er, 44, of Scottsbluff. At least another 1,011 others viewed the service via livestream.

The Bruners, and family friend Sydnee Brester, 19, of Gering, died Sunday, Nov. 21, when the small plane they were traveling in crashed in a hilly pasture shortly after take off from Chadron Municipal Airport, Dawes County Attorney Vance Haug stated in a Nov. 22 news release.

Matthew Bruner graduated from CSC in 2000 with a Bachelor of Science degree. He went on to medical school at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha.

In 2009, he became an obstetrician and gynecologist at Regional West Medical Center’s Women’s Center in Scottsbluff. He became the Chief Medical Officer in 2019.

“My dad is the strongest man I will ever know,” James said. “He would sacrifice himself any day of the week and so would I.” Brester was attending WNCC in Scottsbluff pursuing a degree in human services with the goal of being a victim’s advocate. She received a vocal scholarship and was an active member of the choir.

“Maybe I’ll become the strongest I’ll ever be after this is all over, but it will only be with the strength of these three individuals,” James said.

CSC and Chadron Public Schools was on lockout for about 40 minutes yesterday due to a high-speed chase that made its way into Chadron.

The Chadron Police were notified around 2 p.m. that two suspects, and man and a woman, wanted for a Pine Ridge shooting Sunday were on their way into Chadron, News Channel Nebraska reported Tuesday.

The suspects abandoned their vehicle in the 200 blocks of Cedar and were arrested soon after.

Meet your Student Senators Senator of Liberal Arts Sullivan Jones urges students to voice their opinions regarding Student Senate Sullivan Jones, 21, junior of Papillion.

What Student Senate committees are you a part of?

“Diversity and Bylaw Revision.”

Do you have any previous experience in Student Senate?

If so, what was it?

“I spent my first four semesters at CSC observing Student Senate as a concerned student-citizen before first joining in Spring 2021.”

Why did you decide to become a Senator?

“I became a senator following my Student Senate presidential campaign in Spring 2021 because the students who voted for me deserve to have their voice heard.”

What would you like to accomplish during your term?

“I want to hold student government accountable for its decisions made on behalf of the students. By pushing Student Senate to do right, I hope to ensure student activity fee money will be appropriately used and Senate will be doing the most for students. With that said, I’m currently working on a plan

to refund over $100,000 of unused student activity fees back to the students.”

What are your platforms as a Senator?

“Stop the waste, start thinking.

People don’t like to be challenged, and I’m willing to do just that.

During my term, I want to prevent the Senate establishment from Sullivan Jones blowing through student funds simply to follow the same old status quo.

After our battle with COVID-19, Senate’s financial reserves are stacked, so let’s create bold ideas that will truly benefit the students—so long as we do so through constructive thought processes.”

What do you want students to know about Student Senate?

“We are your government, so start knocking on our door and tell us how you feel. The student voice was vital in shutting down the wasteful, abominable fire-pit project. With that said, now is the time for the student voice to mobilize and let us know what we can be doing better in our weekly meetings at 4 p.m. in the Student Center. Also, with elections just around the corner, anyone should consider running for student office to get fresh ideas into our old chambers.”

Are you a part of any other clubs on campus?

“I’m president of the Frontier Liberty Organization and am a member of the soon-to-be CSC Criminal Justice Club— which everyone should join.”

What is your favorite thing to do on your days off?

“College students don’t get whole days off, but in my free time I enjoy fishing, biking, hiking, hunting, or watching the Huskers almost pull out a win.”

As We See It

Your opinion shouldn’t silence others I

love to hear differences in opinions, its how you get the best opinion.

But not everyone thinks like that.

The issue is everybody has an opinion, and no one wants to admit they’re wrong.

Honestly, this isn’t a giant problem if the people who don’t like to hear other arguments don’t try to argue. That’s not often the case. It always seems that people with opinions they aren’t ever willing to change, start the most arguments.

Arguments that are often aggressive and are not convincing to anyone except perhaps themselves.

I love the opinion section, I like to see what people are thinking about or talking about.

There are certain types of opinion articles I think are much harder to read.

I think articles that read like you’re being yelled at really just aren’t worth the read and I’d bet a lot of people agree with me.

No one is trying to feel

assaulted by someone’s opinion piece as they read it.

There are a lot of different ways to write your opinion and most of them are okay.

You can write just to be heard, to convince someone, or to criticize something. None of those things require you to write so the aggression in your argument seeps out of the page.

I’m all for a little bit of snark or sass in an article.

It’s always interesting to see people’s personality in their writing, it’s less interesting when you can just tell that someone seems mean.

Now, how a person writes isn’t necessarily what they are like in person. But a good amount of the time the article and the author are pretty similar.

Opinions easily show who we are because you don’t have to omit your bias or represent both sides. You can pick and choose your sources and the statistics you use.

Bilingual preschool might be hard but it’s worth it  By Anjaelique Cole Columnist

There are many towns that have schools that do half in English and half in another language like Spanish.

My nephew went to one of these preschools and by the time he was six he could speak more Spanish than most of the kids in my high school.

The facts are younger brains understand and comprehend better than older brains. So, it is easier to start teaching a different language at a younger age.

The question is: should we be teaching two languages throughout kindergarten, instead of starting it around middle school?

During middle school, your brain is already hyper loaded with activities, schoolwork and a social life. Trying to learn a new language is hard, but then most colleges require at least two years of a foreign language.

If a child can learn this easier while younger with less stress, why do we not have them do it then.

Learning a foreign language helps with many things like enhancing memory, and the ability to multi-task. It also helps improve brain function and power.

If we start this at a young age, then they can carry that through out all their schooling.

ment. Being bilingual at a job is a step up above other applicants.

When you start learning earlier you also get a better feel for the culture. The problems you and the child may face are that they may not always have fun.

Sometimes they may want to take the easier route and use the language they understand and talk in completely.

It may also put a bit more of a cognitive strain on the language centers of the brain.

Right now, the biggest problems with younger kids learning two languages at once is that it can be expensive.

A school that does part of the day in English and part of the day in another language is more expensive than other schools and if your child is not keeping up there you may hire a tutor, which adds even more costs.

Another one of the problems facing teaching a second language at an early age is children do not find it very useful to learn another

language.

As adults we can see how it effects the brain and their future and see how it may be useful, but all a child sees is that it is taking time out of their day that they could be playing.

The thing is, if you want it to be truly effective the child cannot only hear it at school.

A child’s brain is most suited to learn a second language between the ages of 0-3 and if raised in a bilingual home by 6 months old they can already detect switches in language.

So, if a child is going to be sent to a school that would teach them a foreign language young enough so they can grasp it, then do not let it go to waste, carry it on at home too.

In the first year of my college career, I found myself in a vicious cycle of needing constant academic validation.

My identity as a student was directly tied to my grades, and one “bad grade” would guarantee a bad day. In short, it felt like my world was slowly crumbling in around me because I was so grade focused.

At the very height of my validation fixation, I placed studying and homework above eating and sleeping and had alienated myself from friends and family.

I also lashed out at others and was not the best version of myself during this period. There came a point when I was checking the grade book multiple times a day and I shifted my entire world so

that my grades were the most important priority in my life.

From the outside, I was excelling academically, but I was a disaster waiting to happen on the inside.

Unknowingly, I had created mental roadblocks in my education because I was trying to seek perfection.

Finally, there came the point where I questioned whether I actually understood the material or just knew how to play into the education system. My primary goal during this first year was to complete every assignment, project, and test as close to perfection as possible.

When reflecting on academia and the education system, students place too much pressure upon themselves to do the best and be the best.

Academia should instill a love of learning rather than wreck our esteems and mental health. Ac-

‘The Whale’ is an over-whale-ming performance Review by Kamryn Kozisek Staff Editor “The Whale” follows Charlie, the main character, struggling with weight after losing his boyfriend. He is joined by his best friend, Liz, his daughter, Elle, his ex-wife, Mary and a Mormon missionary, Elder Thomas.

With its eccentric characters and surprising plot twists, this play captures the attention of viewers.

The actors fit each of their roles so well, it is hard to picture them playing anyone else.

Each of the actors seemed to feel the pain of each of their characters.

This play provides a unique perspective as you follow Charlie to his inevitable death, reconnecting with those he once loved.

He receives his ‘death sentence’ from his best friend, who begs him to go to the hospital to save himself, each of the other characters then takes their turn begging him to try to live.

Despite the people who care for him, a best friend who had lost her brother, a daughter who seemingly hates everyone, a missionary who just wants to help one person and an exwife who struggles with alcoholism, Charlie lacks a will to live.

“The Whale” is relatable to college students as it maps the character’s struggles, things that many students struggle with. Charlie struggles with weight, depression and grief, three things that many students can relate to.

Despite all the love in his life, he is ready to die as his struggles overpower his identity.

The surprising part of the story is that the main character is not the only one whose struggles are outlined.

His daughter struggles with academic success and her own mental health, as she watches her mother drink herself away and her father eat himself to death. Even Elder Thomas as a side character has had his struggle with religious validation and identity.

The overall themes of grief, religious struggles and sexuality, are hard topics tackled in a way that shows that everyone struggles.

Despite most the characters being adults, this play screams coming of age story. Each of the characters develop more into their own identities throughout the play.

The irony of the main character’s partner starving himself to Charlie killing himself by overeating makes “The Whale” all the more powerful.

Overall, the power of the characters and actors, is not to be missed. The story describes the struggle with mental health that many people struggle with today and shows that selfharm and suicide can come in many forms.

No one is safe from the misery that can be felt radiating off of the characters in “The Whale”. This play will keep you on your toes and take over your thoughts once it’s over. The more you think about it, the more underlying details that are discovered.

The entire story is a maze of hidden details that change the meaning of scenes, characters and phrases. Even the title “The Whale” in reality is not about the weight problem of the main character but instead is a reference to his obsession with a book report on Moby Dick his daughter had written. Every line seems to have an underlying meaning or is pointing you to a later plot twist.

If you missed it, “The Whale” returns to the Black Box Theatre, Dec. 3-4 and if you have seen it, see it again.

Ag USDA provides $75 million ARP u By Kamryn Kozisek Ag and Range Editor

USDA Secretary, Tom Vilsack announced the USDA’s plan to provide $75 million to the American Rescue Plan section 1006.

The plan will help fund technical assistance for historically underserved population to connect to USDA programs.

Funding was provided to 20 organizations that have helped underserved communities including veterans, new farmers, producers with limited resource and those living in high poverty areas.

“As we build back better than we were before, USDA is listening to our customers, and we are proud to offer new tools to help address inequities for underserved farmers and ranchers through the American Rescue Plan,” said Vilsack in a USDA press release. “We are committed to making each of our programs equitable so all can benefit from the opportunities USDA investments and programs help create. Our planned work with these important cooperators will help USDA achieve these important goals.”

Berggren plan draft released u By Kamryn Kozisek Ag and Range Editor

A draft of the 2021 Berggren Plan for pheasant management had been released for public comment by the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission.

The plan is based on improving pheasant hunting in Nebraska over the next five years.

The draft outlines the goals of the plan as, increasing pheasant abundance, increasing hinter access to land, increase the amount of pheasant hunters and manage hunter expectations.

The original Berggren Plan or Berggren 1.0 was used from 20162020 and included 2,434 projects with private landowners with improving pheasant habitat in prior-

ity areas. The new plan includes efforts to incentivize Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) land when improving pheasant habitat.

The plan splits the state into six habitat priority areas, part of Dawes County falls into Northern Panhandle Pheasant Opportunity Area (NPPOA). Other priority areas include Southwest, South-Central, Southern Panhandle, Central and Northeast. The Southeast and Central Platte priority areas that were including the original Berggren plan were removed.

Goals for NPPOA include 1,000 acres of new CRP land, 12,586 acres of re-enrolled CRP, 2,325.7 acres of mid-contract CRP land and 4,232.2 acres of grass establishment on pivot acres, over the next five years.

The plan also outlines the NP-

POA having a goal of 35% of CRP acres having public access for pheasant hunting.

Other changes include goals to improve the number of minority group hunters, re-evaluating how cost-effective pheasant releases are and how they affect the number of new hunters.

The development of an “Upland Gamebird Science Literacy” website to help communicate science and research that applies to upland game bird management.

A virtual meet is being held at 7 p.m. Central Time Dec. 8. Registration for the meeting is available on the Game and Parks Commission website.

Chadron State men’s wrestling team saw four placements against strong competition, Saturday at the Cowboy Open in Laramie, Wyoming.

“We all wrestled tough, everyone showed a lot of effort against such tough competition,” Ethan Leake, redshirt sophomore of Clovis, California, said. “We still got things to work on, but it was good for everyone to get out there and

At 197 pounds, Eli Hinojosa, redshirt junior of Imperial, was the second wrestler to finish with a fourth place going 2-2 for the day. Hinojosa took a decision win over his first opponent, 8-3. His following two matches ended with major decisions with Hinojosa losing one, 16-4, and winning the next, 14-3. To finish out his day, he was beat out of third place by Jack Forbes of Utah Valley University, freshman of Littleton, Colorado, by one point for a decision, 5-4.

Jennings was the leading scorer for the Eagles during their second Puerto Rico game with 21 points and six rebounds. He went 10 for 10 from the free throw line. He also finished the third game second in points for the Eagles with 18.

Delimont finished the weekend of Puerto Rico in the lead with 19 points against the University of Sacred Hearts. He led in field goals, being five of 12, and in three-point shots being five of 11. He also made four of his five free throws.

Leake started his day off strong with wins over his first two opponents in the 141-pound weight class. He pinned his first opponent at 4:30 before taking a decision win over University of Wyoming’s Aidan Noonan, freshman of Bernard, Iowa, 7-2.

He continued to his third match, being pinned at 2:33 by his opponent. Leake faced No. 24 Chase Zollmann, redshirt senior of Poway, California, from University of Wyoming, and Leake finished the day fourth after a decision loss 6-5.

“I think that I wrestled pretty good,” Leake said. “I still have a lot to work on by the end of the season, but it was good to get out there against tough competition and see where we are at, especially this early in the season.”

Competing unattached in 141 weight class, Hunter Gilmore, freshman of Arlington, was another Eagle place winner. He pinned in his first and third matches, 4:24 and 4:07.

In his second match, he took a technical

fall loss, 17-1 at five minutes before also facing Zollman in his final match and taking a major decision loss, 15-2 and finishing the meet in fifth.

To finish out the placers for CSC, Rowdy Pfeil, sophomore of Moorcroft, Wyoming, started the meet with a decision win, 6-2, before going up against No. 5 Tyce Raddon, sophomore of Beaver, Utah, of Western Wyoming.

Against Raddon, Pfeil ended the match with a major decision loss, 14-6. He finished out his day in fifth place after being pinned by his last two opponents at 2:39 and 4:14.

The men’s wrestling team have this weekend off before they return to the mats for Chadron State Duals, Saturday, Dec. 11, against the University of Nebraska-Kearney, Augustana University, and San Francisco State University.

Leake said the team will continue to push and keep getting better over the break, using the time to continue to improve and work hard.

Indoor track and field team is ready for the blanks to fire, signaling the start of its season.

“I’m excited to see how our marks and times improve this year from last year,” Shane Collins, sophomore of Bison, South Dakota, said.

He said that the unknowns that last year held made thinks hard on athletes to perform at their best and this year’s stability will bring accomplishments above their current expectations.

The men’s indoor track and field team have welcomed back over thirty athletes like Naishaun Jernigan, junior of Springfield, Massachusetts, who placed eighth with a leap of 23 feet, 10.25 inches in the long jump during last season’s NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships and earned All American honors.

The team will also see sprinter and jumper Morgan Fawver, junior of McCook, back on the track along with the members of last year’s 4x400 relay team: Osvaldo Cano, junior of Oshkosh; Osiel Cano, junior of Oshkosh; Harley Rhoads, senior of Douglas, Wyoming; and Gregory Logsdon, sophomore of Torrington, Wyoming.

A number of placing jumpers returned as well as throwers like Collins and Jordyn Spencer, junior of Loveland, Colorado.

There will be 20 new men’s track athletes building a roster that currently consists of 54 athletes.

“It has been great having new ath-

letes on the team,” Collins said. “It always brings a little extra competition into the mix.”

Chadron State women’s track team is filled with 30 athletes, 18 of the athletes returning from last year.

Miranda Gilkey, senior of Lusk, Wyoming, and Destiny Pelton, sophomore of Fort Morgan, Colorado, are some jumpers leaping back into the season for jumps along with multis like Julieanne Thomsen, redshirt junior of Custer, South Dakota, and Johannah Christie, sophomore of Alpine, Wyoming.

Throwers Morgan Ekwall, Becca Monahan, and Courtney Smith have been back in the ring, all of the throwers working with a new coach.

Collins said that the new coach has been great to work with so far.

“There is always an adjustment period when a new coach comes in but I think that what Coach Lizzie brings to the program will be beneficial to the program as we continue through the season.”

Last year the indoor season consisted of seven meets, four of them being hosted by Black Hills State University.

This year, the season will begin at BHSU for the Yellow Jacket Holiday Open, Friday and Saturday before the Eagles make trips to Golden, Colorado, and Brookings, South Dakota.

Collins said he hopes to improve this season by passing some mental barriers that keeps him from accomplishing things.

“For this weekend, I’m hoping to see myself and my teammates hit some solid marks and times and really set this season off in the right direction,” he said.

CSC men’s basketball team was able to travel to the island of enchantment and play three games against island teams.

While in Puerto Rico, the Eagles CSC took three wins by ten points or more even with a portion of their players out for injuries, evening out their overall record 4-4 with different Eagles on the leader board game to game.

“Everyone gave us valuable minutes throughout the weekend at some point in those three games,” Shane Paben, head men’s basketball coach, said. “Those guys really stepped up when we were in foul trouble, injuries, guys getting thrown into different positions and stuff. I’m just proud of the entire group.”

For the first game, Teddy Parham, junior of Los Angeles, led the Eagles with 15 points against the University of Puerto Rico-Carolina on Friday.

The Eagles took a quick lead over the Jaguars to finish the first half, 43-24. Chadron State continued to drive for points taking a 24-point win, 81-57.

Parham contributed five of eight field goals, three of five three pointers, and made both of his free throw attempts. He also led the team with nine rebounds, finishing the game just shy of a double-double.

The second game against the University of Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras remained a little closer, the biggest lead for the Eagles being

23 points with about 13 minutes left of the second half.

“Playing three straight days is always tough,” Paben said. “It’s not an easy thing to do and do we have enough energy. They were not bad teams down there. We had to go out there and compete, hit some shots.”

CJ Jennings, senior of Colorado Springs, Colorado, led the second game against the University of Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras with 21 points. He was 100% from the free throw line, gaining 10 of his points off of the Roosters’ fouls.

Jennings was four of 12 for field goals and three of seven for three-pointers. Similar to Parham during Friday’s game, Jennings also led the Eagles with six rebounds on Saturday.

During Sunday’s game, Brady Delimont, senior of Ainsworth, and Jennings, battled against University of Sacred Heart’s Rychell Janga on the arc which tied the score eight times and the lead changed 12 times.

Delimont led the Eagles with 19 points, making five from within the arc and at the arc. He also made four of five free throws.

“It was a great weekend for our team,” Delimont said. “I wouldn’t have been the leading scorer without the help of my teammates. It was great to achieve that but winning was even better. We took a big step as a team this weekend.”

Jennings was right behind with 18 points: four field goals, four three-pointers and being six of eight for free throws.

The Eagles eventually broke away from the dolphins with a three pointer from KJ Harris, junior of McKinney, Texas, with 8:50

left in the second half.

For the last six minutes of the game, Jennings made four free throws while Delimont made two of his three-pointers to extend the Eagles’ lead to 10 points before the buzzer sounded to signal CSC’s full sweep in Puerto Rico.

“Whenever you get an opportunity to get in the game, you have to make the most of it,” Delimont said. “Everyone did that and that is showed going 3-0.”

Harris and Marcus Jefferson, junior of Lewisville, Texas, played through all three games consistently.

Harris scored 10 points Friday, 14 points Saturday and seven points Sunday. Over the weekend, he scored 12 of 21 field goals and five of 11 three-pointers. He had a strong presence with rebounds with six on both Friday and Sunday and two Saturday.

Jefferson finished the weekend with a total of 34 points. He had 11 makes within the arc, seven three-pointers, and five free throws.

Still facing a number of injuries, the Eagles return to play in Chicoine against Fort Lewis College on Friday and Western Colorado University on Saturday. They will play after the women’s basketball team plays at 5:30 p.m., both days.

“We’re adjusting on the fly. It kind of feels like COVID almost like every day is like I don’t know what’s going to happen,” Paben said. “So, if we weather the storm and come together, this group could really be special in January and February. Not the season I envisioned but we’re still battling.”
