Meet your Student Senators Senator at Large Makenna Metzler wants to get good use of their student activity fees Makenna Metzler, 21, junior of Otis, Colorado What Student Senate committees are you a part of?

“Bylaw Revision, Academic Strategic Planning, Parking Appeals and AFB.” Do you have any previous experience in the Student Senate? If so, what was it?

“No, I do not have any previous experience as a Student Senate.”

Why did you decide to become a Senator?

“I decided to become a senator so changes on campus would align with what the students wanted and that all students’ opinions were being shared in the senate.”

What would you like to accomplish during your term?

“I would like to make sure students are getting good use out of their activity fee and that their activity fee benefits them directly. If students are not getting use out of their Makenna Metzler activity fee what is the point of even having an activity fee.”

What are your platforms as a Senator?

“Honesty – I want to make sure that the student money is being handled properly and that students

know what is going on in the senate.”

What do you want students to know about the Student Senate?

“I want them to know that we are a resource for students to get their voices heard and we can help them make the changes they want to see on campus.”

Are you a part of any other clubs on campus?

“I am a part of the Frontier Liberty Organization.”

What is your favorite thing to do on your days off?

“I enjoy hiking, reading, watching my favorite Netflix shows, and spending time with friends and family.”

Student Senate contemplates future of the Food Pantry  By Aubrie Lawrence Editor-in-Chief

After Chief Justice Nathan Cronin asked for an additional $5,000 allocation for the Food Pantry, Student Senate discussed the future of the program.

Cronin said the Food Pantry requested the allocation to cover the costs of food needed due to an unexpected rise in students going to the food pantry.

“It’s kind of expanding a lot larger than we expected, which is a good thing,” Cronin said.

“The November food pantry minimum served is 215 and we’re guessing it’s closer to 250.”

The money would also be used to expand the pantry to non-food items like feminine hygiene products and toiletries. Without the allocation, Cronin said that the food pantry would only be able to provide goods to students through March.

Sullivan Jones, senator of liberal arts, asked, with the rising number of students, if there needed to be more data collected on students to ensure that the additional funds were being used appropriately.

“I guess I’m concerned that we’re using large amounts of funds to supplement the diet of students that might not necessarily need it,” Jones said. “I would like to see some numbers on who’s really getting food from the food pantry before we add this money. It’s not like this money is needed immediately. You certainly don’t want to ask students who are showing up ‘what’s your economic status,’ but I would like to see a way to ensure that this isn’t being taken advantage of.”

Natalie Boyd, senator-at-large, voiced her concerns that collecting data could create a stigma about collecting food.

“I think we should approach the subject with a little more humanity and maintain a sensibility about this,” Boyd said. “Because if you are a Chadron State College student, we take pride that you should be able to complete your classes, get the grades that you know you can earn and still put food on the table. I would rather have 10 students who don’t need it getting it than 50-100 students who do need it not getting it.”

Student Senate allocated the full amount with a vote of 15-2.

Don’t let finals stress paralyze you D uring this time of year, the only thing I have on my mind is finals week.

I think I can safely say that life can get pretty tough for students around the end of the semester.

Simply put, students are stressed as hell and anxiety can approach a new high.

I have no shame in admitting that I have to dig a little deeper to finish the semester out strong and unfortunately my mental health can take the back burner.

Finals week can be exhausting, overwhelming and stressful.

After sixteen weeks of classes, I lose all motivation to take tests, write papers, complete projects and give presentations. My stress levels also reach a new high as I juggle work, extracurriculars and meetings.

When thinking of finals week, I associate the time period with heightened frustration because so many students push themselves past their limits to attain the best grades possible.

I know I am guilty of cramming for exams at the last minute and typing until my fingers start cramping.

Stress can be a good thing in certain situations as it helps me to perform at the highest level possible but in excess it starts

to inhibit my ability to succeed.

As homework and studying starts to pile up, I realize how much unnecessary stress I build up in the last couple weeks of the semester.

While easier said than done, I try to maintain some perspective in that a bad grade does not equal the end of the world.

When faced with the chalOlivia Bryant lenges of finals week, I can go through a range of emotions. By observing my emotions, and not judging them, I create a safe space which tells me that I will be OK, no matter what emotions I am experiencing.

Why does finals week have to be so stressful?

Who decided it would be a good idea to have a week of important assignments, tests, projects and presentations all due around the same time?

I am not a big proponent of finals week and think that finals are not an accurate way to properly assess a student’s knowledge.

I think that finals week can also place unneeded stress on teachers to make sure that their students perform at a high level.

Teachers also have to worry about creating finals and the grading of finals under the time constraints of grade finalizing. I do not feel that the finals week system benefits anyone.

While there is no way to completely eliminate finals week and my stress, I do have a few ways I create calm in a sea of chaos.

First, I like to make sure that my day is being used effectively through time management techniques.

Second, I reach out to my support networks of family and friends when my stress levels climb.

Third, I make time for self-care and relaxation.

Finally, I stick to my established sleep schedule because I know I need a full eight hours to function effectively.

Through establishing boundaries and creating calmness, I can reclaim some normalcy during a week of high stress.

To sum it up, finals week can be taxing and hard to handle. We are all doing our best and that is what matters. I hope that everyone has a successful finals week.

Chadron State women’s basketball team finished out its weekend with a fourth quarter comeback, winning its first two conference games on Friday against Fort Lewis College, 72-49, and Saturday against Western Colorado University, 60-51.

“I was happy to see everyone having fun, the bench, coach, we all just wanted to win,” Samiyah Worrell, junior of Fountain, Colorado, said.

The Eagles started right out of the gate Saturday night, leading 12-4 by the end of the first quarter before the Mountaineers were able to return to tie the score at 24 by the end of the first half.

CSC women’s basketball team remained behind throughout the second half until two three pointers from Worrell brought the Eagles to a two-point lead with two and half minutes left of the game causing Chicoine to erupt with energy.

“I really enjoyed the atmosphere,” Worrell said. “I haven’t played in two games that loud since high school. Everyone who came to support truly made a difference.”

The lead was extended with the last points of the game being free throws from Jori Peters, senior of Mitchell, and Ashayla Powers, freshman of Longmont, Colorado.

The Eagles saw the same three leaders for both games Friday and Saturday.

Powers led Friday’s game with 24 points against Fort Lewis, being seven of nine for field goals and 10 of 11 for free throws. She finished Saturday with 11 points, being the second highest scorer for the night.

Worrell ended second for the Eagles Friday with 12 points against the Skyhawks then traded spots with Powers to take the scoring leader against the Mountaineers. She had 20 points Saturday, being six of 13 from the field, five of eight for three pointers and was 100% from the free throw line with three.

Worrell said that everyone had contributed to both of the wins over the weekend.

“I feel like my team and I regained our confidence and realized how good we can be this past weekend,” she said. “Hopefully, we can build on that going into practice this week.”

Worrell and Powers led Saturday with the most rebounds, both having six for the night.

Peters finished both games as the third highest scorer with nine points on Friday and eight points on Saturday. Against Western Colorado University, Peters made two shots from the two-point range, three-point range and free-throw range each.

Worrell said leading up to their next game the team will be trying to carry over their momentum from the weekend wins.

The women’s basketball team travels for its next games which start at 5 p.m., Friday against Westminster College in Salt Lake City, Utah, and at 5:30 p.m., Saturday against Colorado Mesa University in Grand Junction, Colorado.

CSC track team buzzes to first

Chadron State indoor track and field team finished its first meet of the season with 12 first place finishes and two NCAA qualifying marks at the Yellow Jacket Holiday Open Meet, Friday and Saturday in Spearfish, South Dakota.

Creighton Trembly, sophomore of Longmont, Colorado, and Dan Reynolds, sophomore of Granby, Colorado, were the two athletes to make NCAA qualifying marks with their first-place finishes. Trembly finished the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.21 seconds and Reynolds threw 60 feet, 4.5 inches in the 35-pound weight throw.

“I was a bit surprised when I found out I hit the NCAA qualifying mark,” Trembly said. “I knew that I was close to it, but I did not expect to do it so soon.”

Reynolds also took first in the shot put with a throw of 52 feet, 7.5 inches.

Close behind Reynolds was Shane Collins, junior of Bison, South Dakota, who took second in the same events as Reynolds. Collins threw 50 feet, 0.5 inches in the shot put and 54 feet, 1 inch in the 35-pound weight throw.

Osvaldo Cano, junior of Oshkosh, crossed the finish line first in the 400 meter race at 50.71 seconds. Behind him was Greg Logsdon, sophomore of Torrington, Wyoming, at 50.92 seconds.

Logsdon and Cano along with his twin brother Osiel Cano, junior of Oshkosh, and Harley Rhoades, senior of Douglas, Wyoming, took first in the 4x400 relay race with a time of 3:25.43.

In the jumps, Joss Linse, senior of Plattsmouth,

marked 44 feet, 9 inches to take first in the triple jump and he finished third in the long jump at 20 feet, 9 inches.

Emory Yoosook, sophomore of Casper, Wyoming, leaped into first place in the long jump with a mark of 22 feet, 3.5 inches. Yoosook also finished fourth in the 60 meter dash at 7.13 seconds and second in the 200 meter race at 23.31 seconds.

Joe Dumsa, senior of Sandy, Utah, was another first place finish for the Eagles in the high jump at 6 feet 6.25 inches.

“The whole team did very well for the first meet and got a lot of good marks,” Trembly said. “We should be able to do some great things this season with that kind of start.”

For the women’s team, Caydince Groth, freshman of Cheyenne, Wyoming, finished first in the 400 meters at 1:01.79 with Carlie Collier, junior of Dunning, finishing the race second at 1:02.44.

Groth, Collier, Hannah Christie, sophomore of Alpine, Wyoming, and Danae Rader, freshman of Hansen, made up the 4x400 relay team that finished first with a time of 4:15.86.

Rader also took second in the 60 meter hurdles timed for 9.64 seconds, and Christie took second in the Pentathlon with 2,995 points.

Julianne Thomsen, senior of Custer, South Dakota, was the athlete to finish first in the pentathlon with 3,076 points.

Jourdaine Cerenil, sophomore of Pine Bluffs, Wyoming, jumped for gold in the high jump, reaching five feet, five inches and she took second in the long jump at 16 feet, 4.5 inches.

Miranda Gilkey, senior of Lusk, Wyoming, finished second in the high jump at 5 feet, 3.75 inches.

The Eagles continues their indoor track meet with the Concordia Early Bird meet Friday and Saturday at Seward.

Jennings was five of five from the free-throw line, making Saturday his third game being 100% from the line. He was also three of four from the arc.

Jennings tied up the score at 50 points for Chadron State against the Mountaineers from the free throw line after making a layup at 14:45 in the second half. He also pushed the biggest lead of 10 points for the Eagles following another layup with seven minutes left of the game.

Teddy Parham, junior of Los Angeles, and KJ Harris, junior of McKinney, Texas, were also 100% for free throws with two points from Parham and seven points from Harris.

Parham finished the game with 17 points and Harris had 13.

Marcus Jefferson, junior of Lewisville, Texas, was the second leader for the Eagles being a point away from 20 Saturday with five field goals, eight free throws and a three pointer. Jefferson led the Eagles with points Friday night against Fort Lewis University with 13 points.

“We bounced back the way that we should and got back in the win column,” Jennings said. “I like that we fought and battled through all the adversity we have faced.”

In their first half of Friday’s game, the Eagles went 32.14% from the field goal range and 12.5% at the arc. The shots slowly started sinking as the weekend progressed, going 57.14% for field goals and 40% for three pointers during the first half of Saturday’s game.

The men’s basketball team plays following the women’s basketball team at 7 p.m., Friday, against Westminster College in Salt Lake City, Utah, and at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, against Colorado Mesa University in Grand Junction.
