Carlie Collier, sophomore of Dunning, and Shantae Morgan, freshman of Little London, Jamaica, competed together in the 4x100 relay and finished at 48.95 seconds to take first.

Collier and Morgan also competed individually in the 100 meter to finish second at 12.13 seconds and third at 12.64 seconds respectively.

Alissa Wieman, freshman of Box Elder, South Dakota, took the gold in the 1500 at 5:03.81, while Sydney Settles, sophomore of Lincoln, took third in the 5000 at 20:37.08.

The Eagles were able to take the high jump as well with Jourdaine Cerenil, freshman of Pine Bluffs, Wyoming, taking first, and Hunter Wiebelhaus, freshman of Springview, finished seconds, both at 5 feet, 3 inches (1.6 meters).

“I was really happy to see some of my teammates getting up there with some of the others in their events,” Groth said.

“Seeing Michaela Hill up there in the 400, Hunter Weilbelhaus up there in the high jump, watching Danae Rader win the 100 hurdles, and all the men being really close in the 100 even though they didn’t get their

times recorded made it a pretty good meet.”

The men throwers excelled again with Dan Reynolds, freshman of Granby, Colorado, and Shane Collins, sophomore of Bison, South Dakota, both having a first and second place finishes.

Reynolds won the shot put with a throw of 48 feet, 5.25 inches (14.76 meters), and finished second in the hammer throw at 191 feet, 1.75 inches (58.26 meters).

Collins finished above Reynolds in the hammer throw for first at 195 feet, 2.25 inches (59.49 meters) and took second in the discus at 149 feet, 9.75 inches (45.66 meters).

Parker Gonser, freshman of Windsor, Colorado, also found success in the throws, finishing second in the shot put at 47 feet, 6.5 inches (14.49 meters) and third in the discus, throwing 147 feet, 8.5 inches (45.02 meters).

In the javelin, Quest Savery, freshman of Miles City, Montana, threw 191 feet, 3 inches (58.29 meters), taking another first for the Eagles.

Chadron State jumpers took the top three places in the triple jump.

Derrick Nwagwu, sophomore of Aurora, Colorado, finished first with a mark of 49 feet, 2.5 inches (14.99 meters); Brock Voth, junior of Berthoud, Colorado, jumped 47 feet, 8 inches (14.53 meters) to finished second; and Joss Linse, junior of Plattsmouth, took third place at 44 feet, 8.5 inches (13.63 meters).

In the high jump, Joe Dumsa, junior of Sandy Utah, and Hector Ortega, redshirt freshman of Northglenn, Colorado, cleared the bar at 6 feet, 4.75 inches (1.95 meters).

Dumsa finished first while Ortega took second.

Ishmael DePaullite, redshirt sophomore of Pine Bluffs, Wyoming, rounded out the jumps for CSC men by taking second in the long jump at 21 feet, 6 inches (6.55 meters).

Osiel Cano, sophomore of Oshkosh, also finished the weekend with a first place in the 400-meter hurdles at 56.75 seconds.

Greg Logsdon, freshman of Torrington, Wyoming, took second in the 400 meters at 50.39 seconds and Zach Purviance, freshman of Newcastle, Wyoming, finished the 800 meters at 2:09.52 to place third.

Chadron State track and field team travels to Kearney for the Loper Invitational, Friday hosted by the University of Nebraska-Kearney.

Her interest in the sport continued with her to college when she joined the women’s golf team at Chadron State College and reached her own successes.

“I think it’s affected my life positively in many ways because it has given me mental toughness and taught me how to be positive in all sorts of situations, whether it’s on the golf course or off,” she said.

Along with positivity and mental toughness, Smith has finished her 2019-20 season with a season best in eighth during the Winona State Invite in Las Vegas, and in 2020-21 she tied for 41st at the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships in Litchfield Park, Arizona.

“It was always super fun and I have always treated it as something that I want to keep as something fun in my life, not ever work or a burden or anything like that. I think that’s been important.”

But this season, she was able to win a golf tournament, the Warrior Invitational, March 7-8, two days after she wrestled in Nationals.

Smith said that her interest in wrestling sprung up through yearbook assignments in high school and after the first time she “just fell in love

with just watching it.”

“It was so cool to me,” she said. “I always thought, ‘you know, this is something I would’ve been interested in if I had the opportunity when I was younger to join like a girl’s wrestling team or something like that.’”

A year after she graduated high school, women’s wrestling was added to the school district and Smith thought at first she had missed her chance. Little did she know, a few years later, CSC announced the addition of their own women’s wrestling program, giving her the opportunity that she always wanted.

She was able to wrestle on a team of eight members in the 101-pound weight class and she was one of the four Eagles to book herself a ticket to the NCWWC National Championships, making history as a member of the program’s first year.

On top of being a two-sport athlete in college, Smith has taken on the responsibility of being the marketing coordinator of The Big Event and a co-advertising director for The Eagle.

Being the marketing coordinator for The Big Event, she handled social media, helped plan different promotional events and made different promotional items like posters and lanyards,

helped design t-shirts, talked to people to coordinate things, and visited job sites with other staff members to make sure each location was safe.

She made history once again by being a staff member during the 10-year anniversary of The Big Event.

“I was super happy with how The Big Event went this year,” Smith said. “I think it went pretty smoothly. We had a lot of first year staff members on our staff this year, and they just did a great job. So, it was super cool to see how they picked things up really quickly.”

With meetings once a week since the beginning of the school year, sometimes more, there weren’t many hiccups since the planning put into the event this year seemed to pay off.

With The Eagle, she has been able to put her business major into use before even leaving college when Mr. Kennedy, The Eagle’s faculty adviser, extended the offer her freshman year then to her friend Andrew Avila, 21, junior of Henry, the next year, and the two took on the role of advertising director together.

“I’ve learned to make sales for ads and that’s been great. I’ve also learned how to create actual ads, so using InDesign is something that I

feel like I’m going to be able to do for the rest of my life. It’s just been a great experience to be in the newsroom but not on like the journalist side. Like, I get to be on the outside looking in but then also a part of it, so, I like that.”

With everything she’s in, Smith also usually takes on a 15-credit class load most semesters, but she has experienced some burnout with her busy schedule. To handle that burnout, she has a strategy of reminding herself why she likes each thing she does, time management and asks friends for help when needed.

“If it’s something that I’m not having fun with anymore, then I’m not going to do it obviously,” She said. “But I love all of these things so I’m gonna keep going and I just remind myself why I started. I’m able to stay focused on a task for a while and then like switch to another one and focus on that. If I’m not focused anymore, I let myself take breaks and I think that’s super important too.

“I have balance. It’s not all work all the time.

I do fun things as well. Then I’ve learned also to ask for help if I need it. So, I have a lot of people supporting me and they can take some of the burdens away as well.”

Eagles battle to two losses; two games canceled u By Mackenzie Dahlberg Sports Editor

With a battle against weather and field conditions that canceled the games on Sunday, Chadron State College softball team was only able to play two games against Adams State University, Saturday, and took a hard fall for both of them.

The first game saw inning rallies from the Eagles, pushing the game to 10 innings but Adams State University emerged as the winner, 13-11.

“I’m happy to see that we’re finally having fun and working hard to win games,” Gabby Russell, senior of Oceanside, California, said. “Regardless of going 10 innings we were there to work, and I could see it in every single one of us.”

Aliyah Rothstein, freshman of Lakewood, Colorado, earned the first run for the Eagles,

scoring on a wild pitch in the first inning.

The third inning saw three runs for the Eagles.

Paige Propp, sophomore of Lakewood, Colorado; Lauren Zimmerman, freshman of Reno, Nevada; and Amaya Ruiz, freshman of Highlands Ranch, Colorado, all singled to different locations to advance runners and each earned an RBI. Propp, Sloane Quijas, sophomore of Erie, Colorado, and Ramsey Deming, freshman of Rapid City, South Dakota, were the three base runners that were able to make it home.

The fourth inning saw two more runs while the fifth inning had three runs from the Eagles.

In the fourth, Zimmerman earned another RBI with a single up the middle to advance the base runners and bring Jessica Strandlund, junior of Victoria, British Columbia, home. Jessie Henchenski, sophomore of Fort Collins, Colorado, batted a sacrifice fly in order for Quijas to score.

The fifth saw a double from Samantha Conradie, sophomore of Thornton, Colorado, a double from Quijas and a third single from Zimmerman.

With a double to center field from Zimmerman, J’Lyssa Martinez was brought home to tie the score at the bottom of the seventh inning.

Even with a homer in the 10th inning from Propp, the Eagles were unable to keep up with the Grizzlies and took the loss by two runs.

Russell stepped up to the mound in the second inning to finish out the game. Russell had 11 hits, and eight runs, but was able to earn five strikeouts of 39 batters faced.

“I was ready and had a lot of fight,” Russell said. “I trusted the girls playing behind me and knew that they would make the plays when they needed to.”

After the close fought game, CSC softball team struggled with their bats in the second game, only

scoring three runs to the Grizzlies’ eight.

The only runs for the Eagles came in the fourth inning from two home runs. Mackenzi Kroll, sophomore of Brighton, Colorado, knocked one over the center field fence for herself and Ruiz to score, and Chloe Brown, junior of Riverside, California, clocked one to left field, bringing herself home.

Despite the strong show on Saturday, the Eagles were unable to return to the field Sunday to play their other two games against Adams State due to unsafe field conditions following rain.

“I was upset the games got canceled,” Russell said. “I woke up that morning ready to win and I knew the team as a whole was ready to play and have some fun.”

CSC softball team plays Thursday and Friday against Black Hills State University in Chadron, with the first game starting at noon, Thursday.
